by Jordan Perch contributing writer toELECTION SEASON REMINDER:
by 86th Airlift Wing Public AffairsWith election season, service members and civilian personnel are encouraged to review current Department of Defense and federal regulations regarding both participation in political activities and the display of flags on DOD Facilities.
Knowing the Do’s and Don’ts this political season will ensure Service members and DOD civilians carry out the duties of citizenship and exhibit patriotism and pride appropriately.
Political Activities
DOD Directive 1344.10, Political Activities by Members of the Armed Forces, provides detailed regulations as to what actions are permitted and prohibited by service members.
Guidance states, “It is DOD policy to encourage members of the Armed Forces (hereafter referred to as “members”) (including members on active duty, members of the Reserve Components not on active duty, members of the National Guard even when in a non-Federal status, and retired members) to carry out the obli-
gations of citizenship. In keeping with the traditional concept that members on active duty should not engage in partisan political activity, and that members not on active duty should avoid inferences that their political activities imply or appear to imply official sponsorship, approval, or endorsement.”
Service members CAN:
• Register to vote and actively vote in elections
• Express a personal opinion about candidates and issues
• Donate money to a political party, organization or committee
• Display a political bumper sticker on the member’s private vehicle
• Attend political rallies as a spectator when off duty and not in uniform, and no inference or appearance of official endorsement can reasonably be drawn
Active duty service members CANNOT:
• Express a personal opinion as if it is that of the DOD
• Participate, including speaking,
in partisan political events
• Engage in partisan political fundraising activities (except as a donor)
• Display political signage in a work area or on-base residence
• Run for political office without approval
• For a thorough list of permissible and prohibited activities, please consult DOD Directive 1344.10.
DOD civilian employees are also encouraged to participate in the political process. The Hatch Act (5 U.S.C. 7321-7326) serves to detail permissible and restricted political activities for the government civilian workforce. Because the application of the rules varies depending on an employee’s position or office, it is extremely important that employees who are engaging in political activity know which rules apply to them.
Further details on actions allowable for DOD civilian employees, please refer to The U.S. Office of Special Counsel’s site on Hatch Act regulations.
Flag Selection and Display on Military Installations
DOD guidance issued in 2020 clarifies the flags that are approved for use on military installations and the acceptable settings under which a flag may be displayed. The American flag is the principal flag on display on military installations. Service members and civilians are encouraged to display the American flag, in its unaltered form, widely.
In addition to the American flag, service members and civilian employees are authorized to display or depict representational flags that promote unity and esprit de corps, including:
• Flags of U.S. States and Territories and the District of Columbia
• Military Service flags
• General Officer flags
• Presidentially-appointed, Senate-confirmed civilian flags
• Senior Executive Service (SES) and Military Departmentspecific SES flags
• The POW/MIA flag
• Flags of other countries, for which the United States is an
ally or partner, or for official protocol purposes
• Flags of organizations in which the United States is a member (e.g., NATO)
• Ceremonial, command, unit, or branch flags or guidons
This guidance applies to public displays or depictions of flags by service members and civilian employees in all Department of Defense workplaces, common access areas, and public areas, to include military family housing. Please consult the Ramstein Legal Office if you have additional questions.

Countdown to D-Day – 6 days
Even if they survived the German flak and managed to cross the English channel, C-47 crews were not yet home safe. The conditions over England could be treacherous, especially for aircraft damaged by flak, as one 435th pilot learned the hard way. 1st Lt. Jim “Happy” Shive had completed his paradrop during D-Day and was piloting his C-47 back to England. The weather was bad and visibility poor, so Shive decided to divert to Welford Airfield. They’d taken heavy flak over the Rhine and were now flying with a basketball-sized hole in one wing. It was standard at the time for landing aircraft to keep their tails up until the end of the runway to allow following aircraft to land as quickly as possible. Just as Lt. Shive broke out from the low ceiling over the runway, there was another C-47 right below them. The other pilot gunned his engines to get out of the way but it was too late. Shive’s C-47 landed right on top of the other one, with the propeller ripping through Shive’s cockpit floorboard. Thankfully both aircrews escaped unhurt, though both aircraft were a total loss. Time traveling with 24 IS through the years
by Tech. Sgt. Megan Beatty 86th Airlift Wing Public AffairsThe water was ice cold with rough, choppy waves crashing on the beach. The early morning moon shed just enough light for thousands of men to hide in the cover of darkness. Many of the men — some hardened veterans, some barely 18 years old — silently prayed while they awaited the order to begin Operation Overlord.
