U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa A6 and 86th Mission Support Group leadership attended a ribbon cutting ceremony for the grand reopening of the Premier Data Center, Jan. 15.

Although the previous data center was functional and met the needs of the base, there was room for improvement and a need to repair prior to renovations. The effort to move all the equipment out of the building and distribute it between other data centers was called Evacuate the Castle.

“This upgrade was a long time in the making. I’ve been hearing about Evacuate the Castle since I got here,” said Col. James A. Cunningham, 86th MSG commander. “I didn’t quite understand the magnitude of what was going on until I had the opportunity to walk through and see what was happening.”

The reopening allows the 86th U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa A6 and 86th Mission Support Group leadership attend a ribbon cutting ceremony for the grand reopening of Ramstein Air Base’s Premier Data Center, Jan. 15. The time and money spent on ensuring the dependability and increased capability of this installation makes it a strategic center of importance to U.S. European Command as well as the Department of Defense.

Citizen Airmen answer astronauts HSFS search, rescue call

A joint-task force of Guardsmen and Reservists conquer air, space and sea to provide Human Space Flight Support training for astronaut retrieval through search and rescue Jan. 14-17, at Patrick Space Force Base.

Guardsmen from the 204th Airlift Squadron, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, joined hands with Reservists from the 315th Airlift Wing, Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina, and the 308th Rescue Squadron, Patrick SFB, Florida, to train on HSFS search and rescue airdrop techniques, used to retrieve astronauts from open-ocean waters upon returning to Earth.

“The developments in the space industry from 2020, when [JB] Hickam originally picked up this alert, until now, show an increase in SpaceX launches to include Boeing Starliner, and now in 2026, the Artemis team,” said Maj. Ryan Schieber, 315th Operations Support Squadron HSFS lead planner.

With the space community growing, the number of HSFS astronaut retrievals also grew to approximately three to four alerts per year. Leading the 204th AS to build a jointtask force with the 308th RQS, under the 920th Rescue Wing, as the only Air Force Reserve Command wing that trains and equips combat search and rescue Airmen, and partner with the 315th AW to certify HSFS airdrop search and rescue Airmen.

“We're here to certify the Charleston Reserve aircrew, the pilots, and the loadmasters,” said Master Sgt. Makaio Roberts, 204th AS HSFS deputy program manager. “They’re our Total Force Partner with the 308th RQS, as we support the launches and recoveries by working with NASA, SpaceX, Boeing and now the Artemis programs.”

In 2025, the 315th AW answered the call to partner with the 204th AS to become HSFS airdrop qualified. HSFS training opportunities provide reliable training and efficiency for multi-capable Airmen.

“We’re conducting realistic drops of both personnel and equipment into an offshore drop zone, simulating how we would locate and recover isolated personnel in a maritime environment,” said Capt. Nicolas Walsh, 308th RQS combat rescue officer drop zone controller.

In 7.5 hours of flight time, the joint task force accomplished 10 airdrops, to include 30 pararescuemen jumps, in hostile seas and winter temperatures. Despite the limited availability, experienced airdrop aircrews and maintenance teams excelled in maximizing the use of available resources, ensuring high levels of readiness.

“By dropping different pieces of equipment that help to ensure astronauts are able to be rescued in the event of a splashdown and that we have rescue qualifications, so we’ll be able to support the realworld launches and recoveries for the HSFS program,” Roberts said.

“Space travel is expected to increase, so the search and rescue alert is going to increase, and we will be ready to answer that call,” Schieber said.

The HSFS airdrop joint task force offers Airmen an opportunity that most C-17 aircrews haven’t experienced before. By working jointly with the 204th AS and 308th RQS, HSFS airdrop qualified Airmen to help develop them into missionready Airmen.

“This is a very unique operation for the C-17 to participate in rescue airdrop, giving them a look at a different mission set on the C-17 is just another aspect of keeping them ready to go for the next fight,” Schieber said.

Communications Squadron to ingest and take on more missions to better support the theater with a greater capability. This multimillion dollar data center is designed to provide critical services to our NATO and allied partners and will provide cyber services supporting every wing in USAFE, all geographically separated units, and tactical missions across Europe and Africa.

“It’s one of four data centers we’re currently maintaining, so it’s the newest and it’s the shiniest,” said Tech. Sgt. Garett Savard, 86th CS data center manager. “We are excited to have the rush of interest come our way as long as it’s done correctly and they follow our rules.”

The upgraded data center is designed to provide a significantly increased uptime rating for services. This increase in dependability ensures that cyber is there whenever an Airman needs them.

