WELCOME MESSAGE

86th Airlift Wing,

As I settle into my new role as your wing commander, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for the incredibly warm welcome, and share my enthusiasm about the journey ahead.

Since stepping into this position in the past month, I have been deeply impressed by the remarkable dedication, professionalism, and spirit that define this team. It was a privilege to recognize 182 Airmen who were selected to promote to the esteemed rank of Master Sergeant, a clear testament to the exceptional talent and leadership within our ranks. I also had the honor of commending 3 Airlifters of the Week, whose exceptional efforts and achievements form the very foundation of our mission's strength. And let's not forget our long-term host nation employees, who were honored at the Length of Service Ceremony for their 20-45 years of dedicated service. This event was a poi-

gnant reminder of the enduring partnerships and mutual respect that strengthen our Kaiserslautern Military Community.

Having previously served as the 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing commander on this base, I had the privilege to witness the excellence that the 86th Airlift Wing embodies. It is an incredible honor to lead this extraordinary team.

My highest priority as your wing commander is to provide unwavering support. Your hard work and dedication are the backbone of our operations, and I am committed to ensuring you have the resources, training, and opportunities you need to continue to excel. Your well-being and professional development are of the utmost importance to me, and I am dedicated to fostering a culture where everyone feels valued and empowered to do their best work.

Thank you again for such a heartfelt welcome. I look forward to seeing firsthand your incredible contributions to the success of the Global Gateway mission, and providing you with pathways to soar to even greater heights.

ENERGY TIP OF THE WEEK

» If possible, wash laundry loads with only cold water. If using hot/warm water is crucial, remember to use appropriate water-level settings on your washer. Most newer washers/dryers have ECO mode, which uses lower energy and water consumption.

» Where possible, during the summer season, hang your clothes outside and let solar and wind power do the drying. This not only gives laundry a fresh fragrance, but also helps conserve energy.

1 ACOS demonstrates advanced cyber capabilities to COMUSAFE

Story and photos by Capt. Jacob Murray 435th Air Ground Operations Wing Public Affairs

The 1st Air and Space Communications Operations Squadron recently demonstrated its unique cyber capabilities to U.S. Air Force Gen. James Hecker, commander of U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa and NATO Allied Air Command, and other senior leaders. The squadron showcased its leading-edge technology in modern warfighting, demonstrating what is known as Combined Joint All Domain Command and Control.

The only unit of its kind in the

Air Force, the 1st ACOS presented capabilities that integrate air, land, sea, space and cyberspace operations. The demonstration featured an overview of many of the tools 1st ACOS has in its communications spectrum including the Theater Network Operations Center.

“The TNOC is the eyes and ears of the commander of the squadron and provides real time insight into network status across USAFEAFAFRICA,” said Senior Airman Pedro T. Giron, 1st ACOS TNOC lead technician. “TNOC provides 24/7 services to ensure Europe and Africa can meet their classified mission needs, and we are the first call for any operation or missionrelated event.”

The delegation was then briefed on BlackNet, a cyber-transport enabling secure access to any network, adaptable to both garrison and deployed locations. BlackNet can be accessed in multiple ways, such as through a cellular network, satellite or Ethernet cable, to name a few examples. Attendees observed near real-time, reliable, resilient network capability using BlackNet.

“BlackNet is not just a network but a backbone supporting all others,” said Billy Nix, 1st ACOS Lead Network Engineer. “It creates a resilient network that integrates many networks under a single, robust and adaptable framework.”

The team also discussed their Cloud Outpost initiative with the Chief Technology Office. This enhances cloud integration and edge computing, allowing access to critical data even in degraded environments.

The leadership team was then introduced to 1st ACOS’s Global Command and Control System.

“Our advanced version of GCCS offers a comprehensive operational picture for Europe and Africa, significantly enhancing our response capabilities,” said Daniel Erb, 1 ACOS Lead Command and Control System Administrator. “Cloud integration will revolutionize warfighter ability. More powerful edge devices reduce the hardware footprint without sacrificing compute and store power.”

The mission of 1st ACOS is to deliver, operate and defend C5ISR, Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance capabilities to enable the kill-web anytime, anywhere.

The visit concluded with a demonstration of 1 ACOS’s deployable tactical classified equipment. This equipment is vital for expanding the reach of Command and Control capabilities to the forward edge of operations.

