Germany joins Space Multinational Force-Operation Olympic Defender

U.S. Space Command formally recognized Germany’s membership in Multinational Force-Operation Olympic Defender, Berlin, Oct. 11.

U.S. Space Force Gen. Stephen Whiting, USSPACECOM and Multinational Force OOD commander, German Ministry of Defence Military Strategy and Operations Director-General Lt. Gen. Gunter Schneider, and representatives from Australia, Canada and New Zealand participated in a formal accessions ceremony in Berlin to commemorate the historic occasion.

The multinational named operation represents a growing commitment among the closest allies in space to jointly strengthen defenses and deter aggression, ensuring space remains a domain that benefits all of humanity.

“Space is truly a team sport. The addition of Germany to our roster of growing like-minded partners contributes to our collective ability to address the growing threats in the domain and ensure space remains safe and secure for generations to come,” Whiting said. “The diverse perspectives, capabilities and opportunities for greater information sharing that our partners bring to bear is an asymmetric advantage that’s proof we are stronger together.”

Originally established in 2013 under U.S. Strategic Command, OOD has expanded to a multinational effort that focuses to optimize space operations, improve mission assurance, enhance resilience of space-based systems, synchronize efforts to strengthen deterrence against hostile actors and reduce the spread of debris orbiting the Earth. In Spring 2024, the commander of USSPACECOM

and MNF-OOD extended invitations to France, Germany and New Zealand. In September 2024, New Zealand formally accepted the offer.

“According to our assessment, multinational cooperation is key to security and defense in space as no nation can guarantee unimpeded access to and secure use of space unilaterally. Therefore, becoming a member of the OOD-community not only complements, but, from an operational perspective, crowns our other cooperation formats with the U.S. for the space domain.” Schneider said. “Our common efforts as allies to increase our Space Domain Awareness will not only lead to a better understanding of the space domain but it will also dissuade possible adversaries from dangerous and escalatory behavior in space as they will have to take into account that we can closely observe and evaluate each of their actions.”

86 MDG provides medical training for German SWAT members

The 86th Medical Group held a Tactical Combat Casualty Care training for 16 German SWAT members from eight states throughout Germany, at Ramstein Air Base, Oct. 7-11. The five-day course was the result of a Rheinland-Pfalz Special Operations Police Force medic who wanted to improve the knowledge of the German SWAT and establish a relationship between the German police and U.S. Air Force.

“Americans have the most experience worldwide in combat casualty care,” said Tobias Baezner, Rheinland-Pfalz Special Forces Police medic. “With Ramstein so close, we have the opportunity to receive training from our American partners and get the most updated information for our medical officers.”

Over the course of the week, 86th MDG members educated the German SWAT members on how to treat massive bleeding by using equipment usually unavailable to them.

“We do a really good job of training people here with our advanced technology,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andres Barela,

86th Healthcare Operations Squadron emergency response services technician. “We have high-tech mannequins that they can utilize to practice all the skills we are teaching them. I think that’s the part they enjoy the most.”

This training between the U.S. Air Force and German SWAT is the first of its kind at Ramstein AB. According to Baezner, as this new relationship grows it will become something that is mutually beneficial.

“The Americans live with us and support us so why not connect with them to make a mutually beneficial relationship,” said Baezner. “We can learn so much from

them and we can also show them what we are doing and share our knowledge.”

The course ended with a test where the German SWAT applied their knowledge into one final exam.

After approximately six hours of testing, all 16 members finished with passing scores.

“It was a great opportunity to bring our partners together to share our medical capabilities and train them on how we perform our duties,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Nelson Pacheco Roa, 86th Medical Group noncommissioned officer in charge of Education and Training.

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Trevor Calvert 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The 86th Airlift Wing is home to the only Cross Functional Airlift Support Personnel program in the U.S. European Command, giving this small — but efficient — team a big responsibility.

CASPER is a Mission Ready Airman program training Airmen from different Air Force Specialty Codes on skills that are needed to support a variety of missions.

To take Airmen from all around the force and provide them with the skill-set needed to complete the CASPER mission requires rigorous training. This training is completed through a combination of self-paced and in-person classes

conducted around the Airmen’s primary duty schedule.

“CASPER is used to fill in any voids for the wing, on any missions necessary,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Richard Colon, 86th Airlift Wing Agile Combat Employment superintendent. “We take any Airman and train them to work any job.”

Members of the team can expect to spend at least 30 days a year on training or missions. During this time they execute the skills they’ve been trained on and support flying training deployments around Europe in countries like Greece, Poland and Bulgaria.

