Forum empowers women to lead By Brenda Law U.S. Africa Command Public Affairs
W
omen took center stage during the U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart’s fifth annual Women’s Leadership Forum at the Swabian Special Events Center on Patch Barracks March 27. More than 130 women and a few men turned out to network and hear from civilian and military leaders representing U.S. Africa Command, U.S. European Command, Marine Forces Europe/Africa, 52nd Signal Battalion, and USAG Stuttgart. The forum was sponsored by the USAG Stuttgart Equal Employment Opportunity Office’s Special Emphasis Committee. The garrison’s Special Emphasis Program promotes equal opportunity in the hiring, advancement, training and treatment of women, minorities and individuals with disabilities. Each year the EEO Office analyzes the on-board federal workforce of the commands and agencies in the Stuttgart military community. “We want to see the numbers of women in higher ranking positions grow,” said Eshe Faulcon, an EEO specialist who oversees the program. The forum aims to equip women with knowledge and tools to advance in their careers. “It’s also an opportunity for women to connect with each other,” Faulcon said.

This year’s theme was “Aspiring to lead, inspiring to empower” with presentations and workshops designed to motivate participants to do just that. The morning keynote speaker, Army Brig. Gen. Jody Daniels, AFRICOM’s deputy director for the Intelligence and Knowledge Development Directorate, emphasized the importance of taking risks, challenging oneself, and not being afraid to make mistakes.
“At times I could not see myself doing things; I had supportive leaders and mentors who’d say, ‘Jody, you should go for that,’ so I’d focus my energy toward reaching that next goal,” said Daniels, whose career spans more than 30 years of active and reserve service.

Concern, action trump perfection in supervisors Commentary by Chief Master Sgt. Matt Proietti Air Force Reserve Command Yellow Ribbon Program
O
ne of the best senior NCOs I’ve ever worked with was a troubled man whose personal demons cost him his career. This senior master sergeant was an alcoholic whose drinking caused him to be sent back early from an overseas assignment in 1987 when he was about the age I am now. He landed in my office in California. A year later, shortly after I left active-duty service for the Air Force Reserve, he barricaded himself in a hotel room and went on a bender during a conference at our major command headquarters. He was forced to retire. Despite this, he otherwise was a good leader to the enlisted staff and took good care of the office, in general. Living on a steady diet of coffee and cigarettes, he looked a good 10 years older than he was. He was a bundle of energy who didn’t so much walk down our halls as dash. Like me, he was a New England native and had a thick Yankee accent despite having lived outside of the region for much of his life. He was loud, too, and had a thousand old military sayings that connected a staff of Airmen from the 1980s to the earliest years of our service. I liked him immediately and, more importantly, I respected him because he was there to work. I’m sure the officer in charge of our shop was nervous about inheriting this damaged old sergeant, but he turned out to be a blessing to us. His imprint was all over that place as soon as he arrived. He was the ultimate practitioner of “management by walking around.” “What’s with all the levity in hee-ah?” he would say before smiling broadly, turning on his heels and disappearing back to his stack of paperwork or to the main office next door so everyone knew he was available if needed, which he was. He was a master on the phone. He had a way of making the most inconsequential things sound important to the person on the other end of the line so he would get the help he needed to complete a task. I, too, prefer to use the phone or go in person when I need help with something and attribute that to the example he set more than a quarter-century ago. He nearly paralyzed a timid staff sergeant in our shop by asking to see a copy of the office budget upon meeting her. Everyone suspected she wasn’t paying it proper attention, but we didn’t know quite how to tell. He did. He immediately identified some problems and set about fixing them with her. He didn’t disparage her publicly, though I’m sure they had a private talk about her fulfilling her duties. He exuded confidence in his Airmen, which made us believe in ourselves. I lived in a dormitory on base and got a phone call from him one weekend night. Our unit had kicked off a surprise exercise to test our skills responding to a mock aircraft crash. He was with the crisis action team and needed me to work “on scene,” a location near the imitation accident site where representatives from various base agencies met to gather accurate information to guide our response to the situation. I had never done it before, and he sensed my nervousness.
Living on a steady diet of coffee and cigarettes, he looked a good 10 years older than he was. “I need you to do it. I can’t reach anybody else. You’ll be fine,” he said. Because I recognized that he knew his business, I trusted him in sending me there. He was right: I did a good job. Even a flawed person can be a great mentor or leader. He didn’t simply know the names of my favorite sports teams or rock musicians. He knew about my plans in life. He knew about my family background. He knew about my dreams. He met my friends from other units around base and asked them about their jobs and their goals. You can’t fake the sort of interest he held in other people’s lives. His concern was genuine. He worked hard all day, every day and that - coupled with that outrageous accent — would be enough for him to stick out in my mind. What cemented him there, though, was the direct action he took at a crucial point in my life that still pays dividends for me today. Around March 1, 1988, the Air Force announced that it was forcing out people whose service contracts ended later that year if they had decided not to reenlist. We had to leave by April 30. I made cursory plans to return to my hometown, but still had a job to do for the Air Force and focused on doing it well until the end. A few weeks before I left the service, he called me into his office. “You like the Air Force, don’t you?” he asked. I said that I did. “You like your job, right?” That was obvious to anyone. I thought he was trying to convince me to stay on active duty. Instead, he suggested that I consider the Air Force Reserve or Air National Guard. He said making some money at an occupation I was comfortable with would help with my transition to civilian life. He knew I was moving back to Massachusetts so, with my approval, he picked up the phone right then and called back to the wing at Westover Air Reserve Base. He told someone in the public affairs office a little about me and wrote something down on a slip of paper. He thanked the person, hung up and handed me the note. “Call this number when you get home,” he said. “It’s your new office.” That’s how easy it was for me to join the Air Force Reserve 26 years ago. The short notice the Air Force gave me to leave the service left no time for a Reserve or Guard recruiter to contact me. Without this senior NCO’s perception and effort on my behalf, I may have left the Air Force for good at 22. Instead, I will serve at least until 50. I worked under this imperfect man for no more than eight months but he left a lasting impression on me. I don’t think the Air Force erred in making him retire. I regret that he didn’t get his drinking under control because the service lost one heck of a resource when he took off the uniform.

