Every year the Army Europe Youth Summer Hire Program is offered to high school and college students ranging from 14 to 22 years old. The program is geared toward giving youth in the community an opportunity to gain work experience over a sixweek period as either a laborer or clerk throughout U.S Army Garrison Wiesbaden. When asked why they became a summer hire, two young adults working for Child, Youth and School Services Sports and Fitness, Nick Harris and Andre Sterling, simultaneously agreed the monetary aspects motivated them. But for a number of summer hires and their supervisors, they gained much more. “Some of the things you accomplished include
processing over 200,000 pieces of mail, assembling 15 tons of equipment, updating continuity books, and working at DFMWR summer camps,” said Garrison Commander Col. Mary Martin at a recognition ceremony Aug. 7. “The good thing is you got lots of positive ICE comments. I hope you got a better understanding of how a garrison works.” “If it was not for them, we could not finish our mission here,” said Quintin Harvey, supervisor of postal operations. Harvey is also the supervisor of the summer hires assigned to Wiesbaden’s Postal Service Center. His appreciation for the program and the students he receives stems from the number of employees at the post office who take leave during the summer. See ‘Summer’ on page 5
