ENERGY TIP OF THE WEEK

How to efficiently use your German rolladen shutters and lower your home temperature:

» Before leaving for work or running errands, open all the windows and shutters to allow cool air to enter and hot air to leave. Normally, between 4–8 a.m. we have the coolest morning hours.

» Remember, hot air rises, open your top-level windows.

» Just before leaving, close all shutters, especially windows that are getting direct sunlight. This process can create your own personal A/C without increasing energy consumption.

TAKE NOTE

ATTN: Those packing up, leaving the KMC

Many members wait too long to begin the household goods moving process, thereby causing additional stress and delays. The 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron Personal Property Office advises movers to call them at +49-631-536-7727 three weeks before moving to begin the booking process.

Small mistakes carry big consequences

Wrapped in a scratchy and uncomfortable wool blanket on a worn down mat, I was sitting in a jail cell asking myself where I went wrong. I wondered what led me to even start my car that night and how I was going to recover from this.

On Friday, Dec. 9, 2022, I attended a squadron Christmas party in Altus, Oklahoma, and got a DUI that took away a lot of my benefits as a military member. Since then, I have worked hard to come back from my mistake and do right by the leaders who supported me during a difficult time.

The night started with me and five of my wingmen setting up for the holiday party, which turned into three hours of partying with my squadron. After the event, some friends and I continued the festivities at a local bar near my apartment.

I felt alert enough to drive, so that’s exactly what I did. I drove to my apartment that was less than half a mile away from the bar. The short distance gave me false confidence.

As I was pulling into a parking spot at my apartment complex, I saw police lights flash behind me. I didn’t think they were for me, but I was shocked to see the officer come up to my car and say I was speeding.

The officer said he smelled alcohol and made me complete some sobriety tests, which I thought I aced. In reality, my test performances in combination with a 0.11 blood alcohol level ended with me being put into handcuffs and taken to jail.

While I was in the uncomfortable cell, I had a lot of time to reflect on the decisions that led me here and what might happen next. I thought my upcoming permanent change of station was going to be canceled and I knew my career was going to be severely changed.

After spending the night in a holding cell, my first sergeant picked me up and assured me leadership would support me as best they could.

The week after the DUI, I reported in to see my commander and that’s when I felt the administrative repercussions. I was demoted from senior airman to airman first class, I received a letter of reprimand and given a referral on my enlisted performance report.

These consequences delayed my promotion eligibility by 20 months, stopped me from using tuition assistance toward my education for a year and revoked my base driving privileges for a year. On top of everything, my civilian court and lawyer fees totaled around $5,000.

I think about what I would do if I could go back and do it over again all the time. Such a small mistake carried so many consequences and it all could’ve been avoided.

There were so many options I could have done instead. I had coworkers who would have happily driven me, I could have called a taxi or even walked home. By choosing to drive under the influence, I put others safety at risk and it’s not worth it.

Don’t drink and drive. Call Airman Against Drunk Driving at 0152-5172-3356 on Friday, Saturday and holiday weekends from 2300-0500 to get a free ride.

Office Call with Lord Mayor Kimmel Ramstein Library hosts Juneteenth book reading

Major Gen. Paul D. Moga, Third Air Force and Kaiserslautern Military Community commander, met with Lord Mayor of Kaiserslautern Beate Kimmel for an office call in Kaiserslautern on June 17. These leaders discussed a wide range of topics pertaining to the military and local populations living side by side.

During the meeting Lord Mayor Kimmel emphasized the need to better utilize the GermanAmerican Community Office and she welcomed the idea introduced by Maj. Gen. Moga of hosting an annual cultural event together with the General and John Constance of the “WiR! Program,” a state initiative that promotes and maintains GermanAmerican relations in the state of Rheinland-Pfalz.

Maj. Gen. Moga invited Lord Mayor Kimmel to visit Ramstein

Air Base or a nearby U.S. Air Force installation to familiarize herself with operations, facilities, and positive developments.

Being new in office, Lord Mayor Kimmel emphasized the importance of better understanding and getting to know each other and suggested a future meeting with members of the Ministry of the Interior and for Sports.

Preventing DUIs and building awareness about alcohol and illegal substance consumption was a further topic on the agenda.

Maj. Gen. Moga pointed out that efforts should start at a grassroots level, for example focusing on educating newcomers and preparing them for life in Germany as a way to safeguard good neighborhood relations.

