Carter’s humble legacy honored with full military splendor in Washington
by Army Maj. Wes Shinego Department of Defense News
Former President Jimmy Carter, the nation’s 39th chief executive, returned to Washington this week in a final procession that fused his unique connection to the city with the enduring pageantry of American military honors. From his early White House days — when he balked at the presidency’s ceremonial norms — to his final trip to the capital — where he received the full pageantry of a state funeral — Carter’s journey underscores how deeply he shaped, and was shaped by, the city he once sought to reform.
Carter’s final Washington homecoming began on Tuesday in Georgia, where crowds gathered to pay respects during a departure ceremony at the Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta. Pallbearers from the Joint Armed Forces Body Bearer team escorted Carter’s remains, while the 282nd Army Band — performing in support of Joint Task ForceNational Capital Region — played
MASTHEAD
“Amazing Grace” and “Blessed Assurance.”
The motorcade delivered Carter’s body to Dobbins Air Reserve Base, where four Ruffles and Flourishes, a rendition of “Hail to the Chief,” and a 21-gun salute honored the former president. Moments later, pallbearers carried Carter’s casket to the aircraft loader as the U.S. Army’s Maneuver Center of Excellence Band played “Nearer My God, to Thee.”
Commander of JTF-NCR, Maj. Gen. Trevor J. Bredenkamp — charged with escorting the former president’s family throughout the proceedings — reflected on the honor he and the nearly 4,000 service members who supported the task force share.
“State funerals demand synchronization across dozens of subordinate units and adjacent commands,” said Bredenkamp. “Each ceremonial component—from planning to completion, whether in Georgia or the capital—is meticulously planned and I couldn’t be prouder of each service member
who contributed to honoring the late commander-in-chief.”
“We’re a joint force,” said Navy Rear Adm. David J. Faehnle, whose responsibilities as JTF-NCR’s Deputy Commander include coordinating task force support during the six-day ceremony.
“At a task force, we’re used to operating together, whether it’s Navy, Army, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard or Space Force,” he said. “It really comes down to good communication, clarity on the sequence of events, and robust rehearsals.”
On arrival to Joint Base Andrews, the Joint Force Honor Cordon greeted the late President with full military honors while the U.S. Air Force Band performed “Abide with Me.”
During a special ceremony at the U.S. Navy Memorial, Carter’s casket transferred from hearse to caisson. The event featured a formation of Midshipmen, the U.S. Navy Band, Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro, and Naval Academy Superintendent Vice Adm. Yvette M. Davids, recalling
Carter’s own arrival at Annapolis in 1943 and paying homage to the former President’s Naval career.
Immediately following the casket transfer, a funeral procession unfolded along Pennsylvania and Constitution Avenues, retracing the route that Carter walked after taking his inaugural oath in 1977. Representatives from The Old Guard stood at attention while a horse-drawn caisson progressed at a measured pace.
At the Capitol Plaza, The U.S. Army Band greeted the late president with another rendition of “Hail to the Chief,” and performed “God of Our Fathers” and “O God Our Help in Ages Past.” Here, Carter’s casket was carried up the East Steps, accompanied by the Special Honor Guard, family members, and surviving cabinet officials from his administration.
In the Rotunda, members of Congress, the Vice President, Supreme Court justices and invited guests gathered for a service. The Naval Academy Glee Club sang “My Country, Tis of Thee” and “Eternal Father, Strong to Save,” before the
Senate and House chaplains delivered an invocation and benediction. House Speaker Mike Johnson, Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Vice President Kamala Harris offered eulogies and placed wreaths near the casket, acknowledging Carter’s achievements — including his focus on human rights, conservation efforts and communitydriven values.
As the ceremony concluded, the late president’s casket was set on the Lincoln Catafalque at the Rotunda’s center. There, Carter’s body laid in state through Wednesday evening, allowing mourners from the public to pay their respects.
In the wake of his presidency, he recalled the White House as simultaneously hospitable and intimidating — a place of daily routine for presidents but an almost sacred museum of the nation’s story. That sense of gravitas anchored Carter’s term. Throughout his presidency, Carter believed the White House — with all its storied artifacts — was just on loan to him for a brief chapter.
