Garrison holds Asian, Pacific Islander heritage event By Jacob Corbin
U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Public Affairs
“The rich heritage of Asian-Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders spans the world and the depths of America’s history.” So reads the presidential proclamation on AsianAmerican and Pacific Islander Heritage Month by President Barack Obama. U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden held an event May 28 to recognize that contribution to the history of the world. “Like America itself, the Asian-American and Pacific Islander community draws its strength from the diversity of its many distinct cultures,” said Maj.

Vincent Lai, the guest speaker at the event. Contributions to America’s history include a long record of Asian and Pacific Islander Americans serving in the U.S. military, according to Lai, who highlighted the 442nd Regimental Combat Team during his speech. The 442nd RCT was composed of mostly JapaneseAmericans, primarily second generation, who served in World War II on the European front. It was activated on Feb. 1, 1943, and served with distinction. Its members earned numerous honors, including 21 Medals of Honor, Lai said. He also said the unit is, for its size and length of service, the most decorated unit in America’s history.
Advice for newcomers
USAG Wiesbaden members give their advice to incoming personnel in Feedback on page 2.
The event also featured performances by the Wiesbaden Community Island Dancers and the Hapa Hula Dancers. The Hapa Hula Dancers were led by Divina Rocco, wife of USAG Wiesbaden Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Roy Rocco, and has composed of Soldiers who volunteered to learn the dance for the event. Mrs. Rocco said she has been training Soldiers to dance at heritage events since her and her husband’s second tour in Germany, but this is the first time her volunteers were allowed to dance completely by themselves. National Safety Month
A message from your Army leaders During the past 10 years fatal Army accidents have declined significantly, both on and off duty. That trend has persisted through years of combat operations and continues now as we remain committed on multiple continents in support of National Defense objectives. Army leaders, Soldiers and Army Civilians have worked hard to make this possible. Thank you all for ensuring that our Army remains safe and ready. June is National Safety Month and we encourage you to take this opportunity to measure the performance of your formations in rela-
tion to the 2015 Army Safety and Occupational Health Objectives. In this document, we called for reductions of 10 percent or more in fatalities and losses resulting from private motor vehicle accidents, personal injury and aviation mishaps. Though there are only a few short—yet critical—months left in the fiscal year, you still have time to make significant headway toward these goals. Opening a dialogue on National Safety Month can help you re-engage your Soldiers and Army Civilians on safety matters to end the year on a positive note. As in years past, the U.S. Army
Combat Readiness Center will release a multimedia campaign on June 1 centering on four topics: aviation safety, ground safety, driving safety and injury prevention. The campaign material, along with this year’s supporting objectives, is available at https://safety.army. mil. We invite you to leverage this information to help your Soldiers and Army Civilians evaluate their personal risk and come through the summer months safely. Thank you again for supporting National Safety Month and the Army Safety Program. By remaining safe, we remain Army Strong!

Bicycle pedals must have reflectors designed and placed to be visible from the front and rear of the bicycle during darkness. NOTE: As an exception, local national personnel are not required to wear a safety helmet when riding a bicycle on U.S. military installations in Germany. It is, however, highly recommended that they do so.

Restoring a historical trail in honor of a World War I Soldier, hero Commentary by Jeremiah Gerber Special to the Herald Union
On Oct. 6, 1918, one Soldier helped change the outcome of World War I. On May 9, 14 Boy Scouts from Troop 107, in Wiesbaden, Germany, and their friends honored his memory. Sgt. Alvin York, a onetime conscientious objector, almost single-handedly captured 132 German soldiers behind enemy lines and saved the Argonne offensive. York’s bravery, strength and sacrifice led me to choose improving the Sgt. York Historic Trail in Chatel Chehery, France, as my Eagle Scout Project. Thirteen of us spent nine hours laying seven tons of gravel, chopping roots, fixing signs and widening the trail. We laid 175 meters of gravel, cut over 150 roots and widened 100 meters of trail. We also fixed two sign posts, with the aid of only one wheelbarrow, 10 shovels and a few rakes. The trail itself follows in the footsteps of thenCorporal Alvin York through the Argonne, showing firsthand what the Argonne offensive must have been like, minus all the bullets and shells going off. A patrol of only 17 doughboys was sent to scout German machine gun positions which had halted the American advance north of Varennes. Instead, the eight surviving Americans led by York fought off a German bayonet charge, silencing the machine guns and clearing the route. York received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions. Thanks to the generous support of Col. Douglas Mastriano and the Sgt. York Discovery Expedition organization, seven tons of gravel was unloaded at

