US Army Garrison Rheinland Pfalz Army Substance Abuse Program presents month-long events for Suicide Prevention Month

In observance of Suicide Prevention Month, the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Army Substance Abuse Program has formed a Coalition Empowered Community Team, which has organized a series of impactful events aimed at raising awareness and fostering dialogue around suicide prevention. The month-long initiative will run from Sep. 1 to 28.

As part of these efforts, the community is invited to attend four powerful suicide prevention plays entitled “Second Chance.” The play is being offered at multiple times and locations to ensure maximum participation:

• Sep. 6 at the Sembach Tiger Theater – 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

• Sep. 7 at the Ramstein Officers Club – 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.

• Sep. 15 at the Heaton Auditorium, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center – 1:30 p.m.

• Sep. 25 and 27 at the Baumholder Wagon Wheel Theater – 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

These performances allow attendees to choose a convenient slot to participate and ensure ample opportunities for members of the community to attend and engage

in the conversation surrounding suicide prevention. The plays are performed by both Soldiers and Airmen and are designed to spark meaningful discussions about mental health, suicide prevention, and the importance of seeking help when needed.

By leveraging the power of storytelling and theater, the Army Substance Abuse Program aims to create an environment where attendees can connect, share experiences, and learn valuable strategies for supporting one another during challenging times.

The events are open to all community members, including service members, their families, civilian personnel, and anyone interested in promoting mental health awareness and suicide prevention.

“We believe in the power of unity and open conversation. During this Suicide Prevention Month, we’re coming together as a community to shed light on the critical importance of mental health awareness and suicide prevention,” said USAG-RP Garrison Commander Reid Furman. “Our commitment is unwavering — we stand side-by-side, fostering a safe environment where every individual is valued, and seeking help is a sign of strength.”

The annual base open house and airshow at Ramstein Air Base “Flugtag” on Aug. 28, 1988, ended in a disaster when a fighter jet from an Italian aerial team crashed after attempting a dangerous maneuver, colliding with other aircraft in the team. The team and falling debris crashed into the crowd, killing 70 and injuring over 400 people.

Michael Perry, the senior enlisted advisor to the deputy chief of staff, visited Smith Barracks and Wetzel Kaserne in Baumholder, Aug. 8. The purpose of the visit was to survey building infrastructure where Soldiers and their families reside, and to get a better understanding of their needs and overall quality of life. The visit concluded with a lunch with Soldiers at the Knight’s Lair Warrior dining facility.

435th CRG, 86th AE defend, save lives during simulated base attack

U.S. Air Force Airmen from the 435th Contingency Response Group defend the base in a Humvee during a simulated base attack while a 37th Airlift Squadron C-130J Super Hercules aircraft performs touch-and-go landings at Cheshnegirovo Air Base, Bulgaria, Aug. 8. This was part of Thracian Summer 2023, a flying training exercise, which allowed the 435th CRG and the 37th AS to practice interoperability with the Bulgarian air force showing the U.S. force’s ability to adapt in dynamic security environments.

US, German partnership recognition ceremony in Sankt Goar

A U.S. and German Partnership Recognition ceremony was held to celebrate their history and continued partnership in Sankt Goar, Aug. 15. Mr. Falko Hoenisch, the mayor of St. Goar, presided over the ceremony where the 21st Theater Sustainment Command and Bundeswehr Medical Regiment 2 were in attendance. U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Karen Monday-Gresham, commanding general of the 7th Mission Support Command and deputy commanding general of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, was also in attendance as the main representative of the 21st TSC.

Through their partnership, the 21st TSC, Bundeswehr Medical Battalion, and the city of Sankt Goar have solidified a future exercise based on medical readiness and training that will benefit every organization involved.

All three organizations have previously partnered over things such as a volunteer cleanup in Sankt Goar earlier this year to help rebuild stairs near a national monument that was then cleaned of branches, roots, and extra brush after a storm hit the city. Events like this allow U.S. Army and Bundeswehr Soldiers to build camaraderie and help strengthen partnerships between everyone involved.

DAF selects JetZero to develop blended wing body aircraft prototype

The Department of the Air Force selected JetZero for the next phase of a blended wing body prototype aircraft project Aug. 16.

