Polizei nab break-in suspect By Karl Weisel

Crestview Housing residents should rest easier knowing that a suspect has been apprehended following a series of storage room thefts. German police caught the suspect during a patrol in the early morning hours of Oct. 21, growing suspicious as they observed the individual walking through the housing area with a locked bike on his shoulder. After being searched, several additional stolen objects were found in his backpack.

Polizei Oberkommissarin Birthe Fink, 4th Precinct operations officer, said after obtaining a court order, German police searched the suspect’s apartment and basement and discovered several thousand euros worth of stolen property, including everything from electrical items to U.S. military backpacks, credit cards to coin collections. “There have been no break-ins reported since the apprehension,” said Fink, pointing to the excellent cooperation between the German Polizei and the See Break-in on page 3

ed: Could you warn people to be careful of the wild boars at night? We just moved here a few months ago, and last night we had our first encounter with the wild boars in Aukamm Housing. I took one of our dogs out a little after 9 a.m. and when we returned to the building there was a group of about five or six of them standing right next to the building snorting at us. The safest thing for myself and our dog to do was to wait next to the trash bin/cars for them to leave back behind the buildings before we were able to come inside.

Response: Dakota, thank you for making your fellow residents aware that wild boar are an issue in Germany near forests and open park areas — particularly during the colder months when food is scarcer in the wild. As in past years, everyone is advised that these creatures are indeed wild — and should not be considered as pets to be approached or fed. Pet owners are asked to please always keep their animals leashed when outside and to stay away from any wild boar that may have strayed into our housing areas. Residents are also asked to report wild boar sightings to the Directorate of Public Works Customer Service Center to let them know — especially if boar have dug holes under fences or otherwise damaged property. Please call civ (0611) 143-548-4357 for assistance.

Retirees and counselors

Bryan E. asked: The Military Family Life Counselor who shares her expertise with me informed me that U.S. Army retirees are no longer eligible under the MFLC program per her stateside-based headquarters, so she had to discontinue her assistance. Can you please confirm that Army retirees are no longer

authorized to leverage MFLC? If so, I’d recommend the Wiesbaden Community Information Exchange be updated to reflect this restriction and any other media used to publicize the MFLC resource. This resource is in some ways more meaningful than the fitness center or dining facility, both accessible by retirees and our civilian workforce — an unfortunate loss to the community’s civilians and retirees, together about one-half of U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden’s total population. Response: Sir, unfortunately it is true that civilians and retirees are not eligible for the services provided by MFLCs. Please note that civilians and retirees are only eligible for 180 days after active duty or Department of Defense Civilian Expeditionary Workforce service. While there has been no change for retirees, the policy is now being enforced. We will communicate this message through various means to ensure understanding and to educate the community on who is eligible. So that you are aware and can perhaps share within your sphere of influence, chaplains are a resource as is the Employee Assistance Program, which is somewhat similar to the MFLC program. Thanks again, for helping us make your fellow retirees aware of this policy.

Getting inside scoop from DoDDS champion By Mackinley Bullock Special to the Herald Union

How does it feel to be a champion? I have been asked this question ever since my team, the Lady Warriors, won the Division 1 Department of Defense Dependents Schools-Europe Volleyball Championship on Nov. 1. My answer is the same every time; it feels unreal. Our win was a different kind of win. It wasn’t just for our team. It was for our coaches, our fellow students, the community and all of the people who came out and supported us at every game. As my coach says, “It takes a community to raise a volleyball team,” and the community definitely supported us throughout our undefeated 17-0 season. As Europeans grew closer, the pressure was very high for all of the girls on our team. After having a perfect regular season we all felt the need to keep our perfect record all the way through the Europeans. During the practices before Europeans our coach made us work on our basic skills and kept telling us that our regular season record was gone. We were 0-0 now. “The girls on this team have a completely different chemistry together.

