Every year the Army Europe Youth Summer Hire Program is offered to high school and college students ranging from 14 to 22 years old. The program is geared toward giving youth in the community an opportunity to gain work experience over a sixweek period as either a laborer or clerk throughout U.S Army Garrison Wiesbaden. When asked why they became a summer hire, two young adults working for Child, Youth and School Services Sports and Fitness, Nick Harris and Andre Sterling, simultaneously agreed the monetary aspects motivated them. But for a number of summer hires and their supervisors, they gained much more. “Some of the things you accomplished include

processing over 200,000 pieces of mail, assembling 15 tons of equipment, updating continuity books, and working at DFMWR summer camps,” said Garrison Commander Col. Mary Martin at a recognition ceremony Aug. 7. “The good thing is you got lots of positive ICE comments. I hope you got a better understanding of how a garrison works.” “If it was not for them, we could not finish our mission here,” said Quintin Harvey, supervisor of postal operations. Harvey is also the supervisor of the summer hires assigned to Wiesbaden’s Postal Service Center. His appreciation for the program and the students he receives stems from the number of employees at the post office who take leave during the summer. See ‘Summer’ on page 5

Celebrating Women’s Equality Day Ninety-five years ago, the 19th Amendment was ratified, signaling a momentous commitment to equal rights for all Americans. As we acknowledge women’s struggles and celebrate their right to vote, we also recognize women in the Army for their tremendous contributions and relentless spirit in helping to keep this Nation free. As the Army transitions into the future, we will ensure that men and women are given the opportunity to maximize their potential and are positioned for success. Women Veterans, past and present, have proven the depth of their patriotism and bravery. Their exemplary dedication will be a touchstone as the Army affords greater opportunities for women to serve. In celebrating Women’s Equality Day, the Army recognizes not only the significance of women’s contributions but also the value of diversity and an inclusive environment. As we honor the women and their Army service, we encourage our entire Army Family to celebrate their leadership and courage. Like all Soldiers, they are the Strength of the Nation.

AFN DJ: Be the ‘real’ you on radio By Paul “the Brit” Hughes AFN Wiesbaden

Doing a radio show on your own is fun, and doing it with others is even more fun, fun for me, fun for my guest and fun for the audience. So, since it’s more enjoyable I try to find a broad range of guests to appear on the show with me, people like Jackie Toops, an Army spouse and professional blogger. I love having guests on my show. I want as many as I can from a variety of backgrounds and information sources. It brings the show to life. For instance, for most of July I have

been using guest co-hosts to support the regular guests I have on the show. I have had them on through the most listened-to hours (7:30 to 9 a.m.) as my regular co-host Master Sgt. J.R. Williams is away. This has presented challenges such as content, logistics and flow. The biggest challenge, though, is how to get the best conversation out of my guests, many of whom have never been on air. The majority of guests come well prepped, will know their subject matter and bring flavor, fun and variety to the show; that is, except, when they don’t. Some people picture in their mind’s

eye that being on the radio leaves them exposed in front of thousands of listeners, and then they get tense. This is more common if they haven’t prepared well enough. All a DJ and an audience want from a guest is for them to be themselves. My job is purely to put you at ease and facilitate your greatness — you are the star. I want the “real” you to be my guest! Some of my favorite guests have included a psychiatrist who talked about “random acts of kindness,” a guy who listened to Nickleback for 172 hours (and nearly lost his mind), and an entire

seven-piece band of sisters (Cimorelli). Why were they so fun? They were just their authentic selves and it resulted in a natural conversation. Finding guests isn’t always easy and that’s where I could use your help. Has your unit won an award? Been to a great class and want to share it? Blessed with a particular skill? Written an article that you are passionate about? Part of a group or club? Come and talk to me and publicize your event, award, or information through radio — it really works. Authenticity and preparation are all you need; we can do the rest here!

Legal advice - Children born in Germany U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Legal Assistance Office New parents have lots of questions about obtaining the proper documents for their children, whether a passport, a birth certificate or a Social Security number. Here is what you need to do in each of those situations.

How do I get a copy of my child’s birth certificate from a German hospital?

