ENERGY TIP OF THE WEEK

How to efficiently use your German rolladen/shutters and lower your home temperature:

» Before leaving for work or running errands, open all the windows and shutters to allow cool air to enter and hot air to leave. Normally, between 4 – 8 a.m. we have the coolest morning hours.

» Remember, hot air rises, open your top-level windows.

» Just before leaving, close all shutters, especially windows that are getting direct sunlight. This process can create your own personal A/C without increasing energy consumption.

Ramstein opens new vehicle registration substation, implements

The 86th Mission Support Group and the 569th United States Forces Police Squadron opened a new vehicle registration substation August 15 at Ramstein Air Base on the second floor of the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center Mall.

The Ramstein substation is the first response to the increased demand for vehicle registration services following the closing of the Sembach Vehicle Registration Office.

According to 86th Mission Support Group leadership, the new substation will help alleviate some of the immediate challenges and frustrations experienced by the Kaiserslautern Military Community.

“We understand the frustrations over the vehicle registration process and want to reassure the KMC that your voices are being heard,” said U.S. Air Force Col. James A. Cunningham, 86th MSG commander. “We are working with the vehicle registration leadership teams and have multiple efforts in the works to improve this process.”

What services will be provided at the substation?

Customers will be able to complete vehicle renewals, de-registrations and changes of personal information at the Ramstein sub-

station on a first-come, first-serve basis, without needing to queue in. Customers in need of any other services will be referred to the Kapaun Vehicle Registration Office.

Additional services may be offered at the Ramstein substation in the future as the 86th MSG leadership team continues to evaluate additional processes to effectively and efficiently serve the KMC, Cunningham added.

Significant updates on the Kapaun Vehicle Registration Office: For KMC members requiring services from the Kapaun Vehicle

Registration Office, the virtual queue system will remain in effect for now while 86th MSG leadership evaluates alternative solutions, Cunningham added.

However, there is no longer a limit to the number of individuals that can enter the queue, as the virtual system is continuously rolling appointments over to eliminate any issues with entering or staying in the queue.

Additionally, the “Friday for First Timers and Finals” program has been discontinued to support the continuous roll-over of queued appointments at the Kapaun Vehicle Registration Office.

How you can help:

The 86th MSG leadership team continues to request patience and understanding while Team Ramstein navigates the ever growing vehicle registration process.

KMC members are encouraged to utilize the interactive PDF guide to confirm the correct documentation for your upcoming appointments, and ensure vehicle registration personnel are able to provide customers with as efficient service as possible. You may also watch a tutorial video on accessing and navigating the guide at https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=PWRDwMMVtxc

Unlocking leadership from USAG RP: Lessons from Army Civilian Education System

You are a developmental supervisor. Your department is having a difficult time controlling the use of cell phones for personal use during the workday. As a supervisor, how do you handle this situation with tact and professionalism?

Army civilian professionals from U.S. Army installations in Germany and Italy attending the Civilian Education System Intermediate Course, (Team RETHEM, as my team called each other) were recently prompted with this question.

The atmosphere within the classroom walls of Installation Management Command’s Europe headquarters building morphed from quiet to frenetic as each of us explained our answers, describing what we would do as supervisors in that situation. Animated and passionate con -

versations flowed freely between us.

Hearing “Great point, I didn’t even think of that because we’ve always done it this way,” was a revelation to me. It was at that moment I realized the profound impact of the Army’s Civilian Education System.

I recently finished the CES Intermediate Course, Phase II on Clay Kaserne in Wiesbaden, Germany. Lead by Army Management Staff College, four knowledgeable and engaging instructors met with 36 Army civilian professionals and truly delivered a “premier leader development experience.”

The intermediate course I attended provides Army civilian leaders educational opportunities throughout their careers. The course blends distance and instructor-facilitated learning, which is broken up in two phases.

During the 15-day residen -

tial cohort phase II, we delved into group discussions on topics such as “What attributes should an Army leader possess to create a positive environment?” and “What actions should be taken to improve team-building skills?”