hef Dirk Yeaton, the “Grill Sergeant” at the Murphy-Goode Winery in Northern California, visited the Stuttgart military community March 26 and 27 to prepare food for service members, civilians and their families, and share tips on cooking, and tasting and selecting wines. The trip was organized by America’s Chefs, a nonprofit, public benefit corporation that brings famous and interesting chefs to military locations to provide entertainment, education and boost morale. U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart’s Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation arranged several events for Yeaton to showcase his talents. The visit began with an evening of barbecue and wine tasting at the Patch Community Club March 26. Having worked the grill all day, Yeaton spent the evening putting the finishing touches on ribs and pulled pork, and shared cooking tips. Also on hand were wine experts from Kendall Jackson, the parent company of the Murphy-Goode Winery. They provided samples of some of their wines and offered tips on tasting wine and pairing wine with food. The next morning, Yeaton had breakfast with cooks at the 1st Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) Dining Facility on Panzer Kaserne, and helped them prepare the lunch meal. While grilling steaks, chicken and ribs, Yeaton and the dining facility cooks shared their trade secrets and a few Army stories, as Yeaton is a U.S. Army veteran. Yeaton enlisted in the Army in 1984 as a food service specialist for very simple reasons. “I knew I wasn’t college material, I liked cooking, and I wanted to get out of Littleton, New Hampshire,” Yeaton said. “So I signed up with the only recruiter in town, and off I went to basic training.”
Yeaton served for several years at Fort Bragg, N.C., before leaving the service to pursue his passion of cooking. “I really enjoyed the service, but it was really, at that time, a job like any other,” Yeaton said. “There was no war or any sort of conflict, so we just cooked at the base dining facility. What these service members are doing now, it’s pretty incredible. They sacrifice a lot, and I just want to give back a little.” For Yeaton, giving back means more than just visiting with service members and cooking for them. His employer gives 50 cents from every bottle of its “Homefront Red” to Operation Homefront, a nonprofit organization that assists U.S. military personnel and their families with financial assistance, as well as counseling and recovery support. Operation Homefront is a part of the Combined Federal Campaign. Yeaton is not at all secretive about his recipes and shares them freely on the winery’s website. He is also glad to share his cooking techniques, tactics and procedures with service members who seemed thrilled to take advantage of the opportunity. “You think you know what you are doing, but then you listen to a professional like him and learn something new,” said Staff Sgt. Michael Macias, a food service noncommissioned officer at the 1/10 SFG DFAC. “It was really cool of him to come do this, and we learned from the experience and enjoyed it.” Yeaton’s visit culminated the evening of March 27 at the Kelley Club on Kelley Barracks. The focus was on how to make the best burger and pair it with a great wine. Yeaton was just as open with his recipes and wine tips as he was the previous evening. “When I was younger I used to be very secretive about my recipes, but I learned that doesn’t really do me any good. It’s much better to share what I know with others,” Yeaton said.
U.S. Forces personnel in Germany can now get seasonal license plates for vehicles they do not use throughout the year. “Seasonal license plates have two small numbers on the right side of the plate indicating the months between which the vehicle is legal to drive,” said Tom Lorenzini, chief registrar at the U.S. Army Europe Vehicle Registry. “This will be a very easy process for the end user,” he added. Lorenzini said owners of motorcycles, campers, convertibles or vintage collector cars that do not have historical plates will benefit most from the seasonal plate system. The new system means owners will no longer have to make extra trips to their local vehicle registration offices to register seasonal use vehicles as nonoperational during the periods the owner does not drive them. It can also reduce the cost of liability insurance during the time the vehicle is off the road, depending upon the insurance company. License plates will be valid for up to three years for new vehicles, two years for vehicles less than 10 years old and one year for vehicles older than 10 years. The plates will allow German and military police to easily see when a vehicle should not be on the road and punish violators. The seasonal plates have been available since April 1. However, registry officials said vehicle owners will have to be a little patient when ordering the new plates because each must be made individually to match the months the owner intends to drive the vehicle.
Passports needed for travels
U.S. Army Europe Office of the Provost Marshal officials want to remind members of the American forces community in Europe to carry their passports when traveling to countries to which they are not assigned. A common misconception is that European borders without checkpoints can be crossed freely. However, while this may be true for residents of countries within the European Union’s Schengen zone, the agreement does not extend to U.S. or other non-EU citizens. In some European countries federal police have the right to pull vehicles over and check passports without suspecting a person of wrongdoing, and in some nations only a national form of identification such as a passport is recognized as valid ID. A passport also establishes citizenship if its bearer needs assistance from a U.S. embassy or consulate. A military ID or Status of Forces Agreement card is not a substitute for a passport. Penalties for being caught without a passport are fines, searches and detainment. For more information regarding European Union travel requirements, visit the official European Union website at http://europa.eu. Follow the “English” link, then “Your Life in the EU.”

