Celebrate Easter – the German way by Amanda Hayward Contributing writer Egg painting, festivals, bonfires, Easter games and feasts all partially sum up a traditional German Easter weekend. Many Easter traditions first began in Germany, and to this day, Easter is one of Germany’s most celebrated holidays. In fact, the first chocolate Easter bunny was made in Germany in the 1800s. Celebrated alongside chocolate bunnies and the resurrection is the coming of spring. Colorful decorations begin popping up in some German villages like spring flowers and painted eggs hanging from tree branches. Celebrating Easter in Germany gives you the opportunity to incorporate a few of these German traditions and add an interesting twist to your Easter holiday weekend. Here are a few ways you can celebrate Easter like a German.

DECORATE

It is traditional for Germans to decorate a tree in their yard with handpainted eggs. It is also common to cut branches from outdoor trees and bring them inside and decorate them. To prepare the eggs for hanging, insert two small holes on either side of an egg with a small needle while carefully breaking up the yokes inside. Next, gently blow out the insides through one of the holes until only the shell is left. Decorate your eggs to your liking, and with a glue stick, dab glue next to each other so you

can glue both ends of a ribbon to form a loop. Hang your eggs on your tree or branch and you’ve officially decorated like a German.

DAYS OF EASTER

Green Thursday (Gründonnerstag): Although some celebrate Green Thursday more than others, it is a tradition for Germans to eat something green on this day, such as spinach, leeks or peas. Green Thursday is a regular working day for most, and in recognition of its other meaning, the Last Supper, some Christians also attend an evening church service to have their feet washed. Good Friday (Karfreitag): Everything is quiet and Germans are off work through Easter Monday. Families share a relaxing day out like going for a long walk. They also tend to avoid meat throughout the day, so a fish and/or vegetable dinner is quite traditional. Some Christians attend Mass in remembrance of Jesus dying on the cross. During Mass a candle is lit then kept until Easter morning so it can be lit again at the breakfast table. Good Friday is overall a day to relax and prepare for Easter morning.

Saturday: Easter markets are a great way to spend Easter Saturday, while some families prefer a quieter day that includes exchanging decorated eggs or making Easter "nests" (baskets) for the children. Family, friends and the Easter bunny peri-

odically drop gifts in the nests until Easter Monday. Some smaller, more religious German towns will attend a Saturday night service and then a bonfire. A tractor and wagon drive through the villages gathering tree branches people have left out in front of their houses. The branches are brought to one pile for a bonfire and residents gather to acknowledge not only the rising of Christ, but the end of winter and coming of spring. To read about the Nuremberg Easter Market, which continues this weekend and through Monday, see next page. Easter Sunday (Ostern): While the sun is still down, some celebrate the Easter rising by re-lighting their Good Friday candle, followed by a breakfast with sausage, eggs

and Easter (Ostern) bread. The day is spent going to Easter morning church service, going on Easter egg hunts and playing games. Every now and then children will peak to see what goodies have appeared in their nest from family and friends. A traditional Easter dinner is lamb, potatoes and vegetables followed by a traditional lamb or bunny-shaped cake (Osterlamm), which is made with flour, eggs, butter and powdered sugar (see the recipe below). Easter Monday (Ostermontag): Easter Monday is a non-working holiday and a time to relax. On this day, family and friends usually take turns visiting each other. Now, be proud that you celebrated your Easter holiday like a German!

Easter Lamb Cake (Osterlamm) INGREDIENTS • 125g butter or margarine at room temperature • 125g sugar • 1 vanilla sugar pack • 1 pinch of salt • 4 eggs • 150g flour • 1 tsp baking powder • 100g peeled, ground almond • 6 drops of bitter almond extract • 6 spoonfuls of milk

Nuremberg Easter Market open till Monday Deciding on which Easter markets to visit is tough since there are so many popping up in large and small towns throughout Germany. by Amanda Hayward Contributing writer One market to consider is the Nuremberg Easter Market, Nuremberg’s oldest market that began in 1318 in Meistersinger city. The market will be open through Monday. Each year the market is held on the main market square. This year there are about 80 unique stalls that have everything from household goods, to arts and crafts and homemade foods. In its earlier years, the market developed the name “Pot Market,” or "Häferlesmarkt," because people could get nearly everything for their daily needs. It wasn’t until 1424 that it became an “official” market. Each year the king would show the Nuremberg crown jewels to the people, and the year he chose to give them to the city as a gift was the year the market became official. Today, a replica of the crown (a part of the crown jewels) is displayed in the city’s town hall for all to see. The original 14th century crown is in Vienna, Austria. The market has about 80 stalls selling arts and crafts from near and abroad, candles, furniture, curtains and wicker, sweets and snacks of all kinds and cleaning supplies, among other things. The market also features spe-

cial Nuremberg foods, such as sausages and gingerbread, stands with cooking demonstrations, a bakery stand and a grinding shop for scissors and knives. The bakery stand features a man baking bread inside a big production tent from morning until afternoon for people to watch, taste and learn. Some people come to the market just for the fresh, traditional baked breads made without any additives or preservatives. The knife and scissor stand is quite unique as well. People can bring their own knives or scissors to this stand to have them sharpened with a professional knife grinder. One tradition that makes the Nuremberg market so special is its two-day arts and crafts market held at the town hall. It can be described as a small market inside of a bigger market. Each year artists and/or craftsmen show how their masterpieces are made step-by-step for people to observe. Afterward, visitors have the opportunity to buy the finished products. Any artist or craftsman can come in to show off their skills as long as it’s pre-approved by the city and the craft can be properly presented one step at a time. This year a craftsman is showing people how to make leather bags, which can later be purchased.

