Nation’s leaders honor fallen heroes

To Gold Star family members and everyone mourning a fallen American hero today, please know that we bow our heads in sorrow along with you, Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III said.

Austin, President Joe Biden and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Air Force Gen. CQ Brown, Jr., provided remarks today at a Memorial Day observance at Arlington National Cemetery.

“We know that you live with loss every day and not just Memorial Day,” Austin continued.

Defending our republic carries risk and that goes beyond the dangers of combat. By necessity, military training is hard and challenging. “Our operations worldwide can put our troops in harm’s way,” he said.

Also, we lose too many of our veterans to suicide, he added.

Troops and their families don’t just sacrifice during wartime. Troops often go on long deployments. “They know the pride that never fades and the worry that never leaves,” Austin said.

Brown said we are here today to honor those who were wearing the uniform when they gave their lives for our nation and its ideals.

He noted that Arlington National Cemetery is the final resting place of over 400,000 of the fallen.

“Every stone marker represents someone who wore the uniform who answered the call of duty, who when the nation asked, ‘who will go for us?’ They responded. ‘Send me.’” Brown said.

HISTORY CORNER

D-Day June 6, 1944

Yesterday, eighty years ago, Royal Air Force Air Chief Marshal Sir Trafford Leigh-Mallory, air commander for the Allied Invasion of Normandy, ordered all Allied aircraft be painted with black and white stripes for easy identification from the ground and in the air. Due to lessons learned, for Normandy, LeighMallory ordered alternating stripes of black and white on the wings and fuselage, 18 inches wide for single engine aircraft, 24 inches wide for twin engine aircraft, dubbed “invasion stripes.” Stripes were applied with a paintbrush in no formal manner, no stencils or in super straight lines. This week, for D-Day 80 commemorations, the 37th Airlift Squadron, who flew unarmed C-47s directly into enemy fire as the 37th Troop Carrier Squadron, are adorned with the invasion stripes, by 1944 specifications, along with their unit designator, “Whiskey Seven,” seen on the aircraft as “W7.” Also see photo pages 6 – 7. “The world must know what happened, and never forget.” – Dwight D. Eisenhower.

30th Medical Brigade makes history in Europe with US Army Reserve during Defender 2024

30th Medical Brigade, 21st Theater Sustainment Command in collaboration with the 810th Hospital Center, 75th Field Hospital, 7455th Medical Operations Unit and Medical Readiness Training Command successfully completed the final testing portion of the hospital exercise utilizing a 32-bed field hospital issued from an Army Prepositioned Stocks site in Germany for the first time in Europe, from April 29 – May 26, enhancing the readiness and capabilities of NATO medical capabilities.

As many historical firsts have taken place during Defender 2024 in the high north with newly established NATO allies, Finland and Sweden, right here within Germany the 30th MED BDE., 21st TSC makes Army medicine history with their Army Reserve partners utilizing a field hospital and all of its components completely from Army Prepositioned Stocks.

“We were able to draw from our Reserve Soldiers from all over the Southeast region of the U.S.,” said Col. Saul Weinreb, commander, 810th HC. “Mostly from Alabama and Georgia, but we have a contingent from Topeka, Kansas. All of us gathered together, we flew here to Germany, had an advanced team come and pull the stocks from APS, and in about 60 hours we have everything you see in front of you set up and ready to see, receive, and treat patients.”

Weinreb is not only the leader of his hospital center, but is an obstetrician gynecologist by trade within his home city of Birmingham, Alabama. Just a few weeks ago he was performing his day job like the rest of the citizen Soldiers in his unit, and now he is here conducting realistic medical training with European allies and partners. Not only did his unit leave their jobs to conduct this training all the way in Europe, but the team did it with other units they’ve never trained or operated with, constructing a field

hospital to standard using equipment that’s not their own, in only two and a half days.

According to Col. Ross Witters, deputy chief surgeon, United States Army Europe and Africa, the impact of this exercise is not just about this being a medical first, but the collaboration of different medical units training together for the first time utilizing a field hospital with equipment that they are not used to utilizing on a regular basis.

“The U.S. Army has been providing health care and Army medicine for more than 200 years,” said Witters.

