Rabbit holes

Rebekah K. asked: “I called about dangerous rabbit holes around and under our quarter’s patio and grass area. Two of the holes are big enough that my 5-year-old could fall into them; the third hole is often hidden by the grass but is big enough for an adult foot to fit into it. These holes are dangerous for children and for injury. Can something please be done to stop this? Response: Thank you, Rebekah, for submitting your comments via the Interactive Customer Evaluation system.

The Housing Office sent an engineer technician to look at the rabbit holes and the Directorate of Public Works’ Operations and Maintenance Branch was scheduled to have the holes filled in.

Appointment system

John S. commented: I had the opportunity today to test out the new appointment system at the Vehicle Registration Office and can only say that it was a great improvement from the customer perspective. With a little bit of prior planning, not only was I able to save myself the personal aggravation of long waiting times, but the return of investment to the government in productivity by getting me back to work quickly was significant. Response: Thanks for the very positive feedback, John. Glad to hear the appointment

system is helping customers accomplish this process faster and more smoothly.

October is Disability Employment Awareness Month The U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy leads National Disability Employment Awareness Month each October to educate everyone about disability employment issues and to celebrate the many and varied contributions of America’s workers with disabilities. Congress enacted a law in 1945 declaring the first week in October each year “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week.” In 1962 the word “physically” was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities. In 1988 Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name to National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

“We all have a role to play in — and benefit to gain from — increasing opportunities for meaningful employment for people with disabilities,” said Kathy Martinez, assistant secretary of labor for disability employment policy, upon announcing this year’s National Disability Employment Awareness Month theme, which is “Expect. Employ. Empower.” This year’s theme captures the idea that advancing disability employment is about much more than just hiring. It’s about creating a continuum of inclusion. And the first step on this continuum is expectation, she said. “U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden is proud to be a part of this year’s National Disability Employment Awareness Month,”

said Ron Vitiello, USAG Wiesbaden Equal Employment Opportunity officer. “We want to spread the important message that a strong workforce is one inclusive of the skills and talents of all individuals, including individuals with disabilities.” Employees can learn more about how to participate in National Disability Employment Awareness Month and ways they can promote its messages — during October and throughout the year — by visiting the ODEP website at www.dol.gov/odep. “Regardless, all play an important part in fostering a more inclusive workforce, one where every person is recognized for his or her abilities — every day of every month,” said Vitiello.

Survivors . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Continued from page 1 tween January 2013 and September 2014, there have more than 200 attempted suicides. Of those, 12 resulted in death. But the takeaways from the stand-down offered hope and solutions — talk to someone. For those concerned about confidentiality and a mental health visit on their military record, chaplains and Military Family Life Consultants must keep all visits confidential and no records are kept. Rebecca Morrison, a suicide survivor communications liaison with the Tragedy Assistance Program, or TAPS, knows all too well. Her husband, an Apache helicopter pilot, West Point grad and all-around “superman,” killed himself following a 2011 deployment to Iraq when he was just 26. She was 24. “To say my world crashed that day is an understatement,” she said. “He was my every dream, my whole being. The pain that he inflicted on himself was transferred to myself and everyone who loved him.” But as a trained counselor, she knew she had to get help. Surviving family members of suicide victims are three to five times more likely to commit suicide themselves. She went to counseling the next day — “the one thing I did right.” “If you get the help you need early on, you have

a much better success rate,” she added. She fought the urge to stay in bed and cry all day and made a pact with herself that she was of enough value to do something she enjoyed every day. She started riding her horse again and today, she can laugh again. Morrison offered additional resources for service members. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is 1-800-273-TALK. Vets4Warriors is a 24/7 confidential and anonymous hotline staffed completely by veterans from all branches for service members and family members struggling with suicidal thoughts. The number is 855-838-8255; from outside the U.S., call mil 312-560-1110 or civ (719) 567-1110. Martin closed the stand-down with a question:”How many of you know someone who has attempted or has died by suicide?” Nearly half of the audience members raised their hands. “The small act will be the intervention needed. You don’t have to do it alone,” she said. “Seeking help — that’s not a weakness, that’s a strength.” Wiesbaden’s Military and Family Life Consultants can be reached at civ (0175) 617-5799 or (0152) 26597638. Rules for recycling

Ask the commander . . . . . . . . . . . .