Forum empowers women . . . . . . . . . Continued from page 1
“I realized that I did not have to know everything in the beginning of each new challenge, but that I needed to learn and become the best I could be in every job. That is my advice to you — being the best gives you credibility and increases your confidence,’ Daniels said. Vice Adm. Charles Martoglio, the EUCOM deputy commander, took time from his busy schedule to offer participants his “10 leadership rules for success.” Inspiring speeches from accomplished leaders was just part of the agenda. Attendees rotated through four workshops covering financial readiness, professional and personal growth, networking, and leadership. Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Teresa Schorer, the first sergeant for AFRICOM, facilitated the leadership workshop for a second time. “Because of my own network someone reached out to me and asked me to do this a couple of years ago. It was a great experience for me, and because of all the positive feedback, I was asked to do it again this year. I love doing it, and it really demonstrates how networking and leadership go hand in hand,” Schorer said. Jessica Snowden, an intelligence policy analyst for AFRICOM, led a workshop on leadership and excellence specifically for the 20 Patch High School students in attendance. Selection to attend the forum was competitive, with students nominated by their teachers. “It’s been very inspiring and is helping me think more about what lies ahead,” said senior Victoria Shealy. Following light refreshments, senior leaders participated in a moderated panel discussion. Rhonda Diaz, AFRICOM’s deputy director of resources; Vivian Turnbull, AFRICOM’s assistant director of Intelligence for Operations Support and Defense Intelligence Agency senior representative; Kathleen Cole, the USAG Stuttgart deputy to the commander; Lt. Col. Michaela Coughlin, an intelligence operations officer from Marine Forces Europe/Africa; and Army Maj. Cassandra Owens, the 52nd Signal Battalion executive officer, shared their perspectives on leadership. “What you did to get where you are may not be
what you need to get to your next position. Seek the environment where you always have to be learning, and remember that it’s important to focus on your successes instead of second guessing yourself,” Turnbull told the audience. The final speech of the day was presented by Terri Kondos, AFRICOM’s National Cryptologic representative, who focused on the progress women have made in the workplace and the challenges that lie ahead, primarily with establishing and maintaining priorities that represent the best balance for what most women value – family, as well as work. The forum concluded with an awards presentation to women in federal service who exemplify leadership. The five winners were selected from more than 30 nominations. Vivian Turnbull received the Legacy Leadership Award. Kelly Sarles, with USAG Stuttgart’s Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation directorate; and Sgt. 1st Class April Smith, with the Defense Information Security Agency Europe, were honored with the Leadership Achievement Award, given to those who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and made an impact in their organization. Recipients of the Emerging Leader Award were Jennifer Smith, also with Family and MWR; and Spc. Patricia Hanson with the Army Medical Command, for their demonstrated leadership potential and commitment to service within the federal government early in their career. To continue its commitment to forum participants, the SEP committee has two upcoming employmentrelated workshops planned. Leading with Confidence, Power and Integrity will be offered April 30 from 9-11 a.m. in Building 2307, Room 217, Patch Barracks. Advance registration is required. The deadline to sign up is April 28. Motorcycle safety: Be ready to ride USAG Stuttgart Safety Office The motorcycle riding season is here. Before getting out on the road, here are a few safety tips motorcyclists should follow: • Do preventive maintenance to ensure your bike is in top mechanical condition. A full tune-up and service is a good place to start.
• Get your riding skills up to par after the winter layoff. • Be visible to other drivers by wearing high-visibility garments. • Wear proper protective clothing such as an approved helmet with eye protection, long-sleeved shirt or jacket, full length trousers, fullfingered gloves and over-the-ankle footwear preferably made of leather with an oil resistant sole to reduce
slipping hazards. • Drive defensively and always adjust your speed for road and traffic conditions. • Don’t drink and drive. • Ride with a great attitude. Riding safely is mostly a matter of knowledge and attitude, and riding safely doesn’t have to be boring. In fact, practicing safe techniques could add years of fun to your life.

