On the evening of June 6, 1944, President Franklin D. Roosevelt broadcast a prayer for the Nation. At the time, war was raging in Europe, and Hitler controlled most of it. Freedom and democracy were under assault around the world. But on that day, hope had landed on the beaches of Normandy when 73,000 Americans joined the Allied forces to carry out one of the greatest military missions of all time — a mission that would become known as D-Day. Knowing the fate of the free world rested in their hands, President Roosevelt asked our Nation to pray for these courageous service members’ strength as they “set upon a mighty endeavor, a struggle to preserve our Republic, our religion, and our civilization, and to set free a suffering humanity.” On the 80th anniversary of D-Day, may we thank

these service members for their bravery and sacrifice. May we honor their heroism, which liberated a continent and saved the world. And may we recommit to the future they fought and which many died for.

The brave Airmen, Coast Guardsmen, Sailors, Soldiers, and Marines who fought on D-Day faced unparalleled resistance. Nazi Germany had reinforced the Atlantic Wall, lining miles of dangerous cliffs and rocky coastlines with landmines, beach and water obstacles, and machine gunners while also reinforcing its bunkers. So, when 7,000 vessels carrying nearly 160,000 service members from eight Allied countries approached Normandy, victory was never guaranteed. Our paratroopers that jumped behind enemy lines in the night and other military forces

had to endure barrages of gunfire, trek through barbed wire, and climb steep sea walls. Over 2,500 Americans made the ultimate sacrifice, giving their lives so that the whole world might know freedom.

Today, we remember all the Americans who laid down their lives on D-Day to help end the tyranny of fascism across Europe, liberate oppressed peoples, and ensure the flame of liberty would burn bright around the world. Their success marked the beginning of the end of Nazi brutality, World War II, and the Holocaust — one of the darkest chapters in human history. It set the foundations of an enduring peace that still helps guide international cooperation and affairs today. We owe these service members, who represent the greatest of the Greatest Generation, as well as

their families a debt of gratitude that we can never fully repay.

As we reflect on the sacrifices made on D-Day, we are reminded that freedom is not free and it has never been guaranteed. Every generation has to earn it, fight for it, and defend it in the battle between autocracy and democracy — between the greed of a few and the rights of many. Eighty years after our Nation’s brave Airmen, Coast Guardsmen, Sailors, Soldiers, and Marines embarked on D-Day — and as Americans everywhere answered the call to prayer and filled their hearts and homes with hope — may we honor the faith they kept in our Nation and their legacy by upholding the future that they died for — one grounded in freedom, democracy, opportunity, and equality for all.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 6, 2024, as a National Day of Remembrance of the 80th Anniversary of D-Day. I call upon all Americans to observe this day with programs, ceremonies, and activities that honor those who fought and died so that men and women they had never met might know what it is to be free.

COMMENTARY: National Day of

The U.S. flag sways in the sky with the provincial flag of Normandy at Omaha Beach in commemoration of the 80th anniversary of D-Day, France, June 2. By never forgetting what happened here eight decades ago, we pay fitting tribute to the D-Day and World War II veterans as we preserve their heritage to secure a future of peace and security in the Euro-Atlantic area.

Once you have found the right home, the next step is to walk in to get your rental agreement certified by our office.

DOD Members, please DO NOT sign the rental agreement. You will sign the agreement after KMC Housing Office – Referral Section has reviewed it.

Walk-in Review and Certification: You will bring the original contract signed by the Landlord to the Vogelweh Housing Office during our walk-in hours: Monday to Thursday: 8-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. and Friday: 8-11 a.m. and 1-2 p.m. We are closed the 2nd Wednesday of each month for training and on U.S. and German holidays. You will be signed in to complete a same day contract finalized review and certification. This could take time and you should be prepared to spend time waiting. On Mondays and the day after a holiday, our office can be extremely busy and we may ask you to return during a different time frame. You are then ready to reside in the great Kaiserslautern Military Community.

ENERGY TIP OF THE WEEK

» Keep your fridge or freezer 3/4 full at all times. Because the food in your refrigerator has already been cooled, it helps keep the other items cold when you open the door and introduce warm air. So if your fridge and freezer aren’t full enough, those appliances have to work harder to stay cold every time the door opens.