“Our capabilities enable highlevel decision-making that reduc-

es the uncertainties of warfare,” said Lt. Col Phillip Alvarez, 1 ACOS Squadron Commander. “This aligns with the combatant commander’s strategies for distributed control and decentralized execution. These capabilities are essential for maintaining superiority in today’s Great Power Competition.”

Gen. Hecker praised the squadron’s efforts, “1 ACOS is effectively tackling some of our most challenging command and control issues. By integrating and enhancing our capabilities, they’re meeting the strategic demands of the European theater.”

Ramstein ALS First Army Instructor

A U.S. Air Force Airman does research during instruction during Airman Leadership School at Kapaun Air Station, May 14. The ALS curriculum prepares senior Airmen and Guardians to be war-fighting Airmen and space professionals who can supervise and lead work teams in an all-domain joint warfighting environment to support the employment of an air and space power.

(Left) Sgt. 1st Class Sonia J. McElfresh, 7th Army Noncommissioned Officer Academy instructor, poses with her Airman Leadership School Class 24-4 flight for a group photo at Ramstein Air Base, May 16. Class 24-4 was instructed in part by Sgt. 1st Class Sonia J. McElfresh, the first Army instructor in the history of Ramstein ALS.

U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Sonia J. McElfresh’s, 7th Army Noncommissioned Officer Academy instructor, journey from the front lines to the classroom is a testament to the transformative power of experience and resilience. Her military career, initially fueled by a desire for challenge, led McElfresh through diverse roles as a chemical specialist and a squad leader.

McElfresh’s military journey was marked by a mix of challenges and triumphs, each experience shaping her into the leader she is today. From deciphering protocols during chemical attacks to leading reconnaissance missions in Hawaii, she navigated through diverse environments.

It was her unexpected transition to the role of an instructor at Ramstein Airman Leadership School that reshaped her trajectory and newfound passion for teaching, and made her the first Soldier to teach an ALS class.

“Sgt. First Class McElfresh was the obvious selection for this opportunity, after she was awarded 2023 Instructor of the Year at the 7th Army Noncommissioned Officer Academy,” said Master Sgt. Nathan Ryan, Ramstein ALS commandant. “The leadership of Ramstein ALS had long toyed with the idea of incorporating a joint instructor. When word of her dedication to excellence reached our schoolhouse, we knew that now was the time to execute this vision.”

Arriving at ALS in Kapaun Air Station, McElfresh found herself

in uncharted territory. Amidst the unfamiliarity, McElfresh discovered a sense of purpose she hadn’t anticipated.

“I never imagined I’d end up teaching,” said McElfresh. “I was always the quiet one, not seeking the spotlight."

Yet, as McElfresh settled into her new role, teaching ALS Class 24-4 from April 15 to May 16, she found fulfillment in guiding and inspiring the next generation of military leaders.

“Transitioning from combat to education wasn’t easy,” said McElfresh. “I had to navigate a new world of teaching and mentorship. Unlike the rigid structures I was used to, ALS fostered lively discussions and encouraged individual expression.”

Adapting to the Air Force class-

room dynamics at the schoolhouse was one of McElfresh’s biggest adjustments. McElfresh found joy in this collaborative learning atmosphere, recognizing the value of exchanging ideas and active engagement in the learning process.

“Almost immediately, Sgt. 1st Class McElfresh became a part of the family amongst our cadre,” said Master Sgt. Ryan, “Amongst the students, she brought an unparalleled outlook to one of the most crucial curriculum outcomes at Ramstein ALS: Joint Warfighting. With very little preparation time, she had no problem picking up an Air Force lesson plan and delivering it with nothing short of quality, resulting in countless praises from students long after graduation. Ramstein ALS is proud of her achievements and thankful for

her contribution to the development of our Cadre and future Non Commissioned Officers.”

McElfresh’s dedication to her students shines through as she reflects on her time as an instructor. She hopes to inspire others to embrace change and pursue their passions with courage and conviction.

“I take pride in witnessing the growth and development of my students,” McElfresh said. “From instilling confidence to fostering critical thinking skills, it’s rewarding to see them flourish.”

As she leaves her current assignment she does so with a sense of fulfillment and accomplishment.

“Though my path may have been winding and unpredictable,”

McElfresh said, “I remain committed to service and the pursuit of excellence.”

For McElfresh, the journey from Soldier to educator has been transformative. Switching from the operational to the front lines of the classroom, she has embraced the challenge with humility and dedication to leave a lasting impact on all those she encounters. Through her experiences, McElfresh has learned the resilience and adaptability that defines the military ethos.