We also visited the American monument at Montfaucon, the 14-18 Museum in Romagne and the lost village of Vauqois to earn the Boy Scout MeuseArgonne Historic Trail patch. If you are ever in the area of Chatel Chehery, do yourself a favor and check out the trail. It’s a relaxing walk thorough a beautiful forest in a secluded rural part of France. Claims: what you should know while you are unpacking
Herald Union
Special to the Herald Union
It’s every Soldier and family member’s PCS nightmare: the priceless family heirloom or your favorite recliner arrived to Germany in pieces or didn’t arrive at all. If you just came to Wiesbaden on a PCS move, or are on your way to a new duty station, the claims process and your right to reimbursement for items lost or damaged during shipping can be confusing. It is important to understand the process and the deadlines because missteps in these areas could result in no payment for your claim. While the movers are delivering and unpacking your shipment, it is important to pay attention and note any obvious damage immediately. Prior to departing, the movers will have you sign a DD Form 1840 or an equivalent. Before signing, you should note all damage in the appropriate spaces. For the description of the item you should be as specific as possible, noting important factors such as the brand, model and any features that may distinguish the item (for example is your television a tube TV, LCD, LED, or plasma?). The description of the damage should be specific as well. Take pictures to help you substantiate the claim when it is time to file it. Red Cross gets a Green Boot By Jacob Corbin
U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Public Affairs
The American Red Cross Wiesbaden Station became the most recent organization on U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden to receive a Green Boot. The Green Boot program recognizes those units and organizations that decrease their energy use and ecological footprint and is focused on changing the culture of units regarding energy consumption and resource management. “[The Red Cross] is the smallest unit certified so far,” said Tomasz Filatow, USAG Wiesbaden energy manager. “[They may not have] the biggest savings potential in numbers, but they have a huge attitude of ‘we can always do something better.’” Filatow said to earn a Green Boot, units must complete a certification process that starts with a checklist focusing on compliance requirements in various areas including awareness, energy conservation, transportation and office waste reduction. According to Station Manager Bethany Haworth, her organization’s Green Boot was a volunteer-driven
accomplishment. “We have a couple of volunteers (Elena Samokhval and Lisa Ross) who are very environmentally conscious,” Haworth said. “When they got here they began working on it with the Red Cross immediately. They were really ahead of the game.” Haworth said another volunteer, student Leah Rojas, was also behind their “Green Boot information board,” which featured information on energy savings, waste reducPhoto by Jacob Corbin tion and recycling. “They (the Red U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Commander Col. Latvia: A trip through history Story and photos by Caitlin McGinn Special to the Herald Union
A visit to Latvia feels like a trip back in time. It is filled with lush landscapes, castle ruins and beautiful cities and villages. Upon arrival in Rīga, Latvia’s capital, you will be enchanted by the charming, compact medieval city. Cobbled narrow streets and alleys open into squares of ancient churches with wooden spires, sidewalk cafés, amber shops and a cosmopolitan selection of restaurants and bars. As you wander the city you will eventually find your way through the park and into the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Art Nouveau neighborhood. This special area of gorgeously hued and styled buildings, with romantic and natureinspired motifs, is one of the largest collections of Art Nouveau architecture in the world. Gauja National Park, east of Rīga, has many outdoor activities and is home to some of Latvia’s most intriguing historical sites. The town of Sigulda is a good starting place for the region and is easily accessible by public transport. Sigulda is a small town surrounded by silver birch and pine trees. It is known for its castles: the New Castle, a mid-19th century manor that to this day houses local government offices; and behind it is the spectacular ruin of the Livonian Order castle. While exploring the 13th century grey stone castle you will see a stage where performances are hosted in the summer. From the ancient wall you will get a glimpse of the bright red brick Turaida castle on a hill
in the distance beckoning you to visit. This Livonian castle is quite different from the Sigulda one. It has been extensively restored and the excellent museum inside describes its history and restoration. It has towers and sections of its wall. Climbing to the top of the main tower, you get a real sense of the struggles that the people who lived here went through. Turaida museum reserve has outbuildings and a lovely old Latvian-style wooden chapel. Nearby, a special tree honors the romantic-tragic figure of the “Rose of Turaida.” Legend has it that a young girl from Turaida was in love with a gardener from Sigulda castle. One day a jealous soldier tricked the girl into meeting him at the cave (which you can also visit) where she usually met her lover. To protect her chastity, she tricked him into killing her instead of violating her. She is beloved for her bravery and innocence in the face of an evil intruder. Jūrmala is a region of seaside resort towns with traditional old shabby-chic wooden houses next to modern-day spas. During the summer locals and tourists flock to the beaches and for medicinal spa treatments, while it is a place for quiet contemplation during the off-season. In Western Latvia, Ventspils is a bustling port city with its own Livonian Order castle, an outdoor sports park, and a quaint old-town. Whether you are looking for a thriving capital city, to explore ancient castles or to relax on the beach, A trip to Latvia offers travelers the chance to Latvia has it all. visit numerous historical sites and landmarks.