In Germany the Office of Vital Statistics (Standesamt) located in the Town Hall (Rathaus) issues a certificate of descent (Abstammungsurkunde). German hospitals are generally required by law to pass all birth information to the Office of Vital Statistics (Standesamt) that has jurisdiction over the area where the hospital is located. Apart from the ordinary German version, an international birth certificate (Geburtsurkunde) may be issued upon special request by the parents. That document displays all data in several languages, including English. The first copy will cost €7; additional copies can be obtained for €3.50. You will have to present the Abstammungsurkunde to the U.S. General Consulate. If you give birth in a German hospital, be prepared for a visit from a representative of the hospital administration about the birth certificate (if they do not visit you, you should ask about it, especially if you are in the hospital only on the weekend or on a German holiday). The hospital will want your original marriage certificate, military IDs and passports for you and your spouse, as well as a cash fee. They will ask a few questions, fill out the forms, have you sign the forms and in a few weeks you will receive your child’s German birth certificate in the Deutsch post. If you give birth in Landstuhl, you need fill out AE Form 40-400 (Report of Child Born Abroad) which will be issued at the hospital. You need your original marriage certificate, original birth certificate of both parents, passport/ID cards, divorce decree and an affidavit of paternity if the parents were married for a period of less than 10 months. If you are single, you will need your passport and military ID and an affidavit of paternity from the father, along with the father’s birth certificate and ID card. Without the affidavit of paternity, the mother’s maiden

name will be entered on the child’s birth certificate without the father’s name and information.

How do I get a United States passport for my child (including a newborn)?

This is easy if you are a military or a DoD ID holder. As soon as your child is born, contact your local post passport office and make an appointment to visit the passport office. The passport office will tell you what to bring to the appointment. At this appointment, the passport office will help you fill out the application for the Consular Report of Birth Abroad and United States passport. The passport employee will then take your documents to the United States Consulate in Frankfurt for processing.

When should I apply for a Social Security number for my child?

As soon as possible because you will want it when you file your federal income tax return, if your child is a U.S. citizen or you live in the United States; however, be aware that having a Social Security number is not proof of U.S. citizenship. The easiest way to obtain the Social Security number is to contact your post passport office and ask for assistance. When you apply for the Consular Report of Birth Abroad with the passport office, the passport office will normally have you apply for a social security number at the same time. Or, you may visit the Social Security Administration’s website and download application form SS-5-FS (http://www.ssa.gov).

How old does my child have to be to obtain a passport and can I get the passport without the other parent?

A child may receive a passport as long as they have the following documents: birth certificate or report of birth abroad, certification of birth abroad or certificate of citizenship or naturalization. A passport is a travel document issued by competent authority showing the bearer’s origin, identity, and nationality, if any, which is valid for the entry of the bearer into a foreign country (8 U.S.C. 1101(3)). Effective July 2, 2001, the State Department requires both parents’ consent to obtain passports and visas for travel of children under age 14 (Sec. 236, Public Law 106-113).

For further information please contact the Passport Section on post or go to: http://www.travel.state.gov/ passport/get/minors/minors_834.html. It is possible for a parent to sign a consent form for the passport and not have to be present. However, both parents’ consent is required unless otherwise ordered in a court decree.

What determines whether or not my child is entitled to German citizenship?

According to § 4 para. 1 German Citizenship Act (Staatsangehörigkeitsgesetz StAG), at least one of the parents has to be a German citizen in order to pass on German citizenship to the child. That child will be entitled to German citizenship even if the other parent passes that parent’s citizenship along. Contrary to children born to non-German parents, these children do not have to decide whether to keep or revoke German citizenship once they reach the age of 18. They may keep their German citizenship for life even if they also have another citizenship; however, Germans born abroad after Dec. 31, 1999, can no longer pass on German citizenship to their children, if they have their ordinary residence abroad (§ 4 para. 4 StAG). Simply being born in Germany does not entitle anyone to German citizenship, unless one of the child’s parents has been an ordinary resident in Germany for the past eight years and either possesses a right to reside or holds an unlimited alien’s residence permit (§ 4 para. 3 StAG). In such a case, the child is allowed to have dual citizenship. The child will be entitled to German citizenship in addition to any foreign citizenship the parents may have passed to their child through the line of blood. However, the child has to decide which citizenship to keep once the child turns 18 years old (§ 29 StAG). Just because your child is born in Germany, your child is not necessarily entitled to German citizenship. If you have questions, please see the Legal Assistance Office at the Wiesbaden Legal Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. It is also open Thursdays from 1 to 4 p.m. To visit with an attorney, call for an appointment at 537-0664.