The district had rarely seen a president like Jimmy Carter when he first arrived in 1977. Unlike many of his political colleagues, Carter grew up in a modest home, faced the hardships of the Great Depression and worked alongside Black sharecroppers on his family’s peanut farm.
That upbringing led him to reject excesses. Known for his cost-saving measures, Carter
broke from the norms set by his predecessors. He sold the presidential yacht, enrolled his daughter in the district’s public school system, and chose simple southern meals over Washington’s upscale offerings.
Despite the initial culture shock of life in the capital, Carter pressed on, steadfast in his desire to lead with principle. His years in Washington produced lasting
accomplishments: he signed the Camp David Accords and reimagined the role of the presidency in forging honest relationships with both Congress and the American people.
This week, that chapter ended, and with JTF-NCR’s support, Washington poured forth every means of respect and gratitude. Elite service members assigned to the Joint Ceremonial Honor
Guard stood watch over the president through Wednesday night, while lines of citizens snaked along barricades, braving freezing temperatures to pay their respects.
Though the pageantry on display during Carter’s funeral may appear at odds with the late president’s understated approach to the office, Faehnle explained how the proceedings were tailored to meet the former commander-inchief’s intent.
“While state funerals seem to emphasize pomp and formality, President Carter viewed his ceremony as an opportunity to embrace the American people,” Faehnle said. “What you saw during the procession and motor-
cade, and at the Navy Memorial and Rotunda, was a connection between a bereaved public and a president who prioritized common citizens.”
As he monitored the funeral from the task force’s joint operations center, Faehnle offered his final thoughts on the military’s place in the ceremony.
“For JTF-NCR, this week is about precision and ceremonial excellence,” he said. “It not only represents our respect for civilian leadership but also shows that no matter the mission — be it honoring a fallen head of state or protecting our Nation around the globe — each service stands ready to execute with excellence.”
THE HOUSING HYPE TAKE NOTE
KMC Housing Community SAVES ENERGY!
Energy conservation and climate change has become a constant discussion over the past few years.
So, why should you be passionate about conserving energy in your home? Well, this boils down to two fundamental reasons: to save money and to reduce the amount of damage caused to the environment.
Whether you live on-base or in our local communities, here are some easy ways to save energy costs while living in your home…
KMC HOUSING “ENERGY CONSERVATION TIPS”
» Use sunlight whenever available, switch off lights when not required and adjust heating thermostat to lower temperature when you’re not home.
» Draw your curtains at dusk to retain heat in your home, and make sure the curtains, or any furniture, are not blocking your radiators.
» Dress for the weather. When you are at home, dress in warm clothing in the winter and cooler clothing in the summer to stay comfortable.
» Turn off the lights when they are not in use.
» Set your refrigerator temperature to the manufacturer’s recommendation to avoid excessive cooling and wasting energy.
» Turn water off when shaving, washing hands, brushing teeth.
» Unplug unused electronics
» Conserve energy by not leaving electrical items on standby…prevent further waste by not keeping laptops and mobile phones charging unnecessarily.
» Take a shower rather than a bath – showers use a lot less water.
» Defrost frozen food in the fridge overnight, as this will reduce the cooking time.
» Keep inside doors closed if they lead to an unheated room, to prevent cold air mixing with warmed air and flowing around the house.
» Dripping taps, if you live on-base, call the Housing Maintenance (Comm: 06371-4639510) for a fix! If you are off-base, talk with your Landlord.
» Winter tip for base townhouse families: When temperatures are below freezing; ensure the outside technical room is always closed. As a reminder, the maintenance responsibility for technical rooms belongs to the Housing Maintenance Contractor, Vectrus. For repairs, call Comm Phone: 06371-463-9510.
» During the winter months, cover your outside water facets to prevent bursting water pipes!

725th Air Mobility Squadron ensures global reach through strategic airlift support
by 1st Lt. Nathan Roe 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing
The 725th Air Mobility Squadron, stationed at Naval Station Rota in Spain, plays a pivotal role in the U.S. Air Force’s global operations. As part of the Global Air Mobility Support System, the squadron is responsible for ensuring the seamless movement of personnel, cargo, and equipment across the globe. Their work is critical to maintaining the Air Force’s rapid response capabilities.
