The lord mayor of Mainz, and representatives of the Mainz city government, visited USAG Wiesbaden April 14 in order to familiarize themselves with their American neighbors.

Lord Mayor Michael Ebling and others took the time to tour the garrison led by Col. Mary Martin, USAG Wiesbaden commander, and Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Roy Rocco.

While here, they received a windshield tour of Clay Kaserne, visited the airfield, received a tour of the U.S. Army Europe Mission Control Center and briefing on USAREUR,

and spent time interfacing with their garrison counterparts.

“I’m very thankful we were invited for this visit,” Ebling said. “It’s the first time I have had the opportunity to see this historic installation and the command center for U.S. Army Europe.”

He also said it was very impressive to see all of the new construction he’d known was happening over the past few years.

Another member of the group, Hannsgeorg Schönig, chairman of the Christian Democratic Union-City Council faction, said the base has changed a lot since he last had the chance to visit.

Response: Thanks for sharing your concerns with us. However, please note that awarding employees is a valid Army program conducted across the Department of Defense. The Customer Service Award program you are mentioning was developed by our garrison and has been run successfully for years. It helps us to instill customer service as a top priority in the workplace. Day-to-day interactions between employees and customers have long-lasting effects and by recognizing and rewarding desired behavior, the program helps to foster a climate of service excellence. That is one of our priorities. The winners of the award are selected by an official cross-directorate board.

Community yard sales

In reaction to your email and in order to prevent similar incidents in the future, the provost marshal has directed the MP Desk to take the license plate when a parking violation occurs and attempt to find the violator to determine if they are authorized to park in the reserved space or not. Should you observe any parking violation in the future, please continue to report these incidents to the MP Desk and I hope together we can discourage this behavior in our community.

Benches at bus stops

In particular the shuttle bus stop located behind the gym along the perimeter road adjacent to the fence. I pass by there just about every morning and evening and see Soldiers, family members and civilians waiting for the bus to show. I’m not sure how long the wait is, but I would guess relatively long as on most days I see folks sitting on the concrete slab the glass enclosure was built on. Would it be feasible to install a bench of some kind inside the enclosure so shuttle bus riders can wait in comfort for the bus? Understand money is tight; I would think with all the ongoing construction a few hundred dollars could be allocated for a bench.

Response: Thank you for providing your recommendation. The provision of benches inside U.S.-controlled bus stop shelters is identified within our revised Installation Design Guide. When funds are available, we will order the material and install a bench as recommended by our in-house work force. Once again, thank you for your input.

Response: You are correct. Currently, there is not a dedicated walkway to the new PX. There is a sidewalk planned along the upper entrance (Texasstrasse) down to the shopping center, but was not included in the PX project. It will be constructed as part of the Commissary project. In the interim, we will make a connection from the sidewalk along Texasstrasse to the parking lot, which will be at grade so it will be ADA/stroller friendly. We are also adding painted crosswalks to connect the existing sidewalk along Texasstrasse. Thank you for your comment.

Could it have been prevented?

This was the question posed at U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden’s annual Days of Remembrance ceremony April 17 at the Tony Bass Auditorium.

The ceremony, hosted by the 66th Military Intelligence Brigade, brought together the American military community and leaders from Wiesbaden’s Jewish community to explore the past and honor those who lost their lives during the Holocaust, “a time when darkness and evil engulfed the earth, when life was made cheap and killing of innocents commonplace,” as Rabbi (Capt.) David Ruderman put it during his invocation.

“We remember those who were murdered, so many cut down before their time because they were targeted by a twisted and violent world view,” he continued. “We remember as well the heroes of those times, men and women in uniform, who rose to confront evil and fought to restore sanity to the world. Even as we grieve, we are proud to be a part of that legacy and to follow in those footsteps.”