“We’ve had situations before when something was broken or needed refueling and we had a CASPER member switch roles to fix

the problem,” said Colon. “Having a team that’s able to be so flexible in their support helps the missions greatly.”

CASPER is available to those who maintain a 90 or above on their physical fitness test and are between the ranks of E-5 and E-8 and O-1 and O-3.

CASPER is a small team that can do everything that goes into supporting a mission, whether that is operating forklifts, performing loadmaster duties or setting up landing and drop zones, according to U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Nicholas Coburn, 86th AW CASPER lead and Mission Ready Airmen program lead. CASPER supports the Airlift Wing’s diverse mission set, which could range from bringing cargo to Africa one day and the next

day medically evacuating someone from Poland.

“In my normal job I always get to load the cargo, but never see what happens beyond that or how we use it on missions,” said Coburn. “Being able to get out, see what everyone else does, and how they contribute to the mission gives me a better understanding of what our wing does beyond my normal job.”

The CASPER team often works closely with the 37th Airlift Squadron, 435th Air Ground Operations Wing, 86th Operations Support Squadron and 1st Combat Communications Squadron. These units work,

train and operate together to keep Airmen continuously ready and prepared for any real-world threats that may occur.

“Joining the CASPER team provides a different look at the Air Force for those who do not see the immediate impact of their primary duty,” said Coburn. “For example, it allows people in medical or finance to see the people and the mission they have an impact on – no matter how big or how small they believe their job affects others.”

For information and details about joining the CASPER team, please contact the team lead at DSN 314479-2236.

Energy Action Month 2024 — ready, resilient, reliable energy

Every October, the Department of the Air Force empowers installations to bring attention to energy use and how to better manage resources. We encourage Airmen and Civilians to create new human habits guided toward energy conservation. It is important to emphasize, habits are not only for the month of October. New habits can be carried all year round.

Energy Action Month 2024: Last year of “Powering Possibility”

Each year, Energy Action Month recognizes and highlights different themes. 2024 is the final year of the three-year theme, “Powering Possibility.” The DAF is highlighting its innovative approach to the development of resilient energy technologies to strengthen the combat capability and readiness of our forces both now and in the future.

Energy conservation and boosting energy efficiency plays a major role in our energy resilience. With conservation or improve efficiency, we can better plan for a more robust infrastructure and make better informed decisions for future energy demand. Your actions have a ripple effect on our energy dependence.

What is energy conservation and why it is important?

Energy conservation is achieved by minimizing energy consumption. This should not be confused with energy efficiency, which is defined as using technology that requires less energy to perform the same function. On most occasions, energy efficiency requires homeowners to make an investment toward current technology. Energy conservation has little to no cost to your pocket. These new habits can have numerous benefits or advantages. The most important benefits include:

1. Lower energy cost. Lighting accounts for approximately 10 percent of electricity consumption in households. In commercial buildings, lighting is approximately 25–40 percent of electricity consumption.

2. Less harm to the environment. Burning fossil fuels generate emissions that enter the environment and create a greenhouse effect. This effect traps heat and destabilizes the Earths temperatures, thus contributing to climate change. Estimated annual CO2 emissions are 14,020 pounds per household, assuming approximately 943 kWh per month (Source: U.S. Energy Information Administration — Residential Energy Consumption Survey).

3. Improves air quality. Clean air can reduce respiratory issues and improve overall health of the population. Consequently, fewer pollutants are absorbed by land and water bodies, resulting in improved water quality. Moreover, better air quality can help growth, reproduction and increase survival of vegetation. (Additional information can be found at: https:// www.epa.gov/enviroatlas/enviroatlas-benefit-category-clean-air).

4. Less energy demand can have an impact on sustainable energy for the future. This plays a role in extending the life of fuel resources, and ultimately, eliminates dependency of fossils fuels. This promotes the development of more sustainable technology and integration of more clean renewable energy sources to our energy generation.

Better understanding conventional radiators located around your workplace or household:

• Radiators heat the air around them through convection. Hot water flows though the pipes within the radiator, transferring heat to the metal surface, this heat warms up the air in the room in a circular motion.

• Radiators are supposed to warm up the space, not the person.

• Numbers on the radiator valve represents a different temperature. Which also represents the temperature of the room, not the radiator. Keep in mind, temperature ranges vary by valve manufacturers.

• Set and forget! It is recommended to set your radiator valve at a comfortable temperature for you, and not regularly changing the settings of the valve. Each space has a recommended ideal temperature for comfort.

• Proper ventilation of rooms. Ensure all windows are closed when the radiator is “on” (especially in higher settings), natural heat transfer is from hot to cold spaces. Set a time during the day for ventilation purposes. Controlled time in the morning and in the afternoon (3-8 minutes recommended time). Fresh air is needed for a healthy building.