“The primary mission of the 725 is supporting the GAMSS network at Naval Station Rota,” said Lt. Col. Brian Shea, commander of the 725th AMS. “The Global Air Mobility Support System is a network of strategic airlift hubs all over the globe, and Rota is a key node in that system.”
With 195 personnel, including 140 maintainers, the squadron supports the C-17 and C-5 aircraft, which are essential to the Air Force’s global airlift operations. The squadron manages a typical workflow of three aircraft per day, coordinating closely with the Navy to ensure efficient operations at the joint base. This collaboration is crucial to keeping air mobility on schedule.
“Our maintainers must be fully qualified on both C-17 and C-5 aircraft,” Shea said. “This is a skill requirement unique to Air Mobility Operations Wings, and it demonstrates the high level of expertise we maintain in our squadron.”
The squadron’s readiness was showcased
during the recent U.S. military withdrawal from Niger. Over a six-week period, the 725th AMS shouldered much of the workload, ensuring that personnel and equipment were withdrawn efficiently and safely. The operation underscored the squadron’s ability to adapt quickly and operate under pressure.
“Our team played a critical role in the Niger withdrawal,” Shea said. “Despite the challenges, we worked tirelessly to ensure that the mission was accomplished without delay.”
Being stationed at Rota presents unique challenges for the squadron. The 725th AMS operates as part of an “Air Force island,” requiring the team to work with a high degree of autonomy and independence. This situation places extra pressure on the squadron, but it also fosters a culture of self-reliance and adaptability.
“All members assigned to the 725 ensure that the mission gets done, no matter the complexities of separation,” Shea added.
The squadron has also embraced new technology to enhance its operations. By introducing the Hololens, a mixed-reality device, the 725th AMS is able to apply its expertise to more remote locations, extending its reach and support to missions far beyond Rota.
Through their dedication and specialized skills, the 725th AMS ensures that the U.S. Air Force remains agile and ready to respond to global events. Their mission is indispensable to the Air Mobility Command’s ability to project power and provide humanitarian assistance worldwide.

A healthy dose of history: 2024 at Public Health Command Europe
U.S. Army Public Health Command Europe’s Entomological Science Program invited the Polish Armed Forces for a joint mosquito surveillance training at the PHCE Headquarters in Landstuhl, Feb. 12–15, 2024. Four Polish officers from the Epidemiological Response Centre attended the training which focused on tick and mosquito identification and covered mosquito biology and military history, medically important mosquitoes of Poland, trapping types and techniques and developing a vector disease response plan.
From May 8–31, 2024, a veterinarian and an animal care specialist from U.S. Army Public Health Command Europe supported a three week-long medical readiness exercise in Accra, Ghana. MEDREX is a program designed and overseen by the U.S. Southern European Task Force, Africa that allows medical personnel from the U.S. military and partner nations to exchange medical procedures and strengthen treatment capabilities. The exercise exposes participants to unique medical delivery methods and ultimately improves their capacity to assess and deliver care. For the first time in its history, a veterinary component was added to the medical exercise to provide veterinary care and train handlers on military working dog point of care training.
At the request of U.S. European Command, U.S. Army Public Health Command Europe Environmental Engineers attended the first Combined Drinking Water Summit for the U.S. Department of Defense with the Polish Ministry of Health and Ministry of National Defense from July 9–11, 2024. PHCE engineers trained participants on technical processes concerning drinking water treatment, spotlighting a production plant and garrison at Świętoszów, Poland, which will serve as a test case and will set the example for execution of future sampling events.
More than 100 military veterinary personnel from 20 countries participated in the International Military Veterinary Symposium, hosted by U.S. Army Public Health Command Europe in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, May 6–10, 2024. The theme of the year’s symposium was “Combating Global Health Threats through Veterinary Services” and brought together military veterinarians from the U.S., NATO allies and partner nations to exchange and discuss best practices, share ideas, build interoperability and foster relationships.
