CARE Fair eases culture shock USAG Stuttgart Public Affairs Office

Adjusting to an overseas assignment isn’t always easy. There is so much to learn: a new language, new customs, and if that weren’t enough, you’ve got to figure out how to negotiate daily life in a new military community. In U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart, that means dealing with facilities spread across four installations. And woe to those who aren’t familiar with the Army. That’s where U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart’s 2015 Community Activities, Registration and Education, or CARE, Fair comes in. Newcomers to the Stuttgart military community can begin to overcome their “culture shock” and learn about the myriad of community resources that can help ease the transition during the CARE Fair on Aug. 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Exchange shopping center on Panzer Kaserne. Representatives from more than 50 installation directorates, service organizations and special interest groups will be on hand. In a single location, community members can sign up their children for Scouting programs, the Sitzmarkers Ski and Snowboard Club and the Piranhas swim team. Other groups, such as the Stuttgart Community Spouses Club, Mothers of Preschoolers, and Women, Infants and Children Overseas will also participate. “The annual CARE Fair is our community’s most comprehensive offering of everything and everyone in one location. It will help community members — especially newcomers — prepare their game plans for a successful and resilient European tour of duty. Newcomers will be overwhelmed with the vast opportunities and services presented at the CARE Fair,” said Dan Adams, the USAG Stuttgart Relocation Readiness Program manager. Visitors to the fair will be able to learn about employment, volunteer and educational opportunities, religious services, and leisure and recreation activities. Special emphasis is put on resiliency building programs for people of all ages. In addition, newcomers may discover some needed household items at the Family and MWR-hosted flea market that will be held during the same time period on the sidewalk outside of the Exchange.

‘Time travel’ through automobile history at Mercedes-Benz Museum Story & photos by Carola Meusel USAG Stuttgart Public Affairs Office

Stuttgart is well known for its automobile industry, especially Mercedes-Benz. People interested in taking a closer look at the “car with the star” from Janis Joplin’s 1970 hit can visit the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt. The museum boasts 125 years of automobile history, with 160 vehicles and 1,500 exhibits displayed throughout nine floors. According to a Mercedes-Benz Museum press release, the museum’s interior design follows the structure of a DNA double helix representing the Mercedes-Benz vision of continuously inventing new and advanced products. The helix also divides the exhibition into two tours: “Mythosräume,” or legend rooms, and “Collectionsräume,” or collection rooms. The legend rooms visualize the development of the Mercedes-Benz brand by taking visitors back in time to 1886 and forward to today’s innovations, such as emission-free mobility. The collection rooms feature the diversity of Mercedes-Benz vehicles and their use in everyday life. Visitors can always switch between the two tours. When arriving at the museum, visitors are typically impressed with the futuristic interior design, according to Anselm Vogt-Moykopf, a museum tour guide. “The exhibition areas are all open, but connected via ramps. Throughout the museum, visitors will not find one closed room or linear wall,” he added. Bullet-shaped elevators take visitors to the upper floor of the museum. According to Vogt-Moykopf, the elevator ride can be considered as a preview, preparing visitors for the exhibitions. During the ride, patrons can look out the window to see the various exhibition areas while engine sounds inside and projected videos on the outside walls make for a unique experience. Exiting the elevator, people find themselves in the year 1886. Here, they’re introduced to the very beginning of the brand: the “Grandfather Clock,” or “Standuhr” engine, a singlecylinder engine developed by engineers Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach, and Daimler’s motorized carriage, the world’s first four-wheeled motorized vehicle with a gas engine. The “Patent Motorwagen Nummer 1,” or Benz Patent Motor Car, designed