Operation Overlord, more commonly known as D-Day, was the largest land, sea and airborne invasion in history. More than 156,000 service members braved the frigid waters and hostile airspace to storm the beaches of Normandy, France, June 6, 1944.
“I couldn't see anything because I was hunkered down in the boat as we went in, but I do remember seeing the looks on the faces of the young men,” said U.S. Army Pfc. Jesse A. Beazley, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division combat rifleman. "We had kidded in life like Soldiers do, but all at once it got completely silent. I thought of my home, my mom, my dog and my friends. I wondered how in the world I came to be here in this situation: a young man, realizing that probably I didn't have much chance to live because I knew what was ahead of us.”
The invasion lasted until June 24, and is considered to be the turning point of World War II. The successful invasion meant the Allied powers could finally gain control and begin the end of the war. However, the success of Operation
Overlord depended heavily on months of planning and behind the scenes work.
Enter the 33rd Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron, known today as the 24th Intelligence Squadron at Ramstein Air Base. While members of the U.S. Army Air Corps were limited to the technology of the time, they played a vital role in informing military leaders as the invasion was planned.
How many people are there? What kinds of equipment do they have? How far away are they? What can Allied warfighters expect when they get there? The answers to these questions were essential to advancing Allied forces and minimizing the loss of life.
The 33rd PRS was able to answer these questions by sending photographers into the Axis powers’ airspace, usually in unarmed aircraft or aircraft ill equipped for air-to-air combat, to take pictures of the war zone.
“They were flying in contested airspace unable to defend themselves to get some pictures and hopefully get back to give them to analysts,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Jacob Scott, 24th IS unit deployment manager. “Over time we became more efficient by putting the equipment into the belly of the plane, but we started basically as just a guy looking out a window and taking pictures with a camera.”
Though the idea of collecting information about opposing forces is not a new military strategy, the way the information was collected has changed with the
advancements of technology. The U-2 Dragon Lady, a high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft, completed its first test flight just 10 years after the end of World War II.
Other intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance platforms and sensors over the years include the RQ-4 Global Hawk, MQ-1 Predator, and MQ-9 Reaper remotely piloted aircraft.
“Prior to about three years ago everyone focused on their own mission, and we did our mission [independently],” Scott said. “I guarantee there was overlap. When we started to modernize and created the Air Force Distributed Common Ground System, we became what we call sensor agnostic. We will use anything we have available to us to answer requests for information, fill in the gaps, and confirm our calls.”
The Air Force Distributed Common Ground System is the Air Force’s primary ISR planning and direction, collection, processing and exploitation, analysis and dissemination weapon system. The weapon system employs a global communications architecture connecting multiple intelligence platforms and sensors.
As time went on and ISR technology advanced, the adversaries the U.S. focused on shifted from sovereign states to the Global War on Terrorism. Scott mentioned many ISR specialists at the time were more experienced with conventional military concepts rather than the guerrilla warfare tactics being used when he enlisted in the Air Force.
A U.S. Army Air Corps Lockheed F-5 Lightning aircraft flies over Europe circa June 1944 to perform photo reconnaissance during WWII. Intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance Airmen collected imagery from aircraft to provide senior leaders with information to plan future military operations in the area. Courtesy photos
“My generation went through counterinsurgency and the Global War on Terror and we adapted to that,” Scott said. “Now, as we transition out of the Global War on Terror and into looking at our near-peer adversaries we are back to uniformed personnel, aircraft, tanks and things like that. My Airmen and young staff sergeants — the ones that are doing the mission day in and day out — are now the experts.”
Scott emphasized the importance of knowing the roots of the squadron. He encourages ISR Airmen not to get discouraged although many of the missioncentric wins may not be able
to be shared with friends and family.
Many believe history repeats itself. Whether providing aerial photographs of Normandy or analyzing information collected from modern-day ISR platforms, the 24th IS continues to accelerate change and shape the information space across Europe and Africa, while playing a critical role in the Department of Defense’s mission — no matter the adversary.

