“If I could go back in time, I would tell my younger self to cherish the present moment. We should seize the opportunity to live fully in the present, embracing its joys, challenges and uncertainties.”

~ Staff Sgt Emma Patterson, Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge, Deployment Medicine, 86th Operational Medical Readiness Squadron

“My mom inspires me. She was a 22 year old raising two young children. I will always be impressed with how much she provided for us and her success in the male dominant career field she worked in.”

The crew flew through winter weather and heavy fog on a mission targeting a crucial bridge over the River Rhine. After being struck by anti-aircraft flak, the B-17G caught fire and exploded, with seven of the nine crew members parachuting to safety. Though they survived, they were captured by the German air force and spent the remaining months of the war as prisoners of war.

U.S. Army Air Corps 2nd Lt. James Richard Mitchell and U.S. Army Air Corps Sgt. Nelson R. Beyer both perished in the crash.

U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Adrienne L. Williams, 86th Airlift Wing commander, represented the wing and gave a speech thanking the descendants for their families’ service.

“Our commemoration today emphasizes the importance of partnerships and community, as descended family members, military members, Germans, Americans, volunteers, and others helped make this memorial permanent. Time continues to tick forward, but the history, legacy, and

heritage of the Black Widow and 2nd Lt. Mitchell’s crew will always remain an essential lesson in service before self. We owe our lives, and our future, to these young men and their eternal legacy.”

Once the memorial was unveiled and the speeches concluded, guests were taken to the exact location where the cockpit crashed. Additionally, attendees witnessed a U.S. Air Force C-130J Super Hercules aircraft flyover with a personnel airdrop, a pigeon release and delivered speeches of their own to express their gratitude.

The guests and presiding officials attended a reception hosted by the city of Romerberg after the ceremony. This gave the chance for the U.S. Air Force, German air force and local communities to strengthen ties and pay respects to the past.

“Now, eighty years after Allied forces landed on Europe, it remains as important to honor and memorialize all those involved in defeating Axis forces,” said Williams. “To be able to remember together as allies, acknowledge history and work toward healing is the truest test of peace.”

US Air Force, Army restore Hohenfels Airfield for strategic NATO operations

Story and photos by Capt. Jacob Murray 435th Air Ground Operations Wing

In a demonstration of joint force cooperation, members of the U.S. Army and Air Force worked together to rehabilitate a dirt landing zone at Hohenfels Training Area, just in time for NATO’s Saber Junction 2024 exercise. The airstrip was restored through the combined efforts of the U.S. Army’s Raptor Engineer Team at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center, Hohenfels, the U.S. Air Force’s 435th Construction Training Squadron, and various Reserve and National Guard units.

A strategic need

The Hohenfels LZ had been non-operational for several years, unable to meet the demanding requirements for C-130J Super Hercules aircraft landings due to improper maintenance and environmental wear. With Saber Junction 2024 on the horizon, a large-scale NATO exercise involving complex airborne operations and airfield seizures, the need to restore the LZ became urgent.

“The airstrip had been out of commission for four to five years, and the Army reached out to us because they knew the importance of having this LZ operational for their upcoming exercises,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Jeremiah Wilkens, 435th CTS superintendent of military construction.

“Originally, we estimated it would take three to six months to bring the LZ up to spec, but thanks to a tremendous team effort, we got it done in just over a month.”

The challenge of time

U.S. Army Maj. Charles Pinto, project manager and officer in charge of the troop construction program at JMRC, was the driving force behind the operation. Pinto’s use of the TransAtlantic Castle program, which brings U.S. Army Reserve and National Guard engineer units from the continental United States to Germany for various construction projects, was a factor in the successful completion of the LZ restoration.

The restoration required coordination, manpower and specialized equipment. The Army did not have all the required expertise on hand, leading them to seek assistance from the Air Force, specifically the 435th CTS.

“Major Pinto was the one who brought this entire project together,” said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Jeff Burges, brigade engineer battalion senior trainer at JMRC. “He resourced and organized funds for materials, contracted equipment, coordinated transportation, and arranged TDYs for personnel from

across Europe and CONUS. He oversaw three rotations of Trans-Atlantic Castle, which allowed Army engineers to do the bulk of the construction work, while Air Force personnel provided the necessary expertise to ensure the LZ met all required standards.”

