It probably can be said that there is a castle in nearly every small town in Germany. One that must be seen is Hohenzollern Castle, known as the jewel of the Swabian Alps (or Schwäbische Alb, in German). With its impressive towers and stir-

ring turrets, this BadenWürttemberg castle is one of Germany’s most majestic castles. While we were touring, we met a couple from the Kaiserslautern area who had decided this was an absolute must-see stop on their last “PCSing” trip of Germany. And they were right!

“We were able to honor Kaleth O. Wright by naming our leadership school after him,” said USAF Capt. George Bermudez, 86th Force Support Squadron force development flight commander. “Chief Wright has a rich history at Ramstein, having served as an ALS instructor and the command chief for the Third Air Force. This renaming recognizes his significant role in the professional development of countless Airmen.”

“It means the world to me,” said

Wright. “I have a special connection to this place because I taught at Kisling, and I even spent time teaching here at ALS, mentoring and working with Airmen.”

On the following day, Wright hosted a two-hour Q&A session at Ramstein AB. During the event, Airmen in attendance asked questions on many topics, to which Wright shared insights from his personal life and military career.

“Learn as much as you can, absorb as much as you can and be on a mission to be the best version of yourself,” said Wright.

With approximately 500 students going through ALS every year, Wright’s legacy as an educator and leader will be remembered for generations to come.

If you follow a few simple rules in the kitchen, you can cut power consumption by 50 percent when cooking without making any major purchases:

» Always heat water in an electric kettle

» Always use the saucepan with a lid and, after boiling, reduce the power on the stove.

» Use appliances such as egg cookers and coffee machines, as well as the microwave oven for small quantities and short cooking times.

» Use the coffee maker and thermos flask. A coffee machine that brews directly into the thermos flask is ideal.

Germany enhances border control measures: What this means for travelers, residents

Germany has recently implemented expanded border control measures, which now include checks at crossings to all nine of its neighboring countries. This decision is primarily driven by the need to further limit irregular migration and to enhance the internal security of the nation.

On Sep. 16, the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community officially notified the European Commission of the temporary reintroduction of border controls at Germany’s land borders with France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Denmark.

Beginning Sept. 16, when traveling, please ensure that you carry your passports, SOFA cards, ID cards, and either TDY orders or leave approvals with you. It's also recommended that you have contact rosters with you, in case something happens, and you need to reach your chain of command.

German border guards should recognize the SOFA and ID cards but, just to be on the safe side, passports are the best means for identification. Please also take an international driver’s permit with you if you are driving across borders.

This initiative will remain in effect for a duration of six months, allowing for border checks at all of Germany’s land borders starting on that date. Prior to the announcement, border controls with Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Switzerland were already in place.

“The new border control measures can likely cause delays,” said Dennis Mathis, security specialist, U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz. “My recommendation is for everyone to travel with the proper documents, to include passports and an alternate form of ID.”

Mathis emphasized that following your commander’s foreign travel policy is essential, not only as a procedural obligation, but also for maintaining personal safety as well as organizational security.

“Reporting foreign travel to your organization’s security manager is a vital step in this process. The security manager can provide you with valuable insights and information on country-specific safety measures, local laws, and cultural considerations. This preparation helps mitigate unnecessary risks and enhances your overall travel experience,” he said.

The set of border control measures includes both fixed and mobile

operations, allowing officials to turn people away at the border according to European Union and national laws. These measures are applied in a flexible way, changing based on the current situation and location.

The Federal Police (Polizei) are working closely with police in neighboring countries to promote relationships built on trust. The cross-border police cooperation involves employing joint patrols and the establishment of (additional) police and customs cooperation centers, among other collaborative efforts.

In light of these developments, the (German) Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser has advised all travelers to ensure they carry proper identification when crossing the border.

For USAG Rheinland-Pfalz employees or community members who have questions about the new border control measures, the commander’s foreign travel policy, or to report foreign travel, please reach out to the garrison’s Security Management team on the garrison website page at https://home. army.mil/rheinland-pfalz/about/ directorates-support-offices/s357operations-dptms/security-office.

USAG Rheinland-Pfalz leaders meet with Baumholder officials to strengthen German-American ties, review local development initiatives

Col. Jeffery Higgins, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz commander, along with Rodney Harris, interim deputy garrison manager, recently made an official inaugural visit to the city hall of the District of Baumholder. Upon their arrival, they were welcomed by Baumholder District Mayor Bernd Alsfasser and Baumholder City Mayor Günther Jung.

During the visit, Higgins and Harris received a comprehensive digital presentation that detailed the organizational structure and governance of the District of Baumholder. The presentation also included an overview of the rich history and development of the city, highlighting its evolution over the years and its significance within the region.

