Maastricht: A city of history, mystery

by MilitaryinGermany.com

Maastricht is special. It’s the oldest city in the Netherlands (settled around 50 BC), yet in many ways feels like the newest. Maastricht is vibrant, historic, creative, international, and easier to navigate than Amsterdam or Rotterdam. The city has brilliant restaurants, bars, museums, shops, and even a rubber ducky store. Even better: It’s just across the German border!

for real word operations.

“There can be a tendency for people to operate in their own bubble,” said Tech. Sgt. Erik Silva, 435th Contingency Response Support

Squadron air advisor instructor. “But when we facilitate these familiarization events, it opens dialogue

The program incorporated an F16 from the Portuguese air force, who were locally performing real world missions. Collaborating with the flying mission allowed the Air Advisors to blend both classroom instruction with hands on equipment handling during the familiarization event.

Silva evaluated Staff Sgt. Rickey Cline, 435th CRSS air advisor, as he coordinated the planning and execution of the program. Additionally, the air advisors sourced the assistance of Tech. Sgt. 519th Hospital Center Change of Command Ceremony

Col. Avery J. Carney assumed command of the 519th Hospital Center from Col. Werner J. Barden during a change of command ceremony July 28 at Defender Field, Rhine Ordnance Barracks.

For two consecutive years, Barden oversaw the planning, deployment, and medical command and control of the Hospital Center as a part the U.S. Army Europe and Africa Dynamic Employment of Forces to Europe for NATO Deterrence and Enhanced Readiness exercises.

Under the leadership of Barden, the 519th Hospital Center finalized the force design update to the 519th Hospital Center Headquarters and converted the Combat Support Hospital to the Field Hospital structure.

In addition to fixed operational requirements, Barden simultaneously led the 519th response during several shortnotice and nonotice missions including U.S. Army Southern European Task Force Africa NATO Rapid Response Force missions and Operation Allies Welcome.

Col. Anthony M. King, 30th Medical Brigade commander, presided over the ceremony.

King commented that Barden was the “driving force” behind a number of successful missions and training opportunities across the theater and remarked that 519th

Hospital Center is the “Army standard for Expeditionary Healthcare.”

When welcoming Carney, King referenced MLB Hall of Fame pitcher, Satchel Paige’s pitching philosophy, “throw strikes, home plate don’t move.”

King advised Carney to “stay focused on home plate” even

though, unlike the game of baseball, in military command the “home plate moves all the time.”

Carney leads the only forward stationed Hospital Center with the responsibility for providing expeditionary hospitalization, resuscitative and surgical capability, and meeting the increased health readi

ness requirements of U.S. European Command, USAREURAF, and U.S. Africa Command.

War College and the Command and General Staff College.

Carney commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army Medical Service Corps in 2002 and was branch transferred to the Army Medical Specialist Corps following completion of the Army Medical Department Officer Basic Course.

His initial assignments were with Womack Army Medical Center at Fort Liberty, N.C.; 528th Combat Stress Control in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom; and commander, 601st Medical Company (Area Support) in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Carney’s earlier assignments include: Battalion Physician Assistant, 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment; Brigade Physician Assistant, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division; Commander, 98th Combat Stress Control; Division Physician Assistant, 4th Infantry Division; Chief, Department of Medical Readiness, Evans Army Community Hospital; Division Surgeon, 4th Infantry Division; Commander, United States Army Health Clinic Grafenwoehr; and Director for the Fielded Force Integration Directorate at the Medical Center of Excellence, Joint Base San Antonio, Texas.

STATE OF THE ART: Thüringen and Sachsen-Anhalt

State of the Art is a series introducing Germany as a whole, but also highlighting an individual state or “Bundesland” every month.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Germany reunited in 1990. The Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) included 11 states and Berlin, in its geographically isolated location. The German Democratic Republic (East Germany) was comprised of the five states of Thüringen, SachsenAnhalt, Brandenburg, MecklenburgVorpommern and Sachsen. They are sometimes still referred to as the “new states” after over 30 years of reunification.

This month our journey will lead us to Thüringen and SachsenAnhalt for a number of discoveries.

While West Germany was a free democratic country with an open market and experienced the “Wirtschaftswunder” (economic wonder) in the 1950’s, the states in the German Democratic Republic lived through an era of a planned economy, little to no technological development and tightly regulated travel behind the “Iron Curtain” in the postwar era. After the reunification, the German government initiated a number of largescale projects to improve the infrastructure, such as new or upgraded roads, refurbishing of buildings in rubble and a renaissance of historical structures.