Radiological Advisory Medical Team – Europe, comprising of Soldiers from Public Health Command Europe and Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, participated in the Clean Care Exercise conducted at Bakony, Hungary, May 1–8, 2024. This was a NATO interoperability exercise that allowed allied and partner nations to practice both chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear defense and medical capabilities in a chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear defense environment. During the exercise, Radiological Advisory Medical Team – Europe members provided management of acute radiation casualty training, support to Decontamination/CBRN units, conducted hazard analysis of simulated radiological events, and recommended risk mitigation measures.
In 2024, Public Health Command Europe, Department of Laboratory Sciences, was the only laboratory in the DOD conducting EPA-approved testing in-house for PFAS in drinking water. PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a group of man-made chemicals used in products like non-stick cookware, waterproof clothing, firefighting foam, and food packaging. They are often called “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down easily in the environment or the human body. Testing for PFAS is mandated in all DOD-owned drinking water systems. Since they are so persistent, early detection and regulation are key to protecting public health.

PAOs assemble! USAG Rheinland-Pfalz team makes iron-clad connections at theater-wide communication symposium
by Linda Lambiotte U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz
The public affairs team from U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz attended the 2024 U.S. Army Europe and Africa public affairs symposium and the Installation Management Command-Europe public affairs workshop in Wiesbaden, Dec. 3-6.
The events provided a unique opportunity for public affairs professionals to come together, share best practices, and enhance their skills in media relations, crisis communications, and digital engagement. Attendees also got to hear from top public affairs leaders, including Brig. Gen. Amanda Azubuike, U.S. Army chief of public affairs.
“We had two primary goals, and I think we achieved them both,” said Mark Heeter, public affairs officer, IMCOM-E. “We wanted to make personal connections that a workshop like this enables, and we wanted to share important information and best practices.”
Through a combination of presentations, workshops, and networking sessions, attendees gained valuable insights and expertise,
ultimately strengthening their ability to effectively tell the Army’s story and support its mission.
Tammy Muckenfuss, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s director of public affairs, said that the events pre sented unique opportunities for participants to learn about the power of connections, a message that was emphasized by senior leaders in attendance.
“As Army commu nicators, it’s essential that we stay connected with each other and recognize how our individual missions contribute to our nation’s, our allies’, and our partners’ collective defense,” she said. “Our role is to understand the
significance of our daily support activities and effectively convey that message to our audiences.”
Muckenfuss said that showcasing the garrison’s mission — which encompasses essential services like childcare, postal services, base security, and infrastructure maintenance - is instrumental in supporting the Army’s overall readiness.
“By setting the garrison, we set the theater,” she said. “Ultimately, effective communication helps stakeholders see the direct impact of our garrison’s efforts on the Army’s success."
Heeter expressed gratitude for the unique opportunity to collaborate with public affairs
teams from all around Europe at the U.S. Army Europe and Africa symposium, allowing for a day of shared insights and collaboration.
“Connecting with public affairs staff from other garrisons and units was a major highlight this year, especially for our newer team members,” said Heeter. “Building these relationships will be invaluable in the year ahead, as they’ll enable us to easily reach out to one another when we have questions or need support, making it simpler to pick up the phone and reconnect with colleagues who understand our challenges and can offer guidance.”
According to Heeter, the symposium was a success. One key factor contributing to this was the feedback received from last year’s attendees, including a suggestion to have each garrison share a best practice, which laid the foundation for the IMCOM-E workshop.
Going forward, Heeter plans to build on the success of this year’s workshop by implementing recommendations and lessons learned. He said next year’s event will include small group break-outs to allow attendees to go more in-depth into public affairs issues and best practices.
CASES ARE ON THE RISE
Story and photo by Michelle Thum Public Health Command Europe
Cases of norovirus, a wretched and highly contagious stomach bug, are surging in parts of the United States and Europe this winter, according to Public Health Command Europe data.
“Norovirus cases typically increase during winter due to increased gatherings and travel. This highly contagious group of viruses, officially known as norovirus, causes stomach flu and spreads easily in healthcare and childcare facilities” according to Lt. Col. Simeon Smith, Public Health Command Europe Regional Public Health Nurse Consultant.