During the meeting, Alsfasser and Jung emphasized the importance of German-American friendship, showcasing pictures from various joint events that exemplify this strong bond.

“We embody the spirit of German-American friendship here in Baumholder,” Alsfasser said. “Our doors are always open to you.”

In addition to discussing the importance of this relationship, the mayors also brought attention to several key initiatives currently underway in the district. They outlined the development of the new

Ökompark Heide/Westrich business park, which aims to promote economic growth and create new opportunities for local businesses. They also addressed ongoing construction projects designed to enhance the city’s infrastructure, ensuring that Baumholder remains an exciting and easy to access place for both residents and visitors.

“Your presentation was very

informative and clearly demonstrates the significance of the U.S. troop presence for both the city and the region,” said Higgins.

The commander expressed optimism about the future of the military community in Baumholder, pointing out that various construction projects aimed at enhancing infrastructure would make the U.S. base more appealing. He also

acknowledged the challenges that come with these developments, such as increased traffic from construction sites and a shortage of housing.

“We will be hosting a media day in the near future, and we plan to invite the mayors from the region,” said Higgins. “We want the public to be informed, we want to be good neighbors.”

There was a shared belief that providing accurate information, within the limits of security regulations, promotes mutual understanding, and that collaboration will strengthen the ties between both nations.

“The USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Baumholder Military Community will continue to be a trustworthy and good partner,” said Col. Jeffery Higgins.

ENDEX, ENDEX, ENDEX: USAG Rheinland-Pfalz completes full scale exercise

It was an animated Wednesday afternoon in U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz’s Emergency Operations Center.

Shuffling papers, ringing phone lines and lively conversations ceased when a resounding voice yelled “ENDEX!” in the busy operations center, signaling the end of an exercise.

U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz held a tri-annual Full-Scale Exercise, Sep. 9 to 11 to test the garrison’s preparedness and ability to respond to crises using realistic and challenging exercise scenarios.

Col. Jeffery Higgins, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz commander, emphasized several critical focus areas for the exercise.

“The garrison’s focus for this exercise was to create a shared understanding of the measures required to keep the public safe, ensure the effectiveness of our Emergency Operations Center and give the exercise participants the authority and tools to proactively shape the fight by identifying and addressing threats well in advance,” said Higgins.

Developed and evaluated by Installation Management Command, the exercise was conducted to test the operational capability of the installation’s emergency response and coordination systems in an interactive manner.

“These exercise scenarios at the garrison are set up to identify, train and demonstrate the ability to contain the scenario incident, shorten the duration of the incident, and ability to speed the recovery from the incident,” said Brady Gross, exercise evaluator and deputy public affairs officer for U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden.

Paving the way to success

Preparations for the exercise were one year in the making as planners meticulously worked designing scenarios to stress and challenge garrison leaders and employees who are responsible to protect and serve Europe’s most unique garrison with a footprint covering 28 installation sites geographically dispersed throughout Germany’s Rheinland Palatinate and with a population of approximately 50,000 service members, dependents and federal employees.

Full steam ahead

The scenario required the garrison to respond to and mitigate multiple incidents occurring simultaneously at several installations spread over 30 kilometers from each other. Concurrently, Community Reaction Forces and additional military police patrols were activated and deployed to support the installations with the highest risks based on the exercise scenario.

Emily Roemer, antiterrorism officer for the directorate of plans, training, mobilization and security, was praised by exercise evaluators for her coordination efforts between teams from 21st Theater Sustainment Command and the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, who supported the exercise by providing additional personnel and assets as needed.

“Overall, coordination went well during the exercise, despite some communication challenges with personnel on the ground as the scenarios evolved,” said Emily. “Thankfully, I have a great working relationship with the protection coordinators from each installation, ensuring they are supported in their efforts and plans regarding troop diversion, anti-terrorism — anything and everything protection related.”

As a lesson learned, Emily aims to develop and implement plans to improve secondary and tertiary means of communication.

Tammy Muckenfuss, director of public affairs and an exercise participant, agreed with Emily’s takeaway.

“There are always opportunities for improved communications. Fast, accurate information is critical in any incident response; and getting accurate information can be one of the hardest things to do in an evolving situation when chaos and confusion is high,” said Tammy. “It takes teamwork, trust

and collaboration from everyone in the garrison to verify and confirm what’s actually ‘going on’ during an incident, which then enables us [public affairs] to provide good information to our workforce and our communities quickly.”

The real MVPs

Although the exercise involved significant teamwork, Higgins and the garrison leaders recognized Emily Roemer, Stephen Lyczak and Sgt. Noelle France as the standout performers throughout. They were awarded garrison coins at an After-Action Review attended by Installation Command Europe’s Regional Director, Mr. Tommy Mize and Installation Management Command's Deputy Commanding General, Maj. Gen. James M. Smith

“It’s a privilege on behalf of Command Sgt. Maj. Wrensch and myself to give these three individuals a commander’s coin for their excellence in leadership during a stressful period of time. We’re grateful to have these professionals on the team,” said Higgins.