The Nuremberg Easter Market is open through Monday in front of the famous Frauenkirche. The market features more than 80 stalls selling everything from household goods, to arts and crafts, to homemade foods.

The location alone makes the Nuremberg Easter Market worth a visit; the castle scenery, old houses and town surrounding the market make it even more appealing and unique among other Easter markets. Visitors have to enter through the old castle walls just to get into the city center. Once inside, you are completely surrounded by a histor-

Mother magic

Tips to help military moms thrive by Dr. Krystal White Contributing writer “I know God won't give me anything I can't handle. I just wish he didn't trust me so much.” — Mother Teresa At the beginning, there's plenty of information on what to expect as a new mom. New parents anxious to keep their children healthy nurture their children and set up good routines. They gobble up baby books and their advice. After some time, moms become pros at handling the nitty gritty of the daily grind that raising children demands. Moms affiliated with the military — either active duty themselves or are married to a spouse who is active duty — hurdle an added layer of culture, expectations and pressures. Despite the stress, these women show extreme resilience and contentment. According to recent Army family life survey results, 68 percent of spouses would prefer their spouse to stay in the Army until retirement. Almost 60 percent say they are “satisfied” or “very satisfied” with their lifestyle. Military moms face unique challenges, however, that other moms might not experience. Take, for example, if you are a military spouse:

1. Employment difficulties. Maintaining a profession is extremely challenging for spouses, especially while overseas. Frequent relocations and a lack of positions available in ones field can create a gap in ones career. Positions that are available can't be obtained either due to ones position on priority status, or the job is not a good fit. Of course, language barriers are present as well. Many families require dual incomes to support their budget. The loss of employment is also psychological, depriv-

ing a spouse of fulfillment, self-esteem and community. This problem can then lead to marriage difficulties if a sense of resentment develops.

self advocacy on a spouse's part. If a spouse is unhealthy (mentally, physically, socially), often resources that can be helpful are not utilized.

2. Loneliness/unstable community. With multiple relocations coinciding with a family's assignment, it is easy for spouses to be isolated. Many spouses don't feel they have one friend whom they can trust. Busy work schedules often take front seat instead of regular dates, and spouses create a sense of over independence that only makes life more burdensome. Many spouses focus all their energy on their children to the detriment of their own physical and social health.

5. Unrealistic expectations. Social pressures to conform to one model for marriage, household duties and parenting are more intense in the military. Spouses often feel scrutinized and judged by their peers or the chain of command rather than supported. These hurdles do not have to trip spouses up. There are a few key ways to thrive as a military mom: • Make child care a priority. Even if your child is on a wait list, sign up for child care. If you can't get your toddler into a base preschool, look into private options. Creative solutions may be private care (au pairs overseas may be more affordable than you think). Create your own child care cooperative, swapping child care a few days each week in an organized fashion. Spouses with child care resources tend to report more feelings of satisfaction and less stress. • Use deployment resources. Locate your community service programs, and show up for deployed family events. They are so much fun. They provide an evening out, free meal and companionship. It is so nice to chat with other spouses going through similar circumstances.

3.

Lack of child care. Overseas assignments have restricted child care options. The programs are almost always full with a burdensome wait list. Many child development centers or school age programs cannot accommodate children with special needs. Spouses often spend money on finding suitable child care or simply give up. This leads to more isolation, burn out and stress.

4. Deployments and psychological single life or parenting. Research shows the more times and total length of absence a parent has from the family unit, the more negative problems they experience. Being resilient before, during and after deployment requires significant amount of

Becca Breedlove-Berry is a thriving mom and resiliency pro. "I encourage mothers to be aware of themselves and their own needs. Often we get so wrapped up in the needs of our children, jobs and husbands we forget to take care of ourselves," she said.

"The most important advice I give friends who ask me how I handle long separations and the single parenting that goes along with it is it is OK to ask for help," said Becca Beeedlove-Berry, a resilient mom and spouse who has weathered multiple deployments, full time employment and raising a child with special needs. • Use mental health resources. Stressed or just need a sounding board? Go to behavioral health, your PCM, the chaplains or a trusted friend. Something's come up and not sure what to do? CATHEDRAL IS TOURIST HOT SPOT, EASTER DESTINATION Some Christian families attend at least one special church service during the long Easter weekend, and what better way is there to celebrate the resurrection than at a historical cathedral surrounded by beaming stained glass windows, an amazing orchestra and breath-taking gothic architecture planted in the center of one of Germany’s oldest cities, Cologne? The "Kölner Dom," or Cologne Cathedral, is the largest gothic cathedral in Northern Europe. The construction of the cathedral began in 1248 and wasn’t completed until the 19th century, so needless to say, the church didn’t pop up to its full potential overnight. After its completion in 1880, it was the tallest building in the world for four years until the Washington Monument was built, making it the second tallest. Subsequently, Cologne can be described as “the cathedral city.” The cathedral has been a tourist attraction since the Middle Ages and can house up to 20,000 people at a time. Each year, more than 6 million people come to Cologne to see the

church, which makes it one of the most visited attractions in Germany. Locals love their church, and some make it a point to appreciate the cathedral just as much as tourists do. “For locals, the cathedral is one of the most important things in Cologne,” said Christopher Flaskam, a volunteer in the secretary’s office at the cathedral. “Special Catholic events, such as Easter, Christmas, etc., are a local highlight of the city. You can pretty much say that they are proud of their cathedral.” Arriving at Cologne’s main train station, Köln Hauptbahnhof, the first thing you will see when you step into the city center is the cathedral's giant facade and two tall towers designed as if they were reaching toward the sky (or the heavens) — a typical gothic style feature. It’s truly an unbelievable experience that you have to see for yourself. Entering into the cathedral you immediately notice the 140-foot-high baldachin style arches, and in the back of the altar is the relic of the three holy Magi, “Dreikönigenschrein,” one of the church's most popular features. If you visit the cathedral at the right moment of the day, you will notice the sun beaming in through the newly

