THE MAGIC OF KAISERSLAUTERN’S
by Nate Cairney contributing writer
A staple of Kaiserslautern for nearly 25 years, the Japanese Garden (Japanischer Garten) is one of the city’s best-kept secrets. Though a quiet natural oasis, the Japanese Garden is anything but boring. Filled with gorgeous flora, clear ponds, lovely waterfalls, and mazelike paths, it allows visitors to find peace or adventure.
Where TikTok meets tranquility
It is a weekday afternoon in late spring Storm clouds gather to the west, and sun filters in through the leaves of a massive beech tree The sound of rushing water comes from somewhere beyond a curved ridge I have just finished picking my way over a railing-less wooden bridge where koi dart in the pond water below German voices come from behind a Japanese maple I round a corner And boom: in one of the most tranquil places in Germany, two dyed-hair teenage TikTok skateboard stars are setting up a camera Kaiserslautern’s Japanese Garden is about to become Internet-famous, at least for one fleeting moment The beautiful thing? No one seems to mind After all, a Japanese garden encourages contemplation of a deeper sense of time: all things pass, even TikTok
Kaiserslautern’s Japanese Garden:
A brief history
The largest of its kind in Germany, Kaiserslautern’s Japanese Garden was founded in 2000, three years after a local association (called “Friends of the Japanese Garden”) began working to assure its existence
Since then, the garden has continued to expand and thrive
A new gate was opened in 2006, to accompany the arrival of the Japanese national soccer team in Kaiserslautern (where they gave up three heartbreaking goals in the last 10 minutes of their match against Australia to lose 3-1)
During the past three years, both the iconic red entrance gate and the red pedestrian bridge have been renovated The result of nearly a quarter-century of work? An amazing place to visit – for people of all ages
A welcoming place
The whole goal of Japanese gardens is to allow visitors to understand that humans are part of nature Kaiserslautern’s garden does this in a number of ways
First of all, the space itself is barrier-free The paths aren’t straight, and are all connected Which means visitors get to choose their own adventure You can navigate huge stepping stones and walk straight through the large red gate just beyond the entrance You can also amble leftward toward the base of two large ponds where shiny golden koi swim beneath the surface
Secondly, the garden is perfect – and open for – any number of events or non-events Benches are everywhere, so visitors can sit, listen, reflect, or chat Cosplay events are a staple of the garden, and have been hosted there for nearly a decade The afternoon I visited, six book clubbers were having a champagne picnic There were, of course, the aforementioned skateboard-wielding teenagers doing their best to blow minds by doing rad tricks inside a Japanese garden Mostly, there were visitors like me who were turned briefly into searchers and wanderers
Finally, Kaiserslautern’s Japanese Garden poses options and challenges for visitors of all ages Kids will love it There are many maze-like patterns, and a surprisingly rugged terrain: the garden is located more or less on a hillside with a 60-foot elevation difference, so some of the walking can be strenuous for those with limited mobility And those who aren’t quite up for vertical exploring will be pleased, too There is much to see and do at the bottom of the hill
Harmony between nature and structure
Even non-tree nerds will appreciate the vegetation in the Japanese garden Ancient and enormous beeches tower throughout the garden, their presence a nod to Germany’s most famous trees The garden contains yew, gingko, and Japanese maple trees, as well as bamboo Flowers and other plants flourish As the seasons change, the garden evolves beautifully Spring is filled with pinks, autumn with reds and oranges, winter with unexpected greens
There are also amazing structures within the garden, including an authentic Japanese tea house that was originally built in Tokyo in 1900 and ended up in Kaiserslautern a century later Multiple bridges crisscross the water features, including a curved red bridge that overlooks a 40-foot waterfall, and a stone bridge that allows visitors to tiptoe across a small pond just beyond the red gate And, if anyone gets hungry, you can visit the snack bar (the Japanese Imbiss) Or, like many do, you can bring your own snacks
GARDEN
Kaiserslautern Japanese Garden –essentials
From May to September, the garden is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am to 7 pm Tickets cost €6 50 for visitors ages 12 and older Children 11 and under are free Due to the delicate nature of the landscape, dogs are not allowed
Though open year-round, hours are limited during the winter
Please visit https://www japanischergarten de/besuchen/oeffnungszeiten-preise for specific visiting times
Located downtown, next to a tall county administration building, the Japanese Garden is very accessible via public transportation If you’re driving, parking spots are generally available at the nearby Meuthstrasse lot If you’re in the Fussganger zone, it’s a short (5-10 minute) walk away, as well

DOCTORS RECOMMEND SUNSCREEN
FOR ALL SKIN COMPLEXIONS
by Janet A. Aker Medical Health System Communications
Individuals with darker skin complexions, or skin of color, are sometimes less likely to use sunscreens and protect themselves from excessive sunlight, dermatologists say. But the dangers of too much sunlight — from sunspots to skin cancer — are real risks for everyone regardless of skin complexion, doctors say.