A video by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., titled “Never Again: Heeding the Warning Signs” depicting the events leading up to the Holocaust, such as Kristallnacht, or the Night of Broken Glass, was shown to illustrate that hindsight truly is 20/20. Afterward, seven-year-old Emilie Riley lit six candles — one symbolizing the six million Jews murdered; one for the 1.5 million children murdered by the Nazis; one in commemoration of the ghetto fighters and partisans in the forests; one in honor of the small minority of non-Jewish Europeans who risked their own lives to save Jews from the claws of the Nazis; one in commemoration of the survivors of the Holocaust who after the horror of the Nazi regime built up a new existence for themselves; and the last will be lit in honor of the state of Israel which has become the homeland for the Jewish people.

The candles were yellow, like the arm band Jews were forced to wear during the Nazi regime.

Volunteers read the stories of Holocaust survivors and heroes.

One in particular hit close to home. Mackenzie Riley, 11, recounted the story of her greatgrandmother, Andzia Szpilman,

a true survivor who endured four years in a Lodz, Poland ghetto with her family, followed by time in concentration camps Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen and Salzwedel.

As conditions became progressively worse and food became scarce in the ghetto, she and her sister survived in the ghetto by eating weeds for extra nutrition.

At Auschwitz, she narrowly escaped death when the Nazis sent everyone directly in front of her to the gas chambers. At Salzwedel labor camp, she and the foreman on the bullet-making assembly line helped undermine the Nazi war by making the bullets a fraction too big, causing them to get stuck in the barrel. They made some good bullets and put them on top of the defective ones to fool the Nazis.

After liberation, she met her husband, Jacob, at a displaced persons camp and they married a few weeks later.

“It feels good to talk about her,” Mackenzie said. “I never got to know her that well. I think it’s cool she survived something like that.

She lost almost her whole family.”

Finally, Rabbi Avraham Zeev Nussbaum from the Wiesbaden Synagogue sang a prayer in Hebrew, swaying slowly side to side as his voice rang out in the silent room. He said he felt at ease reciting the prayer in the company of U.S. Army Soldiers.

“What’s most important is to remember the politics,” he said.

“Every Soldier and every citizen must be confronted with the question, ‘What can I do?’ to not repeat this in the world.”

Dental Clinic closures

The Wiesbaden Dental Clinic will be closed on the afternoons of April 24 and May 29.

Wiesbaden Client Services moving

Wiesbaden Client (Legal) Services will be relocating to Building 4013 in Mainz Kastel, located next door to the Thrift Shop. The office will be closed April 22-26 in order to move. It will open with normal business hours April 27.

New Passport Office hours

The Military Personnel Division of the Passport Office will have new hours as of April 20: On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8:30-11:30 a.m. is for walk-ins and 1-4 p.m. is for appointments with walk-ins on a space-available basis. The office is closed Tuesday. On Thursday, appointments (with walk-ins on a space-available basis) are 9 a.m. to noon; 1-4 p.m. are for walk-ins and 4-6 p.m. are for evening appointments. New license plate restrictions

U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden vehicle registration office will only issue or renew registrations for the “WI” license plates. Personnel who have license plates from other communities or have license plates previously issued through the USAG Wiesbaden vehicle registration office that begin with letters other than WI will be required to switch to the WI plates when renewing their registrations.

Those personnel with a current exception to policy to have license plates beginning with other than WI will have to go to the USAREUR Vehicle Registry office in Sembach, after they have had their vehicle inspected, to renew their registrations. The USAG Wiesbaden vehicle registration office no longer has access in the registration system to process any registrations other than those that begin with WI. All requests for exceptions to policy must be requested through and approved by USAREUR Vehicle Registry and them.

Retiree reenrollment at clinic

The Wiesbaden Army Health Clinic can again offer health care services to retirees in the nearby area, and health care providers are seeking to reenroll approximately 300 retirees into its health care system by June 1. Military retirees who live within a 30-mile radius can sign up at the Wiesbaden Tricare Office to receive primary health care services from local providers.