“We can provide a sense of reliability and security all the way down to the Airmen, so they don’t just come in and grind away at tickets and create accounts,”

Savard said. “They get to actually interface with contractors and engineers from every organization you can imagine and get a peek at just how far their job reaches out and impacts the base and the mission.”

A requirement in the new standard of operations of the Premier Data Center ensures everything has an extra system. This allows for maintenance while maintaining power, heating, ventilation and air conditioning and never endangering the reliability of equipment in the data center. This also includes a fire suppression system safe for both electronics and employees.

The time and money spent on ensuring the dependability and increased capability of this installation makes it a strategic center of importance to U.S. European Command as well as the Department of Defense.

“I know thousands of hours went into this project and I know each of you guys put your heart and soul into making this a reality,” Cunningham said. “My hat’s off to all of you. Thank you very much for the opportunity to be a part of this.”

Command, while touring the Maintenance Activity Kaiserslautern in Kaiserslautern, Jan. 16. MAK is a facility that plays a critical role in supporting U.S. Army Europe and Africa's operations.

U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Joseph Ryan, deputy chief of staff for G-3/5/7, visited U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz on Jan. 16 to meet with key leaders and gain a deeper understanding of European operations.

The day began with a site visit to the Coleman Army Prepositioned Stocks-2 worksite in Mannheim, where Ryan received a comprehensive tour of the facilities and a detailed capabilities briefing. During the visit, he was also briefed by key leaders, including Maj. Gen.

Ronald Ragin, commanding general of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, as well as Col. Ernest Lane II, commander of the 405th Army Field Support Brigade, and Lt. Col. Jonathan Neal, commander of Army Field Support BattalionGermany.

The primary mission at the Coleman APS-2 worksite is the storage and maintenance of an Armored Brigade Combat Team’s worth of APS-2 combat vehicles and equipment sets. The 405th AFSB’s APS-2 program provides turn-key power projection packages ready to deploy at a moment’s notice while helping to reduce the

amount of equipment needed from the deploying forces’ home stations. APS-2 sites like Coleman help reduce deployment timelines, improve deterrence capabilities and provide additional combat power for contingency operations. APS-2 equipment may also be drawn for use in training and exercises.

The visit continued with a tour of the Maintenance Activity Kaiserslautern, a key facility that plays a critical role in supporting U.S. Army Europe and Africa’s operations. During the tour, Ragin helped Ryan gain greater insight of the organization’s scope and mission by briefing the Theater

The MAK briefing was led by William Leslie, TLSC-E/A operations director, who talked about TLSC-E/A’s capabilities. Following the briefing, Markus Cappel, MAK director, guided the group on a walkthrough of the maintenance bays, giving Ryan a firsthand look at the facility’s operations and allowing him to see the maintenance processes in action.

The mission of MAK is to provide expert maintenance support for a wide range of tactical and com-

mercial equipment, serving Army, joint, combined, and multinational forces, as well as supporting combatant commanders.

In recent times, the MAK has undergone a significant shift in focus, concentrating its efforts on building capability for the maintenance of complex tracked vehicles, such as the M2 Bradley. Additionally, the facility is driving modernization efforts across multiple fronts, including equipment, infrastructure, and training, to ensure it remains at the forefront of maintenance support and can effectively meet the evolving needs of its customers.

USAG RP, Air Force partner for first-ever joint OPSEC II training

A team of operations security experts from U.S. Air Forces EuropeAfrica and U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz came together in early January at Sembach Kaserne to deliver the first-of-its-kind joint OPSEC II and III training and certification course.

The Army’s Operations Security Support Element developed the course to train Army operations security officers and program managers to be able to successfully implement OPSEC measures at all levels of the Army.

The Army’s decentralized training approach was what drew U.S. Air Force Capt. Ryan Miccio, an information operations officer with the 603rd Air Operations Center at Ramstein Air Base, to get his OPSEC level III trainer certification and push for Air Force students to be able to attend the Army’s course.

“The Air Force has a great program for OPSEC instruction, but it is centralized in the U.S.,” Miccio said. “The OPSEC Level III certification allows me to get legitimate courseware to our Airmen, even from a sister service.”

Miccio was one of the lead instructors for the January course. He said that other than a few differ-

ences in naming conventions, the course’s focus on including OPSEC at all levels of the planning process benefits both Airmen and Soldiers.

“The joint course just makes the most sense,” Miccio said. “We work alongside each other every day. Hopefully this is just the start to how the KMC can align resources to enable different organizations who are accomplishing some of the same missions to learn from each other.

The course included another “first,” as USAG RheinlandPfalz’s Directorate of Information Management deployed a kiosk system that allowed the non-Army course participants to access to the Army-based course content, Miccio said.