purchase of land for the construction of the $133 million Newman Village Housing Area, which features 326 Army Family Housing singlefamily and duplex townhouse units. Gerber said that ensuring adequate housing by constructing Newman Village and improving on the other housing areas was very important in moving USAREUR to Wiesbaden, in addition to ensuring the facilities required for their mission were completed. “The operational facilities were key to moving USAREUR here,” he said. “So getting the design done for the MCC and CIC were some of our initial challenges. Then we had to complete the MCC on schedule so they could move in.” He added that the most challenging project he faced at the head of TSMO was the construction of the new Clay Kaserne Access Control Point. “We were limited on funding for the project,” he said, “but we had to make certain we met the criteria set forth by the Protective Design Center.” Those criteria should have led to a $14 million budget, but TSMO only had $6.3 million. In the end, like most projects, they got it done and with all the require ments met. “The ACP was a two-year design project,” Gerber said. “But the construction went very smoothly.” Judith Rodriguez, TSMO design branch chief, said that kind of challenge was one the directorate faced regularly. “We always had to rearrange projects and find new solutions,” she said. “But we always got a functional building in the end.” For Geospatial Information Systems Manager Timo Spindler, who started with the directorate in

Construction workers work on one of the new parking garages built to help with the larger amount of community members. 2009, the projects he’s most proud of are those garrison members might never notice. “It’s the projects you don’t see, the infrastructure projects that had to be done before the big construction projects could happen,” he said, referring to things like updates to the sewer, water and electrical lines, or the installation of new transformers. “We didn’t shut down or stop working when we did those,” he said. “The upgrades happened while the garrison kept working.” Rodriguez said she was exceptionally happy to see all of the community improvement efforts they’ve accomplished. “For the community, a lot of the projects, like the new entertainment center, PX and Child Development Center, made a big impact,” she said.

Gerber said all of the changes to USAG Wiesbaden could not have been accomplished without other organizations and the host nation assisting TSMO to get the mission done, including the contracting office, Army Corps of Engineers and TSMO’s partner architecture and engineer firms. In the end, TSMO made that “big impact” Rodriguez mentioned throughout the now 19,000-strong USAG Wiesbaden community, according to Col. David Carstens, f o r m e r U S A G Wi e s b a d e n commander and currently the USAREUR Inspector General. “We speak a lot about how Wiesbaden is our home in Germany,” Carstens said. “TSMO, with the help of our host nation, made it that way.”

“This is a high season for a lot of leave because we cannot take leave from November to January,” he said. “We need them, or I don’t know where our operation would go.” This appreciation does not only go one-way. Taking a break from organizing magazines that came in on a bulk truck, two summer hires shared why they are so fond of having this chance. “I had the opportunity last summer, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. This is another way for me to give back to the community,” said college student Mariah Garner, visiting her family for summer break. Garner’s main job is processing mail for the community. This sentiment was also shared by Wiesbaden High School student John A. English, who never had a job before his Summer Hire opportunity. “I wanted the experience,” he explained. “Anybody old enough to participate should. Anybody who hasn’t had a job should get the work experience.” English and Garner acknowledged that the job could seem grueling at times, but they also made clear that they would do it all again. “We worked for every penny we earned because we did everything by

hand. It’s tough, but it’s the people here and the atmosphere that makes you want to come back every day,” said Garner. She added that the random days they received free pizza was also a pleasant bonus. The pair affirmed that the Summer Hire Program not only allowed them to get on-the-job experience, but it made them respect and admire people in a workplace where the community does not know all that is going on behind the scenes. Students do not get to choose which office they work in. Parents appreciated the opportunity for their kids to get a taste of the working world, too. “I like the fact they had the responsibility of getting to a job on time,” said Traci Louie, mother to Reuben Torres, working at the Directorate of Public Works, and Reginald Torres, at the library. “They actually had a job to do.” Reginald had a weekly list of things to do. He swept on Mondays, vacuumed on Tuesdays, buffed CDs later on in the week and shelved books after all of his duties were completed. He was also responsible for a number of miscellaneous tasks that he said were “fun and dandy.” “It was better than earning nothing in

