20th CBRNE Command Defenders win championship during APG Turkey Bowl
by
Walter T. Ham IV 20th Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosives Command Public Affairs
Soldiers from the U.S. military’s premier Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosives command proved their grit on the gridiron by winning the championship during the Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, Turkey Bowl, Nov. 25.
The 20th CBRNE Command “Defenders” outlasted the defending champions from the Program Executive Office Command, Control and Communications – Network during the flag football championship game and came away with a 12 - 7 win.
The 20th CBRNE Command Defenders defeated four teams to take top honors on the nation’s oldest operation proving ground.
1st Sgt. Christopher D. Holmstadt, the senior enlisted leader for the 20th CBRNE Command Headquarters and Headquarters Company, said Spc. Keon Forbes saved the game for the Defenders with an end zone interception that led to their winning score.
“The team comradery was excellent,” said Holmstadt, a Master Explosive Ordnance Disposal technician from Lake City, Michigan, who has served in the U.S. Army for 18 years.
Holmstadt also credited
20th CBRNE Command Coach Sgt. Traci A. Bennett for shepherding the team to victory in the APG competition.
In the annual intra-command 20th CBRNE Command Turkey Bowl, the noncommissioned officer team went from being down 8 – 6 at halftime to quadrupling the officers score 32 – 8 and winning their second consecutive championship title, Nov. 27.
The 20th CBRNE Command Communication Directorate (G6) took home the trophy during the intra-command field goal kicking contest.
From 19 bases in 16 states, Soldiers and Army civilians from 20th CBRNE Command deploy in support of joint, interagency and allied operations around the world.
Maj. Steven M. Modugno, the public affairs director for the 20th CBRNE Command, said the 20th CBRNE Command Soldiers came together for the annual Turkey Bowl in the spirit of friendly competition.
“The 20th CBRNE Command Defenders are always a smart, tough and tenacious team, both on and off the gridiron,” said Modugno, a native of Santa Clarita, California. “From confronting and defeating the world’s most dangerous hazards to winning championships on the gridiron, our team always brings a winning attitude to the fight. Happy Thanksgiving.”
Best of the best: USAG RP’s Community Recreation Division makes history
by Linda Lambiotte U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz
U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz’s Directorate of Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation’s Community Recreation Services became the first-ever internationally accredited program recognized by the National Recreation and Park Association in the Best of the Best Ceremony in Atlanta, Georgia, Oct 9.
Jason Etchell, deputy director, DFMWR, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz, said that the Commission for Accreditation of Parks and Recreation Accreditation is a management system that evaluates the overall quality of operations, management, and community service using approximately 140 essential standards.
“With this accreditation, we become part of an elite group of approximately 200 agencies, which includes state and national parks, city municipalities, and a select few Department of Defense agencies,” he said.
The CAPRA process involves a formal application, self-assessments, a site visit and a hearing with the commission to grant accreditation. DFMWR hosted a site visit for accreditation from May 20-23, and NRPA inspectors recommended them for accreditation after the visit, Etchell said.
“The CAPRA officials approved accreditation of our program and U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz was recognized as the first Internationally accredited program,” said Rhonda Hunter, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s DFMWR Director. “In addition to the hearing and recognition ceremony, our FMWR representatives were able to attend valuable educational seminars and trainings throughout the week and participate in Army and Armed Forces sessions focused on military specific recreation topics.
“The accreditation process is not meant to be a one-time inspection where we meet specified accreditation standards at a specific point in time,” she said. “Instead, it is a commitment to incorporate processes and standards into our everyday operating environment for our recreational programs. In the long run, this ensures that we provide quality programs that are responsive to the needs of our community.”
Hunter believes that what set her team apart from others was their commitment to excellence, rooted in their mission and culture as FMWR professionals.
The FMWR team members who are credited for the CAPRA accreditation achievement are: Rhonda Hunter, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s DFMWR director; Eryn Pope, Outdoor Recreation Branch chief; Deborah Washington, facility manager; Joshua Hampton, library director; Daryl Daniels, operations assistant; Tucker Wakefield, program administrator; Kenneth Forman, auto skills manager; Wayne Doornbos, Warrior Adventure Quest programmer; and Daniel Washington, Fitness, Athletics and Aquatics chief.