Aaron H. commented: This is not a complaint, but more of a “one person’s trash is another person’s treasure” situational awareness concern. While searching for empty boxes in the recycle bins in order to use for sending mail packages, I noticed that many of the boxes contained full names, addresses and places of business on Clay Kaserne. There were also numerous unopened letters and mail items in the recycle bins, which also contained names and addresses. Could it possibly be addressed to the community to ensure that they shred and dispose of personal information items? Thank you for your time. Response: Great observation, Aaron. Your comments are an excellent reminder to all of us

Daniela R. commented: One of my coworkers got yelled at by his neighbors for putting a milk carton (tetra pak) in the yellow bin. Tetra Paks do go in the yellow bin. Here’s the website for “Grüner Punkt” — www.gruener-punkt.de which tells you exactly what goes in the yellow bin. You can download the list in various languages. Response: Thanks, Daniela, for helping better explain how the sorting and recycling system works in Germany. Community members can also visit the “Recycling” page on the garrison’s home page (Under the “Useful Links” button) for detailed information on trash pick-up schedules, recycling, waste separation and more.

Cub Scouting, German style Story and photos by Bill Heiges Assistant Cubmaster Pack 13

About 40 Cub Scouts and 55 family members from Wiesbaden’s Pack 13 spent a Saturday afternoon in late September at a German Scout Camp near Gross-Gerau at the invitation of a local German Scouting organization, Pfadfinderstamm Drei Lilien. German Scout leaders Sonja Werle and Roland Schwarzfeld were happy to accommodate the American contingent as a sign of appreciation for having been asked to participate in the Pack’s Activity Day back in May. “We are very pleased to be able to exchange our Scouting programs with our American friends,” said Roland. “It is very important to maintain this special bond between our pack and our host nation Scouting partners,” added Matt Poole, Pack 13 cubmaster, “[and] we hope to continue this for years to come.” The event began with an opening flag ceremony with color guards representing Scouts from both countries. The American Cub Scouts were then mixed into four “patrols” that varied in rank and also included the dozen German Scouts. The four groups rotated through four stations manned by the German Pfadfinder leaders, which included a slide for life seat harness across a dry creek bed, starting a fire without matches, how to set up a German-style KOTHE tent and the proper use of a knife while whittling wood. Although all stations captured the interest of the American Cubs in some shape or fashion, the fire starter and wood whittling opportunities seemed to be the most fun for all. The Cubs used a striker and magnesium flint to spark onto a small piece of cotton in a fire pit. “This is fun stuff,” said Austin, a Webelos I Cub Scout, as he was striking away with the flint. Ty, also a Webelos I Cub Scout, managed to get a fire going on his cotton ball after a few attempts. “Look at what I did,” he exclaimed. The event came to an end with the retiring of the colors and an exchange of gratitude between the leaders from both Germany and the U.S. Frau Werle of the German Scouts then presented each participant with a special Pfadfinder Certificate recognizing their accomplishments. “We were very grateful you could spend this time with us and see the German style of Scouting,” she said. As a final treat all were given the opportunity to take a string of dough and place it on the end of a stick to bake it over an open fire — the German version of a s’more. To see what Cub Scouts has to offer in Wiesbaden check out the Facebook pages of Pack 13 and 65.

Jaleel Thomas-Tamrat, 6, wasn’t even born when his father, Pfc. Bryan Thomas, was killed in Iraq in 2008. Pregnant at the time, his mother, Shaherezad Tamrat, has built a memory for him through pictures and stories of her passed fiance and visits with her mother-in-law. On Oct. 3, U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden presented Jaleel one more piece of his father’s legacy: an American flag. Military funeral honors dictate that Survivors of deceased service members are given a triangular folded flag at the service, but it is never too late to honor the fallen. “I was seven months pregnant. After that I was more into grieving and getting my life together than getting a flag [for Jaleel],” Tamrat explained. “As he’s getting older he needs something to remember. I told him his dad was a hero and that God is taking care of him.” Sgt. 1st Class Faustin Desir, garrison chaplain assistant, saluted the flag, gently picked it up and knelt before Jaleel, who was sitting next to his mother and wearing a Gold Star pin in remembrance of his father. “On behalf of the United States Army and a grateful nation, please accept this flag as a Col. Two Wiesbaden military community youths enjoyed a special edition of this year’s German-American Friendship Day. During a ceremony in Frankfurt’s Römer (City Hall) Oct. 1, Virginia Keel and Max Petronyak were honored by Lord Mayor Peter Feldmann and U.S. Consul General Kevin Milas for their photographic contributions to the UnderstandinG Project. “German and American cooperation is more important than ever,” said Milas about the annual project sponsored by the city of Frankfurt and American Consulate during remarks in the historic building’s Kaiser Saal. Explaining that the UnderstandinG Project brings German and American youths together for

