Design Skills Symposium Scotland 2011 The Tolbooth, Stirling. 27-29 September

“If we want to create better places in Scotland more often than we have in the past, policymakers and those charged with delivery need to engage with both making markets and placeshaping strategies – especially by rethinking public sector commitment to and investment in placequality” Delivering Better Places in Scotland The symposium offers an intensive 2.5 day ‘hands on’ learning programme with the objective of developing practical skills in designing and delivering better streets and neighbourhoods in Scotland. The city of Stirling will form the basis for study, beginning with a city walk and site visits followed by a series of workshops. Keynote and high-profile speakers will provide the bigger picture and insight from projects throughout the UK and beyond. The theme of this year’s Symposium is based on the findings of “Delivering Better Places in Scotland” which is a good practice guide to placemaking produced in 2010. Building on the findings, the brief will include a consideration of how to integrate ‘people aspects of place, from learning, housing, jobs, culture, sustainability and health with the ‘spatial aspects’ of place, street networks, blocks, and buildings.’ Three contexts will be used to guide the action learning: urban expansion, re-thinking strategic transport infrastructure and the historic environment. Stirling, with its dramatic landscape, history, and rich diversity of settings provides the perfect location to explore placemaking in these contexts.

Day 1: Familiarisation & refining of the brief

Day 3: Delivery by design

The purpose of the first day is to engage with both the city and the areas that will form the basis for study in order to refine the brief. Delegates will be issued with an outline brief in advance. Following a short presentation, delegates will break into groups, and quickly review the briefing material.

The final day will draw together all of the lessons learnt from the previous days, and develop a design framework for delivering the final proposal.

This will be followed by guided site visits to understand the place contexts, historic setting sand community challenges. Delegates will use the information gathered to refine the scope of the project brief, and sketch an outline urban appraisal. This material will act as a framework to guide work over the following days.

In the final workshop the A&DS Design Review process will be introduced and the proposal will be presented graphically to a Design Review panel composed of expert practitioners and members of A+DS Design Review Team.

Day 2: Initial concept development Day 2 focuses on developing propositons that will address the brief. This will be informed by an international masterclass based on projects delivered, and outcomes achieved. This will be followed by a set of thematic seminars to inform thinking on the development of the brief. Multi-disciplary workshop sessions following the seminars will engage delegates in delivering outcomes, design thinking and working with assets to achieve a series of values in the particular place context. In the afternoon the outline propositions will be tested by a panel of experts, including developers, policymakers, service providers and community members.
