The Third Air Force Commander, Maj. Gen. Paul Moga, and command chief, Chief Master Sgt. Stephanie Cates, recently visited multiple U.S. military installations across East Africa to gain insights on Air Force infrastructure, operational readiness, and international partnerships.
During the visit, the command team assessed the condition of the camps’ airfield and facilities and met with base leaders to discuss ongoing construction plans to sustain long-term readiness.
The trip began at Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti, a strategic
hub for U.S. operations under the Combined Joint Task Force HOA in Africa, where the leaders received a detailed briefing on the 75th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron’s mission, intelligence collection, and tactics that provided insight on their contributions to regional security and counterterrorism efforts. These Airmen support and sustain units across Africa.
Following Djibouti, Moga and Cates traveled to Magagoni Airfield, Kenya, to lay a wreath at the Operation Linda Nchi Memorial commemorating the Kenyan Defense Force fight against Al-Shabaab.
While in Manda Bay, Kenya, Moga and Cates also visited the Airmen of the 475th Expeditionary
Air Base Squadron at Camp Simba. The 475th EABS provides base operations and communications support for 13 mission partners, enabling Special Operations Command Africa missions in Kenya and Somalia. The command team received an overview of how the U.S. Air Force element and their host nation partners respond to regional threats, allowing them to see firsthand how the squadron ensures a more secure, stable and prosperous Africa by working alongside their African and international partners.
Throughout their visit, Moga and Cates had the opportunity to engage directly with service members, thank them for their efforts, and assess their needs.

From concept to command: Celebrating 5 years of US Space Force
Space Base Delta 1 headquarters building at Peterson Space Force Base, CO, Nov. 20. SBD 1 enables U.S. Space Force operations for 10 of the USSF Space Deltas and more than 111 other mission partners across 23 world-wide operating locations by providing integrated base operating support, combat service support and delta staff agency services.
Col. Kenneth Klock, incoming Space Base Delta 1 commander, speaks with SBD 1 Guardians and Airmen after accepting command at Peterson Space Force Base, CO, July 11. When changing command, the guidon is always in someone’s hands which signifies the unit and its members are never without official leadership.
by Keefer Patterson Space Base Delta 1 Public Affairs
The U.S. Space Force officially turns five years old Dec. 20.
The sixth branch of the U.S armed forces was established on Dec. 20, 2019, when President Donald J. Trump signed the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020. Under this act, Air Force Space Command, headquartered at then-Peterson Air Force Base, ceased space operations, was inactivated and the USSF assumed operational control of the space units previously commanded by AFSPC. From there, the Space Force moved forward with building and defining the new service while simultaneously maintaining legacy missions and infrastructure.
In the intervening years since its creation, the USSF has built a space-focused cadre, pulling together ideas and expertise from sister services and promoting the transfer of enlisted and officers experienced in space operations, cyber, intelligence, acquisition and engineering.
But what have these years looked like from an installation perspective?
Looking back through space and time
On July 24, 2020, the USSF inactivated the 21st Space Wing at Peterson AFB and the 50th Space Wing at Schriever AFB. On that same day, consolidating the installations under one command, Peterson-Schriever Garrison was activated with former 50th Space Wing commander, then-Col. James E. Smith, taking charge of the garrison.
first field command for the service and the higher headquarters for space operations units at to P-S GAR. On July 14, 2021, Air Force Material Command and Air Force Research Laboratory transferred control and support of the Maui Space Surveillance Complex, Hawaii, from Kirtland AFB, New Mexico, to Peterson AFB — making P-S GAR responsible for a total of seven installations.
In recognition of the critical role Peterson AFB and Schriever AFB play in supporting various space-focused missions, the Department of the Air Force redesignated both bases as Space Force Bases on July 28, 2021.
However, a new change to the command name was on the horizon.
Space Base Delta 1
On May 23, 2022, Space Operations Command redesignated P-S GAR as Space Base Delta 1.