“Setting up a hospital isn’t really the new part. The new part is the speed, rapidity, and projection. The fact that this hospital was pulled off the shelf, and we unwrap it and set it up, with a conglomerate of medical professionals in different terrain and with systems and personnel we haven’t trained with is powerful. The idea is having the ability to project that power from thousands of miles from where we all live and put it anywhere and have a hospital within three days. That’s what makes this unique.”

Everything within the hospital exercise was organized to simulate realistic scenarios involving the treatment of injuries, conducting surgeries and providing critical care to patients. Additionally, the exercise included the practice of patient transportation and evacuation using military medical evacuation capabilities. A lot of the training is done repetitively to create muscle memory to ensure if called upon the joint medical staff is ready to deal with patients in any scenario, whether it is during conflict or a humanitarian crisis.

“Having been a battalion surgeon and a brigade surgeon I will tell you combat training is vital,” said Witters.

“We constantly train for war with the hopes we never have to go to war.

But, when you do have to go to war, if you have not trained and built that muscle memory and know how to respond in a crisis, you’re going to be caught flat-footed. Training helps us develop muscle memory, experience, and readiness to identify where we need to improve or learn the capabilities we need to succeed on the battlefield.”

30th Medical Brigade, alongside their partners and Allies, have been in charge of medical planning and sustainment for a myriad of medical training and real-world operations in this theater as high north as Norway and as far south to the African continent in the country of Ghana. The team put emphasis on just how important medical readiness is within this ever-changing theater, throughout the entire exercise.

Maj. Gen. Ronald Ragin, commanding general, 21st TSC, decided to bring that emphasis a bit closer to home, with the realities of certain current events and lessons learned from what the world is witnessing on the battlefield during the Ukraine conflict.

“In Ukraine they’re having to[distribute medical]care more at the point of need,” said Ragin. “Even your evacuation assets are being targeted. Shelters like this out in the open[isn’t survivable]. If you can be found it can be targeted. We have to ensure this is concealed and survivable. We’ve got to think through those things.”

Ragin, who has served with the Security Assistance Group – Ukraine, consistently informs the medics and sustainers within the erected field hospital that we should all be learning from the operations and lessons we’re learning from the conflict in Ukraine, which is how to operate in a contested environment. Additionally, the senior logistician felt we were in great hands with the young Soldiers and NonCommissioned Officers conducting operations together for the first time, as that will be the reality in a crisis situation, but we also must understand we can’t operate without our Allies, partners and Army Reserve Soldiers.

“We don’t do anything without our coalition partners, and we don’t do anything without our Reserve,” said Ragin. “For the U.S. military most of our medical assets, approximately 68 percent, I believe is in the COMPO 3[Army Reserve]. The specialty care that you give, I’m super proud of you. Those young Soldiers that were briefing me, junior enlisted Soldiers, those E-3’s and E-4’s on the complexity of what you do are truly amazing.”

DEFENDER is a Dynamic Employment of Forces to Europe for NATO Deterrence and Enhanced Readiness, and is a U.S. European Command scheduled, U.S. Army Europe and Africa conducted exercise that consists of Saber Strike, Immediate Response, and Swift Response. DEFENDER 24 is linked to NATO’s Steadfast Defender exercise, and DOD’s Large Scale Global Exercise, taking place from 28 March to 31 May. DEFENDER 24 is the largest U.S. Army exercise in Europe and includes more than 17,000 U.S. and 23,000 multinational service members from more than 20 Allied and partner nations, including Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Georgia, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz

The Department of Defense announced the winners of the 2023 DOD Fire and Emergency Services Awards, recognizing exceptional achievements by its fire departments, fire officers, and firefighters, May 3.

Representatives from the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Air Force, and Defense Logistics Agency, comprising the DOD F&ES Working Group, chose nine winners from a pool of 41 nominations.

Among this year’s winners were Deputy Fire Chief Adam J. Montoya

and Interim Training Chief Tobias Lang from U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz.

Lt. Col. David Castillo, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz director of emergency services and garrison provost marshal, said that both Montoya and Lang were honored by the recognition.

“They are very humble guys,”

he said, “they won because they are incredibly hard working, innovative, and committed to enhancing the professionalism and performance of this Fire Department.”