Garrison holds SHARP Stand-down

Male victims were the focus at U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden’s Sexual Harassment and Assault Response/ Prevention Stand-down at the Clay Kaserne Fitness Center April 15, an event that included an obstacle course navigated while wearing beer goggles and a resource fair showcasing the garrison’s myriad support programs.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, with the theme “Not in my squad. Not in our Army. We are trusted professionals.”

Ten thousand, eight hundred men are sexually assaulted every year in the military. Less than 15 percent will report it compared with 39 percent of women, according to the Department of Defense Annual Report on Sexual Assault in the Military.

“That is why I wanted to talk about men,” said Dr. Priscilla Fleischer, guest speaker at the event and professional social worker specializing in eating disorders, trauma and sexual trauma.

“It doesn’t make it any less important than what happens to women, but it’s important we acknowledge this is happening to men, too.”

Fleischer, a victim of sexual assault when she was five years old and later as an adult, detailed the effects of sexual assault she has become familiar with both personally and professionally as a counselor. A victim’s sense of safety and self-worth is lost, and he or she feels shame — feeling bad for who you are. It can manifest in depression, anger, anxiety, substance abuse and sometimes, suicide.

She also dispelled some of the myths men believe about sexual assault: That men and boys cannot be victims (yet statistically, boys are much more likely to be assaulted in organizations like schools and churches); if a male experiences arousal, they must have “wanted it;” and that if he tells anyone about it, it means he is weak and unable to cope.

“For men, the hardest thing in the world is to tell someone,” Fleischer said. “Men feel they have to suck it up and move on, but like any wound that does not heal, it will fester.”

The good news is that more victims, both male and female, are talking. Sexual assault reporting has increased eight percent from FY13. There were 2,128 unrestricted reports and 397 restricted reports of sexual assault in the Army in FY14, said Garrison Commander Col. Mary Martin. It’s the highest recorded since the Army began keeping these statistics.

“Don’t let those numbers scare you — as long as victims are reporting, we can continue to fight sexual assault in our Army,” she said.

Fleischer concluded by offering words of hope as a victim and encouraged those affected to talk to someone.

“If you have experienced something, don’t carry it around. Talk to someone.

You don’t need to be alone,” she said.

“You can heal. It is possible.”

Families gather for Tell Me a Story ‘Giraffes Can’t Dance’ teaches children it’s ok to be different

“Sometimes when you’re different, you just need a different song.” Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, Commanding General, U.S. Army Europe, echoed this wisdom shared by the cricket in the book, “Giraffes Can’t Dance” by Giles Andreae.

“The number one lesson we learned is that no matter what other people say about you, you can always do better than they think. If you trust yourself, right inside of you you’ve got the strength to do things,” Hodges said after reading the book to 89 children and 75 adults who had gathered at Hainerberg Elementary School on April 19.

Hodges’ reading was the main feature of Tell Me A Story, a semiannual event organized by Parent-toParent Wiesbaden to promote literacy through reading, discussions and crafts.

After the reading, families divided into different groups for facilitated discussions led by volunteers.

This gave children and parents the opportunity to express their own ideas about the story and to experience how books can inspire us to examine our lives.

“After hearing the story, I want to be like the cricket and help others,” said Roque Palacios, a fifth-grader.

Parents appreciated that military children can identify with the giraffe in the story. “The giraffe was the new guy, just like military children often are and they have to learn how to adapt,” Staff Sgt. Jennifer Lester said.

Joni Ramsey pointed out that the story reflects the difficulties that military children face. “We were talking in our group about being the new kid after you’ve moved somewhere. It’s important that military children learn how to handle new situations, [be] themselves and appreciate their own differences,” Ramsey said.

Families also created a variety of crafts that related to themes in the featured book.

One parent at the event said he appreciated the chance to combine reading with getting to know others.

“Both of my boys like to read, and it’s fun for them to come here, meet other kids and get to know a different story,” said Spc. Chase Sutfin.

The Military Child Education Coalition launched TMAS in 2005 to empower military children to use literature and their own stories to build resiliency skills, to forge strong peer and parent connections, to instill a sense of pride and accomplishment and to become an active part in a caring community.