the board against us, we began to feel defeated. Our coach called a time-out while Naples held a 10-2 lead on us in a 15-point game. Frustrated and rattled, we looked to our coach as she told us to settle down and to go out and fight for the championship title. As we took the court, I looked at my teammates and knew there was no way we were going to give up. We wanted to win this game. Before I knew it we were ahead of Naples with a 15-14 lead. As my teammate Leah Rojas served an ace, solidifying our victory, the gym erupted into screams, cheers and tears. Talking about it now still gives me chills. I can still remember the pride I felt in myself and in my team as we were called up to receive our first place plaque during the award ceremony. We will never forget the teammates we shared it with and the challenges we overcame. Our motto throughout the volleyball season was “one team, one dream” — a testament to placing the team above one’s own personal goals. Expedited airport screening

The Transportation Security Administration has extended its expedited screening benefits to students of the four U.S. service academies — the U.S. Military Academy, Naval Academy, Coast Guard Academy and Air Force Academy. Last year the TSA extended its expedited screening benefits to all U.S. Armed Forces service members, including those serving in the U.S. Coast Guard, Reserves and National Guard. The program allows participating flyers to leave on their shoes, light outerwear and belt, keep their laptop in its case and keep compliant liquids/gels in a carry-on bag while being screened at more than 120 participating airports and flying on 11 major airlines. Service members/ students should use their Department of Defense ID card to obtain the expedited screening. The TSA has extended the expedited screening benefits to civilian DoD employees who follow an “opt-in” process online. For more information visit tsa.gov or defensetravel.dod.mil. Young and old, white and black, Sailor and Soldier — no matter their background, all veterans share a common bond that cannot be broken. Such was David Cain’s experience when greeting World War II veterans at Frankfurt Airport, a story he retold during U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden’s Veterans Day ceremony Nov. 7 at Memorial Park. “Though I was more than half a century their junior, I felt at ease among these members of the greatest generation,” said Cain, post commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 27. “We laughed and joked about how this plane ride was significantly better than the last one, and how the cool damp weather wasn’t any different the first time around as if I had shared those experiences. Perhaps my comfort around them was

due to their grandfatherly stature or their jet lag, but I believe it reflects the bond among veterans.” More than 20 million veterans live in America, said Col. Mary Martin, U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden commander, during her speech. Others are prisoners of war or missing in action while families await their safe return, or simply their remains so they can gain closure, she said. “Freedom truly is not free. Some people get to go about their daily lives, some of them not doing much of anything, and don’t think about those paying the ultimate sacrifice,” she said. “When someone comes up and tells you ‘Thank you for your service,’ don’t be afraid to tell them our story. We have a great history.” VFW Post 27, “Watch on the Rhein,” boasts almost 3,000 members, the largest VFW chapter in the world, according to officials.

Visitors might have thought the U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden was getting a jump start on St. Patrick’s Day this month as more and more of the distinctive Green Boot signs began appearing around the community. “It’s an honor for us to come and give these,” said Col. Five Wiesbaden agencies were the latest to achieve Green Boot status after a concentrated effort to meet the garrison’s Green Boot requirements and to help change the culture in their organization toward more environmental awareness and response, according to Maj. Recognizing the strength of military families By Mackinley Bullock Special to the Herald Union

Every day on every news channel you see countless stories about war, Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines and the sacrifices they make to protect our country. While these brave men and women shouldn’t go unnoticed, there are some people behind the scenes that shouldn’t either: their families. Spouses, children, and family members alike make just as many sacrifices as the service members themselves. Even though they may not be put into dangerous situations, their courage, fortitude and resilience is tested throughout the times that their loved one is deployed. The month of November is dedicated to Military Family Appreciation Month. Around the country and around the world U.S. military installations are planning activities to celebrate the military family. I really appreciate the life that I am given over here and have really learned how to live like the Europeans. The benefits of travel and adventure are often outweighed by the dangerous deployments and many months of separation. It is important that the sacrifices of our military and their families are properly recognized. Outstanding service: By Karl Weisel