Preparation is the key to success

The buck doesn’t stop with the tri-annual FSE when it comes to staying prepared. The garrison conducts annual integrated protection exercises that are internally planned and evaluated to enhance readiness and protect personnel and resources.

“U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz applies lessons learned from each exercise, along with new objectives, to continuously improve protection capabilities across the garrison,” said Lee Lewis, chief of operations for DPTMS.

During the exercise, the ALERT! Mass Warning Notification System was used consistently to provide direct contact to garrison employees, and community members. Should a real-life incident occur, the ALERT! System would be employed.

Additionally, all U.S. Army personnel stationed at or on assigned in Europe are required to register with the ALERT! Mass Warning Notification System and family members are highly encouraged to do so. To register, visit the garrison’s website https://home.army. mil/rheinland-pfalz/.

During an emergency, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz will notify community members for the most up-to-date information through the garrison’s social media pages, https://www.facebook.com/army. rp, https://www.facebook.com/ USAGRheinlandPfalzBaumholder, https://www.instagram.com/usag_ rp/?hl=en and through the ALERT! Mass Warning Notification System.

If you have a real-world emergency at any time, please remember to call 1-1-0 (Germany) or 1-1-2 (Europe) from any phone line to connect with emergency services.

21st TSC works to build trust, transparency with host nation

Story and photos by Brian Lamar 21st Theater Sustainment Command

The smell of roasted bratwurst and grilled pork belly sandwiches filled the air as hundreds of citizens from the towns of Rückweiler, Rohrbach and Hahnweiler mingled with Soldiers assigned to the 95th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion before an official partnership signing ceremony began at Rückweiler’s Dorfgemeinschaftshaus on Sep. 6.

The purpose of the event labeled “Projekt Partnerschaft” was to officially document the commitment of partnership between the 95th CSSB, U.S. Army Baumholder and the surrounding communities.

According to Lutz Altekrüger, the Rückweiler mayor, similar partnerships between municipalities and Bundeswehr (German) military units are common with roughly 700 officially registered sponsorships throughout Germany. However, Altekrüger stated sponsorships between German communities and U.S. units are relatively rare.

This signing is in addition to a recently established (February 2024) mutual-aid agreement between U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz and local civilian agencies for enhanced emergency services in the region.

During the event, Lt. Col. Robin Eskelson, commander of the 95th CSSB gave words of assurance to the attendees. “We aim to bridge any perceived divides between our military community and the incredible community that exists beyond the gates of our installations,” she said. “Today is truly a day of celebration, a day that we hope will serve as the foundation of a relationship that strengthens the bond between our

two great nations”.

Altekrüger, who spoke on behalf of all three town’s mayors at the ceremony stated that due to the size of the 95th CSSB, the idea of one small town partnering with them would be daunting. “The unit is really big. 1,200 Soldiers is a bit much for a big community like ours. Rückweiler has only 450 residents. We decided to have all three towns come together as a cultural community,” he explained.

According to Altekrüger, the towns plan to invite the 95th CSSB Soldiers to future cultural festivals, environmental volunteer events and

participate in marksmanship events with the town’s Schützen Club.

The ceremony opened with the U.S. Army Europe and Africa Free Groove band music and the singing of both the German and U.S. National Anthems. Eskelson and the local mayors closed the event with an official proclamation signing and cake cutting. The event also received regional recognition. Hans-Jürgen Noss, a member of the state parliament of Rheinland-Pfalz, Gunther Jung, Baumholder’s city mayor and county representatives were present.

“This sponsorship is not just a contract on paper, but a living

promise. We will use this opportunity to further and deepen our friendship and strengthen the bridges of understanding and cultural exchange,” said Altekrüger.

According to Eskelson, the new partnership opens the doors not only to official partnering events but also gives Soldiers a chance to become more engaged in the culture of Germany.

“The three towns we honor

today, Hanhweiler, Rohrback and Rückweiler are more than just places on a map. They represent vibrant communities filled with history, culture and tradition and it is an immense privilege for us to be welcomed into them,” she said.

“As we move forward with this partnership, it is our hope that it will illuminate, for so many, why Germany is such a special place to live and serve,” Eskelson said.

USAG RP strengthens law enforcement ties at Bad Dürkheim Wine Festival

The world's largest wine festival offered more than just Weinschorle, bratwursts and rides this year.

U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz’s law enforcement division, under the Directorate of Emergency Services, participated in joint security operations with local German Polizei, German federal agencies, the 92nd Military Police Company and the Air Force’s 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron during the Bad Dürkheim Wurstmarkt (Wine Festival) on weekends from Sept. 6 to 16 to safeguard the community and festival goers.