In addition to certifying 28 Army and Air Force students in OPSEC level II, this course offered “train-the-trainer” certification in OPSEC level III for two Army civilian employees, increasing the garrison’s capacity to train and certify employees in OPSEC level II.

Tammy Muckenfuss, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz director of public affairs, is one of the students who received OPSEC level III certification.

Muckenfuss said the joint nature of the training presented an opportunity to discover the similarities and differences between the

two services.

“Understanding the nuances helps us navigate our missions better as partners, especially in the KMC where the Air Force and Army are literally side-by-side,” Muckenfuss said.

She highlighted the benefit of expanding OPSEC level II training opportunities for the local Army garrison and Air Force workforces.

“This ultimately enhances the security of our shared communities!” she said.

Joey Gibbons, an operations officer with the USAG RheinlandPfalz Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security, was one of the OPSEC level II students. He said his experience in the course will not only help him keep the garrison’s operations security program running smoothly but will help him protect himself in his personal life.

Gibbons added that while he had always completed his required annual OPSEC level I training, this course gave him a new breadth and depth of understanding for how OPSEC is integral to joint military operations.

“While some of the different products used by the Army and Air Force OPSEC programs are unique to each service, the end state is the same: OPSEC is every -

one’s business!” Gibbons said.

Miccio underscored the importance of OPSEC for every member of the joint force. “OPSEC is more than just post-

ers and pamphlets,” he said. “It is a capability to protect the force and the mission. Protection is a big problem set, and joint problems require joint solutions.”

Tidal wave of partnership, deterrence reaches shores of Poland

Several Soldiers assigned to the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division huddled in the freezing and salty night air around a pair of USO-Poland employees while one tore open and quickly began distributing a box of chemically-activated hand warmer packs.

Hundreds of U.S. Army Soldiers, federal civilian employees, commercially contracted stevedores, and transportation personnel arrived at the Port of Gdynia in the dark of night on Jan. 17 to offload approximately 250 pieces of equipment, including howitzers, Humvees and M1 Abrams tanks, from the Logistics Naval Vessel Cape Texas in support of the Reception and Staging portions of the RSOM mission.

The ship offload was just one of the dozens of port operation spread throughout the Baltic, Black, and Mediterranean Seas that serve to facilitate the overarching reception, staging, and onward movement mission in the European Theater annually.

“This mission is unique to us because not only do we have the rotational forces’ equipment needed for their deployment, but we also have foreign military sales vehicles that will go to the Polish Army. So the execution of this mission directly supports the NATO alliance and also strengthens our partnership and bonds with our Polish allies,” said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Dustin Van Fleet, the 839th Transportation Battalion’s mobility officer.

RSOM missions like the port operation at Gdynia are the mechanisms that feed U.S. Army units with vehicles and other materials needed to accomplish its missions.

These missions typically incorporate seaports, commercial trucking ground transportation, and the use of railways. Recently, as an example of the commitment to RSOM, the 21st Theater Sustainment Command has processed and moved more than 500,000 tons of equipment through Europe, which is an equivalent of nine brigade combat teams.

“This is my second year in this position. I have been on quite a few missions, and we have already brought in numerous teams into the theaters. It feels great to flex

our battalion’s abilities to assist in a region that we don’t normally operate in,” said Maj. Michelle Su, the mission commander for the RSOM. “These missions are important and serve as a beginning step into helping many units accomplish their mission while in theater,” said Su, “These missions help the U.S. fulfill its objectives in Europe.”

The ports of Gdansk and Gdynia on the Baltic Sea in Northern Poland are important geographically. Recently, Gdansk was named part of the top ten commercial

ports in Europe due to the volume of cargo it can process and in 2021 it was named the largest EU port on the Baltic Sea, according to the Port of Gdansk website.

“The accomplishment of this mission here in Poland feels great. I was a mobility officer for a rotational unit last year. So, I was on the receiving end where my cargo was coming off the ship. Now, I am on the other side and assisting the unit by helping them efficiently and effectively receive their cargo. We are the foothold for when units come into the theater. Making sure

this mission is done right, on time, and in the right location is paramount to the future operations this unit will conduct during their time here,” Van Fleet said.

National Guard members continue LA wildfire response

Story and photo by Sgt.

U.S. Army Sgt. Ricardo Hernandez watched from a cross street as sporadic traffic passed on the Pacific Coast Highway near Pacific Palisades. The late afternoon sun glinted off his sunglasses as a man on a bicycle rode up to his location.

A light-wheeled vehicle mechanic with the 149th Chemical Company, California Army National Guard, Hernandez’s duty — staffing a traffic control point — was different than his normal duties under the hood.