designed stained glass windows. To get a beautiful lighting in the altar room, the best time to visit the cathedral is around noon or in the afternoon, Flaskam said, “when the sun shines through the cathedral’s newest window(s).” Another popular feature is the cathedral's almost 330-foot-high south tower where visitors can walk up 533 steps to the top of the dome to see a phenomenal view of the city

and the river. It’s a challenging and time consuming climb up, but it’s worth every step. On the way you will pass St. Peter’s Bell, the largest freehanging bell in the world weighing 24 tons. If you get to the cathedral early enough, around 10 a.m., or come later in the evening, it’s less crowded and you will more than likely have no problem getting a seat to enjoy a traditional Mass. The orchestra plays music in compliance with the Mass, which varies on a weekly basis. Once a month there are special symphonic concerts, “Musik am Dreikönigenschrein,” held in the dome. During Easter Mass all of the seats are usually full and people have to stand on the sides of the church. The Mass is televised, so people can also enjoy it from home. After experiencing a church service, take advantage of one of the tours the church offers in German or English. Learning more about the cathedral's full history can give you more appreciation of what the church is all about. For more information about guided tours and Masses, visit the cathedral's website at www.koelner-dom.de.

Why loneliness matters by Dr. Krystal White Contributing writer Loneliness hurts. The more lonely feelings a person reports, the less quality sleep they get, the more at risk they are at being diagnosed with depression, anxiety or cardiovascular disease, and the more difficult concentration and learning becomes. Loneliness is an uncomfortable state of being. It starts with a sad feeling and leads to thoughts of isolation, unworthiness and even failure. It often makes us feel hopeless and irritated. It is highly subjective, meaning one person can be more prone to feeling lonely than another who experiences the same situation. Loneliness can be felt by people of all ages. Here are some of the reasons and factors that may increase loneliness: • ALIENATION from family: having many conflicts or feeling unsupported or not close with immediate family members (your parents, siblings, spouse, children) • BEREAVEMENT: death of loved ones • BULLYING: being socially rejected or teased • MEDIA: More time on social media often leads to feelings of loneliness. Also, media use is stimulating. Too much and we may build less of a tolerance for solitary activities than in the past. We unrealistically compare ourselves to others (too many inputs, lack of tolerance for solitary reflection, activities, unrealistic social comparison) • CHANGE OF LIFE: Retirement, losing a spouse/child/parent, relocating, having a child/caring for young children • STRESS: If we are too busying working, we may have less time and energy for creating friendships and connections. If we are consumed by worries about our finances, our health or possible future problems, we may feel more lonely. • RELATIONSHIP PROBLEMS: We can also feel lonely if we have been arguing or having a lot of conflict in our most important relationships (best friend, romantic partner, children, parents). Loneliness can just sneak up on us. For

Page 7

example, all developing children will get lonely from time to time. Parents and children should talk about how normal it is to feel lonely. No matter what a person looks like on the outside (e.g., number of friends, or siblings, or popularity), he or she can likely feel as if there’s no one to play with, or there's no one who understands him or her. Sometimes just playing in a room by yourself or having a friend go away on a summer or spring break vacation can make a child feel lonely. Teenagers are more prone to feeling lonely than younger children. Despite the fact that teens are the most connected age group (e.g., more than 70 percent of teens report texting everyday), they often perceive themselves to be on the “outside” more than others who are younger or older than them. Intense social pressure to “fit in” and being overly sensitive to any sign of rejection, teens are at risk for feeling lonely and therefore “worthless.” Teens who are often lonely are more at risk for depression than teens who are not. Lonely teens can come across as insensitive or lack insight. Lonely teenagers may not accurately read or respond to emotional and social cues and can often be perceived as being rude, overly sarcastic or fake. Being lonely can demotivate a teen; they often act less productive when they feel disconnected. Making friends isn't as easy as we assume it is. Many adults lack peers with whom they feel like they connect. It takes vulnerability, time and energy, three things that run low in our stressed out adult routines, to initiate quality time with others. In addition, we discover that people we first assume will make good friends often aren't a good fit. It's easy to relocate or start to PCS and not want to put forth the energy to maintain peer relationships. Yet, without these connections, our health is compromised. Peer relationships decrease marital conflicts, increase our ability to laugh and be optimistic, and assist us in times of trouble. See LONELINESS, Page 15

passions. Join or create your own meet up clubs or a church. The best cure for loneliness is to stay busy doing things you enjoy. "It may sound corny, but spouses clubs and unit spouses groups work. No one else gets you and the (unique) demands on your time and family like the other families in the same unit going through the same thing. (These local groups can be) the best mutual support network there is," said Vickie Ireland, who has been a key military spouse for more than 20 years. Plus, these groups provide word of mouth resources for your local area (best places for child care, hairdressers and home goods). • Ask about the local resiliency/wellness program. Most bases have one. Many have relaxing atmospheres (massage chairs!) and programs. For example, wellness centers have nutrition classes, metabolic tests and stress reduction training. Day trips, seminars and conferences are also commonly offered. • Get engaged. Many spouses find that volunteering, leading an exercise class or getting involved in a local cause can create a sense of home away from home. There's nothing like civic engagement to provide a sense of purpose and skill development. Look beyond the base to host nation and economy opportunities to become engaged. In Germany, newcomers are expected to go and greet their neighbors. Go and introduce yourself, or hold an open house. • Use your "Freak Out Friend" when needed. Spouses need a go to a person other than their significant other to vent, bounce ideas off of and assist with daily living dramas. Basically, this is the "safe place" person who you trust will be strong when you feel weak. This is one of the most important asset for anyone to have. Your community, your website.