US, NATO forces showcase tactics, integration during Exercise Astral Knight 2024
Story and photos by Capt. Jacob Murray 435th Air Ground Operations Wing
NATO’s Exercise Astral Knight 2024 concluded in Gdynia, Poland, demonstrating joint force interoperability and strategic readiness between U.S. forces and NATO Allies. The exercise allowed the incorporation of the Special Warfare Teaming Concept, involving the Second Air Support Operations Squadron from Vilseck; the 57th Rescue Squadron from Aviano, Italy; and members of Polish Special Forces.
The exercise emphasized USAFE-AFAFRICA’s commitment to Agile Combat Employment strategies, integrating advanced sensor technology, and refining multinational tactical operations designed to enhance movement, maneuverability, and security across NATO territories.
allows us to leverage our respective strengths,” said Capt. John Miller, 2 ASOS Flight Commander of Alpha Flight. “This exercise effectively assessed the current state of Air Force Special Warfare Teaming, allowing us to inform the development of the Special Warfare enterprise.” This year’s Astral Knight also focused on testing and improving joint operational tactics, involving not only U.S. forces but also enhancing cooperation with Polish military units and other NATO partners. The seamless collaboration forged stronger alliances and demonstrated NATO’s capability to defend its members against any threat.
The Special Warfare Teaming Concept not only showcased tactical abilities but also strategic foresight in preparing NATO forces for future challenges.
Throughout the training in Gdynia, Poland, the Special Warfare teams, comprising of Tactical Air Control Party members and Pararescuemen, demonstrated the effectiveness of their combined operations. These operations are aimed at ensuring aircrews and Airmen are wellprepared to deliver lethal combat power and conduct precise recovery operations in contested environments.
“Our presence here at Astral Knight 24 aimed to refine and test the Special Warfare Teaming
strategy,” said Tech. Sgt. Phonchai Hansen, 2 ASOS Flight Chief of Alpha Flight. “By combining our TACP capabilities with the expert medical and recovery skills of the PJs, we've created a dynamic force capable of addressing multifaceted threat scenarios effectively."
The exercise featured simulated, dynamic targeting missions and personnel recovery drills, dur-
ing which TACPs and PJs executed coordinated responses to simulated threats. One of the scenarios included a pilot emergency ejection from an F-16 and required immediate extraction from a hostile environment, testing the cohesion and interoperability of the newly formed teams.
“The integration of TACPs and PJs into a cohesive unit
“The gives us the ability to operate with our NATO allies in some pretty complex scenarios,” said a PJ participant. “This greatly improves our collective security and ensures we are always ready to respond to threats swiftly and efficiently.”
The lessons learned and relationships built in Gdynia, Poland, will help future NATO exercises and operations, and further the success of the Special Warfare Teaming Concept — marking a pivotal advancement in military operations, enhanced cooperative capabilities and strategic deployment readiness across NATO.

For the first time ever, the Ramstein Airman Leadership School hosted Class 24-5, which was led by an all-female instructor team at Kapaun Air Station, from April 15 to May 16.
The team included six noncommissioned officers from both Kisling Noncommissioned Officer Academy and ALS, and one U.S. Army member from the 7th Army NCO Academy at Grafenwoehr.
“There is a unique blend of personalities and strong sense of unity at the Ramstein Airman Leadership School,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Kenda Gallo, Kisling NCOA instructor.
“This dynamic fosters a supportive and empowering learning environment for students and the collaborative atmosphere reinforced my confidence as a leader and commitment to fostering an inclusive work space where everyone has a valuable contribution.”
Fifty-four students graduated, five of
whom were recognized as distinguished graduates, and two members received academic achievement awards. Their combined efforts were lauded at their graduation ceremony by the previous 86th Airlift Wing commander as one of the best classes to pass through the schoolhouse.
“Seeing strong, capable female role models at this level of PME can inspire and motivate our Airmen, reinforcing the importance of diversity in our military leadership,” Gallo added. “I learned so much from each of their diverse experiences and am proud to have pushed this class with these ladies as my teammates.”
ALS is the first level of Professional Military Education enlisted Airmen experience. It is designed to be an entry level leadership enhancement course to prepare Senior Airmen for positions of greater responsibility by reinforcing their ability to lead, follow and manage while also gaining a broader understanding of the military profession and their role within the Air and Space Forces.
