By Sidney Sullivan USAG Bavaria Public Affairs U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria officially welcomed Command Sgt. Maj. Sebastian A. Camacho, during an assumption of responsibility
ceremony at the Tower Barracks Physical Fitness Center on July 9. Camacho assumed his duties as the senior enlisted leader by receiving the command’s colors from Col. Christopher R. Danbeck, commander of USAG Bavaria.
The ceremony was attended by special guests including Installation Management Command-Europe Director Mr. Tommy Mize and Command Sgt. Maj. Samara Pitre, 7th Army Training Command Brig. Gen. Joseph Hilbert and Command Sgt. Maj. Mark Morgan, and a limited number of host nation dignitaries from counties and communities representing Bavaria. The ceremony opened with a proper Bavarian welcome, provided by the Black Powder Shooters of Volsbach. Then Danbeck took the podium to thank all the guests in attendance, and welcome the newest member of his team. “You are joining a truly amazing team,” he said to the incoming command sergeant major. “Each day, I’m blown away by what they’re doing across our four installations. As a team, we continue to provide world class service to our large and truly diverse community on a daily basis. Our partnerships in Bavaria set the bar across
Installation Management Command — not only here in Europe, but I think back in CONUS as well. We’re excited that you’re here Sergeant Major, now let’s saddle up and get back to work.” After assuming his responsibilities, Camacho expressed great appreciation for his mentors and the entire USAG Bavaria team – especially since he and his family in-processed from overseas. “It truly is ‘Better in Bavaria,’” he said. “It’s better in Bavaria, because of its people. It’s better in Bavaria, because we have passionate teammates. It’s better in Bavaria, because of the professional customer service you receive from any of the directorates, departments and services. It’s better in Bavaria, because of the strong relationships forged between our Soldiers, families, civilians and communities, as well as our local nationals and host nation partners. In less than two weeks of being on ground, I already feel a sense of one
community. And I want to thank you all in advance for doing your part in keeping Bavaria a better place to work and call home.” Camacho is a native of Saipan, Northern Marianas Islands, and he enlisted in the U.S. Army in August 2000 as a fire support specialist, also known as 13F. He completed Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Sill, Okla. Prior to his assignment with USAG Bavaria, Camacho served as Command Sgt. Maj. of the Field Artillery Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment. And his overseas deployments comprised three tours to Iraq – including Operation Iraqi Freedom I in April 2003. As command sergeant major for USAG Bavaria, Camacho serves as the command’s senior enlisted advisor on matters relating to operations, training, morale and welfare of the garrison’s more than 22,500 Soldiers, Department of the Army civilians and contractors located at four installations across Bavaria.

USAG Bavaria firefighters assist German flooding recovery mission By Andreas Kreuzer USAG Bavaria Public Affairs Seven firefighters employed with U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria provided volunteer support and humanitarian aid to the city of Altenahr, from July 24 to 28. The Rheinland-Pfalz area experienced catastrophic flooding in July, which resulted in village-wide property damages and citizen death. When Rheinland-Pfalz leadership reached out for emergency assistance, Bavarian State fire departments found the right volunteers and received employer approval to discharge them from their regular work. The employer would later receive reimbursed from the State of Bavaria. “This was a quick decision,” said Tobias Zwicker, assistant fire chief of USAG Bavaria. “We called Col. Christopher Danbeck, the USAG Bavaria Garrison Commander, for his approval and got a thumb up right away, if we could also ensure the safety of the USAG Bavaria footprint.” To accommodate the work load on-post work schedules were changed and co-workers, who were supposed to be off, jumped in to fill the gap. According to Zwicker, the willingness to help out was extremely high. With schedules rearranged at USAG Bavaria, seven garrison fire
fighters joined the rescue efforts. The garrison fire department also provided some equipment for the mission. In addition to USAG Bavaria fire fighter duties, three volunteer with the Grafenwoehr Fire Department, three with the Eschenbach Fire Department, and one with the Kirchenthumbach Fire Department. Alex Richter was one of the fire fighters on the mission. Currently, he is the station chief of the USAG Bavaria Airfield Fire Station and the commandant of the off-post volunteer Grafenwoehr Fire Station. He began his career 30 years ago at 16-years-old, while volunteering for the local fire department. Now, he has over 20 years experience as a fire fighter with the U.S. Army. “This was the toughest mission I’ve ever had in my life as a fire fighter,” said Richter. Due to the flooding, citizens of Altenahr and the surrounding county suffered greatly. Approximately 42,000 people of
a 56,000 population are affected. There are now 17,000 homeless people, because the flooding washed away 467 buildings and over 3,000 buildings are damaged. Furthermore, 766 people were injured, over 140 people died and some are still not identified. During the support mission, Richter said that tasks were very versatile. Mud disposal, drinking water provision, building a fence around a cemetery, investigation tasks and a traffic accident were just some of the duties. “You always have to expect dead bodies at work, but thank God our team didn’t,” said Richter. The seven garrison fire fighters joined the Oberpfalz team, which consisted of nearly 100 fire fighters and 20 vehicles from 15 stations. These volunteer fire fighters — all with intensive training — were a big advantage for the rescue mission overall, as official first responders and volunteers worked hand-in-hand together.

