AMC welcomes new commander

Story and photos by Air Mobility Command Public Affairs

Air Mobility Command officially welcomed its new commander during a ceremony held at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois, Sep. 9.

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David W. Allvin presided over the event as Gen. John D. Lamontagne assumed command from Gen. Michael A. Minihan, who is retiring after 34 years of service.

“You can’t win the fight if you can’t get there, and you can’t sustain the fight [without Air Mobility],” Allvin said, reflecting. “I could not be more proud to be here today and sharing this stage with these great mobility leaders and be a part of this passing of the baton to keep this air mobility machine moving. The country depends on it, and [Americans] can depend on it.”

Gen. Jacqueline Van Ovost, U.S. Transportation Command commander, also provided comments during the ceremony, remarking on Minihan’s leadership and AMC.

“The absolute right leader at the right time; Minihan’s initiative, passion and determination ignited such a desire to win in this new strategic environment

that the culture and the lexicon of the command is changing…,” Van Ovost said. “Your steady hand on the yoke enabled AMC’s Airmen to better understand their key role in the National Defense Strategy. You unleashed them to innovate and ultimately began the process of posturing the mobility force to explode into theater, delivering lethality.”

Minihan, who led AMC through one of its most dynamic periods of global engagement, received high praise from Allvin and Van Ovost for his contributions. Minihan also received the Distinguished Service Medal, second oak leaf cluster, for his exceptionally meritorious service to the Department of Defense as the AMC commander.

Van Ovost also gave nod to the AMC’s accomplishments over the past three years, including Mobility Guardian 2023, support to Operation Allies Refuge, deploying forces to counter Russian aggression in Ukraine, and projecting power forward for the Israel/Hamas conflict. She noted the impressive background of the incoming AMC commander as well.

“Members of AMC, you are gaining a tremendous leader who is

ready to build upon your legacy and recent successes,” Van Ovost said to the room of Airmen.

“AMC’s ability to deliver the immediate Joint Force is the bedrock of our national defense strategy and I have no doubt that you are the right leader to maintain this strategic advantage,” she said to Lamontagne.

Lamontagne most recently served as deputy commander of U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa. He brings a wealth of experience from major humanitarian operations to large-scale contingency responses. His prior position required laser focus on ensuring strategic mobility and readiness across a vast theater of operations, which included Europe, Africa and Asia.

As AMC commander, Lamontagne will oversee the employment and integration of nearly 107,000 Total Force Airmen and more than 1,100 aircraft. AMC provides critical support to America’s military through airlift, aerial refueling, aeromedical evacuation and air mobility operations, in addition to responding to humanitarian crises across the globe.

“To the men and women of Air Mobility Command, we stand

here today on the shoulders of giants that have preceded us both personally and organizationally… it is a long proud legacy,” said Lamontagne, in his first remarks as AMC commander. “Some things have changed, and some things have not… Our nation and our predecessors possess an asymmetric advantage, and that asymmetric advantage is the ability to project power anywhere in the world at

the time and place of our choosing. And only this command can do it!”

Air Mobility Command is essential to the nation’s ability to project combat power and respond to crises worldwide. Whether delivering supplies in conflict zones, evacuating the wounded, or fueling fighter jets in midair, AMC ensures that America’s military remains agile, responsive and effective.

Airman awarded Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement

After more than two years of getting lost in the paper shuffle of military bureaucracy, an Airman was finally awarded a rare combat decoration for providing critical care to service members during a largescale aerial evacuation mission.

U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Matthew J. Parker received the Distinguished Flying Cross with a “C” device, denoting a combat award, at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Sep. 6, from U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Adrienne Williams, commander of the 86th Airlift Wing based at Ramstein Air Base.

Parker was recognized for the critical care he provided to 11 multi national and joint service members during a mass casualty evacuation operation in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel at Hamid Karzai International Airport Aug. 27, 2021.

As the sole respiratory therapist, Parker oversaw the airway, endotracheal tube management, and preflight preparation for three ventilated patients, ensuring the safe transport of all the patients to higher echelon of care and further surgical intervention, according to the citation.

Parker joins the distinguished ranks of notable aviators who were

awarded the DFC, such as Brig. Gen Chuck Yeager, first pilot to break the sound barrier, and astronauts

Neil Armstrong and John Glenn.