a yearlong project aimed at “building bridges,” this year the focus was on capturing images to tell a story about cultural understanding. “It’s important that the younger generation … born after the Cold War … understands how vital our transatlantic partnership is,” Milas said, “… and the UnderstandinG Project is a good example of that.” The consul general said he has been impressed every time by the efforts of those who take part in the annual project, adding that it lays the foundation for new relationships and friendships. Petronyak, a senior at Wiesbaden High School, said he heard about the project from others who had taken part in past years. “I just wanted to get involved in something in the community,” said Petronyak, who was honored with first place for his

dramatic photo of a Holocaust memorial and won a flight over Frankfurt. “I had the best German experience ever,” he said, explaining that participants really enjoyed the chance to share experiences and each other’s company while improving their photographic and language skills. “I’m taking away new friends. … UnderstandinG is a fun and interactive way to connect with the German community. The experience you get out of this is incomprehensible.” Keel, also a senior, won third place for her entry and two tickets to ride the Ebbelwoi (apple wine) Express in Frankfurt. “It was a new experience for me — being with another culture. … I was sad when the project was over,” Keel said. “It’s a great experience while you’re living in Germany,” she said, encouraging other young people to get involved in future UnderstandinG projects.

Frankfurt’s lord mayor recalled his first encounters with Americans in Frankfurt — enjoying ice cream from the Post Exchange — and credited the United States with helping teach Germans about democracy in the wake of World War II. “Democracy had to be learned again … and the Americans taught us.” Feldmann also recognized the close ties between Frankfurters and Americans, remembering the crucial role played by Allied pilots and crews during the Berlin Airlift in 1948-49. “Frankfurt and the Americans have grown closely together,” he said. During the yearlong project, participants, coached by a professional photographer, captured various perspectives focusing on German-American friendship or the United States with the theme “Your Region — Your Perspective.”

Helping riders stay safe on the hog Story and photos by Shayna Brouker

1st Sgt. Keith Jordan inspects Master Sgt. Michael Sadler’s Harley-Davidson.

Motorcycle riding is on the rise — along with the risk of crashes and fatalities. Chief Warrant Officer 2 Jamal Williams, U.S. Army Europe’s Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion safety officer, is on a mission to make motoring safe and fun. Williams hosted a safety ride Sept. 23 for Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month with USAREUR participants, but his goal is to get everyone smart on safe cycling. “I want to inform the entire community about motorcycle safety and pass on our knowledge to younger, inexperienced riders,” he said.

His brief highlighted the two types of accidents — motorcycle-only and motorcyclecar crashes; the causes (curves, intersections, speeding and overestimating driving ability, to name a few), protective gear, which does not include military uniforms, mandatory training and proper licensing. As of Sept. 26, USAREUR had one privately owned motorcycle fatality this fiscal year. Last fiscal year, USAREUR had 12 accidents. The significant decrease from last fiscal year is due to programs such as the Army Motorcycle Mentorship Program, according to Williams. For more information on motorcycle safety, contact Williams at mil 537-0744 or civ (0611) 705-0744 or Google “Motorcycle Mentorship Program.”

It was on the back of Tim Cuthbert that the Warriors were carried to a 32-17 victory against the Vilseck Falcons Sept. 26 at Wiesbaden. The Falcons struck first scoring a touchdown and converting the extra point as time wound down in the first quarter. The Warriors responded quickly with an 80-yard touchdown, as Cuthbert connected with Carlos Ortiz downfield. “Yes. That’s how we do it. … It’s a new game now,” shouted a member of the team as the touchdown was confirmed. Though the Vilseck ground game exposed some Warrior defensive vulnerabilities, it was a recovered fumble in the end zone that netted the Falcons another touchdown in the second quarter. As someone who suffered various pains and illnesses brought on by obesity, Vargas turned her life around by learning to manage those pains, dramatically improve her nutrition and to constantly keep moving. “I don’t want to make anyone think it was easy,” said the mother of four children and wife of U.S. Army Europe’s Chief Warrant Officer 4 Francisco Vargas, describing the dedication and faith it took for her to lose some 60 pounds in seven months. “After a lot of prayer and commitment, I gradually saw the weight coming off. “I can’t believe it still when other people come up to me and ask, ‘what are you doing?’ I tell them it’s not a diet, it’s a lifestyle change,” she said. “Do what you can where you’re at and you’ll see the little things add up. It should be a gradual change in your lifestyle.” The Army veteran said she had “hit rock bottom” before finding help through a pain management group at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and eventually turning to the Wiesbaden Army Wellness Center for a health risk assessment, health education, wellness coaching and encouragement. “All my life in one way or another I had struggled with diets.” Before finding a healthy alternative, Vargas had been consuming up to 12 dif-