Norovirus is the official name for a group of viruses that cause the stomach flu. Healthcare and childcare facilities are particularly susceptible to these viruses due to the ease of transmission, the
small amount of infective material needed to spread the disease, the short incubation period and the fact that the virus can live in the environment for a long time unless adequately cleaned.
“Symptoms of norovirus include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach cramping. Those symptoms typically come on very quickly but usually only last for one or two days.” said Smith.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control the greatest health risk from norovirus is severe dehydration, especially in young children, the elderly, and people with other illnesses. Symptoms of severe dehydration include decreased urination or very dark urine, rapid breathing, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, lack of energy and fainting. Parents of children in diapers may notice a decrease in the number of wet diapers, although this may be hard to notice with frequent diarrhea.
Because norovirus is more
persistent than other viral causes of gastrointestinal infections, Smith recommends staying home from work or school for at least 48 hours following any episode of vomiting or diarrhea to prevent the spread of the infection.
“If you or a family member are experiencing norovirus symptoms, drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration,” Smith said. “If dehydration occurs, seek care from your primary care provider or local Emergency Room immediately.”
People can become infected after consuming foods or liquids contaminated with norovirus, having direct contact with an infected individual or touching surfaces containing the virus. Symptoms can appear as early as twelve hours after exposure to norovirus, according to the CDC.
There is no vaccine to prevent norovirus and because antibiotics fight bacterial infections, not viruses, they are ineffective in treating the illness, according to the CDC.
5 tips to prevent norovirus from spreading:
; Practice proper hand hygiene — use soap and water as alcoholbased hand sanitizers alone do not kill norovirus
; Wash fruits and vegetables and cook seafood thoroughly
; When you are sick, do not prepare food or care for others
; Clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces
; Wash laundry thoroughly

UNTERWEGS
JAZZ STAGE MEETS SYRIA
JAN. 17, 7:30 P.M., FRUCHTHALLE, KAISERSLAUTERN
Syrian Ahmad Wahhoud has been playing his way into the hearts of listeners for seven years. Having been persecuted and fled, the trained musician from Damascus was stranded in the Palatinate after harrowing experiences and joined the intercultural band Shaian in 2016. Formerly an accordion and guitar student, he has since devoted himself solely to his beloved strings — especially the Turkish lute (oud) — and sings Syrian songs in such a captivating way that you immediately feel transported to the Arab halls of Syria. He enchants with his warm smile and his powerful voice. But he doesn’t shy away from modernity either, interpreting everything from blues to pop songs as if you were meeting an Arab Eric Clapton. There will definitely be more than a hint of the Orient in the Fruchthalle. Tickets: www.kultopolis.com
KAISERSLAUTERN ON ICE
JAN. 24 – MARCH 9, MESSEPLATZ, KAISERSLAUTERN
Ice skating fans can look forward to the ice rink on Messeplatz opening its doors again. There are now 600 sqm of ice available, special events for kids, and food and drink for onlookers. The ice rink will also be built on the grass area, which will minimize noise pollution. Time to don your skates and turn pirouettes!

JAN. 26, 11 A.M., THEODOR-ZINK-MUSEUM, KAISERSLAUTERN
The concert by the fireplace offers chamber music and vocals. The Culture Department of the City of Kaiserslautern invites musical guests at the beginning of the year. As part of the independent classic music scene in and around Kaiserslautern, Sabine Heinlein, Esther Mertel and Rebecca Gerstel are organizing this year’s fireside concert. The audience can look forward to an entertaining and varied program. In a cozy atmosphere with excellent wine and a culinary surprise, there will be opportunity to exchange ideas with the musicians and their guests. What a special way to make a cold winter day into a special happening. Tickets at www.sommernachtsoper.de or Tel. 0151-5255 6383.