“Most recipients of the Distinguished Flying Cross are, or were, pilots,” said Williams.

“Master Sgt. Parker adds a different perspective to the legacy of the award for performing critical medical duties during flight.”

After the initial award submis-

sion was lost, Parker reached out to a senior enlisted leader for assistance.

“I reached out to an Air Force chief master sergeant, who inspired me in the past, for help,” added Parker. I was surprised at how quickly she responded to my request for assistance.”

While Parker was naturally disappointed in the delay of receiving his award, he ended up extending his enlistment in the Air Force as

a result of the leadership and care exhibited by senior leaders in the military.

“As medics we save lives,” added Parker. “Everybody who works in a hospital contributes to saving lives in some way. That is what we do. And we are lucky to have leaders who shape the lives and futures of service members. As result, we are inspired to continue our service in the military.”

Living Pattern Survey Town Hall

The Living Pattern Survey is more than just a routine data collection exercise — it’s a critical tool that directly impacts the financial well-being of service members stationed overseas. The LPS seeks to understand where Service members and their families shop and how they divide their purchases among local markets, U.S. Government facilities, and online stores. The insights gained from this triennial survey influence adjustments to the Overseas Cost of Living Allowance, which can significantly affect the disposable income of service members.

What is the survey and what does it address?

The Living Pattern Survey is required once every three years to determine where service members shop and how they allocate their purchases between local markets, U.S. Government, and online shopping facilities. The survey is fully automated and can be completed on any personal computer.

Who is allowed to take the survey?

The survey should be completed by service members with the assistance of all shoppers in the household. It asks service members and their families to identify the local market outlets where they usually shop

and how they allocate their purchases between different sources of supply. Participation in the LPS should be limited to service members who have been at the duty station for three months or longer.

Where and when can members take the survey?

The survey will be available on the Defense Travel Management Office website September 1-30 at the following link: https://www.defensetravel.dod.mil/Community/ se/251137451FAA2705. This survey can be completed in approximately 30 to 45 minutes.

What is the impact of taking the survey? How does it benefit the KMC?

The LPS is used to identify primary and secondary outlets where service members do most of their shopping. Based on the results of the LPS, the Retail Price Schedule is priced according to typical family shopping of the average service member. The LPS can also lead to changes to OCOLA indexes which can increase or reduce OCOLA rates year-to-year.

Can OSD provide expectations with regards to the timeline of the results of this survey?

The Allowances Division strives to have results of the surveys available within 90 days, but several factors can delay results.

is utilized for the calculation since LPS figures only include offbase stores and prices?

Regarding on-base prices, Defense Commissary Agency and the Army and Air Force Exchange Services directly provide the OSD Allowances Division pricing of the same market basket items every quarter for all their overseas locations. The Allowances Division then uses that on-base cost data and the off-base cost, LPS data, that is obtained from each installation in the analysis to establish the price used.

The LPS is a triennial survey that impacts the financial wellbeing of service members stationed overseas, so it’s important for them to provide input. It is an essential tool that significantly impacts the financial landscape for service members stationed overseas. By capturing detailed insights into where and how service members and their families shop, the survey directly influences adjustments to OCOLA, which in turn affects their overall financial stability. The results of the LPS, along with other related surveys, ensure that OCOLA rates are accurately tailored to reflect the actual expenses faced by service members. Ultimately, the LPS and related surveys are critical in ensuring that service members receive fair compensation that reflects their true cost of living, making participation in these surveys a valuable contribution to the entire military community.

Landstuhl

Through a rigorous and comprehensive evaluation process that spanned 14 months, the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma recently reverified Landstuhl Regional Medical Center as the only U.S. Level II Trauma Center, military or civilian, overseas.

This distinction will allow LRMC to continue to provide critical trauma care capability to more than 152,000 total beneficiaries, as well as more than 81,000 service members, 70,000 supported family members and civilians, and 6,000 employees and associated personnel from various overseas U.S. government agencies.

For the forward deployed warfighter, to any of four unified combatant command area of operations across three continents, LRMC is often the first stop for those in need of critical trauma care. This care dramatically reduces the risk of morbidity and mortality for those injured service members.