The man on the bike, a resident looking for updated information on wildfires that devastated the Los Angeles area, was like many who approached Hernandez at the checkpoint.

“I referred him to a website where he could find that information,” he said.

Hernandez was one of the roughly 600 Soldiers of Task Force 49, made up primarily of Soldiers with the California Army Guard’s 49th Military Police Brigade and responsible for safety and security in many areas impacted by the wildfires.

“We currently have two missions: traffic control points and we also have roving patrols,” said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Manny Arino, commander of TF 49.

Both missions are designed to prevent both looting and people coming back into areas that local authorities haven’t yet cleared, he said.

“Because of the damage that they have in these areas, it’s just not safe for the public to come in right now,” said Arino.

More than 2,700 National Guard

members have responded to the wildfires. In addition to security operations, Guard members have assisted in firefighting efforts on the ground and in the air.

Ground efforts were undertaken by Task Force Rattlesnake, a joint task force that integrates California Army and Air National Guard members with CALFIRE, the state agency responsible for wildfire response.

“CALFIRE offers us facilities, training, captains and stuff like that, while the California National Guard offers the Soldiers who volunteer to go out there and fight wildfires,” said U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Deng Deng, with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 79th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, California Army Guard and a member of TF Rattlesnake.

Air National Guard aircrews flew C-130 Hercules aircraft equipped with the Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System. Nestled in the cargo area of the aircraft, MAFFS can drop 3,200 gallons of fire retardant or water in seconds.

“Basically, we provide an aerial firefighting capability, again, in support of civil assets,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Matt Schwegel, a C-130 pilot with the 152nd Airlift Wing, Nevada Air National Guard.

Four units — three Air Guard and one Air Force Reserve — fly the MAFFS mission with eight aircraft.

The Air Guard units include Schwegel’s unit and the 146th Airlift Wing, California Air National Guard, and the Wyoming Air National Guard’s 153rd Airlift Wing. All eight aircraft and crews were called in to support wildfire response efforts in the Los Angeles area.

For Schwegel, it’s been a rewarding mission.

“It’s our opportunity to actually make a difference and help out,” he said. “It’s gratifying to be a part of that, to be able to do something and not stay in Nevada and just watch it transpire when you know you have a capability and a skill set to help.”

It’s also a challenging and exciting mission to fly.

“It’s a rush,” said Schwegel. “Our performance envelope is extremely tight. On this, we’re within 10 to 20 knots of our stall speed, we’re max gross weight, and on the drop, we’re 150 feet-ish off the terrain, which is about half of the altitude of a normal tactical airdrop that we do as part of our combat airlift mission set.”

Schwegel said flying the MAFFS mission is a direct application of skills used to fly combat missions, and it hones the pilots’ abilities.

“It brings the best out of our pilots’ flying in that you’re really focused on flying tight parameters because there’s not a lot of slop, not a lot of forgiveness,” he said.

Guard members also participated

in mop-up efforts after the fires, ensuring burning embers were extinguished and repairing damage from initial firefighting efforts.

“The goal is to clean up the mess that was made by initial attack efforts,” said CALFIRE Capt. Albert Galli, who led a clean-up crew consisting of California Army Guard Soldiers and CALFIRE personnel.

During firefighting, firebreaks, or lines, were built using bulldozers and hand crews to stop the fire’s progress. Those lines are no longer needed in areas where the fire is out; remediation prevents further damage.

“What we don’t want to have happen is when the rains come, we get a large water flow down these dozer lines and these hand lines,” said Galli. “We can mitigate any flooding issues or mud flows by diverting it with water bars or completely covering up these dozer lines and hand lines.”

The integration between CALFIRE and the Guard is “almost seamless,” said Galli.

“Because CALFIRE is a paramili-

tary organization, working with the military just seems to work,” he said. “Some of the lingo and the jargon is different, but as far as forming up and performing a mission, we all are good at our job, which is just achieving a common goal.”

Galli said he loves working with Guard Soldiers and Airmen.

“I know that just a few days after training and meeting them I can give them a simple task and they’re going to perform it well,” he said, adding that Guard members don’t need a lot of training.

“They already have a lot of the knowledge and the experience, not in firefighting, but in life experience and combat training,” said Galli. “And so, they just are ready to work, and I think that’s impressive.”

Some Guard members were also personally affected by the wildfires.

“I have two Soldiers that were impacted, directly impacted, by this fire. One of them lost his house,” said Arino, adding he told them they didn’t need to be part of the response mission.

“They wanted to come out,” he said. “They wanted to come out here and be part of the mission. Because, again, these are Soldiers from your community and they, they’re personally invested in making sure their communities are safe.”