DYNAMIKUM SCIENCE CENTER PIRMASENS — IMMER IN BEWEGUNG, PIRMASENS
Even a good ten years after its opening, the Dynamicum, as the largest science center in the southwest, still has a special appeal, inspires its visitors and infects them with the “natural science virus”. On 4,000 sqm of exhibition space, playful research and experimentation on one’s own initiative remains the top principle in the dynamicum’s orientation as a “handson” museum. With around 160 exhibits on two levels, there are plenty of aha experiences for young and old, such as how you can move or something else or how you can supposedly outwit the laws of nature when a ball rolls up the mountain. There are several new and refined exhibits from the fascinating field of sports and biomechanics waiting to be explored. Another highlight is the dynamicum app with around 30 exciting knowledge clips. The dynamicum in the directly adjacent Strecktalpark also has a lot to offer in the open air. For details see: www.dynamikum.de

ABC IN KMC: Kaiserslautern County
by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
Many members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community have found temporary or even permanent homes in one of the many villages and towns surrounding Kaiserslautern in the heart of the Palatinate Forest.
Some members may be brand new and are just getting settled in, while others have already had the opportunity to get to know their home away from home. Let’s take a closer look and see what we can discover.
The County of Kaiserslautern stretches over an area of 639,980 square kilometers and has 108,540 inhabitants. The City of Kaiserslautern with a population of 101,480 is completely surrounded by the county. With roughly 50,000 Americans and NATO allies adding to the populace, commonly referred to as the Kaiserslautern Military Community, this amounts to 260,000 inhabitants in total.
U.S. military presence in the area amounts to a total economic impact of almost two billion U.S. dollars a year. This includes, but is not limited to, rents, utilities, construction, retail and services.
The County of Kaiserslautern is the most populous district in the Western Palatinate (Westpfalz). In its southern portion the Palatinate Forest determines the picture with Kaiserslautern being right in the center of the scene. The northern terrain is marked by hilly landscapes and the western area is known for its wet moorlands and soft rolling hills.
The City of Kaiserslautern is a municipality of its own and has a separate administration, but the county is divided into six individual union communities. These are administrative territorial communities, each composed of a group of individual towns or villages.
The largest union community, and with the highest American and NATO population, is Ramstein-Miesenbach. It has been home to Ramstein Air Base since 1952, which completely lies within its community boundaries.
Landstuhl is somewhat further south and not only provides space for Europe’s largest military hospital complex Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. It also has an astonishing Medieval history with its Nanstein Castle and has seen a famous emperor riding through its town center.
Enkenbach-Alsenborn and Hochspeyer, further to the north-
east, has become home to many a service member throughout the last seven decades. It can look upon a diversified history of early settlers, a former U.S. air base, a maneuver site overgrown with heather, and even astonishing circus acts.
Otterbach-Otterberg to the west, is best known for its impressive Abteikirche (abbey church) and a delightful city center characterized by semi-timbered edifices built by the Walloons in the 17th century. It is also famous for its annual farmers’ market, culinary hikes in the summer and a sun dial.
Swinging back even further to the west, Weilerbach has a high American population, hosts an annual wine village in the summer and a Christmas village during the holiday season. It also has a rich history of Celtic life, waiting to be discovered.
Bruchmühlbach-Miesau is the union community furthest west and is characterized by great hiking trails, wetlands and an Army depot. It is also a renowned location for equestrian fans.
Two other counties that border Kaiserslautern County are officially part of the Kaiserslautern Military Community. Personnel stationed at Sembach may be sur-
prised to learn that while they work at Sembach-Heuberg they are physically already in the neighboring county. The borderline of Donnersberg County runs almost straight through the guard shack, while Sembach village is still part of Kaiserslautern County. The most prominent landmark is Donnersberg as the highest peak in the region.
The County of Kusel, northwest of Ramstein Air Base, is a further neighbor and has become home to over 4,000 U.S. service members. The quaint town of Kusel offers leisurely strolls through town, a concert hall with excellent acoustics and neighboring castle Lichtenberg is well worth a visit, offering various Middle Age events throughout the year.
Kaiserslautern County offers a wide range of things to do and see, such as great hiking and biking trails and historic landmarks to explore from Celtic to Medieval sites. There is plenty of summer and winter fun, it offers shopping and leisure opportunities, and a chance to experience local culture, festivals and regional specialties.
The military in the region has enjoyed close ties to local civic leaders and the general populace for over seven decades. Three significant agencies have and
will continue to promote mutual understanding and respectful neighborhood relationships.