“Achieving this milestone not only validates our organization’s operational capacity but also demonstrates just how dedicated we are to delivering exceptional park and recreation services to the USAG Rheinland-Pfalz community,” said Eryn Pope, Outdoor Recreation branch chief for Community Recreation Division. Pope, who splits her time between Pulaski Barracks in Kaiserslautern and Smith Barracks in Baumholder, explained the significance of achieving this initiative which required strategic planning, collaboration with multiple stakeholders and a deep understanding of
the intricacies of the accreditation process.
“The goal was to establish our organization as a benchmark for excellence in military park and recreation services, setting a precedent for overseas accreditation within the Installation Management Command DFMWR Community — and we did just that,” she said.
The Community Recreation Division’s mission is to support the Army Force Generation Model by providing resources and services that enhance region and garrison capabilities to support the expeditionary Army and deliver a quality of life for Soldiers and families commensurate with their service.
The newly accredited Community Recreation Division serves as a one-stop-shop for quality entertainment, personal growth, and community engagement, offering a diverse range of programs that cater to all interests. USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s Community Recreation Division provides a wide range of activities and services that bring people together and enhance the overall quality of life across the largest and most unique garrison in Europe that spans across 28 sites within Germany.
USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s Community Recreation Division achieves this level of excellence through their core programs consisting of:
• Fitness, Athletics and Aquatics: Offering fitness facilities, seasonal individual & team sports, health/wellness programs, clinics, and special events throughout the year. Facilities and programs located on Sembach Kaserne, Kleber Kaserne, Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Pulaski Barracks, Landstuhl, Miesau and Baumholder.
• Outdoor Recreation: Offers guided tours with Family and MWR buses as well as contracted buses, equipment rental for all season activities, rental of storage units, high adventure trips and tours, and Warrior Adventure Quest. Facilities and programs are located on Pulaski Barracks and Baumholder.
• Auto Skills Program: Offers “Do it Yourself” services, mechanic for hire, speedy oil and tire services — perfect for car enthusiasts and DIYers. Facilities and programs are located on Pulaski Barracks, Landstuhl and Baumholder.
• Music and Theater performing arts: USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s award-winning community theater provides a wide variety of theater entertainment, education and community engagement opportunities for youth, families and adults. A place to unleash creativity with musical and theater productions, classes, and workshops in acting, directing, singing, and more. Facilities are located on Kleber Kaserne and Daenner Kaserne.
• Libraries: Providing the place to find your new favorite book, join a book discussion group, enjoy gaming nights, movie nights, teen programs, and access computer labs and online resources. Facilities are located on Kleber Kaserne, Landstuhl and Baumholder.
• Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers and Warrior Zone: Enhancing quality of life for single servicemembers with programs focused on community service, recreation, and leisure activities. Facilities are located on Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Sembach Kaserne and Baumholder.

GACO CORNER: SNOW REMOVAL, SANDING
by German-American Community Office
Rules in Germany for keeping up your property or rental during winter may greatly differ from in the United States. The GermanAmerican Community Office has put together a few guidelines for your safety and those of others.
According to Article 17, paragraph 3, line 5 of German rules applying to public order, keeping up roads and sidewalks is delegated to the owners and/or occupants of developed or undeveloped premises, accessible to pedestrians on a public public road or adjacent to one.
Duties in winter include the removal of snow from the roads, sidewalks and crosswalks and very icy roads with sand or light gravel. In terms of proper timing, this means that winter responsibilities need to be carried out prior to heavy pedestrian or road traffic. Salt is only allowed under extremely icy conditions.
This means that sanding has to be done in such a timely manner that roads and sidewalks are secure prior to traffic, but not later than 7 a.m. on weekdays. Under certain circumstances, however, clearing may be required to start even earlier.