Icy delights in Germany by Nicole Karsch-Meibom Contributing writer

H

ow do you know you’re getting close to summer? Your favorite ice parlor opens its doors again! Is there a nicer way to treat yourself than to sit outside and enjoy the taste of gelato? The first written reports on ice cream date back to the times of Alexander the Great when glacier ice was combined with nectar or honey. The Roman emperor Nero Claudius Caesar (A.D. 54-86) sent runners into the mountains for snow to be flavored with fruits and juices. Over a thousand years later, Marco Polo brought a recipe from China for a type of frozen delight that found its way to the tables of the European royalties. In the middle of the 17th century, ice cream was made available to the general public. A Sicilian founded one of the first coffeehouses in Paris and introduced the Italian ice cream “gelato” to his guests, among which were the greatest thinkers of Europe at the time, from Benjamin Franklin to Victor Hugo. One of his regular

customers, Voltaire, even mentioned the new delight: "Ice cream is so exquisite. What a pity it isn’t illegal.” Today you can find hundreds of flavors, some more than extravagant like Black Mamba (black ice cream with cherry and popping candy), and every proper ice cream parlor will pride itself with its own new creation. However, despite fashion products like Sallow Thorn-Orange and Creme Brulee, the most popular flavors in Germany are plain vanilla and chocolate. In 2012, it was recorded that every German consumed 7.7 liters of ice cream, but in terms of who eats the most ice cream, the United States tops the list with 17 liters per head, outpacing Australia (10.3 liters), Norway (10.2 liters) and Sweden (8 liters). But don't get ice cream and gelato confused. They are not the same. Real handmade gelato contains much less fat and air and is served at a higher temperature, which makes it a lot more creamy and enables more aromas to reach the taste buds of the tongue. In short — it tastes more intensive. Proper gelato is pro-

duced fresh on a daily base to be sold immediately. Industrially manufactured ice cream on the other hand is produced for long time storage, in greater quantities and with much fewer flavors. This difference of production makes it important to watch out for hygiene. When choosing your parlor, always look behind the counter. If the scoop sits in a muddy brew and doesn’t get rinsed after each helping, leave right away. It is not healthy. Also, a simple sign saying “homemade” is not legally binding. The product may still have been purchased from an ice cream factory. So ask the vendor if what you get is truly gelato. Look for creaminess, choice and genuine taste. But the most convincing sign of good gelato is the waiting line outside! Indeed there is a great discussion going on about whether one’s own self-made treat is better than the one from an ice cream parlor. While there are kitchen tools for making creative and individual ice cream at home, it lacks the comfort aspect of sitting in the sun and having it served by a waiter. It's a matter of taste!

Stuttgart Spring Festival by Nicole Karsch-Meibom Contributing writer Some agree there's nothing bigger, nothing better and nothing more fun than the Stuttgart Spring Festival. This year, the 76th annual event will be held Saturday to May 11 at the Cannstatter Wasen in Stuttgart. The party is gigantic. On more than 60 acres — the size of about 30 football fields — the festival grounds will be filled with joyrides, beer tents, live bands and partygoers. Some 10,000 people worked together to make this a unique experience. “We needed the energy of a town with 20,000 inhabitants and the amount of water that could fill 140,000 bath tubs,” said festival spokesman Jörg Klopfer. It is a true record breaker. The Mega King Tower is the highest transportable mega drop tower in the world with a total height of almost 330 feet, and it is on its premier tour through Europe. Be one

of the first to have your breath taken away. But that's not all there is for those adrenaline junkies out there. From “Break Dance” to “Turbo Force,” there are enough rides to make you scream. If you're in for a laugh, visit the "Lach-Freu-Haus," or laugh-fun-house, with its turning tunnels, water rides and more. The spring fest offers great, new rides for all ages, but for many, it’s the festival tents that make this place so special. The Wasenwirt party tent is always the most popular (visit www.wasenwirt.de/en/ start-en.html for details). For the latest in chart topping hits, the Wasenwirt tent is the place to go. The tent is decorated in a stylish combination of Bavarian country style and hot disco nights. For the Bavarian experience, visit the Göckelesmaier tent (visit www.goeckelesmaier. de for details), where you can dance, enjoy crispy chicken and

have a good time with friends. A traditional beer garden can be found outside the tent and is the perfect place to go on sunny afternoons. At Grandl’s Hofbräu tent (visit http://grandls-hofbraeuzelt. de/en for details), some 2,000 visitors are expected to join

and sing the traditional Wasen song: “If I think of party and fun, I can just think of our Wasen ...” Lastly, the Almhütte (visit www.diealmhuette.de/ almhuettendorf for details) is not so much a tent but several chalets where visitors can

dine on a wide selection of alpine cuisine and drink wine while enjoying live music on three stages. For all festival tents a reservation is recommended, especially if you come with a large group. Because thousands of visitors are expected to come every day, it is recommended to travel by public transport. The local S-Bahn trains S1, S2, S3, as well as R1, R2 and R8, all arrive at Bad Cannstatt, which is within walking distance of the fest. If you want to come by car, you can leave your car at parking lot Wilhelmsplatz (Wilhelmsplatz 11), Mühlgrün (Überkinger Straße 13/1), König-Karl-Passage (Badstrasse 17) or Wilhelma (Neckartalstrasse). The Stuttgart Spring Fest ends May 11 with a 15-minute fireworks display that will illuminate the skies over Stuttgart and the festival. The festival is open from noon to 11 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and 11 a.m. to midnight on weekends and public holidays at the Cannstatter Wasen (Mercedesstraße 50).