With a major conflict currently raging several hundred miles east of LRMC’s location, LRMC’s stateof-the-art medical capability has been extended to several Ukrainian service members who have been seriously injured in the fighting.

LRMC is also certified by the German Trauma Network as a regional Level II Trauma Center, the only U.S. medical facility that

is dual-certified in the U.S. and a host nation.

As a seasoned combat trauma care provider, the stakes were high for U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. (Dr.) Mary Stuever, LRMC’s trauma medical director, and her trauma team to ensure that LRMC met the high standards of excellence expected of a Level II Trauma Center during

the evaluation process by the ACS.

“When I was deployed to Afghanistan, I was a trauma medical director in a Role 3 facility,” added Stuever. “I knew that once I stabilized the patient, I could get them back to Landstuhl within 8 hours, and they would get everything that they needed. If we (LRMC) were not a Level II Trauma

Center, we would essentially offer less care than some of our Role 3 hospitals.”

According to the American College of Surgeons, Level II Trauma Centers are expected to provide initial definitive trauma care for a wide range of injuries and injury severity and may take on additional responsibilities in the

region related to education, system leadership, and disaster planning.

During Stuever’s deployment to Afghanistan, she was grateful for the reach back support she received from LRMC for medical consultation and feedback.

“In Afghanistan I was able to reach back to LRMC in relatively the same time zone and time of day,” Stuever added. “If I needed consultation, and it was in the middle of the night back in the U.S., you may not get someone to answer the phone. But I always called LRMC and immediately had the assistance I needed.”

Now, Stuever is providing the critical, life-saving trauma consultation to military medical assets that are forward deployed.

The thorough and protracted reverification process by the American College of Surgeons kicked off in February 2023 with the virtual site-survey that occurred Apr. 15 - 16.

“The virtual site survey covered over 100 standards and sub-standards, and over 230 attachments of protocols and measures of compliance that were uploaded to the ACS website,” said Connie Johnson, LRMC’s trauma program manager.

“Our service members are willing to put their life on the line and deploy to these combat zones. The least we can do is to make certain that they get the very best medical care that we can provide,” said Sean Kelley, LRMC’s trauma performance improvement coordinator.

USAG Rheinland-Pfalz joins families honoring victims of 1982 Chinook helicopter crash in Mannheim

On Sep. 11, families and friends of the 46 victims of the Chinook helicopter crash that occurred in 1982 near Mannheim gathered at the stele located at Neuostheim Airport to commemorate their loved ones.

Command Sgt. Maj. Raymond Wrensch, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz, along with a group of retired uniformed members of the Bundeswehr, assembled at the stele, where flower arrangements and wreaths were placed in preparation for the official commemoration.

Mannheim Deputy Mayor Diana Pretzell provided opening remarks.

“What should have been an extraordinary spectacle to mark the 375th anniversary of the city of Mannheim and the ‘International Aviation Days’ turned into a tragedy within a few minutes,” she said. “Forty-six people lost their lives in front of their families and 3,000 visitors who had come to celebrate this anniversary together. A few seconds changed the lives of many families forever.”

On Sep. 11, 1982, the City of Mannheim requested two Chinook helicopters to drop sky divers during the city’s 375th anniversary air show. Parachutists from Mannheim and its sister cities Toulon, France, and Swansea, Great Britain, aimed to set a record with their formation jump.

However, only one helicopter was used for the mission, carrying 46 sky divers despite having only 33 available seats, resulting in 11 individuals standing.

After a 12-minute ascent, the helicopter, designated 292, reported a problem and began descending. The pilot of a second Chinook, observing from the ground, contacted 292 and learned they were experiencing a flickering caution light and noise issues. As 292 attempted to land, the crew decided to divert to avoid a crowded area. However, during the descent, the helicopter began to break apart in mid-air, with witnesses reporting loud noises and the aft rotor blades detaching.

The helicopter ultimately crashed onto the autobahn between Mannheim and Heidelberg, resulting in a massive fireball upon impact. The estimated “G” force at impact was 200, leading to instantaneous death for those aboard.

All passengers lost their lives, including 23 French, nine British, six Germans, and eight Americans, including the five-person crew and two American Forces Network reporters.

Pretzell said that, despite the sorrow associated with the accident, the cities of Mannheim, Toulon, and Swansea, along with their American counterparts, have strengthened their bonds through shared grief.