Deputy Fire Chief Adam J. Montoya received the Civilian Fire Officer of the Year award for his management of the Army’s largest fire department in Europe. He oversaw six fire stations, two dispatch centers, and 235 firefighters, protecting 40,000 individuals and $13 billion in assets without any fire loss. Montoya also authored a significant mutual aid agreement between the United States and host nation partners and established a training alliance with host nation responders, along with reciprocal arrangements with the German Red Cross.

Interim Training Chief Tobias Lang was honored as the Fire Service Instructor of the Year for his management of the training program for 235 firefighters. He supervised 1,200 classes and 5,000 hours of training, resulting in zero fire loss and maintain -

ing mission readiness to protect $13 billion in assets. Lang also designed the department’s rookie training program, established a working group on active shooter situations, and conducted training exercises with school emergency management/crisis intervention teams and military police responders to enhance prevention, mitigation, and response for such incidents.

“I think above all, they won because of their dedication to this community and garrison,” Castillo said. “They are genuine professionals who deeply care.”

The U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz’s Fire Department earned the opportunity to represent the Installation Management Command in the F&ES Awards competition by winning the Best Large Fire Department category at the IMCOM level earlier this year. Montoya and Lange were similarly acknowledged as the best in IMCOM in their respective categories of Civilian Fire Officer and Fire Service Instructor.

In the air, across cultures: Army Reserves Nurse connects with partner nations at TRADEWINDS 24

Sgt. Karinna Matthews is used to seeing the world from the air. When she’s not caring for patients as a nurse in the 328th Field Support Hospital, 330th Medical Brigade, 807th Medical Command (Deployment Support), she spends her days as a helicopter tour pilot, excited to share the joy of aviation with others. When she arrived in Barbados for TRADEWINDS 24, she did not expect the chance to nourish her love of rotary aviation, but she would come to be pleasantly surprised.

Matthews, the daughter of Colombian immigrants, grew up speaking multiple languages every day, so being at TW24 brought valuable skills that increased partnership and operational reach.

“I love being here. There are so many varied cultures here,

everyone is working and joking together, it’s like being home visiting my family.” She was able to use her language skills to help serve patients at Paragon’s Troop Medical Clinic, as well as to connect with partner forces as she spent time in camp and around the island in various training events.

Her ability to bridge language gaps with military counterparts from multiple nations led Matthews to an experience few Americans had during TW24, the opportunity to ride in a Mexican helicopter. During medical training with the Barbados Defence Force, Matthews met members of the Mexican naval Urban Search and Rescue team. They introduced her to Ensign Alan Pérez, an AS565 MBe Panther pilot for the Mexican navy.

After hearing she was a pilot, Pérez obtained permission and offered Matthews the opportunity

to take a short ride. Matthews recounted the experience, her first in a military aircraft, as familiar but with a new twist, “They did all the pre-checks, the start-ups were all the same, all the aviation electronics inside were in English. But when we landed on the ship, docked at Pelican Coast Guard Station, it was a completely new experience for me. It was such a small landing zone and seeing all the guys rush out with their straps was really exciting.”

Pérez, who landed Matthews on the Mexican naval patrol vessel ARM Guanajuato (PO-153), said that for him and his crew, meeting her was surprising. “We are not used to seeing women who fly helicopters in Mexico. It was a great experience because she understood everything we said, she had complete knowledge of all helicopter functions and operations.”

Matthews said that her experience in the air with Mexican partners and all her time at TW24 illustrated for her how much the allied partners who participated have

more in common than not. “When you talk to them and get to know them and their experiences, we are all really the same, and that’s what I loved about Tradewinds.”

USAG RP celebrates AAPI

Heritage

Month with stories of resilience, cultural tributes

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz held an Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month event at the Hall of Champions on Smith Barracks, Baumholder, May 23.

AAPI Heritage Month is celebrated every May in the United States. This month-long celebration recognizes the contributions and influence of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States.

Deputy Garrison Manager Jae Kim spoke during today’s event, talking about his personal experience as an Asian-American.