The 86th Airlift Wing Host Nation Office is the main gateway to nearly all relations with the host nation and one of the two pillars of the relations with German leaders. It is the primary point of contact between host nation officials at local and state level and Air Force leadership. It also interacts directly with the local population and acts as an access point for inquiries and concerns by the German community.
Host Nation Advisors at the Public Affairs Offices both at the U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz and the 21st Theater Sustainment Command engage in promoting strong community and Germany-wide relations as well and have built bridges between changing military leadership and local representatives for over 70 years. Each individual union community has a story of its own to tell. In the upcoming weeks, we will highlight one community at a time. Be open for discoveries in your village or town of residence, while we take you on an exciting journey through the County (and City) of Kaiserslautern. Stay tuned for a few surprises!
USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s Youth Program launches Money Matters initiative
by Linda Lambiotte
U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz
The Boys & Girls Clubs of America recently awarded $5000 to U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz’s Baumholder Youth Program to pilot a new Money Matters program.
The initiative is designed to empower kids with the skills and knowledge they need to make informed financial decisions, providing them with hands-on experience and expertise in investing strategies and the stock market, setting them up for a strong financial future, said Ryan Flynn, Baumholder Youth Programs director.
During the Money Matters program, participants will track the stock market for four-weeks, looking for and analyzing trends. They’ll also participate in an investing course geared for tweens that will teach them about investing in stocks and the importance of having a diverse portfolio.
Funding for the Money Matters grant came from the Charles Schwab Foundation through BGCA. According to Flynn, BGCA has a strong network of partners, including UPS and Major League Baseball, who share a commitment to positive youth development.
“These organizations invest in the BGCA because they trust its reputation as a first-class youth development organization, knowing that their investment will yield better outcomes for the youth they serve,” Flynn said.
Throughout the Money Matters program, the Baumholder Youth Program will provide real-time feedback from the students participating, which will be reported back to the BGCA and Charles Schwab, enabling them to make data-driven decisions and adjust support as needed, Flynn said.
“The success of our programs and facilities relies on the ability to secure funding that supports our mission,” Flynn said. “We use grant funds to enhance our programs and facilities with things like travel opportunities, new equipment, and amenities, all while keeping prices low to make our center a welcoming and affordable place for youth.”

Garmisch-Partenkirchen: An interesting history
For hundreds of years, the town of Garmisch was fundamentally separate from Partenkirchen. Partenkirchen evolved from Partanum, a Roman town lying on the Venice-Augsburg trade route, with its first mention in history around 15 A.D. In fact, the Ludwigstrasse, Partenkirchen’s main street, follows the original Roman road. About 800 years later, Garmisch came into the picture as the German District, indicating that the Teutonic tribe might have settled towards the valley’s west. However, it was not until the 20th Century that the two separate towns would be connected as one.
With the discovery of the Americas just before the 16th century, ocean shipping became lucrative and overland trade suffered a sharp decline. For Garmisch and neighbouring Partenkirchen, the region was plunged into hundreds of years of economic depression; the swampy valley was hard to farm due to being swampy. Lynxes, wolves and bears constantly threatened livestock, and the region was plagued with epidemics such as bubonic plague.
As the fortunes of the area were affected by crop failure and disease, witch hunting grew out of the engulfing misery; notable witch hunts, trials and barbaric executions followed between 1589 and 1596. In fact, 10 percent of the Garmisch-Partenkirchen population at the time – or 63 people to be precise – were either garroted or burned alive. A gruesome history indeed!
The Winter Olympics of 1936
Garmisch-Partenkirchen is famously remembered for hosting the Winter Olympic Games of 1936 where for the first time in history, alpine skiing was featured. Both towns remained separate until 1935, when Hitler forced the mayors of the regions to combine in anticipation of the 1936 Winter Olympic games.
Today, many alpine and Nordic world cup ski tournaments are held in the region, mostly on the Kandahar Olympic run situated on the Alpspitze mountain. Every New Year’s Day in GarmischPartenkirchen, there is a ski jump
competition within the Four Hills Tournament.
It goes without saying that over the years GarmischPartenkirchen has always been favored as a top holiday spot in Germany when it comes to hiking, snowboarding and skiing, especially the Zugspitze and the Classic Area (Hausberg and Alpspitze Mountains).