Technical expertise and coordination

The 435th CTS provided critical technical assistance, which included surveying the landing zone and ensuring that the soil compaction met the required standards for aircraft landings. They were also responsible for the overall project management, including surveying the LZ and ensuring that the compaction of the soil met the necessary standards for aircraft landings. U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Karissa Rodriguez, an engineering technician with the 435th CTS, played a pivotal role as the project manager.

“The construction of the LZ required the soil to reach the ideal shear strength and compaction, as well as meet Unified Facilities Criteria specification critical for safe landings,” Rodriguez said. “We used a combination of surveyors and equipment operators to achieve the necessary slopes and compaction, and then certified the airstrip to ensure the LZ meets the appropriate operational and safety standards for C-130 landings.”

Joint effort and overcoming challenges

According to Pinto, one of the significant hurdles faced by the team was the procurement of necessary materials and equipment.

“We had to bring in gravel and other materials from various locations, and equipment was borrowed from multiple units, including a GPS grader from the 15th Engineer Battalion in Grafenwoehr,” Pinto said. “Coordination was key. We were borrowing and contracting equipment from all over Europe and the U.S., but it all came together.”

The final phase of the project involved quality assurance and control, with additional support from the 820th RED HORSE Squadron from Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, and New Hampshire Air National Guard. Their role was to ensure the airstrip met all safety and operational standards.

The strategic importance of the LZ Burges emphasized that the successful completion of the Hohenfels LZ has far-reaching implications beyond the immediate exercise, including its strategic importance for NATO operations in Europe.

“This isn’t just about one exercise; this airfield provides a critical strategic platform in Europe, supporting both training and realworld operations,” Burges said. “It enhances our capability to conduct airborne operations and improves our overall readiness.”

Burges further elaborated on the importance of having a functional LZ from an Army perspective.

“When an airborne brigade conducts an airborne operation, they have limited combat power at the moment they hit the ground. They need some means to quickly increase their available combat power, and an airfield is a great example. Army paratroopers train for airfield sei-

Staff Sgt. Karissa Rodriguez’s efforts were recognized with an Army Commendation Medal, presented by Burges during a ceremony held at Ramstein AB.

“Staff Sergeant Rodriguez gave up her summer to be out here, working from sunup to sundown every day,” Burges said. “Without her expertise, this project wouldn’t have been completed on time.”

The future of Joint Operations

The successful collaboration between the U.S. Army and Air Force at Hohenfels is a testament to the power of joint operations. It not only highlights the ability of U.S. forces to work together under pressure but also underscores the importance of crossservice training and cooperation.

“This project shows that you don’t have to wait for leadership to mandate collaboration,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Ross Jurek, 435th CTS MCF flight commander. “The Army is a ready and willing partner. If you reach out, there are always opportunities to work together and learn from each other.”

zure because they need some way to quickly increase combat power once on the ground,” Burges said. “The LZ allows for rapid air land operations, bringing in additional combat power to support the mission.”

Recognition of efforts

In a ceremony held at Ramstein Air Base, four Air Force personnel were recognized with Army awards for their contributions. U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Jesse Mallory, a heavy equipment and pavements specialist with the 435th CTS, was one of the recipients.

“We helped establish a baseline for what was necessary to reconstruct the LZ and also got some valuable training in for the reservists,” Mallory said. “It was a great experience.”

Other U.S. Air Force awardees included Staff Sgt. Alex Look, who provided critical equipment training to Army personnel, and Tech. Sgt. Johnneil “chess master” Rojas, who led the surveying team that laid the groundwork for the entire project.

As Saber Junction 2024 kicks off, the revitalized Hohenfels LZ will stand as a symbol of what can be achieved when the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force combine their strengths. It also sets a precedent for future joint efforts, demonstrating that with the right people and resources, even the most challenging projects can be completed ahead of schedule and to the highest standards.

Looking ahead

With the success of the Hohenfels project, the 435th CTS and their Army counterparts are already looking ahead to future collaborations. The lessons learned from this project will inform how both services approach similar challenges in the future, ensuring that U.S. and NATO forces remain ready to respond to any contingency, anywhere in the world. The teams involved can take pride in a job well done and the continued strategic readiness of U.S. and NATO forces in Europe.

US military medical forces synchronize medical operations across Europe, Africa

More than 120 U.S. military medical leaders, providers, planners, and logisticians from across the European and African theaters assembled at Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Aug. 20-22 to take part in a Senior Leader Forum hosted by Medical Readiness Command, Europe.