Maj. Gen. Moga is looking forward to engaging with Michael Ebling, Minister of the Interior and for Sports of Rheinland-Pfalz, in Mainz this July.

KMC Soldiers, Airmen teach in cadet leadership course

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Trevor Calvert 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

A junior reserve officers training corps cadet leadership course, consisting of highschool students from Alconbury, Lakenheath, Spangdahlem, Ramstein and Kaiserslautern high schools, took place around the Kaiserslautern Military Community, June 9-15.

This annual weeklong Air Force JROTC sponsored cadet leadership course teaches cadets about leadership by giving them opportunities to lead their peers, learn from experienced leaders around the KMC and put them in tough positions where they have to learn to come up with a solution.

“Our mission of JROTC is to develop citizens of character and we do that in a variety of ways, whether it’s platform instruction about leadership or aerospace science, with no obligation to join the military,” said William Conley, U.S. Air Force JROTC senior aerospace science instructor. “The skills we teach these students and cadets are applicable no matter what path they ultimately choose.”

Conley realized that the AFJROTC program needed the camaraderie and different experiences from other bases around Europe, so the cadets can learn from other cadets and see what works for different scenarios. The cadet leadership course gives JROTC leaders time to fine tune what they want to see from their cadets and how they can go forward.

“The programs are cadet led, the instructors are there for oversight, but the program and the experience is for the cadets,” said Conley. “We teach them that over the week and it really shows during the school year, when we see the cadets teaching each other, without our input.”

The course makes every day a different experience, electing new cadets to be leaders each day. This style of learning pushes the cadets to get out of their comfort zone and be involved.

“I’ve never been put into a position like this where I’m leading and guiding other cadets,” said Ana Alejandro Diez, Alconbury AB AFJROTC cadet. “Being put in this position made me realize every person is different and they have their own way of doing things. As a leader, if you’re going to be in charge of a big group, you will need to communicate to find out what works for you.”

Completing the mission with excellence and integrity is a daily task in the Air Force that no single Airman can accomplish. Each member’s dedication and teamwork is essential to success.

“In the military, any career field you’re in will work as a team that is working towards one goal, and you want that goal to be met and exceeded,” said Diez. “Being open to criticism and communicating with others lets us complete our goals we have set for us and also helps us find new goals or tasks to accomplish.”

The AFJROTC cadet leadership

course sharpens leadership skills and fosters a sense of community among cadets, preparing them for future challenges. By integrating lessons from different bases around the KMC, the program ensures that values of excellence and integrity are ingrained in each participant, reflecting the core principles of the Air Force.

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz

U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz joins the nation in honoring Juneteenth, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. The garrison’s observance of this day celebrates freedom and Black American culture, highlighting the shared values of equality and unity within the community.

Although it has long been celebrated within the African American community, this monumental event remains largely unknown to many Americans.

Juneteenth was established as a federal holiday in the United States on June 17, 2021, when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law. Prior to that, Juneteenth has been celebrated in various African American communities since June 19, 1866, marking the first anniversary of the announcement of General Order No. 3 by Union Army General Gordon Granger, which proclaimed freedom for enslaved people in Texas. Texas was the first state to make Juneteenth an official state holiday in 1980.

Formerly enslaved individuals quickly moved to reunite families, establish schools, run for political office, advocate for radical legislation, and even sue former slaveholders for compensation. Considering the over 200 years of enslavement, these changes were truly outstanding. In less than a generation after emancipation, African Americans were inspired and empowered to transform their lives and their country.

“Juneteenth to me signifies a day of freedom that acknowledges the sacrifices of slaves and the ongoing efforts for equality,” said Joey Gibbons, operations officer for USAG RheinlandPfalz’s Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization & Security, reflecting on the meaning of Juneteenth. “This day is a steppingstone in the right direction for U.S. history.”

Celebrating Juneteenth provides an opportunity to reflect on the progress that has been made and to recognize the ongoing struggle for justice and equality.

Chelseann Smith, sponsorship and advertising sales manager for USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s Directorate of Family and Morale,

Welfare & Recreation, said that there is a common bond across all African Americans on Juneteenth and that celebrating this day unifies the community.

“To me, Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, family and Black American culture,” she said. “It exhibits the progress and the hope of America’s promise.”

The historical significance of Juneteenth highlights the importance of never giving up hope, even in uncertain times.

On June 19, 1865, more than two years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, bringing the news that the Civil War had ended and the enslaved were now free. This day represents not only the liberation of African Americans from the bonds of slavery but also the enduring strength and resilience of a community that continued to strive for freedom and equality despite immense adversity.