Researchdoes show that melanin, the natural pigments that affect skin tone, confer some natural protection against the risk of skin cancers caused by the ultraviolet rays in sunlight
But everyone, of any complexion, is still at risk for sun-related skin cancers
And aside from cancer, some other sun exposure risks and potential skin problems are actually more common in people with darker skin tones
“More important to me, and my skin of color patients, is the increased risk of pigmentary issues,” said Navy Lt Cmdr (Dr ) James Contestable, a dermatologist from Camp Lejeune Naval Medical Center, North Carolina
“Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, brown spots, and melasma are more common in skin of color For this reason, I recommend high-quality zinc oxides, iron oxides (found in tinted sunblock), and sun blocks that contain antioxidants and free radical quenchers,” he said
Hyperpigmentation is among the most common reasons darker skinned people seek the care of a dermatologist, according to the National Institutes of Health
Ultraviolet and infrared radiation from the sun is key in making melasma worse, experts say
“The role of UVA and visible spectrum light in the development of pigmentary issues has come into focus over the past decade,” Contestable noted
“Zinc provides broad UVA protection, and iron oxides provide good visible spectrum light protection Finally, tinted sun blocks offer the advantage of avoiding the dreaded pasty white cast that can reduce adherence to sunscreens, specifically in the skin of color
population,” he commented
Contestable recommends the use of sunscreens that contain both a transparent “chemical” sunscreen and a broad spectrum “physical” blocker of UV rays like zinc oxide because of their “synergistic effect ”
Misperceptions
A recent study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found that individuals with darker skin complexions are less likely to use sunscreens and practice other behaviors despite having experienced sunburns, which can be a precursor to skin cancer
There are continuing misconceptions about the need for people with skin of color to use sunscreen daily and to stay out of the sun and wear protective clothing, and sunglasses like lighter skinned people are advised to do, according to experts
Some individuals with skin of color are unaware of the need for photoprotection to protect against skin cancer due to the belief that their naturally dark skin tone is more capable of providing protection against skin damage from sun exposure, the study suggests
Use sunscreen daily
Some people with desk jobs don’t feel they need to use sunscreen or sun blockers daily because they are not out in the sun much Contestable’s answer to that?
“UVA and visible light pass through windows Visible light is produced by our lighting fixtures inside, including computer screens and cell phones Therefore, sunscreen still has a role even when indoors ”
“This is especially important in those who have pigmentary disorders such as melasma or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation ”
“I also say: How did you get to work? You typically have to walk from the car to the office, and every bit of sun protection helps”
SPF Level?