“On this day, 42 years ago, everyone aboard that helicopter sought to demonstrate international solidarity and understanding,” she said. “Let us carry this inspiring motivation with us as we work to unite people and transcend borders. We all remain committed to the values of tolerance and openness. We are committed to international understanding and peace.”

The ceremony concluded with a moment of silent remembrance, during which attendees approached the stele to pay their respects.

One year after the accident, a monument by British sculptor Michael Sandle was unveiled at Mannheim City Airport, formerly Mannheim airfield. A memorial at Plage du Mourillon in Toulon honors the victims by listing their names and is often visited for remembrance.

Understanding African Swine Fever, potential risks

Recent reports of African Swine Fever, a viral infection exclusively affecting domestic and feral pigs, being present in Germany has brought many cause for concern. Although it is not a risk to humans or other animals, there are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to the illness.

The disease is almost always fatal with no known cure or vaccination. According to the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, the best way to prevent the disease from spreading is hygiene measures following the Pig Husbandry Hygiene Ordinance and population control.

U.S. Army Lt. Col. Shawn Basinger, Public Health Command Europe Veterinary Services Division director, encourages dog owners to keep their pets on leashes to prevent scaring

wild pigs into uninfected areas. Other preventative measures include keeping trash in sealed containers and not shipping or taking pork products out of an infected zone.

Basinger also stated consuming meat from a pig infected with the fever does not pose a health risk. However, whole pork should always be cooked to at least 63 degrees Celsius (145 degrees Fahrenheit) and ground pork to 71 degrees Celsius (160 degrees Fahrenheit) to prevent other diseases.

If Kaiserslautern Military Community members come across a sick or deceased pig on base they should notify the KMC Natural Resource Management office at their DSN: 314-478-8411. If off base, they should contact the local German government veterinarian.

More information can be found on the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture or Rhein-Pfalz District websites. “Attention!

Saber Junction 24 embodies train to win mindset

Innovative mobile app streamlines airfield assessment for airborne operations

by Capt. Jacob Murray 435th Air Ground Operations Wing

by Sgt. Elliott Kim

U.S. Army Sgt. Tucker Smith and Sgt. Matthews Luz, unmanned aerial systems operators with the 1st Squadron, 91st Cavalry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade, prepare to launch a Skydio X10D unmanned aerial system during Saber Junction at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center in Hohenfels, Sep. 9. SJ24 is a multinational airborne exercise led by the U.S. Army in Europe, showcasing the abilities of 173rd Airborne Brigade to swiftly deploy across Europe alongside our allies and partners, underscoring the commitment to readiness, interoperability and collective defense to maintain regional stability and security.

“Train to Win,” the driving force at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center in Hohenfels, Germany, where United States Army Soldiers along with its NATO allies and partners are pushing themselves to the limit to ensure they can succeed in any conflict.

The “Train to Win” motto represents JMRC’s dedication to creating a challenging and thorough training environment to ensure units are prepared to succeed.

“We push this motto to the training units here by offering them the opportunity to engage with a living, thinking oppositional forces and civilian population, with the expectation that they get better at accomplishing their mission every day they are in the box,” said Maj. Daniel Abaldo, an information operations observer coach trainer for JMRC Operations Group, “Mustang” Team.

The commitment to providing such rigorous training is more than tactical skills, it’s about fostering a mentality of readiness and toughness.

“Train to Win is more about toughness, it’s more about readiness, it’s more about fitness,” said Capt. Eugene Patton, commander for Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 1st Squadron, 91st Cavalry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade. “Things like this puts you in the crucible of learning more about the people around you, and yourself.”

The emphasis on mental and physical resilience aligns with the Army’s broader efforts to enhance operational readiness.

“What happens when you’re cold? What happens when you’re

tired? What happens when you haven’t had sleep? You need to have that mentality,” said Patton. “That’s what allows us to say ‘Train to Win,’ it’s taking all those intangible things, and those things allow you to win in environments that might seem insurmountable.”

Integrating cutting-edge technology into the battlefield has become a significant part of training exercises. As part of this push, drone technology has evolved as a critical component of modern combat requiring comprehensive training environments, such as Saber Junction, to train Soldiers not only to prepare, but to win.