Kindergraves Memorial honors 451 American infants
Senior Airman Madelyn Keech 86th Airlift Wing Public AffairsA ceremony was held at the American Kindergraves Memorial at the Kaiserslautern City Cemetery in Kaiserslautern, May 18.
The event, held annually each year on the Saturday after Mother’s Day, memorialized 451 American infants who died shortly after birth while their families were stationed in Germany 1952-1971.
“We are dedicated to hold this event each year to remember the children and to honor the sacrifices of their parents,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Bradley Green, U.S. Air Forces in Europe band member and Kindergraves Project officer. “We all recognize the parents who suffered through the pain and agony of losing their child and then having to leave their loved ones behind.”
The children are buried in the heart of the Kaiserslautern City Cemetery where families have a place to mourn the loss of their infant. At the time of their deaths, transporting the departed stateside was not possible because the families would be required to cover the costs. Now, the military pays for deceased dependents to be returned home.
The Kaiserslautern Kindergraves Memorial Foundation was established in 1986 to upkeep the memorial site, organize annual ceremonies to honor the children who passed, and serve as a resource for the families who lost their loved ones.
“This is such a place of remembrance,” said Manuel Steinbrenner, Kaiserslautern City Mayor’s Office counselor. “At that time, it was an important concern with the city of Kaiserslautern to create such a space, a special place of remem-
brance, where the deceased children rest in peace. The death of a loved one weighs heavily, especially when it is a child. We therefore have a special obligation to remember the 451 young people who were only granted such a short life.”
Those who attended the ceremony were families of the children, local officials and members of the military community. Both a U.S. Army chaplain and a German chaplain blessed the graves before attendees placed wreaths, prayed and observed a moment of silence. The bugle call “Taps” was played, signifying the end of this year’s ceremony.
“This memorial event demonstrates enduring love for our children and teaches us to cherish each day we have together,” said U.S. Army Col. Reid E. Furman, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz commander. “This ceremony also commemorates the love, respect and sympathy between both the German and U.S. communities have for these 451 infants laid to rest here. Losing a child is one of the most traumatic and painful experiences but it can be even more difficult when it happens away from home or without the chance to bring a child back to the United States.”
USAG Rheinland-Pfalz BOSS program celebrates Single Soldier Day
Story
and photos by Linda Lambiotte U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Public AffairsU.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz’s Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers program held a Single Soldier Day at Minick Field and the Hall of Champions on Smith Barracks, May 10.
The event, open to all single Soldiers, married individuals on unaccompanied orders, and single parents (all ranks, both officer and enlisted) featured a variety of
activities including flag football and basketball tournaments, cornhole games, a dunk tank, tug of war, food trucks, and live music.
The Garrison BOSS program is managed by a senior enlisted advisor, MWR advisor and BOSS president. The senior enlisted advisor for USAG Rheinland-Pfalz is Command Sgt. Maj. Raymond Wrensch, who provided remarks as the day of activities began.
“Sometimes I know it feels like it’s you, our single Soldiers, who carry the brunt of the mission day to day,” he said. “I know, I
remember — But today is YOUR day! Take the time, enjoy yourselves, participate, and have fun!”
Soldiers who are single and stationed far from the comforts of home, friends, and family, frequently experience feelings of isolation and loneliness. In response, the BOSS program was established as a vital support system for these individuals. Its primary objective is not only to enhance the morale and well-being of single Soldiers but also to foster retention and sustain combat readiness.
By focusing on leisure and recreation, community service, and overall quality of life, the BOSS program addresses both the social and mental well-being of single Soldiers, helping them maintain a balanced and fulfilling life despite being far from home. Additionally, BOSS serves an essential role in supporting the chain of command by addressing issues like suicide prevention, equal opportunity, and concerns related to sexual harassment and assault, which may impact single Soldiers.

1st Class Trevor Calvert 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
The Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa Explosive Ordnance Disposal Program Office hosted training for EOD Airmen from Aviano, Ramstein, Spangdahlem, Incirlik and Lakenheath Air Bases, May 1-3.
The three-day course trained Airmen on the capabilities and operation of ShadowBox Alpha and Delta mobile servers running the Android Tactical Awareness Kit. These systems allow data to be passed in real time between devices through a secure connection and without the need for larger infrastructure.