Contestable said he believes the target SPF level “should be the same for all skin types ”
“There is a hotly debated issue” about sunscreens with higher SPFs, Contestable said
“Some experts will say that SPF 30 blocks 97 percent of UVB rays, ‘so why use a higher SPF?’ Their opinion is that with higher
SPF, there is less overall gain as SPF 50 blocks 98 percent of UVB rays and SPF 100, 99 percent,” he said
For patients of all skin tones, Contestable recommends anywhere from SPF 30 to SPF 100 because “it doesn’t cost much more to get the higher SPF”
Secondly, “in real-world use, we know that most people only apply 25-50 percent of the amount of sunscreen needed to achieve the SPF on the label My hope is that if someone applies half the amount of SPF 50 then they may achieve SPF 25, and there is some research that supports this linear relationship ”
Most people should just find a sunscreen that they like — and will use! Those with specific skin concerns or skin problems should get a personalized sunscreen and sun protection plan from their dermatologist, Contestable recommends
DISCOVER EUROPE WITH YOUR DOG
by Marion Rhodes contributing writer
Instead of accompanying their owners to faraway places, our canine companions habitually spend their vacations at a boarding kennel or with a dog sitter. But you don’t have to leave your pet behind to explore Europe. Look around and you are likely to find dogs in restaurants, on trains, and on the beach.
Every country is different
Most are very dog friendly, and taking furry friends along may actually be easier than trying to find a place for them to stay behind There are various websites, like www hundeurlaub de, that make finding and booking a dog friendly accommodation easy
Dogs are generally allowed to roam on the beaches but some countries restrict their beaches during the main travel season in July and August During that time, dog owners are asked to seek out specially designated beaches where their pets may roam and play
Eastern Europe is also rather dogfriendly, but dogs are often seen as working
and guard dogs and might be treated differently Tuscany and Croatia are also good destinations for traveling with dogs
In southern Europe, dog owners may have more difficulty finding dog friendly hotels and beaches Unlike in the northern countries, restaurants in the south usually limit dogs to outside patios
A tricky country is Denmark Although the people there are very friendly toward dogs, the law is not Dogs resembling one of the restricted dog breeds might get confiscated and euthanized
When booking a hotel, travelers need to announce their intention to bring a dog in advance, even if the hotel says it allows dogs If the hotel’s website doesn’t state whether dogs are allowed, you can just call and ask before making a reservation Hotels do tend to charge an extra cleaning fee
Regulations for dogs in Europe
For any travel abroad, dogs need to have a microchip implant That chip needs to adhere to the European standard, otherwise the owner needs to take along a proper chip scanner Dogs also have to have a current rabies vaccination that needs to be noted in an EU pet passport, which is available at any German vet
Although rabies is the only required vaccine for entering a European country, there may be other suggested vaccines to protect pets from foreign viruses, so it is worth checking with a veterinarian beforehand
For more information on entrance requirements, such as antibody tests to avoid quarantine, visit the portal site of the European Union.
Road trips are particularly pup-friendly When traveling by car don’t forget that Germany’s law requires dogs in cars to be secured in either a kennel or with a seatbelt or safety net
If a dog gets car sick, withholding food before the trip may help
Plan on making a stop at least every three hours and give the dog plenty of water Older or sick dogs should be checked by a vet before going on any trip However, even if the car ride takes a bit longer due to more stops, for most dogs, staying at a kennel is more stressful than a four- or five-hour car ride
So next time you plan a trip, take a bit of time and find a place where your best friend can accompany you You won’t regret it
A WEEKENDER’S GUIDE TO BAMBERG THE BOLD, THE BEAUTIFUL AND THE BACON
by Dr. Krystal White contributing writer
A three hour drive from the KMC brings travelers to one of the most quaint German towns in the country. Old timbered houses, colorful facades, friendly water canals, and some of the most delicious beer you’ll drink await you.