“The new name brings our Colorado Front Range installations into greater alignment with the U.S. Space Force’s operational Space Deltas and Space Launch Deltas,” according to a quote by then-Col. Shay Warakomski in an article published on May 24, 2022.
However, the newly established SBD 1 was not just a name change but a further fine-tuning of the command’s structure.
operating locations), Combat Service Support (e.g., the essential capabilities, functions, activities and tasks necessary to sustain all elements of all operating forces at the operating locations) and Delta Staff Agency services (e.g., providing legal, financial and other administrative services to Guardians and Airmen).
Looking ahead
Taking command of SBD 1 on July 11, Col. Kenneth Klock, Space Base Delta 1 commander, now oversees the delta and its day-today operations.
“To describe Space Base Delta 1 in the simplest terms, think of us as a platform from which the space mission deltas project power,” Klock said. “Water, power, facilities, HVAC, communications, security, etc., all the critical infrastructure and resources necessary to sustain the basic functions our warfighters need to carry out the mission are provided by us.
“But it’s not just about the infrastructure, it’s also about the people. Many of our Guardians, Airmen and civilians are parents. Think of all the effort required to ensure that installation Child Development Centers are adequately equipped to take care of the children. Think of other mission support functions such as issuing ID cards and getting paid on time. SBD 1 delivers resilient and readily available support for space superiority.”
In plotting a course for the command, Klock is looking into the years ahead and seeing how the command needs to adapt to meet future needs and challenges head on.
U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Sevin Balkuvvar, Space Base Detla 1 command chief presents the Space Base Delta 1 guidon during the Peterson-Schriever Garrison resignation ceremony at Peterson Space Force Base, CO, May 23, 2022. The ceremony is one of many ways to maintain customs and courtesies, military traditions, and honoring history and decorum.

P-S GAR expanded its command responsibilities of real property at six installations to include Peterson AFB; Schriever AFB; Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station; Thule Air Base, Greenland; New Boston AFS, New Hampshire; and Ka’ena Point AFS, Hawaii.
“Many command staff functions transferred to the PetersonSchriever Garrison staff at Peterson AFB,” said Brad Helton, Space Base Delta 1 historian. “However, the support functions such as contracting, security forces, civil engineering, logistics and force support remained under the 21st and 50th Mission Support Groups, which remained active.”
To provide better mission oversight, the USSF activated Space Operations Command at Peterson AFB, Oct. 21, 2020, becoming the
“On that day, the 21st and 50th Mission Support Groups inactivated at Peterson and Schriever SFBs and all squadrons transferred under SBD 1,” Helton said. “Looking at geographically separated units such as the 821st Air Base Group at Thule Air Base, Greenland, they were redesignated as the 821st Space Base Group. Eventually, that installation would be renamed on April 6, 2023, from Thule AB to Pituffik Space Base — the traditional Greenlandic name of the region where the base is located.
“Change is the only constant … SBD 1 has constantly been making adjustments ever since to optimize its performance under the new organizational concept within the newly established service.”
Today, SBD 1 enables U.S. Space Force operations for 10 of the service’s Space Deltas that are headquartered in Colorado Springs and more than 111 other mission partners across 23 worldwide operating locations by providing integrated Base Operating Support (e.g., directly assisting, maintaining, supplying and distributing support of forces at the
“The space domain is everchanging, and, by extension, so is the Space Force,” Klock said. “Turning five years old this year, we still have a lot to figure out and define, but we are moving forward in a way that ensures we can fight today, if called upon. We are also still innovating and growing to be even more ready for the fight tomorrow. It’s a challenging and exciting time, but we are making all the critical moves that matter.”
“Supporting our missions, growing our people, engaging with our civic community leaders and modernizing our systems and infrastructures — all of that will need to continue. We always have to be prepared for the worst and ensure our capabilities are survivable, flexible and responsive to meet tomorrow’s demands. We are doing that now and we will continue to do that into the future.”