by engineer Carl Benz, known as the world’s first three-wheeled automobile with a combustion engine, is also displayed. Following the legend rooms tour, seven exhibition areas guide visitors from the invention of the automobile to the history of the Mercedes-Benz brand while overlapping political and historical events, such as World War I and II. According to Vogt-Moykopf, the cars are always located in the center of the room to mark the focal point of attention. “Everything in the museum revolves around the vehicles. The cars are highlighted — almost like on a theater stage,” Vogt-Moykopf said. The oldest Mercedes from 1902, the Mercedes Simplex, for example, is positioned underneath Swarovski crystal lights while classical music plays in the background. “This setting is a very elegant presentation of the car,” Vogt-Moykopf said. Visitors can look at the vehicles displayed on the right and on the left, photos, sketches and memorabilia chronologically illustrate the development of the brand into its contemporary context. The exhibits also are embedded in the museum’s architecture. Granite floors cast impressive reflections of the vehicles, according to Vogt-Moykopf. Many rooms even feature materials used for car manufacturing, such as brass walls, the most important material for producing engines. Another architectural tweak is that the museum is located next to the B14 federal highway. “Since the cars are exhibits and therefore static, the highway is meant to bring the dynamic of driving back into the museum,” Vogt-Moykopf said. The tour of the collection rooms features different themes to illustrate the use of Mercedes-Benz vehicles in everyday situations, such as waste management, technical and transportation support. Themes range from travel by bus or cab, to passenger cars and transportation of cargo. At the Gallery of Helpers, emergency vehicles are displayed. The Gallery of Celebrities features vehicles driven by people such as Princess Diana and Ringo Starr, or featured in movies, such as the ML 320 Jeep in “Jurassic Park.” The legend and collection tours unite at the Silver Arrows-Races and Records exhibition.

Here, racing cars are displayed and visitors can get a feel for the fast and furious world of motor sports with two simulators. The famous Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrows are also displayed, and video monitors showcase historic motor races. The Fascination of Technology exhibit marks the end of the tour, and gives visitors a glimpse into the future with displays of new technical innovations. According to Vogt-Moykopf, the Mercedes-Benz Museum offers something for everyone, whether car enthusiasts, architecture or history buffs. And at the end of their museum day, some people may say: “Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes-Benz.” The Mercedes Benz Museum is located at Mercedestrasse 100, 70372 Stuttgart.

The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Children 14 years or younger have free entrance. English guided tours are offered Tuesday to Sunday at 11 a.m. The museum also offers handson activities for children and children’s tours. The museum also boasts a restaurant offering fine regional meals and, every second Sunday of the month, brunch. Summer in Stuttgart has been a real scorcher this year consisting of multi-day heat waves and mercury readings climbing towards 99 degrees. During the seasonal peak where we’re reminded most of conserving our most precious natural resources, for the Stuttgart Golf Course, a sophisticated water management plan is keeping their “greens” green while at the same time making golf more sustainable. “Although you can hardly tell [from the golf course], we’ve had lousy weather this season because there’s been no rain,” said Ed McCargo, golf course marshal. “But we have a great, hardworking crew, and as far as the work that has been done, this is one of the best courses around.” Located in Kornwestheim, the course stretches across 7,000 yards over 300 acres. In an industry with a reputation for its heavy water use, the Stuttgart Golf Course staff puts water conservation into daily practice. Through strategic watering methods as well as innovative irrigation scheduling and monitoring technology, the golf course is making their process more precise and efficient. “We want to do what we can to make sure we’re using water smartly and not just watering for the sake of watering,” said Chris Konik, golf course superintendent. “Even though the environment

dictates how much [water] you’ll have to put down, you can look at yourself to make sure you’re not doing it carelessly and that you have a plan.” Under the recent weather conditions, Konik said he and his staff have taken extra care to focus watering only where necessary, including the three main areas of play: tee boxes, fairways and greens. All of the roughs and external areas have been left in their natural state. A digital program monitors course conditions as well as controls the irrigation system. By recording current weather conditions in combination with its own recent watering activity, the program can precisely determine how much water the course needs on an hourly basis. Many readers of this article may remember the final episodes of a very famous sitcom, where the main characters were arrested and imprisoned for standing by and watching while someone was being mugged. Well, the law in Germany is not very different from the final episode of that television show. The German “Good Samaritan law” can be summed up as follows; whoever does not render assistance during accidents or a common danger or emergency when aid is necessary and could be expected is guilty of a crime, and that person can be imprisoned for up to a year and fined. The penalties are heftier if

you are the cause of or even just one of the people involved in the accident or emergency. Usually, you do not have to worry about being held liable for the aid that you give, even if it makes the person worse off. But you should limit the aid that you do give to only those things that you are trained and equipped to do. Essentially, this means that a medic and a layperson are not expected to give the same level of assistance and if you have only ever seen something on television then you probably shouldn’t attempt it on the A8.