Located in Bavaria, Bamberg is one of the few cities in Germany that was not destroyed by World War II bombings A nearby German artillery factory prevented planes from getting near Bamberg, and therefore many spectacular buildings were spared from ruin The architecture is simply gorgeous and pleasant Medieval- to baroque-era buildings nestled along the water offer superb photography shots or a simple summer stroll More than 3,000 buildings comprise this very pleasing town, now a UNESCO world heritage site
A sunny Saturday morning offers
weekenders a quaint farmers market Don’t worry if you find yourself there during the week as the market is held six days a week
At this market you will find some of the best tasting honey in the area, as well as farm fresh eggs, produce and cheese
Bamberg is also home to eleven breweries: Brauerei Fässla, Brauerei Greifenklau, Brauerei Schlenkerla, Brauerei Kaiserdom, Brauerei Keesmann, Klosterbräu, Mahrs-Bräu and Brauerei Spezial It is also home to one brewpub, Ambräusianum In a city with a population of over 70,000, the residents are ensured to have easy
Bamberg is famous for its bacon beer, called “Rauchbier.”

and entertaining access to quality beer and a jovial atmosphere
Hundreds of years ago, many beers were prepared in the same environment where meat was smoked, giving it a very particular flavor The grain, usually something like barley, was smoked over fires to dry until the 1700s
The procedures were lost with the Industrial Age, but now, the German town of Bamberg fans the flame of tradition by producing a beer worthy of worship with its own special “rauchmalz” (beechwood smoked malt)
If you ask a handful of locals or read a few beer enthusiasts’ blogs, they will say Aecht Schlenkerla is the best smoked beer in the world This tried and true method of researching has yet to fail, and from the moment a visitor enters Schlenkerla, he or she will feel a bit like they’ve stumbled upon local gold
The tavern occupies a building first mentioned in 1405, and its low timbered ceilings and dark wood reflect the high sun of a
summer’s day with welcoming ease
The dark, chestnut beer tastes a bit like maple and the subtle woodiness of smoked meat The weiss (light) smoked beer tastes assertive and tangy
With a hint of tobacco, this beer is easy to settle down with after a trying day
The word “Schlenkerla” means to “shake, like when drinking,” or literally, I learned later, “to dangle ”
And the beer lives up to its name If most Franconians are considered reserved, then Schlenkerla shakes their inhibitions loose a bit
This beer smokes the competition Grab your best bud and head to Bamberg soon!

SUMMER ON BOSTALSEE
by Ronnie Juhans contributing writer
Camping in Germany is considered a bit restrictive based on what a lot of campers coming from the U.S. are used to. Tent or wild camping, while carrying a light load of gear and finding a secluded location in the forest, is a great adventure. However, it is not allowed in most areas especially nature preserve areas or in national parks no matter how large they are.
Some people risk it by being stealthy and setting up a small area for a night or two with a small tent or shelter The one or two nights that you spend can add up to a costly camping trip if you are stumbled upon by the Forest Meister or locals that report you Fines can be very steep and if you make a campfire you can expect a lot worse
German campgrounds are an inexpensive way to enjoy the Summer camping season without the risk of legal fees and having your weekend cut short They are also a great place to meet the locals, while still getting back to nature because many are located next to rivers, streams, lakes, and hiking areas
One of my favorite campsites is located at the Bostalsee, which is the largest recreational lake in this area, and one of the best hidden one-day vacation spots that is only 40 minutes from the KMC, and even closer to Baumholder A quick trip on A62 direction Trier and taking the Tuerkismuehle exit leads you to the brown signs for the Bostalsee and Center Parc recreation areas You have many options for an amazing day, weekend or longer adventures for singles traveling with friends or the entire family