“The training was primarily focused on getting mobile TAK server capabilities to our teams,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Matthew Workoff, HQ USAFE-AFAFRICA EOD advanced programs manager. “The
ShadowBox Alpha and Delta allows them to have greater situational awareness, mapping tools and the ability to pass position location anywhere within the command.”
Airmen across USAFE-AFAFRICA will integrate the newly implemented technology with their MPU5 software-defined radios and AN/PSC-15 secure fly-away kits to enhance their communication capabilities, replacing older models.
“We currently don’t have a real time mapping application or system that we can talk to each other on other than traditional radios,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Airman D’andre Goodson, 786th CES EOD team member. “We really learned this week about how to set these servers up and utilize the new technology we have. This technology gives us the ability to have really good turnover when it comes to getting missions done.”
EOD technicians within the
command can now use this suite of systems to establish and maintain constant communications to and from anywhere in the world. Teams can take photos and videos, and pass that data to other ground units operating locally, or back to the server where leaders can access it for situational awareness.
“In the past, our teams were typically only provided with a single capability, so when that one system goes down, they lose the ability to communicate,” Workoff said. “This new concept provides an entire suite of systems that are robust, self-forming and self-healing, that doesn’t rely on other people. If we can’t receive orders, we can’t execute orders.”
Workoff explained that aging command, control and communication capabilities, translates to less effective mission execution. This new technology will help get the mission done — faster and better.

Get to know the Mediterranean Diet
by Patrick Mayer contributing writer on MilitaryinGermany.comThe Mediterranean Diet (MD for short) is a nutritional recommendation based on foods inspired by traditional dietary patterns from the Mediterranean region of the world. This region consists of countries between Europe, northern Africa and southwestern Asia along the Mediterranean Sea. As this organized nutrition is practiced by more and more people every day, it shouldn’t really be considered a diet but more like a lifestyle.
What is a Mediterranean Diet?
Mediterranean Diet is a selection of foods based on the Mediterranean Diet Food Pyramid. MD requires a high consumption of carbohydrates, fish, olive oil, legumes, whole grain and vegetables; a moderate consumption of dairy products; and a low consumption of meat products. Additionally, it requires foods to be organically grown with no genetically modified organisms and treated with chemicals as less as possible.
Carbohydrates
The main source of energy of MD is carbohydrates but not just any kind. Grains are consumed in the form of whole grain bread, whole grain pasta, whole grain couscous etc. Whole grain is a great source of complex carbohydrates and it has a low Glycemic Index (GI). These carbs provide energy for a longer period of time and don’t raise blood sugar levels (at least not much). This means they don’t provoke insulin spikes. Also, whole grain carbs are rich in vitamins (especially B vitamins), minerals (magnesium & potassium) and fibers. This food group is especially important for feeling full and satiated while enhancing a healthy digestive system.
Starchy vegetables (like potatoes) are also a great source of carbohydrates, especially for people who are physically active. Due to their potassium content, they are very impor-
more than one or two eggs per day. Organic and omega-3 eggs have an excellent highdensity lipoprotein (good cholesterol) and low-density lipoprotein (bad cholesterol) ratio and are high in vitamin A and iron. However, due to their fat content (two medium sized eggs have 12-15g of fats), their daily amount should be limited.
Poultry is a great lean protein and it is consumed once or twice per week. Although red meat is also a good source of protein, it should be consumed only several times a month due to being rich in saturated fats. When cooking red meat, it is a great idea to add lemon juice, garlic, parsley and similar herbs and spices to enhance the flavor. The health benefit of adding lemon juice is that it increases iron absorption.
Balancing your fat intake
tant during periods of extensive sweating. On the other hand, people who are not physically active should limit their intake of starchy vegetables as well as grains.
Other great sources of complex carbohydrates are beans, peas and other legumes. These vegetables provide vitamins and minerals as well as they are an excellent source of digestive fibers. Again, people who are not physically active should limit their legumes intake to keep their carbohydrate intake to desired levels.