» On the other hand, try not to overfill your fridge, either. Too much food stuffed inside there will restrict the air flow and, in some cases, block your refrigerator’s air vents, which will keep the appliance from properly cooling everything inside (and, unfortunately, potentially cause your food items to spoil if they don’t stay cold enough).

USAG Rheinland-Pfalz breaks ground for tomorrow Baumholder’s innovative elementary school project begins

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz, along with the Department of Defense Education Activity Europe, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District, and local government officials came together to hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Baumholder Elementary School on Wetzel Kaserne, May 29.

The event featured speeches from various leaders and marks the beginning of construction on the new school, scheduled for completion in summer 2027.

“This groundbreaking is another victory for the Baumholder Community,” said Col. Reid Furman, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz commander, “another victory for all those who fought to maintain and promote this amazing military community.”

Furman noted that today’s event is the third groundbreaking for the Baumholder community,

following the recent ones for the new Army Lodge and new housing.

“This is another achievement for those who live here and have witnessed Baumholder’s transition,” he said. “We are committed to continuing our investment into this community.”

Furman said that today’s groundbreaking represents more than just a construction project; it symbolizes the lasting partnership between the United States and Germany and a joint commitment to creating brighter futures for future generations.

“This school, once completed, will be a beacon of learning, innovation, and community spirit,” he said. “It will provide a nurturing environment where young minds can flourish, equipped with the knowledge and skills to lead us into tomorrow.”

Furman added that while today’s event represents a leap forward in educational infrastructure it is also a symbolic step in the legacy of Smith Elementary School, which has served gen-

erations of families, including his own, as his wife, Julia, attended Smith Elementary school as a first grader in 1986, when stationed in Baumholder with her family.

Arleigh Smith, a fifth grader at Smith Elementary School and Anchored 4 Life student leader, said that Smith Elementary has helped her grow as a leader, as a student, and as a person.

“Smith Elementary is special,” she said. “Here, every decision I make, I am supported. This school helped me learn more about myself and the people around me, giving me the chance to be the leader I am today.”

Dr. Michelle HowardBrahaney, DODEA-Europe director of Student Excellence, said that the new school will help students achieve excellence in education.

“Alongside our partners, we will continue to set conditions for student success, bringing a bright future to generations yet to come,” she said. “In this 21stcentury school, technology will connect hand in hand with tradition. Here, students will not merely learn; they will thrive.”

The 21st-century school, costing $64.7 million and spanning 135,200 square feet, is designed to accommodate 700 students from preschool through fifth grade. It emphasizes flexible spaces and a global-classroom concept, aligning with DODEA’s goal of integrating technology to enhance teaching and learning.

The future Baumholder Elementary School will not only support the 21st-century teaching and learning model but also incorporate sustainability and energy-saving concepts. Once completed, Baumholder Elementary School will replace Smith Elementary School, which was established in 1952 and named after WWII Captain Harold D. Smith. Smith ES currently serves students of military and Civilian personnel from the local U.S. military communities of Baumholder and Ramstein Air Base, as well as students from in the bus zoning villages of Baumholder schools.

Soldier achieves Olympic spot in steeplechase, credits Army with success

With a standing start, the Soldier hyper focuses on the 914mm high fixed barriers and seven water jumps he needs to clear in the 3000-m steeplechase to secure his Olympic dream.

Sgt. Anthony Rotich, a chemical equipment repairman assigned to the World Class Athlete Program at Fort Carson, Colorado, is the man to beat going into the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Track and Field in Eugene, Oregon, June 21-30.

Rotich achieved the Olympic Standard in the 3,000-m steeplechase event and ranked number one in the men’s division in the U.S. His first mile time was 4:21 and overall finish was 8 minutes 13:74 seconds in Monaco, France. The Olympic qualification standard time for Paris in this event is 8 minutes 15 seconds.

“It feels good having the standard going into the trials. I just need to be top three,” he said with a smile. “Most people are worrying about racing and getting their time, but I already have that. I can focus on the trials.

Journey begins

Growing up in Eldoret, Kenya, Rotich ran four miles each way to school every day with no shoes. During lunchtime, he would run back to his village, eat, and then run back to school.

“At the end of the day, you would be running 12 to 16 miles a day. In my community, everybody is a runner,” he said with a quick smile.

Growing up in Kenya, students like Rotich didn’t focus on one sport but played every sport they could in each sport season.