'The Master Draught' Historical festival play to take over Rothenburg ob der Tauber by Nicole Karsch-Meibom Contributing writer Anno Domini 1631 — the situation in Rothenburg ob der Tauber is dire. Sixty thousand starving soldiers are about to ransack the little town in Germany’s Franconia. The Catholic general Johann Tserclaes von Tilly sends all his forces against the walls of Protestant Rothenburg. Johann is not known for mercy, and when the town finally surrenders, everybody expects their soon and cruel death. In the very last moment, Johann offers the town a deal: Should one of the town councilors be capable of emptying a goblet with 3/4 liter of wine in one go, he would spare the town. Brave Mayor Georg Nusch takes up the challenge and saves Rothenburg and its inhabitants in the very last minute. This wonderful legend has been celebrated since 1881 with a gigantic open air and indoor play called “Der Meistertrunk.” or the The Master Draught. The entire city is turned into a historical site with markets, military camps and an army with authentic costumes and weaponry. More than 900 actors participate in this unique public play, and merchants and inhabitants of Rothenburg take pride in presenting a most authentic environment. During the Whitsun holidays from June 6 to 8, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, one of the most memorable and best kept medieval towns in Germany, hosts the replay of the legend. On June 6, the historic crafts market will open at the Grüner Markt. The

historic play will then take place at 8 p.m. in the town hall. The following Saturday will have the motto “Besieged Town,” and troops and vigilantes will meet all over downtown starting at noon. Children can learn how people lived in the year 1631 on Herrngasse, whereas parents can get ready for the continuation of the play in the town hall at 3 and 5:30 p.m. Later that evening, around 8 p.m., all actors will march to the festival place with music and entertainment. White Sunday, June 8, will see the memorable rescue operation. Plundering soldiers will be all over town until the play comes to its final stage at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. In the afternoon at 3 p.m., the historic army will march through Rothenburg, and the party will continue until late that evening. On June 9, troops will be in the market place starting at 10 a.m. At 1 p.m., a special program will be shown for children and families at the fest meadow, and at 7 p.m., Johann will announce his departure. Tickets for the indoor plays can be booked online and range from €6 to €14. There are reduced prices for minors in second and third category seating. For tickets, visit www. meistertrunk.de and click on “order online.” The local tourist information at www.tourismus.rothenburg.de offers online booking for accommodation and maps. For a webcam view of the city, visit www.tourismus.rothenburg. de/index.php?id=481.

KAISERSLAUTERN ROD & GUN CLUB

by Nicole Karsch-Meibom, contributing writer Courtesy photo

Was hunting a hobby of yours back in the states? Have you been wondering how to get back into it during your time in Germany? Well, just because you live in Germany doesn't mean the option isn't open to you. However, though hunting in Germany is a great experience, getting the license necessary to do so is usually not an easy task. Getting a license requires long and expensive classes, difficult exams, shooting tests, hunting permits and a lot of paperwork — all in German. It's quite an ordeal, but this is where the Kaiserslautern Rod & Gun Club comes into play. “We offer two hunting courses a year through the Kaiserslautern Rod & Gun Club. The course is 10 weeks long and is usually offered January through March and sometime in the fall, usually October to December,” said manager Christopher E. Hodges. “Students will be taught the German theories on hunting, and they have to pass a written and verbal exam." Also, students will visit a local hunting area, or “Revier,” and learn practical applications, such as

how to disembowel the different game found in Europe. As they will be required to qualify in three different shooting disciplines (rifle, pistol and shotgun), all students have to do firearms training. While in the course, students utilize rental weapons from the Kaiserslautern Rod & Gun Club. After completion of the class, participants will be able to purchase weapons for hunting. Afterward, the newly qualified hunter has a few options for hunting in Germany. First, it is possible to rent a seat from the German forestry department. The second option is to be invited to join a local hunting area because, in Germany, each owner has their own stipulations on usage. So hunting rights belong to the landowner. Third, you can book a hunt through the Hunting, Fishing, Sport Shooting program office. In all cases, the Rod & Gun Club will be happy to help. However, before applying, check if you are eligible to get your hunting license in Germany through the Rod & Gun Club. "This applies only to members of U.S. and

Canadian forces who have SOFA status," Hodges said. "If a dependent is a local national of a European country, then they have to go through the certification from their respective country.” To take part, applicants must be 18 years of age or older at the time of taking the final exam of the hunting course. Once you sign up you will be given an FBI background check form, and it must be completed prior to the start of the training. From learning new, exciting skills, to collecting new found knowledge on nature to making new friends on or off post, the hunting course is broadening the horizon, and there is more to it. “All of this information is just a snapshot of the total picture," Hodges said. "If you have questions about hunting, fishing and sport shooting in Germany, please come into the Kaiserslautern Rod & Gun Club.” The club is located on Vogelweh, Bldg. 422. For more information, call 489-7274 or 0631-536-7274). More information can also be found online at www.86fss.com/index.php/sports-and-recreation/ outdoor-recreation/rod-a-gun-club.