(Left) U.S. Air Force Airmen in Ramstein Airman Leadership School listen to an instruction during class at Kapaun Air Station, May 14. ALS is the first level of professional military education for enlisted Airmen to experience. ALS is designed to be an entry level leadership enhancement course to prepare senior Airmen for positions of greater responsibility by strengthening their ability to lead, follow and manage while also gaining a broader understanding of the military profession and their role within the Air and Space Forces.

USAG RP commemorates 249 years of Army’s service,

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz joins the nation in celebrating the U.S. Army’s 249th birthday on June 14. Today, the Army commemorates nearly two and a half centuries of steadfast service and sacrifice.

Founded on June 14, 1775, the Continental Army was established by the Second Continental Congress to unify the fight against British rule. Over the years, the Army has played a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s history, from securing independence in the Revolutionary War to serving in conflicts across the globe.

“Just as our own birthday’s pass, the Army’s birthday is a chance to reflect on the past year — appreciating the challenges our service has overcome,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Raymond Wrensch, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz. “This reflection is not limited to only the last year but the full history of our nation’s oldest service.”

The Army’s history is rich with stories of heroism and resilience. From the battlefields of World War I to the deserts of the Middle East, Soldiers have demonstrated unparalleled bravery. The Army’s mission has evolved over the centuries, but its core values of loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage have remained constant.

As the Army looks to the future, it continues to innovate and adapt to meet the challenges of a changing world. Modernization efforts are underway to ensure that soldiers are equipped with the best technology and training.

“I have served for 20 of the Army’s 249 years and can affirm positive change is inevitable,” said Wrensch.

The 249th birthday celebration includes a series of events and ceremonies across military installations worldwide, honoring the Army’s history and the sacrifices made by soldiers and their families.

As the Army approaches its 250th year, it remains a symbol of strength and resilience, ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead.

“Our nation’s sons and daughters will continue to carry the heartbeat of the Army for another 249 years, ensuring our freedom and liberties remain intact,” said Wrensch. “This celebration is a reminder that no matter what, ‘the Army goes rolling along.’”

Berlin Airlift ‘Candy Bomber’ legacy lives on in new Air Traffic Control Tower named in his memory

When millions of Germans living in West Berlin were cut off from the rest of the world by a Soviet Union blockade in 1948 it kicked off the Berlin Airlift — the largest humanitarian airlift in history.

One of the heroes of the Berlin Airlift that has stood out over the years was U.S. Air Force airlift pilot Col. Gail S. Halvorsen. In addition to delivering lifesaving supplies like food, fuel and medicine, Halvorsen began dropping candy to lift the spirits of the children and others suffering in West Berlin during the blockade. He started a trend that resulted in 23 tons of chocolate and other candies being delivered during the airlift and has gone down in history as the “Candy Bomber.”

Halvorsen passed in 2022, but one way his legacy will live on will be as the namesake of the new Col. Gail S. Halvorsen Tower dedicated during U.S. Army Garrison’s Berlin Airlift 75th Anniversary celebrations.

Members of the late Halvorsen’s family, Army leaders, project partners and others with direct ties to the Berlin Airlift all gathered for a dedication ceremony that honored his legacy and formally dedicated the recently completed air traffic control tower on the Clay Kaserne portion of U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden in his name.

“Halvorson’s actions during the Berlin Airlift became a symbol of

humanity and hope for millions around the world,” said Air Traffic Controller Dirk Schulz. “The airlift not only provided hope, but it also symbolized a positive change in the world and laid the foundation of a friendship between two nations who remain close allies to this day.”

Halvorsen’s daughter, Denise Williams, spoke at the ceremony about how touching it was to have the air traffic control tower named in honor of her father, highlighting how much respect and gratitude he had for air traffic controllers from his flying days.

“He wrote in his memoirs about thew Berlin Airlift days. He said

‘What a feeling on a stormy night, when you’re worn to a frazzle, to have a crew like that put you at ease and guide you to the end of the runway. We pray for those guys,’ Williams said. “My dad always had deep respect for those often forgotten heroes in ATC (Air Traffic Control) for their vigilance and assistance in helping him to complete the mission. I heard him speak many times of his respect and gratitude for these great professionals.”