“When it’s track, everybody does track. When it’s soccer, everybody does soccer at that time. You’re everywhere,” he said enthusiastically.

Coming from a family of eight with little money, Rotich wanted to go to college and started looking into scholarships so he could take care of his family. He began training for a time trial. Coaches in Kenya will perform these trials and send times and information about athletes to college scouts.

“I ran the time trial barefoot. I didn’t have shoes,” he said. Rotich said he didn’t learn that a U.S. college coach wanted him until two weeks later.

“I didn’t have a phone. I was back in my village,” he said. “A lot of people were coming all the way to the village to look for me. It took them awhile. I said yes to

That opportunity was the University of Texas, El Paso, where he became a 4-time NCAA national champion and 11-time All American. He became a USATF cross country gold medalist in 2020 and finished third in the USA Track & Field national cross-country championships in 2023 with a time of 28:49. He previously placed 13th in the 2021 Olympic Trials for the 3,000-mm steeplechase.

He’s one of only three runners in NCAA history to win the 3,000meter steeplechase national title three years in a row.

When he won his national accolades, he said he texted his dad. While his dad was proud of him, he keeps him grounded and focused.

“I sent a text to my dad, telling him I had won nationals,” he said. “My dad sent a text back saying, ‘That’s nice. OK, now how is your GPA?’"

Rotich graduated college with a degree in civil engineering, won numerous academic awards and was named the NCAA Division 1 men’s cross-country ScholarAthlete of the Year.

“My parents were much happier about me winning the scholar-athlete award than they were about any of my national championships,” he said.

Once he got off the phone with his father, Wilson Boit, his hero, gave him a call.

“My hero is a guy from my village,” Rotich said. Boit grew up 20 miles from Rotich’s village.

Boit won silver for Kenya at the Sydney, Australia, Summer Olympic games in 2000, competing in the 3,000-meter steeplechase event. Three years earlier on Aug. 13, 1997, Boit held the world record in the event with a time of 7 minutes 59.08 seconds. The record

was broken 11 days later.

Boit called Rotich to congratulate him on his victory, but also to ask about his GPA.

“He and my father value education more than athletics,” Rotich said. “He is one of the great leaders in my community.”

Army

After winning 63 races for the University of Texas at El Paso and 19 Conference USA championships, Rotich decided he wanted to give back to the country that helped him achieve his collegiate dreams.

“I saw how my life has been and the chance I was given to get a scholarship. I was like, ‘It’s time to give back to this community that invested in me,’” Rotich said.

He went to basic training and technical training in 2019. While in his unit, one of his sergeants told him about the World Class Athlete Program.

“It’s opened doors for me. It’s improved my running,” he said. When he started running with the other elite Soldier athletes, he was running 30 miles a week. Now he runs 90 miles a week with them. He also overcame a medical injury from the hurdles.

“I got injured, and it took me two years to fully recover but I’m happy I’m in the Army. The Army, the medical facility they have, the WCAP program, they take care of you,” he said.

Although Rotich has been an athlete on some level all his life, he said he knew the Army would help him increase his mental strength.

“When I joined the Army, I knew the Army would give me an advantage to be tough mentally,” he said. “Before I became a Soldier, I was still weak mentally. Basic training was kind of hard. WCAP and the Army gives you all

Rotich said he doesn’t forget where he came from or his family who supports him.

“When I look back and see where I’ve come from and where I am right now, sometimes you find yourself crying but then when you think about it; it’s like you’re telling yourself wherever I am right now, as long as I’m doing the right thing, I’ll still go far as long as I’m true to myself,” he said.

“I tell myself, ’You have a family; they depend on you. You have a family; you depend on them. You have a support system,’” he said. “All my life, the reason I’m who I am today is because of the support system I’ve had along the way.”

When he’s on the line with his fellow competitors, he said his military mental training gives him the edge.

“You can be a Soldier and an athlete,” he said. “When I put on my Army singlet and stand behind the line, I feel like my team’s mental toughness is stronger than the other athletes.”

As Rotich gets ready to take on the U.S. Olympic Trials in June with his support team in tow, he said he competes to represent the U.S. and Army.

“Every time I win a race and the flag is being raised, and you salute the flag, that’s the time you feel all the work you’ve put in, all the energy, all they support I’ve gotten from WCAP and the Army, and I’ll say, ‘I did what I was supposed to do. I gave the best that I had,’” Rotich said.