2024 Europe Best Medic Competition winners announced
Story and photos by Kirk Frady Medical Readiness Command, Europe
More than forty Soldiers representing twenty-three U.S. Army teams from various commands across the European theater, and a team from the Czech Republic Army, participated in the grueling four-day 2024 Europe Best Medic Competition Dec.10-13, near Landstuhl.
The Europe Best Medic Competition is specifically designed to test the stamina, medical skills, fitness, and readiness levels of soldier medics so they can be highly effective on the battlefield.
The overall winning team for the 2024 Europe Best Medic Competition was U.S. Army Sgt. Brayden Chapman and Sgt. Heith Walston from the 173rd Airborne Brigade, Southern European Task Force in Vicenza, Italy.
The winning team for Medical Readiness Command, Europe was U.S. Army Cpt. Taylor Hughes and 2nd Lt. Nathan Istre from Public Health Command Europe.
These top teams will go on to represent their respective com -
mands at the Army CSM Jack Clark Jr. Best Medic Competition to be held at Camp Bullis, Texas in February 2025.
According to event organizers, the Europe Best Medic Competition is more than just a test of technical skills. It is a comprehensive evaluation consisting of multiple events to include tactical combat casualty care, a physical fitness assessment, day and night land navigation, a long-distance foot march, a combat stress shoot, and a written test. The events were conducted in a simulated combat environment to test the competitor’s ability to react and perform under stressful situations.
“This competition really tested our limits and assessed how we are being trained in our units,” said U.S. Army Sgt. James Doromal, assigned to the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team. “The best medic competition challenges soldiers mentally and physically and pushes them to their limits, seeing who is mentally in the game and is not going to quit. The role of the combat medic on the battlefield gives our fellow soldiers a sense of
security knowing that they have an expert in this field, someone who is going to take care of them If they are injured or wounded.”
Competitors worked both individually and collectively as teams to successfully complete each event. The competition allowed the competitors the opportunity to demonstrate their various skill sets, thereby, significantly improving their ability to function in tactical situations.
“This competition is important because the joint warfighter deserves the best medics on the battlefield,” said U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. Jesus Gonzalez with Medical Readiness Command, Europe. “It is important that we prepare them for the rigors of combat and ensure they are mentally agile as they encounter casualties
on the battlefield. This competition challenges our soldiers mentally and physically and the lessons learned here will better prepare them to support joint and largescale combat operations. This competition also benefits the Army by strengthening soldier professions — it empowers soldiers and gives them confidence in their abilities.”
According to individuals involved in planning and executing the 2024 Europe Best Medic Competition, the competition better prepares U.S. Army medics and serves as a platform for promoting collaboration, interoperability, and continuous improvement within the military medical community.
The competition also highlights the importance of readiness and the need to have trained and capable
medical personnel to support the world’s most powerful Army.
During his opening remarks at the ceremony, U.S. Army Brig. Roger Giraud, commanding general of Medical Readiness Command, Europe congratulated each of the Soldiers who took part in the competition and thanked them for their dedication, sacrifice, and professionalism.
“You are the most powerful medics in the world, you are the best and don’t forget it,” said Giraud. “You are masters of your craft. Combat medics are the symbol of strength. Soldiers know you have their backs when they call for a medic. You give the wounded, ill and injured hope. I commend you all for being ready and wanting to be the best. You exist so that others may live and continue to fight.”

The Third Air Force command team, U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Paul Moga and U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Stephanie Cates, visited multiple units within the 86th Airlift Wing Dec. 11-12. The visit provided the opportunity for the leadership team to connect with Airmen, observe day-to-day operations, and gain insight on the Wings priorities and mission execution.
During the visit, Moga and Cates received briefs from each group under the wing, highlighting challenges they face and how they have overcome the challenges with available resources. Moga recognized the work the Airmen at Ramstein do as the Global Gateway and the role it plays in projecting power across the U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa area of responsibility.
“The 86 AW’s Airmen are the driving force behind missions that support nearly every Combatant Command,” said Moga. “As the Air Force’s premier logistical and operational hub, they are the 24/7/365 executors, enablers, and force multipliers to a staggering set of missions. We’re grateful to have had the opportunity to connect with Airmen from across the wing. Every single individual in the Global Gateway contributes to both European and international peace and security."