It reminds us of the critical importance of hope and perseverance in the face of challenges, inspiring us to continue working toward a more inclusive and equitable society for all.

‘DPW Kontakt Week’ cohort 1 consisted of 14 team members who visited each division of DPW, meeting colleagues who they might not interact with every day, to gain a better understanding of their own department’s functions and learn how the work in each section affects the other divisions, and garrison overall.

USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s DPW has six divisions and employs nearly 400 people in both the Kaiserslautern and Baumholder military communities — Department of the Army Civilians, local nationals and hun-

dreds of contractors, executing all elements of the garrison’s public works activities.

The DPW’s overall mission is to provide safe, clean, comfortable, and functional facilities in an environment to meet the needs of Soldiers, Civilians, and family members within the garrison.

Each division offers unique and crucial functions and capabilities that are essential for the garrison’s operations year-round, comparable to a city public works department.

The Master Planning and Real Property Division is led by Claude Armstrong, chief of the Master Planning Division. MPD develops and maintains master plans, conducts Real Property Planning Board meetings, provides major construction programming services, and ensures maximum utiliza-

tion of facilities. The Real Property Branch section services the acquiring, managing and disposal of Real Property & Estate.

The Environmental/Energy Management Division falls under the stewardship of HansKarl Betzhold, supervisory environmental engineer. EMD provides environmental and energy guidance, support, and liaison services to those who live, work and train on garrison installations. The EMD’s core role is to help ensure that the military community complies with all necessary environmental requirements.

The Business Operations Integration Division, helmed by David Vines, supervisory industrial engineer, provides management of directorate resources, information technology, human resources, and organizational strategic planning — along with financial planning, analysis, programming support and industrial engineering services.

The Facility Engineering Division, overseen by Nathan Hay, FED chief, provides engineering support and construction project management to the garrison. FED plans, organizes, coordinates, and oversees planning, execution of design, and construction.

The Housing Management Division, under the guidance of Harald Kastner, HMD chief, supports personnel with unaccompanied, on post family and private rental housing. The HMD admin-

isters housing entitlements, furniture support and provides guidance to the garrison command on exceptional situations in support of Soldiers and their families.

Lastly, the Operations & Maintenance Division, directed by Gerd Mueller, OMD chief, supports the garrison mission through effective use of energy, providing and maintaining sustainable facilities/ infrastructure, and emphasizing a culture of safety.

Leading the garrison’s DPW is Truett Sanchez, serving as the director, alongside Travis Monson, who holds the position of deputy director. Together with Dr. George Brown, chief of the Administration and Operations Branch, they provide strategic direction and operational oversight to steer DPW towards its mission fulfillment.

Truett Sanchez, DPW director, and organizer of Kontakt Week, set the following goals for the participating DPW team members: orient team-members to jobs and duties in other divisions and to enhance understanding of the overall DPW mission, goals, and objectives; provide cohesiveness in how jobs affect the overall DPW mission; increase job understanding and job satisfaction; and ultimately help to increase productivity within each division.

According to Brown, DPW leaders used the template from USAG RP’s Team Member Orientation, which is designed to help new

employees understand the overall garrison mission and its organizational structure by providing an overview of each directorate and describing how their missions are nested into and compliment the garrison mission.

“We have a uniquely expansive garrison footprint that spans a large geographic area. As a result, regular travel to each location is impractical, making it particularly meaningful to see the locations and meet the people in person, especially those from DPW, who work in various locations and departments across our region.”

One cohort member told Brown it was important for him to learn about the impacts his job has on others; Kontakt Week gave him a better understanding of the DPW’s mission. Mathias Reh, general engineer from OMD Utilities Branch, participated and said that it was a great week. “It helped all of us gain a better understanding of day-to-day operations and how we can support each other within the DPW [in our shared mission] to make the garrison the best it can be.”

DPW is looking forward to the next Kontak week cohort. For more information about DPW, please visit Directorate of Public Works: Directorate of Public Works: https:// home.army.mil/rheinland-pfalz/ about/directorates-support-offices/ directorate-public-works-dpw

US Army Chief Engineer inspects joint construction operations during Resolute Castle 2024

KRIVOLAK TRAINING AREA, North Macedonia — The 7th Engineer Brigade, in collaboration with the North Macedonian armed forces, hosted the U.S. Army Chief of Engineers, Lt. Gen. Scott Spellmon, on June 4, during construction operations under the Resolute Castle 2024 exercise.

