Eagles bring home gold in world tournament

After a weekend packed with tough competition, buzzer beaters, and standing-room-only crowds, the Stuttgart Eagles U-12 boys basketball team considers taking home the firstplace gold medal at the 2015 United World Games their crowning moment of the season.

“I was nervous because we would be playing some hard teams and really competitive teams,” said Ashton Muse, 11, shooting guard for the Eagles. “I was happy and excited coming back to Germany being the team to win the United World Games.”

Eleven Stuttgart Eagles U-12 players, ranging from ages 10 to 12, traveled to compete in this year’s United World Games hosted in Klagenfurt, Austria. The UWG connects over a thousand young athletes, from more than 30 countries, bringing them together through a shared passion for sports. From June 18 to 21, teams played in an Olympic-style tournament including competitions in basketball, soccer, volleyball, handball, and rugby.

Hungary, all shooting for a chance to stand on the winners podium in the Wörthersee stadium—known as a platform for the European Soccer Championships in 2008.

“In this tournament, every game was a close game, but the kids always pushed through,” said Head Coach Avery Muse Sr. “It’s one thing to win by a blowout but it’s another to push through adversity and come

out on top.”

The Eagles advanced from the group round with a record of 3-0 and defeated Hungary 36-26 in the quarterfinals. However, the most anticipated game of the tournament was not for first place, but instead against another US team from Rammstein in the semi-finals.

It’s not every day that Elmo, Cookie Monster and their friends visit the Stuttgart military community.

U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart hosted the Sesame Street/USO Experience for Military Families with two shows created specifically for military children June 26 at the Patch Fitness Center.

Families with young children gathered to watch Sesame Street characters perform in “Sesame Street/USO Experience for Military Families: Moving Day.” Strollers filled the Patch Fitness Center parking lot, and the gymnasium was full of spinning Elmo toys as children waited for the real one to appear.

Sesame Street and the USO know that when one family member serves, the whole family serves. The character Katie was added to the cast to model real-life experiences of today’s military children. Families are taken on a journey with Katie and all of her Sesame Street friends in hopes of

helping them understand and relate to changes that occur regularly in military life. The show originally began as a workshop called Elmo’s Dad is Deployed, it has evolved into a full live traveling performance.

“It is important for the kids to see a military kid just like them.” said Nicole McClendon, USO Tour Manager. “We bring the show to

families on base to let them know we are here for them. The show is for them and about them.”

“Katie is Moving to a New Base,” deals with a military child who is sad because she must move to a new location. Her friends help her see the upsides to relocating to a new base.

Health Beat: Healthy Grilling

July, and Independence Day mark the start of the barbecue season for many.

Before you fire up the grill this year, consider what options you might have to make it a healthy, as well as satisfying fun experience.

According to the dietary guidelines for Americans 2010, a healthful diet should include fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat or fat free dairy products. It should also contain lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts. The guidelines also suggest limiting saturated fats, trans-fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium), and added sugar. All these should also be done in conjunction with ensuring that

one does not exceed their recommended caloric intake. Healthy eating practices should be included as part of our plan to stay ready and resilient. The Performance Triad recognizes that proper nutrition is an integral part of ensuring that our entire community enjoy a great quality of life.

Having a healthy meal and a delicious meal are not mutually exclusive. Healthy cooking techniques such as grilling, can capture the flavor of foods without adding extra calories. According to a Botsford registered dietician, the high heat from the grill preserves the foods moisture thereby keeping it tender. This eliminates the need to add oil or butter during cooking, and makes you less reliant on sauces or other condiments to enhance flavor.

To ensure that the meat is cooked thor-

oughly, baking meat covered in the oven before cooking on the grill, may assure food is cooked to a safe temperature. This suggestion is however not necessary to achieve the specified internal temperature, especially for the seasoned griller or outdoor chef. These methods are great ways to reduce the fat content of meals without sacrificing taste as well as food safety.

The high heat from grilling also causes excess fat on meats to drip off, thereby lowering the fat content of the meat itself.

It is important to remember, though, that the addition of sour cream, butter, sauces and toppings add fat and calories to the meal and should be used sparingly or in moderation so as to not counteract the benefits of this cooking practice. Certain

cuts and types of meat are also higher in fat than others. During the summer, the Centers for Disease Control recommends the use of leaner options such as skinless chicken or turkey, fish and lean pork most often. Using the breast is also a lower fat option than dark meats such as the thigh or leg. For the 4th of July, try to cut back on the fats in some of the aforementioned ways, if you choose to enjoy ribs, steaks, brats and hamburgers. When making condiments and sauces, utilize some of the great European options available by making low fat/non-fat yogurt dressings instead of mayonnaise based sauces and dressings as an example.