Deng, who was part of Galli’s clean-up crew, agreed.

“It’s been amazing, honestly, not just helping people out of fires, but preventing fires from happening,” he said. “Being in the National Guard, you feel like, hey, California is my home. California is what I want to protect most. And anything that’s going on here, I am willing to volunteer and help out as much as I can.”

ABC IN KMC: Ingenious German Inventions

Germany has an astonishing history of innovation and has given the world many ground breaking inventions and dis coveries. Some of the notable German contributions you may not even know about are described below. Let’s take a look at a wide selection ranging from aspirin, to bicycles and computers, X-ray machines, zeppelins and a cool summer treat!

Printing Press: Invented by Johannes Gutenberg in the mid15th century, the printing press revolutionized the spread of infor mation and knowledge.

Automobile: Karl Benz built the first gasoline-powered automo bile, the Benz Patent-Motorwagen, in 1885, laying the foundation for the modern automotive industry.

But, it was Bertha Benz, Karl’s wife, who played a crucial role in the development and popu larization of the automobile. In 1888, she undertook the first longdistance automobile journey in history, driving the vehicle from Mannheim to Pforzheim and back, covering about 106 kilometers (66 miles). This journey not only demonstrated the practicality and reliability of the automobile but also provided valuable insights into its potential improvements.

nications.

Skyscraper Steel Frame: German Ferdinand Stadler and Frenchman Gustav Eiffel contributed to the development of steelframed skyscrapers, changing urban architecture.

X-Ray Machine: Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen discovered X-rays in 1895, which transformed medical diagnostics.

Electron Microscope: Developed by Ernst Ruska and Max Knoll in the 1930s, this invention allowed scientists to see objects at the atomic level.

Nuclear Fission: Otto Hahn discovered nuclear fission in 1938, which led to the development of nuclear energy and later atomic bombs.

Z3 Computer: Konrad Zuse built the first programmable computer, the Z3, in 1941, paving the way for modern computing.

Geiger Counter: Hans Geiger invented the Geiger counter in 1928, which is used to detect and measure radiation.

Diesel Engine: Rudolf Diesel invented the diesel engine in 1893, which is widely used in transportation and industry.

Phased Array Antenna: Karl Ferdinand Braun invented this in 1905, which led to the development

Airbag: First used in 1981 as optional equipment for the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the airbag has since become a standard safety feature in vehicles.

Aspirin: Developed by Bayer in 1897, aspirin is one of the world’s most widely used medications for pain, fever, and inflammation.

Bicycle: The first early versions of the bicycle, such as the celeripede and Laufmaschine, were developed independently by German inventors in the early 19th century.

Beer Purity Law: In 1516, the Reinheitsgebot (Purity Law) was issued, stipulating that only barley, hops, and water could be used to brew beer. All beer brewed in Germany, and even that in Namibia (a former German colony), is still produced according to this over 500-year old recipe!

C-Leg: Introduced in 1997, the C-Leg is a microprocessor-controlled knee joint that has greatly improved mobility for people with physical disabilities.

Helicopter: Engineer Heinrich

ters in the 1930s and developed a small model helicopter in 1932.

Phonograph: Emil Berliner invented the phonograph, which played a significant role in the development of recorded sound.

Refrigerator: Carl von Linde developed the modern refrigerator, which has had a profound impact on food preservation and storage.

Telephone: Johann Philipp Reis constructed the first device to transmit a voice via electronic signals, laying the groundwork for modern telecommunication. He was a physics teacher and developed a device that transmitted speech (very poorly) in the early 1860s. He called his apparatus a “telefon,” the first time the term was used to refer to an apparatus that converts sounds to electrical signals, but never sought a patent nor continued to further develop his idea. Therefore, credit goes to Alexander Graham Bell as being the inventor of the telephone.

Airships: The invention of airships is credited to Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, a German engineer and former military officer. He developed the first rigid airship, known as the Zeppelin, which he successfully flew for the first time on July 2, 1900. His work laid the foundation for the development of airships and significantly

air aviation. Zeppelins were used for various purposes, including passenger transport and military reconnaissance, before their popularity declined after a series of accidents, such as the Hindenburg disaster in 1937.

Germany has been home to several pioneers of aviation. One of the most notable is Otto Lilienthal, often referred to as the “father of aviation.” He conducted extensive gliding experiments in the late 19th century and made the first well-documented, successful flights with gliders. His work laid the foundation for the development of heavier-than-air aircraft and certainly served as an inspiration to the Wright brothers.

Not only men contributed to amazing inventions, but there is also a row of glorious female heroes who paved the way across various fields.