“WEISSWURSTFRÜSTÜCK”:
Everything to know about Bavaria’s traditional white sausage By Natalie Simmel USAG Bavaria PAO Intern One of the most anticipated meals in southern Germany is the "Weisswurstfruehstueck," or white sausage breakfast. Eating Weisswurst, or white sausage, is one of the many traditions a person can partake in when coming to Bavaria. But why do Germans eat it, and what is the right way to eat it? Here are some helpful tips and tricks that will help you impress some of the locals.
How do you cook it?
1. Weisswürste are supposed to be cooked in hot, but not boiling water, and warmed up for 15 to 20 minutes. 2. Once they are hot, they are ready to be eaten and removed from the water. When you order Weisswürste in a restaurant, they are usually served in a bowl of hot water to keep them warm longer. But don't be mistaken, the liquid is not a soup. 3. Remove Weisswürste from the water and enjoy while still warm. Warning: White sausages are delicate. You should never boil the sausages, because they tend to burst open in boiling water. Additionally, do not leave remaining Weisswürste submerged too long, because they will lose flavor and become watery. SUMMER 2021
When do you eat it? The best time to eat Weisswürste is in the morning, and they should never be eaten after noon. An old saying goes, "No Weisswurst should ever hear the afternoon church bells." This tradition stems from the lack of preservation options during the 19th century. The meat could not be kept cool, so consumption was necessary before turning bad. Even though preservation options have since developed, this tradition is still alive today. Since the dish might be a little heavy early in the morning, the perfect time to eat Weisswürste is around 10 a.m.
How do you eat it?
There are many ways to eat a Weisswurst. Depending on where you are, there are different ways and rules for consumption. For example, the real connoisseur would never strip the sausage naked all at once, but would instead skin and cut it part by part — only revealing the piece of the sausage about to be eaten. However, in Munich you do not use a knife at all. Instead, you "zuzel" the sausage link out of the skin by eating it with your hand and sucking the meat out of the sausage casing. As unmannered as this sounds, it is acceptable throughout Munich, but only Munich. And especially in the Munich area, the amount of sausages you eat is essential. Never eat an even number of white sausage links. While some say it brings bad luck, the real origin www.Bavariannews.com
of this rule is unknown. The most important rule is to never eat the skin of Weisswurst. Contrary to other sausages, such as Bratwurst, the skin should not be eaten because it is chewy and ruins the taste.
What do you eat with it?
Traditionally, Weisswurst is eaten with pretzels and sweet mustard. As for refreshments, drinking beer with a white sausage breakfast is an unquestionable part of the tradition. Since Germany is a beer nation, there are plenty of alcohol-free options to choose from as well. Just remember, Weissbier, or white beer, goes best with Weisswurst.
Where do you eat it?