The purpose of the forum was to establish a common operational picture, orient medical leaders to the Europe and African theaters and synchronize all theater medical activities for any potential realworld contingencies that may arise.

The host for the forum was U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Roger Giraud, commander of Medical Readiness Command, Europe, command surgeon for U.S. Army Europe and Africa and director of Defense Health Network Europe. During his opening remarks, Giraud highlighted the importance of unity of effort, convergence, and collaboration among the theater U.S. military medical services.

“The goal of this forum is to achieve convergence, unity of effort towards a common goal, a shared vision and support of our combatant commands and the service components across the theaters,” said Giraud. “We are here to further integrate, coordinate and synchronize, and work towards a strategy with defined outcomes.“

According to event organizers, the forum provided a unique opportunity for U.S. military medical assets in Europe and Africa to share lessons learned and establish a common operating picture to better serve U.S. forces dispersed across the European and African theaters.

“We must be ready now as we move through the continuum from competition, into crisis and into potential conflict,” added Giraud. “The potential, of course, exists that we are ready to deliver excellent medical care to those who depend upon us. And that is non-negotiable.”

Senior U.S. military medical officials indicate that providing

the best medical care possible to U.S. servicemembers and their mission is a top priority for all DOD medical leaders across the theater and area of operation.

“We have to bring together all the DOD medical assets supporting Europe and Africa,” Giraud added. “We must understand the overarching plan that we’re supporting, and then we must have a support plan that is nested with that operational plan so that our medical teams understand what it is we need to deliver to the forces that we support.”

According to military medical experts, planning events like this are critical in supporting theaterwide U.S. military tactical operations.

“What we have at stake is that Soldier, that Sailor, that Airman, that Marine, that Coast Guardsman,” said Giraud. “When he or she calls for a medic or corpsman, we must answer their call with the right medical capability at the right time and with the right skill sets so others may live.”

21st TSC Soldier awarded for safety excellence

Alone, so deep in the woods that no one could hear his cries for help, young Michael Bardas, a self-proclaimed “adrenaline-junky” edged to the cliff face.

His pulse raced, and his breathing quickened. He sprang forward and sped toward the murky, churning water below. Luckily for Bardas, he survived to tell the tale and grew up to be a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army.

These days, 1st Lt. Michael Bardas, the safety officer in charge of the 16th Special Troops Battalion has safety in the front of his mind all day every day. Recently, his dedication to the 16th STB safety program resulted in him being awarded the U.S. Army Europe and Africa Command’s Individual Award of Excellence in Safety for junior officers.

“When I was younger, I was a foolish live-free, die-hard teenager and just didn’t think about the safety aspect of some of the things I did,” said Bardas. “I did all sorts of stupid things that could have gotten me hurt from cliff jumping to off-roading full speed in the National Forest. To make things worse, I was known for disappearing into the wilderness alone and not letting anyone know where I was going. As I got more experience in life, I learned the importance of safety and how having a safe workplace can make a huge difference in Soldier and employee morale and mission readiness,” Bardas explained.

In May 2023, Bardas was given

the reigns for the battalion’s safety program. His battalion commander, Lt. Col. Hardy Johnson, sat him down and explained that safety was a primary battalion goal. Soon after Bardas assumed the position, Johnson empowered him with a message to the battalion staff. “He told everyone that safety was a priority and that when I have safety input, I am speaking on his behalf. Because the commander had my back, it made a huge difference in my ability to keep Soldiers safe,” said Bardas. “My commander now, Lt. Col. Glosson, continues to support my efforts.”

Bardas credits his passion for safety to multiple factors. “I look back at my childhood and I am grateful nothing unfortunate happened. I also thank and love my wife for coming to me one day when I was shooting on our property in Colorado, and I hadn’t fully cleared an area for target practice. She reminded me and continues to remind me, I am a husband and a father, and my family needs me to stay safe. That day stands out as pivotal in the way I think about safety. So, she is the original source of my passion,” Bardas explained.

Bardas began his career as an enlisted Soldier having held multiple separate military occupation specialties in the engineer corps before leaving the Army to earn his degree and change his stripes for a gold lieutenant bar. During his time as a combat engineer and a horizontal construction engineer, Bardas witnessed incidents that likely could have been avoided. “I draw from the knowledge of my past enlisted days where I saw Soldiers get

hurt. Now I am in a position to create and run a program that avoids the mistakes I have seen in the past,” Bardas said. “I want all of my Soldiers to make it home to their families at the end of the day,’ he explained,” he said.