Healthy eating also encompasses eating a variety of foods from the different food groups. Fruit and vegetables can be prepared on the grill as well as being part of meals as a side dish. Vegetable and fruit Kebabs are a fun way of incorporating these foods on the grill. When they are grilled, they tend to also retain more of the vitamins and minerals they contain. Buying the fruits and vegetables that are in season, also ensures that your friends and family are getting the freshest produce at better prices. Be creative and research ways to incorporate some of the fruits and vegetables here in Germany that may not be familiar. They may be well worth the experiment! Variety is the spice of life so enjoy the different foods that can be part of any summer celebrations. Remember to eat in moderation and always practice safety when cooking outdoors on the grill.

Safety Corner: Barbecue Grill Safety

According to the Barbecue Industry Association, 66 million Americans cook outdoors regularly. Hopefully you will not be one of the people treated in emergency rooms this summer for injuries related to charcoal, propane and wood-burning grills.

Outdoor cooking injuries can be avoided by observing the following safety precautions.

Before cooking • Instruct children on the dangers of a lit grill.

• Choose a safe grilling location away from children’s play areas and areas of heavy traffic. The area should be well-ventilated to avoid danger from carbon monoxide and other combustion by-products.

• Never grill inside or even in a semienclosed area, such as a tent or camper.

Always grill on a flat, stable platform.

• Do not wear clothing that could contact the fire, such as hanging shirttails or dangling strings.

• Never leave a grill unattended.

Cooking with propane (LP) gas grills • Read the owner’s manual and operating instructions carefully.

• Use the exact type of tank and fuel specified.

• Check hoses and valve connections often by pouring soapy water on the connection points. If bubbles appear, retighten the connections and test again.

• Transfer and store liquid propane cylinders in an upright position and never where temperatures can reach 125 degrees.

• Whether using a grill lit by a match or pushbutton igniter, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Cooking with charcoal grills • Never start a fire with gasoline.

• If using an electric fire starter, use an insulated indoor/outdoor cord plugged into an outlet protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter.

• Be sure the ground is dry and do not stand in water when plugging the starter into an outlet.

• The starter will stay hot for several minutes after use, so place it out of the reach of children and on a surface that will not burn.

• If using instant-light briquettes: Spread instant-light briquettes into a single layer, making sure they touch at the edges. Light several of them at their edges with a match.

• If using standard charcoal briquettes: Stack standard briquettes in a pyramid to allow air to circulate around them, causing them to light faster. Apply lighter fluid before light-

ing; wait at least 1 minute before lighting to allow the lighter fluid to soak in. Never add fluid to the coals once they’ve been lit.

Flare-Ups: Fat from your meat will drip onto the fire. The fire ignites the fat, causing flare-ups. The following tips can help prevent flare-ups.

• Grill low-fat meat.

• Trim excess fat from your meat.

• Place a drip pan beneath the meat to catch fat before it hits the coals.

• Don’t place meat directly over the heat source.

• Keep the grill cover closed and adjust vents as necessary.

new aPPointment system for Pov insPeCtions On June 25 the Stuttgart Privately Owned Vehicle Inspection Point implemented a telephone appointment system. Telephone call-in appointments can be made from 8:30-11:30 a.m. each duty day in order to schedule a POV inspection appointment for the next five business days.

To schedule an appointment for POV inspection, call DSN 431-3421 or civilian 07031-15-3421 to be connected with a person who will assign an appointment time.

The customer is required to provide their name, telephone number, email and license plate number. Once an appointment time is assigned, an email confirmation of the appointment will be sent. Customers should arrive a minimum of 10 minutes prior to the appointment, and bring a printed copy of the email confirmation of the scheduled appointment time.

Customers not present at the time of their appointment will lose the appointment time and customers on the stand-by list will be seen. In addition to the phone-in appointment system, walk-in’s will be accepted on space available basis.

The Logistics Readiness Center Plans and Operations Division asks that customers be patient as the current appointment system is migrated at the Stuttgart POV inspection office until an online solution can be provided.

Avery Muse Sr. said after training hard throughout the SESAME STREET “Katie’s Family Transitions to Civilian Life,” deals with a military child who is transitioning to civilian life at Sesame Street after living on military bases.