An interesting fact about this tradition is that it does not apply to all of Germany. This tradition is mainly held in southern Germany — especially in the area surrounding Munich. Since eating white sausages is the No. 1 symbol linked to Bavarian food culture, a metaphoric white sausage equator was established over the years. It describes an imaginary cultural border between the parts of Bavaria that eat white sausages and the rest of Germany. Mostly, the northern parts of Germany neither produce, nor offer, white sausages. But no matter where you are, you can impress any Bavarian native with this Weisswurst eating knowledge. PAGE 5
Secretary of Defense Mandates COVID-19 Vaccinations for Service Members By David Vergun DOD News Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III yesterday issued a memorandum directing mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations for service members, a Pentagon official said today. John F. Kirby, Pentagon press secretary, said only Food and Drug Administration-approved vaccines will be mandatory. The secretary has determined — after careful consultation with medical experts and military leaders and with the support of the president — that mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations for service members are necessary to protect the health and readiness of the force, Kirby said. On Aug. 23, the FDA gave full approval to the Comirnaty vaccine — previously known as the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine — for individuals 16 years of age and older. Before Aug. 23, the vaccine was available for use through an FDA emergency use authorization. Kirby said vaccines other than Comirnaty will not be made mandatory, but that could change if the FDA issues full approval for others. The memo directs the secretaries of the military departments to immediately begin full vaccination of all members of the department on active duty or in the Guard or Reserve, who aren’t yet fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Service members who are actively participating in COVID-19 clinical trials are exempt from mandatory vaccination until the trial is complete to avoid invalidating
clinical trial results, the memo states. The secretaries are also directed to “impose ambitious timelines for implementation and to report regularly on vaccination completion using established systems for other mandatory vaccine reporting,” the memo states. “The secretary has communicated to the military departments to execute this mandatory vaccination program with, obviously, skill and professionalism, which we always do, but also with a measure of compassion,” Kirby said. Service members with preexisting conditions who are advised against being vaccinated by their doctors would be exempt from mandatory vaccinations, Kirby said, adding there may also be possible exemptions on religious grounds. Service members outside those two categories who still object will be offered a chance to sit down with a physician and have that physician communicate to them the risks that they’re taking by being unvaccinated, Kirby said. They’ll also be offered a chance to sit down with those in their chains of command to talk about the risks that their objection will impose on the unit and on the force and on their teammates, he added. “Commanders have a wide range of tools available to them to help their teammates make the right decision for themselves, for their families, and for their units, and the secretary expects that the commanders will use those tools, short of having to use the UCMJ,” he said, referring to the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria’s Family and MWR program hosted a night of actionpacked bouts, during its USAG Bavaria Boxing Invitational Championship on Aug. 14. With 36 competing service members representing installations across Germany, several rounds came down to the wire at the Rose Barracks Memorial Fitness Center. For more than 20 years, the garrison regularly hosted both invitational boxing events and higher level boxing championships; furthermore, the USAG Bavaria Boxing Team won the Installation Management CommandEurope Boxing Championships in 2019. So after the pandemic caused a pause of events in 2020, competitors and spectators alike were thrilled to return to the ring. “It was an awesome evening of competition for our Soldiers, and a fun filled evening of entertainment for our community members,” said event director Serge Kearse of USAG Bavaria FMWR. “There was a great turnout from our competitors and spectators — way above our expectation! And no doubt, everyone was having a great time from the cheers and chants the entire evening.” Among the competitors, 20 represented USAG Bavaria – Vilseck, eight represented USAG Bavaria – Grafenwoehr, three represented USAG Stuttgart, two represented USAG Bavaria – Hohenfels, two represented USAG Wiesbaden and one represented Ramstein Air Base. Over the course of the evening, 18 bouts took place between active-duty service members. All boxed with great endurance and skill, but above all there was one standout competitor who won the Best