This joint exercise revolves around creating and improving real-world infrastructure to enhance the North Macedonian armed forces’ capabilities to train. The 7th Engineer Brigade deployed the 500th Engineer Support Company and the 902nd Engineer Construction Company which will work alongside the 1st North Macedonian Engineer Battalion and U.S. Navy Seabees.

“This is an excellent opportunity for our engineer battalions that are out in the field to work on collective training that for us, as engineers, we don’t always get at our home station,” said Spellmon. “We don’t fight, and we don’t build things [alone]; we must rely on our international counterparts that are out here with us; with the Navy Seabees that are out here with us. We do this as a team.”

The current building projects are aimed at laying the foundation to bring heavy armor through the Krivolak Training Area for joint training with the North Macedonian military. These projects include: A targetry storage warehouse, a heavy vehicle wash rack, an UAS airstrip, a motor pool, and range road improvements.

According to Brig. Gen. John

Lloyd, division commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, North Atlantic Division, the impact of this exercise is not just about construction, but the capacity to increase interoperability and overall readiness across our partner nations, which ultimately is mutually beneficial to everyone.

“It’s really about readiness. It’s great to see the battalion Soldiers getting some real-world training,” said Lloyd, “what really inspired me is that you have a lot of new Soldiers coming straight out of

AIT that have never participated in a training exercise so large, and you can tell they are getting a lot of quality training. I think it’s the perfect exercise to improve the readiness of the regiment.”

RC24 is ultimately a mutually beneficial exercise, where improving the training area’s infrastructure will generate a higher quality of training for both U.S. and North Macedonian troops. Even before the cement starts to dry, leaders from both nations are already looking forward towards

developing this partnership even further.

“Resolute Castle lets us prepare ourselves for DE25 by allowing us to accept all the participating force packages, allowing for greater integration between our armed forces,” said Brig. Gen. Besnik Emini, the commander of Operations Command Army of the Republic of North Macedonia.

“We appreciate that the U.S. Army is here assisting us in building these facilities where our Soldiers can shoot, train, evaluate, and be

ready to deploy. This is very important for us because this reinforces the message that we are stronger together!”

Resolute Castle 24 is a USAREUR-AF directed exercise that utilizes U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, and NATO engineers to increase partner capacity and strengthen capabilities across NATO’s eastern member states through real-world engineer-related training and the expansion of infrastructure in support of defender-series exercises.

ABC IN KMC: Kerwe

Driving through villages and towns at this time of the year, drivers might see signs and posters announcing an annual event called “Kerwe” or “Kirchweih,” which means carnival or festival.

The original word Kirchweih translated means church consecration. In the Palatinate dialect it was changed to Kerwe.

Since the third century, newly built Christian churches were consecrated in a solemn ceremony, where the priest cleansed the new church of demons.

Originally Kerwe was a church celebration, which changed into a worldly event with carnivals, dance performances and other amusements.

Until the 1920s, Kerwe was, besides Christmas, the most important fest in a village. Houses and fences were painted. Children received new clothes, and women cooked and baked

for relatives and other guests coming to visit the fest. Young ladies and men also used the opportunity to meet each other at these festivals and many a couple tied the knot in the following months.

Today the fest is less important in terms of relative or friend gatherings. People still cook a lot, the carnival or festival is set up on the village’s marketplace, gasthouses offer dances, and sometimes a parade goes through town. There are normally a lot of food and beverage booths, rides for kids and elders, and music on various stages ranging from traditional German tunes to pop and rock. Most towns also offer a “Frühschoppen,” a type of early morning drinking event, with lively traditional “oompa” music.

The village youth bind the traditional “Kerwestrauss,” a pole decorated with thousands of colored ribbons, which is mounted up at the local gasthaus. Here the traditional “Kerwerede,” a speech about local scandals,

sensations and funny events is read in typical dialect by a good speaker standing on a ladder.

In the 16th century, Kerwe was celebrated mainly in the months of October and November. Today a lot of carnivals take place in July, August or September because of the weather. In the past Kerwe was similar to Thanksgiving with people celebrating the end of harvest.

Upcoming village festivals nearby:

• Niedermohr July 5

• Enkenbach July 12

• Trippstadt July 26

• Schopp July 26

• Obermohr July 27

• Miesenbach Aug. 23

• Kindsbach Aug. 23

• Sembach Aug. 23

• Alsenborn Sep. 6.