U
.S. Africa Command honored the best of the best during the 2013 annual awards ceremony held at Kelley Barracks March 31. The awards ceremony celebrated the outstanding service and achievements of all nominees over the course of the previous fiscal year. Army Gen. David M. Rodriguez, AFRICOM commander, along with Command Sgt. Maj. Darrin Bohn, the senior enlisted leader, Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Steven Hummer, deputy to the cmmander for Military Operations, and Ambassador Phillip Carter, deputy to the commander for Civil-Military Engagement, presented an award certificate and a djembe drum to each award winner. Wikipedia describes a djembe as a ropetuned skin-covered goblet-shaped drum played with bare hands, originally from West Africa. According to the Bamana people in Mali, the name of the djembe comes from the saying “Anke djé, anke bé” which translates to “everyone gather together in peace” and defines the drum’s purpose. The winners also received either a Joint Service Achievement Medal or a Joint Civilian Service Achievement Award, and a time off award.

Car registration about to expire?
Did you know you can renew your vehicle’s registration as soon as you receive notification, usually about 75 days before it expires? Completing the renewal process early does not shorten the registration time; the renewed registration will commence once the old registration expires, but you may be able to avoid a wait during peak periods. Should your vehicle fail the inspection, you normally will have time to correct the deficiency and renew within the renewal window. For more information, visit the U.S. Army Europe Registry of Motor Vehicles website at www.hqusareur.army.mil/rmv.