Bordering Niedersachsen, Hessen and Bayern, Thüringen officially named “Freistaat Thüringen” (Free State of Thuringia) is one of Germany’s smaller German states with an area of 16,000 squares kilometers and 2.1 million inhabitants. The capital is Erfurt with its Landtag (State Parliament) and Bodo Ramelow of the “Linke” (Left Party) is Minister President who has been in office since 2019.

Protestant reformation

Erfurt is also the largest city with 213,000 inhabitants and famous for its “Kramerbrücke” with medieval houses over the Gera River. Chandlers resided on the picturesque bridge during the Middle Ages where they ran their handcraft shops. Today it is a popular tourist attraction with quaint stores in semitimbered facades with a colorful flower ambience.

The city is also famed for its cathedral where construction began in the 8th century. The structure plays a significant role in Christian history as Martin Luther, the initiator of the Protestant Reformation was ordained into priesthood in 1507. He studied law and was due to be a city official, but based on a personal encounter during a thunderstorm, he vowed to become a monk instead and entered the very strict Order of the Augustinians at Severi Church next to the cathedral two years earlier.

In 1510 he was sent to Rome by his order and shocked by the moral decay in the city, he soon became a strong critic of the church and, in

particular, the common practice of the “sale of indulgences,” where one could ask forgiveness of sins with monetary generosity. On October 31, 1517, legend has it that the priest and scholar Martin Luther approached the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, and nailed a piece of paper to it containing the 95 revolutionary opinions that would begin the Protestant Reformation. He is also famous for translating the New Testament from Latin into German in 1522. Thanks to the invention of the printing press, his thoughts quickly spread and eventually led to his followers called “Lutherans” spreading his beliefs throughout Europe.

Puffy beans

For centuries Erfurt has been renowned for its rich vegetable gardens and especially for “Puffbohnen” (best translated as puff beans). The green beans are home to Mediterranean countries but grow especially well and large in the region due to its nutritious soil and mild climate. Babies born in Erfurt are given a plush bean to bring them luck and prosperity in life, while tourists can buy a souvenir as tshirt or cup.

The city has a historic “Altstadt” with Patricians and semitimbered edifices, several churches to visit, and idyllic squares and parks to enjoy an afternoon coffee or shopping tours.

In 1665 construction of the Petersberg Citadelle began, which is a bold fortress built in a starshaped form and was therefore considered unconquerable. It thrones high above

the city and invites visitors to a marvelous view over the countryside overlooking the Kommandantengarten, a large park at the end.

Barbarossa and Bach

A further place of interest in the state is the KyffhäuserMemorial in the mountain range of the same name. According to legend, Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa, who also resided in Kaiserslautern for a few years, is said to have been sleeping in the underground caves for centuries due to wake up and save the nation. The memorial is the third largest in Germany and was started in 1892 on the ruins of a former castle and depicts Barbarossa waking up along with Emperor Wilhelm I on his horse.

Johann Sebastian Bach, one of Germany’s most famous composers, was born in the town of Eisenach in 1685. A museum in his birth house with original living quarters during the Baroque era and a picturesque garden is located in the small city with over 250 artefacts. It is the largest Bach museum in the world and the adjacent new building offers floating “bubble chairs,” a musical instrument that you can walk into and interactive concerts along with Café Kontate for a break afterward.

The town also has a picturesque old section and the mighty Wartburg Castle nearby, which is of historical significance. The fortress 410 meters (1,200 feet) above the city was a place of exile for Martin Luther in 1521 after being excommunicated by the pope and outlawed by the emperor for

undermining Catholic doctrine with his 95 theses.

During the East German era, there were only two models of cars available with waiting periods of up to 15 years. The more prestigious model “Wartburg” was named after the castle. Automobile production began as early as 1898 at the works in Eisenach and in 1956 the East German motor works VEB brought the model onto the market with a 50 horsepower engine. About 1.6 million cars were built with approximately 8,400 still registered in Germany today, an absolute precious jewel for fans of historic automobiles.

Goethe and Schiller

Weimar is another historic city in the state and wellknown for its classic era with humanisticcultural movements. The Goethe and Schiller memorials in front of the National Theater are in memory of the two poets and writers who lived in the city. Goethe’s house in a Baroque style where he resided for 50 years between his travels now houses the Goethe National Museum. The Schiller Museum is next to his former residence and the Bauhaus Museum displays works of Walter Gropius, an architect who developed a simplistic building style in the early 1900’s. The city also has several castles, parks, a Rococo hall with a library with over a million books and a historic town center for shopping and leisure.

been the home of the Carl Zeiss works since 1846. The company specializes in optical lenses, from eyeglasses to camera and microscope lenses. They even exported their highquality products during the East German era. The city is characterized by typical East German architecture with its highrise concrete buildings which can still be seen from afar when driving past it. After restoration and beautification projects, the city center is now well worth a stop and has become a bustling hub for international businesses.

