Team versus individuals; fostering team success
COMMENTARY
by Chief Master Sgt. Jeffrey Kernodle 786th Civil Engineer Squadron chief enlisted manager Are we creating a culture of “team” or one of “individuals”? As leaders, we are expected to develop effective, efficient teams and merge the talents of our subordinates. However, it’s easy to shift our focus toward individual recognition, and it has the potential to come at the expense of team success. Whatever we emphasize will become the priority of our organizations. As priorities shift toward the individual instead of the team, so does the cultural mindset. When our cultural mindset believes that individual success is more important than team suc-
cess, we lose our team’s loyalty. If people feel they are only rewarded for their personal achievements, we run the risk of losing every individual’s loyalty to the team. Why be a “team player” when it doesn’t result in recognition, promotion or advancement? When the cultural bias leans towards individual performance, individuals will start seeing their teammates as competitors instead of colleagues. Reinforcing the mindset of individual over team can also have the unintentional effect of creating an environment of information hoarding, undermining and ultimately negatively affecting the mission effectiveness of your organization. All of this isn’t to say that we should not be individually

Catherine Ortega, 10th AEOT officer in charge. “Whether (there are) 40 patients or one, an infant or a wounded warrior, American or allied force, we work our hardest to deliver unsurpassed mission and crew support.” The patients were transported to Ramstein on a C-17 Globemaster III and for one of the pilots, this was his first AE mission. “This is one of the most humbling experiences I have had in my career,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Mychol Alexander, 816th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron aircraft commander. “To be able to bring someone out of the combat zone and work

Airmen from several career fields utilized their training while working together to save the lives of the injured service members. The patients were transported to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center to receive further care.

rewarding our stellar performers. The challenge lies with aligning team and individual accomplishments. When leadership is able to shift emphasis towards collaboration and the team’s success while making individual accomplishments a subset, the team is more likely to thrive. While a team may have one MVP-caliber individual, every member of that team needs to first be judged by the overall success of the team, how they advance the team and then by their individual performance. When individuals see leadership rewarding them using a team-first mindset, they will shift their priorities as well. As their priorities shift toward team success, the organization will foster a culture of teamwork. Former San Francisco 49er
head coach Bill Walsh said it well, “victory is produced by and belongs to all. Winning a Super Bowl results from your whole team not only doing their individual jobs but perceiving that those jobs contributed to overall success. The trophy doesn’t belong just to a superstar, CEO or head coach.” In the Air Force, our “victory” is measured by our ability to execute our primary mission, “fly, fight and win in air, space and cyberspace.” While we may not all walk away with a trophy, by correctly targeting our recognition programs and ensuring individual recognition is tied to team success, we not only foster a team-first culture, but we guarantee continued victory.

commanders and Airmen, Ray stressed the importance of remembering why what they do is important. “When you’re driving home every day, remember the reason we come to work — to produce air power,” Ray said. “Being in
this location, we influence everything important. What the Airmen do every day is so valuable to the mission and isn’t lost on me, but I need your help making sure when they come to work every day, they remember the power comes from here.”

86th AW to host Commander’s Challenge by Airman 1st Class Tryphena Mayhugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Airlift Wing is scheduled to host its third Commander’s Challenge from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 9 at the Ramstein Southside Fitness Center as a part of the 86th AW Resilience Day. The purpose of Resilience Day is to create an atmosphere where Airmen can utilize and sustain the four domains of the Comprehensive Airmen Fitness program, also known by U.S. Air Forces in Europe as the RUFit program. These domains include physical, social, spiritual and mental wellness. “There is tremendous emphasis on resilience programs to bolster the ability of our Airmen and families to withstand the challenges of military life,� said Jan Devitt, 86th AW community support coordinator. “The Air Force understands we can only be successful when the Air Force community, as a whole, takes care of each other.� Resilience Day features the

These activities also serve as a setting for camaraderie and socializing, another domain of the CAF program. “The Resilience Day is about getting out of the office, having fun, meeting new friends and cheering on Team Ramstein,� Devitt said. “Many people are away from their genetic families, so we are their family here.� For the spiritual side of the program, the 86th AW chaplains plan to host a barbecue from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. during the event. • The 86th Munitions Squadron will conduct a 100 percent munitions stockpile inventory Sept. 7 to 11. During this time, the munitions storage area will be closed to all account custodians. Only emergency issue requests approved by the respective group commander may be submitted. • The Ramstein Clinic will forecast a closure on Sept. 10 for a training day. From downtown Landstuhl on the main street, Kaiserstrasse, follow the white signs for U.S. Hospital and other signs for Bann, Mittelbrunn and Burg Nanstein. The U.S. Hospital signs will guide motorists toward signs for Gate 3 and Dr. Hitzelberger Strasse. Take the A62 exit toward Trier, then take the first exit, Hütschenhausen, and get back on A62 in the other direction toward Pirmasens. Coming from Ramstein Air Base, motorists can take the back road toward Hütschenhausen and get on A62 in the direction for Pirmasens.