“My family moved from South Korea to Tacoma, Washington, in 1977 when I was 13 years old, along with my six other siblings and our grandmother — 10 of us,” he said. “I have been serving as an Army and Air Force Civilian since 1988 and it has been a whirlwind of an experience having spent time in both East and West Coast of the United States as well as overseas in Korea and now in Germany.”

Kim said that, over the years, there were many challenges he and his family had to overcome, but he always tried to prioritize three main things to achieve his goals and dreams: caring for himself by taking care of his physical and mental health; caring for others through listening to what others have to say and treating everyone with dignity and respect; and by having a strong commitment to achievement — working hard, being persistent and bouncing back whenever he failed.

‘Advancing Leaders Through Innovation’ is the theme for the 2024 Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

The celebration originated in 1977 when a congressional bill was introduced to proclaim the first ten days of May as Asian-Pacific Heritage Week. In 1990, the observance was expanded to the entire month of May, and in 1992, it was officially

designated as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

The month of May was chosen to commemorate the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to honor the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869, a project in which Chinese immigrants played a crucial role.

“As we celebrate the service of Asian American and Pacific Islanders, I encourage everyone to focus on the value that different backgrounds, experiences and cultures bring to our nation and our Army,” said Kim. “Our strength lies in our diversity and the unity of our vision. We all embrace the same Army values, and we all serve the same great nation.”

Throughout May, various events and activities are held to celebrate AAPI cultures, including festivals, educational programs, art exhibitions, and community gatherings. These events showcase the diverse traditions, foods, music, and art of AAPI communities.

AAPI Heritage Month highlights the significant contributions of AAPI individuals in various fields such as science, technology, politics, arts, and civil rights. It is a time to acknowledge and celebrate their rich heritage and the impact they had on American society, recognizing their vital role in shaping the history and future of the United States.

During the day’s event, many performers took the stage to celebrate by dancing in different styles, showcasing the diverse cultures of the AAPI community.

“Our increasingly complex global responsibilities require that we not only acquire people with different experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds, but also invest in the development and employment of our Soldiers and Civilians,” said Kim. “We bring people together to serve a common purpose and accomplish shared goals, recognizing the talents of those who, as Gen. Shinseki said, ‘have written boldly across the pages of our military history since the early 19th century.’”

To mark the occasion, the Pfalzphilharmonie KL, will perform his 4th Symphony, which the composer himself called the “Romantic”, in a special concert. GACO CORNER: Having a dog in Germany

Germany is a great place to enjoy life with dogs. Germans love their pets, but there are many different rules for dog owners that Americans may not be aware of before moving to the Kaiserslautern Military Community. The German American Community Office has put together some important information

Leashing dogs

The Office of Public Order (Ordnungsamt) reminds dog owners that they need to keep their dogs on a leash inside developed areas in community limits at all times. Outside developed areas, dogs must be automatically put on a leash in case of other persons approaching. Violations against these rules may be punished by fines up to €5,000.

The pollution of public places, in particular parks and playgrounds,

with dog feces is on the rise, creating a health hazard particularly to children and a nuisance to the inhabitants as well as the community workers required to clean the litter.

Quiet hours

Dog barking has to be kept at a minimum. During quiet hours between 10 p.m.–6 a.m. and 1 –3 p.m. hours, dog owners must ensure that neighbors are not disturbed by barking, whining or howling. Outside these hours, dog owners must ensure that dog noises do not last longer than 10 minutes consecutively, respectively exceed 30 minutes cumulatively per day. If necessary, the dogs have to be kept inside the house in accordance with animal protection laws.

Keeping dogs in kennels or on chains

Chaining on a light chain (not more than 3.2 mm wire thickness) with two swivel joints on

a rope of at least 6 m in length with room to move at both sides of at least 2.5 m. A broad, not strangling collar or harness is prescribed by law.

When the dog is kept in a kennel, the kennel has to be at least 6 square meters in size not taking into consideration the shelter and board to rest. When more than one dog is kept in the kennel, at least three additional square meters have to be available for each dog.

One side of the kennel has to provide free sight to the outside.

Chaining of a dog inside the kennel is prohibited. The dog has to be walked for several times a day when kept in a kennel, a chained dog has to be walked for at least one hour per day. This is also applicable for dogs kept in stables, barns, storage rooms etc.