The grant will provide each seventh-grade student with a STEM-related study trip per month for the first semester, and the Teen Center will host one STEM activity a month to each seventh grader in groups of 25 kids. The Corps will continue showing seventh-graders how STEM works in the real world — and how to make STEM work for them. “The kids were overwhelmed,” said Hargis. “The change of pace opened their eyes to a different arena of careers and added relevance to what they were learning.” The award is the latest in a string of recognitions for the middle school, including the Green Ribbon Award for reducing environmental impact and utility costs, promoting better health and ensuring effective environmental education — an accomplishment that saved USAG Wiesbaden more than $27,000 in energy costs.

Knowing exactly how to help customers by fully understanding the big picture and feeling empowered to do what’s required are all part of Wiesbaden Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation’s new Team Member Orientation program. “I firmly believe that by providing our new employees with a great orientation it will benefit our organization, enhance retention and foster recruitment,” said Gregory Holzinger, USAG Wiesbaden’s new FMWR director. This month new Wiesbaden FMWR employees are taking part in a day-and-a-half-long training session featuring speakers, questionand-answer sessions, role playing and a firsthand look at the many FMWR services and programs that serve service members, civilians and their families in the garrison. The orientation will be offered regularly as new employees come on board. “We want to show the employees that this is not just a job — it’s more than a job — it’s a career,” said Holzinger. “We’re using professionals from around the organization to tap into that tremendous experience and commitment. “Each garrison is a little different, has a slightly different demographic and different facilities,” said the DFMWR chief, explaining that it’s crucial for employees to see first-hand how it all comes together — “seeing it in action and having the opportunity to ask questions — which is different than the online experience. “It’s also important that each employee knows there is an opportunity for advancement and growth,” he said. “They can go from an entry-level FMWR job and advance to be the FMWR director. “We also want to show them that we take

care of our own. It sets up the employee for success. … Confidence builds itself through knowledge, and this orientation is part of the communication process,” Holzinger added. “The orientation will help speed up the process to get employees more team–oriented.” The ultimate goal is to retain valued employees and to encourage growth in the job, said Holzinger and one of the TMO facilitator’s Peter Witmer, USAG Wiesbaden’s school liaison officer. “Here’s why it’s really valuable,” said Witmer, who is one of three team leaders. “Every one of our FMWR employees serves customers and must be fully aware of the diverse services and programs available throughout the organization. “This increases our ability to support the community,” Witmer added. “And it will enhance our retention. It also builds resiliency. Knowing the correct answers and ways to assist customers is rewarding and fulfilling for an employee. There’s a significant advantage to having the knowledge of the scope of one’s organization beyond what one does on a daily basis … seeing the connectivity more effectively.” Ultimately, it comes down to providing the best service possible, Witmer and Holzinger said. “The Team Member Orientation provides for more knowledgeable employees which provides for a better level of customer service for our valued community members,” Witmer said. Wiesbaden FMWR’s new director said TMO is just one of the tools being introduced to increase the sense of belonging to the FMWR Family, encouraging retention and enhancing overall services. Wiesbaden FMWR directors will join together next month to also hone their knowledge and abilities.

24th MI gets Green Boot By Shayna Brouker

U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Public Affairs Office

Despite command team changes and a months-long process, the 24th Military Intelligence Battalion persevered to make energy efficiency and environmental friendliness a part of their daily operations. “It’s a profound accomplishment that we passed it on,” said Capt. Louis Brown, commander of D company, “the Honey Badgers.” “Because of their (Maj. Joan Sommers and Sgt. 1st Class Duane Dockstader) push it’s

been carried on by the new command team. Everyone picked up the ball and ran with it.” Garrison Commander Col. Mary Martin and Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Roy Rocco presented the battalion with their award Aug. 5. The battalion took steps to improve energy efficiency by turning off the lights before leaving the office and adding a blue recycling bin at every desk. “Germany is one of the best at energy conservation, although the U.S. is getting better at it,” said Martin. “Thank