Early treatment with antibiotics can usually cure the disease, but left untreated, it can cause persistent chronic problems and physical disability. Although considered as a reportable disease in U.S Army medicine, not all European countries enforce mandatory reporting of Lyme disease cases and therefore, exact infection rate may be difficult to determine. For example, in Germany, Lyme disease cases are only reportable in certain states. Tick-borne encephalitis can affect the central nervous system and causes symptoms similar to Lyme disease -headache, fatigue and muscle pain. In the event the virus does affect the central nervous system, paralysis can occur and hospitalization might be required. In the case of tick-borne diseases, the best offense is a good defense. READY, STEADY, GO! SEASON OPENING 2014
Check yourself, your loved ones and pets for ticks after a trek through the outdoors. If you have been bitten, remove the tick carefully as soon as it is discovered by using a pair a tweezers to remove it as close to the skin as possible. Avoid squeezing the tick or removing the head while removing the tick. An effective vaccine for tick-borne encephalitis is available as a series of three shots given over a period of approximately nine to 12 months. The makers of the vaccine have not sought U.S. licensure, so it is not available at military treatment facilities. However, TRICARE beneficiaries with at least nine months remaining in Germany may obtain the vaccine from a host nation facility with a prescription from their primary care manager. Beneficiaries in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg with outdoor occupations or hobbies are particularly encouraged to talk to their primary care manager about the vaccine. Hantavirus is carried by rodents – the Red Bank Vole in Germany – and is usually spread through contact with its urine and excrement. In most cases, people are infected when they stir up dust in areas that are frequented by the rodents and breathe in the dried particles of those droppings. Patients infected with the strain of hantavirus common to Germany may suffer from the abrupt onset of fever and flu-like symptoms, followed by abdominal pain and, in some severe cases, kidney failure. In 2012 nearly 2,800 cases of hantavirus infection were reported across Germany, with the majority reported in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. Preventing hantavirus begins with keeping rodents away from the home, garage or campsite. Cleaning up spilled food to avoid attracting rodents and sealing holes that could allow them into your house or garage are a good start. When spring cleaning in areas that are dusty, such as attics, garages and basements, wet down or wet mop the area first to avoid disturbing any dust that contain dried rodent droppings, and wear a filter mask to avoid breathing in any particles while cleaning. Experts expect the rodent and tick populations may be active sooner at a higher number this year because of the mild winter conditions experience in parts of Europe.

Green Boot encourages units to reduce waste, energy usage By Greg Jones USAG Stuttgart Public Affairs Office
U
.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart is one of several installations that have established a Green Boot program to recognize organizations for taking significant steps to reduce waste and preserve resources. All organizations in USAG Stuttgart can apply to become Green Boot certified, according to Christian Dengel, the energy manager for USAG Stuttgart’s Directorate of Public Works. Typically, an organization can obtain a checklist from DPW to begin implementing changes required to meet the Green Boot standards. “We know that not every organization can do the exact same thing, so the checklist can be individualized,” Dengel said. He also explained that the checklist offers several practices to choose from, instead of a single requirement that all organizations must meet. The program intends for organizations to promote better practices to conserve energy and minimize any impact on the environment. According to Dengel, most of the practices outlined are standard practices. “Mostly these are things people should be doing anyway; properly separating trash, turning off computers and other equipment when possible,” he said. “Green Boot just recognizes those organizations that are doing all that they can to conserve energy and reduce their impact on the environment.” Capt. Felix Castro, commander of USAG Stuttgart’s Headquarters and Headquarters Company, recently led his unit through the Green Boot certification process. “A lot of the policies that applied to the Green Boot program were already in place,” Castro said. “Really, the certification process was more of an azimuth check to ensure we were going in the right direction, organizationally speaking.” To date, USAG Stuttgart HHC, the Defense Information Systems Agency Europe, and USAG Stuttgart DPW have all been
Green Boot certified. Certified organizations are recognized by the garrison commander with a certificate, usually presented during the garrison’s quarterly environmental meeting. According to Castro, the real rewards to participating are intrinsic. “With the new fiscal reality that the Department of Defense finds itself in, that stewardship of resources will be of paramount importance,” Castro said. “Also in terms of taking care of the environment, it is the right thing to do. I figured getting ahead of the curve in getting this certification would help the company as a whole down the road.” Elements of the 405th Army Field Support Brigade, and the Stuttgart Golf Course are currently going through the certification process.

For more information about the Green Boot program, contact Christian Dengel at 421-6253/civ. 0711-7228-6253. A Green Boot organization not only conserves energy and minimizes the impact on the environment, but also sets a positive example for its employees, service and family members, and the entire military community. By assuming a leadership and stewardship role, Green Boots will: • Promote recycling and reduce solid waste disposal. • Practice energy and water conservation measures. • Purchase products that are less harmful to human health and the environment. • Help improve water quality in the creeks, rivers and lakes of the community. • Help improve indoor and outdoor air quality. • Educate personnel, service members, family members and other Installation agencies about green business practices.