A fascinating place to visit is the Marienglashöhle, a cave originally opened for ore mining. At the end of the 17th century miners found crystals, also known as “Maria’s glass.” The cave is open to visitors near Friedrichroda and sometimes concerts are held there underground. The region has been famous for its glass blowing industry since the 17th century and the Thüringer Wald is a forest area great for hiking. The Erzgebirge, a low mountain range is renowned for its artistic handmade wood carvings, such as a “Weihnachtskarussel” (Christmas carousel) or candle arches, especially for holiday ornaments.

Hundertwasser and a land of windmills

SachsenAnhalt is Thüringen’s neighbor state to the north and east and slightly larger with an area of 20,000 square kilometers and 2.2 million inhabitants.

Magdeburg with 236,000 residents is the capital and the largest city in the

state that recently celebrated its 1,200year anniversary. Reiner Hasseloff of the Christian Democratic Union is the Minister President, who has been in office since 2011, and head of the State Parliament.

The city calls itself “Ottostadt” based on Otto the Great, the first “Holy Roman Emperor” who was buried in the cathedral. During the Late Middle Ages Magdeburg was a very wealthy city and member of the Hanseatic League situated along the Elbe River. SachsenAnhalt has traditionally been a land of windmills with over one hundred historic mills remaining to date. Many of them were inspired by Dutch windmills as early as the 17th century to grind wheat from the far stretching farmlands. Since the landscape is rather flat and extremely windy, the state houses over 2,900 modern turbines in giant wind parks today and can produce up to 5,295 mega watts of energy, which corresponds to five coal fired facilities.

Apart from its well restored historic city center in varying styles, there is a special section dedicated to architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser, originally from Vienna, Austria. The Green Citadel is a street designed by the artist who believed in combining the existence of architecture with the wellbeing of the residents inside the building. His colorful, often round and playfully designed buildings, which might remind visitors of a fairytale landscape for adults, can be viewed on Breiten Weg. Bridal couples can get married in the Turret Tower high above the roofs of the city.

Chemicals, films and beaches

Large conveyor structures, gray industrial facades and highly contaminated grounds are a reminder of the hub of the chemical industry in Bitterfeld during the East German era. Efforts are being made to sanitize the area and the city center has eventually evolved into a delightful place to be. A large coal mining area was cleared and intended to be turned into a lake in 2006, but due to heavy rains and a dam break of the Mulde River, the area was flooded within two days in 2002. Known as Goitzsche it now serves as a popular spot for sailing and windsurfing with leisure spots, beaches and cafés along the shore. Bitterfeld formerly was also home to the East German movie making industry, including broadcast studios and the production of equipment, such as cameras, films and projectors. The area around the city is also home to one of Germany’s largest solar parks.

SachsenAnhalt is a rather rural state with farms and dairy pastures and there are numerous smaller towns. Many of the small villages though are literally dying out and have become overly geriatric, with young people moving away. Many lost their jobs after the reunification when almost all state run businesses and production sites were closed and people sought employment in West German areas or in larger cities such as Berlin, Leipzig or Dresden.

Some works such as potassium, salt and ore mines were rescued

and the state has a number of large mounds with the valuable resources piled up along the newly constructed autobahn routes.

A green belt, gardens and a nostalgic train

A positive effect of the 40year separation was that a wide band of green developed along the 1,400kilometer route along the inner German border. A unique pristine landscape evolved into a habitat for 1,200 rare or endangered species of animals and plants. This biotope remained untouched after the border opening and is now referred to as “Grünes Band” (green belt) which can be explored on bike, wandering or hiking, or even on horseback. Another recreational area is the Harz, a low mountain range, with its highest peak being the “Brocken,” a flat mountain at 1,000 meters. A nostalgic steamdriven train built in 1899 will slowly crawl up the steep incline to take visitors up to a fascinating world of wildflowers and a great view over the landscape. The Harz is also known for a special type of cheese with a very intense flavor. SachsenAnhalt boasts a number of castles and palaces, natural parks and forests, great for hiking, biking or leisure vacations along smaller lakes or the Elbe River.

The picturesque city of Wernigerode has century long close

ties to the people of Böhmen and Sudetenland (now in the Czech Republic) and many descendants have maintained their traditions and offer delicacies from their homeland in cafés and restaurants. Czech or a dialect thereof is still widely spoken among elderly citizens.

Environmental protection

The last stop on our journey through the state will lead us to Dessau, the city that calls itself the “Bauhausstadt im Gartenreich” (Bauhaus city in the realm of gardens). Dessau is home to several elegant parks and gardens within and around the city, some with palaces to explore. The Bundesumweltamt (federal environmental authority) is located in DessauRosslau. It was opened in 2005 and built in a simplistic, but environmentally friendly style with greenery inside and out.