The airfield at Clay Kaserne played a key role in the Berlin Airlift, as one of the main staging points for aircraft to load up supplies and depart for Berlin. The air

traffic control tower being replaced was first built soon after the end of the Berlin Airlift — meaning it’s approaching 75 years old.

The new air traffic control tower will provide new, modern facilities to support the management of air traffic in support of U.S. Army Europe and Africa for years to come.

The construction of the new Halvorsen Tower was managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Europe District in close partnership with the garrison, U.S. Army Europe and Africa, 1st Battalion 214th Aviation Regiment and German construction administration Bauamt partners.

“Army Engineers oversaw the rapid delivery of air infrastructure that helped make the Berlin Airlift a historic success, but it was the grit and determination of the German people in Berlin that made it a success. In all, German crews put in nearly 10 million labor hours delivering that air infrastructure. Truly amazing determination,” Kent said. “With this project and countless all over Germany we are proud to continue that tradition of partnership and friendship with our indispensable German Bauamt partners to deliver facilities contributing to regional security and operational capabilities.”

U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Commander Col. David Mayfield remarked how the tower not only paid homage to Halvorsen and all those involved in the Berlin Airlift, but also how it was a symbol of the continued commitments and relationships that date back to the airlift.

“This tower is a significant addition to our installation as we honor the bravery and the resolute commitment of everyone involved, and their sacrifice, during the Berlin Airlift 75 years ago, Mayfield said. “This steadfast commitment to our allies, our partners and our friends continues to resonate through U.S. forces throughout Europe.”

USAFE honors D-Day veterans with commemorative flights in France

U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force members take a photo with World War II veteran Mr. Ceo Bauer, Former 377th Infantry Regiment rifleman, at the end of a D-Day 80 commemorative flight at Cherbourg-Maupertus Airport, France, June 7. The commemoration of D-Day honors not only the bravery of American service members, but also the contributions and sacrifices of our Allied nations, including the heroism of French resistance fighters.

Two World War II veterans flew on commemorative flights in honor of the 80th anniversary of D-Day at Cherbourg-Maupertus, France, June 7.

The flights were coordinated by Captain Christian Maude, 37th Airlift Squadron mission commander, who worked with United States Air Forces in Europe and other participating squadrons to make it happen.

Maude said he saw the anniversary as a unique opportunity to pay homage to the veterans bravery and to express gratitude for the sacrifices made by the men and women in Normandy 80 years ago.

The two veterans, Ceo Bauer, former 377th Infantry Regiment rifleman, and Louis Stoel, former member of the 45th Infantry Division, had the opportunity to fly with members of the 37th Airlift squadron out of Ramstein Air Base, with support from the 81st Airlift Squadron out of Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas.

Stoel’s neighbor and granddaughter accompanied him on the commemorative flight, making it an unforgettable experience. He joined the U.S. Army in 1943, and volunteered to become a ranger, he then made his way

to Italy and France during the course of WWII.

“Coming back to France 80 years later is out of this world,”

Stoel added. “I want to thank the aircrew for flying us around the country today and having the opportunity to meet with such a great group of people.”

Much like Stoel, Bauer’s experience was one to remember.

Bauer was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943 as well, he was there on the beaches during D-Day in 1944. 80 years later, he was accompanied by family and friends as he flew over Normandy for the first time since he served.

“It has been an honor to fly in a C-130 for the first time with my companions,” Bauer said. “I couldn’t see Normandy when I flew over the first time, I appreciate the opportunity and I thank the crew.”

Having the opportunity to fly was unique not only for the aircrew, but also the veterans themselves.

“We have the ability to do a big thing for veterans to show that we care for them and remember the sacrifices the men and women made 80 years ago,” said Maude.

“It’s an opportunity to show the greatest generation what they built and how we can operate and execute based on that today.”

The commemorative flights were part of a larger series of

events honoring the 80th anniversary of D-Day. The event included flyovers, commemorative ceremonies and opportunities for the veterans to interact with current military personnel and locals, bridging the gap between generations and ensuring that the legacy of D-Day continues to inspire.

“I am honored to have been a part of liberating France in the name of the allied nations,” said Bauer. “Vive la France, and long live America.”

U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz’s Headquarters and Headquarters Company bid farewell to Capt. Gabriela Montanez and welcomed the new commander, Capt. Rudolph “Trey” Smith III, in a change of command ceremony at the Armstrong’s Club, June 13.

Col. Reid Furman, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz commander, presided over the ceremony and provided remarks.