Since his role began as the battalion safety officer, Bardas has implemented several new programs for the battalion, like an inspection calendar and the hearing conservation program. When Bardas took on his current role, the battalion did not have any certified fire safety personnel in the work and living spaces.

“I built our fire safety and prevention program. We have a partnership with the Baumholder Fire Department. They support us with training spaces throughout the year to give our personnel training. All of our barracks managers are trained personnel who know how to prevent fires and what to do in case of a fire,” said Bardas.

In many Army units, tragedy strikes without warning due to the untimely deaths of servicemembers who crash their motorcycles.

According to an Army safety report (curbing motorcycle fatalities in 2024) on safety.army.mil, FY23 was the worst year in a decade for fatal PMV-2 (motorcycle) mishaps. The Army saw 38 Soldiers die in motorcycle mishaps in FY23, which is well above the five-year average from FY18-22 of 24 fatalities a year.

“Motorcycle safety is a hot topic. I was talking to some of our riders in the battalion and they were explained that they had the advanced rider certifications. From there, we created a motorcycle mentorship program, which

resulted in a local community partnership with the local Baumholder Motorcycle Club,” said Bardas. “We formed the partnership and ended up doing a familiarization ride between our battalion servicemembers and locals from the motorcycle club.”

Future plans for the motorcycle mentorship program are to merge with other battalions within the 21st Theater Sustainment Command and grow the program, according to Bardas.

“My goal is to continue to build on the successes and best practices we have implemented as a battalion. Honestly, I just legitimately care about

people getting home safely. I wouldn’t want to have someone tell my family that dad’s not coming home,” Bardas said.

The 21st TSC places heavy emphasis on empowering leaders to make safety corrections and run thorough safety programs.

“We are all proud of the work that people like Lieutenant Bardas is doing. We have a strong cadre of professionals throughout the 21st TSC who care about unit and individual safety. This USAREUR-AF safety award is just one indicator of his passion and motivation,” said John Rice, the 21st TSC safety director.

As need for comfort dogs grows, so does USO’s canine program

A calming presence is sometimes all you need to feel better when you’re going through a hard time. The military community knows this well — and they know some of the best comfort-givers come in the form of four-legged, furry friends.

One USO Missouri-based therapy dog — a 150-pound Great Dane named Maverick — has become a bit of a celebrity. In 2023, he was named the American Humane Hero Dog Awards’ Therapy Dog of the Year, and he also earned the USO’s inaugural Canine Volunteer of the Year award.

Kelly Brownfield, Maverick’s handler and the manager of the USO Missouri’s Canine Program, based at Fort Leonard Wood, said she believes he was born to help others. He has a knack for knowing who needs him, even in a big crowd.

“He roams the facility, and at times, you’ll find him laying with a service member, and it is obvious that the service member is going through something,” Brownfield said. “Maverick finds them and lets them know he is there for them.”

Expanding the program nationally

The USO Missouri started its comfort dog program as a pilot program in 2013 before becoming an official entity in 2015. Since then, the branch’s dogs and their handlers, who are certified volunteers, have worked to expand the program, which offers support to struggling service members and their families. Brownfield said they helped the national branch of the USO set up its own program, which officially launched as the USO Canine Program in 2023.

The animals are registered therapy dogs, family pets and military working dogs who have given comfort to children at schools, patients in hospitals and individual military units in need of support.

“The program … is about lifting the spirits of our military and their family members,” Brownfield said. “It [is] about helping them through hard times — helping tear down those emotional barriers, especially when an unexpected tragedy happens.”

Maverick’s sidekick at the USO Missouri is Apache, another Great Dane therapy dog. When they’re not at Fort Leonard Wood, they can be found traveling throughout the state and country to help with special requests.

The dogs have helped support service members on suicide watch, and they comfort children who have suffered abuse, providing them with hope and strength.

“It can make all the difference in the world,” Brownfield said.

Another important mission they carry out: accompanying families to burials of their loved ones.

“Seeing a loved one’s name on that headstone can be a trigger-

ing moment, but having one of the canines by your side might help get you through that,” Brownfield said. “They act as their rock to lean on.”

Paula Tackett’s husband, Phillip Tackett, spent 36 years in the Army as a criminal investigator and helped expand Fort Leonard Wood’s canine program, which he often used during his career. “He dealt with a lot of instances where there needed to be someone [the victim] trusted,” Paula Tackett said.