The eastern states in Germany have experienced a world of changes in the last 32 years after reunification. Incomes and pensions are still generally lower than in the western states, but things are picking up. International companies have set up manufacturing sites and opened new employment opportunities to its residents. Increased tourism has also become a gaining factor in the last three decades, offering a world to explore in the “new states” with lots of old history.

Face of Defense: From trombones and marathons to combat camera

Job Title: Aerial Combat Camera Journeyman

Hometown: Las Vegas

Stationed: Joint Base Charleston, S.C.

Air Force Senior Airman Jacob Cabanero has a lot of passions, including running long distances and music education, the latter of which he studied in college. But in February 2021, at the height of the pandemic, he rethought his career options and chose to join the service. Luckily for him, he became a combat camera journeyman who got to take the amazing photos you see here.

Joining up was a fitting decision. Cabanero grew up at Nellis Air Force Base,NV, where his dad was stationed for most of his own 20year Air Force career. Several of his other family members have served in the Air Force and Navy, too.

Cabanero’s current role as a combat camera photographer fits well into his active lifestyle. The soontobe 25yearold ran his first marathon in high school at age 17 and — after having helped a Marine run an ultramarathon called the Badwater 135, known as “the world’s toughest foot race” — he’s working up to running the same event someday.

So, what motivates this hardcharging Airman? He tells us below.

How did you get into photography and combat camera?

Public affairs and photojournalism were 13th out of 15 on my job list when I was waiting to ship to basic military training. I chose photojournalism as sort of a joke because I thought, “Nobody gets that job, but wouldn’t it be funny if I got it?”

Once I got the call from my recruiter that I was contracted to be a photojournalist … I figured combat camera would be a good fit for my active lifestyle, so I made it my goal to be assigned there. Typically, combat camera is a volunteeronly E5 assignment. But with a bit of luck and being at the “right

place, right time,” they had four spots open to tech school airmen. I volunteered, received a letter of recommendation from an instructor, and went through an interview board. I received the nod and traded in my original assignment to Scott Air Force Base to come to combat camera at Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina.

Describe your job’s responsibilities.

My primary responsibility is to provide senior DOD and joint leaders with imagery in support of strategic, operational and planning requirements during wartime operations, worldwide crises, contingencies, joint exercises and humanitarian operations. In essence, what I do is capture photo or video imagery in order to show what happened during that mission or operation. Wherever the Air Force goes, I stay ready to capture the story in its entirety.

What are some of your favorite subjects to photograph, and why?

My favorite thing to do on a weekend is to go to a zoo, aquarium or park and photograph the animals there. They make for great subjects and aren’t camerashy like some people. As for military imagery, I love taking portraits and creating feature stories in the different places I travel to. I love taking a break from the fastpaced, uncontrolled action that are most combat camera missions and taking the time with my subject to really tell their story.

What appeals to you most about military life?

The countless unique experiences that only the military can offer, such as temporaryduty assignments and deployments. Some days are spent in the office, some days are spent in the field, and some days are spent in the air. As a member of the 1st Combat Camera Squadron, I get the opportunity to see the numerous capabilities the Air Force and her sister branches have through the lens of my camera.

You were in the marching band growing up. In what ways did that help you prepare for the military?

My passion has always been music. Before the military, I was a music education major at the University of Las Vegas and a

marching band technician at a local high school. In college, I participated in an activity called Drum Corps International that changed my life. DCI is hard to explain, but in essence, it’s competitive marching band, and it helped me in preparation for military life and boot camp. I learned how to persevere through long, hot rehearsal days, and it taught me invaluable lessons in grit, passion and what it takes to pursue excellence.

You also mentor high school marching band students. Tell us about that.

I spend my time after work mentoring students at Wando High School because I absolutely love helping them achieve their goals in the activity that has taught me so much. What’s most fulfilling to me

Cabanero once “crewed” for a Marine during a 135-mile ultramarathon! Read about that intense experience.

I assisted Ben Blessing, a former Marine and current member of the 25th Army Band with the Idaho Army National Guard, in completing Badwater 135 in the summer of 2019. Badwater is a grueling 135-mile ultramarathon held annually in July, beginning at Badwater Basin (in Death Valley, California) and ending at the Mount Whitney, (California,) trailhead. Badwater is the lowest point in the lower 48 states, and Mount Whitney is coincidentally the highest point in the lower 48. To make things harder, Badwater Basin is also the hottest place in the lower 48, especially in July, where temperatures regularly stay above 125 degrees Fahrenheit.