On Sundays and holidays, heavy traffic is considered to start around 9 a.m. hours. Winter duties must be carried out regularly at an earlier time to ensure required safety. In the evening this responsibility ends after the heavy traffic period, as a rule of thumb around 8 p.m.
Anyone failing to carry out their responsibilities, may be legally enforced to perform required snow removal or sanding. Also, bear in mind that if a person slips and is injured due to negligence of removing snow and ice, you can be held liable.
ABC IN KMC: St. Nicholas
by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
Saint Nicholas of Myra was an early Christian bishop born around 270 A.D. in the town of Patara, which is now in Türkiye. He is also known as Nicolas of Bari, as Patara was the capital of the Roman province of Lycia at that time.
He is mainly known for his acts of kindness and generosity and is vividly celebrated by children in Germany and other European countries. In addition, countless legends have evolved over the centuries and eventually led to the figure of “Santa Claus” in the late 1800s.
One famous story about Saint Nicholas involves a poor man with three daughters. He was unable to afford dowries for his daughters which meant that they might be forced into a life of servitude. Legend has it that Nicholas secretly visited their home on three individual nights and left a bag of gold coins for each daughter, enabling them to marry and enjoy a better future.
It is also said that he would place bags of nuts, tangerines or other goodies of the season on the doorsteps of poor families to help feed and raise the children. There is a further tale about miraculously saving the lives of countless fishermen on a stormy night at sea.
Saint Nicholas is also known for his role in the First Council
of Nicaea in 325 A.D. when he defended the doctrine of the Trinity against Arian heresy. This led to being imprisoned by Emperor Constantine (who was originally from Trier by the way) but was released in the end.
After his death on Dec. 6, 343 A.D., Nicholas was canonized as a saint and is celebrated on this date in many Christian traditions. Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of many groups, including sailors and fishermen, merchants and children. During the course of time, he has also become the patron saint of travelers, and some drivers place tokens depicting him on their dashboards or key chains for safe travels.
His legacy of generosity and compassion continues to inspire people around the world, especially in Europe.
In Germany, many children are excited when shining their shoes or boots on the evening of Dec. 5, in hopes that St. Nicholas will pay them a visit overnight, bringing candy, chocolate, nuts and tangerines. Some villages also have celebrations with a Saint Nicholas on a horse accompanied by bonfires, food and drink.
Surprisingly, Saint Nicholas, or Noel Baba, is still celebrated in Türkiye, in particular in the region around Myra (now called Demre) on the south-western coast. On
Dec. 6 there are ceremonies and processions at the Saint Nicholas Memorial Museum and a church in his honor. Traditionally, even nonChristians take part in some of the celebrations, as he is honored for his generosity and kindness beyond religious beliefs and as the guardian of seafarers.
In the Netherlands the figure is known as Sinterklaas and is celebrated with great enthusiasm beginning as early as mid-November. Sinterklaas arrives by steamboat from Spain and is often depict-
ed as a stately figure with a long white beard in bishop’s robes. He is accompanied by his helpers the Pieten, who fill shoes with sweets and small gifts.
Further up north in Scandinavian countries Saint Nicholas Day is also observed on Dec. 6 and traditions vary by region. In some areas, children leave out shoes or stockings to be filled. In Norway the figure of Nisse, a gnomelike creature, is said to live in barns and takes care of animals, but also brings small gifts to children.
In Denmark, Julemanden brings presents on Christmas Eve, but Saint Nicholas also makes a showing with smaller gifts on or about Dec. 6. It is heartwarming to see how Saint Nicholas’ legacy is still honored in his place of origin, but also brings joy to children and adults alike across continents.
Should you have failed to shine your shoes last night, try again this evening. At the mature age of 1,754 years, Nicholas may have “forgotten” the day and just might surprise you with treats in the morning.

USAFE-AFAFRICA Band, Latvian National Guard Orchestra build community in combined marching band
Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Eve Daugherty 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
The U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa Band formed a combined marching band with the Latvian National Guard Orchestra to support the Latvian Independence Day parade for the first time in the U.S. Air Force’s history in Riga, Latvia, Nov. 18.