USAFE hosts first-ever basic fighter maneuver exercise at Ramstein

Thirty-seven fighter jets from nine NATO countries participated in Ramstein 1v1, U.S. Air Forces in Europe’s first-ever basic fighter maneuvers exercise at Ramstein Air Base, June 6.

Participants included military aviators from the U.S., United Kingdom, Norway, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France and Germany. Aircraft included F-35A Lightning IIs, F-16 Fighting Falcons, Eurofighter Typhoons, Dassault Rafale Cs, F/A-18 Hornets and Douglas A-4 Skyhawks.

During the exercise, aviators engaged in a friendly match of basic fighter maneuvers to test their rapid decision-making and precise reactions to adversary maneuvers in a high-pressure, demanding setting — an essential skill for fighter pilots.

“Basic fighter maneuvering — sometimes called dogfighting — is a foundational skill set for fighter pilots,” said Lt. Col. Michael Loringer, U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa chief of weapons and tactics. “It tests a pilot’s reaction time, physical stamina and situational awareness. BFM is a coveted and timeless skillset, dating back to the first fighter pilots of World War I. There is no better way to build

trust in a pilot’s aircraft or a pilot’s skills than to engage in a one on one BFM fight.”

In addition to providing an opportunity to test their skills in a unique setting, the exercise bolstered relationships and esprit de corps among Allies through the sharing of tactics, techniques and experiences – ultimately strengthening NATO’s collective resolve. Additionally, it allowed the U.S. and Allies to learn from one another and foster teamwork in a safe environment, enhancing communication and interoperability.

“This event provided a prime opportunity to hone our skills, and it made a fun experience to build cooperation and camaraderie amongst all the participants,” Lorringer said. “We are not just

NATO Allies, but a community bound by genuine friendship and respect. I emphasize this point because successful military operations require exceptional teamwork, often critical to survival. And as a pilot, it boils down to trust. It’s crucial to trust your wingman.”

Further demonstrating the trust and teamwork demonstrated during Ramstein 1v1, U.S. Airmen from Lakenheath Air Base serviced Royal Norwegian Air Force F-35A Lightning II aircraft, a force multiplier for U.S. national security and NATO’s unified, collective defense, Loringer said.

At the core of the Global Gateway, 86th Airlift Wing personnel also provided installation support to ensure the exercise was a success.

“This exercise is about preparation and being ready to deploy and project our airpower throughout Europe and Africa at a moment’s notice,’ said Airman Basic Regis Dickerson II, 86th Logistic Readiness Squadron mobile distribution operator. “The stronger our trust and connections becomes, the stronger our capabilities become. When we join together as one this shows our adversaries what we are capable of.”

Members of the 86th Maintenance Group and 86th Logistics Readiness Group enabled flightline operations through various functions from marshaling aircraft to refueling aircraft and providing transportation for crews. The 86th Operations Group and German counterparts also played a critical role in coordinating airspace, take-offs and

landings during the initial arrival, exercise scenarios and final departure.

“As the Global Gateway, Ramstein is the cradle for this inaugural event and facilitates interoperability within the Alliance,” Loringer said. “From petroleum, oils and lubricants, to transient alert to the 86th Operational Support Squadron, Ramstein 1v1 was only possible with the combined efforts of the fantastic Ramstein team.”

Ramstein 1v1 is a prime example of the 86th AW mission: defend U.S. interests, project power and enable the Global Gateway.

Exercises like Ramstein 1v1 not only strengthen the Global Gateway, but also boost combat readiness among participating nations, and their ability to swiftly respond to emerging threats in the Euro-Atlantic region.

German Hunting Course in Baumholder

FRÜHLINGSFEST (SPRING FESTIVAL)

JUNE 15–17, ABBEY CHURCH SQUARE/WALDFESTPLATZ, OTTERBERG

Since the middle of the 18th century, it has been tradition to celebrate the Frühlingsfest every second year. The festival will be opened by the mayor on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. for lively music and drink. Don’t be startled if you are wakened by loud gun shots on Sunday morning at 6 a.m., this marks the start of the musicians marching through the town. The highlight will be on Sunday at 1 p.m. with a colorful parade through the historic town crowned by the Frühlingskönigin (queen) drawn in a carriage with black horses along with her court. Musicians in traditional costumes will take part with walking groups dressed as Cistercian monks, Huguenots, Walloons and a night watchman. School and kindergarten children, local clubs with floats will join the parade with over 1,000 participants expected. Afterwards anyone interested is welcome to join the procession to Waldfestplatz, with food, beverages, music and a colorful atmosphere, a shuttle bus will also be available. Don’t miss out on this exciting and historic festival! If you wish to see the parade, make sure to get there early, parking is very limited.

