Travellers Diarrhoea

Make sure you’re well prepared for summer, with safe play in the sun. There are common myths about sun protection. Let’s clear this up once and for all!

Here are some of the holiday essential items that you shouldn’t go without!

Travellers’ diarrhoea can occur due to exposure to contaminants in our food and water.

l Dressings of different shapes and sizes including some waterproof options l Insect repellent- pharmacy strength formula may be required for some locations l Sunscreen SPF 30-50+ for the whole family l Hand sanitiser and antibacterial wipes for healthy hands l Blister pads l Antiseptic cream l Insect bite cream l Tweezers

l Sun damage can still occur on cloudy, windy or cool days. And there’s no such thing as a ‘windburn’!

Here are our pharmacist’s top tips for dealing with traveller’s diarrhoea on your holiday this year.

l You still need to put sunscreen underneath your regular skin care or cosmetics with SPF, especially if you will be out in the sun for a while.

l Prevention is key, see your pharmacist for advice on pre-biotics and pro-biotics that can assist in protecting your gut from nasty bugs. l The first choice for holiday goers experiencing diarrhoea is oral re-hydration solution. Ask your pharmacist about dosing to prevent dehydration.

Ask your pharmacist about these medication essentials: l Antihistamines to treat allergies l Pain relief for the whole family l Motion sickness treatments l Oral rehydration solution

l Ask your pharmacist about medicines that can reduce the frequency of bowel movements l If symptoms are severe and/or last for longer than 2 days for adults- seek medical care. l See your GP before you travel to talk about prescription medication options prior to your holiday.

l If you are naturally tanned or have olive skin, you can still get sun damage so make sure you get some sun protection. l Generally, you don’t need long exposure to the sun to get enough Vitamin D. Most people will get enough Vitamin D from just doing everyday tasks, in and out of the house. So, what’s so bad about the sun? Well, it’s the Ultraviolet (UV) radiation that is the invisible killer and increases your risk of developing skin cancer. This summer, make sure you slip, slop, slap, seek, slide! And download the SunSmart app to keep track of the UV index. Ask your Advantage pharmacist for more advice on being SunSmart and having fun in the sun this summer!