As the days progressed, the classroom’s white walls became adorned with colorful poster boards displaying our collective thoughts on various Army leadership topics.

CES prides itself on being an interactive classroom experience that emphasizes student participation over PowerPoint presentations. One of the most valuable lessons for me was the focus on self-awareness within the scope of Army leadership. We took many self-assessment tests, but the most beneficial was the Strength Deployment Inventory, which explores human motives and strengths.

Engaging in discussions and

lessons with people who have different personality traits and motives mirrored the real workforce, where blended personalities come together to accomplish the mission.

For U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz, where I have been serving as a Public Affairs Specialist for two years now, that mission is “To serve, support, and secure the total force community, enabling power projection for the European Theater.”

Each day, I found myself more comfortable with the 16 other Army professionals who, day by day, also grew into relaxed versions of themselves as we gave individual and group presentations, asked for professional advice, gave feedback and shared work anecdotes from personal experiences.

“The Wiesbaden cohort demonstrated the networking and support that we foster in every

class,” said Tamara Hullender, instructor and team lead for the Army Management Staff College.

“The camaraderie and accountability that this cohort created was truly unique.”

Since completing CES, I have a newfound appreciation for regularly assessing my leadership skills. On the first day of class, my team and I created guidelines and standards to hold ourselves accountable.

The instructors kept us honest, asking how we used these guidelines to hold ourselves accountable. This exercise, along with many others, is something I will carry with me throughout my career.

Team RETHEM, do I earn a ‘smiley Post-it’ for my transparency?

Living Pattern Survey Town Hall

The Living Pattern Survey is more than just a routine data collection exercise — it’s a critical tool that directly impacts the financial well-being of service members stationed overseas. The LPS seeks to understand where Service members and their families shop and how they divide their purchases among local markets, U.S. Government facilities, and online stores. The insights gained from this triennial survey influence adjustments to the Overseas Cost of Living Allowance, which can significantly affect the disposable income of service members.

What is the survey and what does it address?

The Living Pattern Survey is required once every three years to determine where service members shop and how they allocate their purchases between local markets, U.S. Government, and online shopping facilities. The survey is fully automated and can be completed on any personal computer.

Who is allowed to take the survey?

The survey should be completed by service members with the assistance of all shoppers in the household. It asks service members and their families to identify the local market outlets where they usually shop

and how they allocate their purchases between different sources of supply. Participation in the LPS should be limited to service members who have been at the duty station for three months or longer.

Where and when can members take the survey?

The survey will be available on the Defense Travel Management Office website September 1-30 at the following link: https://www.defensetravel.dod.mil/Community/ se/251137451FAA2705. This survey can be completed in approximately 30 to 45 minutes.

What is the impact of taking the survey? How does it benefit the KMC?

The LPS is used to identify primary and secondary outlets where service members do most of their shopping. Based on the results of the LPS, the Retail Price Schedule is priced according to typical family shopping of the average service member. The LPS can also lead to changes to OCOLA indexes which can increase or reduce OCOLA rates year-to-year.

Can OSD provide expectations with regards to the timeline of the results of this survey?

The Allowances Division strives to have results of the surveys available within 90 days, but several factors can delay results.

is utilized for the calculation since LPS figures only include offbase stores and prices?

Regarding on-base prices, Defense Commissary Agency and the Army and Air Force Exchange Services directly provide the OSD Allowances Division pricing of the same market basket items every quarter for all their overseas locations. The Allowances Division then uses that on-base cost data and the off-base cost, LPS data, that is obtained from each installation in the analysis to establish the price used.

The LPS is a triennial survey that impacts the financial wellbeing of service members stationed overseas, so it’s important for them to provide input. It is an essential tool that significantly impacts the financial landscape for service members stationed overseas. By capturing detailed insights into where and how service members and their families shop, the survey directly influences adjustments to OCOLA, which in turn affects their overall financial stability. The results of the LPS, along with other related surveys, ensure that OCOLA rates are accurately tailored to reflect the actual expenses faced by service members. Ultimately, the LPS and related surveys are critical in ensuring that service members receive fair compensation that reflects their true cost of living, making participation in these surveys a valuable contribution to the entire military community.