Her friends help her realize that she will always be a part of the military community by staying in contact with friends, making new friends in new places, and more. Characters Elmo, Cookie Monster, Grover, Rosita, and Honker were all there to help Katie and get the crowd singing and dancing.

“It was awesome!” exclaimed LeeAnn Bayer, mom of 3, after watching the show.

“Seeing the patriotism and kindness catches my heart.

It hits me whenever they are singing about being blue. We hope the kids understand the message.”

The Sesame Street Experience is free and was open to the entire Stuttgart community and their guests.

season and preparing for the tournament, he enjoyed seeing the kids reap the reward, ending their season with a 26-2 record.

“From the very beginning, we worked extremely hard to play the game the right way, to learn new habits — and to grow together as a team,” he said. “One of the strengths we gained was being able to match the intensity in all of our games throughout the season. This is a really special group of kids.”

The Stuttgart Eagles Basketball Club, according to their website, strives to provide young athletes with the same quality of training as they would receive in the US. In addition to skilled basketball players, they’re mission is to build well-rounded individuals by requiring a high grade-point average and maintaining good disciplinary status.

Reflecting on the tournament, Avery Muse Sr. said it was a great opportunity for the players to gain experience playing competitive teams as well as to build international connections.

He said he’s excited to return to the UWG with the team next year to represent both the club and the US. “I think we showed character, sportsmanship, and skill (in the UWG tournament),” he said.

“You always have to remember you’re representing your country and that’s a big deal. We’re there to really represent the red, white, and blue.”

AFRICOM hosts logistics forum

Whether fighting deadly diseases, facing the challenges of refugees fleeing violence in their homelands, or combating violent extremists, nations in Africa are seeking ways to move across the continent quickly with the right equipment to meet these needs.

To discuss how, military and civilian logistics experts, representing 36 African countries, and others from several European countries, attended the Africa Logistics Forum June 21-23, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. U.S. Africa Command sponsored the forum in partnership with the African Union and the U.S. Africa Center for Strategic Studies.

“In Africa, logistics has an important role in nearly everything we do.

Whether it’s building partner capacity or enabling an ally or partner,” said Gen. David Rodriguez during the forum’s keynote address.

Rodriguez, AFRICOM commander, said strong logistics capabilities are crucial to crises response and used Operation United Assistance — the USAID-led effort to assist Liberia during the Ebola outbreak —as an example of logistics in action. During

the operation, nearly 3,000 U.S. troops deployed to West Africa.

“Efforts across the logistics enterprise helped to set the theater for three additional efforts that we made, including communication and coordination, engineering and healthcare worker training,” he added.

As African partner nations work together to combat regional threats — like Boko Haram in West Africa and Al Shabaab in Somalia —they need to move forces in, out and around a multinational conflict zone. Strategic airlift, a major theme during the forum, addressed this issue.

“We’re here to look at some smart ways, some simple ways that experts can determine how to move forces from point A to point B,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Uduak Udoaka, chief of logistics engagement and exercises for AFRICOM. Col. D. Ahouanvoedo, a logistician with the Benin armed force, knows firsthand how important a capability like strategic airlift can be to troops on the ground.

“Our battalion was overstretched in the Congo, and we had a problem supplying materials to our battalion,” he said.

Ahouanvoedo was one of many

who shared their experiences from the field with peers during small group discussions.

Italy Army Brig. Gen. Dionigi Loria, director of logistics for the European Union Military Staff, said strategic airlift operations must be quick to prevent or end conflicts before they escalate. Not all partner nations in Africa have that capability and the coordination between countries can take time.

“How to deploy forces from the member states to the crisis area in the area of operation is probably one of the most challenging logistics functions,” he said.

Loria added that there are multiple ways to deliver strategic airlift capabilities, whether from a nation’s military, through a contracted company, or multinational solutions similar to the European Union’s Multinational Movement Control Center —Europe.

“There are challenges. But what is important is the willingness to solve them, to tackle them. To make sure the African Union is able to conduct crisis response operations in an efficient and effective way,” Loria said.

While the EU’s member nations’ military presents a model for the African Union to follow, AU member

states and other partner nations will have to find a solution that works for them.

Retired Senegal Army Col. Mor Mbow, now chief of mission and support operations, AU Peace and Security Division, said he doesn’t expect answers to come in three days. Instead, he hopes conversations between logisticians and the relationships they build during the forum will make follow-on working groups and multinational exercises more productive.

“Now we need to move to a more practical phase. And I’m sure that the working groups that we have established will be able to come up with practical solutions, starting with the principle of using African resources,” Mbow said.