Europe's farmers markets worth a visit A stroll through a farmers market can sensationalize a spring Saturday. Truly a traveling adventure, these places unite locals and tourists in their search for colorful produce, aromatic spices, artisan products and a sense of community. The form and experience of farmers markets has shifted across urban development. Prior to the Industrial Age, producers sold their items directly to the market. Increased access to trading centers and ports created the notion of a single retailer offering consumers one place to find their desired goods, making access less demanding. As goods became more affordable, products sourced from longer distances could more easily get into a consumer's hands. In recent years, exponential growth has been observed in local farmers markets in the United States. In 1994, 1,755 known markets existed. In 2013, 8,144 were counted, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. A 3.6 percent increase was noted from 2012 to 2013. Similarly, popular markets can be found in many towns and urban areas through Europe. Vendors, communities and consumers reap the benefits of farmers markets. Commerce flows back into the local community, farmers have more profit with less overhead costs, consumers obtain fresh, organic food at lower prices, and people have a safe place to socialize in nature. Think farmers markets are more expensive? In 2010, a report found that, on average, food items were 40 percent less expensive when shopping at a farmers market. Farmers markets can be enjoyed locally. They are a gem to experience while traveling. So, what are you doing this Saturday? Enjoy the process of searching for

seasonal fare at any tasty farmers market where you live or plan to travel. Tips for market shoppers: • Look, but don't touch. In most markets outside the states, you tell (or point if you don't speak a common language) the cashier what you'd like and he or she will pick up the item for you. It is considered intrusive for you to touch items, particularly produce. • Bring your own bags. It is not only considered environmentally friendly, but often the seller won't have a bag for your purchases. • Heighten your situational awareness. At some markets it is not polite to take large cameras into the market and snap pictures of the goods. Be aware of the cultural tone, and double check with the nonverbal impression your camera, volume of voice or large backpack has on those around you. Since most locals can pinpoint a newcomer as a tourist, it is likely thieves will as well. Markets are the primary place for small time pickpockets to earn their living. • Intentionally bargain. Decide if you want something and how much you have or want to spend on it. I have wasted a lot of mental energy trying to figure out if I was being taken advantage of. I have learned to focus on my own personal connection or desire for the item when guiding my price point. Bargaining is like buying art; if you really like and can afford the item, focus on that rather than getting the price point upper hand. • Live in the moment. Market finds are meant to be savored in the present. Find one item to eat at the market itself. Most produce should be eaten and enjoyed within three days.

It's a SNAP! Healthy recipes kids can make Courtesy photo

by Dr. Krystal White Contributing writer Like so many other areas of parenthood (think after school appointments, summer break, television, school projects), feeding children is a love/ hate relationship. We delight in watching our children scarf down a homemade meal, or enjoy their first bites of a new food. We dread possible looks of disgust, or planning night after night of nutritional fare. Learning to cook our own food and create nour-

ishment that feeds our bodies and our emotions is a fundamental life skill. We make plans to teach our children how to ride their own bikes and how to handle their own bank accounts, but often fail to show them the ropes in the kitchen. All children, from elementary school students to high school students, should be taught a basic repertoire of three healthy meals. Why? First, children like to be in charge. Cooking gives them a way to contribute and have more choice. Children are more likely to eat food they cook themselves.

Second, it is a great way to spend time together. Parents and children who cook together also are more likely to sit down at the table and eat together. Third, cooking is a skill that requires math, reading and direction following. Cooking also helps young children practice math skills when they're measuring and estimating portions, and it builds creativity and self reliance in children of all ages. Finally, if your children learn how to cook, once in a while you get a night off. Instant stress reducer!

Now try out some of these child friendly recipes! ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS Grades K-3 Children these ages can make recipes without using any stoves or ovens. You probably will have to have some of the ingredients pre-prepared. Strawberry Nutella yogurt, serves 8 Easy to do with minimal adult help. Have the children whip up a big batch of this recipe and divide into eight single serving containers for a great easy snack or part of breakfast. Instructions: Mix a large, 16 ounce tub of vanilla or plain Greek yogurt in with a 16 ounce package of thawed frozen strawberries. Fold in 1/3 cup of Nutella and mix, mix, mix. Children can also spread this on frozen waffles or layer it in tortillas with sliced bananas. Another option is to put fun mixings into yogurt: chocolate chips, graham crackers, fresh fruit, slivered almonds and granola. Grades 4-6 Children these ages can use the microwave and, if mature, the oven. You probably still need to supervise any chopping or stove top use. Microwaved Mac 'n' Cheese, serves 4 Who doesn't love Mac 'n' Cheese? This is a healthy version of the child treat, especially when made with whole ingredients. Tip: have a box of pasta shells precooked and stored in two containers in the fridge to have on hand for kid creations. This makes cooking easy and uses healthy portion sizes. Instructions: Get a large glass bowl. Pour the cold, cooked pasta

LONELINESS, from Page 7

Here are some suggestions to fight loneliness: For children: The more practice children get at "alone" time, the less likely they may feel the "bad" type of lonely. Help your children practice by scheduling alone time for play in his/her room (without a TV/screen/computer) at least 30 to 60 minutes a week.

For Teens: Watch social media use. Lonely people often spend more time on social media than others. Don't let an online social life fool you or your teen: this is no replacement for good old-fashioned face-to-face conversations and friendships, despite what teens say. If a teen is retreating more and more into an online social world, this may be a sign of social problems. Ask your teen, “How can you spend more time with friends in the real world?” Limit social

media and force your teen to deal with people faceto-face. For Adults: Start a habit of hosting get togethers. Pick a TV show to watch together, plan a monthly brunch with a group of pals, or a monthly activity (bike rides, motorcycle outing, USO trip). These social "dates" are the best and easiest ways to develop authentic friendships.