The combined band marched approximately two kilometers during the parade through the streets of Riga. Thirteen allied nations total participated in the parade, which featured formations, heavy artillery and aircraft flyovers.
In preparation for the parade, the bands rehearsed together for three days to synchronize their movements, share marching techniques, and coordinate their performance to form one cohesive marching band. These efforts demonstrated strong friendships and the U.S.’s support for Latvia, said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Rafael Toro-Quinones, USAFEAFAFRICA Band commander.
“Through this historic collaboration, we are celebrating Latvian Independence and reaffirming the commitment of NATO allies to protect and promote our shared values,” Toro-Quinones said.
Toro-Quinones expressed that through the universal language
of music, U.S. and Latvian service members shared stories, customs and built trusting friendships. The bilateral performance demonstrated the dedicated collaboration and interoperability of the U.S. and Latvia.
“Today’s performance by the USAFE-AFAFRICA Band and the Latvian National Guard Orchestra is a testament to the deep-rooted partnership between our countries,” said Ambassador Christopher Robinson, U.S. Ambassador to Latvia.
Together the bands performed various Latvian musical selections, including “ZS Maršs,” a piece composed by Latvian National Guard
Maj. Andis Karelis, orchestra chief conductor and chief of the bands.
To further grow U.S. and Latvian connections, the USAFEAFAFRICA Band engaged with communities by performing for Latvian youth at local schools. Two performances at local schools in Riga were held to engage with students in the world of music.
“Music bridges cultures,” Toro-Quinones said. “Performing for local communities in allied nations is not just a cultural exchange, but also a powerful way to reassure audiences of the unwavering U.S. commitment to our collective security.”
In addition to educational out-
reach, band members appeared live on the TV3 Play Latvia news station. During the segment, ToroQuinones provided an interview to express the significance of the combined marching band effort, followed by a short performance by USAFE-AFAFRICA Band members.
Toro-Quinones emphasized music is a powerful expression of unity and the combined performance of the two bands highlights the U.S. and Latvian collective resolve to maintain peace and stability in the region.
“Through music, we honor our past while looking to our future of continued cooperation,” Robinson said.
Latvia National Guard Maj. Andis Karelis, orchestra chief conductor and chief of the bands, salutes during a marching band parade dress rehearsal in Riga, Latvia, Nov. 17. Karelis conducted the combined marching band, a bilateral effort of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa Band and the Latvia National Guard Orchestra to celebrate Latvian Independence Day.
The Freedom Monument stands in Riga, Latvia, Nov. 15. The monument symbolizes Latvian independence and was built by public donations in 1935 to honor those fallen in military conflicts for freedom.
Affirming Native voices: 21st TSC Warrant Officer reflects on childhood during Native American Heritage Month
by Brian Lamar 21st Theater Sustainment Command
Ten-year-old Soledad Zdunczyk watched everything she had ever known slowly sink into the asphalt horizon of the highway, as her mom pressed the gas pedal to head deep into Mexico to outrun her alcohol-laced demons.
Before her impromptu road trip, Zdunczyk’s old life had been a mixture of city life in Phoenix, Arizona, and the cultural immersion of her extended family’s Native American heritage.
“My family is part of the Pima Tribe. We would go to the Gila River Reservation, where much of my family lived. We would go to pow-wows and things like that. Mostly, I remember loving the music and food as a kid,” said Zdunczyk, now Chief Warrant Officer 2 Soledad Zdunczyk, the 16th Sustainment Brigade’s sustainment automation support management officer in charge.
Once she arrived at her new home in Colima, Mexico, as a young girl, she was thrust into a new life filled with foreign voices and foreign routines.
“When I started school in Colima, I didn’t speak Spanish. For the first few months, I was lost. Every day, we would get up very early and take our corn to the mill to get it ground. We would then bring it back to the house and start the process of making masa for our tortillas,” Zdunczyk explained.
Additionally, family members would occasionally take Zdunczyk to the local hillside to spend the day with the backbreaking task of picking coffee beans or shucking ears of corn.