“As war and technology progresses in today’s world, I think drone warfare is one of the biggest, if not the most crucial elements right now,” said Staff Sgt. Matthews Luz, an unmanned aircraft system operator for Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 1-91 Cavalry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade. “There’s a lot of footage you can see on both sides. Putting drones in [combat], taking people out of the fight increases survivability and capabilities.”

“Train to Win” is a universal principle, not limited to specific units or teams. It’s a motto that can be embodied by anyone training at JMRC.

This motto pushes every Soldier to move beyond competence and achieve mastery in their craft.

“Train to Win is constantly training, working until your systems and everything you have in place is refined,” said U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer 3 Haiha Vu, an observer coach with “Falcon” Team, JMRC. “Amateurs will train until they get it right, professionals will train until there’s no mistakes.”

The U.S. Air Force has introduced a new tool designed to streamline the process of assessing and certifying airfields for aircraft landings, particularly in austere environments. Developed by members of the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing Innovation Team, the new mobile application enhances efficiency, reduces human error, and provides real-time data to support rapid decision-making in the field.

The Wing Innovation Team is an element of Project Arc, a larger Air Force initiative. Project Arc places military personnel and government civilians into operational wings across the globe. They collaborate with pilots, maintainers, logisticians, and other technical roles within the Department of the Air Force to implement cutting-edge technology, conduct experiments, prototype new solutions, and rapidly adapt to stay ahead of the technology used by U.S. adversaries.

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Justin Salvione, an airborne air traffic controller with the 435th Contingency Response Squadron, and U.S. Air Force 1st Lt. Trevor Akers, a developmental engineer from the 96th Cyberspace Test Group currently supporting the 435th AGOW’s Innovation Program, spearheaded this effort.

The traditional method of assessing airfields involves a labor-intensive process that relies on pen-and-paper documentation, manual calculations and the coordination of multiple specialists. These assessments are critical for determining whether an airfield can safely accommodate specific aircraft, such as the C-130 Hercules or C-17 Globemaster III, especially in combat zones or remote locations.

“When we go out to survey a landing zone, we evaluate everything from the strength of the landing surface to the glide slope ratio, ensuring there’s enough clearance for an aircraft to land safely,” Salvione said.

“Traditionally, this meant compiling data manually, which could take hours and leave room for human error.”

Enter Akers, who pursued the vision of Tech. Sgt. Benjamin Stewart, a contingency response airfield manager with 435 CRS, who saw an an opportunity to streamline this process through digital innovation.

“The idea was to eliminate the manual calculations and paperwork, replacing them with a mobile application that could do everything on the spot,” Akers said. “This allows us to gather and process data two to three times faster than before.”

The mobile app allows airfield assessment teams to input data directly into their devices while in the field. This data includes measurements of surface conditions, potential obstacles and the strength of the airfield’s pavement or ground surface. The app then automatically calculates the viability of the airfield for different aircraft, providing an immediate green, yellow or red light for each criterion.

“The app not only saves time but also reduces the risk of human error,” Salvione said. “Instead of three people calculating different aspects of the assessment, the app centralizes everything, ensuring that all data is consistent and accurate.”

One of the most significant advantages of this digital approach is the ability to quickly generate and share reports.

“We can now download a comprehensive report with just a few clicks and share it with HHQ teams instantly,” Akers said. “This capability is crucial when time is of the essence, such as during agile combat employment scenarios.”

The new tool is particularly valuable for the DAF’s Agile Combat Employment strategy, which emphasizes flexibility and speed in deploying forces to austere environments. The 435th CRS’s Airborne Assessment Team — the only one of its kind in the Air Force — often

deploys to assess potential landing zones before the arrival of ‘openthe-base forces.’

“Our team can parachute into a location, assess the land, and relay our findings back to leadership with a four-hour cap,” Salvione said. “With this app, we can expedite the process even further, allowing for quicker decision making on whether or not to bring in U.S. or partner nations forces or aircraft.”

Akers also highlighted future applications of the app such as calculating the glide slope ratio, which determines if there is enough clearance for an aircraft to land.

“We’re actively working on adding this functionality, along with a calculator for determining the size of drop zones based on the type and quantity of equipment or personnel being deployed.”

While the app already offers improvements over traditional methods, the development team sees potential for even more enhancements.