a smartphone application. “I can set the times, the individual sprinkler heads, I can make them do a 360-degree turn, or make them spray a certain area,” said Konik. “Decades ago, you’d have to take a truck, drag the hoses out there, and connect them to faucets around each hole. Now things are a lot more automated and efficient.” Another daily device used to pinpoint specific areas needing some extra attention during dry spells is a wireless probe that reads the moisture content, temperature and salinity of the soil. The analysis can provide whether or not the area should be watered if too dry or aerated if too wet, to prevent disease. In some cases, the crew may decide to use an aerator that injects highly

pressurized water through the turf, effectively watering through its compacted layers while also improving needed air circulation for healthy grass. Other water saving efforts involve cutting back the amount of mowing to reduce stress on the turf, installing aerated faucets throughout the course and club, and selecting tolerant grasses during a complete course renovation in 2011. Their efforts haven’t gone unnoticed as the Stuttgart Golf Course became Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary certified in 2007 and a Green Boot certified organization in 2014 for their environmental stewardship. In addition to water conservation, the golf course practices other ecological initiatives in wildlife and habitat management, chemical and pesticide safety, environmental planning, as well as several education and outreach programs. While course conditions are constantly changing, presenting new everyday challenges for him and his staff, Konik said conserving resources now will preserve the sport in the future. “You can’t put something on a cycle and say this is what we’re going to do. It doesn’t work like that because this is a living, breathing environment,” said Konik. “You just have to water smartly, and by doing that, we’re providing a service to our soldiers and protecting our investment for the future of golf.”

A memorial service to honor the 60th anniversary of the Aug. 11, 1955, plane crash involving 66 American

soldiers is scheduled to take place on Sunday, Aug. 16 from 2-4 p.m. in Edelweiler, Germany. The memorial ceremony is open to all military and local community members who wish to attend. The district mayors and members of the German communities of Edelweiler and Groembach, as well as members of the U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart are expected to attend the wreath laying at the memorial site. The 1955 plane crash was the worst disaster to happen to the U.S. military in Germany after the Second World War. The local townspeople faithfully remember the fallen American soldiers,

The Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training workshop is scheduled on Aug. 25-26 at the Panzer Chapel and Sept. 15-16 at the Religious Education Center on Patch Barracks from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Open to all E-4 or GS-05 and above as well as Family Readiness Group (FRG) leaders. There is no charge to attend the workshop, completion requires a two-day commitment. Comfortable civilian attire is encouraged. The ASIST workshop is a highly interactive, practical, practice-oriented workshop for those who want to feel more comfortable, confident and competent in helping to prevent the immediate risk of suicide. With a large number of personnel traveling during summer break and permanent change of station season, service members, civilians and family members are reminded to exercise vigilance and sound risk-based decision-making. When traveling, make sure to monitor local conditions and ensure travel plans do not place you or your family in high-risk situations. The Department of State has several valuable resources to keep you informed of conditions abroad that may affect your safety and security. The Department of State issues travel warnings to describe long-term, protracted conditions that make a country dangerous or unstable. It also issues travel warnings when the U.S. government's ability to assist American citizens is constrained due to the closure of an embassy or consulate, or because of a breakdown of the consular staff. It issues travel alerts for short-term events that you should know about

when planning travel to a country. Examples include an election season that is bound to have many strikes, demonstrations, or disturbances; a health alert like an outbreak of H1N1; or evidence of an elevated risk of terrorist attacks. When these short-term events are over, the DOS cancels the travel alert. Another good resource is the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program a free service to allow U.S. citizens and nationals traveling abroad to enroll their trip with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Enrolling means you will receive updated text message information about areas abroad and makes it easier for a U.S. Embassy or Consulate to contact you or your designated contact in case of emergency. You can also find information on embassies and consulates, country descriptions, visa

require-ments, safety and security concerns, health, transportation, and important local laws that you should be aware of.