Initially, life was difficult for Zdunczyk. On top of all the new challenges she faced, her mother didn’t succeed in outrunning her drinking problem.
“I would say it was hard growing up. I had nobody helping me along. Nobody was pushing me to do well in school or encouraging me to learn things,” she said.
Desperate to find some meaning in life and a way to earn a little bit of money, she found a creative outlet. Zdunczyk found that she had a niche talent for drawing intricate patterns with an ink pen on white pants. Word spread of her artistic talents and other children in her community began paying her for her talents.
Zdunczyk continued navigating her remote life until one day as quickly as they had moved South, she relocated back to the Phoenix area.
With new prospects in her mind, Zdunczyk began to excel in 8th grade with her grades reflecting a mixture of As and Bs. Things were going smoothly until her sophomore year. Zdunczyk’s childhood fantasy of being a WNBA player had been dashed by not making the high school team.
“I got really depressed because they didn’t choose me. I felt like my hopes and aspirations were gone. My grades started slipping,” she said.
After a semester of poor performance, Zdunczyk found traction. With new goals in mind, her grades improved until graduation. After high school, a determined Zdunczyk enrolled at DeVry University and majored in technical management while working two jobs to earn her way through school.
With a fresh degree in hand, Zdunczyk set out to start her new career.
“No one wanted to hire me. I had absolutely no experience. Eventually, I exhausted my search in the Phoenix area, and I relocated to Washington State with my husband to continue trying to find work in my field,” Zdunczyk said.
While the couple were in Washington, an uncle suggested that she join the military. In 2010, Zdunczyk took that advice and enlisted as a 25F, network switching systems operator maintainer, and later reclassed to a 94F, computer/detection systems repairer. Zdunczyk credits her Native American culture to help her become the Soldier she is today.
“I truly thank God for blessing me with a family that has always been closeknit, spending time together and visiting the reservation where warmth and love were always present. Also, learning that Ira Hayes was a distant cousin filled me with even more pride, and following in both my uncle’s footsteps to serve and defend our county has been an incredible honor,” Zdunczyk said.
According to Zdunczyk, she was happy as a Soldier but had the hunger for something more. The idea of becoming a warrant officer became a consideration one day when a maintenance warrant officer in her unit started encouraging her to apply.
“I became interested and looked into the requirements. I found that my ASVAB GT score wasn’t high enough,” she explained. “At that time, I was an NCO. I kept putting off studying to raise my score for quite some time because I was busy taking care of my Soldiers. In 2020, I got to my assignment at SHAPE Belgium. COVID hit. I was able to use that disruption in my work schedule to put in the extra effort and raise my score,” she said.
Zdunczyk’s application was granted, and she went to Warrant Officer training where she received her designation as a 255A, data operations warrant officer.
Now as the 16th SBDE SASMO, she is responsible for teaching classes on the VSAT/Scout or the Caisi system, providing dedicated automation support to troubleshoot network issues, and supporting the U.S. Army’s Logistics Information System.
“It is a little surreal being here because of the stuff I went through to try to get where I am. Looking back on my
Chief Warrant Officer 2 Soledad M. Zdunczyk, sustainment automation support officer in charge, 16th Sustainment Brigade, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, poses for a photo before her state flag on Smith Barracks, in Baumholder, Nov. 19. “This is important to me because, as a Native American Officer serving in the military, I represent a group that makes up just 1 percent, and within the total active component, we only make 0.9 percent,” said Zdunczyk. “It’s a chance to highlight our contributions and honor the strength and resilience of our people.”
life is interesting. I consider doing hard labor like I did as a child was actually easier than working with networks. It is like a complex puzzle. It is harder to figure out how the networks work than just getting up and doing labor, but I have no regrets,” she said.
Zdunczyk prides herself on being among the 8,000 Native Americans to serve in the military total force today, especially during National Native American Heritage Month.
“This is important to me because, as a Native American officer serving in the military, I represent a group that makes up just 1 percent, and within the total active component we only make 0.9 percent. It’s a chance to highlight our contributions and honor the strength and resilience of our people,” Zdunczyk said.