Enjoy nature, unwind during Schwäbisch Gmünd’s garden show Story by Carola Meusel USAG Stuttgart Public Affairs Office
F
or all those seeking to unwind from the everyday stresses by spending time out in nature, the “Landesgartenschau,” or state garden show, in Schwäbisch Gmünd, 50 kilometers east of Stuttgart, might be worth the trip. The Landesgartenschau runs from April 30 until Oct. 12 and includes three themed areas: a landscape park called “Himmelsgarten” (heaven’s garden), an adventure forest “Himmelsleiter” (ladder to the sky) and nature within the city in Schwäbisch Gmünd’s downtown area, called “Erdenreich” (earth’s treasure). Show gardens, flower and plant exhibitions, landscape gardening and design, and floral design workshops are also an essential part of the Landesgartenschau. According to Markus Brenner, spokesman for the state garden show, all three areas aim for visitors to feel, experience and connect with nature. “The purpose of the garden show is to present nature and landscape in a new setting and to improve the city’s overall appearance. The Landesgartenschau will give our city a new face,” Brenner said. “Most of the displays and newly built park and garden areas will remain past the event.” ‘Himmelsgarten’ landscape park Brenner recommends visitors start their journey at the landscape park (Himmelsgarten) located atop the “Wetzgau” plateau, where they can enjoy a bird’s-eyeview of the city from the “Himmelsstürmer” lookout tower, which was built exclusively for the event. “Beside the view, mirrors were installed outside the wooden tower to reflect the sky and the sun, making for a spectacular play of lights,” Brenner said. The “Landesgartenschau,” or state garden show, in Schwäbisch Gmünd will run from April 30 to Oct. 12 throughout a landscape park, an adventure forest, and Schwäbisch Gmünd’s downtown area. Besides outdoor activities, show gardens and various flower exhibitions, visitors can also tour historic landmarks such as the Johannes Cathedral that was built during the reign of the Staufer dynasty between 1220 and 1250 and is one of Swabia’s most prominent buildings of the late Romanesque era. arrangements can also be found at the landscape park. “The show gardens simply are impressive and dazzling to look at,” Brenner said. Those interested in outdoor activities may enjoy a run through the hemp labyrinth, or spending time at the water playground next to a natural pool. Following these activities, patrons can rest on sundecks and various meadows and woodlands throughout the landscape park. ‘Himmelsleiter’ adventure forest The Taubental Forest (Himmelsleiter) will offer more than 30 activities for the entire family. Children, for example, can search for wooden animals, learn about various trees and nature on the “Naturatum” adventure path, or roll wooden balls along a 300-meter ball path. The “Erholungswald,” or recreational forest, will feature a “path of life” for visitors to focus on their inner self and to increase their well-being and energy in a natural setting. The path will be framed by sculptures and accessible art installations, illustrating bible verses and literature quotes, according to Brenner. ‘Erdenreich’ nature in the city The Erdenreich will feature nature in the city and will present Schwäbisch Gmünd’s historic heritage in a new setting. Schwäbisch Gmünd is considered the oldest Staufer city in Southern Germany. The Swabian Staufer dynasty, also referred to as the House of Hohenstaufen, was a dynasty of German monarchs that reigned between the 11th and 13th centuries. History buffs may enjoy various landmarks throughout Schwäbisch Gmünd, such as the Johannes Cathedral, built between 1220 and 1250, and one of Swabia’s most prominent buildings of the late Romanesque era. The “Fünfknopfturm” Tower, a former watchtower built between the 12th and 13th centuries, can also be toured. The Heilig-KreuzMünster Cathedral is one of the oldest gothic hall churches in Southern Germany and was built between 1315 and 1521.
During the Landesgartenschau, the historic downtown area will feature green hideaways, alleys, colorful flower displays and a boardwalk along the Josefsbach Stream and Rems River. According to Brenner, visitors can stroll along the boardwalk, sit ashore the “Remsstrand” beach, or linger in the sun on terraces located next to the water. The city park was also enlarged exclusively for the garden show and is now called “Remspark.” Here, visitors can also visit a small rococo-style castle built in 1780. “The downtown area is the perfect place for people to relax and breathe in history,” Brenner said. At the “Blumenhalle,” or flower hall, located at the Congress Centrum at the Remspark city park, visitors will find flower displays and ever-changing flower exhibitions stretching across a 600-square-foot area. Soccer, basketball and indoor climbing will also be offered at Schwäbisch Gmünd’s former train depot. Overall, the Landesgartenschau aims to offer events and activities revolving around nature, as well as relaxation and a good time for all age groups, according to Brenner. The Landesgartenschau will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tickets cost €16. Family tickets cost between €20 and €36. Tickets can be purchased at Schwäbisch Gmünd’s i-Punkt Tourist Information or online at www.shop.schwaebisch-gmuend.de. Shuttle buses will depart every 15 minutes to and from the landscape park, forest and the downtown area. All areas can also be reached by foot.. Special events and entertainment will also be offered throughout the Landesgartenschau. For more, visit www. http://www.schwaebisch-gmuend.de/6873Veranstaltungskalender_kopie.html. Ultimately, the decision went to Krlin, who also took the “Best Boxer” award for the evening. In bout 12, Giuseppe Masutto with Fit Boxing Esslingen secured his team’s second place spot by defeating Clinton Kendall of Stuttgart. In the only ten-count knock out of the evening, Corey Taylor of Hohenfels earned enthusiastic cheers from the crowd, defeating Stuttgart’s Xavier Martin in bout 13. In what may have been the most crowd-pleasing bout
of the evening, Vicenza’s William Runson defeated Tyler Mielearch of Baumholder in bout 14, but not without some real effort. “That guy weighs about 260 pounds, and believe me, I felt every bit of it,” Runson said after his bout. “I’d land a punch, and it wouldn’t move him at all. I won, but it sure tired me out!” In the final bout, Julian Wiggins of Stuttgart defeated teammate James Freund. For the boxers, it wasn’t necessarily about losing or winning the tournament, but about the experience and building resilience, according to Wiggins. “Boxing, along with other individual combat sports, helps test your intestinal fortitude and builds confidence to overcome your fears,” he said. “Anybody can watch from the bleachers and talk about how the boxers are fighting, but not everybody can get in the ring in front of a crowd of people and fight.”