Boxer Belt — Sgt. Sherman Buckley Jr. of the 493rd Petroleum Support Company, 18th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 16th Sustainment Brigade, 21st Theater Sustainment Command. “Just being in the ring felt like a dream, and all the supporter and people cheering made the experience so much sweeter,” said Buckley after winning the title. “I was honestly shocked and joyful at the same time. I’ve had so many guys I know win this title, and for me to win it was a blessing.” According to the new title holder, the experiences and lessons he learned while being a Solider helped him prepare for the championship. “Keep God first, stay focus and put in the work,” he said. “Despite the time of day or the season — even when you’re tired and don’t feel like training — train anyway. Train hard, fight easy and accomplish your goals and dreams. They’re closer than you think. [You] just got to work for it.” Buckley is part of the Grafenwoehr Boxing Team. His boxing experience includes two years training for exercise and two years training formally. He continued training ever since the first COVID-19 lockdown occurred in 2020. “I would like to shout-out the Grafenwoehr Boxing Team, Coach Ivory Marshall, Coach Wright and Coach Ali,” said Buckley. “They are truly the best team in Germany. I wouldn’t have asked for a better team to be with.” SUMMER 2021

USCIS hosts first virtual naturalization ceremony at USAG Bavaria By Sidney Sullivan USAG Bavaria Public Affairs U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services conducted its first virtual naturalization ceremony at U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria, on both Wednesday and Thursday. This twoday ceremony was part of a special program to naturalize active-duty military members and their families. In total, 50 candidates from 25 countries were administered the Oath of Allegiance. Included in the ceremony were special remarks from the DHS Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, USCIS Washington District Director Ron Rosenberg and USAG Bavaria Garrison Commander Col. Christopher Danbeck. “We’re excited to conduct this cross-Atlantic celebration of your United States citizenship,” Rosenberg said virtually from the USCIS Headquarters in Washington D.C. “Despite the challenges we have faced during the pandemic, USCIS and Department of Defense partners located in Army and Navy installations worldwide have been committed to naturalizing our esteemed colleagues of the military, who undertake public service even before becoming a U.S. citizen.
It’s an honor to provide these services no matter the obstacle and we sincerely appreciate the collaboration with DoD.” Due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, this was the first virtual naturalization ceremony

and thank you for your truly selfless service as a spouse or child of a service member,” he said. “But an even bigger thanks to all of your willingness and desire to become a member of the greatest nation in the world, the United States of America. In a few minutes, after taking the oath, you will become an American and add your customs, traditions, history and values to our melting pot — further enriching our great nation’s identity and diversity.” Following the national anthem, Mayorkas virtually administered the Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America. Mayorkas was sworn in as Secretary of DHS by President Joe Biden in February, and he is the first Latino and immigrant confirmed to serve as Secretary of DHS. After administering the oath, he addressed the new citizens reflecting on how America was able to provide fundamental rights and liberties to his own family, being that he was naturalized in 1972, and how America continues to do so for all individuals around the world. “The answer is quite clear — it is because of all of you,” he said. “There is no more noble, or selfless, calling than the calling to serve in our Armed Forces. The fact that
you have done so before you were even United States citizens speaks of your extraordinary commitment to those principles and values that make our country great and speaks to your extraordinary patriotism. We owe you, and your colleagues in the Armed Forces, an everlasting debt of gratitude for what you have done, what you do now and what you mean forever to our country.” Ceremony candidates who took the oath are stationed at garrisons across Germany, including: USAG Ansbach, USAG Baumholder, USAG Bavaria, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz, USAG Stuttgart and USAG Wiesbaden. “I usually speak at a naturalization ceremony about what new citizens can do for their country. Those words I need not express to all of you,” Mayorkas added. “You are in our Armed Forces, and the question that we ask ourselves is really what can we do for you in gratitude for the sacrifice you make to really allow us all to be free and to allow our country — as the Colonel expressed — to be the greatest country in the world. Congratulations on this special day. Congratulations for what you have accomplished. And thank you so much for everything you do.”