Maverick helped her family, too, when her husband died in 2023.

“Maverick is one of those kinds of dogs that just gravitates toward the ones who need help,” Tackett said.

“The night that we had the viewing at the funeral home, he came in. He put his paw on the casket, then kind of sat down. He stayed right with me and the kids because he knew. … He was just that calming presence.”

From one celebrity to another Actor David Boreanaz, who plays a special warfare operator on the Paramount+ TV show “SEAL Team,” recently went on his first USO Tour to visit the Canine Program at Fort Leonard Wood. Canines are a pivotal part of his show, so it was a fitting choice.

“I don’t want to fill those paws,” Boreanaz joked of meeting Maverick.

“I just want to be part of his energy … feel that excitement and healing attributes that Maverick puts out.”

Boreanaz is no stranger to the military. Aside from playing a SEAL on TV, his father worked for the American Forces Network, so he’s been in tune to what the USO has to offer since he was a child.

“I’ve always been enamored by it,” he said before the visit. “I’m excited for this … stepping into their boots and seeing their activities and what they do.”

The USO has more than 250 centers worldwide. Forty-two of them now have USO Canine Programs. Each location uses the program differently to fit their needs.

“Our dogs help remind those we work with what unconditional love is,” Brownfield said. “I can’t wait to see where it goes from here, and I can only hope the program continues to grow and touch lives around the world.”

A guardian angel

A few days after Boreanaz’s visit, Maverick had a major scare of his own. The Great Dane had to have surgery to remove a cancerous tumor. Two days later, Brownfield said he was rushed to an emergency room because his stomach had flipped and twisted around his spleen.

“The vet said there was no way he should’ve survived,” Brownfield said. “I told her he has many guardian angels on his side and a nation pulling for him.”

Days later, Maverick was reported to be doing much better.

“He is our miracle!” Brownfield said. “We are honored to have such a remarkable animal to share with others.”

Softball championships spur competition, team spirit

The teams are comprised of active duty, reserve and National Guard personnel from military installations around the world.

Tickborne diseases in Europe — what you need to know

While exposure to ticks is more common during the warm summer months, contact can occur throughout the year. People who work or spend time in the woods, such as farmers, hunters, and people who visit these areas for recreation, are at the highest risk of infection.

According to Public Health officials, the overall prevalence of tick-borne infections is increasing globally. This is due, in part, to the expansion of tick populations into new geographic regions and increased human exposure because of environmental and climatic changes.

“The threat of tick-borne disease throughout Europe is different depending on where in Europe you’re located,” said U.S. Army Capt. Michael Dunbar, an entomologist assigned to Public Health Command Europe. “For example, Lyme disease is present throughout Europe while tick-borne encephalitis is mainly present in Eastern Europe and the Baltic states. However, both Lyme disease and TBE are considered a low threat in Europe, especially if people take precautionary measures and seek vaccination. TBE is not currently found in the United States.”

According to medical officials, there are several simple steps, or precautionary measures, people

“If you have a tick on you, don’t panic,” added Dunbar. “Simply remove the tick using a pair of fine tipped tweezers and grasp the tick as close to the skin’s surface as possible. Pull upward with steady, even pressure. Do not twist or jerk the tick as this can cause mouthparts to break off and remain in the skin. After removing the tick, clean the bite area and wash your hands with rubbing alcohol or soap and water.”

According to Public Health Officials, ticks can spread bacteria, viruses and parasites that cause human diseases. Among them are tick-borne encephalitis and Lyme disease. While there are vaccinations that can protect against TBE, there is currently no vaccination against Lyme disease.

“The simplest and easiest way to reduce contact with ticks is to avoid areas where ticks may be present,” added Dunbar. “Those areas include tall grasses, deer trails, and wooded areas. You should also

wear long sleeves and long pants. If you’re moving through areas where you suspect there are ticks, tuck your pants into your socks. For military servicemembers, proper wearing of insecticide-treated uniforms will help. Finally, check yourself, others, and pets for ticks when returning from outside. Clothes can

be placed in a dryer on high temperature for 20 minutes to kill any ticks that may be hiding on your clothes.”

According to medical professionals, if you’ve been bitten by a tick, there are simple, yet effective, measures to safely remove the tick from your skin.