• Clearance around radiators. Make sure all radiators are free and clear of large furniture, long curtains, clothing items, etc.

But also, you can help us in the day-to-day basis:

• Turn off lights when not in use or when natural daylight is sufficient.

• Turn off monitors at the end of workday. Enable power management function on office computers, which automatically puts monitors to sleep when not in use.

• Turn off office equipment when it is not needed at night or on weekends. Activate sleep settings on all printers, copiers, fax machines, scanners, and multifunction devices so that they automatically enter a low-powered sleep mode when inactive.

• Turn off power to computers, TVs, exercise equipment, lights, and all electronic devices when not in use to avoid wasting standby power.

• Plug multiple devices into a power strip with a surge protector so you can turn them all off with the flip of one switch, while also protecting them from damage.

• Use water wisely. Turn off when not in use, such as while brushing teeth and shaving. Prioritize water leaks, if needed.

• Carpool, use public transportation (e.g., buses, trains, etc.) or a bicycle to travel to work or different events.

As you can see, tips can be easily translated from your household to your workplace, and vice versa. Educate people around you and help us conserve energy and advocate for energy efficiency at the Kaiserslautern Military Community. Most importantly: If you do not need it, do not use it. Small changes can have a large impact over time.

Public Health Command Europe Soldier works towards his dream

Veterinary Food Inspection Specialist at Public Health Command Europe is working on advancing his career and becoming a U.S. Army officer.

Washington-native Sgt. Thomas Dozier, grew up on a Navy base due to his father being in the Navy and his mother serving in the Army.

“I’ve always been surrounded by the military and I decided to join right after high school,” said Dozier. “I really enjoy all of the various tasks the Army has presented me in the last six years.”

Dozier is a Veterinary Food Inspection Specialist at Public Health Command Europe and currently serves as the Biological Analysis Division noncommissioned officer in charge.

BAD receives food, water and animal samples from U.S. Army Europe and Africa to ensure food and water meet strict U.S. and host nation safety standards and animals are disease-free.

“I’m responsible for rabies testing which means that I receive the samples and conduct rabies testing to see if the samples carry the disease or not,” said Dozier. “Rabies testing is especially important for the health and safety of our service members in deployed locations.”

During his career, Dozier had the opportunity to explore more of the public health scope.

“Working in a veterinary treatment facility helped me understand better that public health is so much more than food safety and defense which was my primary focus as a food inspector,” said Dozier. “In the VTF, I was responsible for military working dog treatment and I tracked zoonotic diseases and promoted not only animal but also human welfare.”

Even before joining the Army, Dozier has always wanted to pursue a career in the medical field.

“At any given moment you can be told that you’re going somewhere else to do something new that’s the way the Army is,” said Dozier. “I have a passion for helping people and helping them to be as healthy as they can be.”

Dozier is working towards his

goal of becoming an army officer in the health care field and utilizing Army commissioning programs to go to college fulltime in the coming years. The AMEDD Enlisted Commissioning Program allows soldiers to complete up to 24 months of nursing school while retaining their rank, grade, and military benefits.

“As a health care professional,

I can provide the care, support and education needed to help individuals achieve and maintain their health.” said Dozier.

According to Dozier, working in the health care field offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact on people’s lives.

“Follow your heart, it will lead you to wherever you are meant to be.” said Dozier.

Ramstein Cybersecurity Awareness Month — Knowing the cyber battlefield

Identify — Know the battlefield

It is no secret that modern society is becoming more integrated with cyberspace. Social media, banking, and shopping have become everyday online activities. Almost everything requires you to create some form of account, and each of these accounts ties to you in a way that can be used against you if you are not careful. This ‘Attack Surface’ is your personal security battlefield, and knowing how to control it is essential.

Protect — Fortify defenses: Safeguard data

Everyone knows that your password is the single most important, and vulnerable, piece of information for your account. Knowing how to harden these across all your accounts will already set you above the average user.

It used to be that an eight-character password was considered secure but with advances in password-cracking technology, the minimum safe length is twelve characters, some recommend sixteen, and that’s only if you are including capital letters, numbers, and special characters. Increasing the length of your password further can only improve your security, but as they get longer, they become more difficult to remember. How can you combat this? There are several answers from more technical to less.

A less technical solution to this modern-day problem is the use of mnemonics. A common way of formulating long passwords is to combine several words or phrases, change some of the letters to capitals, and add additional letters, numbers, and special characters. This may create a decently strong password depending on the phrases chosen, but this technique may also have its own drawbacks.