you for your efforts. It’s a team effort to get this award.” “What might seem like a menial task is a big deal,” added Lt. Col. Ryan Roseberry, battalion commander. “[This award] is a reminder that we need to be a good tenant of the community and of Germany.” Units that receive the certification are inspected annually to ensure that they remain in compliance with the Green Boot standards. August marks antiterrorism month campaign U.S. Army Europe Public Affairs August begins Army Europe’s antiterrorism awareness month campaign and antiterrorism officials continue to emphasize efforts Soldiers, civilians and family members should take to avoid threats and lone wolves that are possibly looking for their next target. In August, Army garrisons throughout Europe will participate in Antiterrorism Awareness Month activities, which include allotted training days focusing on antiterrorism topics, social media updates and refresher courses to help community members meet annual requirements. Experts say terrorism continues to be a threat and this must be faced head on. Integrating training, education, leadership and threat awareness across the force allows leaders to present a formidable defense. A combination of world class leaders and an actively engaged community is the hallmark of the Army Europe antiterrorism program. In addition to implementing basic training methods, one of the biggest ways Army Europe prepares to combat insider threats is by implementing annual training exercises that reflect real-world scenarios, “The antiterrorism full-scale exercise program affords the garrison the opportunity to test, assess and validate their antiterrorism plan,” said antiterrorism expert Jessica Bittle. “It provides the garrison and local host nation community command and control and first

response elements a chance develop a functional interoperability by familiarizing themselves with each organization’s tactics, techniques, and procedures by working together in a training environment.” Antiterrorism officials say the local community can gain confidence in their military and host nation communities’ ability to protect them during a time of crisis by being aware of exercises and understand what their roles are during the training. Experts say, “if you see something, say something” by contacting emergency personnel or the antiterrorism office immediately. Key points leaders are emphasizing are: • Remaining vigilant in all activities, maintaining situational awareness of your surroundings at all times and taking security measures to reduce vulnerability are a necessary part of our daily lives at home as well in theaters of operation. • Commanders will ensure all military personnel

within their command are aware of the significance of the terrorist threat, reemphasize unit and personal protection measures and the reporting of suspicious activities and review assessed vulnerabilities and random antiterrorism measures. • We must maintain our awareness, report suspicious activity and not drop our guard. The strength of our defense is our people. • Every member of the Army Europe community plays an important role in preventing terrorist acts. By embedding antiterrorism principles and concepts throughout our plans and programs we protect our community from terrorists. • By understanding the indicators of potential terrorist activities, and reporting suspicious behavior to military police or local law enforcement, our community members serve as “sensors” to enhance and extend the Army protection posture. Common Access Card holders can complete the training at: https://jko.jten.mil; search and enroll in Course #JS-US007 to receive the training. Non-CAC holders can complete the training at: http://jko.jten. mil/courses/atl1/launch.html. Additionally, those requiring the annual training are able to fulfill their requirement at the Tony Bass Gym on Clay Kaserne in Wiesbaden Aug. 28, from 10 a.m. to noon.

News and features Working dog competition tests skills, builds camaraderie Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Taresha Hill Special to the Herald Union

Military and police working dog teams went nose to nose while competing in the 2015 Hawaiian Islands Working Dog Skills Challenge, hosted by the 728th Military Police Battalion, 8th Military Police Brigade, 8th Theater Sustainment Command, July 27-31. Over 25 working dog teams competed and represented the best from the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force and Honolulu Police Department. The weeklong competition tested the mental and physical stamina of both the handlers and the working dogs, driving the teams to give it their all each day. “Each event was designed to push them past a level of training they may not have experienced before,” said Sgt. 1st Class Cory Lorenz, kennel master, 520th Military Working Dog, or MWD, Detachment, 728th MP Battalion. “We wanted to push them out of their comfort zone.” One event proved particularly challenging for Sgt. Veronica Pruhs, a military working dog handler with the 520th MWD Detachment and her partner K-9 Jerry. Still considered a pup, K-9 Jerry had a difficult time navigating the obedience course, which had hundreds of doggy toys strewn about the course. Despite K-9 Jerry’s determination to play with every toy on the course, Pruhs stuck with it and finished the event. “I didn’t give up,” Pruhs laughed. Lorenz said he couldn’t be happier with the teams and their dedication in competing in this year’s challenge. “It gave them the opportunity to see their strengths and weaknesses,” said Lorenz. Events ranged from a stressshoot, to tactical and nontactical detections, a written skills test, an obedience course, handler protection and even a hardest hitting dog event, in which the K-9s were scored based on the strength of their bite by a decoy wearing a bite suit. Lastly, handlers had to ne-