US Army Dental Assistant (68E) takes part in Burundi Medical Readiness Exercise

U.S. Army Cpl. Deja Gomez-Lewis, a (68E) dental assistant assigned to Dental Health Activity Italy deployed to Africa recently and took part in a Medical Readiness Exercise at the Kamenge Military Hospital in Bujumbura, Burundi.

The MEDREX, planned and organized by the Southern European Task Force in Italy, took place July 10 to Aug. 4, and consisted of approximately 20 U.S. Army medical and dental personnel primarily from 30th Medical Brigade headquartered at Sembach Kaserne.

A native of Vancouver, Washington, Gomez-Lewis has been in the U.S. Army for almost five years. The Burundi MEDREX was her first deployment since joining the Army.

“The MEDREX in Burundi was extremely informative and it helped me become more aware on what goes on outside the dental clinic setting,” said Gomez-Lewis. “Until now, I have never been in an austere field environment operating with limited equipment and supplies. It was a pleasure to work with so many soldiers and doctors who have deployed experience.”

According to Army officials, the Burundi MEDREX allowed U.S. Army medical personnel the opportunity to treat patients in an austere environment and exposed them to complex medical cases not routinely seen in a garrison environment.

“During the MEDREX, I learned that there are many ways to treat mouth traumas,” added Gomez-Lewis. “For example, we got to see and treat two patients that experienced facial trauma and a broken maxilla (upper jaw). In both cases, our attending oral surgeon was able to successfully reposition and brace the teeth into the correct position. It gave me great pride knowing that we were able to help the patients and provide them relief.”

MEDREX events like this allow U.S. military medical forces to build lasting relations, cooperation, and mutual support with other countries.

“While some of the Burundian citizens appeared a little skeptical at first, they soon came to realize that we were just there to help them out,” Gomez-Lewis added. “I think MEDREX events like this are important because it gives the Army a chance to create new and long-lasting relationships with other countries. I’m extremely grateful for having had the opportunity to take part in this MEDREX and I look forward to being able to take part in others.”

Medical Readiness Exercises like the one conducted in Burundi, enable military health professionals from the U.S. and their African partners to exchange medical practices, procedures and techniques that enhance treatment capabilities and result in lasting relationships between the participants.

Army’s newest garrison: USAG Black Sea

On Aug. 8, the United States Army Garrison Black Sea marked its official uncasing of colors and change of command ceremony. The U.S. Army formally redesignated the Army Support Activity-Black Sea to USAG Black Sea, effective June 15. This development establishes USAG Black Sea as the ninth Army garrison in Europe and the 81st globally, further strengthening the U.S. Army’s presence in the Black Sea region.

Located at Mihail Kogalniceanu Airbase in Romania and Novo Selo Training Area in Bulgaria, USAG Black Sea is tasked with managing a total of five sites across both countries.

These include Babadag Training Area in Romania, as well as Aytos and Chubra Training Areas in Bulgaria.

This move comes after USAG Black Sea realigned to report to USAG Poland as its higher headquarters, with V Corps serving as the Senior Responsible Officer.

This realignment ensures that the Army’s operations on NATO’s Eastern flank are fully integrated and coordinated.

“USAG Black Sea will support V Corps, and all U.S. Army forces in the region, enhancing our command-andcontrol capabilities and ensuring our forces are ready to meet any challenges in the European theater,” said Lt. Col. Christopher Kuszniaj, USAG Black Sea garrison commander, highlighting the strategic importance of this move.