“With a festival attracting over 600,000 visitors from around the world annually, to include many Americans, it's our responsibility to provide support to our German police counterparts at both the local and federal levels in a combined and partnered effort to protect our shared communities,” said Master Sgt. Witer Gonzalez, NCOIC for DES. “We’ve patrolled the wine festival alongside German police for over a decade, and we will continue this partnership for many years to come,” he added.

The Bad Dürkheim Wurstmarkt is an annual event, typically held between the first and third weeks of September. DES law enforcement teams traditionally conduct joint operations there every weekend in collaboration with the Kaiserslautern Gaustraße Polizei. These operations focus on dismounted patrols aimed at crime prevention, expanding patrols beyond the Altstadt (old city) to other areas of the Stadtzentrum (city centers) where a series of larcenies involving unsecured private and government vehicles have been reported in the past.

Over 20 DES law enforcement personnel provided critical support during the event this year. In recognition of this collaboration, the Neustadt Polizei Director, Harald Brock, extended an inaugural invitation to USAG Rheinland-Pfalz DES leadership, who were joined by leadership from the 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron.

Round-the-clock operations

The primary benefit of these joint/partnered operations is the enhanced protection of the entire community, including civilians, host nation locals and military members. Through community policing and proactive crime prevention, the aim is to prevent military and civilian community members from becoming victims or offenders. Additionally, DES and its

partners gain valuable opportunities to increase interoperability by exchanging tactics, techniques and procedures, adopting those that enhance the standard operating procedures.

When not patrolling the festival grounds during the Bad Dürkheim Wurstmarkt, DES continues to collaborate with Kaiserslautern and other local Polizei, with a focus on

crime prevention and total force/ community protection.

DES coordinates daily with local Polizei, the 92nd Military Police Company and the 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron to synch up security operations across all areas of responsibility.

“The safety and security of our communities is our top priority, always,” said Lt. Col. David Castillo,

director and garrison provost marshal for emergency services. “By working together with our Polizei partners, the Air Force and our community members — to proactively address and provide protection — we create a safer environment for everyone. At the end of the day, it’s about protecting our most valuable resource — our people,” added Castillo.

Safeguarding the community is an “all hands-on deck” effort and every DoD-sponsored individual serves as a vital sensor. If you see something, say something and report it immediately to the garrison’s military police desk by dialing 1-1-0 (Germany) or 1-1-2 (Europe) from any phone to connect with emergency services.

31st Annual Multinational Military Medical Engagement in Poland strengthens allied, partner nation relations

More than 200 military and civilian medical experts from 16 allied and partner nations, including senior Polish military medical officials, gathered in Wroclaw, Poland Sep. 16–18 for the 31st Annual Multinational Military Medical Engagement.

Jointly hosted by U.S. Army Medical Readiness Command, Europe, 68th Theater Medical Command and the Polish Ministry of Defense and Polish Department of Military Medical Services, the theme for this year's multinational military medical engagement was, “Strengthening Military Medical Partnerships through Synergistic Collaboration.”

This year’s engagement offered a three-day multinational dynamic program consisting of plenary sessions, breakout sessions and exhibitions aimed to improve interoperability and collaborate on challenges and opportunities currently faced by the military medical community in Europe.

According to event planners, this year’s military medical engagement in Poland was an absolute success, and they were pleased with the support and cooperation offered by allied and partner nations that took part.

“The annual Multinational Military Medical Engagement bolsters international partnerships among our NATO and partner nations,” said Dr. John Casey, glob-

al health engagements program manager for Medical Readiness Command, Europe.

With approximately 250 participants taking part, attendees came from the United States, Poland, United Kingdom, France, Hungary, Ukraine, Netherlands,

Switzerland, Denmark, Lithuania, Norway, Georgia, Federal Republic of Germany, Sweden, Belgium, and Croatia.

“This multinational military medical engagement strengthens international partnerships by fostering professional collabo-

ration and improving interoperability in military medicine across our NATO allies and partners,” said U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Roger Giraud, commander of Medical Readiness Command, Europe. ”As a result, we are all stronger together.”

Giraud, who is also the U.S. Army Europe and Africa command surgeon and director of Defense Health Network Europe, added, “Additionally, it served as a platform for our NATO allies and partners and our medical experts to exchange insights, share experiences, and address common challenges. It was also a unique opportunity to build relationships, make new friends, and create lasting professional connections. These relationships are key in any future combat operation.”

The three-day military medical engagement consisted primarily of breakout sessions on a variety of medical topics including patient evacuation, force health protection, behavioral health practices and emerging threats of infectious disease in the operational environment.