Following the briefs from leadership, the command team visited each group within the wing, talking
directly with Airmen to learn more about their day-to-day roles and responsibilities. During the visits, they recognized standout performers and highlighted the critical contributions of each group to the wing’s overall mission.
In addition to receiving mission briefs, the command team hosted lunch with Airmen from around the base. The lunch provided an open forum for Airmen to voice challenges they face as young Airmen at an overseas location and ask about broader issues such as how the Air Force as a whole is adapting to future conflict and problems.
“Visits like these are about more than just seeing the mission in action. They’re about hearing directly from the Airmen who make it happen every single day," said Cates. "As leaders, it’s our responsibility to listen, learn and amplify their voices. Our Wings’ inputs are what shape the direction and future of our Air Force, and it’s our duty to turn those insights into actions that drive positive change.”
Airmen were given the chance to show the command team how they impact the mission, how they train Airmen, solve complex issues and show passion for their
missions
job. Moga and Cates were given direct demonstration on operations which gave a better understanding on how Ramstein stay’s fit to fight and enhance air power.
At the end of the immersion, the command team was virtually briefed by the 65th Air Base Group, a geographically separated unit from Lajes Field, Portugal. Lajes plays a critical role in power projection and rapid mobility because they serve as a strategic waypoint for transatlantic air operations, refueling missions and contingency support, which are essential to maintaining readiness across both Europe and Africa.
The command team was grateful for the opportunity to connect with and thank Airmen from across Ramstein and its GSUs for all the Global Gateway does on both the European and African continents in support of international peace and security.
NORAD’s famous Santa Tracker started as a fluke
by Katie Lange Department of Defense News
Tracking Santa on his trek across the world has been a holiday tradition for many American families for decades, but did you know that it all started because of a mistake?
Kids across the U.S. have grown accustomed to keeping track of the big guy’s journey through the North American Aerospace Defense Command Santa Tracker. They can track his flight path online, watch video of his progress through apps or just make a good old-fashioned phone call to find out where he is.
But the whole thing wasn’t cooked up by some NORAD supergenius. It turns out it only got started because of a misprint in a newspaper advertisement.
How the tradition began
On Dec. 24, 1955, the folks at what was then the Continental Air Defense Command Operations Center in Colorado were working a typical night shift when Air Force Col. Harry Shoup got an unusual phone call.
“This call wasn’t from the president or a general. It was from a young child in Colorado Springs who was following the directions from a local department store advertisement printed in the local newspaper,” said NORAD spokesman Preston Schlachter. “The youngster wanted to know the whereabouts of Santa Claus.”
Apparently the newspaper ad was from Santa telling children to call him directly at the number on the page — except the number was wrong. It rang into the CADCOC instead.
Shoup answered the first call that came in. He could have been a scrooge about it, but he wasn’t.
“He talked to the parents and assured the child that Continental Air Defense Command would keep Santa safe during his Yuletide journey,” Schlachter said.
Throughout the night, Shoup had his operator report Santa’s location to every child that called in. Thus began the tradition, which rolled over to NORAD when it was formed in 1958, and it’s been getting more popular and more technologically savvy ever since. Aside from calling in to talk, kids can email and use various social media platforms and apps to follow Santa.
A team effort
Tracking Santa is a big task that begins in November, when NORADSanta.org starts getting inquiries from families. Usually about 70 government and nongovernment contributors help set up the site, apps and phone lines, while more than 1,500 uniformed personnel, Department of Defense civilians and their families volunteer time on Christmas Eve to answer the children’s questions on Santa’s whereabouts.
Schlachter said more than 200 countries and territories visit the website. In 2017, it got 18 million pageviews, and the Facebook page had 1.75 million followers.
The NORAD Tracks Santa program also
received 126,103 calls and answered 2,030 emails, and OnStar received 7,477 requests to locate Santa.