“It has been my privilege to work with Capt. Montanez over the past two years,” Furman said. “She has dedicated herself to building her team and supporting the garrison.”

Furman then introduced Smith as the new HHC commander.

“Today, we welcome our new HHC commander,” he said. “Capt. Smith, your combined Civilian and military experiences have prepared you to lead our HHC Soldiers starting today. When you took the gui-

don, you also gained my trust.”

Montanez, who served as USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s HHC commander since May 2022 and will move to Fort Sam Houston, Texas, to be an instructor at the Medical Center of Excellence for her next assignment, shared that her most impactful experience in this garrison has been realizing the burden of responsibilities her Soldiers carry.

“Many people don’t fully understand the tasks, responsibilities, and schedules that come with being a garrison Soldier,” she said. “I can attest that my Soldiers are working days, nights, weekends, holidays, and even on some off days to complete missions in support of USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s priorities.”

She highlighted how Soldiers’ sacrifices make a difference in the community every day, and expressed how grateful she is for the time and dedication they pour into the organization.

“Two years ago, when I took command, I promised to be the Commander you [HHC] deserved,”

said Montanez. “I hope that leaving the seat, I have lived up to my promise. As in any Command, we faced periods of transition, hardship, and operational chaos but despite it all, I know we have all grown from our time together.”

Montanez concluded her remarks with a message for her Soldiers.

“From the moment I took this command and forever more, know that you will always have this officer in your corner, rooting for you, caring about you, and wishing for your success.”

Smith expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead HHC.

“I am thankful for my previous teams and leaders who have supported me and always expressed confidence in me,” Smith said. “I feel truly blessed to have been chosen as the next HHC commander.”

Smith enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2017 and completed Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He then attended Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia, where he com-

The festival was held for the first time in 1968 and is one of the three major folk festivals. Thematically, it is closely linked to the person of Johannes Gutenberg and the external representation of Mainz as a city of literature and printing and is always held at summer solstice.

A magical festival under the slogan „art, handcraft, enjoyment, activities, games and encounters“ invites visitors to discover the town of Zell. There will be large tables on the main street where visitors can sit and meet the townfolk. On Sunday over 50 vendors will offer their goods, such as paintings, wooden deco items, illustrations, leather goods, wooden houshold goods, ceramics, jewelry and textiles. There will also be food and drinks galore on offer, such as Zellertal secco, ice-cream, flammkuchen, spices, oils, olive oil, wooden oven bread and nuts. Guests will have a chance to go into some of the winery courtyards for a snack or sip of wine with music.

Celebrate Men’s Health Month with annual health screening

Public Health

June 2024 is Men’s Health Month, and Defense Health Agency Public Health officials are reminding males of the importance of taking charge of their health for a longer, happier lifestyle.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 13.8 percent of males aged 18 and over are in poor or fair health. Other statistics show that men die an average of five years earlier than women and are at higher risk for serious diseases such as lung cancer, heart disease, and HIV.

And according to a 2022 Health of the Force, published by

Defense Centers for Public Health - Aberdeen, in a survey of 477,000 soldiers, 77 percent were younger than 35 years old.

“Young service members can easily take their health for granted because of their youthfulness,” said Dr. Raul Mirza, a physician at DHAPH. “Yet, it is important to have a regular medical check-up because many diseases and chronic conditions are preventable if they are caught early.”

This prevention-first attitude is a staple of public health thinking — especially in the Department of Defense population.

“Prevention is the best way to health,” said U.S. Public Health Service Rear Adm. Brandon Taylor,

DHA-PH director. “Rather than treating individuals when they are ill, public health aims to prevent our DOD community from getting sick in the first place.”

Public health officials say that one of the best ways to prevent illness is by taking the time for a routine physical. Routine medical check-ups can detect health issues and allow them to be treated before they become a more serious health issue.

“For men, in particular, regular health screenings can detect high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, colon cancer, prostate cancer and/or lung cancer, and allow these conditions to be treated early to produce the best outcomes for health,” said Mirza.

For soldiers who smoke, it is also important to receive regular medical assessments.

Data reported in the 2022 Health of the Force report demonstrated that 27 percent of soldiers reported using tobacco products.

“We know that tobacco use can lead to other complications, like heart disease, lung cancer, and delayed wound healing,” said Corey Fitzgerald, who works in the Health Promotion and Wellness Directorate at the Defense Centers for Public Health–Aberdeen.