Green and Leafy Vegetables
Green and leafy vegetables are consumed as often as possible as they are a rich source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. They have low amounts of complex carbs and are digested very slowly due to their fiber content. Additionally, these veggies require the body to burn more energy during digesting than after digestion. In other words, they literally burn fat. Some examples of green and leafy vegetables are kale, cauliflower, spinach, broccoli, tomatoes, lettuce, zucchini, cucumbers and more.
Packing with protein
The main sources of protein in MD are fish, cottage cheese, low fat cheese, milk, organic and/or omega-3 eggs, poultry and red meat. Fish is consumed sometimes even a few times per day in moderate amounts (200 – 300g per serving). Though it is most healthy to consume fresh fish, it is also okay to eat it salted or smoked or even canned.
It is important to note that most of the fish of the MD are seasonal species such as sardines, anchovies, Atlantic mackerel and similar. These are the best choices of fish because they are low in mercury, cadmium and other pollutants. While tuna and marlins are often considered delicacies, they should not be eaten too often due to their high concentrations of mercury and other toxins.
Eggs are consumed every day, but rarely
In order to function properly, the human body requires approximately one third of saturated fats, one third of monounsaturated fats and one third of polyunsaturated fats. In western nutrition unsaturated fats intake is too low, which can lead to many health issues including high cholesterol levels, diabetes, heart issues and other diseases. Fats in MD are very balanced and come mostly from sources like olive oil, fish oil, fatty fish, nuts, organic eggs, butter (from cattle that graze grass and small bushes), whole fat milk (from cows, sheep, goats etc.), cheese and similar.
Olive oil is full of omega-6 and omega9 and other healthy unsaturated fats, but it (including extra virgin oil) does not contain omega-3. When preparing fish with olive oil and adding lemon juice; garlic; parsley and some green or leafy vegetables, it becomes a delicacy rich in omega-3, omega-6 and omega-9.
Fatty fish are rich in fat soluble vitamins like vitamin D and E. Vitamin A is often present in the liver of various fish species in such a great amount that it may cause vitamin A poisoning. Therefore, care must be taken when consuming fish liver.
Dairy Products
Cottage cheese and low fat cheese are consumed on a daily basis and they both are full of calcium. When cheese is combined with fatty fish (vitamin D), the calcium absorption is increased. When consuming on a regular basis, this helps in avoiding or postponing issues like osteoporosis (a progressive bone disease) and osteomalacia (softening of bones). It also fights against rickets in children.
MD suggests whole fat milk from grass grazing animals like goats, sheep and cows are to be consumed. Unfortunately, lactose intolerant people should avoid milk due to the adverse reaction which may cause abdominal bloating, cramps, flatulence, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. Also people should avoid consuming milk that is rich in iron due to its tendency to block or at least hinder iron absorption.
Fruit intake
Fruits contain solid amounts of simple to medium complex carbohydrates as well as they are a wonderful source of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibers. They should be consumed mostly fresh, but dried or pro-
cessed in various ways are okay too. When on a diet, one should limit fruit intake but should not entirely be avoided. Fruits of the Mediterranean Diet are oranges, tangerines, figs, cherries, various berries, apricots, apples and more.
What to do when craving sweets
Sweets are eaten rarely, once or twice a month, on the Mediterranean Diet. If you do have cravings for sweets and you need some kind of dessert, fruits or a fruit combination is the solution. A fruit salad made out of wild strawberries, blackberries and nectarine with a slice or two of oranges and few drops of lemon is more than enough to satisfy your taste buds. Not to mention, they are just bursting with vitamins, minerals and other healthy nutrients.
The downside
The Mediterranean Diet is obviously a great diet for life, but one must be aware of its drawbacks. The first drawback is the mercury levels in fish. The US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council) regularly update the amount of mercury and other pollutants in foods (including in fish). For example, the FDA’s report from 1990-2010 stated that the average level of mercury in swordfish was 0.995 parts per million (ppm) (3.220 ppm maximum) and in sardines was 0.013 ppm (0.083 ppm maximum). In comparison, 7 ounces of swordfish had the same amount of mercury level as 529 ounces of sardines. I don’t know about you, but I like sardines more and more everyday.
MD’s second drawback is the relatively high intake of carbohydrates coming from grains, legumes and potatoes. It is important to limit your carbohydrate intake especially if you are not very physically active. Weight gain comes from a calorie surplus (even from a balanced nutrition like MD) and very little or no physical activity. Therefore, it is best to monitor your weight once a week and decrease or increase your carb intake accordingly.