75TH BERLIN AIRLIFT ANNIVERSARY

JUNE 16, 9:30 A.M. – 8 P.M., CLAY KASERNE AIRFIELD, WIESBADEN

U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden and the State of Hesse will host a public commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift. U.S. Army Wiesbaden, previously an Air Force airfield, was one of the main locations that launched aircraft in support of the Berlin Airlift 1948-1949. Visitors can see historic aircraft and current equipment from U.S. and German militaries, and also enjoy food, fun and live music. Access to the premises is only on foot, by bike, by taxi or by shuttle bus and may have to queue at the entrance. The event will be signposted on autobahns and roads, Park & Ride lots and services will be available. er, and Liam Pope, a fifth-grader, were two of the three Americans who competed in this competition held at the City School of London. Several hundred students in grades three through five competed in the Geo Bee. While both students represented DODEA

very well, showcasing their extensive geography knowledge, they did not make it through all the rounds of competition to make the finals. According to James, “The questions were difficult, but I am eager to study and I will be ready for next year!”

ABC IN KMC: Berlin Airlift

Berlin in the post-war era, a city and a whole country divided into four occupation zones, each controlled by the Allied powers: the United States, the United Kingdom, France and the Soviet Union. The city located in the middle of the Soviet zone was only accessible by three transit routes. Tensions soon escalated between the Western Allies and the Soviet Union and on June 24, 1948, the Soviets blocked all three rail and road transit routes to West Berlin, leaving 2.2 million people facing the threat of starvation and isolation.

As we commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift, it is imperative to revisit the historic event that showcased humanitarianism over hostility.

Responding to this dire situation, the Western Allies launched Operation Vittles, famously known as the Berlin Airlift, on June 26, 1948. Led primarily by the United States and supported by the United Kingdom and other Western nations, this unprecedented humanitarian mission aimed to supply the people of West Berlin with essential provisions by air.

Over the course of the airlift, which lasted for 15 months until September 1949, Allied cargo planes made more than 278,000 flights, delivering approximately 2.3 million tons of food, fuel, and supplies to the beleaguered city.

Flights to Berlin were dangerous and planes could only use three air corridors. Many flights occurred at night, Tempelhof airfield was located right in the city center and pilots had to fly very low over buildings to reach their destination. Soviet pilots also buzzed the transport aircraft, used tethered balloons, radio interference and searchlights in the pilots’ eyes to deter the flights. Between Aug. 10, 1948 and Aug. 15, 1949, there were 733 incidents of harassment.

Although no plane was actually shot down, 78 pilots lost their lives when their planes crashed as they approached the airfield. In one instance, an aircraft carrying 35 people crashed because of Soviet harassment.

In total 17 U.S. and eight British aircraft crashed during the airlift, amounting to 101 people dying while supplying Berlin.

The Berlin airlift monument, established in 1951, commemorates their sacrifice. Its three pillars also symbolized the three air corridors, and Berliners colloquially refer to the monument as the “hunger claw.”

The blockade was lifted May 12, 1949, however the airlift continued until September and at its peak, an aircraft landed in West Berlin every 30 seconds, showcasing the remarkable logistical prowess and unwavering commitment of the Allied Forces.

The success of the Berlin Airlift not only prevented a humanitarian catastrophe but also symbolized the resolve of the Western Allies to defend freedom and democracy in the face of Soviet aggression. It became a powerful symbol of unity and solidarity, inspiring hope not only among the people of West Berlin but also around the world.

Uncle Wiggly Wings

In the annals of the Berlin Airlift, one name shines brightly amidst the collective heroism: Gail Halverson, affection -

ately known as the “Berlin Candy Bomber” or “Uncle Wiggly Wings.” A young pilot in the United States Air Force, Halverson’s story adds a heartwarming dimension to the already remarkable narrative of the airlift.