Public health officials say that your primary care physician can suggest some alternatives and techniques to quit smoking, like YouCanQuit2, the DOD educational

campaign to help service members quit tobacco — for themselves and their loved ones — to lead to a healthier life.

In June, in particular, public health officials are encouraging men to visit their doctor and have a full check-up. Those who cannot make it to the doctor’s office in June are encouraged to go at their earliest convenience.

“We celebrate Men’s Health Month once a year, but it’s always the right time to take care of you,” said Mirza.

For more information on men’s health, visit CDC.gov, Health.gov, Health.mil, or the Navy’s Men’s Health resource page.

ABC IN KMC: Johannisnacht

Johannisnacht, also known as St. John’s Eve, is a festive celebration associated with summer solstice and has had key significance throughout history. The precise moment of the solstice in our area was June 20, at 10:50 p.m. Central European Summer Time. This is the time at which the sun reaches its maximum declination marked by the longest day of the year. Yesterday the sun rose at 4:43 a.m. and set at 9:33 p.m., providing a sunlight duration of 16 hours and 50 minutes. In other words, summer is here!

The Roman calendar marked June 24 as the summer solstice and was celebrated during the Vestalia festival. It honored Vesta, the goddess of the hearth. Rituals included married women entering the temple of Vesta to leave offerings in exchange for blessings for their families.

In Ireland, St. John’s Eve, also known as Midsummer, has deep Celtic roots. On this magical night, great bonfires are lit, and fairs and festivals are held. The sacred Celtic fire was ceremoniously kindled, and people watched for the first flash from Howth’s western promontory (near today’s Dublin). As the signal spread, local fires blazed, encircling Ireland in a ring of flame. The Goddess Áine was also honored during this time, as she ruled as a fairy queen and banshee, associated with prosperity and abundance. People carried burning hay or straw torches to ensure fertility for the year ahead.

Stonehenge in England was meticulously designed to align with the sun’s movement. During the summer solstice, the sun rises just to the left of the outlying Heel Stone in the north-east part of the horizon. Standing in the middle of the monument on a midsummer’s day, the sun’s first rays shine directly into the heart of Stonehenge, where visitors can witness the sensational occurrence.

Sankthansaften owes a debt to Viking and pagan traditions. It celebrates the summer solstice and the return of light. The Vikings revered the summer solstice as the peak of summer, marked by long days and flourish-

ing crops. They held large feasts and made offerings to honor the gods and seek prosperity. The tradition lives on in Scandinavia, where people celebrate Sankthansaften and Midsummer is celebrated with gusto. Sweden, in particular, has vibrant fests, where people dance around a pole called Midommarstang decorated with greenery, gather for festive meals with friends and bonfires, and women and girls adorn their heads with colorful summer flowers. Overall, the season is a time to revel in the warmth of summer, connect with nature, and celebrate community and tradition.

In Denmark, St. John’s Eve is called Mittsommernacht or Sankt-Hans-Nacht. People light fires to honor the sun and nature. Dancing, singing, and flower and herb gathering are essential traditions. Dishes, such as Smørrebrød (open-faced sandwiches) and Frikadeller (Danish meatballs) are enjoyed, along with aquavit or beer. Families gather in summer houses to celebrate together. Midsummer festivals are also popular in the Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and

Finland with their long, white nights.

Johannisnacht celebrations are more common in Germany’s northern states, and some festivities take place in communities close to Denmark. Smaller towns celebrate festivals with bonfires and gatherings.

The Viking city of Haithabu was a major trading hub, located near Schleswig in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, and now houses an indoor and outdoor Viking Museum. The area has ancient megalithic graves and significant archaeological finds, also linked with solstices. Special workshops will be taking place on the weekend, such as archery training, making coins and craftsmen demonstrating ancient handcraft skills.

One somewhat different event worth mentioning in southern Germany is the Midsommar music and arts festival in the middle of nowhere in Hub/Unterreit near Munich. It takes place from June 21 to 23 and offers mainly techno beats, yoga, fire shows and a silent disco starting at 2:00 a.m.

Some Native American tribes also celebrated customs linked to the summer solstice. For example,

the Sioux Sundance where young warriors engaged in singing, dancing, drumming, deep prayer, meditation, and skin piercing. Medicine wheels were stone wheels constructed with 28 spokes as a tribute to the summer solstice and aligned with sunrise and sunset during the season. A further example is Fajada Butte (Chaco Canyon, New Mexico), which is home to a solar marking site that records solstices and equinoxes (around March 20 and Sep. 23).