“Our goal this week was to achieve synergistic collaboration across our allies and partners,” added Giraud. “We focused on improving medical interoperability

and collaboration on the challenges and opportunities faced by the military medical enterprise here in Europe. We also took a close look at battlefield care and the medical lessons learned there so that our formations are combat ready.”

Also in attendance at this year’s multinational military medical engagement was distinguished guest, U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Mary Izaguirre, surgeon general for the United States Army.

“These type medical engagements are critical for several reasons,” said Izaguirre. “The first is to build trust - that is the foundation of all we do, both in the military as well as in medicine. Second, it allows us to collaborate. It's important for us to be able to learn together, to train together and to develop doctrine together, so that as we prepare to be able to fight together, we have the best advantage. And finally, there’s interoperability. As we develop this interoperability ahead of time, it allows us to understand each other’s systems to develop a common language, and then to combine our best practices for the benefit of the Soldiers.”

Planning for the 32nd Annual MMME event is already underway. The date and location for that event have yet to be determined.

Senior U.S. Army medical leaders conduct a key leader engagement with leaders of the Ukraine Medical Forces. More than 200 military and civilian medical experts from 16 allied and partner nations, including senior Polish military medical officials, gathered for the 31st Annual Multinational Military Medical Engagement in Wroclaw, Poland, Sep. 16–18.

Public Health Command Europe hosts strategic off-site

Public Health Command Europe hosted a three-day strategic off-site at the Sembach Community Activity Center, Sep. 10–12

More than 35 military and civilian personnel attended the conference to build cohesion, exchange knowledge and align mission effectiveness and success.

Medical Readiness Command, Europe commanding General Roger Giraud provided opening remarks which highlighted the importance of the collective effort to meet mission goals and enable readiness across the theater.

“What I want you to focus on in the next fiscal year is the collective effort. Can your team do what it needs to do to successfully execute the mission?,” said Giraud. “I encourage you to plan collaboratively and not parallel. It takes everyone in this room and beyond to converge our capabilities to get the mission done.”

During the three-day event PHCE leadership discussed leadership philosophies and applications that promote the development of daily practices to increase PHCE’s effectiveness at accomplishing the unit’s mission and tasks at every echelon in form of leader-

ship development programs, group discussions and tabletop exercises. Among leadership, a selected

few junior Soldiers had the opportunity to attend “to gain a different perspective and understand why

we are doing what we are doing” according to PHCE commander Col. Paul Lang.

“We often have a group of senior leaders in the room who are expected to have all the answers,” said Lang. “It is beneficial to have junior Soldiers in attendance that are able to give us their input based on their daily, hands-on experience in the field.”

Spc. Eva-Marie Howells, veterinary technician at Veterinary Medical Center Europe, attended the off-site for the first time.

“Being in the Army for only 18 months, I don’t know a lot of things that I don’t know yet,” said Howells. “I believe anytime you have a networking opportunity, you should take it because you can get something valuable out of it.”

Public Health Command Europe is responsible for providing comprehensive military public health programs in support of garrisons, training areas, and contingency/combat forces operating in the EUCOM, CENTCOM and AFRICOM areas of operation to sustain force health protection and readiness. Those programs include medical entomology, environmental health engineering, food and water sanitation, veterinary care, industrial hygiene and occupational health, and preventive medicine readiness planning and training.

Landstuhl Regional Medical Center plays major role in global health engagement

Landstuhl Regional Medical Center’s global health engagement team recently supported U.S. Africa Command as they travelled to the African country of Angola to conduct a subject matter expert exchange with the health division of the Armed Forces for Angola, Aug. 19–23.

The two teams met to discuss advanced medical skills required for rapid response during emerging disease outbreaks with the goal of increasing interoperability regarding outbreak management, surveillance, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

“We discussed in detail a myriad of preventative medicine practices, outbreak best practices, and lessons learned, including COVID-19, malaria, and yellow fever,” said Col. Claude Burnett, LRMC’s global health engagement and clinical readiness director.

According to attendees, both teams benefited from the exchange, learning from one another in

addressing healthcare issues, as well as shared challenges and response strategy to COVID-19 faced by U.S. and Angolan military care providers.

“While scale, resources, and outcomes of the COVID-19 responses differed significantly, the similarities underscore common public health strate-

gies between the two countries,” added Burnett. “We look forward to future engagements to continue collaboration with Angola, to advance interconnectedness and

public health strategy alignment, further ensuring coordinated efforts to prevent outbreaks and containment.”

For resource constrained countries like Angola, these exchanges mean not only enhancing the readiness of their forces, but also improving the health outcome of its citizens.

According to Lt. Gen. Alberto De Almeida, Angolan Armed Forces director of health services, 90 percent of the COVID-19 response in Angola fell to its military’s medical forces.