Hackers are constantly scrubbing passwords for common phrases and if they have any information about you, such as birthday

or names of children pulled from Facebook, they may be able to guess your phrases without much effort. Additionally, it may become difficult to remember all your phrases across every account if you must remember a password for your online banking, amazon account, social media, etc.

A more technical solution exists in password managers. Most browsers come with an included password manager that can not only autofill your password when logging in, but they can also generate new, secure passwords for you whenever you create a new account.

These functionalities are free and are automatically enabled in most browsers, but these can also have security drawbacks. If a hacker is able to access your phone or computer, the first thing they are likely to check is your browser’s password manager. These passwords are often stored unencrypted and don’t require any sort of authentication or password to access the full list.

To combat this, an option available to you is a third-party password manager. Password managers, just like the in-browser options, can store, autofill, and generate passwords for you, and are available both on desktop and on smartphone app stores. They will also encrypt your passwords when you are not using them, warn you if your password is weak, and often require a separate form of authentication, such as two-factor authentication, biometric, or another password.

Major companies also have two factor authentication as an option for their websites. This can be a crucial step to drastically increase your personal security. Often, this is a text message sent to your phone or the use of a third-party authentication tool. Two-factor authentication may require some setup time, but the added layer of security is a must have for certain accounts such as your online banking login. Once you get started with it, however, it’s easy as 1-2-3 (Remember, 1-2-3 is not a secure password!)

Detect — Detecting the undetected

Data breaches occur when hackers access the systems of the company you have an account with, rather than your specific accounts itself. These data breaches often leak hundreds or thousands of accounts, including usernames and password. For instance, there was a major breach of Social Security numbers in April that leaked nearly 2.9 Billion Social Security numbers and transaction records (Los Angeles Times, Aug. 15).

Incidents such as these expose personally identifiable information to unauthorized parties which can have devastating consequences when used improperly. Luckily, there are several ways to stay on top of these events.

Certain password managers will warn you if there is a data breach involving the account you have saved with them. This can allow you to swiftly respond by changing your password or deleting your account with the company if you so choose.

There are also several cybersecurity news websites that report data breaches as they occur. One of the most reliable is the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. As America’s Cyber Defense agency, they not only provide news updates of recent events, but also have multiple articles providing cybersecurity advice on topics not covered in this article. You can reach their website at https://www.cisa.gov/.

Respond — Mobilizing against threats

If one of your accounts was compromised in a regular manner such as your password being cracked, your first step should always be to change your password. Once that is completed, there is usually an option within your account settings to logout of all devices. Doing this will logout the hacker who has access to your account, but they will no longer have your login information to re-enter the account.

It is best to review what actions the

hacker may have taken. If it is a social media account, your next step should be to take down any posts the hacker may have made and make one of your own acknowledging what happened. This will warn others to ignore any posts the hacker has made or any direct messages they may have sent. It is also recommended to check the accounts you have linked to your profile or account as they may also be at risk, especially if you use the same password for each of them!

Recover — Bounce back stronger

After taking all the steps to respond to your cyber incident, you may, and should, want to prevent it from happening again. One of the first steps is to follow the advice laid out in this article. USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s Family Advocacy Program team educates Soldiers through creative PT session for Domestic Violence Awareness Month

In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Family Advocacy Program team took a creative approach, conducting a circuit training session at the Functional Fitness Center on Rhine Ordnance Barracks in Kaiserslautern, Oct. 8. The mission was clear: The Family Advocacy Program team will educate Army units about FAP resources during unit physical training, in order to increase awareness and prevent (or reduce) domestic violence and child abuse.

U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz’s FAP team took a creative approach, conducting a circuit training session on Oct. 8 at the Functional Fitness Training Center (Bldg. 229) on Rhine Ordnance Barracks. Over 70 Soldiers from the 1st Inland Cargo Transfer Company, the 39th Transportation Battalion, and the 16th Sustainment Brigade took part in the event.

“This was not just another physical training session,” said Letrice Titus, Family Advocacy Program manager at USAG Rheinland-Pfalz. “At each station, Soldiers were challenged with questions about the FAP program. If they provided the correct answers, they proceeded to the next station. However, if they responded incorrectly, they were

required to perform a designated exercise and run a short lap.”

The PT session featured five stations, each with two exercises to complete. Soldiers rotated in pairs visiting each station as battle buddies.

As the training came to an end, the soldiers found themselves in the front leaning rest position, where they were tested on their knowledge of the FAP program. Before leaving, FAP staff encouraged them to visit the FAP table to collect educational materials and stay informed about upcoming events.