How I met Ben was a funny story. I was a commissary bagger at Nellis, and I saw someone with a (Badwater 135) hat. I knew of the race because of how infamous it is. I struck up a conversation with the person, and they mentioned how I could get involved by joining a Facebook group for those looking to volunteer. Ben posted that

he’d be arriving in Las Vegas and was looking for an additional crew member who wouldn’t mind if he practiced his trombone. As luck would have it, I also play trombone. It was a perfect match.

“Crewing” at an ultramarathon means a bit of everything. It includes driving the van, pacing the runner, preparing food and electrolyte drinks and keeping the runner company during seemingly endless miles. Ben and I ended up performing the national anthem together at the start of the race. He finished in just under 40 hours.

That race was a monumental moment in my life. I couldn’t believe I watched him run 135 miles. I took that to heart and told myself, “If Ben could do it, why couldn’t I?” A lofty goal of mine is to become an ultramarathoner, run a 100-mile race and ultimately run Badwater 135. I still have a great deal of progress to make, though. My next race is the Marine Corps Marathon this fall. The road to Badwater 135 is still far away, but I have full faith in myself to get there slowly and steadily.

is seeing the students grow, whether that be in their confidence, technique, skill or — most importantly — as a person. The activity is so much more than just instruments, flags and a field.

You’re an avid runner, too. How important is it to you to stay in shape?

My physical fitness is paramount in my daily life. I participated in track and cross country in my childhood, and it’s something that has stuck around. Pushing myself to my physical limit and beyond what I think is possible is what excites me. I can always become more efficient or train my body to endure what I ask of it.

Distance running, in particular, is what I love. In the start of a training season, I can barely manage 10 miles per week, but by the end, I can comfortably run upwards of 40 miles per week. I love seeing my progression and knowing that if I keep at it, I can make it happen. In that way, running is my metaphor for life. I am a lifelong runner, and running is a part of my identity.

How would you describe your military experience to date?

My military experience has been almost picture perfect so far. It has challenged me physically and emotionally, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I honestly believe that, as a combat cameraman, I play an important role in the DOD mission, and I love it. I have a dream assignment, and I’m letting life take me on a roller coaster ride.

What goals do you dream about in the long- and short-term?

My goals include becoming a member of the Air Demonstration Squadron Thunderbirds. When I

was growing up as a dependent at Nellis, I would constantly see the Thunderbirds roaring through the sky in preparation for their show season. I remember working at the commissary and seeing the sleek Thunderbirds uniform and thinking, “If I were to join the Air Force, I want to be like them.”

My longterm goal would be to ultimately commission into the Air Force for the longterm. I would love the opportunity to lead and leave a positive impact on a greater scale. I would also love to return to college.

… I’m leaning toward finishing a degree while serving on active duty and seeking an Officer Training School slot.

What words of wisdom do you have for potential recruits?

• Take the jump into the unknown. You never know what opportunities may come your way.

• Rely on your wingmen, because without them, you cannot go far.

If you go the extra mile for some

one, they are more likely to do the same for you.

• Have fun and roll with the punches. As long as you can stay optimistic and have a smile on your face, the days won’t seem as hard.

What other hobbies or interests keep you occupied when out of uniform?

My other hobbies include hiking, traveling and spending time with my family and significant other. I enjoy traveling to new cities and trying out their local signature food.

Tell us about what your family’s support means to you. I come from a military family. We all understand the sacrifices that military members and their families have to make, so it’s comforting knowing they’ll be supporting me throughout my time in the Air Force. Making my family proud is what makes me happy. They are a big reason why I can achieve so much.

Hailing from Long Island, New York, Alexandra works as a management and program analyst for USAG RheinlandPfalz’s Plans, Analysis and Integration Office (PAIO).

Alexandra’s primary duties include managing the Installation Status Report, which assess the installation’s service quality against established Army standards. She also acts as the Interactive Customer Evaluation (ICE) manager.

Alexandra has been working for USAG RheinlandPfalz for two years and has been working for the

service for two years.

“The two things that I love most about my job are being able to interact with Army Professionals within Garrison and beyond though ISR, ICE, and various other projects and feeling like a truly valued member of the PAIO team. Having a background in the private sector with no prior military experience gives me a very different perspective than my counterparts. I always feel like my thoughts and ideas are respected and the level of communication and cohesion we have as a team allows us to knock every challenge out of the park.”

US Army Chaplain Corps Anniversary Fun Run ’23

Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Daniel Yeadon 21st Theater Sustainment Command

The 21st Theater Sustainment Command Chaplains hosted the U.S. Army Chaplain Corps Anniversary Fun Run ’23 to celebrate and honor the 248th birthday of the Chaplain Corps, July 26, on Vogelweh Military Complex.