Wiesbaden High School JROTC cadets helped with setup, registration, crafts, scribing and cleanup.

“I volunteered for TMAS because it’s a lot of fun. I enjoy working with the JROTC kids and the Parent-to-Parent team. It’s great to give back to the community,” said Katie Kilgore, a 10th-grade student.

Mayfest

Members of the Wiesbaden High School Marching Band perform at the Hessen State Parliament on April 16.

American students were featured in the student recognition program, part of a state of Hessenwide student competition.

The Wiesbaden High School class of 2015 is hosting Mayfest, a spring carnival for all ages, May 3 at the high school from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Activities include more than 20 different games, a bouncy house, dunk booth, obstacle course, face painting, cake walk and more. Concessions include funnel cakes, cotton candy, popcorn, hotdogs, hamburgers and more. There will be raffles and silent auctions for gift certificates from AAFES, Taunus Theater, a USO trip and many local businesses. All proceeds will benefit the senior class and will go towards paying for graduation at the Kurhaus, the “Project Graduation” boat ride following the ceremony, the class gift to the school and more.

Language immersion programs

Hainerberg Elementary School is offering a kindergarten through second grade Spanish immersion program and a grades 1-3 German immersion program. If you are interested in applying for your child’s consideration in one of these programs, contact the main office.

School buses

The garrison encourages students to utilize the Department of Defense Dependents School buses that receive priority access to the installation. They are currently being utilized by less than 50 percent of those registered to ride them. For questions about acquiring a bus pass for your child, call mil 337-2240 or civ (0611) 705-2240. Also, if buses are parked around school, dropping off or picking up students, drivers may pass them. It is a DoDEA and garrison expectation that parents walk their child to and from school/bus stop.

Warrant officer overcomes odds, earns master’s in cyber security

Chief Warrant Officer 4 Sonya Barrow overcame all odds to get where she is today. As a single teenage mother living in poverty in Augusta, Ga., she joined the Army for a better future.

Today, she has served over 22 years in the U.S. Army, progressed through the ranks to chief warrant officer 4, and is earning her third degree with UMUC, a master’s degree in cyber security.

Freedom Run

More than 400 people turned out for the fourth annual Freedom Run April 18 on Wiesbaden’s Clay Kaserne. Ten-mile run. ners kicked off the event racing off of the installation, followed by five-mile runners/ walkers and half-mile youth sprinters making their way around Clay. Spencer Johnson was the first across the finish line in the 10-miler event in 58 minutes and 55 seconds. He was followed by Philip Curiel in 1:03:25 and Ryan Parker in 1:04:32. Tatjana Romulus led the female runners in 1:13:20.

Patricia Payton was the second woman to cross the finish line in 1:18:56. A team from U.S. Army Garrison Baumholder claimed the team trophy. The event, sponsored by Andrews Federal Credit Union and Wiesbaden’s Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation, featured a barbecue for finishers.

The Stuttgarter Frühlingsfest, one of Europe’s most visited spring festivals, will take place at the Cannstatter Wasen until May 10.

During Cooley’s tenure as Wiesbaden BOSS president, she executed several programs, including “BOSS Against Drunk Driving,” which helped to reduce DUI incidents.

Wiesbaden BOSS had the most volunteer hours in Europe among all programs and a participation rate of 95 percent among single Soldiers. Cooley increased BOSS membership by 40 percent, and BOSS volunteers supported events like the holiday tree lighting ceremony, Department of Defense Dependents School System wrestling and basketball tournaments and boxing matches. She successfully bolstered partnership with Army Community Service, Sexual Harassment and Assault Response/Prevention, the GermanAmerican Kontakt Club, Red Cross, Equal Employment Opportunity and especially the German military, setting up several rifle qualifying ranges, which gave lower enlisted Soldiers a chance to get their campaign badge. BOSS also worked with the Mainz children’s hospital and orphanage to give sick and parentless children a Christmas. Cooley has earned her master’s degree and will exit the Army to pursue a career in the United States.