Mbow said he envisions an African Union where member states build capacity as partners and only rely on resources from the international community to “augment” capabilities organic to that country. In essence, partner nations provide their own strategic airlift.

To get there, logisticians will continue to share their experiences in venues like the Africa Logistics Forum while testing their skills and systems during multinational exercises.

US Military on display at Paris Air Show

Department of Defense representatives and aircraft were on hand at the 51st International Paris Air Show, the largest aerospace event in the world, at Le Bourget Airport June 15-21 Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James along with Heidi Grant, deputy undersecretary of Air Force international affairs, Dr. William LaPlante, assistant secretary of the Air Force (acquisitions) and Gen. Frank Gorenc, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa commander, attended the air show to meet with foreign defense officials, air chiefs and industry CEOs. While the flying demonstrations at the air show are expected to draw a crowd of more than 139,000 over the three days it is open to the public, the main attraction for the DOD is the opportunity to build partnerships with their European allies and reaffirm their commitment to a secure and peaceful Europe.

James spoke to many of those

partners during the U.S. pavilion opening ceremony.

“It takes all of us working in a very synchronized fashion to reach our goal,” James explained. “We in the Air Force like to talk about global vigilance, global reach and global power, but we can’t get any of that done without our partners. In fact, I would submit that our joint success in the future will depend on those very partnerships.

The air show provides a collaborative opportunity to share and strengthen the U.S. and European strategic partnership that has been forged during the last seven decades and is built on a foundation of shared values, experiences and vision.

“Its important to show American equipment and American Airmen,” Gorenc said, “and it’s important that we describe how those Airmen and equipment operate together. We need to highlight our ability to interoperate with our partners.

While these meetings with foreign military officials and industry executives are the main focus for the DOD representatives, the crowd pleasers

are the aircraft the U.S. flew in to showcase.

Eleven aircraft make up the DOD corral of static displays which feature the A-10 Thunderbolt II, F-15E Strike Eagle, F-16C Fighting Falcon, CH-47 Chinook, RQ-7 Shadow UAV, UH-72 Lakota, UH-60 Black Hawk, AH-64 Apache, WC-130J Weatherbird and the P-8 Poseidon.

Many of these aircraft are vital components supporting Operation Atlantic Resolve, an ongoing mission led by U.S. European Command. OAR is the all-encompassing mission to demonstrate commitment to NATO allies and partners for peace in light of ongoing Russian intervention in Ukraine.

Events like this highlight the importance of working together to take on future challenges.

“Last year the biggest thing on the plate was how are we going to transition in Afghanistan,” Gorenc said in a recent interview. “This year, we deal with Russia, we’re dealing with ISIS [the Islamic State group], and we’re dealing with ebola. So, it reinforces the fact that despite all of our efforts, we cannot predict the future. However, what we can

predict is when there are challenges in the world, air power will be part of that solution. Oftentimes, air power is the first to respond.”

That responsive airpower is on display at Le Bourget.

Nearly 100 U.S. personnel, who are familiar with these aircraft, were on hand to meet guests, answer questions and give tours. They also had the chance to channel their inner celebrity and strike a pose for their fans.

“Every time we come to an air show the best part is just interacting with the crowds and people,” said Col. Dave Pollmiller, DOD air boss. “To be able to share our story and what our airplanes do, that is always the best part.”

For most of the U.S. military here, it is the first time exhibiting their aircraft at an airshow, and it’s not a time they will soon forget.

“I like seeing people from other countries and all of their aircraft and the items that they have here,” said Chief Warrant Officer Gerry Smith.

“They are very friendly, and it’s great to be able to see things in person that we could normally only see on TV. It has been a great experience here in Paris.”

Going Green: Natural lawnmowers cut carbon emissions on RB

U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart’s Directorate of Public Works has found a clever way of trimming its budget and reducing its carbon footprint — by bringing in sheep to trim the grounds.

Twenty black-headed sheep have taken up residence on Robinson Barracks to help maintain the installation’s vast, grassy hillsides in an environmentallyfriendly manner.

The installation welcomed the grazing herd June 22.

The livestock, owned by shepherd Dieter Fischle, are penned in a portable electric fence and will be moved as the sheep work their way through the grass. Robinson Barracks will be their home through the summer.

It’s not the first time sheep have been a part of RB’s landscape. Several community members remember the sheep from years past.

Natalie Camp, the Patch librarian, spent her elementary school years on Robinson Barracks in the early 70s.