Coffee Filter: Melitta Bentz invented the first coffee filter in 1908, tired of the coffee grounds in her cup. She perforated a brass pot and used blotting paper to create a simple yet effective filter.

Parachute Packet: Katharina Paulus developed the “parachute packet” in 1913, a compact and potable parachute that saved many lives during World War I.

Eyeglass Lenses: Marga

of eyeglass lenses during her career at Schott glass company. Magic Numbers in Nuclear Physics: Maria Goeppert-Mayer developed a model to explain the “magic numbers” in nuclear physics, which earned her the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1963.

Comets and Nebulae: Caroline Lucretia Herschel excelled as an astronomer and discovered eight comets and 14 nebulae as early as 1786 to 1797.

Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky was an architect who designed the Frankfurt Kitchen, a revolutionary space-saving kitchen for urban housing in 1926.

Last but not least, the most delicious “invention” of all!

Spaghetti Eis! Seventeen-yearold Italian Dario Fontanella, son of an Italian immigrant, worked in his father’s ice-cream parlor in Mannheim. On April 6, 1969 he had the coolest idea of his life when he served the first dish of his icy creation. Unfortunately, young Dario failed to put a patent on his creation, but it quickly became a popular ice-cream dish throughout the nation. Thanks to Dario, we can enjoy creamy vanilla icecream in strings, whipped cream and fruity sauce topped with white chocolate sprinkles as a refreshment in the summer!

PHIL, THE GENESIS & PHIL COLLINS TRIBUTE SHOW

FEB. 8, 8:30 P.M., CONGRESS CENTER RAMSTEIN

Musically and visually incredibly close to the original. A pulsating show with energetic live musicians, garnished with coordinated lighting and video technology. At the center is a front man with charisma, wit, charm - and the “real” voice. With “Phil” you can dream to the perfectly played music of Phil Collins and Genesis - or really take off dancing. “Phil”: For many fans and critics, the eleven-piece group led by singer and entertainer Jürgen ‘Phil’ Mayer is currently the best Phil Collins and Genesis tribute band in Europe. The band from the Karlsruhe area authentically performs the versatile and complex music of the British mega star. Tickets: https://congresscenterramstein.reservix.de/p/reservix/event/2274543

GOLD FEVER IN TRIER

PERMANENT EXHBIT, RHEINISCHES LANDESMUSEUM, TRIER

In 196 A.D.: In the turmoil of the civil war under Emperor Septimius Severus, an unknown person hid an immense sum of money in the form of around 2,650 Roman gold coins in a cellar in Trier - he was no longer able to retrieve it. The treasure remained in the earth until September 1993. After 1,800 years, the treasure was rediscovered during excavation work - a sensation. Gold fever broke out in Trier, and the coins ended up in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum. On Oct. 8, 2019: Two burglars entered the museum to steal the coin treasure of 18.5 kg of pure gold. The police thwarted the robbery attempt - the perpetrators fled without taking anything but caused a lot of damage. The coin cabinet was destroyed and had to be closed for the public. Since September 2022 the coin exhibit has been open again and can be visited. In addition to the coin exhibit, there are several other themed displays from the Roman era in Trier. Forming healthier habits in the new year

Most of us make resolutions on New Year’s Day and, despite our best intentions, give up on them well before the first of February.

But did you know that it takes 21 days to form a new habit and 6 months to make it a routine? If you start today, by early summer, you’ll be well on your way to a healthier, happier you!

Try these easy tricks to create 3 new habits that, in just 21 days, will produce a real and lasting change well into the new year.

1. Drink more water

Start your day with a nice, big glass of water — before your coffee or tea. This simple trick will rehydrate you after a long (or short) night of sleep and help wake up your body and your brain! Even a 2% level of dehydration can have a significant impact on your physical and mental performance.

Keep a water bottle nearby

After you have your first glass of water, fill a water bottle and keep it with you. Keep it in the car, in your sports bag, in your purse, and on your desk. Refill and sip it all day. Aim to drink half of your ideal weight in ounces everyday. For example, if your ideal weight is 120 pounds, drink

60 oz. of water. That’s less than 4 16 oz. glasses a day. If you have one before breakfast, you’re already 25 percent there! Good start!

2. Get active Exercise safely this Winter

You don’t have to work out 2 hours a day at the gym but you do need to do something that gets your heart rate up… every day. Bike, hike, walk, jog, belly dance, ski, whatever!

Mix up your routine to keep it interesting. Some people like to exercise first thing, before the day gets away from them. It helps them feel energized and ready to take on the day. For others, a mid-day break is what they need to power through the afternoon doldrums. I like to workout at the end of the day to release stress. It helps me refocus and enjoy time with my family. Figure out what time works best for you.