Zugspitze
At 2,962 meters (or 9,717 feet), the Zugspitze is Germany’s highest mountain. Reaching the top requires the use of a number of lifts or the funicular railway. The border with Austria runs right across the peak and it is possible to go up from Germany, and descend using another cable car to end up in a nearby town across the border in Austria. To enjoy the visit to the top, plan to do it on a clear day: otherwise you could end up with zero visibility.
The skiing on Zugpsitze is fantastic on a good day and there are very few queues for the lifts. There are two blue learning slopes but no nursery slopes so it’s best to be able to do (at a minimum) some basic snow plowing before
heading up. Zugspitze is a glacier which means you can ski on it quite early until fairly late in the season, but it is equally beautiful to visit during the summer too. There are a number of summer hiking trails that lead to the top (the last part is actually a more like a technical climb so many people take a short cable car for this bit). To enjoy the thrill of going up the tallest peak in Germany, prepare for a two day hike to reach the summit. There are basic lodgings and food on a number of trails but it is important to book in advance and bring the gear you need. Climbing and hiking this summit is an attraction that draws tourists from around the world.
Classic Area
For those who intend to visit Garmisch-Partenkirchen to learn to ski, head to Hausberg and Alpspitze, which combined make up the Classic Area ski-pass. Hausberg is the lowest point in the area and a superb destination for beginners, but it does get quite busy, especially on weekends. More advanced skiers you can start at the Alpspitze mountain
and discover all the runs there before skiing across to Hausberg to join friends in the afternoon for a rewarding mug of steaming hot glühwein (but be aware that you can’t ski back).
In summer, there are some fantastic walking trails over this area (and beyond) as well as some awesome mountain-bike trails for adrenaline junkies!
Garmisch-Partenkirchen accommodations
Garmisch-Partenkirchen has no shortage of high quality hotels and self-catering apartments to suit every budget. The entire town is very used to English-speaking American guests. Of course you reserve a room (paying dollars!) at the Edelweiß Lodge, where you will be able to book ski lessons, hire ski clothes and use all the facilities. But to get the best out of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, live like a local.
Our favorite family-run guest house and spa is the Forsthaus Graseck, situated just above the ski jump and ice stadium, nestled in a mountaintop destination and accessed only by its very own ancient cable car (unless you
have have a 4×4 vehicle). Aside from a warm welcome, wonderful local cuisine, open fires and very comfortable accommodation, they also offer torchlit tours of the Partnenachklamm (gorge) which is situated at the foot of the hotel and is a magical way to spend the evening.
Restaurants
For an easy budget food tasting rollercoaster start at the Cafe Konditorei Thron, which is always opened for breakfast, or fill up on roast beef with potato dumplings in the best sauerbraten source.
The Eibsee Pavilion at the foot of Zugstpize (out of town in Grainau) is a spectacular way to catch some lunch in a lovely place with a Biergarten and restaurant section outdoors.
For a really traditional Bavarian night out in Partenkirchen town center, book a table at Gasthof-Fraundorfer. There you will discover delicious Bavarian cuisine, traditional singing, yodelling and alpine dancing in a bustling family-run restaurant that has been hosting guests from far and wide since 1857. It’s very busy and service can be a little brusk, but it’s well worth it for the experience and the food, but you must book in advance. For a really magical entrance you could book a pony and cart to take your group on a little tour of the town before dropping you off at the restaurant.
Night life
There are many places to be in Garmisch-Partenkirchen at night, and you’ll find a great party atmosphere during the winter. The Underground bar stays open til late or pop into the Irish Pub where there is live music on most nights.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen has something for everyone. It’s a traditional old Bavarian town that offers modern winter sports facilities and lots of outdoor activities in the Summer. It’s very close to Munich, Neuschwanstein and Schwanau Castles as well as Dachau Concentration Camp, so you can tick a lot of must-sees off your list on your way there and back too!
Getting to GarmischPartenkirchen
By car, GarmischPartenkirchen is approximately 5 hours from Kaiserslautern or Wiesbaden, and 3 hours from Stuttgart. Check Deutsche Bahn for train options.
