In my opinion, Interior architecture combines the rigorousness and functionality of architecture with artistic and ergonomic elements. Rhythm, order, proportion, concept and structure are some of the elements that generate an architectural response. However, if we mix them with other resources such as lighting, furniture, textures, colors and materials which can be, depending on the implementation, the factors to transform an empty space into something habitable.

It is my concern to design up to the smallest details, playing with elements and concepts that ends into the space’s metamorphosis always considering the individuals that will be experiencing the interior environment. I want to make a difference in people’s lives and experiences. My goal is to create welcoming and lasting spaces that at the same time provoke a reaction, involving imagination and senses; making people feel related to the space they are in.

SHANDS

FLORIDA UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL // DENTAL DEPARTMENT

Health Care Project - December 2015

The Shands Dental Healthcare facility is the result of teamwork that included extensive research in order to respond to the spatial program and create an innovative design. Afterwards, the guidance statement allowed us to develop guidelines for our decision making process. This “design guidance statement” was interpreted in the space by placing art as focal points in the end of the corridors, also by creating interactive walls that will allow each patient to educate and to interact with the doctor and other patients. The floor plan was organized in a open, rhythmical and clean manner. The operatories design allowed all the spaces to have natural sunlight. The variety of seating arrangements socio-petal and socio-fugal allowed choices for the users, and the use of louvers and blind glass for the operatories enable the control of privacy. The color palette enhanced the way finding and created a more vivid and interesting space. The materiality was inspired in nature to promote the user’s well-being.

The result of this studio was a very clean, functional, and innovative design. The spaces accomplished were: 48 operatories for 6 different specialties, 6 laboratories, 12 offices for doctors and specialists, private waiting areas, large reception area, kids/learning area, administration and support offices, 2 large conferences rooms with a capacity of 20 people each, and a private waiting/break room for the education department.

BRICKELL KEY // ASIA BUILDING

High End Residential Project - May 2015

This project is a three level penthouse in the Asia Building located in Brickell Key - Miami, selected as the FIU Studio 4 project. Luxury was interpreted as the customization of every piece, the best materials and furniture selection, and the ultimate construction/manufacture techniques in all the design proposals. The target in this High-end project is an affluent client, world traveled, with a big interest in how the space he will live in should look like. The final goal was to accomplish all the client’s needs by using the luxury principles. The clients BREATHE, SPEAK and LIVE in the Fashion Industry. Thus, it was very logical to consider fashion as the leading aesthetic guide to the whole project. The idea was to bring an Stylish language to the apartment’s look and feel, in a way that the clients’ needs could be solved by the interpretation of different brands and designers related to each space/client.

Fashion is the glue element among the clients, therefore, four different and most known brands where selected to translate each area vibe as they relate to the clients/space’s taste and needs. GIVENCHY is represented in the lower level with a color palette White/Black/Gold; it defines the social and more public areas, reveling the exquisite and delicate client’s avocation. Two important and different activities are conceived in the second floor, allowing working with two other brands: first, RALPH LAUREN that linked just right with the nautical concept for the terraces. Second, CHANEL: the iconic designer from Paris, which is the client’s favorite city. PRADA was the perfect brand to incorporate into the Master Bedroom, the richness of their color palette and the introduction of wood, allowed a sophisticated and elegant treatment for the most important and private room of the apartment.

CINCO. Wines & Cigars

CORAL GABLES

Retail Project - December 2014

CORAL GABLES is a Miami residential and commercial area known for being exclusive, with a huge Latin influence in architecture. It was selected to locate a 10.000 Sq Ft. Wine Retail Store, originally called “A Bodega”. The project has a wide program to cover the necessity of having a space for wine and cigars lovers, and at the same time positioning an important wine retail store that currently is absent in that area. CINCO has an impressive and elegant neighbor: The Villages of Merrick Park. From the beginning it was clear that the project would be for a “high-end” public. The Merrick Park visitors can come by and make the new store their regular place. It is focused on cosmopolitan young spirit people that want to have fun and taste high quality products, as well as interested in having unique experiences. The principal inspiration was the “Bodega” : It is the place where the liquor makers store their products until they are appropriate to sell; it is an intimate, warm, and dark place. This translates in the selection of materials. First, the wood: chosen in different shades and textures to accomplish rustics and warm finishes. Second, the stone: it remind us the dark and cold of a bodega. And third, the glass: it works as a container were the liquors are served.