The effort aims to mature BWB technology and demonstrate its capabilities, giving the department and commercial industry more options for future air platforms.

With a design that differs from a traditional tube-and-wing aircraft, the BWB blends the aircraft body into its high-aspect-ratio wing, decreasing aerodynamic drag by at least 30 percent and providing additional lift. This increased efficiency will enable extended range, more loiter time, and increased payload delivery efficiencies, capabilities that are vital to mitigating logistics risks.

“Blended wing body aircraft have the potential to significantly reduce fuel demand and increase global reach,” said Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall. “Moving forces and cargo quickly, efficiently, and over long distance is a critical capability to enable national security strategy.”

Several military transport configurations are possible with the BWB. Together, these aircraft types account for approximately 60 percent of the Air Force’s total annual jet fuel consumption.

As outlined in the fiscal year 2023 National Defense Authorization Act, the Department of Defense plans to invest $235 million over the next four years to fast-track the development of this transformational dual-use technology, with additional private investment expected. The effort is the result of collaboration between the Department of the Air Force, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the Defense Innovation Unit, with assistance from the DOD’s Office of Strategic Capital.

“It’s been a little over a hundred years since a few brave Airmen took to the skies and proved the first aerial refueling capability, extending the global reach of our Air Force. This announcement marks another game-changing milestone for the Air Force in our efforts to maintain the advantage of airpower effectiveness against any future competitors,” said Dr. Ravi Chaudhary, assistant secretary of the Air Force for Energy, Installations, and Environment. A former C-17 Globemaster III pilot and engineer, Chaudhary is

leading efforts to ensure efficiencies in operational energy to build greater agility for theater commanders.

While the BWB concept has been around for decades, more recent technology advancements in structural design, materials technology, manufacturing, and other areas have made large-scale production achievable.

The commercial industry, including passenger airlines and air freight companies, stand to benefit from development of this technology as well, increasing available cabin or cargo space while decreasing operational fuel costs.

The Air Force Operational Energy Office expects completion of initial flight testing as early as 2027.

US Army Reserve Soldier helps provide emergency assistance to family involved in motor-vehicle collision

What started off as just another routine annual training event in Cass Lake, Minnesota, quickly developed into something much more for one Army Reserve Soldier, who found herself on the front lines of saving lives in a real-world situation that she won’t soon forget.

“It was surreal, it was unexpected,” said U.S. Army Reserve Spc. Ana Baker, a healthcare specialist, assigned to the 399th Field Hospital, 803rd Hospital Center, 804th Medical Brigade, 3rd Medical Command.

Baker was with her unit conducting a real-life medical assistance mission with the local civilian community providing no cost dental and medical care as part of an Innovative Readiness Training mission. The IRT was part of Operation Walking Shield, a joint medical assistance operation with the Minnesota Army National Guard.

“The Innovative Readiness Training missions provide patient care to select communities within the United States,” said Capt. Jamie Eastman, company commander, 451st Medical Detachment, 405th Field Hospital. “They are not only a benefit to those communities in need, but also to the Soldiers who are involved in providing care by helping them to maintain proficiency in their medical skills.”

During the community mission, the Emergency Medical Services provider for the region offered ride-along shifts in their ambulances to the Soldiers who are healthcare specialists. This provided an opportunity for the Soldiers to gain civilian EMS experience in addition to performing their primary IRT mission.

“EMS ride-alongs and hospital clinical experiences are vital for ensuring proficiency of U.S. Army medical providers,” said Eastman. “Many National Guard and Reserve

Soldiers have a civilian medical career to maintain proficiency, but not all have the capability. Training opportunities like this ensure Soldiers are ready to respond when the mission calls.”

It was on one of these ride-alongs that Baker’s otherwise normal day would quickly change into one filled with excitement and drama. “I was scheduled to go with the ambulance crew for a few hours that afternoon,” said Baker, who had never been in an ambulance before. “I had heard Soldiers who had gone earlier in the day talking about how it was boring and that nothing had happened, so I took a book to read expecting to have plenty of down time. About 20 minutes into the shift the EMTs [emergency medical technicians] got a call and they just said, ‘we gotta go.’ I just thought, oh my goodness what is going on.”