Schedule it — in writing

Add your workout plan right into your daily planner. Commit to it just as you would a doctor appointment or an important meeting. Think of it as putting your oxygen mask on first so you can help others. It’s that important! Get your family on board and find a buddy to help keep you accountable. You’ll be helping each other!

Sneak “small acts of fitness” into your day

Small changes can really add up to big results when you choose action over inaction. If it helps, just pretend you have a doctor’s prescription for these behaviors and you’ll need to report back on how well you followed his or her orders.

Always take the stairs, never the elevator or escalator. Park as far as you can from the office, the mall entrance, the dry cleaner and the grocery store and walk. Think of your heavy grocery bags, or small children, as weights and make each “lift” count! At home, take the stairs 2 at a time, slowly. Believe me, these small acts of fitness really add up!

3. Plan meals

If you know what your menu plan is for the week, you won’t be tempted to impulse buy or opt for pizza. It saves time and money too!

Make a weekly grocery list and stick to it

Replenish your staples and choose organic, lean meats, seasonal fruits and veggies, and fresh herbs that fit your menu. Only buy what you need. Avoid processed food, sodas and junk food. Keep a variety of healthy foods at home for quick, easy snacks and meals.

Make “Dinner in a Bowl” with pasta, protein and veggies

I know, you’ve probably been told that pasta is fattening and that carbs are bad. The truth is that pasta is a complex carbohydrate that can be a nutritious part of healthy diet. If you balance the carbs in the pasta with high-quality, lean protein, good fats and lots of healthy, fresh veggies, then it becomes the perfect nutrient-rich mix that you need to replenish your energy reserves and nourish your body. Pasta tastes great too.

Try one healthy pasta recipe once a week

If you do this for a full 6 months, you’ll have 24 easy and nutritious pasta recipes that you can rely on. Recipes you can easily adapt to

what’s in season, what’s available locally and your family’s preferences. You can include a few special occasion recipes too like meaty lasagna and pasta Alfredo for those times when you need to feed a crowd or just want some serious comfort food! Remember to watch the portion size, savor the meal slowly, follow with a healthy, fresh salad and enjoy the moment…la dolce vita (the sweet life).

Here’s an easy recipe to start you off:

Recipe: Spaghetti with Garlic, Shrimp and Parsley

This quick and easy pasta recipe for spaghetti with garlic, shrimp and parsley is one of my go-to favorites for a fast, delicious school night dinner or light weekend supper. It serves up high-quality shrimp protein, heart-healthy olive oil, immune-boosting garlic, vitamin C from the lemon, and antioxidants, minerals and dietary fiber from the fresh parsley…and tastes amazing! The key to this recipe is to use fresh herbs, real lemon and not to overcook the shrimp…you just want to warm them and blend the flavors. I keep several bags of frozen shrimp in my freezer just for this dish.

Ingredients (serves 4 for dinner, 6 for lunch)

• 1 lb. (16 oz.) package of spaghetti

• 1 (24 oz.) package frozen, (cooked and peeled) large shrimp (35-45 pieces)

• 2 tbs. extra virgin olive oil

• 2-3 tbs. butter

• 2-3 cloves of fresh garlic, minced (more to taste)

• A handful of FRESH flat-leaf Italian parsley, rinsed, dried and rough chopped

• 1-2 tbs. FRESH lemon juice (1/2 a lemon)

• 1 tsp. fresh lemon zest

• Salt and fresh-cracked black pepper to taste

Instructions

Put a large pot of water on to boil. (Use 4 quarts/liters for a pound of pasta.)

While the water is heating place

the frozen shrimp in a colander in the sink and run lukewarm water over them until thawed, about 5 minutes. (Don’t leave them in a bowl of water, the water should be moving). Once the shrimp are thawed, remove the tails (optional). Do this under running water to make it easier. Place the clean shrimp on paper towels to dry.

Once the water is at a rolling boil, add 2 tbs of salt and drop in the pasta. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking. Follow the cooking time on the package (about 10 minutes) or until just al dente (firm to the bite). The pasta will continue to cook once combined with the sauce so slightly underdone is perfect!

While the pasta is cooking add the olive oil to a medium-size cold saucepan and turn the heat to medium-high. Add the minced garlic and stir until fragrant, about a minute or two. Don’t allow the garlic to brown or it will be bitter. Add the butter, half of the fresh parsley, the lemon juice, and the lemon zest. Season lightly with salt and fresh-cracked black pepper and stir. Add in the shrimp and toss until well coated. Reduce the heat to low. You just want the flavors to blend and the shrimp to warm. You do NOT want to cook the shrimp. If your pasta will take a while, just take the shrimp pan off the heat and let it sit. The flavors will continue to blend.