Make an escape to paradise in Mallorca Cathedrals and caves top attactions for tourists

As you walk onto the beach and feel the sand between your toes, and the warm sun hits your skin, you can’t help but feel like you’re in paradise. There’s no better way to take a break from reality by traveling to Mallorca, a beautiful island off the coast of Spain.

Mallorca, just a two-hour nonstop flight from Frankfurt, is a popular vacation spot and has a lot to offer. The island has activities for the more relaxed vacationers who like to lay out on the warm beach, but also for the more adventurous ones who want to explore the island by car, bike or segway.

Resorts all along the coast offer amenities and activities and are just a short walk to the beach. On the beach you can find activities from paddleboarding, to beach volleyball or jet skiing. Be sure to pack sunscreen because around

One of the most popular sites on the island are the Caves of Drach, which translates to “dragon caves.” While visitors won’t find fire-breathers here, they can take a boat ride under the caves, and even watch a concert performed on a stage inside.

famous Catedral de Santa Maria, also known as Le Seu, are also a must-see for anyone vacationing in Mallorca. The island has multiple activities for all ages and will make for a very memorable and relaxing vacation. Paradise is found in Mallorca.

Vendors from all over Europe set up shop at the Clay Kaserne Fitness Center April 17-20 to sell their unique tax-free wares, including tapestries, handmade dolls, furniture, “name frames,” rugs, Polish pottery, jewelry, specialty spirits and liquor and more. Neighboring cities Wiesbaden, Hofheim, Ruedesheim and Eltville and Schloss Freudenberg were also on site Saturday to distribute information about local tourist attractions.

Army Europe headquarters welcomed Lt. Gen. Raimonds Graube, the Latvian Chief of Defense of Armed Forces, April 20, who met with Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, commander of Army Europe, during a visit to discuss ongoing exercises and future opportunities to build the alliance.

“We feel much safer and stronger because of the alliance and because we have friends like the United States,” Graube said during a small media event at the end of his visit.

The general also spoke about the ongoing situation in the Baltic states and how the partnership between Latvian and U.S. Soldiers is imperative to deterring Russian aggression.

“It is not only just a political statement, it is real, their forces are there,” Graube said speaking about Russia’s recent flyovers and submarine activity in Latvia’s air and maritime zones.

“Because of the situation around my country’s borders, your [U.S.] help and assistance is crucial and the United States is still exercising side by side with Latvian Soldiers,” the defense chief added.

Turning to a more positive note, Graube mentioned the growing friendships he had witnessed over the past year between the two nations. He insisted that exercises taking place fostered a very important social aspect to partnership training and that he was very happy seeing this.

“These exercises are not only a great opportunity for Soldiers to train

together for future deployments but it is also about friendship,” Graube said.

“A very important piece that we should not forget about is the social part, they are living together and training together. We are friends.”

For your health April is Women’s Eye Health and Safety Month

By Tri-Service Vision Conservation and Readiness Program Staff U�S� Army Public Health Command

Women are often the people in the family responsible for taking care of their family’s health concerns, yet they often neglect their own health, including the health of their eyes. Two-thirds of people in the world affected by visual impairments and blindness are women, even though they represent only 53 percent of the population.

The rate of eye disease is on the rise in the United States mostly because people are living longer, and women, on average, live longer than men. As a result, more women are susceptible to age-related eye diseases such as macular degeneration, cataracts, dry eyes, glaucoma and diabetic changes of the eye, as well as other conditions. Because of this, Prevent BlindnessAmerica has designatedApril as Women’s Eye Health and Safety Month to help educate women about the steps that they must take to help prevent vision loss by making their own eye health a priority.

While the following recommendations apply to all, during April, the emphasis is on women so that they remember to take care of themselves as well as their families.