Check your local “Amtsblatt” or watch for posters/signs in individual towns. The City of Ramstein is celebrating the 300th Kerwe anniversary in mid-September this year.

You pass Füssen, known for its many lakes, and enter Koenigswinkel, where you come face to face with the romantic castles of Ludwig II, Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. Once you arrive in Oberbayern you continue toward Oberammergau and the mighty monastery Ettal. In the vicinity is one of the highlights of the route, Germany’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze. The surrounding area of Garmisch Partenkirchen offers a variety of options. If you follow the Wettersteinmountain range you pass the Walchensee and the Kochelsee and eventually arrive in the famed health resorts Bad Heilbrunn and Bad Toelz. Continue through the Tegernsee Valley and the Chiemgau to the health resort Bad Reichental, known for its salt springs and saltern. The last leg of the journey brings you to Berchtesgaden, close to the Austrian border where the Watzman mountain offers a picturesque finish to the German Alpine Route.

The Zugspitze

At almost 3,000 meters (nearly 10,000 feet) in height, the Zugspitze is Germany’s highest mountain. You can reach the peak via a rack railway, arriving first at the glacier. Once at the glacier, you switch transportation and continue on a cable car. A breathtaking 360-degree view awaits you, a spectacle of countless peaks in Austria, Italy, Switzerland and Germany.

Oberstaufen

The health and therapeutic resort of Oberstaufen offers Schroth therapy to help you improve your well-being. Schroth therapy, named for Johann Schroth, has been an accepted homeopathic treatment in Germany for over 170 years. The Schroth diet for example, is a way to purify your body and lose weight through perspiring, drinking and dieting sensibly.

Bad Hindelang

Known as a Kneippism health resort of distinction, Bad Hindelang is located in the middle of the Allgaeu Alps. Important sites include a picturesque church with a substantial altar, the city hall and a hunting castle. Of course, in the wintertime the area is a haven for winter sports.

Garmisch

Famous for its Olympic Ice Sport Center and its ski-jump, Garmisch is a must-visit.

Every New Year’s Day, fans come here to watch the famous New Year’s Day Ski Jump.

The Partnachklamm offers natural beauty at its best. It is 800 meters long and the walls are up to 80 meters high. You can walk through the Partnachklamm in the summer and winter.

During the winter you will find bizarre ice sculptures on its walls. This site is a definite must-see, especially during evening hikes, and of course always with a tour guide.

The castles of King Ludwig II Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau and Linderhof

These magical buildings invite you into their holds for a romantic journey. It’s also worth taking a hike through the Wetterstein mountains to view King Ludwig’s hunting castle. Not far from this region you can also visit a botanical garden with over 1,500 plants and flowers typical to the Alps.

Walchensee

Walchensee is a lake dubbed the “pearl” of Bavarian lakes. Almost no buildings spoil the shores of the lake; motor boats are not permitted, and you can walk entirely around it. Many famous people decided to drop their anchors and live at the Walchensee, including King Ludwig, Goethe and the painter Lovis Corinth.

Bad Tölz

Bad Tölz is renowned for its iodine springs, its swamp and its climate, which has been proven to benefit health. Whether

you’re here to take care of your health or to participate in the many sports activities, in Bad Tölz you can find the best options for all. In addition, the Altstadt and its attractive restaurants and shops will make your stay unforgettable.

Chiemgau

Chiemgau is framed by the Chiemgauer Alps in the south and the Wagninger See in the north. This area may surprise you with its large amount of cultural offerings and sophisticated musical performances. You will also find celebrations in the local costume, theatre and other events.

Cycling is one of the most beloved sports in this area and you can discover hundreds of kilometers of cycling routes. In the wintertime enjoy the variety of slopes Chiemgau has to offer, and for the more romantic at heart, take a romantic carriage ride or glide onto the frozen lake for ice skating.

Berchtesgaden

This site first became significant as the home of “white gold” — salt. There are many sights to see in this city including the old market place with the Lowenbrunnen (lion’s fountain), which originated in 1558, and the Hirschenhaus with its beautiful painted facade from 1694. Churches, museums and the spectacular backdrop of Watman mountain and Koenigsee tempt you with their unsurpassed hospitality.

To discover the secret of salt you need to travel down, underneath the castle Gruttenstein. Here you find a large net of galleries where you can learn the complete history of how salt was — and still is — extracted. The museum also gives a fascinating glimpse into the history of “white gold.”