“We’re constantly coming up with new ideas,” Akers said. “For example, we’re looking into integrating a feature that would allow users to input specific mission parameters — such as the number of personnel and equipment to be dropped — so that the app can automatically calculate the required size of a drop zone.”

Akers said that the development has been a team effort, with input and feedback from a wide range of Airmen, engineers and commanders.

“We’ve only been working on this for a short time, but the progress we’ve made is incredible,” Akers said. “We’re excited to see where it goes next and how it can further support the Air Force’s mission.”

As the app continues to grow in functionality, it could become a valuable tool for airfield assessments and beyond. Whether in peacetime or deployment, the ability to accurately assess landing zones could make a significant difference in the success of future missions.

ABC IN KMC: Altweibersommer

A season of color and celebration

As the vibrant hues of summer give way to the rich, warm tones of autumn, Germany transforms into a picturesque landscape filled with cultural festivities and natural beauty. Fall in Germany is a time of celebration, reflection, and enjoyment of the great outdoors with colorful red, yellow and purplish forests.

Germany’s indian summer

Altweibersommer, often referred to as the German equivalent of “Indian Summer,” is a delightful meteorological phenomenon that occurs in early autumn, typically between late September and October. This period is characterized by a stretch of warm, sunny days that provide a final taste of summer before the onset of the cooler fall and winter months.

The term “Altweibersommer” (literally old wives’ summer) has an interesting etymology. It is derived from the old German word “weiben,” which means “to weave” and refers to the fine, silvery threads of spider webs that are often seen floating in the air during this time, resembling the gray hair of elderly women. These threads are produced by young spiders, known as Baldachinspinnen, which use them to travel through the air.

Equinox: Beginning of fall

The autumn equinox this year occurs Sep. 22, at 2:43 p.m. local time and marks the official start of fall, when day and night are approximately equal in length. It’s a time when the country begins to embrace the cooler weather and the changing colors of the leaves.

Many people take advantage of the pleasant weather to go hiking, cycling or simply enjoying a leisurely walk through the painted forest of the Pfälzerwald.

With Kaiserslautern being right in the heart of it, it’s time to don your hiking boots, but it is also a popular time for festivals and outdoor markets.

One seasonal highlight is the Deutsches Weinlesefest in Neustadt/Weinstrasse from Sep. 27–Oct. 14. Visitors can not only experience great wine and a carnival atmosphere, but the German Wine Queen is elected and crowned, topped off by a parade on Sunday, Oct. 13. In addition, a relaxing train ride from Kaiserslautern through the Neustadter Valley will lead you straight through the picturesque red and yellow forest.

Chestnuts, Thanksgiving, Farmers’ Market

Another not quite so well-known festival is the Keschdefeschd (Palatinate for Chestnut Festival) in Annweiler near Trifels Castle from Oct. 5 through 6. Local vendors will

offer dishes and products from and with chestnuts, such as sweet and savory variations, chestnut cream, chestnut liqueur, chestnut honey, chestnut flatbread, chestnut mustard and chestnut bread. You can also walk up the hill to visit Trifels Castle, where English King Richard the Lion Heart was held captive in the late 12th century.

In addition to the worldfamous Oktoberfest in Munich until Oct. 6, many regions celebrate Erntedankfest, or Harvest Thanksgiving Festival. These celebrations can include church services, parades, and fairs, where communities come together to give thanks for the harvest and enjoy local produce.

The annual Farmers’ Market in Schneckenhausen (near Otterberg) with over 70 stalls will present a wide range of regional produce, jewelry and decorative items, honey and wines. It has become a highlight in the region’s calendar of events and the market takes place Sep. 29 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Take a walk on the wild side Wildpark Betzenberg is located in the eastern part of Kaiserslautern, behind Kleber Kaserne and across from Gasthaus Quack. It offers you the opportunity to see typical animals, home to the Pfälzerwald, and even some ancient species, such as wild horses.

The 25-hectare large premises

are inhabited with aurochs and ancient horses called tarpans. Does, fawns and bucks graze in grassy enclosures. Wild boar and piglets splash in the mud, while goats and their kids play chase. Wisents, an endangered species, are cautiously kept in separate corrals and the fluffy calves may curiously walk up to the fence for a treat of juicy grass offered by a visitor. The animals are kept in spacious enclosures with sheds for weather protection, with the intent of providing the most natural habitat as possible.