If you go for a camping weekend or only have time for a one-day adventure on the Bostalsee there are variety of options located around every side of the lake to suit your needs
Campingplatz Bostalsee is one of the best camping areas in this region that offers everything from quiet family spots, cabins, group camping with fire pits, and the group areas for the crowd that wants to camp, BBQ, party, chill out by bonfires, and get very little sleep while hanging out with backpackers and campers from all over Europe
Standard 220v electrical connections are available for 3 euro per day
However, you need to bring your own extension cord (the roll-up cords with 4 connections are the best)
There are also very clean and well-kept bathrooms, showers, dishwashing and laundry facilities on site At the main entrance is a bakery and coffee bistro that also has basic food / personal hygiene items and firewood for sale The nearest grocery store is only 2 kilometers away in case you happen to run out of major supplies
This may not seem like camping to some folks’ standards, but the amenities are common in German camping areas and come in handy when you don’t have to drive a long distance to restock All camping areas fill very quickly, and it is best to make reservations about two weeks prior to your arrival See camping dos and don’ts on the right
Center Parc is a resort on the other side of the lake that is a 45 minute hike on the lake trail or 5 minutes away by car, with restaurants, cafes, snack bars, bowling, game rooms, indoor/outdoor mini golf, playgrounds, petting zoo, zip line park, archery, equipment rental (bike, boat, quads, sailing, scuba) as well as a beach with picnic, BBQ areas, a beer garden, and a grocery store where you can pick up anything you need You can also book condos, and hike, bike or skate around the lake, or enjoy swimming at Aqua Mundo with indoor and outdoor heated pools and water slides
Find out more at www.centerparcs.de
Freizeitzentrum Bostalsee is located on the lake within walking distance of the campground There is a beach with picnic/ BBQ areas, a water slide that launches you into the lake, beach volleyball, soccer, football golf, trampolines, playgrounds, and a variety of food and drink vendors Bosiland located next to the parking area is an amazing recreation area for kids and adults that include bouncy houses, slides, go-carts, climbing as well as a snack bar and areas to reserve for birthday parties You can also rent paddle boats, bikes, go hiking, biking, skating, and jogging on trails around the lake During the Summer months, the Bostalsee is a venue for a variety of weekend music and multicultural events The biggest event of the summer is the Seefest which takes place July 27-28 Dogs are not allowed in the beach area www.bostalsee.de/en/
Seezeit Lodge Hotel & Spa and conference center is one of the many options available during your visit to the Bostalsee This amazing lakeside resort has amazing rooms, suites, spa areas, restaurant, conference centers, and hosts a variety of multicultural activities Situated high above the lake, the Seezeit has amazing views with easy access to all other facilities in the area
www.seezeitlodge-bostalsee.de/en/
Driving directions, GPS locations, and current events can be found on any of the websites listed.
& DOs DON’Ts
• Do call ahead to check if dogs are allowed on specific dates.
• Be respectful of quiet times especially in the family camping areas.
• Bring recycle bags to separate glass, paper, and residual waste. The recycle center is located next to the reception area.
• Make fires only in designated areas or use a grill to make a small fire at your site.
• Don’t try to check in between 1 to 3 p.m. The reception is closed for quiet time.
• Don’t invite unwanted animals and insects by leaving around dirty cookware or open food.
• Don’t make a fire close to bedtime and leave it smoldering for others to smell all night.
• Don’t allow your pets or children to run freely and disturb you camping neighbors.

HIGHLIGHTS OF HAMBURG:
WATER HISTORY
by MilitaryInGermany.com
Hamburg is one of Germany’s greatest cities. It offers water, history, and a nonstop itinerary of entertaining things to do.
A must-see while you’re in Deutschland!
1.