U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Public Affairs Office

U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden leaders celebrated outstanding customer service and looked to the future during the quarterly Recognition Event Oct. 31 at the Wiesbaden Fitness Center. “I want to thank everyone for all of your hard work — we appreciate everything you do every day to take care of our Soldiers and their families,” said USAG Wiesbaden Command Sgt. Maj. Roy Rocco. Before recognizing the various teams and individuals for outstanding service and contributions to the garrison mission, Col. Mary Martin, USAG Wiesbaden’s commander, said she is looking forward to an upcoming off-site for garrison leaders that will look at “what we have to do to restructure our vision and our mission to better support the Soldiers and families here in Wiesbaden.” The garrison commander also shared news about plans for a garrison-wide Organization Day to be held next April. First up among honorees were members of Wiesbaden’s Army Community Service, winners of the USAG Wiesbaden Team Excellence Award. The ACS staff accepted the trophy from last quarter’s winners — members of the Wiesbaden Postal Service Center. ACS staff members recognized included Jan Meert, Leary Henry, Annikka Trabucco, Earl McFarland, Sara Clow, Matt Golonka, Ann Cooper, Mary Cheney, Lori Susi, Erin Mosman, Michelle Stosich and Julie Wahlers. ACS was cited as a “can-do team — constantly innovative and always reaching out to the community stakeholders with an array of programs,” said

Chief Warrant Officer 5 Mark Gaston knew the day eventually had to come, despite his resistance. That historic day was Nov. 7 at the Wiesbaden Army Airfield at Clay Kaserne when Gaston landed and taxied his military aircraft to mark his final fight and 10,640 hours of flying. “I wanted to close it out successfully,” said Gaston to those who came to honor the momentous last mission, giving credit and thanks to coworkers. “I’ve worked with some great people. There have been lots of flights … some good and some bad. This is a great way to close out a career.” At first Gaston was merely trying to make it to retirement. But along the way he realized he enjoyed going to work. “I was chomping at the bit to get to 20 years, but

During his career he has flown seven types of aircraft, configured 15 different ways, with more than 500 pilots, in 50 countries, he said. “I’m very fortunate to have had such a job and gotten to where I am today,” he said. And while flying for the U.S. Army has a variety of adventures, Gaston’s major boast was that such a successful career was accomplished having been married to the same wife for 25 years and being the father of two sons. Gaston officially retires Dec. 31 to put the capstone on a well-enjoyed and fulfilling career. “I’ve been very fortunate to be able to come to work and enjoy what I do,” said Gaston, “no runs, no drips, no errors,” “You have made us look good for 30-something years,” said Norbert Violette, Wiesbaden Army Airfield operations manager.

USAG Wiesbaden — Wackernheim, Wiesbaden ‘Little C.H.A.M.P.S.’ Book gives voice to military youths Story and photo by Shayna Brouker

U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Public Affairs Office

Between moving every few years to new schools, activities and friends and weathering long deployments, it’s not always easy being a military child. A new book — “Little C.H.A.M.P.S.,” which stands for Child Heroes Attached to Military Personnel — gives military children the words to process such trying times. Author Debbie Fink and the USO presented the book and program including singing, dancing and a special message from first lady Michelle Obama to students at Aukamm and Hainerberg Elementary Schools Nov. 3-6. Fink, an educator and entertainer, introduced the characters in the book, who each represent a branch of service. They sang each branch’s service song, accompanied by Fink fiddling along on her violin and the kids making the American sign language sign for “go Army champs,” “go Navy champs,’” and so on. The program concluded with a dance along to the book’s signature song. Fink wrote the book with her daughter, Jennifer, once a volunteer at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Jennifer was inspired to write the book after witnessing profound anxiety in children of wounded troops for whom she cared. With the help of more than 100 mili-