gotiate an obstacle course while maintaining positive control over their K-9 counterparts. While the competition was a challenge for military working dog handler Spc. David Kmosko and K-9 Drago, 520th MWD Detachment, Kmosko said it was also a great learning experience. “You’re always learning and it’s important to tap into that knowledge that other handlers have,” said Kmosko. Kmosko also said that K-9s were important to have within the military and civilian police departments and stressed their unique capabilities. “A dog can find a hidden IED that would take a person a wrong step to find or an extremely expensive and slowmoving piece of equipment to find,” said Kmosko. Kmosko added, “You’re not going to be able to beat a dog’s nose.”

“You’re not going to be able to beat a dog’s nose.” Police Sgt. Gregory Obara, a working dog handler with HPD, also stressed the important role of K-9s and said that it was the K-9’s unique and superior ability to detect people, drugs and bombs, which helped to keep the islands safe. “The K-9 is the part that elevates the team,” said Obara. In addition to exchanging knowledge and building camaraderie, Lorenz said the competition also helped to establish connections within the working dog community. “Prior to this event, communication between the agencies was nearly nonexistent,” said Lorenz. Lorenz said this year’s competition was much larger than the one held in 2012 and added, “I hope we can build upon this and make it a tradition.” Taking first place and “Top Dog” in the competition: Sgt. Daniel Jackson and his K-9 Bbailey, 904th MWD Detachment, stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia.

For your health

Keep in step to stay active and healthy By Lisa Young, Health Educator US Army Public Health Command

Get up, get out and get moving. This is what the World Health Organization recommends as part of their global strategy on physical health and activity. Regular physical activity can reduce your risk of hypertension, diabetes and depression, and it can improve your bone health and cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness. As the summer season ends, do not let the changes in weather and daylight keep you from staying active. Commit to maintaining your health through regular activity during all the seasons of the year by not limiting your idea of physical activity. Leisure time events, transportation, occupational tasks, household chores, play, games, sports, and planned exercise throughout your daily, family and community activities all count. According to Army Col. David Bitterman, “Your work hours and family commitments may challenge you, but it is all about making a decision to take control of your own life, and sticking with it.” As a unit, a command, a Soldier or a family, the Performance Triad encourages us all to achieve 15,000 steps a day, use proper resistance training techniques and prevent injuries. Doing something convenient and that you enjoy makes staying active easier. Walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, muscle strengthening and endurance resistance training are some of the ways to be physically active. Staying physically active can increase energy, ease back pain, help you relax and sleep better, reduce risk of heart attack and type 2 diabetes and slow osteoporosis bone loss. Be sure to consult a healthcare provider so that there is no health problem or physical reason that would

limit your exercise. The following points are important to keep safe and ensure your activity is effective: • If you are walking or running, choose safe places with several different routes for variety. • Schedule time in your daily routine that will be the most consistent. • Find a partner or group of people to exercise with you. • Wear clothes that will keep you dry and comfortable. • Wear a hat — a warm knit cap in the Photo Credit: U.S. Army photo winter and a baseball Army Soldiers stay fit with a group run. cap in the summer. • Stretch the major muscle groups (back, chest, hips and legs) afterwards. tion, purchase an activity tracker to count how many Hold each stretch for 20 seconds. steps you take, the distance you go and how long it • Exercise most days of the week, but plan for at takes. Experts recommend breastfeeding as best choice for mother, baby health By Lisa Young, Health Educator US Army Public Health Command

Are you a military mom and want to keep breastfeeding your baby after you return to duty? Be encouraged by the fact that breastfeeding is the natural way to feed your baby. It advances your baby’s physical and mental growth and development, and also benefits your health. In fact, Aug. 1-7 is World Breastfeeding Week, a combined effort recognized every year in more than 120 countries to bring awareness to the benefits of breastfeeding. Many highly respected organizations, such as the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, American Public Health Association, United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund and the World Health Organization recognize breastfeeding as the best choice for a mother and her baby’s health. By breastfeeding until your baby is six months old, you: • Give your baby the best nutrition possible — your milk. • Save money. The average cost for baby formula is $100-$120 a month, about $30/can. • May miss less work. Breast milk provides natural immunities so that breastfed infants are less likely to get sick early in life.