The Eagle’s Nest was once a diplomatic teahouse given to Adolf Hitler in 1939 as a gift for his 50th birthday. It was intended to be used as a quiet retreat for Hitler during World War II, but in reality, he rarely ever visited it because of his fear of heights and claustrophobia. Being at the teahouse actually made Hitler feel trapped at the top of Germany’s high road. In fact, Hitler only visited the Eagle's Nest a total of 14 times. Its beautiful location and other historical sights surrounding it is what now makes it one of the most popular attractions in Germany. Spring into garden season There is no denying it. Spring is on its way! by Nicole Karsch-Meibom Contributing writer It’s time to get your garden ready for the best season of the year. To revamp your garden, make a plan of what can be achieved realistically this summer. Get informed about how to improve the quality of your lawn, which seeds or fertilizers to use and how to treat your plants. Collect as many ideas as possible, and consider carefully which plans are suitable for your own garden. Design your future garden online beforehand using sites such as Garden Planner at http://smallblueprinter. c o m / g a r d e n / p l a n n e r. html or the Simple Guide To Garden Planning by the Royal Horticultural Society at www.rhs.org. uk/Gardening/Gardendesign. Depending on the size of your landscape, optical tricks can make your property look bigger. By using the right color and texture of the plants, you can create an impression of distance. That is a technique the Japanese have perfected — just think of bonsai miniaturized plants to alter the perspective. Because springtime is quickly approaching, now is the time to look thoroughly at your greenery. Which shrub has made it through the winter and which has turned unsightly? Before uprooting though, canvass all information available about that plant. Some species appear to be gone but aren’t at all, like the withered looking branches of a grape-vine. Some plants, such as lavender or butterfly bushes, just need to be cut back in order to bloom again properly. Ornamental grasses should be reduced to a few inches above the ground as soon as possible, whereas flowers like Iris or Epimedium call for trimming of the foliage.

Cutting too much or at the wrong time can cause great damage, so take the time to read and study properly beforehand. To save time and money, check out the gardening basics online at www. bbc.co.uk/gardening/basics/techniques. As for the queen of flowers, there is a whole science to it. In 2006, Britain voted the rose to be the most favorite flower in England. So, in order to take good care of your roses, check out the expert recommendations of British horticulturists like Garden Roses at www.garden-roses. co.uk/how-grow-roses or The Royal National Rose Society at www. rnrs.org.uk. Spring is the time for supporting new growth and working on the soil. So, covering all your flower beds with bark mulch is the best thing to do right now. It maintains the humidity, keeps the weeds low and feeds the soil after the winter. The cover should be at least 10 centimeters thick. Mulch can be purchased in every local garden center and starts at about €7 to €9 for Courtesy photos 60 liters. Calculate 50 to 100 liters of mulch for one square meter. To prepare the soil, it has to be broken up properly. Dig it up to aerate and loosen the ground. Adding fertilizers or compost depends on the needs of the plants. Lastly, don’t forget to think about your garden furniture. If the wood has turned gray, it will need thorough grinding before re-painting or oiling. However, huge furniture stores often offer garden equipment at low prices, so this might even be cheaper than refurbishing the old stuff. And after putting all that effort into your plants, don’t you deserve a new lounge chair to enjoy your green oasis? Have a great summer!

so nice it was named twice!

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton, on a visit to the spa town of Baden-Baden in Germany, once remarked, “Baden-Baden is so nice you have to name it twice.” Though a small city — just a mere 50,000 inhabitants — this spa town has enchanted millions of visitors over the past centuries. The nature of the town has been described as such: “You’re sitting on a bench in a beautiful, green park with a view of beautiful buildings. If your eyes move upward, you can see more beautiful buildings, and eventually, you will catch sight of the beautiful Black Forrest in the distance.” There is hardly a better description, as you will come to find out. The initial secret of BadenBaden lies in its hot thermal springs. Even the Romans in their time discovered the joys of sitting in a hot bath. Through the ages, but especially in the 19th century, people of nobility and wealth came to Baden-Baden to meet for entertainment and relaxation. As a result, the town has flourished and is full of architectural delights from the Belle Epoch period. Today, not only the affluent come to Baden-Baden to spend their

money at the elegant casino, but thousands of visitors are drawn to the many attractions. The important German author and travel writer Alfons Paquet (1881-1944), who visited many parts of the world, once said, “Let me tell you that Hollywood is the only place on Earth which somewhat reminds me of Baden-Baden.” What adds to the enchantment of Baden-Baden is its geographic location, as it is a perfect starting point for excursions and tours for those seeking a unique experience with nature. BadenBaden has become the gateway to the newly created Black Forrest National Park – the first and only one of its kind in the state of BadenWürttemberg. Reaching the stunning natural surroundings only takes a matter of minutes by car via the world-famous Black Forrest Scenic Route (Schwarzwaldhochstrasse), which starts in Baden-Baden, and boasts wonderful views across the Rhine valley to the Vosges mountain range. At the same time, southwest of the town you can find the Rebland, the home of Baden-Baden’s vineyards, synonymous for fine wine and culinary delights — another

thing the Romans brought to the region. They started to cultivate vines on the sheltered slopes and when they left, the local clergy took over and have kept the tradition until this day. It is hardly surprising that the town has also become one of the most famous health resorts in Germany. Healing springs, qualified clinics, abundant leisure and recreational facilities have turned this into the top road to recovery.

Likewise, the range of spa, beauty and wellness offers for those just in search of relaxation is unique and has created a very special atmosphere. Those who have made the trip will never forget. “I have always had some kind of yearning for BadenBaden,” said composer Johannes Brahms (18331897). To entertain its guests properly, the municipality spares no effort to organize concerts, exhibitions and events

with artists of high renown. Likewise for the convenience of visitors, a comprehensive website in nine languages helps visitors find all they need: www.baden-baden.de. Knowing the magic of their town, the tourist office even promises: “In just 7 minutes you’ll have chosen your next holiday destination.” Find out for yourself and watch a short film about Baden-Baden online at www. baden-baden.de/static/film/ index.php?lang=en.

Majestic castles dot the banks of the Rhine River. Don’t miss exploring Burg Rheinstein.