A stroll in autumn, in particular during “golden October” — as Germans say — when the leaves of the up to 120-year-old oaks and beeches turn golden brown, red and yellow, is especially spectacular. In addition, fir trees offer a natural “roof” for the animals grazing and curiously observing visitors.

A Sunday walk is always worthwhile and even double the fun with binoculars and camera. Admission is free and parking is available nearby. Visitors are advised that due to uneven inclines and natural, unpaved forest paths, mobility for handicapped individuals is limited and appropriate footwear is recommended, dogs are allowed if leashed at all times.

Pumpkin jungle, Moon fest, Samhain

A further astonishing exhibition worth a visit is the annual

pumpkin display at Gartenschau Kaiserslautern that started Sep. 1 and will run through Oct. 31. This year the exhibit is all about the jungle. A chameleon, a parrot, Baloo and Mowgli, or an orangutan are once again decorated with tens of thousands of pumpkins and bring a jungle flair to the park. You might even discover a mighty pumpkin elephant! Different pumpkins are used to give the figures their color and the palette ranges from white to classic orange decorative pumpkins to blue pumpkins.

Just close by, the Japanese Garten will host a Tsukimi, or Moon Fest, Sep. 20 and 21 from 7 a.m.–10 p.m. The ponds and waterfall will be illuminated, and the garden will offer a diverse evening program.

Last, but not least, the Celtic Village in Steinbach on Donnersberg will again host its annual Samhain Festival Oct. 31. In the evening the village will open its gates for bonfires, handcraft exhibitions, and food and beverages. You can also join on a walk with torches to the spooky Celtic Garden with sculptures and tales of mystic times.

Whether you’re enjoying a local festival, exploring the scenic landscapes, or simply savoring seasonal foods like pumpkin soup, apple strudel or Federweisser, there’s something for everyone to enjoy during this magical time of year.

It is rightly billed as a magical forest and lovely during any month of the year.

Home to the Berchtesgaden National Park, which offers spectacular views, the third largest mountain in Germany and a glacial lake, you’ll experience some of the best nature activities in the country. These include skiing during the winter, rock climbing during the summer, and cycling nearly all year round.

Star of the show: Hiking in Berchtesgaden

But Berchtesgaden really shines when it comes to hiking. In addition to mountain trails — which are many and easily found — walkers have the chance to see a stunning variety of beauty. Check out the Hintersee, a lake which has been a magnet for artists for centuries. While you’re at it, disappear into the Zauberwald for a while:

If you really want to maximize your trail enjoyment, consider an autumn trip to Berchtesgaden. The scenery transforms from staggering to otherworldly. The amazing greens remain in sweeping fields of wild grass and evergreen trees; but the leaves put on a show, with golds, oranges, reds and purples. It is truly an incredible time to be there.

The Berchtesgaden area has trails for all hiking levels — from highly technical to family-friendly. If you’re looking for a challenge, make sure you research your route, gear up, and prepare well. If you’re looking for something incredible and not too difficult, choices abound. You could try the popular Wimbach Gorge hike (which is especially gorgeous — pun

intended — in spring or autumn).

Hikers will find trails that are extremely well-marked, and that follow a color classification system: Yellow trails are adapted for those with limited mobility; blue is for beginners, red for moderate difficulty, and black for high levels of difficulty.

Berchtesgaden Old Town

Ready for some true Bavarian charm? The town of Berchtesgden is filled with both German Alpine loveliness and adventures of a more tranquil sort. The food is hearty, filling, and delicious, and the old town offers ample opportunities for window shopping. If you want a more laid-back weekend, send everyone else to the trails while you relax in one of Berchtesgaden’s thermal spas.

The best thing to do in the old town, however, is just to enjoy it. Wander the

narrow streets. Snap photos. Go out early (before lots more tourists show up in the afternoon) or late (when the lights seem to make the place feel like magic). Berchtesgaden is a fantastic place to unwind and just…be.

Getting to Berchtesgaden

By car, Berchtesgaden is approximately 5.5 hours from Kaiserslautern, 3.5 hours from Stuttgart, and 5.5 hours from Wiesbaden. Check with Deutsche Bahn for train information.