“What’s most important for everyone to understand is that fundamentally, we will continue to deliver those worldclass services that we have been over the years. Our mission is to make sure that the soldiers coming to Romania and Bulgaria have everything available to them to have mission success and that their quality of life remains as high as possible while they’re here. I’m excited to work side-by-side with our host nation partners to accomplish that mission and, of course, to see more of their beautiful countries while I’m here,” said Kuszniaj as he emphasized the significance of the transition for the garrison at both the command level and for the organization as it moves into a full garrison designation.

The redesignation underscores the Army’s commitment to strengthening its infrastructure and operational capabilities in Eastern Europe.

The garrison’s mission is to deliver and integrate flexible base support to enable the readiness of permanent, rotational, allied, and expeditionary forces in Romania and Bulgaria.

USAG Black Sea aims to serve, support, and secure the total force community, thereby enabling power projection for the European Theater.

Mr. Scott Delay, deputy to the garrison commander, noted that the transition to a USAG will be seamless for soldiers stationed at these installations. “What it means in the long run is that we will be able to improve our infrastructure and deliver more robust services to the U.S. Army warfighter as we receive more resources and grow and mature as a garrison,” said Delay.

USAG Black Sea’s vision is to build a trusted team of Army professionals dedicated to supporting mission partners and communities. The garrison is committed to delivering world-class services and enabling readiness to meet emerging requirements.

Modern, resilient, and sustainable installations are at the core of this vision, enhancing strategic readiness while providing quality facilities, services, and support to soldiers, their families, Army civilians, and soldiers for life.

Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Gutierrez, discussed the balance between mission objectives and building strong relationships with host nations. “In the realm of military operations, the subtle balance between supporting rotational forces and fostering positive relationships with Host Nation Partners is a critical aspect of mission success,” said Gutierrez. “By maintaining open lines of communication between the rotational forces, garrison personnel, and host nation representatives, we can ensure that everyone is on the same page regarding mission objectives and community engagement efforts.”

The establishment of USAG Black Sea aligns with Installation Management Command’s lines of effort, which include people, infrastructure, protection services, and operationalizing the Black Sea.

These LOEs are essential to the mission, ensuring that the garrison can support the diverse needs of its community and mission partners.

As USAG Black Sea begins its journey, it does so with a clear mission and vision supported by a robust framework of strategic goals.

This new garrison is poised to play a critical role in the U.S. Army’s operations in Eastern Europe, ensuring that the forces stationed there are wellsupported and ready to meet any challenges that arise.

The U.S. Army’s continued investment in the Black Sea region reflects its commitment to maintaining a strong, ready, and resilient presence on NATO’s Eastern flank.

With the establishment of USAG Black Sea, the Army is well-positioned to support its mission partners and enhance the readiness of its forces in the region.

2024 National Military Youth of the Year honored at celebration

Each year, the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, in partnership with the Department of Defense, selects a member from the military youth center community as the National Military Youth of the Year.

The program was created in 2013 to celebrate military-connected teens who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and service skills, as well as a strong dedica-

tion to academic excellence. Out of the many teens who participate in local, state and regional competitions, five are selected as finalists.

On Aug. 8, the 2024 National Military Youth of the Year was announced as Taylor R., a rising high school senior and an active member of the Naval Support Activity Bahrain Youth Center. Over the course of six years, Taylor has become an integral part of his Boys and Girls Club affiliated youth center, aiding with coaching their football, basketball, and soccer

leagues, as well as reviving their Keystone Club and serving in the Teen Employment Program. Taylor has also achieved a 4.15 GPA with over 215 community service hours in the past 12 months.

Taylor credits his Boys and Girls Club affiliated youth center as a big part of his development as a leader.

“From first to eleventh grade I have spent time with caring staff that prepared me to become the confident, forward-thinking leader that I am today. From a very young age, I learned the impor-

tance of hard work, respect, setting an example for others and leading my peers,” he stated.

He also points to his various experiences in Boys and Girls Club affiliated youth centers as a child when discussing his open perspective of all people. “I believe that recognizing and celebrating our differences empowers us to reach our full potential as individuals and as a generation,” said Taylor.