The long story short about the Mediterranean Diet
Mediterranean Diet is a balanced diet, plain and simple. It provides the body with needed nutrients in abundance. If one needs to lose weight, simple portion control of certain foods can decrease daily calorie intake. On the other hand, there are no fast foods and similar ‘cheat meals’ when doing the Mediterranean Diet. If you have an urge to cheat, do it for sanity sake. However, don’t do it often (once a month is acceptable) and be sure to continue with your diet right after cheating. MD offers so many opportunities for making delicious meals with limited amount of calories. Many people find that being on the Mediterranean Diet for a long period of time is not a problem at all.

86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron trains with Tunisians at African Lion 2024
Members of the 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron work together with Tunisian Armed Forces counterparts outside a Tunisian L-410 Turbolet during aeromedical
in Tunis, Tunisia, May 2. AL24 marks the 20th anniversary of U.S. Africa Command’s premier joint exercise led by U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa, running from April 19 to May 31
Senegal and Tunisia, with over 8,100 participants from 27 nations and NATO contingents.
The 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, stationed at Ramstein Air Base, transported a U.S. Army Soldier using a Tunisian C-130J Super Hercules aircraft, May 4, from El Aouina Air Base, Tunisia, to Ramstein AB. The transport occurred during the multi-nation exercise African Lion.
African Lion focuses on enhancing readiness between the U.S. and partner nation forces.
This joint all-domain, multicomponent, and multinational exercise, employs a full array of mission capabilities with the goal to strengthen interoperability among participants and set the theater for strategic access.
The 86th AES’ primary objective is to deliver timely and essential enroute medical care to patients, ensuring critical care
between medical treatment facilities.
“The aeromedical evacuation team transported the patient within 12 hours of notification of approved movement,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Dylan Cruse, 86th AES Aeromedical Evacuation Technician.
Additional support was provided by TRANSCOM [U.S. Transportation Command] Patient Movement Requirement Center, Aeromedical Evacuation Control Team, The Army Southern European Task Force in Africa and the U.S. and Tunisian embassies.
The evacuation was critical due to the condition of the soldier and if it had not occurred the situation could have become more serious.
“The service member had a gastrointestinal infection a few days prior and was admitted to a local hospital until the aeromedical evacuation occurred,”
said U.S Air Force Capt. Maria Oliver, 86th AES, clinical simulation element officer in charge.
“The service member had a bacterial infection that resulted in complications to upper and lower extremities.”
Cruse spoke about the hospitality his team was shown by the Tunisian Air Force and how they helped ensure the operation had no hiccups and went according to plan.
“I loved working with the Tunisian Air Force because they were so accommodating and eager to help us complete our mission,” Cruse said. “They went out of their way to help us. If we didn’t have something we needed they made sure we got it and helped us every step of the way.”
Many of these missions are only possible due to Ramstein AB enabling the global gateway and fostering strong relationships between allies and partners.

The Pfalzphilharmonie Kaiserslautern, conducted by Daniele Squeo, will perform Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4 in E-flat major. With his extensive sacred works as well as his symphonic output, Anton Bruckner can be considered one of the most important composers of the late Romantic period. As a personality as well as a musician, he was initially celebrated as an organ virtuoso before also gaining recognition as one of the great symphonists after Ludwig van Beethoven. 2024 marks the 200th anniversary of his birth. To mark the occasion, the Pfalzphilharmonie KL, will perform his 4th Symphony, which the composer himself called the “Romantic”, in a special concert. 1. The Fairy Tale Route
If you are a fan of those famous Brothers Grimm fairy tales, this is a perfect road trip for you! This 370-mile route stretches between the birthplace of the authors in Hanau near Frankfurt to the northern city of Bremen, where the famous story “The Town Musicians of Bremen” takes place.
The route meanders through many of the towns and small places that inspired the Brothers Grimm to write their tales, as well as cities in which the authors spent time living.
There are various nature parks along the way and some very special towns that capitalize on their connections to the famous fairy tales. These include the house of Little Red Riding Hood in Alsfeld, the spa in Bad Wildungen, which has a Snow White Museum, and of course Hameln has a fountain dedicated to the Pied Piper.