year according to the World Health Organization. In the United States, one person completes a suicide every 11 minutes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There is no vaccine or ultimate cure to conquer suicide; however, not all suicide thoughts have to end with death. Suicide is preventable, and with appropriate measures and actions, the world can prevent, reduce and combat suicide. The act of suicide may be challenging for us to comprehend, as suicide is a complex problem. There is no one single Explanation that triggers this behavior. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shared that 54% of people who died by suicide did not have a known mental health condition. They reported that contributing factors relating to suicide include the following (see figure 1). How are these factors relevant to USAG Bavaria? According to the Unit Risk Inventory, an anonymous survey administered at USAG Bavaria in CY2020 revealed that 10% of those surveyed reported experiencing suicidal ideations. Out of that 10%, 30% reported having a plan. Of those 30%, 31% reported to having actually attempted suicide. In addition, these are the risks and warning signs associated with suicidal behavior (see figure 2). These identified risk factors are a key to preventing suicide when combined with appropriate intervention measures. September is National Suicide Awareness Month, which highlights suicide prevention efforts by advocating for prevention strategies and networking to share resources and education. Connectedness, the theme for this year’s DoD Suicide Prevention Month will be shared by the hashtag #BeThere. We can be an active participant in preventing suicide by connecting with the family, friends, community and resources that can play a vital role in preventing suicide. The Army Substance Abuse Program has taken an innovative approach this year to further prevent suicide by collaborating with the Noncommissioned Officer Academy. With support from the 7th ATC and NCOA Command Teams, Suicide Prevention Awareness Training for Leaders was implemented in July 2020. What can we as a USAG Bavaria community members do to prevent suicide? What steps are you willing to take to prevent suicide? Here are three suggestions from ASAP: 1. Follow the guidelines of the Armyapproved suicide prevention and awareness training model: Ask, Care, Escort (ACE). It only takes a minute to: ASK – Ask the question directly: Are you thinking of killing yourself? It’s not an easy question. Have the courage to ask the question. CARE – Be there. Actively listen with understanding and empathy. Keep them safe. Remove any means
www.Bavariannews.com
that could be used for self-injury. Calmly control the situation – do not use force. Be safe. ESCORT – Connect. Escort them to Chaplain, behavioral health professional, or primary care provider, Military Police, and the Military Crisis Line at 1-800-2738255 (00800-1273-8255 - or DSN 118). Never leave them alone. 2. Participate in preventing suicide and reducing stigma. According to the National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI), September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month — a time to raise awareness on this stigmatized, and often taboo, topic. In addition to shifting public perception, we use this month to spread hope and vital information to people affected by suicide. Our goal is ensuring that individuals, friends and families have access to the resources they need to discuss suicide prevention and to seek help. 3. Challenge yourself to reach out to others and think about what changes you are willing to initiate to prevent suicide starting today? ASAP continues to collaborate with other key agencies in the community collectively to design various events to impact the USAG Bavaria community hoping to target, reduce and/or eliminate death by suicide. One suicide is too many. Let’s connect together, be a resource and #BeThere for someone who may be struggling with suicide or life. If you or anyone is struggling with suicidal ideation, you are not alone. Peregrine falcon nest found within Grafenwoehr Training Area’s historic landmark
U.S. Army photo by Stefan Haertl/USAG Bavaria Environmental Division
A young peregrine falcon within nesting site in Grafenwoehr Water Tower.
By Megan McKnight USAG Bavarian Environmental Division During a routine inspection of the Forest House in June, U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria Environmental Division staff member Stefan Haertl overheard a nearby peregrine falcon cry and observed an adult bird enter the historic Grafenwoehr Water Tower. Upon further investigation personnel from the Environmental Division were “pleasantly surprised” to find a pair of falcons, and their nestling, occupying the location. The Water Tower was previously a known kestrel nesting site, so discovering the peregrine falcons was quite unexpected. This pair represents the second breeding pair of peregrine falcons observed within GTA, and the first observed falcon nest within the Water Tower. This species of bird pairs for life and typically returns to previous nesting locations. Now that this pair are established with in the Water Tower, the Environmental Division may be able to expect their return next year. Populations of peregrine falcons could help manage nuisance bird species across the Training Area. Known as the fastest bird in the world, peregrine falcons can reach speeds of up to 320 kph during a hunting dive, or stoop. These spectacular dives may be observed over the Tower Barracks Parade Field as the falcons hunt pigeons and other birds. As of mid-June, the nestling has fledged – left the nesting site in the Water Tower – but it can still be observed flying around the Parade Field with its parents learning to hunt and begging for food. Peregrine falcons were once widely distributed across the world, and in the 1950s there were an estimated 900 breeding pairs throughout Germany. By the early 1980s the population declined dramatically, due to widespread use of pesticides like DDT, environmental toxins like PCB and nest robberies for illegal trade and falconry. During this time, populations in northern and eastern Germany were extirpated and only 60 breeding pairs remained within Bavaria and Baden Wuerttemberg. Today, due to environmental regulations that restrict the use of certain chemicals and toxins as well the conservation efforts of many, there are between 210 to 230 breeding pairs in Bavaria.