Bike registration
The 86th Security Forces Squadron and the German Polizei will hold a bicycle registration program for the KMC from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday near the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center’s main entrance on Ramstein. A registration number will be engraved in an inconspicuous location on bicycles which will aid law enforcement personnel in identifying lost or stolen bicycles. The service is free for all bicycles in a household and owners will receive a registration certificate which is unique to the bicycles. Upon sale or transfer of the bicycle to a new owner, the registration certificate would also be transferrable. KMC members cycle for STEM Story and photos by Senior Airman Jonathan Stefanko 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Cyclists from the KMC embarked on a three-day bike trip Aug. 1 to 3 along the Rhine River in Germany to raise money and awareness for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics education programs. The Cycle for STEM proceeds gained by sponsors before the 150 mile trek from Bonn to Ramstein, Germany, helped provide scholarships and grants to deserving STEM students and teachers. “We brought Cycle for STEM to Europe with the intent to help improve the local Department of Defense
Dependents Schools here,” said Master Sgt. Etienne Tousignant, lead cyclist. “These children are our legacy, and we want them to have the knowledge they need to take our place one day.” With the goal to improve education, the team was motivated to work long before the 150 mile journey to prepare themselves. “All together we logged hundreds upon hundreds of miles training and getting our bodies ready,” Tousignant said. “There was a lot of sweat and a lot of sun, but it was worth it.” Though strenuous, the enthusiasts pushed through their Cycle for STEM adventure. “Never in my life have I seen anything like this,” Tousignant said. “There seems to be gorgeous castles at every corner. There are luscious vineyards across the mountainsides, and, of course, the Rhine River is breathtaking. I have done this ride four times, and every time I see something different that amazes me.” With children of his own, Tousignant hopes to continue participating in these fundraisers and help pave a better
future for them. “My boys are my legacy,” Tousignant said. “It feels great being able to help improve their lives and seeing how excited the team is to do the same is incredible. 435th CRG, Ukrainian AF ramp up airfields by Tech. Sgt. Brandon Williams 435th Contingency Response Group-Detachment 1 Air Advisor Flight Members of the 435th Contingency Response Group spent eight days with their Ukrainian air force partners at Kulbakino and StaroKonstantinov Air Bases, Ukraine building and enhancing cooperation between the U.S. and Ukraine. From July 12 to 20, the team conducted two expeditionary airfield assessments, working with their hosts from Ukraine’s 299th Assault Brigade and the 7th Tactical Aviation Brigade, to identify requirements to bring their respective airfields to NATO standards. “This event is a great opportunity to strengthen our partnership with our Ukrainian allies,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Paul Weskalnies, 435th CRG-Det 1 Plans and Operations deputy director and lead air adviser for this event. “By performing the assessment and sharing lessons learned, we furthered our working relationship and accomplished a task beneficial to both of our countries.” Twelve Airmen from three CRG

units, 435th CRG-Detachment 1, 435th Air Mobility Squadron and the 435th Construction and Training Squadron, assessed airfield conditions, availability of support services and the general operational
and support environment around the airfield. They also familiarized Ukrainian air force personnel on NATO-interoperable airfield requirements. The assessment team met with
several subject matter experts from the Ukrainian air force and discussed topics ranging from air base security to support services. They also discussed considerations for exercises and future partnership building events. “Bringing the variety of subject matter experts allowed us to interact with more of our Ukrainian counterparts.” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Adrian Espinosa, 435th CRG-Det 1 Air Advisor Flight air adviser and fuel specialist. “We each came back with observations that could lead to future security cooperation engagements.” The assessments came from a Ukraine and U.S. joint commission established in October 2014. The commission’s goal is to build an achievable, sustainable engagement plan to institute fundamental reform, build capability, grow capacity and develop transformed Ukrainian armed forces. According to Weskalnies, the assessment marked another successful event for the dedicated Airmen of the 435th CRG. Both countries learned a great deal from one another and continued to enhance interoperability and build mutual respect with each other.