These days Robinson Barracks is seen as a quiet bedroom community, but back then, with more than 4,000 Soldiers and civilians working on the caserne, it was the hub of what was dubbed the Greater Stuttgart Military Community.

Home to the largest PX in Europe at the time, “it was the place to go,” she said.

Even with all the hustle and bustle, a large huge flock of sheep came once a year to graze freely.

“It was a challenge to negotiate the sheep patties on the way to school through the valley,” Camp said. “But I have great memories, and I’m happy they have come back.”

When Heidi Malarchik, the USAG Stuttgart deputy to the commander, caught a glimpse of the sheep on her way to the American Forces Network Stuttgart studios June 24, she said she was transported back to 1979. “I lived in the bachelor officers’ quarters at Robinson Barracks and remember my delight at seeing the sheep on early summer mornings munching on the grass.”

If Facebook posts are any indication of sentiment, current RB residents feel the same way.

One thing is for sure. For RB residents, both past and present, the sheep will not easily be forgotten. “The legendary sheep remain a special part of our German experience,” Malarchik said.

On the Blotter On June 20 a service member was stopped by military police for failure to stop at a stop sign. Upon approach by the military police it turned out that the service member was not licensed and that the registered owner of the vehicle permitted the driver to drive without a USAREUR license in violation of Army in Europe Regulation 190-1. The two were brought to the military police station for further processing. USAREUR- licensed drivers who knowingly allow an unlicensed person to drive their vehicle are assessed 6 points on their license. Accumulating 12 or more points in one year results in a mandatory 180-day license suspension.

June 18 – June 30 there were 10 inattentive driving incidents, to include failure to clear

the rear, failure to yield the right-of-way, other minor traffic accidents and damage to parked vehicles.

Garmisch UNPLUGGED! Story by Wendy Payne contributing writer for MilitaryInGermany.com We call it Garmisch but locals call it Ga-Pa or Garmisch-Partenkirchen. If you are familiar with this part of Bavaria and have visited numerous times, we hope this blog helps you discover some of the other “hidden” treasures. With the help of fellow blogger and friend Kelly Lauer, we hope to introduce you to parts of Ga-Pa you may have yet to discover. You may find yourself going there several times during your tour as this area is a favorite with visiting family and friends. However, here are a few “off-grid” places you may want to try on your own.

Oh! Oberammergau!

The adorable town of Oberammergau (just outside of Garmisch) has a plethora of activities for you to try. Their very friendly (and English speak-

ing) tourism office is easy to find right on the main street and offers many options to experience.

Mostly known for their handmade wood carvings and ornaments, there are two Käthe Wohlfahrts (a Christmas decoration store) in this town, one specifically a “ChristKringleMarkt.”

Passion Play Also famous for its “Passion Play” production which performs every ten years (the next one is in 2020), the players must be born in Oberammergau

or have lived in town for 20 years. Our guide told us the men of the town start growing their beards in early summer and the women grow their hair long.

She also said it is quite a treat to see the transformation in town.

Eating Out For those with a sweet tooth, you may want to try a local delicacy called “Kaiserschmarren.” Order this at the beginning of your meal as it takes 2030 minutes to prepare, so unfortunately I missed my chance of trying it. But I was told it is the best dessert you’ll ever have. We were encouraged to visit a wonderful restaurant at Hotel Maxx. And it is not to be missed as the food and service were impeccable. Although I missed out on having this treat, I did get to try the delicious Apfelkuchen (apple strudel) with homemade ice cream.

Hiking Partnach-Klamm Partnach-Klamm is a deep gorge that is 702 meters long and over 80 meters deep in some areas.

Walking the trail provides breathtaking views of rock faces, mountain sides and a raging river below.

What to expect: There is a hiking path carved into the rock along the gorge. While there are poles staked in the ground with chains to use as a handrail, I don’t recommend it for persons with mobility issues because there are uneven and slick surfaces. Dogs are permitted on a leash. (If your dog tugs on the leash, this adventure also should be missed.) We saw kids as young as 6 on the trail enjoying themselves, but keep in mind that there is no room for strollers. So this trip is best left for kids who can make the walk on their own.

What to wear: You Will Get Wet. In the Partnach-Klamm water drips even after a long time without precipitation. For safety’s sake, wear waterproof and slip resistant shoes. Because a lot of the trail is through tunnels, umbrellas are not advised. They’re actually more dangerous than helpful in cramped quarters. A waterproof jacket with a hood or a hat is your best bet.