The Romantic Road
This is a popular road trip for those who want to spend time with their loved ones. When hotels are open, travelers can stop at romantic, secluded inns to spend the night. Or you can just get a meal and then enjoy the breathtaking countryside along the way.
This 260-mile route starts in Würzburg and ends in Füssen in the German Alps. Along the way, it takes you past Neuschwanstein Castle, one of the most famous castles in the world and the inspiration for Disney’s castle. 4. The Wine Route
The German Wine Route that winds through the Palatine region of Rheinland-Pfalz is the oldest of the tourist wine routes. It begins in Wissembourg in France and traverses the Pfalz north to the House of the German Wine Route in Bockenheim an der Weinstrasse. This is also the finish line of the famous Weinstrasse Marathon, which takes place every two years.
The Wine Route is approximately 85 kilometers long and passes through the beautiful vineyards of towns such as Bad Bergzabern, Edenkoben, Neustadt an der Weinstrasse, Deidesheim, Bad Dürkheim and Grünstadt. For those living in Kaiserslautern it’s possible to dip into the northern points of the route in a day, but to really enjoy this wonderful experience take at least two days to start at the bottom and work your way up. It’s also a very popular cycling route too.

ABC IN KMC: Brooklyn Bridge
by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public AffairsMost people will know Brooklyn’s famous bridge that stretches over the East River and leads to Manhattan. It is not only a beautiful bridge with its 80-meter (262 feet) high granite pillars, but it also symbolizes transatlantic relations and how many immigrants from around the world are anchored into New York City’s history. Did you know that a German engineer from Thuringia designed the fascinating structure that is celebrating its 141st anniversary this year?
Johann (John) Roebling immigrated to the United States in 1831 as a young engineer from the German state of Thuringia and soon specialized in building bridges. He made a name for himself by designing and constructing the Niagara Falls Suspension Bridge, a double-story bridge completed in 1855.
After being stuck in ice on a ferry crossing the East River, Roebling was inspired to build a state-of-the-art bridge connecting Brooklyn to Manhattan and began with his design. Unfortunately, he didn’t live to experience its completion, as he smashed his foot during survey work and died of lockjaw.
His son Washington carried on his work and experimented with a new technique of utilizing pressure chambers. He then became

victim of diving sickness and remained paralyzed, as many others of the time, when exploring the riverbed and could only observe the construction with binoculars from his apartment in Brooklyn.
From father to son to daughter-in-law development and construction of the bridge went on. Emily, Washington’s wife, was not an engineer, but had political zeal and the power of persuasion to keep the curatorium responsible for the construction in a positive and generous mood. She also oversaw daily construction progress and reported back to her paralyzed husband. Over 600 workers
were involved in the construction, 6,740 tons of material were used at a cost of 15 million dollars, a mighty sum of the time.
Emily Warren Roebling became the first person to cross the bridge in a horse-drawn carriage in May 1883, fourteen years after construction start. The long suspension bridge was the first of its kind and was soon declared as the Eighth Wonder of the World.
Shortly after its completion, crowds flocked to the bridge on Memorial Day and a woman got stuck in one of the planks with the heel of her shoes. Her screams led to a mass panic, as people thought that the bridge was collapsing,
and ended with many injured and 12 people being trampled to death.
In an effort to calm the terrified populace, city officials used an unusual and creative way to regain trust. A circus director led his 21 heavy elephants and 17 camels over the bridge on a leisure walk to Manhattan, convincing New Yorker’s that the bridge would hold. Originally built for carriages and pedestrians, it has remained steadfast and been a highlight in New York City for well over a century. It has been designated as a National Historic Landmark and a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
The bridge is 486 meters (1,593 feet) long, has four neogothic pillars of granite and four cable strings of galvanized steel, each 40 centimeters (1.3 feet) thick, to support the splendid structure. About 30,000 pedestrians traverse the bridge on the upper floor with a spectacular view of Manhattan’s skyline daily, with 100,000 vehicles and up to 3,000 bicycles rolling underneath. The 80-meter-high pillars are taller than any church tower in the city, it is one of the few bridges that can be crossed on foot and will always be a jewel on New York City’s crown. The pillars were recently also equipped with LED lights giving the whole bridge a majestic glow.