The Chaplain Corps was founded in 1775 before the United States declared independence as the Continental Army was being formed. Compared to our country, the Chaplain Corps is older than the United States and played a part in building resiliency.

“The chaplains are where the rubber meets the road when it comes to building resiliency in our force,” said U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Ronald Regin, commanding general of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command. “Any way I can support the Chaplain Corps, I am going to lean in.”

In every war America has been involved in, the Chaplain Corps has been there helping Soldiers in many different ways.

“It’s really talking to the Soldiers, getting out into my companies, and seeing how people are doing like we are doing even here at the run,” said U.S. Army Spc. Preston White, religious affairs specialist for the 16th Special Troops Battalion. “I know it sounds like every chaplain does this, but giving out care packages and seeing people happy and making them feel important and needed to complete our mission in Team21 is why I love being a chaplain assistant.”

Today, the Army has roughly 1,300 activeduty Chaplains and 1,200 in its Reserve components who represent five major faith groups – Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Muslim, and Buddhist – and more than 120 denominations, which gives Soldiers of all religions that choice of Chaplain to talk to.

“The chaplain corps has been around since 1775 providing religious support and, more recently, spiritual fitness and supportive help,” said U.S. Army Col. Robert Allman, command chaplain of the 21st TSC. “We love Soldiers and their families. And we want to be there wherever the Soldiers are. And if that means in the motor pool, deployed, in the office, wherever they are, we’re there for them. And we’re honored to serve them.“

Spent Brass: Europe’s Defender Challenge

U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa security forces military personnel walk to a pre-brief for the USAFE Defender Challenge Selection at the Breitenwald Training Area, Landstuhl, July 31. The pre-brief provided more information for the next challenge, an advanced rifle and pistol event.

Tyler Karr, 435th Contingency Response Group flight chief, fires a M18 pistol during an advanced rifle and pistol event for the U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa Defender Challenge Selection at the Breitenwald Training Area, Landstuhl, July 31. Beat the back-to-school rush: TRICARE preventive health checks for kids

of active duty service members can get annual eye exams. Children of retired service members with TRICARE Prime can get routine eye exams every two years.

Some children are also eligible for dental or vision coverage through the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program. If your child has FEDVIP coverage, be sure to follow the rules of that plan.

Find a provider

Do you need to find a new doctor or dentist for your kids?

TRICARE’s Find a Doctor tool can

help you find nearby providers. If you have TDP, you can use the Find a Dentist tool to search for local TDP network dentists. When you visit the provider, make sure to mention any concerns about your children’s health. By taking time this summer to focus on your children’s health, you can help them get off to a good start this school year.

Ramstein C-130s get a makeover

Whether your child needs a school physical or you want to check on their development, TRICARE covers many preventive health services at no cost to your family.

Summer is a great time to take care of health checkups for your kids. Your child’s school likely requires students to get an annual health exam and be up to date on vaccines. With a new school year around the corner, don’t delay medical appointments for your kids.

“Most schools have mandatory health standards children must meet each school year,” said Jeannine Pickrell, registered nurse, nurse consultant for Disease Management & Population Health at the Defense Health Agency. “It helps to get required back to school health checks before the last minute. Summer vacation is also a perfect time to get other health care services for your kids, like dental and eye exams.”

Whether your child needs a school physical or you want to check on their development, TRICARE covers many preventive health services at no cost to your family. Below is important information about back to school checkups for your kids.

Follow school health care requirements

Check with your child’s school for their health policy. Depending on these requirements, you may need to schedule more than one office visit for your child.

For the youngest children, TRICARE covers wellchild exams from birth until age 6. Starting at age 6, TRICARE covers physicals required for school enrollment.

TRICARE doesn’t cover annual sports physicals, which are separate from school physicals.

Even if your child’s school doesn’t require a physical, kids can still get preventive checkups. Annual Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (HP&DP) exams are available to any TRICARE enrollee over age 6.

TRICARE also covers routine immunizations, also known as vaccinations. Your provider will review your child’s immunization records to confirm your child is uptodate and meets school requirements. You can get covered vaccines from any TRICAREauthorized provider at no cost. However, you may have to pay copayments or cost shares for

other services received during the same office visit. You can also get some covered vaccines at no cost at TRICARE retail network pharmacies. At retail network pharmacies, make sure a pharmacist gives the vaccines to avoid potential outofpocket costs.

Get additional wellness checkups

There’s more to your child’s wellness than a routine physical can detect. Use this extra time to check all aspects of their health.