tary organizations, Department of Defense psychologists and educators and personnel from all branches who weighed in and offered critiques, they created a “heavily vetted” curriculum designed to show thanks, build bridges and help military children feel understood. “This book expresses gratitude for the challenges and sacrifices military kids make for freedom. We want to provide them with the coping tools for military-connected challenges,” said Fink. “And as civilians, it was clear there’s a huge gap and kids are struggling with not being understood by their teachers and peers.” That’s part of the reason she decided to title the book “Little C.H.A.M.P.S” instead of the traditional term “brats.” The word is in fact an acronym from the British military — “British Regiment Attached Traveler.” And she wanted the term to resonate with civilians who might not understand the term “brats,” though it is considered a badge of honor among military youths. “This book helps you deal with the challenges of being a military child,” Principal Barbara Mueller explained to the students. “Sometimes it’s easy and sometimes it’s hard.” “It was everything,” said Elijah Torres, a first-grader. The tour made stops at military installations in South Korea, Germany and Italy, reaching approximately 6,000 military children. Each “champ” and educator received a free copy of the book, thanks to a donation from the USO.

Elizabeth Thorton-Bremer’s third-grade Hainerberg Elementary School German immersion class can now check off Newman Village from its to-do list. The class’s wish, with a bonus stop at the Clay Airfield, was granted with the help of the school liaison officer Oct. 30. It was the tour students in the German language and culture course desired to do the most. The tour received “21 stickers, and it’s only 12 of us,” said Grayson Richardson, explaining that each class member voted and used stars — having received five each — to indicate the tours of choice. The tour started at the ancient well in Newman Village where the group gathered with Molly Bompane, U.S. Army Europe chief curator, who described

Things wrapped up in the housing area, and the class moved on to the airfield where they were met by Chief Warrant Officer 2 Ray Smith and Pvt. Anthony Brown of Company G, 52nd Aviation Regiment, for a close-up look at a Blackhawk helicopter. While an expected highlight for the pupils was playing in the cockpit, they were also excited to learn from Smith that Vice President Joe Biden once flew in the very same aircraft. “These small tours are awesome fun. I like getting the kids out here,” said Smith, “I wish I had this opportunity as a kid. I might have become a pilot sooner.”

Prevent foodborne illness By Lt. Col. Steve Lawrence U.S. Army Public Health Command

Ben Franklin once said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” and that certainly is true today as it was in Ben’s time. The United States has one of the safest food supply systems in the world but that doesn’t mean it is perfect. Most service members are a well-traveled group and have eaten in countries that have differing food safety standards; some countries have no food standards at all. Gastrointestinal illness is one of the many repercussions that can afflict the service member who ate food from a street vendor selling the local specialty. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that one in six Americans get sick every year as a result of foodborne illness; 128,000 are hospitalized; and approximately 3,000 die of foodborne diseases. Young children and adults over 65 years are most likely to be hospitalized with severe complications or even death as a result of foodborne illness. Salmonella, Norovirus, Clostridium and Campylobacter are the pathogens most commonly implicated in outbreak investigations. Salmonella is a bacteria commonly found in farm animals like poultry.

Many outbreaks can be linked to undercooked poultry and eggs but also other commodities such as fruits and vegetables have been linked to Salmonella foodborne outbreaks. The illness causes fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea and can last up to one week in duration. Most people recover quickly without antibiotics. Norovirus is the most common food poisoning sickness found in the United States. The CDC estimates that approximately 58 percent of all identified food outbreaks are caused by this virus. Salad ingredients and shellfish are the commodities most commonly associated with Norovirus. In addition to eating contaminated food and water, person-to-person contact or touching contaminated surfaces can lead to this sickness. Typical clinical symptoms of Norovirus infection are nausea, vomiting, cramps and diarrhea and can last anywhere from one to three days. Clostridium perfringens is a bacteria found in the environment as well as the intestines of people and animals. Most cases of clostridium are caused by improperly cooked meats, meat products and gravy. Typical symptoms of this type of food poisoning include abdominal cramps and watery diarrhea that last for only 24 hours, however milder signs can last up to a couple