During the state and regional levels of the Military Youth of the Year program, Taylor was awarded

$22,500 in college scholarships. At the National Military Youth of the Year celebration in Washington, D.C., Taylor was awarded an additional $20,000 scholarship, bringing his total scholarship amount to $42,500. After high school graduation, he plans to attend Brigham Young University-Idaho, where he will study engineering, music and education.

US Army Nurse earns professional ethics award for behavioral health work

The United States Military Academy’s William Simon Center for Professional Military Ethics Award was recently bestowed upon U.S. Army Lt. Col. Marlene AriasReynoso, an Army psychiatric nurse practitioner who currently commands the U.S. Army Health Clinic in Ansbach.

The Professional Military Ethics Award was presented to AriasReynoso for a Ted-Talk style video she produced while attending the U.S. Army War College. The video titled, “Getting Left of the Boom,” focuses on transforming suicide prevention in the military by leveraging leadership, especially at the squad and platoon level.

According to the William Simon Center for Professional Military Ethics officials, the ethics award is presented to students for their excellence in research, strategic thought, and communication on national security issues.

“During my time at the Army War College, my primary objective was to share my insights as a behavioral health provider,” said Arias-Reynoso. “I also wanted to bring attention to a topic I am deeply passionate about. I am dedicated to leveraging every platform to enhance behavioral health readiness and ensure that leaders are fully engaged in supporting their teams.”

According to a recent report released by the Department of Defense, suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the U.S. military. The report also indicates rising suicide rates among service members and veterans over the past decade have raised public and professional concerns.

“As a healthcare provider, I came to the realization that the best thing I can do to save lives is engage with leaders,” added AriasReynoso. “Ensuring the health and welfare of their Soldiers is a priority for all Army leaders, however, it is leaders at the squad and platoon level who interact with their Soldiers every day.”

According to senior Department of Defense officials, suicide prevention is a long-term effort and the men and women who step up to serve the country in uniform are DOD’s most important asset.

“Junior leaders are the linchpin of Soldier well-being,” added Arias-Reynoso. “To effectively prevent suicides, they must prioritize open and honest communication, fostering a climate of trust where Soldiers feel comfortable seeking help. Recognizing the signs of dis-

tress, such as changes in behavior, performance, or mood, is crucial.”

Senior U.S. military officials indicate that behavioral health impacts both Soldier and unit readiness.

“Strong mental and emotional health is essential for Soldiers to perform their duties effectively,” said Arias-Reynoso. “Resilient soldiers make better decisions, adapt more quickly to challenges, and contribute more fully to their units. On the other hand, untreated mental health issues can negatively impact morale, judgment, and overall performance. These issues can also increase the risk of accidents, injuries, and even suicide, undermining unit cohesion and combat readiness.”

What can Army leaders do to ensure the behavioral health and resiliency of their Soldiers?

“Empowering everyone to be a part of the solution is essential,” Arias-Reynoso added. “You don’t have to be a mental health professional to make a difference. Suicide prevention is a collective effort requiring the involvement of Soldiers, leaders, families, and support staff. By investing in prevention programs and fostering a culture of open communication, we can not only save lives but also cultivate a more resilient and effective military force.”

The United States Military Academy's William Simon Center for Professional Military Ethics Award was recently bestowed upon U.S. Army Lt. Col. Marlene Arias-Reynoso, an Army psychiatric nurse practitioner who currently commands the U.S. Army Health Clinic in Ansbach. The Professional Military Ethics Award was presented to Arias-Reynoso for a Ted-Talk style video she produced while attending the U.S. Army War College. The video titled, “Getting Left of the Boom,” focuses on transforming suicide prevention in the military by leveraging leadership, especially at the squad and platoon level.

Army officer overcomes injury to lead team to victory at Armed Forces Rugby Tournament

A U.S. Army Chemical Corps officer overcame a calf injury to lead the Army team to victory during the Armed Forces Rugby Tournament in San Diego.