Brocuglio 130th Public Affairs Detachment, Connecticut Army National Guard HOHENFELS, Germany — A joint team from the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Army conducted the first C-130J Super Hercules landing at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center in over two years July 29. The test landing is a precursor to Exercise Swift Response 15, which will
occur at Hohenfels in August. “Today certifies and validates the landing sequence that is going to take place as part of Swift Response,” said Capt. Matthew D. Pride, an exercise planner for JMRC. “The intent is to have 42 landing sequences. This was an opportunity to touchdown before final execution.” Exercise Swift Response 15 will include loading and airdropping approximately 1,400 multinational service members within a four-hour window.

Texas Army National Guard, Troop Construction Program, JMRC. “The purpose (of this revamped STOL) is to integrate airfield operations into training with multinational and allied partners.” The short takeoff and landing, known as STOL, was a small strip up until June when it was extended by the 201st Red Horse Squadron, Pennsylvania Air National Guard, to support larger aircraft. “It was the Air National Guard that did all the work. They did the design and then started the construction,” Pinto said. “JMRC brought them here and made sure they were supported. It was good to see all the hard work come together.” STOL has been suspended for the last two years from landing C-130 aircraft. More recently, the airstrip was only able to support unmanned aerial vehicle and helicopter landings. The airstrip had to be surveyed and signed off by the airfield commander on Ramstein, and the landing and takeoff was the final phase to clear the airstrip. “It’s huge,” Hough said, commenting on the additional capabilities of the new air-
strip. “This is the only dirt, or semi-prepared, landing zone in Germany.” Landing on a semi-prepared strip is a requirement for operations to stay current, and this field will now provide that opportunity for allies, partners and American forces to improve interoperability of air operations. “This strip enhances the capability of the training center and allows us to bring in a complex set of training exercises and scenarios,” Pride said. These exercises are part of NATO troops training for brigade-size operations to prepare to respond to a global crisis. Exercises are conducted to improve interoperability and provide U.S. and NATO training while building relationships and effectiveness as part of Joint Multinational Training Command. “In terms of validating global response forces as not just a principal, but to validate capabilities to project anywhere in the world, seasoning the STOL is a critical objective for the exercise,” Pride said. “It has been quite a year, and a lot of units have come through. To see the C-130 land here today is quite an accomplishment.”

AF launches career path tool resources for Airmen
WASHINGTON — The Air Force recently launched an improved and re-branded Career Path Tool, called MyVector, which encourages mentorship between Airmen at all levels. The first step Airmen should take for success with MyVector is to volunteer to be mentors and share their experience and expertise with other Airmen. “Mentoring and networking are two of the most important things for leaders to embrace,” said Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James. “Mentoring represents an investment, one where we may not know the impact until many years later.” The reconfigured online platform supporting mentoring has a modern look and feel. These new configurations support not only the traditional by-name request method for requesting a mentor, but they also provide a mentor-matching capability based on weighted characteristics identified by the Airman searching for a mentor.
MyVector has a real-time mentoring plan, discussion forums, a bullet tracker to document accomplishments and the ability to dialogue online with your mentor. A resource page is also available to assist both parties with mentoring questions and relationships. “Air Force mentoring fosters a culture of inclusion for all Airmen while maximizing their strengths and is aligned with the culture of the Air Force for mission accomplishment,” said Dr. Patricia McGill, doctrine, institutional competencies and mentoring chief. “MyVector captures Airmen experiences within and across Air Force specialty codes and occupational series. Mentors will be able to provide feedback on their mentees’ career progression.” Mentorship requires time, effort and dedication. To assist with this process, there is a “Mentoring Checklist” located in Air Force Manual 36-2643, “Air Force Mentoring Program,” which outlines how to plan for the different mentoring sessions. “No matter your age, it’s important to help each other,” James said. “Seek a mentor and be a mentor.”
Today: Sauce Bolognese What do we need? • 150 grams ground meat (pork and beef) per person • Sunflower and olive oil • Tomato paste • Sliced tomatoes in a jar or a can (you can get it on the economy) • A bit of red wine • Onions, garlic, salt, ground white pepper, a bit of sugar, a bit of chili and oregano
Preparation:
Add spices to the ground meat (except the oregano). Mix it properly and let it rest for about half an hour. Dice the onions and the garlic to small pieces. Take a pot with a large diameter to have enough surface to roast the ground meat properly. Heat the pot. Add sunflower and olive oil (half and half) into the pot. Don’t be afraid to add a lot of oil into the pot. Add the ground meat and let it roast on medium heat for half an hour. Stir well. Then add