“The only available preemptive vaccination for a tick-borne disease is against TBE,” Dunbar added. “The TBE vaccination (TICOVAC) is given in a three-dose series and should be taken before exposure to ticks. Individuals who are interested in receiving the TBE vaccine should consult their primary care provider. Unfortunately, there is no vaccination protecting against Lyme disease. The good news is Lyme disease can be treated post exposure with antibiotics.”

ABC IN KMC: FEDERWEISSER, FINE WINE, FESTIVALS

If you’re a lover or even connoisseur of great wines, or rather prefer fruity grape juice, you’re just in the right place to be! Germany is one of Europe’s largest winegrowing countries and the state of Rheinland-Pfalz produces two-thirds of the country’s fine wines.

The Moselle and Saar valleys along with Rheinhessen are wellknown grape growing regions. Most of the vineyards are on or very close to the 50th latitude, which is rather unusual in international comparison. High quality and successful viticulture are only possible based on a special unique meso and microclimate condition.

The “Deutsche Weinstrasse” (German wine route) stretches 85 kilometers from Rheinhessen in the north to the French Alsace region in the southwest and ends at Deutsches Weintor (wine gate). Many famous towns such as Bad Dürkheim, Neustadt and Landau lie along the way and the region is renowned for vineyards as far as the eye can see on flat plains in close proximity to the Rhein River. The special mild climate zone provides 1,800 hours of sun a year.

Another famous viticulture region is along the Moselle and Saar rivers, but on steep slopes with up to 60 percent inclines. Approximately 60 million vines grow along the steep hills where the winding rivers reflect sunlight onto the slopes and warm the vines to ripen to a plentiful harvest.

The Celts were the first to cultivate white grapes along the banks and slopes of the Moselle River almost 3,000 years ago. Then Romans refined the winemaking process, improved the quality and eventually introduced darker red grapes. As wine consumption of the Romans grew along with the empire throughout the centuries, soldiers and civil servants were paid with wine, rather than coins, and even slaves received a daily ration.

About 9.25 million hectoliters (2.4 million gallons) of wine are produced annually in Germany and approximately 257.000 hectoliters (668.200 gallons) alone

are exported to the United States. September marks the beginning of the harvest season which can last until December. Large state-of-the art grape harvesters can pick the grapes on even surfaces, however the vineyards on the steep slopes of the Moselle and Rhein Rivers have to be picked by hand, a tedious task.

After the initial grape pressing process, also known as keltering, the premier wine produced is called Federweisser (feather white) because of its milky, white color. Although very sweet in taste, it also has a high alcohol content and is often sold in containers in little booths along the roadside.

A tradition that comes with the season is delicious and spicy Zwiebelkuchen (onion cake) together with the semi-processed wine. The warm dish, more of a quiche than a typical cake, with onions and bacon bits, is a perfect complement to the fizzling new wine. Freshly pressed, pure and sweet grape juice is also a perfect alternative for those that prefer a non-alcoholic delight.

After the first winter frost in late November or early December, the very last grapes are handpicked and processed into a sweet, rare and expensive Eiswein (ice wine).

Wine fests

A cozy wine tasting in a small circle is a great way to get to know the best products from individual winemakers. However, if you really want to immerse yourself deeply in the culture and taste of an entire wine-growing region, there is no better place to start than the wine festivals in the villages and towns of Rheinland-Pfalz. Every year, every town, no matter how small, celebrates the grape juice in the streets, squares and alleys, but there are some communities that think a lot bigger: they dress in historical costumes, organize magnificent parades and hire local music groups, and in some cases they even have amusement rides and fireworks to bring you closer to the local wines and, on top of that, the local culture. Upcoming wine fests from late August to October:

• Bernkastel-Kues-Weinfest Mittelmosel, Aug. 29–Sep. 2: The wine fest season kicks off at the end of August at the Middle Moselle Wine Festival in the charming wine town of Bernkastel-Kues, famous for its picturesque market square with ancient half-timbered houses.

• Mainzer Weinmarkt 2024, Aug. 29–Sep. 1 and Sep.

5–8: While you can marvel at the historic ambience of the town centers on the Moselle with their half-timbered buildings, Rheinhessen welcomes you at the same time at the wine market in the state’s capital right in the heart of the green lung of Mainz.

• Binger Winzerfest, Aug. 30–Sep. 9: Another Rheinhessen awarded event in the Bingen Wine Festival at the apex of the Rhine and Nahe Rivers. For 11 days, the people of Bingen celebrate the artistry of their winemakers, making it the longest festival on the Rhine.