USAG Bavaria professional honored with major civilian awards By Andreas Kreuzer USAG Bavaria Public Affairs U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria professional Marlon S. Laidley was recognized for his excellent service to the military community twice in one day. On July 15, 2021, he was awarded both the Frederick E. Vollrath award and the Adjutant General’s Corps Civilian of the Year. Laidley is a human resources assistant in the USAG Bavaria Military Personnel Division at Tower Barracks. He and his team process up to 3,000 passports per week and work numerous hours of overtime. During an All Hands meeting with the USAG Bavaria workforce, garrison commander Col. Christopher Danbeck awarded Laidley with the Frederick E. Vollrath award. “This is great,” said Danbeck. “By the size of this award you can see how important it is. Congratulations, we are so amazingly proud of you!” This award is named after retired Lt. Gen. Frederick E. Vollrath. He served as the Deputy Chief of Staff G-1 Personnel of the United States Army. He spent his career in the human resources field from 1962 to 1998. “If you have a family member crying in your office because of an emergency and the need to go to the U.S., you can’t go home,” said Laidley. “You stay until 7 or 8 p.m. to help them.”

Later that day Laidley received the Adjutant General’s Corps Civilian of the Year award for his outstanding work and leadership, during a Department of Human Resource presentation. Two major civilian
awards were received in the same day. “Mr. Laidley is a truly valued member of the team, and he has long been deserving of this recognition,” said Robert Reed, director of USAG Bavaria Human Resource. “He is

beloved by his customers and his coworkers, and goes out of his way to take care of everyone that needs assistance — even if they need help from a section other than his own. The garrison is lucky to have him.”

LANGUAGE NEED NOT BE A BARRIER IN GERMANY By Molly Hayden Moving to a new country yields an obvious learning curve, and Germany is no exception. Driving on the autobahn for the first time often warrants a brief word with the Almighty, and seeing the word “Ausfahrt” larger than life will no doubt expel fits of laughter. Learning a new language can be overwhelming, but when it comes to your new surroundings, communication is often more than just words. With a few easy tips you’ll say “tschuess” to old habits and “hallo” to embracing new adventures. Greetings and salutations “Gruess Gott” is the standard welcome greeting in Southern Germany, and means “God greet thee.” Using this greeting in the North, however, may raise some eyebrows. (It would be like a Texan using “Howdy” in New York City). When in doubt,
INVEST IN YOUR OWN FUTURE • Individual planning, Germany wide and Benelux etc. • Use your LQA, OHA and other allowances for your own home • Mortgages available to service members, DoD civilians, contractors • Also to EU/ UN / NATO employees, non-German tax-payers and expatriates • More than 20 years of experience
“Guten Morgen,” (good morning) “Guten Tag,” (good day) and “Guten Abend” (good evening) are all acceptable greetings Germanywide. Bavarians also say “Servus” as a form of greeting (both for hello and good-bye). It is a word they learned from the Roman occupiers 2,000 years ago and literally means “servant.” Romans used to call out for “Servus” when they required service. At that time Bavarians thought it was a greeting, so it crept into the culture where it remains today. The language barrier Have you ever had a German tell you something like “you will come here” or “you must sign there?” It sounds horribly impolite in English, like they’re ordering you around, (and we Americans do not like to be ordered around!) But the truth is, they are not. The issue stems from English and German being two completely different languages (and cultures), and while words sound similar, they may mean slightly different things.