USAG Wiesbaden — Wackernheim, Wiesbaden Middle schoolers paddle forward with friendship Story and photos by Shayna Brouker
U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Public Affairs Office
Water sports, a little friendly competition and food brought together teens from Wiesbaden Middle School and their German counterparts during a German-American friendship event May 27. More than 40 WMS students studying German combined with English language students from the Erich Kästner-Schule Wiesbaden paddled side-byside in 40-foot long dragon boats on the Schierstein Harbor with help from professional coaches from the Wassersportverein (water sport club) Schierstein. The event was intended to enhance friendship and conversation between the teens, said Peter Witmer, Wiesbaden Department of Defense Dependents Schools school liaison officer. The idea sparked from the annual military orientation for DoDDS teachers, which this year included teachers from area German schools, he explained.
“It was fun for both sides,” said Dirk Mlaka, principal of Erich Kästner-Schule Wiesbaden. “Each row of German and American students had opportunities to get to know each other.” “It was really fun,” confirmed eighth-grader Jordyn Aaron. “Racing was my favorite part — it was really motivating to race against my classmates.” The event included a safety briefing, practice paddling in the boats, and a race — complete with German and American flags flying behind the boats — followed by a barbecue. School officials hope to make it an annual event, said Witmer, and the students agree. “On the way home on the bus, I asked the students if we should try to repeat this next year and the response I got was a thundering, ‘Yes’!” said Roswith Timbrell, a German language instructor for the middle school and Wiesbaden High School. “What a great way for our students to get to know each other. I hope to keep the contact going with the German/ English classes.”
Paddlers prepare to launch for their race as goslings swim nearby in the Schierstein Harbor.

Hainerberg students raise $4,700 Principal agrees to strand herself on roof in celebration By Jacob Corbin
U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Public Affairs Office
When the principal of Hainerberg Elementary School challenged her students to raise $4,500 through the Box Tops for Education program, she offered them a unique and compelling reward—the chance to strand her on her school’s roof for one day. The students delivered, collecting nearly 47,000 box tops and surpassing their goal. So on the morning of May 29, the Principal Debbie Parks found herself heralded on to her school’s roof. Luckily for her, the roof was prepared for her in advance complete with desk, chairs, paperwork and appointments. And to ensure she had no second thoughts her keys were removed. “I thought I’d have time to get a lot of work done,” she said. “But once community members found out where the door (to the roof) was, I ended up having a few conferences.” She wasn’t alone though, as