“This exchange event with Angola highlights the critical importance of partnerships with our allies, partner nations, and friends to collaborate on disease management response,” said U.S. Army Maj. Tanya Bolden, LRMC’s global health engagement and clinical readiness deputy director. “One of the key elements achieved from this engagement was shared knowledge to improve real-time preparedness of emerging infectious diseases and enhanced interoperability between both nations.”

Airmen, Guardians cycle 340 miles to honor DAF heritage

More than 200 Airmen and Guardians, past and present, rode in the Air Force Heritage Memorial to Memorial bicycle ride, which started at the Wright Brothers Memorial in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, Sept. 12, and concluded at the Air Force Memorial in Arlington, Sep. 15.

The four-day M2M bike ride, organized by the Air Force Cycling Team, brought members together to celebrate the heritage of the Air Force and Space Force, promote fitness and recruiting, and support

wounded service members.

Riders included Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Allvin; retired Gen. David Goldfein, the 21st CSAF; Chief Master Sgt. of the Space Force John Bentivegna; and retired Chief Master Sgt. James Roy, the 16th Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force.

Allvin, who participated on the last day, led riders to the Air Force Memorial, where he acknowledged the importance of heritage, teamwork and fitness, and recognized the participants who trekked more than 340 miles together.

“Coming back here is a perfect end to this four-day ride,” Allvin

said. “But (while riding) I saw more things when I think about celebrating our heritage and the things that make us who we are as an Air Force. I saw the teamwork that’s required for an Air Force to be successful. I didn’t see a lot of single riders by themselves. They were always with wingmen coaching them, helping them, sometimes mentoring them.”

The riders gathered during the closing ceremony, which included a recognition and awards presentation.

Lt. Col. Ryan Natalini, a member of the Air Force Cycling Team, joined the bike ride with his wife,

Lt. Col. Amy Natalini. He said the Memorial-to-Memorial bicycle ride was a great event and a great opportunity to experience what the East Coast has to offer while doing something he and his wife love to do.

“It’s four days with a whole bunch of your sisters and brothers, 340 miles from the Wright Brothers Memorial to [the] Air Force Memorial. What cooler thing can we do as Airmen and Guardians, right?” Natalini said.

Tim Blaisdell said that even though he is no longer in the Air Force, he felt the camaraderie with all the participants, including all the currently serving Air Force and Space Force military, retired and separated members.

“You feel that bond of community again,” he said.

The M2M bike ride, which was a brainchild of retired Brig. Gen. Robert Beletic, former vice commander of 1st Air Force (Air Forces Northern), and Goldfein, began in 2022 to celebrate the Air Force’s 75th anniversary.

“Tapping in our heritage, our camaraderie with each other, it gave me an opportunity to spend four days with my wife out on the road and enjoy each other’s company.”

and Spc.

On Sep. 11, firefighters and military personnel gathered at the Fritz Walter Stadium here to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, which claimed the lives of 2,763 individuals, including 343 New York City firefighters.

The event featured a stair run designed to honor those who perished while responding to the crisis.

The stair run involved participants climbing a total of 2,071 steps, symbolizing the height of the Twin Towers. Firefighters from Ramstein Air Base, Sembach Kaserne, and various local fire departments joined forces with U.S. and German military personnel, including air defenders from 10th Army Air & Missile Defense Command and the 52D Air Defense Artillery Brigade. Together, they completed 30 loops of the east stand of the stadium,

which has a seating capacity of 50,000.

The event began with a moment of silence to honor the victims and first responders. As the whistle signaled the start of the climb, participants started climbing the stands, each step serving as a reminder of the bravery exhibited by those who rushed into danger on September 11, 2001.

Many participants agreed that the climb was not just about physical endurance; it’s about remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

As the climbers approached the final steps, cheers erupted from the crowd, creating an atmosphere of solidarity and remembrance.

The event concluded with a sense of unity among the participants, reinforcing the importance of remembering the sacrifices made by first responders. The legacy of the heroes of September 11 continues to inspire current and future generations of firefighters and emergency personnel.

OCT. 3, 11 A.M. TO EVENING, ZELL/MOSELLE

This year, the popular hiking event “Gieh roff of dat Häisje” will once again take place in the vineyard above the town of Zell. Hike on the Collis circular trail via Collis to Lönshöhe or on the “Zeller Schwarze Katz” theme trail (Karpertchenweg) to Rommeneyweg or directly on the Collissteig up to Collis. You will come across “Häisje” everywhere, where you can enjoy selected wines from the “Zeller Schwarze Katz” and be served various delicacies. Start and end your hike in the wine lounge on the market square by the “Zeller Schwarze Katz” fountain with a glass of sparkling wine or Riesling wine from the “Zeller Schwarzen Katz”. Guests are advised to park in the designated parking spaces on the banks of the Moselle and not on the vineyard paths! Many winegrowers are already harvesting grapes! The hosts await you from 11:00 a.m. Enjoy the wonderful view of the lovely Moselle valley and let your soul unwind!