“I think it’s an important tradition. We’re happy to be part of that family experience,” Schlachter said.
Kids can call 1-877-Hi-NORAD (4466723) beginning on Christmas Eve to find out where Santa is. Or check the links on the NORAD Tracks Santa page for more information about how to follow him. But NTS officials warned that Santa only comes if children are asleep, so make sure they get into bed early so he doesn’t miss your house.
Have fun tracking him, and be sure to leave some carrots for the reindeer with Santa’s milk and cookies!
86th Medical Group’s Wellness Wire Ramstein Health Promotion: Staying healthy through the Holidays!
by 86th Medical Group
With the holiday season upon us, it is a great time to enjoy moments with family and friends while taking a break to reset for the new year.
Unfortunately, this time of year often leads to indulgences, which can work against your wellness goals. Studies show that adults gain an average of 1-2 pounds during the holiday season.1 If you’ve recently made positive changes to your health behaviors, the holidays don’t have to derail your progress. Here are some wellness tips to help you navigate the season healthily!
Start by focusing on nutrition and eating mindfully. This means taking your time during meals. Slow down, chew your food thoroughly, put your utensils down between bites, and savor every mouthful. This practice can help you eat less overall, by making you more aware of when you are full. At potlucks, bring a healthy dish — think salad, water, or a fruitbased dessert. When navigating buffetstyle meals, start with a small plate. Fill
it with nutrient-dense vegetables and lean meats before adding smaller portions of higher-calorie foods. Check your hunger and fullness cues before returning for seconds. Drink at least 2-3 liters of water each day. Avoid or limit sugary beverages that are high in calories, such as soda, punch, eggnog, and alcohol. If you choose to drink alcohol, do so in moderation — this means no more than 2-3 alcoholic beverages/week. Instead of skipping meals in anticipation of indul-
gences, eat regular light meals or snacks throughout the day.
It is also important to continue your fitness routine during the holidays, especially while traveling. Look ahead at your schedule and decide which days you will work out — then stick to that plan! You could also find a workout buddy, such as a spouse or friend. When traveling, consider lifting weights in a hotel gym, bodyweight workouts, running on treadmills or even outside! Aim for at least 15,000 steps per
day; you might discover more of the city you are visiting along the way!
To learn more about what Health Promotions can offer, check out our Facebook page (Ramstein Health Promotion), or visit our office in Building 2117a on Ramstein Air Base, behind the Southside Fitness Center. Winter driving in Germany: USAG RP provides guidance for a smooth ride
by Linda Lambiotte U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs
Are you and your vehicle ready for winter weather?
As the days grow shorter and the temperatures drop, drivers across Germany/ Europe are gearing up for the challenges of winter driving. Whether commuting, taking a road trip, or just running errands, being prepared for the season's unique road hazards is crucial.
Winter driving in Germany presents its own challenges, particularly in rural areas where roads may be icy and snow-covered, and on the autobahn, where drivers must contend with high-speed traffic and potentially hazardous conditions.
“One of the challenges with winter driving in Germany is traversing through narrow roads made even more narrow with cars parking on sides/shoulders of roads in small villages and towns,” said Richard Cruikshank, Safety Office director, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz. “This makes it even more difficult for drivers to pass through when snow and ice are present.”
In addition to commonly narrow roads, situations requiring sudden stops on the autobahn can turn into a major hazard.
“Even though Germany's autobahn is famous for high-speed limits, during winter conditions, drivers need to be cautious and prepared for any sudden, unexpected stops as a result of weather-related hazards, such as black ice, snowdrifts, or vehicles that have lost control,” he said. “In all scenarios, it is important for drivers to exercise caution and slow down to allow sufficient
time to maneuver and react to changing conditions.”
Winter driving conditions can vary greatly depending on what region you live and the routes you take in your commutes and daily activities. In regions with heavy snowfall, drivers must be prepared to contend with icy roads, snow-covered visibility, and reduced traction on roads. In other regions, winter drivers face fog, freezing rain, and/or black ice.