THE BUILDING has two stories. The first floor, is a public space focused exclusively on retail. Wine, hard liquors, cheese and accessories can be bought on this level. It also has a gourmet area were delicacies of the world can be found. The liquor buying experience is more private, because they are located at the end of the store. The glass display “containers” becomes the space dividers and separate less private spaces to more private. On the first floor, the containers are cooled cellars, where the clients can select temperate wines. The second floor, is a more private social area, it has a lounge that acts as a distributor of the different spaces. Guesses can watch and interact with a cigar maker. There is an open terrace for tobacco smokers with a view to The Merrick Park. Three private rooms can become one depending on the visitor’s needs. At the end of the space there is a private “Cata Bar”, a wine tasting salon with the most prestigious view of the entire store. COLOR is very important in Latin culture. The relationship among the spaces is through color and texture use. It was decided to study the techniques and principles of two Venezuelan kinetic artists, to accomplish the notorious elements of the store. The first, is an orange custom made chandelier located in the central space inspired by the artist JESUS SOTO that connects the two levels visually. Second, was a creation of a vertical system “The skin” inspired on the works of the renowned artist CARLOS CRUZ-DIEZ. Third, to enhance the “VIP” areas, three important pieces were placed from both artists at the end of each private room, they bring the color and quality factor.

BRICKELL 1001 OFFICES BRICKELL, MIAMI - FL.

Office Space Project - December 2015

An investment office of 4,500 sqft was the area to be transformed by the FIU by Design team. The professor, Katie Rothfield (faculty member of FIU’s Interior Architecture Department) was the lead designer, and I served as Graduate Assistant with the responsibility of developing the project as detailed as necessary for the construction documents. Since my participation was from day one, I was involved in every step of the process. The Mangrove was the inspiration for the concept statement in relation to what the company is about, and their location. The roots are a metaphor for establishment, seriousness, and confidentiality. It is a reinterpretation on how this company treats their clients’ money, how they want to see themselves in the clients’ lives, and how they want to be perceived as a company. We acknowledge the beautiful ocean views that this office have, by placing using clear glass in the majority of the partitions proposed, this also helped with the natural light entrance to most of the interior spaces. To enhance privacy we selected a writable frosted band, that could be used from one side of the glass.

A total of 40 employees were located among the three main departments. The open space was complemented with three meeting rooms of different capacities, depending on the users’ needs. A private office area, allowing a more calm work area was formed by an executive office and two quiet rooms. A larger kitchen/cafe was proposed to allocate at least 8 employees, which is the double of their current conditions. During the process, I was involved in meeting with clients, programming, concept development, space planning, materials and finishes selection, furniture selection, meeting with sales reps, 3D design, rendering, detail development, and construction documents creation.

ROMAGNA MIA

CARACAS - VENEZUELA

Commercial Project - January 2014

A trattoria is an Italian-style eating establishment, less formal than a restaurant, but more formal than a fast food local. The design challenge was to create a place that could function as both a trattoria and a retail space, selling different type of house made pasta and related products. In a 700 SqFt. local the two activities were impossible to accomplish within the interior, therefore, the trattoria look and feel was implemented, but the “main restaurant“ was leaved in the outdoor terrace, where tables were placed, giving enough space inside for itinerant customers.

ROMAGNA, which is the name of the local, was the inspiration for the project; it is a little Italian village that still has the classic European architecture on its rustics and old facades. During the design process, the project presented structural and mechanical challenges that were solved in collaboration with field specialists. Since the retail space was located in a new mall, the design solutions were presented and approved by the fire department and the city regulator.

TERRACE

CARACAS - VENEZUELA

Residential Project - August 2013

This beautiful view is from a penthouse's terrace in Caracas, Venezuela. The semi/outdoor area of 400 Sq.Ft, was the space where a barbecue and dining areas had to be allocated. A black and white picture of "The Avila" which is an impressive mountain that makes a statement along the city landscape, was used as inspiration for this project. Grayscale was selected as the color palette, brown color was employed for the flooring material, to give warmth to the cold tones used in the rest of the proposal. Wooden deck panels especially made for outdoors were placed to cover the original floor. It was decided to paint in white the brick wall, to work as a textured skin that surrounds at least half of the terrace.

Lights were positioned along the edge of the deck, to create a lighting path and pattern that reflects on the wall. Stainless steel was selected for the cabinet’s doors, and also for all the elements that compose the barbecue's kitchen. The main character of the terrace is a collection of black furniture with well-defined design lines. The dining table and chairs were from the VERTEX collection of VONDOM, designed by Karim Rashid, and the center tables are KARTELL T-tables, perfect for outdoors and wet areas.