Page 14

Herald Union

• Provide a bond that only you and your baby share, even when you are apart. • Get back in shape and lose weight faster. You burn calories when you produce milk. Exclusive breastfeeding burns an extra 300-500 calories a day! Many military moms find breastfeeding difficult when they return to work and some active duty mothers do not think it is even possible. Part of this is credited to the working conditions, deployments, lack of time and place to pump breast milk, and not being around other breastfeeding women in the military. It is clear why military and active duty moms may view breastfeeding as tough. Suggestions passed on by military moms that have been successful are: • Make breastfeeding plans before you deliver, i.e. where you are going to pump during the day and how you are going to store the milk. • Provide your supervisor with a memorandum before you have the baby explaining your breastfeeding plan for their approval. If you are going to need extra time over lunch to go feed your baby, ask for your command’s approval and support before you go on leave upon delivery of your baby. • Enlist the support of unit and community leaders, friends who are also mothers, fathers/partners, lactation consultants, pregnancy educators and online support groups.

• Research your installation and community for lactation rooms and electric pumps that you can use. The federal government and many states have laws that protect a woman’s right to breastfeed. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Women’s Health is strongly promoting breastfeeding through promotional campaigns and policy statements. Breastfeeding in public may be challenging at times, even with the growing awareness, but stay encouraged. Here are some tips for breastfeeding in public: • Slip into a women’s lounge or dressing room to breastfeed. • Use a special breastfeeding blanket around your shoulders. • Wear tops that allow easy access to your breasts. • Breastfeed your baby in a sling to make it easier to keep your baby close to you. • Practice at home so you can maintain your own personal level of privacy. • Breastfeed your baby before he or she becomes fussy so you have time to get into a comfortable place or position to feed. You can celebrate World Breastfeeding Week this year by joining an event in your local area. There are also many online resources to support your choice to breastfeed.

The man from U.N.C.L.E., Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill, right) is in one of the less dangerous moments of a secret agent’s lifestyle.

Straight Outta Compton — In 1987, five young men, using brutally honest rhymes and hardcore beats, put their frustration and anger about life in the most dangerous place in America into the most powerful weapon they had: their music. Taking us back to where it all began, “Straight Outta Compton” tells the true story of how these cultural rebels — armed only with their lyrics, swagger, bravado and raw talent — stood up to the authorities that meant to keep them down and formed the world’s most dangerous group, N.W.A. And as they spoke the truth that no one had before and exposed life in the hood, their voice ignited a social revolution that is still reverberating today. The Man From U.N.C.L.E. — A fresh take on the hugely popular 1960s television series,“The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” is set against the backdrop of the early 1960s, at the height of the Cold War, “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” centers on CIA agent Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) and KGB agent Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer). Forced to put aside longstanding hostilities, the two team up on a joint mission to stop a mysterious international criminal organization, which is bent on destabilizing the fragile balance of power through the proliferation of nuclear weapons and technology. The duo’s only lead is the daughter of a vanished German scientist, who is the key to infiltrating the criminal organization, and they must race against time to find him and prevent a worldwide catastrophe. Hitman: Agent 47 — This thriller centers on an elite assassin who was genetically engineered from conception to be the perfect killing machine, and is known only by the last two digits on the barcode tattooed on the back of his neck. He is the culmination of decades of research and forty-six earlier Agent clones — endowing him with unprecedented strength, speed, stamina and intelligence. His latest target is a mega-corporation that plans to unlock the secret of Agent 47’s past to create an army of killers whose powers surpass even his own. Teaming up with a young woman who may hold the secret to overcoming their powerful and clandestine enemies, 47 confronts stunning revelations about his own origins and squares off in an epic battle with his deadliest foe. Fantastic Four — “Fantastic Four,” a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.

There have been reports of pets being sold from breeding facilities that are not managed at the highest professional standards. Please choose your pet carefully. Make sure you check the credentials of the people selling the pet, and get proper paperwork showing shots and/ or other proof of healthy condition. For further advice, consult your Veterinarian.

Professional Services are offered by registered businesses as well as private people. To ensure a satisfactory service experience, please always ask for credentials and deny payments up front. For cleaning services, arrange for payments after a final walk-through and inspection of the clean house.