1st Lt. Rachel D. Henley, the 3rd Platoon leader for the 92nd Chemical Company (Hazard Response), was the team captain for the U.S. Army rugby team that took the gold medal by beating the Air Force team 27-5 during the recent competition.

Henley had to make a quick recovery to participate in the tournament.

“I tore my calf while attending the U.S. Armed Forces camp in May and unfortunately was unable to compete in the Netherlands,” said Henley. “With a setback physically, I knew my mentality leading up to the AllArmy camp and tournament needed to be strong. With only four weeks of expedited physical therapy, I was picked as captain of the team. I knew even though I wasn’t at 100 percent, I could give 100 percent to being the best leader I could be.”

The Army team was 4-0 going into the championship game against Air Force, after defeating the Marine Corps team 20-12, Air Force team 29-7, Coast Guard team 33-5 and Navy team 20-14.

Henley said the highlight of the tournament was the championship game where her team built on its “brick by brick” motto.

“We started with a strong foundation and build up, each contributing our strengths

and our ‘why’ into the brick wall. We did that throughout the camp and continued into the tournament becoming better and better each game,” said Henley. “After each game, our coach always asked if we were satisfied. We all knew that we could play better, and we were hungry to play amazing rugby. We were never satisfied until our last game winning 27-5 against the Air Force.”

At the All-Army team camp at the Chula Vista Olympic Training Center in the San Diego area, Henley and her teammates were able to meet the USA Women’s Olympic Team before they headed to Paris. The USA Women’s Olympic Team won the Bronze Medal during the 2024 Paris Olympics, earning their first ever Olympic medal in history.

Henley, who serves as a centre on the All-Army team, became interested in rugby because her father, retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Brian Henley, played rugby at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

During his Air Force career, her father flew the C-141 Starlifter strategic airlifter, T-1 Jayhawk training jet and KC-10 Extender refueler and cargo aircraft. He also served in Operation Southern Watch, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

Henley played soccer for many years before she realized that rugby was a better sport for her.

“I played soccer my whole life and played college ball in Oregon my freshman year. Through many yellow cards, I realized I was a bit too aggressive for soccer,” said Henley.

“My sophomore year in 2019, I began ROTC

and rugby at the University of Nevada, Reno, and fell in love.”

Henley was commissioned after graduating from the University of Nevada, Reno, with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.

She reported to the 92nd Chemical Company in April 2023 where she has led her platoon through numerous training and operational challenges.

Henley has also found time to continue to prove her mettle on the rugby pitch.

“I have been chosen for the All-Army Team for three years and the Armed Forces Team once,” said Henley, who grew up in a military family but considers Reno, Nevada, home.

Henley has also played rugby for the Savannah Shamrocks and Carolina Geographic Rugby Union since moving to Fort Stewart, Georgia, where the 92nd Chemical Company is stationed.

The 92nd Chemical Company “Rock Steady” is part of the 83rd Chemical Battalion, 48th Chemical Brigade and 20th Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosives Command, the U.S. military’s premier CBRNE formation.

From 19 bases in 16 states, Soldiers and U.S. Army civilians from the 20th CBRNE Command confront and defeat the world’s most dangerous hazards in support of joint, interagency and multinational operations.

Henley said that overcoming her calf injury taught her to enjoy the opportunities she has to compete and succeed at rugby.

“What it takes, for me, to be a successful rugby player, the best teammate I can be, and team captain, is continuing to respect and love the game I’m playing and my teammates around me,” said Henley. “My quote when I head on the field is to ‘Find the Joy.’ I play my best when I am truly enjoying myself. Having this injury has made me realize how short my time playing rugby really is and how quickly it can be taken away. Win or lose, I will always find the joy playing the sport I love, as a teammate or captain.”

Henley said the trust, toughness and teamwork needed to win on the rugby pitch are similar to the attributes needed to succeed on the battlefield.