the small diced onions. Let them roast for about 10 minutes. Then add the small diced garlic. Be careful not to burn the garlic! Add the tomato paste. Let it roast for approximately five minutes. Be careful not to burn it. Then add a sip of red wine to it. Let it reduce. Add another sip of red wine. Add the sliced tomatoes and some water. Let it reduce. Add a little bit of water. Let it reduce. Add more water. Add the oregano (why do we add the oregano now? Because if we add it in the beginning of the roasting process, the oregano would burn, and we would have to throw the sauce away) and all the other spices. Then let it cook on low heat for 5 hours. Always take care to have enough water in the pot so that all meat is covered. When you now look into your pot you should have a nice red oil sea on top of your sauce. The red oil is what gives the nice red color to the noodles — and no, it’s not the sauce ;-) I am sure you will enjoy your sauce Bolognese!

Almost 44 years and 18 assignments later, Gen. Larry O. Spencer stood in front of friends, family and Airmen for the last time in his Air Force career. “God placed me in the Air Force and took me from airman basic to a four-star general, which must be classified as a miracle,” Spencer said. Spencer, a native of Washington, D.C., enlisted in the Air Force in 1971. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in industrial engineering technology from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, and became a distinguished graduate of Officer Training

Spencer Innovation Award, established on March 20 by Welsh. The award will annually recognize Airmen who come up with creative and efficient ways to save the Air Force money and time. The award represents Spencer’s devotion to Airmen throughout his career and his steadfast support of the “Every Dollar Counts” campaign. “During the next phase in
my life, I hope to attend more football games,” Spencer said. “It would be a nice retirement gift if my team did well this year. “People have asked me how I feel about being in Washington, D.C. for so long, and I can only sum that up with a quote from Martin Luther King Jr., and that is, ‘free at last, free at last, thank God almighty I’m free at last,’” Spencer said. The ceremony concluded with a long line of people waiting to say their goodbyes and to thank Spencer for his service.

Healthy grilling by Giovanna ReyesAlexander Public Health Command Region-Europe The smell of barbecue continues to linger through the air during the summer months. Before you fire up the grill this year, consider what options you might have to make it a healthy, as well as satisfying fun experience. According to the dietary guidelines for Americans 2010, a healthful diet should include fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat or fat-free dairy products. It should also contain lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs and nuts. The guidelines also suggest limiting saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt and added sugar. These should also be done in conjunction with ensuring that one does not exceed their recommended caloric intake. Healthy eating practices
should be included as part of our plan to stay ready and resilient. The Performance Triad recognizes that proper nutrition is an integral part of ensuring that our community enjoys a great quality of life. Having a healthy meal and a delicious meal are not mutually exclusive. Healthy cooking techniques such as grilling can capture the flavor of foods without adding extra calories. According to a Botsford registered dietician, the high heat from the grill preserves the foods moisture thereby keeping it tender. This eliminates the need to add oil or butter during cooking and makes you less reliant on sauces or other condiments to enhance flavor. To ensure that the meat is cooked thoroughly, baking meat covered in the oven before cooking on the grill may assure food is cooked to a safe temperature. This suggestion is, however, not necessary to achieve the specified inter-
nal temperature, especially for the seasoned griller or outdoor chef. These methods are great ways to reduce the fat content of meals without sacrificing taste or food safety. The high heat from grilling also causes excess fat on meats to drip off, thereby lowering the fat content of the meat itself. It is important to remember, however, that the addition of sour cream, butter, sauces and toppings add fat and calories to the meal and should be used sparingly or in moderation so it does not counteract the benefits of this cooking practice. Certain cuts and types of meat are also higher in fat than others. During the summer, the Centers for Disease Control recommends choosing leaner options such as skinless chicken or turkey, fish and lean pork. Using the chicken breast is also a lower-fat option than darker meats such as the thigh or leg. While the summer is

still here, try to cut back on the fats in some of the aforementioned ways if you choose to enjoy ribs, steaks, brats and hamburgers. When making condiments and sauces, utilize some of the great European options available. For example, make low-fat or non-fat yogurt dressings instead of mayonnaise-based sauces and dressings to cut calories. Healthy eating also encompasses eating a variety of foods from the different food groups. Fruit and vegetables can be prepared on the grill as well as being part of meals as a side dish. Shish kebabs are a fun way to incorporate fruits and vegetables on the
grill. When they are grilled, they tend to retain more of their vitamins and minerals. Buying fruits and vegetables that are in season also ensures that your friends and family are getting the freshest produce at better prices. Be creative and research ways to incorporate some of the local fruits and vegetables available in Germany that may not be familiar — they may be well worth the experiment. Variety is the spice of life, so enjoy the different foods that can be part of any summer celebrations. Remember to eat in moderation, and always practice safety when cooking outdoors on the grill.