Martha’s
Located in the Altstadt by the beautiful Schlossplatz Königsbau, Martha’s is easy to find and offers a variety of culinary delights. Look for the Starbucks and head into the passage. On the left, you will find Martha’s, a cute little imbiss with the big flavor. It will most likely be filled to the brim with satisfied customers. The owner is Pia Nowotny. She named the place after her grandmother who taught her how to cook and she has certainly learned a thing or two! Along with her friendly and helpful staff, she is eager to please and takes pride in all that Martha’s has to offer. Everything served at Martha’s is all natural with no preservatives. The meats for her wurst, burgers and pastrami sandwiches are all from the region. Her curry wurst has a homemade curry sauce that has people happily standing in line for their order. You will also find freshly baked breads, homemade flammkuchen with fresh cream, local ham and onion. And if you can fit a little more at the end of your meal, the Belgians waffles are made fresh daily with a variety of irresistible toppings. BEMS has a new club — the Marathon Club. The exercise and running club is for students in grades K-5. The club meets every Wednesday right after school for a period of 10 weeks. The goal for the runners is to accumulate the distance of a half or full marathon. And it's not just for kids! Parents are invited to join with their student and make it a family outing. Those meeting the challenge, will earn a special certificate that will give proof of their hard work. Students are also encouraged to keep a logbook at home, and to add more miles when possible from sports or other family outings. Nina Hazelton

There is more to art than drawing and painting. In this photo we see Heather Landry and Isabella Grizales working on their art project. They are making use of their artistic sense of size and proportion in constructing wire animal sculptures. The MS Art Club meets every Monday right after school. The students explore many different art styles and build on different techniques such as drawing, painting and sculpting. If you're interest in putting your artistic talents to work, please contact Ms. Nina Hazelton, the BEMS MS Art Club Sponsor. Nina Hazelton

Have fun with the locals Crazy Hair Day
During the BEMS Spirit Week, one of the days was devoted to "crazy hair." Almost anything was a "go" for this special day. We had colorful hair, hair with balloons, hair with twist and curls. Big smiles, good friends, ribbons and bows just naturally go together to make a great photo as Caden Bass (from left), Liina Winborn, Sarah Brown and Ellie Baker prove. Just like these young ladies, everybody had a great "crazy hair" day and can hardly wait until next year's Spirit Week.