An insulated shelter (hut) suitable for the size of the dog has to be provided. This hut is to be kept clean and dry. The bottom of the kennel is to be prepared in a way

that water can drain off or ooze away. The interior of the kennel is also to be kept clean, dry and free of parasites.

A resting board has to be available outside the hut. To protect the dog against excessive heat or sun, a place in the shade outside the hut has to be available.

Daily feeding and always a sufficient amount of fresh water have to be ensured. The owner is to check whether the dog is okay at least once a day.

The German Animal Protection Law, requires that “People keeping, caring for or having to care for an animal are not allowed to limit the animals opportunity for species-spe cific movement in a way that the animal suffers from pain, diseases or injuries.”

If this law is violated a prison sentence of up to three years or

fines of up to €25.000 will be imposed.

For more information, you can reach out to the GACO via email at info@gaco-kl.de or call 0631 363 301 0.

ABC IN KMC: Fritz, Fussball, Fiesta

Germany is the host of the European Soccer Championship this year, with the first of 51 matches in Munich against Scotland June 14. While the Federal Republic has a successful history in terms of Europe’s most popular ball game, it also brought about a number of world class players, such as Franz Beckenbauer, who recently passed away. But, did you know that one of the most prominent soccer players came from nearby Kaiserslautern?

Fritz Walter and his brother Ottmar were born and raised in Alsenborn. They came to fame as prominent German soccer players in the 1950’s. Together with Horst Eckel of Vogelbach, they starred in the World Soccer Cup in 1954 when Germany won the championship. They not only brought fame to themselves, but shaped following generations of dedicated and passionate soccer fans in Kaiserslautern and the region, sometimes referred to as the “red devils” based on their red team color.

Not known by many, Fritz was drafted into the German Wehrmacht at Daenner Kaserne in 1940, stationed at various bases around Europe and eventually served in the 2nd Company Fortress Battalion 902, responsible for Sardinia and Corsica. During his time in service, he had a very adventurous time as soccer player and played in various formations as “guest player” with the 1. Fussball Club Kaiserslautern (1. FCK).

In 1945 he was taken as a prisoner of war, encamped in Romania, and according to his autobiography, a severe case of

malaria and an impromptu soccer game with two camp guards, saved him from being deported to Siberia.

Upon his return, he played on various teams in southwest Germany, then with the 1. FCK and was appointed as team captain of the German national team.

About this time, he met Italia from Belluno, Italy, discovered another passion and married her in 1948.

Though he was first criticized just shortly after the war and Italy being Germany’s most feared competitor, fans soon found a special place in their hearts for Italia as well.

The zenith of his career was Germany’s World Championship in Switzerland in 1954 when they scored the winning goal six minutes before the end of the match against England and is commonly called the “Miracle of Bern.” The team is still referred to as the “Walter Elf” and the formation “Elf

Freunde” (eleven friends) was erected with statues of him and his teammates in a traffic circle leading to the stadium, close to the train station in Kaiserslautern.

Italia died after over 50 years of marriage in 2001 and Fritz once stated that this was the most tragic day of his life. Luckily, he was able to hand sign a bronze soccer ball placed at the Kaiserbrunnen at Mainzer Tor in Kaiserslautern. He also passed away just a year later at the age of 82 and it is said that it was because of his broken heart. He was placed in an honorary grave next to his beloved wife Italia at the main cemetery near Daenner Kaserne.

It is unfortunate that he didn’t live to see Kaiserslautern as the venue of the 2006 Soccer World Cup in Germany. Kaiserslautern

was the smallest of the 12 cities to host games and during four weeks from June to July the city turned into one colorful festival which Fritz would have loved to see. Autobahn A6 was widened to three lanes, construction and beautification projects were carried out throughout the city. Betzenberg stadium was enlarged to meet FIFA standards and renamed “FritzWalter-Stadion” in his honor.

Players and fans from around the globe began to flock to the city, the U.S. team, that scored a tie against Italy, was accommodated at Ramstein Air Base. Sheiks from Saudi Arabia were flown in with helicopters, the king and queen of Spain were welcomed at the DV Ramp at Ramstein Air Base, and shuttles from the base to the stadium were run to avoid traffic chaos.