For example, you can schedule an appointment with your child’s dentist. Your TRICARE health plan doesn’t include dental coverage. However, active duty family members and National Guard and Reserve family members can purchase dental coverage through the TRICARE Dental Program. TDP covers two routine dental cleanings in a consecutive 12month period for children ages 1 and older, as described in the TRICARE Dental Program Handbook. You can enroll in TDP at any time.

Your child may also be able to get a routine eye exam. This depends on their beneficiary status, health plan, and age. Children

U.S. Air Force Airmen from the 86th Maintenance Squadron painted liberation stripes and added decals to six C130J Super Hercules aircraft in honor of American heritage, which will be displayed during the 80th anniversary of DDay, June 6, 2024, over Normandy, France. The stripes and designations were used on aircraft during the storming of the beaches of Normandy, June 6, 1944, also known as DDay, to provide coordination between the ground parties and the air parties. Letters and numbers were painted on the sides of the aircraft so the paratroopers would know which aircraft to board for the operation. This allowed the prevention of friendly fire. A Douglas C47 Skytrain aircraft named Whiskey Seven was the first to cross enemy lines to drop paratroopers. It is recognized for its service with the addition of the insignia, W7, to the liberation stripes on the C130s at Ramstein AB.

“We get the sole honor in the Air Force of applying liberation stripes to our aircraft in celebration of 80 years of NATO air superiority in Europe,” said Tech. Sgt. Garrett Magnie, 86th Maintenance Squadron aircraft structural maintenance noncommissioned officer in charge. “The 37th Troop Carrier Squadron, now known as the 37th Airlift Squadron, flew Whiskey Seven over enemy airspace. Historically the 37th can lay claim to be a part of the Normandy liberation.”

The painting process includes outlining the borders of the stripes, sanding, using various chemicals to clean the area of debris, and lastly painting the aircraft and applying the decals.

“It’s been an honor to have an opportunity to work on this project,” said Airman 1st Class Christopher Gillis, 86th MXS aircraft structural maintenance apprentice. “I feel lucky to be able to pay homage all these years later to those who have sacrificed their lives and to be able to see our stripes that we painted fly in the sky.”

ABC IN KMC: Genealogy in Kaiserslautern

Studies have shown that approximately 17 percent of Americans claim German roots. But, did you know that at least 300,000 emigrants left the Palatinate region with Kaiserslautern right in the heart of it, mainly in the mid to late 1800s? Based on geographical size and population, an area that encompasses the southern part of today’s RheinlandPfalz and Saarland, emigrants from the Palatinate region made up the largest group of emigrants in percent in Germany. Some of them became famous caricaturists, businessmen and musicians, while others may have returned to their roots or kept close ties and even supported their hometown communities.

The Institute for Palatinate History and Ethnology (Institut für pfälzische Geschichte und Volkskunde IPGV) has been based in Kaiserslautern in a picturesque 1900style villa since the mid 1950s. It has a wealth of information with a wide collection of books, literature and documents ranging throughout centuries of regional history as well as ship manifests with emigrant data.

The collection includes documentation from the early era to Middle Age life and times in the region to historical records of the period of the ThirtyYearWar (1618

1648) when 70 percent of the Palatinate’s population was wiped out. In addition, there are valuable resources to search Jewish traces and lots of history about castles. It also describes the wave of immigration into the region with people coming from Switzerland, Austria, France and Italy making the region an early melting pot of cultures. Various periods of history are documented from Barbarossa, the Electoral Palatinate, the Bavarian reign and the postwar occupation periods.

A large wave of emigration to the New World occurred in the 1800s when many Palatinates left their homes, partially due to poor economic conditions, poverty or social unrest. Complete towns or larger religious groupings such as Mennonites or Huguenots sailed away for religious freedom and a group around

Francis Daniel Pastorius founded Germantown, Pennsylvania as early as 1683. Later in time some sought freedom of speech after the German Revolution in 1848/49 and others just wanted to establish businesses and seek their fortunes in the New World.

Thomas Nast, born in Landau became known as a famous American caricaturist, who created the donkey and elephant images for political parties and designed the Uncle Sam illustration. Isidor Straus of Otterberg served as a representative and became coowner of Macy’s Department store in New York City, while Heinrich Jacob of Mackenbach became famous as “Bill Henry” with his “Headliners” band.

Many of the emigrants from the Palatinate settled in Pennsylvania with similar climate conditions

and fertile soil, and maintained their homeland dialect, which came to be known as Pennsylvania Dutch. It is said that about 100,00 Pennsylvanians still speak the language of their forefathers. A newspaper called “Der Pfälzer in Amerika” was founded in New York in 1880 by the brothers Voelcker from Edenkoben.

The paper was intended to keep immigrants informed about their homeland from 18841917. Original copies of the original newspaper are kept at the IPGV archives. Another paper entitled “Hiwwe wie driwwe” was established in the 1990s and published in Palatinate dialect. In addition, the County of Kaiserslautern has enjoyed close ties to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania for sixty years.