Prepare for summer with Outdoor Rec By Karl Weisel
U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Marketing Office
With summer right around the corner, many are making plans to get out and explore Europe. Wiesbaden Outdoor Recreation staff members are standing by to help with advice, trip-planning and equipment rental. “We’re always exploring — trying to find new programs,” said Ivan Grant, programming manager with Wiesbaden Outdoor Recreation. “All you have to do is sit back, relax ... the staff will take care of you and make sure you enjoy whatever trip you decide to take.” Wiesbaden military community members have a wide range of trips to choose from in the coming weeks including Budapest, Vienna and Salzburg June 18-22; a Bavarian getaway June 20-21 (with a bike tour of Munich); Krakow, Poland, June 18-22; grooving at the Ascona Jazz Festival in Switzerland June 25-28; Strasbourg June 27, July 25 or Aug. 29; Italy and Greece Mini Cruise July 2-7; Tuscany to the Riviera July 2-6; Prague July 11-12 or Aug. 15-16; London July 17-19; and Neuschwanstein Castle July 25-26. Likewise, August is packed with trips ranging from scuba and
fishing in Rovinj, Croatia, Aug. 6-10; Edinburgh, Amsterdam and Brussels Aug. 6-10; Copenhagen Aug. 14-16 and the Brussels Beer Fest Aug. 29. “Right now Croatia is a hot destination,” Grant said, adding that since first offering a trip to Croatia more than three years ago, participation has increased almost tenfold. “We’re looking at offering trips for families with infants and trips for adults without younger family members to better accommodate our customers,” said Grant, recognizing that while families want to see as much of Europe as possible while stationed overseas, others prefer traveling without children. Americans interested in hunting or fishing while in Germany can also get started with a visit to Outdoor Recreation — a German fishing course is Aug. 1-2 and 8-9, and a German hunting course will be held Aug. 25 to Oct. 24. “By law, you have to have a license to hunt in Germany,” Grant said. Community members might also want to join Outdoor Recreation for paintball at McCully Support Center in Wackernheim during the summer months. Upcoming dates are June 6, 20, July 4, 18, Aug. 1, 15, 29, Sept. 19, Oct. 3, 17 and 31 from 10 a.m. to 4