A good practice to follow when driving in winter conditions to avoid accidents is to maintain a safe following distance, especially with reduced daylight hours.
“A general rule of thumb is to leave at least one car length of space for every 16 kilometers per hour (10 miles per hour) of speed,” he said. “This allows for extra stopping and reaction time, which is crucial especially on slippery winter roads. By spacing yourself from the vehicle in front of you, you reduce the risk of being involved in a rear-end collision.”
It is recommended for drivers to keep a cold weather safety gear bag in the car in the event they become stranded or stuck in their vehicle during winter weather, Cruikshank said.
“You never know when you might find yourself stranded on the side of the road or stuck in a traffic jam," he added. "To be prepared, it's a good idea to keep a roadside emergency kit in your car, stocked with essentials like water, blankets, snacks, a flashlight, and a portable battery pack to keep your cell phone charged.”
He also suggested keeping the gas tank full during the winter months. “This will allow you to start your car periodically to warm up, which can be a lifesaver if you're stranded for an extended period,” he said.
“Regularly running the engine will help keep you warm and safe until help arrives."
Cruikshank emphasized the importance of winter driving safety by highlighting three key preparations.
Firstly, to stay safe on the roads, drivers should ensure they have the required winter tires, which are mandatory, and keep their vehicle equipped with the proper antifreeze for winter weather conditions. All new winter tires must feature the Alpine Symbol, which is represented by a threepeak mountain with a snowflake at its center. All-season tires or winter tires labeled with M+S (and no alpine symbol) that were manufactured before 2018, are no longer accepted as of Sep. 30. For more information on the new tires’ requirements, please visit https://www.army.mil/ article/279465
Secondly, again, it’s a good idea to have a winter weather emergency kit in the car, including an ice scraper or other means to de-ice lights.
Finally, in low-visibility conditions, drivers should take extra precautions by turning on hazard lights if traffic is slowing ahead or if driving in hazardous conditions.
Additional tips to prepare for winter driving include:
• Make sure your vehicle is winter-ready: Check your tire pressure, oil, and fluids, and make sure you have the required tires.
• Plan your route: Check the weather forecast and road conditions before you leave and consider taking a different route if conditions are hazardous.
• Avoid distracted driving: Put away your phone and other distractions – keep your eyes on the road at all times.
• Get plenty of rest: Fatigue can be a major factor in winter driving accidents, so make sure you're well-rested before getting behind the wheel.
• Never drive under the influence: The risks of driving under the influence are always present, but they're especially hazardous in winter conditions.
If you do find yourself stranded or stuck, stay calm and follow these steps:
• Call for help: If you have a phone signal, dial 112 for emergency services or reach out to your roadside assistance provider for assistance.
• Stay in your vehicle: If you're unable to get help, stay in your vehicle and keep your engine running to stay warm.
• Conserve energy: Avoid overexerting yourself and try to stay warm and comfortable until help arrives.
Following these tips will help you be prepared and ready for the unique challenges of winter driving, especially in Europe and in Germany. The safety and security of the entire Rheinland-Pfalz community is the garrison’s top priority. Stay alert, stay alive!

The Landesbetrieb Liegenschafts- und Baubetreuung Landau (German State Real Estate and Construction Management), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District, and USAG Rheinland-Pfalz collaborated on the two-year project, with LBB Landau designing and building the state-of-the-art facility.
LBB Landau ensured that all regulations under German law — including safety, environmental and fire protection — were met, while USAG Rheinland-Pfalz will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the building going forward.

“The new central storage facility is intended to optimize work steps by consolidating

He added that the completed project marks an important milestone in the garrison’s commitment to being good neighbors in Germany, going above and beyond to meet and exceed local environmental standards.
“It’s always exciting to celebrate completion of projects and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is proud to deliver projects like this one for the garrison here in Germersheim for the Directorate of Public Works’ Engineer Support Branch, working closely our host nation government partners (LBBLandau),” said U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Europe District Project Engineer Bettina Reinhard.