If you're an Office of Personnel Management data breach victim, you probably know to look out for identity theft. But what about imposter scams? In the latest twist, imposters are pretending to be the FTC offering money to OPM data

breach victims. Here’s how it works: A man calls and says he’s from the FTC and has money for you because you were an OPM data breach victim. All you need to do is give him some information. Stop. Don’t tell him anything. He’s not from the FTC. One fake name the caller used was Dave Johnson, with the FTC in

Las Vegas, Nevada. There’s not even an FTC office in Las Vegas. The FTC won’t be calling to ask for your personal information. We won’t be giving money to OPM data breach victims either. That’s just one example of the type of scam you might see. You may get a different call or email. Here are some tips for recognizing and preventing government imposter

scams and other phishing scams: Don’t give personal information. Don’t provide any personal or financial information unless you’ve initiated the call and it’s to a phone number you know to be correct. Never provide financial information by email. Don’t wire money. The government won’t ask you to wire money or put it on a prepaid debit card. Also, the government won’t ask you to pay money to claim a grant, prize or refund. Don’t trust caller ID. Scammers can spoof their numbers so it looks like they are calling from a government agency, even when they are not. Federal agencies will not call to tell you they are giving you money. If you’ve received a call or email that you think is fake, report it to the FTC at www.ftc.gov. If it’s an email that relates to the OPM breach, you also can forward it to US-CERT at phishing-report@us-cert.gov. If you gave your personal information to an imposter, it’s time to change those compromised passwords, account numbers or security questions. Concerned about identity theft? From student to staffer – AFRICOM starts intern program Program accepts applications year-round By SSG Christopher C. Klutts United States Africa Command

As the summer comes to an end, so too does the tour of duty for the command's first cohort of college interns. For nearly two months, five interns worked throughout U.S. Africa Command in areas that best matched their interests and academic backgrounds. Students filled unpaid positions with the commander's action group, the strategy directorate, the command surgeon’s office, facilities management and with the U.S. Agency for International Development adviser to the commander. According to Brian Bento, branch chief of personnel security with AFRICOM and intern program manager, the first group of interns provided roughly 1,080 combined hours over seven weeks. He described the program as an opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience working in government while also earning a secret security clearance. Marie Goetzke, a history major at Princeton University, found herself directly contributing to the command’s mission, something she said is not the norm when interning with other organizations. “In a lot of internships you’re stuck with the shredding or the very menial labor tasks. I think actually getting to work on something that mattered on a much larger scale, it was really incredible,” Goetzke said. The CAG is responsible for preparing Gen. David M. Rodriguez, AFRICOM commander, for speaking engagements and meetings.

Goetzke helped the group draft the commander’s keynote address for the Africa Logistics Forum in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She also played a key role in preparing the commander for LiveAtState, a webcasted media event led by the U.S. Department of State. “We don’t consider Marie an intern. She is a fullfledged CAG team member,” said Albert Guerrero, acting deputy director of the CAG. “She exceeded all our expectations in this fastpaced work environment.” Goetzke encouraged students looking for internship opportunities to consider interning with AFRICOM. “Definitely apply. Once you’re here, throw yourself all the way into it. Try and get involved in as many different tasks as you can, to really see what working in the government is like,” she said. With three more interns already lined up to participate, the command is now accepting applications year-round.

Safety Corner: Practice safe social networking Provided by Interagency OPSEC Support Staff

Social networking sites (SNSs), like Facebook® and Twitter®, are great ways to connect with people, share information, and market products and services. However, these sites can also provide adversaries, such as terrorists, spies and criminals, with the critical information they need to disrupt your mission and harm you, your co-workers, or even your family members. The more information adversaries can obtain, the more opportunities they have to cause damage at your expense. Practicing good operations security will minimize the risks that come from participating in SNSs, and help you to recognize and protect your critical information.

Critical Information Your critical information is any information that you or your mission manager considers sensitive. Here are some examples: • Names and photos of you, your family and co-workers; • Usernames, passwords, computer and net working information; • Job title, location, salary, grade, clear ances; • Operational, security, and logistical data;

• Mission capabilities or limitations; • Schedules and travel itineraries; • Social Security numbers, credit card, and banking information; • Work or personal addresses and phone numbers; and, • Interests, hobbies, likes, and dislikes.

