“The rich heritage of Asian-Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders spans the world and the depths of America’s history.” So reads the presidential proclamation on AsianAmerican and Pacific Islander Heritage Month by President Barack Obama. U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden held an event May 28 to recognize that contribution to the history of the world. “Like America itself, the Asian-American and Pacific Islander community draws its strength from the diversity of its many distinct cultures,” said Maj.

Vincent Lai, the guest speaker at the event. Contributions to America’s history include a long record of Asian and Pacific Islander Americans serving in the U.S. military, according to Lai, who highlighted the 442nd Regimental Combat Team during his speech. The 442nd RCT was composed of mostly JapaneseAmericans, primarily second generation, who served in World War II on the European front. It was activated on Feb. 1, 1943, and served with distinction. Its members earned numerous honors, including 21 Medals of Honor, Lai said. He also said the unit is, for its size and length of service, the most decorated unit in America’s history.

The event also featured performances by the Wiesbaden Community Island Dancers and the Hapa Hula Dancers. The Hapa Hula Dancers were led by Divina Rocco, wife of USAG Wiesbaden Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Roy Rocco, and has composed of Soldiers who volunteered to learn the dance for the event. Mrs. Rocco said she has been training Soldiers to dance at heritage events since her and her husband’s second tour in Germany, but this is the first time her volunteers were allowed to dance completely by themselves.