The institute not only has records of about 300,000 emigrants and a

data base is currently being developed to simplify genealogical research for the public interested in tracing their roots. The data base holds information about family names, parents, siblings, children and other kin, towns of origin to places of immigration and even possible return.

It also collects original handwritten letters from emigrants to their families at home, has documents about original floor plans and how certain streets were named in cities or towns, who properties belonged to and has a library with 30,000 books.

The institute is currently working on further projects such as Palatinate customs and traditions, forced labor during World War II and early women’s movements. It is also planning to offer a type of open house event later in the year with further information to be announced.

The work of the IPGV rests on the pillars of research, education and consultation. It has its own publishing house with a scientific series, houses its own research library and holds collections of culturalhistorical interest items. The friendly staff is happy to assist in genealogical or historical research and the library is open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 912 a.m. Individual appointments can also be booked at info@institut.bvpfalz.de. GACO CORNER

Welcome to our informational series on driving in Germany. Last week we discussed rules of driving behavior on the Autobahn. This week our driving topic is when and how to form an emergency vehicle lane on the Autobahn.

It’s not as complicated and messy as it looks in the picture, we promise.

As soon as a traffic jam forms and cars are going at walking speed or standing still, an emergency lane must be formed. The basic rule is that the emergency lane is formed between the left lane and the other lanes, as shown in the picture.

The fine for not forming an emergency lane could be at least €200 and could include a driving ban for a month. If you are driving in the emergency lane you will be fined at least €240 and are subject to a driving ban of one month.

The same applies for motorcycles, they are also not allowed to use the emergency vehicle lane.

Next week we will discuss the rules on merging in traffic, or Reissverschlussverfahren.

Maastricht underground (literally)

One of the coolest — and most unique — experiences in Maastricht is hidden from sight. The Maastricht Underground, which is accessible from the imposing Fort Sint Pieter, offers a reallife labyrinth beneath the city.

And it truly is a labyrinth. There are no lights. It contains tens of thousands of passages, and anyone who tries to go in without a guide (which is not legal, so don’t do it) will likely become so lost that they wouldn’t survive (which has happened). Thankfully, guided tours in English are available. They begin at Fort Sint Pieter, and can be booked ahead of time.

The tour, which lasts about an hour, is well worth it. Some of the passages are decorated with amazing drawings, and visitors learn about the history of the amaz

ing complex. Impressively, the Nazis never cracked the secrets of the Underground during World War II, and the tunnels were used to shuttle people to safety for years. Once you’re inside, you’ll be amazed at how quickly you become disoriented, and how grateful you are to have a guide.

Explore the city center

Exploring the city center on foot or by bike is the perfect way to see Maastricht. Begin in the Market Square, which is home to Maastricht’s centuriesold city hall. On Saturdays, there are fantastic flea markets there, as well.

Then, you can wander in almost any direction and be charmed. The city has so many fabulous shops (the rubber ducky store is almost as cool as the Dominican Bookstore, which is located inside an old church) that you really can’t go wrong. There is also the Mosae Forum, which is a beautiful covered shopping center, next to

the Market Square, that also houses the aptly named Museum of Illusions.

As you near the river, you’ll be amazed at the variety of restaurants and pubs. Walk for a while. Then stop, have a refreshment, and watch the world float past.

St. Servatius Basilica

Speaking of wonders in the city center, the Basilica of St. Servatius is a must. Nestled between three lovely squares (Vrijthof square, Keizer Karelplein, and Henric van Veldekeplein) in the historic center of Maastricht, it’s the oldest standing church in the Netherlands: There’s been a church on this site for more than 1,400 years.

Secrets of the Sphinx Quarter

Maastricht’s Sphinxkwartier (Sphinx Quarter) is well worth a visit, too. This innovative, industrial neighborhood is

The basilica is built in a Romanesque style, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is also supposedly built upon the grave of St. Servatius, who was a 4th century bishop in nearby Tongeren, and contains his remains. Guided tours in English are available.

located in the lesserknown old factory district near the Maas River. It’s considered one of the coolest neighborhoods in the city, thanks to the blend of new and old.

While you’re there, you can certainly find great restaurants and pubs. Visitors can also catch a movie in an old power plant at the Lumiere Cinema, sleep in a refurbished factory at The Student Hotel, or check out the Sphinxpassage, a long, tiled corridor that tells the story of how the Quarter came to be.

Getting there

By car, Maastricht is approximately 3 hours from Kaiserslautern and Wiesbaden, and 5 hours from Stuttgart. Check with Deutsche Bahn for train information.