“Having this outlet has allowed me to be a successful Army leader in many ways. Rugby has taught me so much about myself, teamwork and strength. Being a strong female, physically and mentally, in this line of work allows me to lead from the front and gain respect and trust from my Soldiers,” said Henley.

“Playing specifically for the Army squad has made me even more proud to serve,” said Henley. “The All-Army motto is ‘For Those Who Can’t.’ It creates a greater sense of honor and pride when putting on the rugby jersey, representing our fallen Soldiers.”

ABC IN KMC: BRIGHT BUILDING BRICKS

We are all familiar with the colorful, plastic building bricks that fascinate young children and adults alike. Youngsters love discovering their creativity with simple blocks, adolescents may enjoy constructing complex technical structures, while artists might even make a living out of reconstructing famous buildings of the world.

The story of the colorful bricks begins with the birth of Ole Kirk Christiansen in April 1891 in Omvraa Mark, Denmark. As one of 13 children in a poor farming family, he was fascinated by woodworks and became a carpenter.

In 1932, he established a small business in Billund, Denmark and first produced wooden household items. Inspired by his four children, he shifted his focus to wooden toys, which later became the foundation of LEGO. The name “LEGO” was established in 1934 and is derived from the Danish words “LEg GOdt,” meaning “play well.”

In 1947 Christiansen purchased a plastic injecting-molding machine, which allowed the company to mass produce plastic toys and served as a significant turning point. By 1949, LEGO was producing a simple version of the modern LEGO brick, also known as “automatic binding bricks.”

The iconic interlocking brick design was patented in 1958, shortly before Christiansen’s death in March of the same year. Little would he know that the LEGO company and his ingenious invention would lead to worldwide success and to a revenue of 65.9 billion Danish Crowns (about 9.65 billion U.S. dollars) by the year 2023.

Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, son of LEGO’s founder Ole Kirk Christiansen, took over the management of the LEGO Group in 1957. He played a crucial role in the development of the iconic LEGO brick design and the LEGO System in Play, which became the foundation of LEGO’s success.

In 1968 the first LEGO theme park was opened in Billund, Denmark. The park features large-scale LEGO models, rides and attractions along with a hotel in colorful LEGO brick style, even the nearby airport, where visitors can exit and almost stumble into the theme park, was designed in LEGO fashion.

Based on its success, further concepts were created, such as DUPLO in 1969, for younger children with larger bricks for easier handling and safer to play with. LEGO Technic was introduced in 1977 which included gears, axles and motors, allowing for more complex and functional models.

Finally, combining LEGO bricks with programmable robotics, socalled Mindstorm sets, were introduced in 1998 and enabled users to program their own robots. Themed sets such as towns, castles, space, pirates, Star Wars and Harry Potter followed, offering unique building experiences.

LEGO established its first official flower set, the LEGO flower bouquet in 2021, and it quickly became popular among flora fans. It is a part of the LEGO Botanical Collection, which includes a variety of nature-inspired builds such as sunflowers, orchids and a bonsai tree. Astrid Christiansen originally created flowers for her colleagues, but her designs quickly became popular and sparked the flame into introducing a new series with floral elements.

The concept of LEGOLAND parks rapidly gained international interest and further parks were opened in the United States, Japan and one in Germany near Ulm. The main attractions in Günzburg include MINILAND with miniature versions of famous landmarks and cities,

Flying NINJAGO, a Fire Dragon roller coaster and Atlantis, an underwater world filled with sea creatures. Visitors can also experience how the bricks are made and create their own custom brick, or even stay at the Pirate Island Hotel.

Today, LEGO is more than just a toy, it’s a cultural icon. The brand has expanded into movies, video games and even as educational tools. Whether you’re building a simple house, an airplane out of DUPLOs or a complex robot, LEGO bricks offer endless possibilities for creativity and fun.

Some LEGO-tastic fun facts: Since 1958 more than 400 billion LEGO bricks have been produced. The tallest structure built with the interlocking plastic bricks measured 35.05 meters (114 ft 11 in) and was achieved by Lego Italia in Milan, Italy, on June 21, 2015. An estimated 550,000 LEGO bricks were used to complete the tower.