Get routine eye care. Many causes of eyesight problems are preventable, so all women should make having regular eye examinations a regular part of their health routine to minimize the risk. It is recommended that all women receive a comprehensive eye examination by

Know your family history. Everyone is aware that genetics play an important role in what diseases you are at risk for, including eye diseases. By knowing what conditions your ancestors have had, you can notify your eye care professional of what those condi-

tions are, and in some cases, do things to prevent or lessen the effect of those conditions in you.

Eat healthy and exercise. Eating healthy and exercising is important in maintaining a proper weight to reduce the risk factors for certain conditions.

Doing so can also assist you in guarding against vision loss. Obesity, a lack of exercise, stress and a bad diet all can

affect the health of your eyes.

Avoid smoke. Smoking, even secondhand smoke, increases the risks for certain eye diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration. Avoid smoking and being around smokers if at all possible.

Wear good sunglasses. Ultraviolet light exposure has also been linked to the development of cataracts and macular degeneration. It is recommended that when you go outside, consider wearing brimmed hats and UV-rated sunglasses.

Use cosmetics and contacts safely. You know the rules for using these safely. Wash your hands first. Throw away old makeup and contacts. Do not share them with others. Do not apply them while driving.

By following these directions, you can prevent a serious eye infection that could result in permanent loss of vision.

Remember, as the one who is responsible for making certain that everyone is healthy, it is important that you remain around to continue to take care of your family and that you see well enough to maintain that role. Taking care of your eyes is an easy way to assist you in meeting those important functions for years to come.

Picturesque Village on the Wine Road

What to see

Kropsburg Castle was built in the 13th century and is now a restaurant and tavern. It first served as a residence of the Bishop of Speyer and then later passed into the hands of the Lords of Dalberg. The castle was destroyed in 1689, however the outer bailey was rebuilt, which now houses the restaurant Castle Tavern at Kropsburg. You will find this castle restaurant in the countryside above the village of St. Martin. St. Martin’s Church in the village has an impressive clock tower but inside the Gothic art treasures and the Gothic vault are a must-see. Outside the church is the sandstone figure of St. Martin, which is a listed monument.

The church is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A walk around the town features other UNESCO listed monuments including the halftimbered houses, the 18th century statue of St. Anthony on Maikammerstrasse and the late Renaissance (early 17th century) wooden statue of Christ. If you have never been to St. Martin, you will surely find something to interest you. Shopping in St. Martin offers browsing in curio, antique shops and much more.

Eating and drinking

St. Martin (referred to as Sankt Martin in German) is one of the loveliest villages on the “German Wine Road” (Deutsche Weinstrasse) in RheinlandPfalz. St. Martin has the distinction of being the only place in Germany that is named after a saint. St. Martin gave half of his cloak to a beggar who was only wearing rags during a harsh winter. The area surrounding has been inhabited since Roman times. Nested in the hills and surrounded by vineyards, this is a paradise to visit for its beauty, wine, food, shopping and more.

There are several options available for wine tasting. The Winery, the old chateau located at Maikammerer Road 7, is close to the Weingut Rössler – Schneider found at number 12. You can sample some great wines at the Wine & Sekthof Cutter (located at number 48) and the Winery Gernert (located at number 39). There are many other wineries in St. Martin and you don’t have to look very hard to find them. The Weingut Joachim Raabe is not only a place to purchase and taste wine, but a place to find delectable seasonal and regional specialty dishes. This traditional familyrun restaurant and vineyard is reasonably priced.

Flammkuchen, a type of pizza with a thin crackerlike crust is one you will want to try. It is generously covered in crème fraiche, topped with the traditional onions and lardons (matchstick-sized pieces of belly pork) or bacon, and sometimes comes with a seasonal vegetable such as broccoli.

Saint Martiner Castell is a hotel and restaurant and offers light German cuisine and an international menu. This restaurant is reasonably priced

and the traditional dishes are prepared with fresh local produce. There are other places to eat in the village of St. Martin and perhaps in your wanderings, you will come across a little gem of your own.