• Wurstmarkt Bad Dürkheim, Sep. 6–10, 13–16 (FriTues): Said to be the largest wine festival in the world, the Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt (sausage market) lures you to the German Wine Route for 9 days and nights with an extensive program. Special trains will be running from Kaiserslautern, so hop on and enjoy the festivities!

• Herbstmarkt mit Weindorf in Landau, Sep. 7–16: Landau autumn market with its traditional wine village invites you to the south of the Palatinate in mid-September.

A total of 71 white and 52 red grape varieties are cultivated

here — just the right variety for your discerning taste!

• Deutsches Weinlesefest, Neustadt/Weinstrasse, Sep. 27 – Oct. 14: As soon as the festive season in Bad Dürkheim is over, the next major event about the liquid gold begins in Neustadt. From late September to mid-October, the German Wine Harvest Festival offers you two very special highlights in addition to the large fair and the w.i.n.e.FESTival. Every year, the election of the German Wine Queen traditionally takes place. At the end of the celebrations, numerous traditional and marching groups as well as spectacular floats parade through the city — forming the largest wine parade in all of Germany!

• Rotweinfest Ingelheim, Sep. 28–Oct. 6: The small town of Ingelheim is not far from the state capital, whose red wine festival in the historic ambience of the illuminated castle church is one of the most beautiful wine festivals in Rheinhessen. As the name suggests, it specializes in red wines, but you can also sip a white wine along the banks of the Rhein River enjoying the view.

CROSSWORD

Triberg highlights

The Black Forest Museum

Triberg’s Black Forest Museum has the largest collection of barrel organs in Europe. There are also wood carvings and traditional costumes on display.

Maria in der Tanne Church

This Baroque church, which is just outside of Triberg, was a place of pilgrimage and built at the beginning of the 18th century. The legend attached to this church dates back to 1644: it is said that a young girl was cured of an eye disease by the water from a nearby spring. The following year, a local tailor was cured of leprosy at the same place. In gratitude he put a small statue of the Virgin Mary in a hole in a tree, and this is how the church got its name “Mary in the Tree.”

Next to the church (which has an elaborate high altar) you will find the Mesnerhäuschen (the sacristan’s house), a small half-timbered building that is the second oldest house in Triberg. It dates back to 1697.

Europe’s Biggest Cuckoo Clock

It seems that everywhere you go in Triberg you see cuckoo clocks. If you wish to buy one as a souvenir, then head for Oli’s Schnitzstube or the House of 1,000 Clocks, where you will find hand-carved cuckoo clocks of superior quality. You will also find Europe’s biggest cuckoo clock here – you can’t miss it!

The Nature Discovery Park (Naturerlebnispark)

This is a great place to take children who can romp and play in natural surroundings. There is also a stage where cul-

tural events are held against the backdrop of the beautiful Black Forest, with seating for around 300 people.

Burggarten

At one time there was a castle in Triberg, although it no longer exists. The castle was built during the 13th century. However the castle gardens are now open to visitors and you can have a look at the ruins, which are all that remain of the castle. The gardens are perfect if you need to rest after a hard day of walking around Triberg on a shopping expedition.

Holzgeschnitzter Rathaussaal

The carved wooden council chamber is a

masterpiece, with its depictions of Black Forest life. It is open to the public from 8:30 until 12:30 Mondays to Fridays and from Monday to Thursday it is open from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m.

Eating and Drinking in Triberg

Bergseestuble Inn

This is a restaurant located at Cl.-MariaHofbauer-Str. 19 and it is great for meals or simply coffee and cakes. Try the venison goulash for a change of taste, and don’t forget to try a slice of real Black Forest Gateau!

La Cascata Ristorantino Cafe Bar

This café-bar serves very good Italian cuisine and is centrally located at

Haupstrasse, 83. This place is great for pasta and pizza (and ice cream) and makes a pleasant change from German meals.

Tresor Restaurant

The Tresor Restaurant is also on Hauptstrasse at number 63. The dining room used to be a bank vault, so the interior is different to that of the usual restaurants. The beer and fish and chips are particularly recommended.

Getting there

By car, Triberg is approximately 3 hours from Kaiserslautern and Wiesbaden, and 1.5 hours from Stuttgart. Please check the Deutsche Bahn website for train options.