The powerful Rhine River once supported the Roman Empire. Today, its superb nature, wine and history are within easy reach; it’s just an hour’s drive from the KMC. In the 12th century, the impressive monastery Kloster Eberbach was founded, ushering in a booming wine industry. Hildegard of Bingen (Bingen is a must see town located right in the middle of the Rhine) is widely known as one of the greatest thinkers of the Middle Ages. At the beginning of the 19th century the Rhine River hosted numerous famous gatherings of leaders in romantic literature, poetry and art. The Rhine may be one of the most crucial rivers of European history, connecting ideas, commerce and development through the ages. It continues to be a quintessential stop for locals and tourists alike. Black slate vineyards cutting through jagged hills, trunks of historic castles and cute villages delight the sight. The Rhine is immense. At 766 miles long, it is the longest river in Germany. With so many options to explore, here are five tried and true Rhine River recommendations, and visiting guests will be pleased should you decide to escort them there.

The vineyards around Rüdesheim

The perfect sightseeing day on the Rhine must include a visit to the Niederwalddenkmal.

TAKE A DAY TRIP TO RÜDESHEIM. Even the drive to and from Rüdesheim cloaks you in romantic sensation. A winding, sparkling river zigzags the road, and one feels instantly amorous. Sitting at the Rhine gorge, right at the start of the UNESCO world heritage site, Rüdesheim is memory being born. Don’t miss a visit to the Niederwalddenkmal. Standing 125 feet tall, the Niederwald monument was completed in 1883 to commemorate the foundation of the German empire. It’s a spectacular sight, and it’s location offers some of the most spectacular views of the Rhine River below. In the spring or summer, bring along a picnic lunch then take an easy stroll down through the vineyards.

WITHIN A FEW KILOMETERS OF RÜDESHEIM, famous vinters combine their passions with tradition when it comes to making wine. The Rhine River imparts the wines with subtle minerals from the slate in the river, giving it a crisp, clear finish. Many German wines are called “Rhine wines” because of how delicious they are. Some recommended vintners include Wegeler (for superior quality) and Weingut Adolf Störzel (for large groups).

Burg Rheinstein

BESIDES ITS MANY SIGHTS AND STUNNING VIEWS, THE RHINE RIVER ALSO OFFERS SOME OF GERMANY’S BEST FESTIVALS! ASSMANNSHAUSEN IN RED: Assmannshausen is another picturesque city along the Rhine River near the cities of Rüdesheim and Bingen. While Rhine wines are notable for being white wines, the wine being produced in Assmannshausen is red. Every year, this city holds a one-day red wine festival where the streets are decorated in red lights and red fireworks light up the night. This year’s festival takes place May 24. RHINE IN FLAMES: Every year from May to September, the most scenic stretch of the Rhine River is engulfed in glowing lights and beautiful fireworks. Wine festivals and musical acts can usually be found along the banks of the river throughout the day, but as nighttime approaches, the flotilla of boats start accumulating on the river waiting for the main act. On July 5, Rhine in Flames will be coming to the portion of the Rhine River near Rüdesheim and Bingen. BINGEN SWINGS: Starting June 27, the City of Bingen holds an international jazz festival called Bingen Swings. All kinds of jazz music will be played on six different open air stages in this beautiful city, found on the crossroads of the Rhine and Nahe rivers.

On a clear day, the Rhine river enchants all visitors.

EXPLORE BURG RHEINSTEIN. Castle Rheinstein is of the most intact castles on the Rhine, and this sight has an excellent museum, a delectable cafe, sweeping views and impressive flora and fauna. Visit in the morning, and then move onto a river cruise in the afternoon. For more information about the castle and guided tours, visit www.burg-rheinstein.de/en/index. php.

A RIVER CRUISE IS A CAN’T MISS EVENT. From Mainz to Koblenz, the 36 stretch of “Romantic Rhine” will leave you refreshed from the river air and awed by breathtaking sights. From early April through October, boats run daily in both directions from Mainz to Koblenz. Once on board, you can enjoy narration or just sit back with a bottle of wine and a picnic as you cruise along the river. Viewing the famous Lorelei rock is a pilgrimage all those living in the KMC shouldn’t miss. Legend tells how a lovely looking and sounding siren lured sailors to their deaths on the rock.

WALK THE RHEINSTEIG. For nature lovers and volksmarch enthusiasts, walk a section or the entire 320 kilometer path from Wiesbaden to Bonn. Impressive scenery, challenging terrain and easy to navigate, this hiking trail is considered one of the most beautiful in Europe. This path is suitable for experienced hikers and also for those seeking shorter walks. The trail meanders through quiet woods and Rheingau vineyards and passes by numerous castles and fortifications in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. For more information, visit www.rheinsteig.de/en/der-rheinsteig/home.

Now in his 20s, Oculus Tim is newly released from protective custody and only wants to move on with his life, but Kaylie, still haunted by that fateful night, is convinced her parents’ deaths were caused by something else altogether: a malevolent supernatural force unleashed through the Lasser Glass, an antique mirror in their childhood home. Determined to prove Tim’s innocence, Kaylie tracks down the mirror, only to learn similar deaths have befallen previous owners

over the past century. Starring Karen Gillan and Katee Sackhoff. Need for Speed (PG13) — Tobey Marshall is a blue-collar mechanic who races muscle cars on the side in an unsanctioned street-racing circuit. Struggling to keep his family-owned garage afloat, he reluctantly partners with the wealthy and arrogant ex-NASCAR driver Dino Brewster. But just as a major sale to car broker Julia Bonet looks like it will save Tobey’s shop, a disastrous race allows Dino to frame Tobey for a crime he didn’t commit, sending Tobey to prison while Dino expands his business out west. Starring Aaron Paul and Dominic Cooper.