“The FAP team created this fun and interactive activity to connect with the Soldiers and effectively educate them on the FAP program and its resources,” said Titus. “Our team’s goal was to become embedded with military unit across the USAG Rheinland-Pfalz footprint, to ensure that Soldiers know who we are, understand the resources offered, and are educated on domestic violence and child abuse prevention.”

Titus said that this innovative approach made the learning both engaging and impactful, leaving a lasting impression on the Soldiers.

Capt. Eric Inman, company commander of the 1st Inland Cargo Transfer Company, 39th Transportation Battalion, 16th Sustainment Brigade, thanked the FAP team for their insights into the resources available to the community.

“We are truly grateful to the Family Advocacy Program for leading today’s PT and sharing their invaluable knowledge with our Soldiers, he said. “As we observe Domestic Violence Awareness Month, it is crucial to recognize the support services that FAP provides.”

Inman also emphasized the importance of building a safer environment for the community.

“During PT today, they guided us through procedures and resources to help prevent and address domestic violence within our community,” adding, “Together, we can build a safer environment for all.”

The Family Advocacy Program leaders like Titus use these active engagements with units with the aim that the Soldiers who are learning about the programs, will become advocates for the programs in their communities.

“Since it’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we are working to train our community members on what resources we offer for prevention, protection and assistance,” said Titus. “We also know that today, they all got a quality workout in too!”

If you have any questions or want the FAP Team to lead PT for your Soldiers, give Army Community Services a call or come

visit in-person at any time. They are located on Kleber Kaserne, ACS building 3210, 0611-143-5419000 or DSN 541-9000. Please visit https://kaiserslautern.armymwr. com/ for more information.

102d SSB completes NETMOD in Baumholder: Enhanced cybersecurity, network performance for DOD operations in USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s footprint

The 102d Strategic Signal Battalion, Network Enterprise Center — Baumholder held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Smith Barracks, Oct. 17, to mark the successful completion of the NETMOD (Network Modernization) — Baumholder project, as part of the IT modernization effort that Baumholder and the Global Enterprise Network Modernization – OCONUS have been collaborating on since 2018.

NETMOD is a Department of Defense initiative aimed at enhancing network security by integrating various technologies into a single, unified system, upgrading internet connections and improving overall network performance. The initiative aims to provide a more secure and efficient network for DoD operations and protect information from cyber attacks.

“Most recently, the team completed migrations, effectively standing up the network,” said Andrea Zalasky, project management specialist for the Program Executive Office Command, Control, Communications and Network.

The upgrade includes an important telecommunications and

infrastructure overhaul, including power, grounding, inside plant, outside plant, and the design and implementation of a new application delivery network on Smith Barracks.

“The new network upgrade provides built-in redundancy and resiliency, which will benefit garrison units by ensuring that the network remains operational even in the event of a failure or disruption,” said Zalasky. “The implementation of the upgrade may result in some network outages and disruptions across the Area of Responsibility, that will be communicated by the GENM-O team to units in advance.”

The NETMOD initiative is being rolled out across the Army, with the aim of simplifying network management and enhancing overall performance and security on an installation-by-installation basis.

The 102d SSB’s command team traveled to Baumholder for the occasion, taking time to acknowledge the employees’ hard work and dedication.

“Thank you for having us here today to celebrate this important occasion,” said Lt. Col. Matthew Britnell, 102d SSB commander. “Every component of our organization possesses its own distinct culture, and when I think of Baumholder, I’m reminded of a small yet highly effective team.”

Britnell praised the team for its success in establishing strong relationships within the community.

“Your ability to build strong relationships within this relatively small but expanding community is truly commendable,” he said. “I greatly appreciate the way the team comes together to support one another and achieve our goals.”

Command Sgt. Maj. Stormy Graham, 102d SSB, expressed his admiration for the team’s efforts.

“The support you all provide to the organization and the AoR is truly impressive,” he said. “It’s through our shared fellowship, camaraderie, and collective work that we are able to successfully accomplish our mission.”

ABC IN KMC: Samhain

Ghosts and goblins, spiders and witches, trick-or-treating, jack-o-lanterns, and spooky parties? We are all familiar with typical Halloween scenes and activities. But, have you ever wondered where the tradition originated and how it was brought across the Atlantic Ocean and then back to Europe in the last century?

The celebration on the last day of October has a rich history that dates back over 2,000 years to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced “sow-win”). The festival marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter, a time often associated with death. The Celts, who lived in what is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, believed that on the night of Oct. 31, the boundary between the living and the dead became blurred, allowing spirits to return to earth.

