Pain Management Pain Australia estimates that 1 in 5 Australians are living with chronic pain overall, and this is certainly more prevalent as you get older. Early stages of pain management are particularly important, to ensure that it does not develop into chronic pain. Some risk factors of chronic pain include: • Inadequate pain relief • Inadequate understanding of the cause of pain • Fear and anxiety around pain • Inappropriate treatments • Other health conditions that contribute to pain On the other hand, excessive use of some strong pain relievers for long-term may result in hyperalgesia. This phenomenon occurs when the body starts to experience disproportionately greater sensation of pain even when minimally aggravated. Pharmacists play a part in optimising pain management and liaising with other healthcare professionals on an individual case basis.

What is Pain? Pain can be described as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage. Pain can also be classified as ‘acute pain’ or ‘chronic pain’.
Acute pain occurs when there is tissue injury to parts of the body, which results in a relay of signals to the brain thus resulting in pain being experienced. If left untreated, it may develop into chronic pain. Pain is considered chronic when it has persisted daily for three months. Chronic pain may occur when there is ongoing tissue injury, or ongoing dysfunction or damage to parts of your nerve. This results in continuous pain signals being sent to the brain, thus causing long-term pain being experienced. Everyone describes pain intensity quite differently. This is because there are psychological and emotional factors that play a part in the perception of pain. Pharmacists can provide advice and support to assist with pain management, in addition to a whole team approach with other healthcare professionals.
Feel free to have a discussion with your Advantage pharmacist about how they can help you better manage your pain!

Dental Care Dental pain or a ‘toothache’ may present in several ways, none of which is pleasant. The type and nature of the pain you are experiencing is usually an indicator of what may be the underlying cause. There are many different causes of dental pain such as decay, a fracture of a tooth or gum disease. As we get older, there are also more risk factors that may contribute to dental pain.

Here is a brief list of self-care tips to help you prevent the occurrence of long-term dental problems:
20%F
• Limit intake of sugar-rich or acidic foods and drinks • Brush your teeth with a fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day. If experiencing sensitivities, use a suitable toothpaste specifically designed for sensitive teeth.
OF
• Floss between your teeth regularly. • Use a plaque reducing mouth wash. • Tackle dry mouth issues, by using appropriate oral rinses, sprays or gels. Although a visit to the dentist may not be high up on your list of ‘most fun things to do’, seeing your dentist on a regular basis, once or twice a year, is essential!

Probiotics are live bacteria found naturally in the gut, as well as in select foods and supplements. When taken in adequate amounts, they can provide health benefits. Research has shown that probiotics can support digestive health and immune function, including reducing antibioticassociated diarrhoea, improving resilience to infections, and improving digestion of lactose.

Joint or Muscular Pain Joint and muscular pain are both common, and can usually present with symptoms such as stiffness, weakness, pain and inflammation.
Commonly, these types of pain may be the result of a sporting injury, arthritis, osteoporosis or another health condition. For more severe and continuous pain, additional treatment and advice should be sourced. It is important to seek medical advice if you are experiencing any of the following in association with your joint or muscular pain: • Your pain persists for longer than 3 days • The pain is severe and unexplained • Signs of infection (swelling, redness around the tender muscle, fever) • Poor circulation in the area where you have the pain • Your pain seems to be associated with starting or changing a dose of a particular medicine • The pain is not relieved by any over-the counter solutions • Having associated nausea or vomiting Ask your Advantage pharmacist for advice on how to manage joint or muscular pain!