Port of Hamburg – Gateway to the World
The Port of Hamburg is situated in the Elbe River basin, only about 100 kilometers from the open sea Thousands of ships from all over the world call at Europe’s second largest port From the cruise ship terminal to the historic Speicherstadt and the jetties to the modern container port, it’s a fascinating, thriving area of industry around which the entire city of Hamburg has been built
It’s possible to take tours of the port by bus, but by far the best way to view it is from the water – on a boat There are numerous tour companies that offer harbor tours through the port, passing right by huge container ships, shipyards and container terminals
The port also hosts numerous museum ships offering tourists a unique way to learn more about the city’s shipping history Converted from former passenger liners or barges, each tells a unique story about the history of the city as a shipping and trading post
In the Museumshafen Oevelgönne, you can visit around 20 vintage ships, including the German and Dutch flat-bottomed vessels, steam tugs and barges There is also a steam crane, a high-seas cutter, as well as a harbour ferry that has been converted into a café The star of the harbour is the former lightship Elbe 3 The ships have not only been painstakingly restored but also still sail on occasion as well
The cargo ship Cap San Diego was built in 1961 and it has been permanently anchored as a museum ship at the Überseebrücke in the Hanseatic city since 1986 The elegant silhouette of this ship, which is still seaworthy, has now become a part of Hamburg’s harbour promenade as much as the Speicherstadt and the HafenCity
2. Fish Market
Every Sunday from 5 a m – 9:30 a m the legendary Hamburg Fish Market takes place (7 am from mid-November to midMarch) It’s essentially a giant flea market with lots of stalls selling fresh fish, fried fish and pickled fish, too – all ready to eat or to take home and cook yourself
As it has been since 1703, pretty much everything that is not bolted down is traded here, from kilos of fish at a bargain price, to dusty porcelain jugs or a chirpy family of ducks Either get up early, or hit the Reeper Bahn the night before and stay up late – Fish Brötchen (filled rolls) is officially the breakfast of party animals in Hamburg!

3.
The Alster Lake
The 160-hectare Alster Lake in the heart of the city is a true paradise for sailors, rowers and paddlers, but surprisingly has a depth of no more than 2 5 meters
Opulent grasslands on the edge of the bank offer plenty of opportunities to be close to the water, right in the middle of the city Just kicking back on a blanket or a deck chair, jogging “all the way round the Alster,” taking a walk, playing frisbee and boules –the options are endless for you to enjoy this splendid green oasis on land During some winters, you will even be able to make your way across the lake to the other bank without getting your feet wet Naturally, the Alster is surrounded by cafés and restaurants where you can enjoy a meal or drink with a splendid view of the water
In the southern part of this area discover the Kennedy Bridge and the Lombard Bridge which separate the larger Outer Alster from the Inner Alster — the latter gives the city center quite a romantic and maritime air This is where the Alster steamers take off from Jungfernstieg, a bustling and modern promenade These steamers run regular services connecting various quays on the Outer Alster So if you would rather not go out on the lake in a rented paddle boat, canoe or sailing dinghy, take a tour on the Alster steamer and experience the landscape as well as the silhouette of the city from the water!
4.
Hamburg Town Hall
Hamburg Town Hall was built from 1886 to 1897; its impressive architecture dominates the city center The magnificent sandstone building houses the city’s senate and parliament, which meets every second Tuesday It’s an impressive building which is well worth a tour, though it must be arranged in advance
In stark contrast to restrained Hanseatic style, the Town Hall has an elaborately decorated facade, flanked by a total of 20 statues of emperors The Kaisersaal (imperial hall), named because of the visit by Kaiser Wilhelm II at the opening of the North Sea-Baltic Canal, has a striking ceiling painting that symbolizes merchant shipping under the German flag
In the Senate chamber, light passes through the large glass roof: this symbolizes the ancient Germanic custom that the council should meet in open air The Grand Ballroom is 46 meters long, 18 meters wide and 15 meters high Five huge paintings depict the history of Hamburg from 800 to 1900 and 62 city coats of arms of the old Hanseatic League decorate the walls The three chandeliers with 278 lights each weigh 1,500 kilograms!
5.
St. Michaelis Church
Hamburg has many large churches, but none like St Michaelis Church – there is only one “Michel ” This famous city landmark is over 350 years old and was completely destroyed and rebuilt three times between 1641 and 1912
Experience the fabulous view of view of Hamburg, the port and the surrounding countryside from its platform 132 meters high, there is an elevator if you don’t want to attempt the stairs, which is quite a workout After dark, the panorama of the Hanseatic city from this viewpoint is breathtaking
GETTING THERE
By car, the journey time to Hamburg is around 5.5 hours from Kaiserslautern, 4.5 hours from Wiesbaden, and 6 hours from Stuttgart. For train options, check with Deutsche Bahn.