Countermeasures Follow computer security guidelines: Adversaries prefer to go after easy targets. Keep your computer security up-to-date and make yourself a hard target. Never login from risky locations: Public SNSs generally do NOT have secure login available (HTTPS with the lock icon). If you login from a hotel, cyber-café, or airport hotspot, particularly ones in foreign countries, your name and password can be captured at any time. Keep your password secure: Use different, strong passwords for each online account. Never give your password away. Modify your search profile: Do a search for yourself and if too much data comes up, go to your settings and restrict your search profile. Don’t depend on the SNS for confidentiality: Even SNSs that aren’t open and public by design can become so due to hacking, security errors, poor data management practices, and data brokering. In a unique, first-time collaboration the Defense Health Agency, through its “Operation Live Well” initiative, is teaming with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Tobacco Products to promote “The Real Cost” — a public education campaign highlighting the true cost of tobacco use. “We are thrilled about this collaboration with the FDA to help us educate our service members about the monetary and health costs associated with tobacco use,” said Public Health Service Capt. Kimberly Elenberg, program manager for the DHA’s population health program. “This joint effort is a direct result of our participation in the National Prevention Strategy Council, a coalition of 20 federal departments, agencies and offices.” Two public service announcements, produced by FDA, are being shared with more than 100 installation movie theaters around the world in support of Operation Live Well. OLW is the DoD’s long-term strategy to make the healthy choice become the easy choice. The joint collaboration represents the first time FDA has partnered with DoD to reduce tobacco use.

Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of disease, disability and death in the United States, contributing to more than 480,000 deaths each year. According to the 2011 Department of Defense Health Related Behaviors Survey of Active Duty Military Personnel, service members smoke at a higher rate (24 percent) than their civilian counterparts (18 percent) and service members who identify as heavy smokers often began smoking at 14 years old or younger. “‘The Real Cost’ educates viewers about the dangers of tobacco use by making them fully aware of the real cost of every cigarette using new portrayals of the health and addiction risks associated with tobacco use,” said Kathy Crosby, director of the Ofﬁce of Health Communication and Education at the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products. “By partnering with the Defense Health Agency, we are now able to help military service members and their families live healthier lives by encouraging them to rethink their relationship with tobacco.” The ads focus on consequences of tobacco use such as loss of control due to addiction, cosmetic health effects and the toxic mix of more than 7,000 chemicals in every cigarette. The ads will run through March 2016.

Group “friends” (e.g., real life, coworkers, strangers, etc.) and control access permissions based on the groups. A U.S. Government official on sensitive travel to Iraq created a security risk for himself and others by tweeting® his location and activities every few hours. • A family on vacation kept friends up-todate via online profiles; their home was

burglarized while they were away. • New computer viruses and trojans that successfully target information on SNSs are on the rise. • Some foreign investors, including government and commercial entities known to be involved with organized criminal activity, own large stakes in certain SNSs. • Information in SNS profiles has led to people losing job offers, getting fired, and even being arrested. • SNSs have become a haven for identity thieves and con artists trying to use your information against you. • Several kidnapping, rape and murder cases were linked to SNSs where the victims first connected with their attackers. • Over 90,000 registered sex offenders were removed from one popular SNS… and those were the ones who used their real names. • According to the Al Qaeda Handbook, terrorists search online for data about “Government personnel, officers, important personalities, and all matters related to them (residence, work place, times of leaving and returning, and children, places visited).” Be Smart...Be Safe...Practice Good OPSEC! www.ioss.gov

Last but certainly not least is the Bertha Benz Memorial Route. If you’re a car enthusiast, there is not a more fitting roadway than this one. Wife of Karl Benz — founder of German automaker Mercedes Benz — this route was named after her revolutionary long distance road trip in 1888 when she took her two sons and her husband’s Model 3 prototype to travel from Mannheim to Pforzheim to visit her mother. The 194-kilometer course was named the world’s first long distance road trip and was approved in 2008 as an official scenic route. As one of the most prominent monuments of the German industrial legacy, the car trail follows the same route Bertha Benz originally used, both with a separate northbound and a southbound route due to her unease of the mountain terrain she drove on the way back. On the road, you’ll catch a glimpse of history at sites such as Ladenburg, where Karl Benz lived from 1906 until he passed in 1929 as well as the world’s first petrol station in Wiesloch. But aside from its historic importance, it also leads through the countryside of Baden, one of the most charming regions in Germany. Points of interest: Mannheim Palace, Luisenpark of Mannheim, Ladenburg Auto Museum, House of the Benz Family, The World’s First Petrol Station in Wiesloch (Town Pharmacy), Hockenheim Museum of Motorsports.