Reinhard is based in Europe District’s Germersheim Project Office that oversees construction projects at the installation.
Facility operations are set to begin in the first quarter of 2025.

ABC IN KMC: Winter Solstice — a turning point
by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
The winter solstice occurs around Dec. 21 in the northern hemisphere. It marks the shortest day and longest night of the year. As the Earth tilts away from the sun, sunlight becomes scarce, but this day also symbolizes hope.
The winter solstice in Kaiserslautern occurs on Saturday, Dec. 21, at 10:20 a.m. On this day, the amount of daylight is nine hours and 11 minutes shorter than during the June solstice. It’s the shortest day of the year in most locations north of the equator.
The solstices, both in winter and summer, have played a key role in history throughout the world. There are many legends and myths linked to the natural phenomenon.
Romans celebrated the winter solstice with the Saturnalia festival held from Dec. 17 to Dec. 24. During this week-long event, social norms were upended. Masters served their servants, gambling was allowed and feasting and drinking were abundant.
Iranians observe the solstice with Yalda Night. Families gather to eat, drink, and recite poetry. Red-colored foods symbolize the rising sun and the return of life.
Yule, from which modern Christmas traditions emerged, involved hearty feasts, decorations, and gifts. Elves or old men bearing gifts were part of the festivities. Germanic and Viking tribes that settled throughout Europe honored the winter solstice with the Yul Festival, derived from the old Norse word “jól,” with feasting, drinking and lighting fires. The Yule log was also common and families would burn a large log to bring warmth and light during the darkest days.
Iconic Stonehenge aligns with both the winter and summer solstices. On the winter solstice, thousands gather to witness the setting sun perfectly aligned with the stones.
The vast circular monument Newgrange in Ireland predates Stonehenge. It aligns with the solstice, and during sunrise, a beam of light pierces through its entrance. It is located north of Dublin and each year the winter solstice attracts attention when spectators gather at the ancient tomb to wait for dawn, as people did more than 5,000 years ago.
In Egypt, the Temple of Karnak illuminates during the winter solstice. The rising sun shines directly between two pillars, celebrating the god Horus.
The term “Rauhnächte”
(rough nights) refers to a Germanic tradition during the twelve nights between Christmas Eve (Dec. 24) and Epiphany (Jan. 6). These nights were considered magical and liminal, bridging the old year and the new. Here are some aspects of this tradition: Wild Spirits and Ancestral Connections: During Rauhnächte people believed that the veil between the physical world and the spirit realm was thin. Ancestors and spirits could visit or influence the living. To honor their ancestors, families left food and drink outside their homes or lit candles in windows.
Wild Huntsman: The Wild Hunt is a captivating folklore motif found across various northern, western, and eastern European cultures. It involves a spectral chase led by a mythological figure, accompanied by a ghostly or supernatural group of hunters. The Wild Hunt typically features a leader associated with Odin in Germanic legends.
In Germany, it’s known as the Wilde Jagd (Wild Hunt). England has its versions, including Herlaþing, Woden’s Hunt, and Gabriel’s Hounds. This might also be attributed to the polar lights best seen in northern Europe during winter nights. So, imagine the eerie sight of spectral riders
and hounds galloping through the night sky — a haunting tale that transcends time and borders!
In some areas in southern Germany there was a superstition that if you did laundry and hung up clothes, evil spirits could enter them and bring bad luck and havoc to the wearers. Dreams during the “rough nights” were also said to be especially intense.
Various Native American tribes, both north and south, also celebrated the solstice. Ojibwe (Minnesota Chippewa Tribe): Traditional storytelling was reserved for winter months. Elders entertained and educated children with stories during long evenings. San Carlos Apache (Arizona): Elders invited storytellers who shared tales throughout the night. Ho-Chunk Nation of Wisconsin waited for the Winter Moon and snow on Mother Earth before sharing stories.