The whole city turned into one big fiesta with great weather, daily parades took place with the countries playing showcasing their talent with drum groups or cheerful dance ensembles and typical music. Trinidad and Tobago paraded through the city in exotic and colorful costumes resembling dragon flies. It is said that there were more (plastic inflatable) kangaroos on the streets than in Australia and fans of countries from around the world celebrated peacefully with colorful flags for four weeks, and at times there were more guests than the 100,000 inhabitants of Kaiserslautern. The championship was topped off by Germany again winning at the finals in Berlin July 9, 2006. Germany is already setting up for the UEFA EM 2024 events with the kick-off in Munich June 14. The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin will be turned into a giant soccer goal, the street leading up to it will be covered with artificial grass, and hundreds of thousands of soccer enthusiasts are expected to be infected with Fussballfieber. Whether Germany wins the European championship in Berlin July 14 is yet to be seen, but fans can look forward to a lively and exiting four weeks of fussball, fun and fiesta!

contains the largest nature reserve on the Baltic coast, filled with cliffs, lagoons, incredible dunes, and spits (which are narrow sand formations that snake outward toward the sea). Here are four tips for making your trip to Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park a memorable one.

See the park by boat

Since 80 percent of the park is water, a boat offers a fantastic way to see it. The place is famous for its marine life: it contains endangered species like the common harbor porpoise and the gray seal, and has more than 160 species of birds. Speaking of birds: every August, Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park transforms into Europe’s largest roosting spot for cranes. More than 30,000 of the enormous winged creatures arrive every year. The sights — and the sounds — are legendary.

There are strict rules on where you can sail, and how close to the shore you can get. But access is allowed in some parts of the park for sailboats and motorboats. The best way to see it, though, is via a kayak tour. It’s an awesome way to spend a few hours, but make sure you pick a day that isn’t too windy!

Walk along the beach and through the woods Western Pomerania Lagoon Area

National Park has no shortage of amazing walking opportunities. Strolling along the Baltic coast is endlessly fascinating. Shells, seaweed, driftwood, random marine creatures washed up on the shore — it’s kind of a wonderland. On stormy days, it’s also amazing. You can feel like a rugged sailor — spitting rain in your face, churning waves, the whole deal — without worrying about being shipwrecked.

There are also many other great walking trails, all of them extremely well signposted. Venture deep into the woodlands, where beautiful alder forests grow between sand dunes and swamps. Take a guided tour through the Daras Forest, which is the largest unbroken stretch of forest in the park. You won’t be disappointed.

If you’re looking for a challenge, try the Dornbusch Hiking Trail. Generally regarded as the most difficult trail in the park (and it isn’t that difficult), the loop is just shy of five kilometers and usually takes a bit more than an hour to complete. The views are amazing, as is the bird watching. Dogs are allowed on this trail, but must be kept on a leash.

Go fishing on one of the park’s many beaches

If you like to fish, you’ll love Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park. If you’re not into fishing, then this is a good place to give it a go! The best part? You have a real shot at never catching the same type of fish twice. The park contains nearly 50

species of fish, which reflects the diversity of the environment: there are many different currents, water depths, water temperatures, and salt levels.

In logical German fashion, catch and release fishing is prohibited. If you catch something, you need to be prepared to make a meal out of it. So bring cooking equipment, too! Or at least a cooler to transport your dinner back to your kitchen.

Watch the world go by at one of the park’s renowned vantage points

Sunsets (as long as the clouds cooperate) do not disappoint at Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park. Sunrises are too. Sometimes, the clouds put on amazing shows. You could do worse than to just spend an hour or two watching the world go by at the park.

The first great place to do this is Pramort. This jaw-dropping series of sand dunes (more than 40 feet high, in some places) has observation decks to protect the fragile vegetation that grows in the dunes.

The Höhe Dune, which is the largest unforested dune field on the Baltic coast, is even cooler. Follow the wood walkways to observation decks and just take in the scenery as you walk. An unforgettable experience.

Getting to Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park

By car, the park is approximately 8 hours from Kaiserslautern and Stuttgart, and just over 7 hours from Wiesbaden.