ferent pills a day to cope with various ailments. “The doctors finally sat me down and said I was obese and I was offered to do a stomach bypass. I was in tears. … I was so upset when they told me it was all the fault of being overweight. I was offended,” she said, explaining that her doctors “were amazing” and thanks to their guidance she was “set on the path to healing.” “It finally dawned on me that it was a physical manifestation of what was going on inside me.” As a condition for the possible surgery, Vargas was required to lose weight. “I saw a nutritionist and was referred to the Army Wellness Center.” “When Ms. Vargas came Colette Thomas checks Esther Vargas’ blood to us about seven months pressure during a Wellness Center visit. off. … I learned that it’s not so much ago, she had a lot of injuries that prevented her from doing different how much you eat, but that what you kinds of exercises,” said Colette Thomas, do eat has nutritional value,” she said. health educator with the Wiesbaden “The fact of the matter is — you just Army Wellness Center. “Keeping nu- need to move.” She also decided not to get the bypass trition in mind, she changed her eating surgery. habits.” “Her entire outlook has changed “The light bulb moment for me was when Kurt (the Army Wellness Center’s tremendously,” said Thomas, adding, Kurt Peterson) explained that obesity is “She’s a very determined woman — a caused by 80 percent of what one eats, very amazing and inspiring woman. key,” Vargas said, adding that while she loves ice cream, rather than eliminate that pleasure, she has learned to treat herself with the occasional small portion. “The AWC provides the tools needed to create and sustain a healthy lifestyle,” said Andrew Munsterman, Army Wellness Center director. “We provide the coaching — but the client is ultimately responsible for his or her own health and habits. Ms. Vargas is someone who was honest with herself.” “The most rewarding experience is seeing the transformation in people — when they’re more confident,” said Thomas. “The Army Wellness Center is a place where you can come, and the people here truly care about the people in the community. During our appointments we really get to know our clients. … It’s always about setting realistic and obtainable goals.” The health educator added that the center is open to everyone — service members, family members, civilians and retirees. “They just motivate me so much and get me excited,” said Vargas, adding, “The Army Wellness Center is not a magic pill. It’s a resource — you have to use the tools that are given to you — in order to see a difference.” Her biggest takeaway message to others seeking to live a healthier lifestyle: “Don’t lose hope.” For more information about the Wiesbaden Wellness Center visit www. wiesbaden.army.mil/sites/services/wellness.asp, stop by the center in Building 1201 (above the Warrior Transition Unit) on Clay Kaserne or call civ (06371) 9464 1478. Ready and Resilient ... Ready and Resilient ... Ready and Resilient By Tom Blakely

U.S.Army Garrison Wiesbaden Ready and Resilient Director

Have you ever felt surprised by an emotion you expressed that seemed out of place? Have you laughed when you should have cried and vice-versa? These emotional responses are often out of proportion to the event and may be caused by a deep belief or core value. In the resiliency world, we refer to these beliefs as icebergs. They are your core values (what you aspire to) and core beliefs (what you believe to be true of

Page 14

yourself, others and the world). Often lying below the surface, much like an iceberg, these beliefs and values greatly influence our emotional responses. Understanding your individual icebergs will help you to identify those beliefs that interfere with your ability to respond effectively to adversity. The first step toward understanding how your icebergs affect your emotional outcomes is to identify these core beliefs. Oftentimes these beliefs or values are so imbedded within us that we are not even aware they

Herald Union

exist. Getting to the heart of what is below the surface, though, will improve your self-awareness and allow you to either reinforce or change these beliefs, therefore enhancing your ability to stay in control when faced with a difficult situation. Examples of typical icebergs include statements like, “Family comes First,” or “Respect your Elders.” They are often broad statements about how the world should operate. To detect your icebergs, you should start by asking yourself “What” questions. Think of an

instance where you overreacted to a situation and ask yourself the following series of questions: What is the most upsetting part of that for me? What does that mean to me? What is the worst part of that for me? Assuming that is true, what about that is so upsetting to me? By taking the time to dissect the situation and dig into the root causes, you will begin to understand your icebergs. It is then up to you to decide if these core beliefs are valid or should be changed. Having a clearer

picture of your icebergs, though, will help you greatly the next time you get upset over what seems to be nothing. To learn more about detecting your icebergs, or any of the Comprehensive Soldier Family Fitness training, contact your unit Master Resilience Trainer. Civilians and family members can contact Army Community Service for resiliency training. (Editor’s note: This is the second in a series focusing on the various components of the CSF2 resiliency program.)