It was during the early days of the operation when Halverson, stationed at Tempelhof Airport in Berlin, noticed a group of children watching the planes take off and land from a nearby fence. Touched by their curiosity and longing for a taste of normalcy amidst the turmoil, Halverson decided to share his rations of candy with them.

Using handkerchiefs as makeshift parachutes, Halverson and his fellow pilots dropped chocolate bars and chewing gum from their planes as they approached the airport. The sight of these sweet treats drifting down from the sky became a source of joy and comfort for the children of Berlin, earning Halverson the enduring gratitude and admiration of countless individuals.

Halverson’s spontaneous act of kindness soon captured the imagination of people around the world, turning him into a symbol of hope and compassion amid the bleak backdrop of the Cold War. His simple gesture

transcended boundaries and ideologies, demonstrating the power of empathy and generosity to bridge divides and uplift spirits.

In addition to his candy drops, Halverson played a crucial role in boosting morale among both Berliners and fellow airmen. His unwavering optimism and spirit of camaraderie inspired those around him to persevere in the face of adversity, embodying the indomitable resolve of the Allied forces during the airlift.

Today, Gail Halverson’s legacy endures as a shining example of the impact that individual acts of kindness can have on the lives of others, even in the most challenging of circumstances.

Halverson passed away as a centenarian Feb. 16, 2022, and will

always be remembered as a hero by Berliners.

As we commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift, let us not forget the extraordinary contributions of individuals like Halverson and his comrades, whose compassion and generosity helped to alleviate the suffering of a besieged city and inspire a world in need of hope.

The U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden is hosting a commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the airlift in conjunction with the State of Hesse. Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009, the park contains more than 10,000 species of flora and fauna. But the park is more than just a natural paradise: visitors will never be short on entertaining activities. Here are four great things to do in Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park.

Take a carriage ride across the Wadden Sea mudflats

Unless you’re less than 10 years old, mudflats might not seem all that entertaining. The tide goes out, and the muddy world below reveals itself…and so? But the Wadden Sea mudflats rarely inspire a ‘meh’ response in visitors. Why? First of all, the mudflats are teeming with life. We’re talking worms, shrimp, crabs, birds, and little kids chasing birds. Next, the flats are awe-inspiring: they reveal the connection between the land, the sea, and even islands in the sea.

And, in Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park, mudflats are also transformed into roads, in the form of horse-drawn carriages (or Wattwagen, in German) that crisscross them. At low tide, the carriages take passengers from the coastal town of Cuxhaven to the island of Neuwerk. It’s one of the few places in the world where you can reach an island without a boat!

The prices are a bit steep, but worth it: for children up to 9 years of age, a round-trip ticket costs €30. For everyone else, the cost is €70. Carriage/boat options are also available,

See harbor porpoises in their natural habitat

It may seem odd to think that pods of small dolphin-like mammals live in water as cold and rugged as the North Sea. But they do, and springtime and early summer offer wonderful opportunities to see them!

Shy by nature, and with a population that is threatened in the North Sea by shipping, fishing, and other commercial activities, the porpoises aren’t always easy to see. But it’s worth your time to try and see them. They are the only ones of their kind in German waters, and they’re also valued and beloved as a “sentinel species” — i.e. one that gives scientists

Visit the Fisherman’s House Museum in Norderney

Norderney is a blast. A sandy, thriving, shopping-friendly East Frisian island (and its eponymous town) just off the coast of Lower Saxony, it makes for a great day trip. You can grab a bite to eat, wander the beach, and contemplate the sea.

You can also go to the Fisherman’s House Museum, which is really well done and surprisingly entertaining. The museum opened

in 1937, and does a great job of showing how island families lived and worked almost a century ago. While there, visitors can learn about Norderney island’s development, history, fishing industry, and culture.

Get sandy on the island of Spiekeroog

Spiekeroog is one of the best East Frisian islands, mostly because it seems so wild. Located less than 6 kilometers from the German mainland, and car-free, Spiekeroog contains thousands of acres of sand dunes, most of them untouched and unspoiled.

Low tide is a high time on the island. When mudflats appear, visitors can swoop in (along with omnipresent birds) to check out the shell life. You’ll see thousands of mussels and oysters doing their absolute best to burrow out of harm’s way.

Getting to Lower Saxony National Park By car, the park’s visitor center at Wilhelmshaven is just under 6 hours from Kaiserslautern, 5.5 hours from Wiesbaden, and 6.5 hours from Stuttgart.