KESCHDEFESCHD (CHESTNUT FESTIVAL)

OCT. 5-6, ANNWEILER/TRIFELS

Chestnuts, chestnuts and even more chestnuts! The Keschdefeschd is a must-see and taste for all fans of the fruit and go nuts! Local vendors will offer dishes and products from and with chestnuts, such as sweet and savory variations, chestnut cream, chestnut liqueur, chestnut honey, chestnut flatbread, chestnut mustard and chestnut bread. And, if that’s not nutty enough, march up the hill to visit Trifels Castle, where English King Richard the Lion Heart was held captive in the late 12th century.

ABC IN KMC: Tag der Deutschen Einheit

Oct. 3 marks the 34th anniversary of the reunification of the Federal Republic of Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

Based on the Potsdam Agreement signed in August 1945 at the end of World War II, Germany was divided into four sectors governed by the United States, Great Britain and France in the West and the Soviet Union in the East of the country.

The Federal Republic of Germany, commonly referred to as West Germany, was established on May 23, 1949, with Bonn being the provisional capital. The foundation of the German Democratic Republic, often called East Germany, followed on Oct. 7.

West Germany was comprised of 11 individual states and quickly prospered with an open market economic system. East Germany, with its five states, relied on a planned and government directed economy under Soviet rule. Although they shared a common history, the people of Germany lived in a divided nation for the next forty years. Families were torn apart, some living in the West and other family members being restricted from leaving East Germany. Up to 2.5 million East Germans secretly fled Soviet rule to seek freedom and build new lives in the West.

The city of Berlin was also divided into four sectors and on Aug. 13,

1961, East German authorities began erecting a barrier around the western part of the city (West Berlin), engulfing the Brandenburger Tor (gate). The Brandenburg gate quickly became a symbol of the nation’s division. At first it was merely a barbed wire fence guarded by the East German national army, but over the years it grew to a total length of 75 miles of concrete blocks, up to 15 feet tall, topped with barbed wire, surrounding West Berlin and also dividing the city straight through the middle. In many instances the structure was erected as a double wall with a “death strip” of 100 yards in between the rows of blocks.

Several checkpoints were established between the zones, the most famous being “Checkpoint Charlie,” as an entry point between the Soviet and American sectors. As many as 200 people are said to have lost their lives attempting to flee East Berlin. At the same time, further walls were erected between the East and West German borders and only three transit routes allowed for vehicle travel to Berlin, which was located in the middle of the German Democratic Republic.

A group of young West Berliners, who called themselves “Mauerspechte” (literally wall sparrows), frequently set out to the wall near Brandenburger Tor with hammers and chisels. There they chiseled away small parts of the wall, symbolically tearing it down piece by piece.

By the late 1980s, East Germans became increasingly discontent with the overall political situation, government

directed economic mismanagement, little to no personal freedom and strict travel restrictions. In a series of peaceful “Monday demonstrations” in Leipzig and other major cities over months, the protestors vividly chanted “Wir sind das Volk!” (We are the people), eventually forcing the government to back down and surprisingly announce the opening of the border on the evening of Nov. 9, 1989. The overwhelmed guards at Bornholmer Strasse near Brandenburg Gate let East Berliners through without checking identities. The news spread like a wildfire and West Berliners greeted their Eastern counterparts in a warm welcome with champagne and flowers at or even on the wall!

After eleven months of negotiations between the two states, the reunification was formally completed in 1990 and Oct. 3 was declared as a German national holiday to celebrate the occasion. Berlin again rapidly became the capital of all 16 states, despite more than half of all Berliners disagreeing to the this sudden decision. In the following years, Berlin became Germany’s largest construction site and most of the federal ministries, parliamentarians and government leaders moved into offices next to the Reichstag, the German parliament. Its cupola, which can be visited upon prior registration, was completed in 1999.

In the meantime, Berlin has grown back into one city and the differences between West and East Berlin are hardly noticeable. It offers many sites to

see, for example, Checkpoint Charlie, Brandenburger Tor, the government area, the East Side Gallery and many more. Berlin is a bustling city and definitely worth a visit during your stay in the Kaiserslautern Military Community. Don’t miss out on a relaxing boat tour on the Spree River along numerous famous sites!

Anniversary events take place every year in rotating cities throughout Germany. Schwerin, the capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, in the east along the Baltic Sea coast will be the host this year. Schwerin is famous for its picturesque castle, beautiful castle gardens and Hanseatic atmosphere, and is looking forward to a long weekend of celebrations. Next year, Saarbrücken in our neighbor state Saarland, will host the festivities.