The Aztecs celebrated the winter solstice as a day of renewal and observed that the sun appeared to stop moving for a few days around this time, which led them to call it the “sun stopped” moment. During the winter solstice, they honored Huitzilopochtli, their sun god, by performing rituals and fasting. Mayans considered the winter solstice a symbol of renewal, signaling the gradual return of light.
These ancient rituals remind us of our shared human connection to nature, storytelling, and the promise of brighter days ahead. And, we have adopted many of the traditions today and enjoy cozy family gatherings, light the fireplace, decorate trees with bright lights and ornaments, and spend valuable time with friends during the holiday season.
If you live in a smaller town with little light pollution, you might be able to spot some of these star constellations on a clear night: Orion, Sirius, Taurus and Gemini.
Two positive aspects of the short days and very long nights: Starting Dec. 22, each day gets about three minutes longer. And, in the southern hemisphere with long days, penguins in Antarctica can enjoy 24-hour sunbathing for about 11 weeks!
Wishing you all a peaceful and fun holiday season and a great start into the new year. If you have any topics, items of interest or ideas regarding the KMC, Germany or Europe for ABC in KMC articles next year, we are open to suggestions. Please share your ideas at: gina.hutchinsinman.de@us.af.mil

Here are five ideas to help you make the most of the holiday season in Kaiserslautern.
1. Take a night walk in the city. Winter has the power to turn even the most active among us into hibernators. Fight the urge to sleep, especially when the sun goes down early!
Fortunately, Kaiserslautern has some great hibernation antidotes. One of the best ones involves bundling up and walking around the city center after dark. It’s like a whole new city. Gaslights, street lights, and shop lights illuminate pedestrian plazas. During the Christmas season, you get an added bonus of beautiful illumination.
Shopping isn’t required to make this a refreshing outing. Even if you’re only going to sneak peaks at shop windows, the time spent will be well worth it. As a bonus: lots of shops in downtown K-town are now offering no-fee toilets!
2. Check out the Christmas markets.
That’s right. Kaiserslautern has markets, as in plural, as in more than one. The Fruchthalle, in the city center, offers a large variety of vendors, goods, and goodies. There is also a smaller outdoor market nearby. This year, markets will be open through Dec. 23. There will also be a New Year’s Market from Dec. 27-30.
In addition, lots of smaller villages surrounding Kaiserslautern offer their own Christmas markets. These include Otterberg, Johanniskreuz/Trippstadt, Falkenstein, Homburg and many, many others. Get out there and immerse yourself in the fantastic scented clouds of gingerbread and mulled wine!
3. Tour neighboring villages.
Speaking of KMC villages, many of them will be well worth your while, for a variety of reasons. Otterberg has a lovely downtown, an ancient church that’s worth a look, and a cute little plaza. Föckelberg offers incredible views of the surrounding area. Neuleningen has an always-open castle, narrow winding streets, and breathtaking views of the Rhine Valley.
The list goes on and on. If you live anywhere near Kaiserslautern, there are sure to be loads of hidden gems less than
30 minutes from your place. Ask your friends for tips. Ask your neighbors. Do a little research. And then start your visit!
4. Hit the forests.
German forests are excellent. Trails that wind through trees are outstanding for many reasons: the route stays the same, and the scenery changes every season. You never have to bring your passport. You can walk (almost) wherever you want. They’re free. And they give you hours and hours of fun and fresh air. You can get exercise, see new things, stumble across hidden treasures (like wild animals and great views). Forests are everywhere around Kaiserlsautern, and they rock.
5. Try out winter specialties. So when you’re done braving the great outdoors, there’s also this: Germans know how to eat well and drink well during the holidays.
If you haven’t done so already, join them. Put down those microwave taquitos and frozen pizzas. Save that run to the food court. Find a butcher’s shop, a bakery, a farmer’s market or a Christmas market. Start simple by looking up German recipes online. Discover mulled wine, or Pfalz wine, or German beer. Buy a bottle of sprudel and learn to love the bubbles.
Kaiserslautern has all of these things, in spades. If you’re going to stay local during the holidays, don’t be afraid to try living like a local. It makes the season all the more magical!