During Samhain, Celts would extinguish their hearth fires and gather to light a communal bonfire, which was believed to ward off evil spirits. They wore costumes, typically made from animal heads and skins, to disguise themselves from the spirits. Offerings of food and drink were

left outside to appease the wandering spirits and ensure a good harvest for the coming year.

Ancient Celts marked Samhain as the most significant of the four quarterly fire festivals, taking place at the midpoint between the fall equinox and the winter solstice. During this time of year, hearth fires in family homes were left to burn out while the harvest was gathered.

After the harvest work was complete, celebrants joined with Druid priests to light a community fire using a wheel that would cause friction and spark flames. The wheel was considered a representation of the sun and used along with prayers. Cattle were sacrificed, and participants took a flame from the communal bonfire back to their home to relight the hearth.

It is also noted that in some areas Samhain was a mandatory celebration lasting three days and three nights where the community was required to show themselves to local kings or chieftains. Failure to participate was believed to result in punishment from the gods, usually illness or death.

There may have also been a military aspect to Samhain in Ireland, with holiday thrones prepared for commanders of soldiers. Anyone who committed a crime or

used their weapons during the celebration faced a death sentence.

As the Roman Empire expanded into Celtic territories, Samhain traditions began to merge with Roman festivals. By the 9th century, the influence of Christianity had spread into Celtic lands. Pope Gregory III designated Nov. 1 as All Saints’ Day, a time to honor saints and martyrs. The evening before became known as All Hallows’ Eve, eventually shortened to Halloween.

Halloween was brought to the United States by Irish and Scottish immigrants in the 19th century. These immigrants carried with them the traditions of Samhain and All Hallows’ Eve. In America, Halloween evolved into a community-centered holiday, with activities such as trick-or-treating, costume parties, and pumpkin carving becoming popular. Although Samhain, or Halloween, originated in Europe, it was reintroduced to many European countries from the United States in the late 20th century.

Today, Halloween in Ireland is celebrated with a mix of traditional and modern festivities. Some of the highlights include the Púca Festival in County Meath, which celebrates the mythological Púca, a shape-shifting creature from Celtic

folklore. The event features music, myth, food, folklore, and fire. The Macnas Parade in Galway along the West Coast is a spectacular event with giant puppets, performers and musicians taking to the streets. The Bram Stoker Festival in Dublin celebrates the legacy of the author of “Dracula’ with gothicthemed events, performances and installations.

Halloween celebrations have become very popular in Germany, and you may experience children trick-or-treating in costume in your village. Traditions such as costume parties, haunted houses and even parades are gaining popularity among adolescents and young adults, in particular, in view of the German holiday the following day.

A few special events to let your blood run cold: Europa Park invites visitors to Horror Nights – Traumatica, a festival of fear. The event will provide plenty of shock effects and nasty nightmares. Cruel creatures, monsters and dark figures will spread fear and terror.

Or, spend Halloween at Castle Satzvey: Ghostly creatures will crawl out of every corner of the extensive castle grounds and terrify anyone who approaches. A particular horror highlight is the

course of terror in the dark castle park - definitely not for the fainthearted! A child-friendly program starts at 3 p.m., but at 6 p.m. a spooky ferryman will greet visitors at the lake. For the braver, a disco will begin at 10 p.m.

What would the season be without bright round orange pumpkins as floral decoration, spooky jack-o-lanterns or picking your own pumpkin at one of the large pumpkin farms in the area?

Use your last chance to visit the pumpkin exhibit at Gartenschau in Kaiserslautern, with this year’s motto “jungle book,” not quite so scary, but ideal for children.

The zoo in Siegelbach has a special “spooky night” for younger visitors on Oct. 31 and the Celtic village at Donnersberg will again host its annual Samhain festival with bonfires, Celtic arts and crafts and a torch walk to the circle of statues in its Celtic Garden in the evening.

Whatever you decide to do, whether it’s carving pumpkins with your kids, spending a bloodchilling time at a haunted house or castle, watching a scary movie, or just rushing to the door every few minutes to cater to trickor-treaters, make sure to have a spooky weekend and an eerie Halloween night! Boo!

Army senior leaders discuss concerns of Soldiers, Families

As Army Secretary Christine E. Wormuth, Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy A. George and Sgt. Maj. of the Army Michael R. Weimer travel the globe, they meet with young soldiers and installation leaders to hear their concerns and then try to address them.

It’s part of Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III’s top Defense Department priority: taking care of people. As such, these troop and family visits are conducted by all of the military service senior leaders with concerns and solutions being similar throughout the department.

The Army senior leaders spoke yesterday of troops’ top concerns at the Association of the United States Army’s annual meeting and exposition in Washington.