Within moments the ambulance roared to life. With the siren blaring and emergency lights flashing, Baker and her EMS crew quickly made their way to the scene of a motor vehicle collision that had left a pregnant mother and her three young children in desperate need of emergency trauma care.

“I was riding in the back of the ambulance on the way there and I was nervous and excited and wondering what to expect,” said Baker. “I managed to put on my reflective vest and gloves and was just watching the EMTs and following their cues.

When we stopped, I could see a car that had ran off the road and had slammed into a tree backwards. There were several people already on the scene, and one of them, a bystander, handed me an 18-monthold boy, who had been involved in the collision. I took him into the back of the ambulance where I helped take his vital signs and assess him for injures.”

Soon another child from the accident would be brought into the ambulance as well. This time it was

a two-year-old girl who had a large bump on her forehead.

Baker, who has a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications and psychology, spent the next hour on the scene with the children, doing her best to keep them calm and entertained while the responding emergency medical personnel called for a life-flight helicopter for the mother. Eventually the children would be treated and released to family members on the scene.

“It was an unfortunate situation, but it’s real life, and sometimes bad things happen in real life,” said Baker, a native of Jamaica. “I learned a lot from this experience. I saw how the EMTs approached the scene, how they interacted with the patients and young children and how they had a special approach to dealing with people in a situation like that to help them not only physically, but emotionally as well.”

Baker remembered how her Army medical training had helped prepare her for the stressful situation. “In our initial training we had a civilian instructor that would shout at us and really put a lot of added stress and pressure on us,” she said. “I see now why he did that. That added level of stress in my training helped me be calm during this real-life situation.”

Not only did those on the scene witness Baker’s calm demeanor and helpful medical expertise, but she also made an impression on her superiors.

“Spc. Baker is a passionate and motivated Soldier in our field hospital,” said Eastman. “Her drive and character were put to the challenge during this motor vehicle collision, where she was able to provide patient care in conjunction with the EMTs from the Leech Lake Ambulance. We are proud of her and the service she provided to the community."

Looking to the future, Baker says she is hoping to get promoted soon, and is looking for an opportunity to deploy. “I want to deploy and see

what that’s like,” she said. “While I’m serving in the Army Reserve I’ll continue to look forward to my annual training and just soak up as much information I can.”

She also plans to take additional classes to help her prepare for a future leadership role.

With her unit training complete and the incident now a memory, Baker reflects back on that incredible day. “I was in the right place at the right time,” she said. “It opened my eyes to a lot of things, and it’s an experience I’ll definitely remember for years to come.”

Calling Houston, Texas, his hometown, Wyatt is the golf course superintendent for Morale, Welfare and Recreation or MWR.

His primary duties include managing labor and materials and coordinating operations used to care for turfgrass and landscaping. He is also the liaison for the German Golf Club at the Rolling Hills Golf Club on Smith Barracks in Baumholder.

Wyatt has been working for USAG Rheinland-Pfalz for one year and has been in the civil service for four years.

“This is a tough one because I believe I have the best job in the world. Every day is a new challenge testing my knowledge and skills. My hobby is horticulture so every day I go to work doing things I would do for fun

love.”

Overall, both military men and women were nearly twice as likely to report feeling high levels of stress in their military work (39 percent) than in their family life (22 percent), according to the National Library of Medicine.

Having networks and relationships that can offer physical and psychological support can help military members and their families feel a sense of belonging and community.

Keesler provides multiple resources for Airmen and their families who may need the support, including four-legged friends.

“Having a therapy animal creates connections between people where sometimes they may be

hesitant to start a conversation,” said LisaMarie Mariglia, 81st Training Wing violence prevention integrator. “You can talk to your resiliency trainers and violence prevention facilitators, but some people feel a burden when they ask. Part of my job is bringing people together to be healthy, and people naturally gravitate towards other living things.”

Mariglia worked with 81st Training Wing leadership to implement a pet therapy team at the wing level. She and her bernedoodle, Charlotte, conduct morale visits around base.

In addition to the wing pet therapy team, volunteers with Visiting Pet Teams of South Mississippi visit patients and staff at the Keesler Medical Center and technical training students at the Levitow Training Support Facility.