The largest structure in size built out of LEGO bricks was a full-sized replica of an X-Wing Fighter from Star Wars displayed in New York City. Built at a scale of 1:1, it measured 13.1 meters (43 feet) in length, with a wingspan of 13.44 meters (44 feet). Over 5.3 million LEGO bricks were used, weighing around 20 tons.

The Stadthalle in Landstuhl is hosting a large LEGO exhibit Aug. 31 to Sep. 1. The display will present over 80 LEGO master builders from Luxembourg, Switzerland and Germany, including scenes from Star Wars, a zoo landscape, knight’s kingdom, Brandenburger Tor, and a few surprises. Dive into a miniature world, take a trip around the world, or travel into space to experience many wonders of the world in just one afternoon!

WURSTMARKT from Page 1

Pfälzer party of the year

The Wurstmarkt, or Bad Dürkheim Wine Festival as some people refer to it, is one of the largest, most traditional and entertaining wine festivals in Germany. It is over 570 years old, and still as young as ever. It is the festival of festivals — the main celebration of the year in the Pfalz.

It takes place in the middle of the town, outside the famous giant Wine cask (Dürkheimer Riesenfass) — the largest wine barrel in the world, which also houses a restaurant. The festival is reminiscent of a Weihnachtsmarkts, with fairground rides and many food stalls being temporarily installed for the event.

Overflowing wine

You can enjoy over 150 different wines only from the Bad Dürkheim region in over 50 different places throughout the fest — from the mellow Riesling to the finest sweet ice-wine available in the many wine tents.

You can visit one of the many traditional “Schubkärchler,” which are small traditional wine stands with scrubbed wooden tables worn smooth over the years. Or if you prefer to enjoy a fine wine in a more tranquil and intimate atmosphere, the Weindorf — the sophisticated wine village — is the place for you. Bad Dürkheim wine loses none of its flavor wherever you drink it. There is even a beer hall for those who prefer the grain to the grape!

Live Music

Live entertainment is one of the most distinctive features of the festival, and it takes place inside large wine halls, which are similar in atmosphere to the Munich Oktoberfest. Traditional German brass bands will play schlager music (party

music) and popular hits that will have you dancing arm in arm with your neighbors.

Fairground and attractions

While wine and wurst are at the heart of this festival, the Wurstmarkt is also famous for its travelling fairground attractions and numerous stalls that offer fun for the whole family. A huge ferris wheel sits in the center of the festival grounds — when you sit at the top it offers the best views of this incredible event as well as the surrounding vineyards.

Origins of the Festival

In the 12th century, local farmers and wine growers began to gather to sell their produce to the pilgrims heading towards the chapel on

top of a nearby mountain, Michaelsberg. By 1417, the event was known as Michaelismarkt and over the next few centuries, it grew into a three-day fair. It was first called Wurstmarkt in 1832, simply because a large number of sausages were sold during the fair – the name stuck and the market morphed into what it has become today.

St Michael’s Chapel

Enjoy a short walk to the Michaelskapelle (St. Michael’s Chapel), which sits on the Michaelsberg above the market. Up until the 15th century, pilgrims walked up the hill on St. Michael’s Day, and this is the origin of the Wurstmarkt festival.

As local poet Karl Räder once said of this

hugely popular event: “The Wurstmarkt is the only festival where you meet old friends you’ve never seen before.”

Exactly right, come along and enjoy this huge event and leave with some terrific memories and new ‘old’ friends. Discover more about the Wurstmarkt on the Bad Dürkheim culture and tourism website.

Getting there

Enjoy the Bad Dürkheim Wurstmarkt without having to worry about driving. The greatest wine festival in the world is in the heart of the Pfalz and is easy to get to by bus or Deutsche Bahn train from any direction, all around the clock. Leave your car at home and just enjoy yourself.