One original block of the Berlin Wall was moved to the traffic circle at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center on Ramstein Air Base, in 2021. The section of the wall was preserved and set in place by airmen from the 86th Civil Engineer Group, with the western side with colorful graffiti symbolizing free “West Germany” and the backside the former East German state.

On Thursday, Oct. 3, all public offices and stores in Germany will be closed in observance of the holiday. Many Germans will also take leave on Friday to create a long weekend, so things may be at a slower pace around the Kaiserslautern Military Community.

GACO CORNER: FEEL AT HOME IN THE KMC

A warm welcome from the GACO! You are in Germany now and are probably looking to make yourself at home as soon as possible. In a different culture, different rules apply and different authorities deal with different requests, and you might need help dealing with it all.

One of the things that is hard to navigate as a foreigner is Germany’s bureaucracy. However, you do not need to feel at a loss because help is near: The German-American Community Office in Kaiserslautern is THE drop-in point for all your questions regarding life in Germany.

The GACO has been a unique point of contact with most valuable information for all citizens in the Kaiserslautern Military Community since 19 February 2003. Since then, over 47,000 inquiries from Germans, Americans or individuals of other nationality have been answered.

After having arrived in Germany, you will certainly have a lot of questions about life overseas. The bilingual staff at the GACO will help you in every way possible — from finding the right POC at the local administration responsible for your matter, to helping understand German cultural

matters, to providing support with traffic issues and many more.

Most inquiries deal with questions such as how to obtain a German or international driver’s license, marrying in Germany, visarelated issues, pet importation rules and recycling regulations — as you can see there are regulations for almost everything over here.

German customers contact the GACO with their questions on the U.S. military presence in the KMC, looking to get in touch with American clubs, to get help communicating with their neighbors, to find their long-lost American family and to inquire about base visits, to name a few.

Beside supporting military and civilian members of the Kaiserslautern Military

Community, the GACO-team provides information to high-ranking visitors from Ramstein Air Base, the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz, the Kaiserslautern city and county administration as well as Rheinland-Pfalz state government representatives. It serves as an important linking point for the German and U.S. side. This makes the GACO the only facility of its kind world-wide. The staff has developed an extensive network of contacts within the local administration, businesses and associations.

The GACO is also an official cooperation partner of the “Welcome to RheinlandPfalz” (WIR!) initiative, a program that is sponsored by the Rheinland-Pfalz state government to provide much-needed information in English about regional events and services in the participating villages to help you get settled quickly in your local area. About

the castle

Situated high on a mountaintop, this formidable, breathtaking fortress welcomes you from miles away. And it has an equally impressive history. Hohenzollern Castle dates back to 1061, and that isn’t a misprint. The castle remains the ancestral seat of the “Prussian” dynasty, which was an essential component of this area before Germany become the country we know today. The family line intersects and expands through the Franconian and Swabian lines. If you love history, this is a castle for you.

The family lineage is documented on the walls of the entrance to the main castle, which is quite a site to see. Crown Prince Frederick William led a massive restoration effort in the mid-19th century, and the results were an enduring architectural masterpiece.

The castle is still used today. When Prince Georg Friedrich and his family are “in-residence,” the flag will fly from the tower to let the villagers below know they are there. This a tradition that dates back for centuries.

Taking the royal stroll

The castle grounds, and most everything included within it is open daily (unless otherwise noted on the castle website) from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Self-guided tours are available, and museum staff are on hand in every room to answer questions. I once worked as a docent in a historical museum and love it when museums take pride in keeping everything as historically accurate as possible. One of my favorite little

notes on this trip was wearing the “big fluffy slippers.” You will be asked to slip these on to preserve the absolutely gorgeous floors. Be sure to remember to look down as there are different marble and inlaid wood floors throughout the palace.

Not to be missed is the treasury The royal Crown of Prussia was there as well as many other treasures including presents from other royal families, fine china and silver.

Eat, drink and be merry

We had wonderful weather for our touring day and decided to eat like royalty. We enjoyed a perfect German lunch at the Café Restaurant Burg Hohenzollern and then later coffee and cake in the castle beer garden. Whether you prefer a sit-down meal or to grab a snack or cake, this castle has an option for both. The views from the garden are unforgettable. Hohenzollern aerial view

Other information

Once you arrive at the Burg Hohenzollern parking lot, there is a steep hike to the main castle. A shuttle bus is available and runs every 15 minutes. If you have little ones or someone who wouldn’t like to hike, you should use this very convenient service. The price of parking and the shuttle bus is included in the castle admission fee. Advance tickets are available for purchase online.

The castle has a few very nice gift stores. The staff is very friendly and some speak English, like Maria who helped us with our tickets and getting started. You can purchase regional specialties, including Bärlauch Vinegar and Kümmel schnapps.