“On Thursdays, we have inprocessing Airmen come to the Levitow for Right Start, where different base organizations set up for the Airmen and then we have the dogs here,” said Tech. Sgt. Kristen Doyle, 335th Training Squadron military training leader.

The therapy dogs are trained to interact with and provide comfort to people and help provide a sense of home to new technical training Airmen who are adjusting to Air Force life. The VPTSM Keesler pet therapy coordinator, Sandie Schlett, explained she often hears about Airmen’s pets when she and her therapy dog, Xena, are at Keesler.

“You just see people’s faces light up and it takes their mind off what’s going on for a minute, gives them a little mental break,” said Schlett.

US, Serbian military forces conduct first flight formation

For the first time in over 20 years, the U.S. Air Force and Serbian air force partnered together to conduct the first helicopter flight formation in history and participate in rotary wing search and rescue operations, Aug. 7-11, at Batajnica Air Base and Sgt./Pilot Mihajlo Petrovic Air Base, Serbia.

To mark the beginning of this partnership training, a Serbian air force H145M and U.S. Air Force HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopter flew in formation to Serbia with U.S. Ambassador to Serbia, Christopher R. Hill, on board, followed by pre-flight procedures, and briefings on search and rescue tactics for the remainder of the week.

“Having Ambassador Hill present during the formation flight shows not only solidarity between the Department of State and Department of Defense, but also our support and commitment to maintaining great relations with the Serbian military,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Erik Silva, 435th Contingency Response Support Squadron aircraft maintenance air advisor.

The hands-on training and instructional time were spent between American Airmen and Serbian airmen where both groups shared knowledge on search and rescue tactics and procedures.

“Throughout the training and discussions held this week, we hope the Serbian military can gain some of our search and rescue knowledge acquired from trial and error,” said Staff Sgt. Noah Davila, 56th Rescue Squadron special missions aviator. “And in the future they can become search and rescue experts as well.”

This interoperability enables seamless coordination during joint operations, ensuring an effective and efficient response to potential threats, Davila said.

“The U.S. seeks to be the partner of choice for capability and interoperability across Europe, for NATO and non-NATO members.”

The partnership between the U.S. Air Force and Serbian air force in conducting training such as these, not only strengthens bilateral relations, but also contributes to regional stability.

“In the future, we plan to further our cooperation by conducting more joint flights, and expand to rescue demonstrations outside Serbia, where both the SAFAD and the U.S. Air Force can demonstrate how each country is able to perform search and rescue,” Silva said. “In addition, we hope to incorporate medical evacuation scenarios and operate together to conduct these training scenarios.”

Welcome to our informational series on driving in Germany. Last week we discussed merging lanes with the “the zipper system.” This week our driving topic is idling engines.

While it might seem practical in the winter to start your car’s engine and let it idle while the windows defrost and you get your stuff for work packed away and maybe get another cup of coffee, this is prohibited in Germany.

German law prohibits the unnecessary running of engines because it is noisy and pollutes the environment. As always, there’s a fine if this law is broken and fines can be up to €500.

In addition, it’s interesting to know that warming up your car’s engine while it’s standing is more likely to wear down the engine. It warms up quicker when driving and it also takes up less gas.

Shaped by rivers

Passau has been inhabited for millennia. Celts settled here thousands of years ago, and the Romans made it theirs, too. This ancient love for Passau’s location is not surprising, considering that the city sits at the confluence of the Danube, Inn, and Ilz rivers.

For modern travelers, this confluence is fantastic, because it offers natural beauty, culture, history, education and entertainment. There are also chances to get up close and personal with the water. Not surprisingly, boat tours are plentiful, and really well done. There are also loads of riverside walks, which offer peace, quiet (sometimes), and lovely views (almost always). The famous Schaibling Tower is a popular destination on the Dreiflüsseeck (three-river confluence) peninsula.

The peninsula itself is awesome. A sprawling, wonderful pedestrian zone — loaded with shops, restaurants, bars, and more — covers most of it. Naturally, there is a feeling of perpetual positive energy in downtown Passau. It’s as if the ceaseless motion of the three rivers affects all who encounter them.

A fortress worth exploring

The mighty Fortress Veste Oberhaus is located just across the Danube from the

Dreiflüsseeck. More than 800 years old, the Veste Oberhaus is one of the bestpreserved hilltop castles in Europe.