“We do have an obligation to every soldier and their families, and a big part of that obligation, I think, is making sure that we are giving you all the quality of life that you need to thrive and to sustain you and to prepare you for the

rigors of Army life,” said Wormuth. The Army has put a lot of effort and resources in trying to make improvements to quality-of-life programs, such as barracks, Armyowned family housing, privatized housing, facilities, child care centers, spouse employment, transition assistance, pay and the exceptional family member program, she said.

“We know we don’t have everything right. There are absolutely things that are still not working the way that we’d like them to,” Wormouth said.

George said each installation has unique challenges so he, Wormuth and Weimer empower local solutions and allow commanders flexibility, rather than direct them from the top.

“It’s not really about how much money you spend — and we spend a lot of money on this and it’s worth it for our soldiers and families — but we want to make sure that we’re actually targeting it to the right kind of things, to the people where they really need it. And I think that that’s our big focus,” George said.

This year a new child-friendly program for families will start at 3 p.m. Those who stay longer can go into the castle park from 5 p.m. But be careful, dark figures and monsters will soon be leaving their hiding places. From 6 p.m. the spooky ferryman will silently greet his guests on the castle lake — goory figures will terrify many a visitor. Who dares to enter the castle courtyard, which lies eerily in the twilight? A course of terror awaits the particularly brave. Those who dare can go in, but will you be able to get out again? The entrance opens at 7p.m., while the disco starts at 10 p.m. Costumes are welcome! Details: https://www.burgsatzvey.de/veranstaltungen/ halloween-2024-1/

SAMHAIN FESTIVAL

OCT. 31, KELTENDORF, STEINBACH (DONNERSBERG)

The Celtic village in Steinbach will top off the season with a traditional Samhaim festival. The event has its origins 2,000 years ago and marks the end of the year and beginning of winter. Celts then ate, drank and celebrated the occasion together. The village will offer displays, bonfires, activities for kids and a walk with torches to the circle of spooky Celtic statues at the garden nearby, where guests will receive information about Celtic traditions at the large bonfire. Don’t miss out on this very special and different “Halloween” event. Visitors are requested to carpool, as parking is limited in the small village. For details, see: http://www. keltendorf-steinbach.de/ Also see ABC in KMC on Page 14

NOV. 3, 7:30 P.M., FRITZ-WUNDERLICH-HALLE, KUSEL

Manfred Mann has created several songs for eternity. Global hits like “Blinded By The Light”, “Mighty Quinn”, or “Davy’s On The Road Again” are classics of pop and rock history that have not gathered any dust to this day. Born in South Africa, Mann founded his Earth Band in 1971. By then he had already had a successful career with a pop band that bore his name. The Earth Band quickly became regulars in the charts around the world with their hits. Over five decades later, Manfred Mann’s desire for concerts remains unbroken. Not surprisingly, some say Manfred Mann’s Earth Band is better and rockier today than ever. Tickets: www.ticket-regional.de

German doctor who strengthened host-nation medical partnership with

Story and photo by Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Public Affairs Office

Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, the largest overseas U.S. hospital and the only one with the distinction of being a Level II Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons is also certified by the German Trauma Network as a regional Level II Trauma Center. It is the only U.S. medical facility that is dual-certified in the U.S. and a host nation.

Professor (Dr.) Timothy Pohlemann, who was instrumental in helping LRMC achieve this distinction as well as providing critical care to our warfighters, has retired after more than 40 years of remarkable service in trauma and orthopedic surgery.

The farewell ceremony, held at the Homburg campus, included tributes to his contributions to medicine, education, and international collaboration, particularly his impact on the relationship between Universitätsklinikum des Saarlandes and LRMC.

Pohlemann’s partnership with LRMC enhanced interoperability between the medical systems of both countries.

“The importance of militarycivilian trauma partnerships became evident after a series of attacks at the Hamid Karzai International Airport on Aug. 26, 2021,” said Stuever. “Dr. Pohlemann and eight other physicians from UKS Homburg were waiting at the LRMC main gate to help. A total of 19 patients were transferred to LRMC that day. After triage, Professor Pohlemann and his team arranged for the immediate transfer of pediatric patients to UKS Homburg.”

As Pohlemann steps into retirement, his successor, Prof. (Dr.) Emmanouil Liodakis, takes up the mantle of leadership at UKS.

“Professor Pohlemann’s vision extended beyond the operating room. He was key in fostering a strong partnership between UKS and LRMC. This collaboration bridged the gap between German and American medical practices, leading to enhanced trauma care for both civilian and military patients, said Burnett.

and U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. (Dr.) Mary Stuever, LRMC’s trauma medical director, presented Pohlemann with a challenge coin and a U.S. flag.