In our region, RheinlandPfalz’s capital Mainz, which has a vibrant Roman history, initiated a Johannisnacht Festival to celebrate the longest day of the year similar to the Romans. It also commemorates Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of movable type printing. The festival takes place annually and is held from June 21 to 24 this year with events along the Rhein River and city center.

Kaiserslautern is hosting the “long night of culture” on June 22, with activities starting at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday and some lasting until sunrise the next morning. Over 100 events will take place throughout the city, and the Japanese Garden will offer spe-

cial illumination with Japanese lanterns, highlighting the ponds and waterfall, and accompanied by gentle music.

Other, not quite so traditional, events are also taking place in the area, such as the Medieval Market at Lichtenberg Castle, a castle tour in Landstuhl and the legendary lawn tractor races in Sembach.

Sunset times June 21

• Kaiserslautern: Sunset at 9:31 p.m. local time.

• North Cape, Norway: Experiences the midnight sun, with the sun setting and rising again within minutes.

• Anchorage, Alaska: Sunset at 11:42 p.m., sunrise at 4:21 a.m. local time..

• Arctic Circle: Continuous daylight during this period, while the Antarctic Circle experiences complete darkness for about 11 weeks.

Whether you engage in cultural events, dive into the Middle Ages, choose to party at a festival, spend an evening barbecuing with friends or just chill on your balcony, enjoy the longest days of the year and embrace the summer with further exciting events coming soon!

River Elbe up to the Danish border. With more than 250 species of plants and animals inhabiting the largest unbroken system of intertidal sand and mud flats in the world, this incredibly diverse place makes for an excellent trip year-round. Here are three tips for making your visit a memorable one.

Don’t miss the Dithmarschen

The Dithmarschen is a region with huge expanses of mud flats and salt marshes, and the place is pure seaside. Wind in your hair, the sound of birds crying. On sunny days, it feels like the world stretches forever. Rainy days make you grateful for good coats and warm restaurants when all is said and done. And as a bonus: the place is absolutely teeming with things to do.

First things first: be on the lookout for wildlife. As you walk dikes and wooden paths through salt marshes, you can’t miss the birds, which include geese, ducks and sometimes the rare European sea eagle. It’s not just winged things, either. In the waters around the Dithmarschen, you can find harbor seals, woodpecker seals, and loads of fish — including sturgeon.

One of the coolest national park visitor centers in Germany can also be found next to the Dithmarschen. Known as the NABU National Park House Wattwurm, the center doesn’t disappoint: the curving building looks a lot like a lugworm! It offers an

amazing perspective on the park, and is well worth a visit. As a bonus, wild ponies roam the grounds outside the visitor center.

Be on island time

During the summer months, especially, Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park has much to offer. Like islands –seven of them, to be exact! While all of the islands have something to offer visitors (and make sure not to confuse Helgoland, with its excellent red cliffs, with Legoland, just a bit further up the road in Denmark), two in particular are worth your time.

Amrum is the first. And it is extraordinary. A narrow little 10 by 1.5 kilometer stretch of land, it offers staggering beauty at every turn – white sand, windswept dunes

and wild grass. Hedgehogs love the place. And in the right season, you’ll feel as if you’re standing on the last patch of ground in the world. It’s savage, and it’s beautiful.

Sylt is another great island to visit, mostly because there’s so much to do, and because it’s a bit of a polar opposite compared to Amrum. Sylt is where you come when you want to have a good time. It’s got tourist beaches, resorts, restaurants, cycling –the works. During the summer, it’s almost impossible to find a place to stay (so plan ahead).

Cross the border into Denmark

If you’re making the trip to Germany’s northernmost point, why not add a Scandinavian country to your itinerary? One

of the best places to visit is Rømø, a duneladen island that has one of the widest beaches (more than 2 kilometers in some places, which is just massive for a beach) in Northern Europe.

Rømø’s dunes are special, too, because they don’t stop growing – inching west every year, thanks to the wind and the water. And, if you’ve got kids, then you actually could do both Helgoland and Legoland, which is just a little less than two hours up the road from the northern end of the national park.

Getting to Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park By car, the park is approximately 6.5 hours from Kaiserslautern, 6 hours from Wiesbaden, and 7.5 hours from Stuttgart.