It also offers the best views in Passau, and the best views of Passau. Once inside, visitors can enjoy the fascinating Oberhausmuseum, which provides insights into the east-west cultural mix that defines Passau. Kids (and lots of

adults, too) will love the antique fire truck exhibit, the suits of armor, the crowns, and the jewels. They’ll love exploring the castle even more. Visitors have a lot of leeway to look around once inside.

One cathedral, one organ, 17,974 pipes St. Stephen’s Cathedral is probably Passau’s most-visited landmark. For

good reason, too: the place is incredible. Located in the heart of the pedestrian zone, its green bulb domes are the defining feature of Passau’s cityscape, and the interior is gilded and massive. Even for veteran European church tourists, St. Stephen’s is impressive.

It also lays claim to the largest organ in the world, with nearly 18,000 pipes (for comparison, Paris’ famous Cathedral de Notre Dame “only” has 8,000 pipes). Accordingly, catching an organ concert is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Wander-ful Passau

Mostly, Passau is a magnificent place to wander. After seeing St. Stephen’s, visitors can relax in the adjacent Residenzplatz and admire the outstanding Wittelsbach Fountain. Not far away is the Höllgasse, with the unexpectedly colorful (and beautiful) Art Alley, where visitors can find dozens of artists. All around, there are places to shop, eat, drink, and explore.

And, once you’ve grown weary, there are always riverside benches. You’ll never want for a place to relax and watch the world drift past in Passau.

Getting there

By car, Passau is just over 5 hours from Kaiserslautern, just under 5 hours from Wiesbaden, and 4 hours from Stuttgart. Check with Deutsche Bahn for train information

ABC IN KMC: Energetic elephants

Anyone that has traveled to Alsenborn is sure to have encountered a giant elephant pulling a plow in a traffic circle leading into the village. Thinking about elephants you may picture herds of the mighty gray animals roaming the savannahs of Africa. Working elephants carrying large logs with their trunks in Asia or colorfully painted ones hauling tourists around India may come to your mind. But, an elephant pulling a plow with a farmer tagging along behind is definitely an uncommon sight.

Elephants can be seen in zoos and are sometimes taught tricks to delight circus visitors. This brings us somewhat closer to revealing the story behind our elephant. Similar to the wandering musicians in the Westpfalz region, there were numerous folks from Alsenborn who roamed the countryside as traveling circuses in the late 1850’s and beyond. Some made livings as musicians, marionette players, acrobats or animal

tamers and Alsenborn is commonly referred to as the “home of rope dancers” or “Bajasse,” an Italian name for their trade.

Since the circus folk mainly traveled during the summer months, they needed a place to stay during the dreary and cold winters. Farmers, on the other hand, couldn’t till or work their

fields, and allowed the circuses to use them as winter camps.

One of the few circus families that found a permanent home in Alsenborn was circus director Andreas Bügler who had six children. These were known as the best circus artists of the time, particularly famous for their rope acts. Son Jeromy then married

Magdalena Althoff who brought the oldest circus dynasty in Germany to Alsenborn in 1883.

The Bajasseum is a tiny museum that resembles a circus tent and focuses on the overall theme. It is located on the main road in the former sandstone fire department building. The annual village festival in September is named the “Bajasse

Kerwe” where you just might encounter a mini elephant or a few clowns in the parade on Sunday.

A clown is also pictured on the town hall fountain on the other side of the train tracks. Enkenbach. Enkenbach-Alsenborn has also been chosen as honorary town in the Musikantenland Westpfalz program to promote cultural and musical projects.

Back to our industrious elephant, farmers provided winter homes to the artists, musicians and circus animals and supplied them with nutrition and hay. The elephants who amazed spectators in the summer, but rested in winter, were grateful to pay back and assist farmers with pulling plows to till their fields and in return provide produce to the residents in Alsenborn. Our symbolic elephant was just one of the many, but most certainly carrying out an easy task for a mighty gray tusker. Alsenborn will be hosting its annual “Bajazze Kerwe” (village festival) from Sep. 2–5, with the parade on Sunday afternoon. Don’t miss out on the fun!