For his contributions and service, U.S. Army Col. Cluade Burnett

The U.S. flag was flown on Aug 28, to commemorate the three-year

anniversary of Pohlemann’s selfless act of service, when he and other surgeons from UKS Homburg were granted emergency privileges and joined the LRMC medical staff to care for critically injured U.S. service members and Afghani citizens.

“Dr. Liodakis, a distinguished orthopedic and trauma surgeon, is well regarded for his expertise in treating musculoskeletal injuries, particularly pelvic and acetabular fractures. The LRMC trauma and health engagements teams are eager to continue the partnership under his leadership and advance the collaborative efforts initiated by Prof. Pohlemann,” said Burnett.

these places might just be for you!

Haunted castles in the Pfälzer Wald (Palatinate Forest)

If you’ve been in Germany for long, you probably know that autumn hikes can turn from tranquil to terrifying in the blink of an eye. Or, more accurately, in the setting of a sun. Once the shadows start to come out, then the woods can feel full-on Hansel and Gretel.

That goes double for the castles in and around Pfälzer Wald, all of which are located an easy day trip away from the KMC. While nearly every castle in Germany has a ghost story of some kind (granted, there was an unfortunate amount of torturing, killing, and imprisoning in medieval German castles), here are three good places to start.

Burg Nanstein in Landstuhl is easy to access and has quite the bloody history. Franz von Sickingen, a notable 15th century German knight, was crushed to death under a pile of rubble after unsuccessfully picking a fight with the Archbishop of Trier and his cannons. Burg Beilstein, which is just south of Kaiserslautern, makes for a perfect late afternoon autumn hike. You can arrive just as the shadows get long, and reflect on the legend of a 12th century girl and her ghost companions who thwarted a pair of forest bandits. Finally, Burg Bewartstein, an hour south of Kaiserslautern on the FrenchGerman border, bills itself as a legendary robber baron castle… and lives up to the billing. It only accepts cash (proper for any robber baron), has a castle ghost (of medieval origin, naturally), and has tons of dark nooks and crannies.

Ghost tour through Stuttgart’s Old Town

Many people think that the most horrifying thing about Stuttgart is the traffic. While traffic in the lovely Baden-Württemburg city to the south can be daunting, the city also abounds in specters.

Fortunately, thrill seekers have a great way to get the inside scoop about Stuttgart’s ghosts, thanks to the Stuttgart Ghostwalk Tour. The tour is well worth the €15 (€10 for children ages 6-16). Checking in at around 90 minutes, the tour winds by the Old Castle, the Market Hall, and the Collegiate Church. Get ready to learn about headless horsemen,

bad monks, and twilight ghosts.

Haunted Munich

It makes sense that Munich might seem haunted, especially once Oktoberfest fades to a close and all those jolly people become frowning shadows of their former festive selves.

Jokes aside, Munich offers one of the best ghost tours in Germany (the “Munich Ghosts and Spirits Evening Walking Tour”). You’ll learn about Munich’s supernatural side (who knew there were so many ghosts there?), as well as its historical dark side. The tour can be pricy (around €50 per person) but actually provides pretty decent value, especially since it doubles as a two-hour city tour with an excellent guide and three shots of, well, liquid spirits.

Ghastly Nuremberg

Even at the best of times, Nuremberg can be a little spooky. Old buildings, a checkered history, that gnarly medieval dungeons museum? Oh yeah. Definitely haunting.

And once late October hits, things get even spookier. One of the best ways to learn all about Nuremberg is to sign up for the Nuremberg Ghosts and Gallows tour. It takes place at night, is led by a professional guide, and covers a very wide range of scary stuff (from supernatural to extraterrestrial to the terrible stuff that humans can do to one another). It will be an evening you won’t forget, guaranteed.

The Devil’s Bridge

This one is kind of a stretch, in many ways. It’s a long way from Kaiserslautern (7 hours by car). And it isn’t exactly haunted, at least not in the traditional sense.

But, dang. The Rakotzbrücke (Devil’s Bridge), located in Gablenz, mere kilometers from the Poland border, is awesome. As in, awesome in every way. Structurally, it’s a marvel. When the water beneath it is clear, it forms a perfect circle with the reflection.

And the legend behind its creation inspires awe, as well. Allegedly, the engineering was so difficult that the devil had to be brought in to help finish the bridge in the early 1860s. Rather than take a cut from the subpar architects who couldn’t get the job done, the devil got the soul of the first poor person to walk across it. No word on who that was. But if you do visit, you should be safe!