For your health
Make small changes to fit exercise into your day By Justine Springer US Army Public Health Command
We all know that physical activity and exercise are important for overall health. However, many people find themselves struggling to get the recommended amount of physical activity in a day. Research has shown a minimum of 10,000 steps per day is necessary maintain a healthy lifestyle. Despite these recommendations, however, many Americans are only reaching approximately 6,000 steps. Common complaints include not having enough time to exercise with busy schedules and long workdays as reasons for why individuals do not exercise. For most, it is often hard to find an extended period of time to get physically active. The good news is that small changes can make a big difference over time. It’s not necessary to get all your physical activity in one burst. Finding time in your busy day to fit in an hour or two of physical activity at one time is often unrealistic. Incorporating physical activity into your routine in shorter intervals, even a few 15-20 minutes
walks, is much more manageable and sustainable in the long term. Over time, these small changes will add up toward an ultimate physical activity goal. The U.S. Department of Agriculture, the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Heart Association have many suggestions as to how to incorporate physical activity into daily life. Here are some quick suggestions of things to try: • Take a walk during lunch or other break or have a walking meeting instead of sitting in a conference room or colleague’s office. • Take a walk with the family after dinner instead of turning on the TV. • Walk the dog instead of just letting the dog out in the yard. • Walk up and down the soccer or football field while your child is playing instead of just sitting on the sidelines. • Get outside and play with your children by throwing a ball around or playing tag for 10 minutes. • Park your car in a space or location that is farther away from the office door. Some people have had their desks converted into a standing workstation
and alternate between sitting and standing throughout the day. To keep things interesting, try different activities. Try hiking or biking on a local trail. Join an exercise or yoga class. Try working out to a video. Go on a skiing or snowboarding trip. In the winter, go sledding or snow tubing when it snows. In the summer, take advantage of the local pool and go swimming with the family or a friend. Play a sport, like tennis, basketball, volleyball or racquetball. The key is to pick activities that are interesting to you. R e m e m b e r, s m a l l changes add up. Any exercise is better than Smaller bouts of exercise in your day may be no exercise. into it and they can be taken without anyone knowing. Unfortunately, there is no quick fix for depression. Although there is some evidence that having low levels of certain nutrients (for example, folate, B-12, calcium, vitamin D, iron, selenium, zinc, and N-3 fatty acids) contribute to some mood problems, there is very little evidence that dietary supplements help most people who are depressed. Scientists have found that vitamins can be helpful for some women with hormone-related depression symptoms, and for those who do not have a nutritional deficiency or depression, multiingredient vitamin supplementation has been shown to improve mood and reduce stress and anxiety. Despite evidence that vitamin supplementation can be helpful for people without depression, the Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s dietary guidelines for Americans advise that nutrient needs be met primarily through the food that you eat. These guidelines only recommend supplement use in addition to a nutrient-dense diet if you are over the age of 50, a woman of childbearing age or if you have dark skin or are not exposed to enough sunlight. The Food
and Drug Administration warns against taking in too many vitamins since there are upper limits of safety. At the end of the day, taking supplements without a healthcare provider’s help may result in wasted money or time because it is hard to tell the difference between a mood disorder and normal, everyday sadness related to a stressful situation. The best person to discuss changes in mood is your primary healthcare provider, who can help you determine if your mood change or problem is the result of depression, a normal situational response or a physical problem. If they do find that you have a mood disorder, like depression, the current gold standard treatment for depression is a type of therapy called cognitive-behavioral therapy along with a prescription antidepressant. Additionally, you may want to have lab tests to check for a deficiency and discuss the use of vitamins or perhaps herbal remedies with your provider. Ultimately, only you and your healthcare team (which may include your primary healthcare provider and a behavioral health specialist) can make the best decision regarding nutritional supplementation and treatment planning for mood concerns.

An uptight and by-the-book cop tries to protect the outgoing widow of a drug boss as they race through Texas pursued by crooked cops and murderous gunmen in “Hot Pursuit.”
San Andreas — A sudden and destructive magnitude earthquake that registers 9.5 on the Richter scale leaves California in peril as it tears through the state, leaving a horrible path of destruction in its wake as it heads to San Francisco, where scientists have predicted it will cause the most damage. As it rips apart the West Coast bit by bit, Ray (Dwayne Johnson), a rescue chopper pilot, saves his estranged wife Emma (Carla Gugino), after the restaurant she was in at the top of a high rise building starts to collapse. He then gets a call from their daughter Blake (Alexandra Daddario), who is in San Francisco trapped in a car in a garage, abandoned by her mother’s new boyfriend, Daniel (Ioan Gruffudd). Ray and Emma try to get to San Francisco to save their daughter before it’s too late. Spy — Susan Cooper is an unassuming, deskbound CIA analyst, and the unsung hero behind the Agency’s most dangerous missions. But when her partner falls off the grid and another top agent is compromised, she volunteers to go deep undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer, and prevent a global crisis. Little Boy — “Little Boy” is a powerful and moving film about a little boy who is willing to do whatever it takes to bring his dad home from World War II alive. The heartwarming story will capture your heart and lift your spirits as it reveals the indescribable love a little boy has for his father and the love a father has for his son. Set in the 1940s, “Little Boy” is an instant cinematic classic that captures the wonder of life through the eyes of an 8- year-old little boy. Written and directed by Smithsonian Institute Award winning director Alejandro Monteverde, “Little Boy” highlights themes of faith, hope and love in the face of adversity. Jurassic World — Twenty-two years after the events of “Jurassic Park” (1993), Isla Nublar now features a fully functioning dinosaur theme park, Jurassic World, as originally envisioned by John Hammond. After 10 years of operation and visitor rates declining, in order to fulfill a corporate mandate, a new attraction is created to re-spark visitor’s interest, which backfires horribly.