Wiesbaden’s very own 2nd Signal Brigade started a new program this month with the goal of building camaraderie, confidence, and resiliency. Sponsored by the Brigade’s Sexual Harassment / Assault Response & Prevention Program, the series consists of two main events. The first of which is a movie night at the Tony Bass Auditorium on Clay Kaserne. Open to the whole community, the concept is to get Soldiers, civilians and families out for a fun event that involves social interaction. Often offering free food, movie night is a chance to relax, while building community cohesion. The second part of this series includes free self defense classes

taught in the Tony Bass Multipurpose Facility. These classes are intended to build confidence in one’s ability to protect themselves and are available to anyone at any experience level. According to Sgt. 1st Class Carlos Negron, 2nd Signal Brigade Sexual Assault Response Coordinator, and Mr. Hy Taylor, 2nd Signal Brigade’s victim advocate, “The collateral benefit of holding a self defense class is, while you have a captive and attentive audience, we can provide them tools to increase awareness, build confidence to act and intercede, and provide a means to extricate oneself from a potentially dangerous situation.” The next movie night is scheduled for November 20th starting at 1800 in the Tony Bass Auditorium. This event is open to all Soldiers, Family members, and Civilians in the Wiesbaden military community.

Army Soldier Show offers messages of strength, resilience Story and photos by Shayna Brouker

T

he day Spc. Kiari Mhoon decided to join the Army, he opened the fridge and saw no food for him and his sisters. Someone has to step up and it has to be me, he thought. So he enlisted as an infantryman in 2012 — “to take care of my family” — and a few years later the childhood church singer and dancer found his way to the Soldier Show auditions. Today, he takes care of another family: the Army Family. “I don’t do it for me, but for other people,” he said. “There are times when it’s hard and we’re tired, but to see the glow of the audience afterward … [our performance] is the last thing they’re going to remember. I want to leave them smiling.” And smile they did during the Soldier Show’s performance of “Stand Strong” Nov. 5 and 6, which packed the Taunus Theater. The 90-minute show featured adaptations of modern hit songs such as

Page 16

Avicii’s “Wake Me Up” as well as past chart-toppers such as the Beatles’ “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” a nod to the role music has played in sustaining the spirits of troops throughout the decades — all the while depicting the hardships of Army life: deployments, separation, sexual harassment and suicide. This is the first year the show performed downrange, in Afghanistan and Kuwait. Many of the performers wear combat patches themselves. “You feel like you’re alone,” recalled Spc. Darwin Crooks, a combat veteran, performer and Army brat. “Us entertaining — it brings a piece of America to them. And they have an outlet to let it all out if they’re missing their family.” This year’s theme, “Stand Strong,” reinforced that sentiment. “The show has a really strong message that you’re never alone,” said Crooks. “I can guarantee you’ll be laughing and crying. We were all crying [during some of the rehearsals].” The original Soldier Show harkens to World War I, when a then-sergeant Irving

Berling produced the first Broadway play cast completely with Soldiers in 1914. The modern show, started in 1984, travels worldwide to installations to give a morale boost and motivation to Soldiers and families. One hundred years later, its mission and motto is still to provide entertainment “for the Soldier, by the Soldier.” “This is my first Soldier Show, and it was a really good tearjerker,” said Annmarie Smith, an Army spouse of 30 years. “Very lively. I liked the ‘Happy’ song.” The show appealed to audience members young and old. “I liked it, especially when they did the cool trick,” said Abi Flores, 7, referring to the first number’s break dance moves. Garrison Commander Col. Mary Martin and Command Sgt. Maj. Roy Rocco gave plaques to the cast on stage. “Thank you for this wonderful performance and message to stand strong. Strong Soldiers, Strong Teams,” Martin said. The Soldier Show performs in Korea before concluding the tour and returning to Army Entertainment Division headquarSpc.