Dracula Untold (PG-13) — This version of the Dracula saga explores the origin of Dracula, weaving vampire mythology with the true history of Prince Vlad the Impaler. It seeks to depict Dracula as a flawed hero in a tragic love story set in a dark age of magic and war. Stars Luke Evans and Sarah Gadon. The Judge (R) — Robert Downy Jr. stars as a lawyer trying to solve the mystery surrounding his mother’s death. Also stars Vera Farmiga, Billy Bob Thornton and Robert Duvall. Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day (PG) — Eleven-yearold Alexander experiences the most terrible and horrible day of his young life — a day that begins with gum stuck in his hair, followed by one calamity after another. But when Alexander tells his upbeat family about the misadventures of his disastrous day, he finds little sympathy and begins to wonder if bad things only happen to him. Stars Jennifer Garner, Ed Oxenbould and Steve Carell. Fury (R) — As the Allies make their final push in the European Theater in April 1945, a battle-hardened Army sergeant named Wardaddy (Brad Pitt) commands a Sherman tank and her five-man crew on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. Outnumbered and outgunned, Wardaddy and his men face overwhelming odds in their heroic attempts to strike at the heart of Nazi Germany. Also stars Shia LaBeouf and Michael Pena. St. Vincent (PG-13) — Maggie (Melissa McCarthy), a single mother, moves into a new home in Brooklyn with her 12-year-old son, Oliver. Forced to work long hours, she has no choice but to leave Oliver in the care of their new neighbor, Vincent (Bill Murray), a retired curmudgeon with a penchant for alcohol and gambling. An odd friendship soon blossoms between the improbable pair. Together with a pregnant stripper named Daka (Naomi Watts), Vincent brings Oliver along on all the stops that make up his daily routine. Vincent helps Oliver grow to become a man, while Oliver begins to see in Vincent something that no one else is able to: a misunderstood man with a good heart. The Equalizer — Denzel Washington plays McCall, a former black ops commando who has faked his death to live a quiet life in Boston. When he comes out of his selfimposed retirement to rescue a young girl, Teri (Chloe Moretz), he finds himself face to face with ultra-violent Russian gangsters. As he serves vengeance against those who brutalize the helpless, McCall’s desire for justice is reawakened. If someone has a problem, the odds are stacked against them, and they have nowhere else to turn, McCall will help.

All Hazards

Exercise puts U.S., host nation first responders to the test Story and photos by Karl Weisel

T

hree masked individuals burst into the Tony Bass Auditorium Sept. 26 gunning down several people before taking others hostage. Military Police were quickly on the scene, safeguarding the area, accounting for the injured and calling for backup from fellow U.S. military and host nation first responders. As many on Wiesbaden’s Clay Kaserne went about their daily business, U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden members and their German counterparts were pulling out all the stops to put their emergency response capabilities to the test during the annual All Hazards Exercise. “The main reason we do these annual Full Scale All Hazards Exercises is to ensure our first responders are prepared — just in case an incident might occur,” said Robert Thomas, director of the U.S. Army Garrison’s Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security. With a small chunk of Clay Kaserne cordoned off, emergency vehicles with lights flashing blocking access to the area, MPs, German Police and Quick Reaction Force members taking up positions to secure the area around the Tony Bass facilities, pedestrians and drivers were forced to make small detours to get around on the installation. Thomas said he was especially impressed with how host nation and U.S. military first responders worked together to quickly assess the situation, confront the challenges presented and to actively engage — com-

municating and coordinating consistently with those in the Emergency Operations Center and command elements on the scene. “I think those were our really strong points,” Thomas said, “how well they work together. “Things to work on include getting more community involvement, including tenant units and agencies and members of the community, so that everyone knows what to do and how to react in case of an incident,” he said. The noise of an approaching helicopter signaled the arrival of members of the Special Einsatz Kommando (German Police task force). As the elite law enforcement officers rappelled from the hovering aircraft, they quickly moved in to begin the hostage negotiations, eventually “neutralizing” the suspects and rescuing the hostages. Meanwhile, several hundred feet from the scene, U.S. and host nation medical personnel were hard at work gathering personal information, assessing and treating injuries before moving the “injured” role players to the Wiesbaden Fire Department which was serving as the local hospital during the exercise. “Our number-one priority is the safety of our community members,” said Col. Mary Martin, USAG Wiesbaden commander, during an after-action review immediately following the exercise. “We count on

our host nation to support us on this.” Like Thomas, Martin said those participating in the exercise “were doing what they were supposed to do,” but felt that future events should include more community involvement to provide more realistic training. “I think everything went smoothly out there on the ground … of course, there are always areas that could be improved,” said Lt. Col. Joseph Hissim, USAG Wiesbaden’s director of Emergency Services. Hissim thanked the Polizei, SEK members and