For example, the English “must” and the German “muessen” sound very much alike and even mean something similar – just not exactly the same. In English, “must” indicates a mandatory requirement or order (“you must do this, or else …”). In German, “Du musst” simply means “you have to” or “you need to.” It’s a poignant way to express the need. It’s a similar story with a statement like “you will come here.” Most likely, they’re trying to ask you politely to come with them. Next time you encounter such seeming impoliteness, don’t take it personally, especially if you notice that the German’s English isn’t the best. There is always a language barrier to take into account. Keep it simple No one expects Americans to step off a plane and speak fluent German, in fact, no one expects that to happen if you’ve lived here for five years. In the same manner, don’t assume everyone you encounter speaks English. Keeping it simple is the most effective way of getting your point across. For example, if you and your family are traveling through Germany and you’d like to ask someone to take a photograph, instead of bombarding a non-native English speaker with a mouthful of words, simply hold up the camera and say, “photo, please.” Englishspeaking or not, they will most likely understand your need. Hands are also an acceptable way of communicating. When at a bakery or restaurant, simply point to the item that you would like adding a “bitte” (thank you) for posterity. It’s also important to learn phrases like “Ich spreche nicht Deutsch” (I do not speak German), or “Sprechen Sie Englisch?” (Do you speak English?) to help set the tone of conversation. A Bavarian way of life Those of you who speak German may have already had their encounters with the local dialect and it is not so easy to understand, even for other Bavarians! Below are a few www.Bavariannews.com
basic words to help you fit in like an Oberpfaelzer. •

Leberkaese: Bavarian food specialty consisting of beef and pork and spices (but neither liver nor cheese as the name would suggest). Mass: 1 liter (1/4 gallon) of Bavarian beer, served in a Masskrug (large beer mug). Seidl: 1/2 liter (1/8 gallon) of Bavarian beer, served in a Seidlkruegl (small beer mug). Freibier: Sponsored free beer. damisch: Simply put, means crazy or unintelligent. Gaudi: This word means fun and originates from the Latin “gaudere” meaning to rejoice, be joyful, and take delight. Wolpertinger: This very rare animal is only found in Bavaria and is a crossing of several native animals. According to statements of witnesses, it also lives in the JMTC Training Area. Preiss: This term refers to non-Bavarian persons from the Northern, Western or Eastern parts of Germany living above the Weisswurst equator (the Main River being its natural border). You may have heard the motto “It’s nice to be a Preiss, but it’s higher to be a Bayer!” Kirwa: A town fest in celebration of the consecration of a church. Dirndl: Traditional Bavarian dress for ladies. Lederhosen: Traditional Bavarian leather trousers for men. Juchzer (also known as Gurzerer): This primal scream of the Upper Palatine population may possibly equate to “need more beer.”
•
Schnodaheupfl: Rhymesong in Bavarian dialect, at times containing bawdy (yet hilarious) content.
It’s all Greek to me With common expressions, Americans and Germans often say the same thing, but express it very differently. Below are a few common phrases in English followed by their German translations. • It’s all Greek to me = Ich verstehe nur Bahnhof” (I only understand “Bahnhof”). • I’m fed up with it = Ich habe die Nase voll” (I have the nose full). • Keep your fingers crossed for me = Drueck mir die Daumen (press your thumbs for me). • Don’t buy a pig in a poke = Kaufe nie die Katze im Sack (never buy the cat in the sack). • A miss is as good as a mile = Knapp daneben ist auch vorbei (a near miss is still a miss). • The early bird catches the worm = Morgenstund hat Gold im Mund (morning hour has gold in its mouth). • Bad weeds grow tall = Unkraut vergeht nicht (weed doesn’t die) • Don’t trust the cat to save the cream = Mache nicht den Bock zum Gaertner (don’t make the goat a gardener). Learning a bit about the German culture and language can ease the transition of living in a new place, or make the country you’ve called home for a while seem that much more like home. But start now, because as we all know “the morning hour has gold in its mouth.” The libraries at USAG Bavaria provide a wealth of language resources. Learn more at www. library.eur.army.mil.