A minute before the pasta is done, carefully reserve a 1/2 cup of the starchy pasta water and set aside. Drain the pasta and add the hot pasta back into the hot pot, off the heat. Add the shrimp and sauce, scraping with a rubber spatula to get every tasty bit. Toss gently. Add the pasta water, a splash at a time, to smooth out the sauce to a lovely, satiny finish. Add the remainder of the fresh parsley. Serve immediately with a green salad, crisp white wine and fresh bread.

To make it a meal in a bowl, add a cup of fresh or frozen peas, broccoli or asparagus pieces to the pasta water during the last 2 minutes. Drain with the pasta and toss with the sauce.

Sergeant Major of the Army visits Medical

Readiness Command, Europe

The Sergeant Major of the Army, Michael R. Weimer (center), visited U.S. Army Medical Readiness Command, Europe, Sembach Kaserne, Jan. 23. During his visit, Weimer met with senior non-commissioned officers and received a briefing on the Medical Readiness Command, Europe mission. The visit also provided Weimer the opportunity to meet and talk with Soldiers assigned to the command. Weimer is visiting various Army commands around Europe to learn more about their mission and to talk with U.S. Soldiers stationed across the theater.

CROSSWORD

My first visit to Zell am See was during the summer a few years ago for a group mountain bike adventure in Leogang. We explored the region, traveled to Zell and discovered what it had to offer after our last biking tour for the season.

We returned in December during Christmas and checked into a small villa. The owner even made us a Christmas dinner of goose, baked trout, potatoes, vegetables, and shots of Austrian Stroh Rum that gave a kick strong enough to keep us warm for several hours while out playing in the snow.

This amazing town by the lake has a public transportation system that is so easy to use and convenient you never have to worry about getting lost, caught up in traffic or dealing with challenging driving conditions during the height of the winter sport season.

There are ski busses that constantly run to the cable car lifts of the Kitzsteinhorn glacier and the Schmittenhöhe. Most stops are located either on the same street of your accommodations or just a short walk away.

Kitzsteinhorn glacier

With over 60 runs for beginner to advanced skiers and snowboarders, this area has something for everyone. To let you know in advance, the gondola ride was a bit long and high for some folks in my group. The gondola takes you over very steep valleys and can

tend to sway a bit when the glacier winds pick up during a snowstorm, so this ride is not for the faint at heart. The winds and fog can change weather conditions quickly, so always be prepared.

For more information, visit www. bergfex.com

Schmittenhöhe

77 kilometers of slopes for beginner to advanced skiers and snowboarders. This has always been my favorite area because of its weather conditions. The winds are relatively low due to the lower altitude, and it faces south, which places it on the sunny side of Austria, giving you a more pleasurable experience without spending your time on the slopes not being able to see where you’re

going, trying to stay upright in the wind. Also, the gondola ride is shorter and easy to take.

For more information, visit www. schmitten.at/en

If you are not a downhill skier or snowboarder there are plenty of other activities awaiting you in this region. Winter hiking around the lake, cross country skiing, snowshoeing trails, sledding, and more are just minutes away from the center of Zell. If you don’t want to play in the snow you can spend the weekend relaxing and staying warm in the region’s two major spa facilities.

Tauern Spa Kaprun

The Tauern Spa is huge with approximately 20,000 square

meters of space with 11 pools, as well as many saunas and steam baths and amazing food and views of the surrounding mountains. You can also have a drink while taking a dip in the outdoor saltwater pool to finish off the day.

For more information visit www. tauernspakaprun.com/en

The Zell am See Leisure Center

This facility’s indoor pool has water slides, diving platforms, relaxation areas as well as an organic sauna, a bistro, and infrared cabin. If you want to give ice skating a try, the rink is located just next to the center.

For more information visit www.100freizeit.com

Things to consider:

• Check snow and weather conditions first thing in the morning. High winds, fog, and snow can take you by surprise within minutes.

• Check for updates on transportation fares, rental fees as well as closures due to weather.

• What to wear: Warm clothing, a hat, helmet, gloves or mittens, snow pants, winter jacket, snow boots, and goggles.

• What to bring: First aid kit, sunscreen, water, snacks, a change of socks, gloves, hat, cell phone, and euro cash. Plastic is not accepted everywhere.

Dos and Don’ts:

• Do have snow chains and emergency kits in your vehicle. Also, water and snacks to tide you over in case of a long delay on the road.

• Do take lessons if you are a first-time skier or snowboarder

• Don’t ignore the markers along the slopes with do not enter markings that are blocked by nets or tape.

• Don’t venture out alone especially when the weather takes a turn for the worse.