Zdunczyk plans to continue until retirement in six years and hopes to move back to the Phoenix area to get into politics. According to Zdunczyk, her ultimate goal would be to be elected as future Mayor of Phoenix.
As the U.S. Army commemorates National Native American Heritage Month, Zdunczyk wants to use this month to reflect on her early life and acknowledge the lasting contributions Native Americans make that will benefit the nation and the Army for many years to come.
“It’s an honor to represent my Pima Tribe (O’odham) and reflect on the painful chapters of our history. However, as we move forward, we can come together as a nation to celebrate our resilience, unity, and rich cultural heritage,” Zdunczyk said.

If you’re jonesing for good sports, good food, good beer — with maybe a dash of the great outdoors thrown in — then look no further!
If you’re like me, you live and breathe sports, especially when your team is on a heater. This year, for example, was incredible: I marveled at — from a distance — one of the more remarkable comeback seasons in Major League Baseball history: the New York Mets went from one of the worst teams in the major leagues to almost making it to the World Series through a series of late inning heroics.
My one regret: Living in Germany, it was darn near impossible to actually watch the Mets work their magic. If only I’d had a monster TV the size of an IMAX theatre on which to see their games!
Zuggy’s Base Camp Bar: A mustvisit for sports fans
Fortunately, help wasn’t far away. Zuggy’s Base Camp Bar, at the Edelweiss Lodge and Resort in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria, is easily Germany’s best sports bar. Zuggy’s boasts a monster 8K, 30-foot-long panoramic screen that stretches the full length of the establishment, as well as dozens of other high-definition TVs throughout the newly renovated and conceptualized hang-out.
If you can’t be at the game, watching it with 200 of your closest (albeit new) friends is the next best thing. The ability to put a single or multiple games on the huge screen in amazing clarity at once is a huge bonus for sports fans. Zuggy’s Base Camp Bar offers an amazing ambi ence in a beautiful location.
Spot-on beer selection
Another high point of Zuggy’s is their beer selection. Feel free, of course, to choose a brew you already know. But know this, too: Zuggy’s prides themselves on carry ing some of the best beer in Bavaria, which means it is also some of the best in the world. For instance, one of Zuggy’s featured beers is from the Ettal Monastery: The monks brew a recipe that has been around for ages and it is obvi ous why they have not changed it. Another featured beer is from Garmisch Brauhaus: The Edelweiss has an exclusively brewed “Bavarian Ale” (think IPA) for them. It easily rivals the best IPAs on the west coast.
Outstanding comfort food
While German food is solid, sometimes you yearn for the type of goodness that only comes from an American sports bar. We’re talking amazing burgers, steaks, wings, nachos — the works. Burgers at Zuggy’s are can’t-miss.
Zuggy’s hits a home run when it comes to American sports bar food. I highly recommend going for the Bacon Blue Burger with crispy bacon, a bigjuicy all-beef patty on a fluffy bun, and blue cheese sourced right from nearby Alps-based cheesemakers.
All about The Edelweiss Lodge
Aside from offering a luxury resort experience, The Edelweiss also offers amazing packages for all types – from adventurers to laid-back travelers. During the winter, ski/ board packages are the norm for guests, which can include complete learnto-ski/board programs. Summertime visitors can experience hiking, biking, boating and tours of historic Bavarian landmarks.
A trip, whether it is a short weekend trip or a full-length vacation just below the great Zugspitze (Germany’s highest peak) will definitely be one of the highlights of your time in Europe. And if you are a sports fan, you may want to consider booking a trip around your team’s next game (or series of games). The best part…you might even see your beleaguered crew of bums rise up to the championship game on a 30-foot screen!

Getting to The Edelweiss Lodge and Zuggy’s By car, the Edelweiss Lodge is 4.5 hours from Kaiserslautern, 3 hours from Stuttgart or Grafenwoehr, and just less than 5 hours from Wiesbaden. Please check with Deutsche Bahn for train options.