STRAAT: AMSTERDAM’S COOLEST MUSEUM
by Nate Cairney contributing writer
There is no shortage of world-class museums in Amsterdam. For many of us, the list often starts and stops with the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh museum. But here’s a secret: The best museum in Amsterdam doesn’t contain a single painting by an old master. If you want to experience art in a whole new way, check out STRAAT, the largest street art museum in the world.
STRAAT = Street art
A quick primer: Street art is what a lot of people call graffiti You see it on trains, walls, bridges, water towers, and pretty much anywhere in most cities In a lot of places, street art is still against the law Thus, for many street artists, the very act of grabbing a spray can is an expression of rebellion Which leads to an interesting question: Can a street art museum actually contain street art? If there’s nothing to rebel against, is it still street art?
In the case of STRAAT, the answer (for me, anyway) is a resounding yes Why? Well, rebellion isn’t always about violating civic ordinances Sometimes it’s about seeing something, or presenting something, in a totally new way It’s about breaking the mold
Not your everyday museum building
STRAAT’s building definitely breaks the mold There’s nothing sumptuous or classical about it
In fact, it once was an engineering workshop for the Netherlands Dock and Shipbuilding Company (NDSM) In other words, it was blue collar, functional, and as nonarty as you can get And then it was abandoned when NDSM went bankrupt in the 1980s
Nowadays, it makes for a killer street art museum The high ceilings and exposed metal beams inside give just the right feel for a place where the masterpieces are literally sprayed on the walls
And the building has been completely overhauled to feel like a city, complete with streets, squares and intersections Even if you’ve seen a ton of museums, the feel inside STRAAT is one of a kind
And of course, there is the art
Naturally, one of the museum’s most iconic pieces is spray-painted on the building’s exterior A massive mural of Anne Frank hovers over the entrance, a reminder from
the Brazilian artist Eduardo Kobra that a key component of a civilized world is respect for the differences and identities of others
Inside the museum, things get amazing Works by artists with names such as MonkeyBird, Eoin, BIMS, Welin and Mr June fill the space with color, shapes, whimsy, and provocation Many of the works contain a staggering level of detail,
to the point that it seems impossible that they were carried out with cans of spray paint
But spray paint was used, and is being used, which is part of the joy of STRAAT It is a living, breathing art museum You’ll see artists at work, putting new pieces on the walls, adding to the more than 150 works already inside, painted by 140 artists from more than
30 countries Many are classically trained Many more are not But all of them are incredibly skilled
Get into the act
If you’ve never been bold enough to pick up a can of paint and tag a random wall (full admission: I was/am way too much of a rule follower, so I haven’t), then you can rebel in relative peace at STRAAT
The museum offers 60-minute art and graffiti workshops for adults and children ages 12 and older every Saturday between 11:30 a m and 1:30 p m between March and October You’ll learn how to use spray paint, and try your hand at painting in large ship containers next to the museum It’s an excellent way to gain more insight into the genius and mastery of really good street artists Because making decent art with spray paint is difficult
STRAAT essentials
Getting to the museum is easy From Amsterdam Central Station, you can take a quick (less than 15 minutes), free ferry across the water to the NDSM wharf where the museum is located
Admission for adults is €19 50 For youths 13-18, a ticket costs €950 Admission is free for children 12 and younger STRAAT is open daily from 10 a m to 5 p m except for Mondays, when the museum is open noon to 5 p m

HOW ABOUT THE LOCAL DIALECT?
by Nicole Karsch-Meibom contributing writer
Your German teacher may have taught you how to say hello, “Guten Tag,” but have you ever been answered with a friendly greeting of “Grüß Gott,” “Moin” or “Guude”?
Don’t worry if you didn’t understand You have been introduced to the German dialect, and some Germans may not understand, either
Just as the different U S states have varying slang words and dialects, so do the different regions in Germany For example, a fisherman from the Frisian Islands up north will find it hard to talk to a winemaker from the Kaiserslautern area or a skiing teacher from the Alps
Everybody has their own dialect And this problem was even noticed by church reformer Martin Luther when he complained in 1538: “There are just too many dialects in the German language, that one might not understand each other properly ”
The reason dates back to early Germanic tribes who each had individual languages Through the centuries, the scattered regionalism and small territories didn’t help much to unify the language It was Luther and his Bible translation, as well as the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg, that set a standard for what was eventually to become “Hochdeutsch,” the dialect-free standard version of German you learn in school
Today, Germany has 16 major groups of dialects, but there are countless regional, even local, variations to each dialect Other than in Great Britain, where
speaking the regional tongue is a political dead-end, German politicians found it to be very helpful for their career to prove their belonging to a special region by means of dialect
You will encounter a stronger type of dialect in the rural areas than in metropolitan regions, and it is not uncommon for villagers to pride themselves on their very own language variation
So, as an example, if you are hungry and want to buy a plain bread roll: In the German capital of Berlin, you order “Schrippen,” whereas the Swabian bakery sells “Weckle,” its Franconian colleague offers “Breedla,” and the people in the south Baden talk about “Weggli ” They are called “Rundstücke” in the northern metropolis Hamburg, but “Semmeln” is your word in Bavaria You need to ask for “Luffe” in the Braunschweig area, and that’s not yet counting Austrian and Swiss dialects
But, if your German isn’t advanced enough and you are having trouble trying to cope with Ruhrdeutsch, Hamburgerisch, Kölsch, Hessisch, Sächsisch, Berlinerisch, Pfälzisch, Badisch, Plattdeutsch, Bayerisch, Schwäbisch or Fränkisch dialects, just stick with what you know — Hochdeutsch — and say, “Ein Brötchen, bitte!”
And if the German language and all its dialects don’t con-
fuse you enough, here’s the bonus round! In contrast to other German dialects, “Bayerisch” differs so much from standard German that even native German speakers have difficulties speaking and undererstanding it
So, the next time you are at Oktoberfest or sitting at a restuarant in Munich, listen for some of these phrases, or maybe try to use some on your own!
Hello! Could you tell me where to find a nice restaurant around here?
Griaß Eahna Gohd Kenna Sie uns sogn, wo ma bei Eahna a guade Wirtschaft findt?
I would like to order a large glass of beer, please! I mog a hoibe, bitschee!
Would you please bring me a menu?
Taatn S uns bitte d Speiskartn bringa?
Do you have roast pork with bread dumplings?
Hom’s a Schweinsbrohn mit Semmekneedl?
We would like to pay. Mir mechatn gern zoin
Thank you very much and have a nice day!
Dank schee und an scheena Tohg wünsch I!
SUMMER HIKING
by Ronnie Juhans contributing writer
The High Black Forest is a geographical, region in the southwest of the German federal state Baden-Württemberg, primarily in the Southern Black Forest. It is an all-season paradise that offers something for everyone when it comes to outdoor adventures.
During the Summer there are too many areas to mention so I will narrow it down to a few that are great for one day or weekend adventures
There are a variety of accommodations in the area that range from luxury hotels, vacation apartments, youth hostels, farms, and mountain cottages Most issue you a Konus or Hochschwarzwald Card that allows
What to bring:
Sturdy hiking shoes or boots, all-weather clothing that includes layers, water, snacks, first aid kit, toilet paper, sunscreen, insect repellant and Euro Most remote huts and mountain areas do not accept plastic
you free or discount bus or Bahn transportation for easy, convenient travel throughout the region thus eliminating driving around to search for one of your choice hiking areas especially during high season when vacation traffic can be well beyond frustrating
The following trails vary in ratings from easy to difficult and are clearly marked along the way
Dos and Don’ts:
• Stay on the trails to avoid disturbing wildlife and eco systems
• Keep your pets in control, and make sure that you clean up after them
• Take plenty of breaks if you are not used to being in high elevations
• Check weather conditions as they can change rapidly in this region