According to the Barbecue Industry Association, 66 million Americans cook outdoors regularly, and a number of them are treated in emergency rooms for injuries related to charcoal, propane and wood-burning grills. Outdoor cooking injuries can be avoided by observing the following safety precautions.
Cooking with propane, LP, gas grills • Read the owner’s manual and operating instructions carefully. • Use the exact type of tank and fuel specified. • Check hoses and valve connections often by pouring soapy water on the connection points. If bubbles appear, retighten the connections and test again. • Transfer and store liquid propane cylinders in an upright position and never where temperatures can reach 125 degrees. • Whether using a grill lit by a match or pushbutton igniter, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Before cooking • Instruct children on the dangers of a lit grill. • Choose a safe grilling location away from children’s play areas and areas of heavy traffic. The area should be well ventilated to avoid danger from carbon monoxide and other combustion byproducts. • Never grill inside or even in a semi-enclosed area, such as a tent or camper. Always grill on a flat, stable platform. • Don’t wear clothing that could contact the fire
Cooking with charcoal grills • Never start a fire with gasoline. • If using an electric fire starter, use an insulated
indoor or outdoor cord plugged into an outlet protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter. • Be sure the ground is dry, and do not stand in water when plugging the starter into an outlet. • The starter will stay hot for several minutes after use, therefore place it out of the reach of children and on a surface that will not burn. • If using instant-light briquettes, spread instantlight briquettes into a single layer, making sure they touch at the edges. Light several of them at their edges with a match. • If using standard charcoal briquettes, stack standard briquettes in a pyramid to allow air to circulate around them, causing them to light faster. Apply lighter fluid before lighting, and wait at least one minute before lighting to allow the lighter fluid to soak in. Never add fluid to the coals once they’ve been lit. Home to a rich array of museums, a bustling fish market and intriguing historical landmarks, Hamburg attracts international visitors from far and wide. While enjoying a stay in the cosmopolitan city, be sure to find some time to visit the Tierpark und TropenAquarium Hagenbeck, Hagenback’s zoo and aquarium. Those with younger travelers in tow will especially appreciate the chance to interact with newborn animals ranging from penguins to lion cubs. A short U-bahn ride away from the center of town by taking the U-2 to the Hagenbeck’s Tierpark station, delivers one to the entrances of both the zoo and aquarium. Tropen-Aquarium Hagenbeck is worth a visit in itself. The indoor tropical landscape and aquarium begins with a visit to a large open room where a range of critters including Lori parakeets, ring-tailed lemurs, girdle lizards and chameleons scamper freely among the tropical plants. to chase a chameleon. Paths through the tropical maze take visitors past enclosures full of colorful frogs, deadly snakes and spiders, stalactite-clinging bats and more. Deep in the bowels of the facility, one can gaze up into large water tanks where sharks, stingrays, jellyfish and other underwater creatures swim. Feeding time is especially popular in the animal park — signs throughout the zoo area indicate when zoo personnel are scheduled to make their rounds. The zoo was founded by Carl Hagenbeck Jr. in 1907 from a collection of animals begun in 1863 by his father, Carl Hagenbeck Sr. The elder Hagenbeck, a Hamburg fishmonger, was also an exotic animal enthusiast. The zoo, like most of the city, was demolished in the bombing of Hamburg during World War II but was reconstructed after the war. Admission to the zoo and aquarium is €30 for adults or €21 for children ages 4 to 16. A family ticket for two adults and two children costs €85. Using public transportation in Germany Courtesy of the Herald Union Archive U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Traveling around Germany on public transportation can be a bit overwhelming at first, but with a little practice you can become comfortable with the system. The German transportation system offers coordinated public transportation travel throughout Germany. One ticket allows you to use any method of local transport in the area covered by the association, from regional express trains and underground trains to streetcars and buses, regardless of which method of travel you use to reach your destination. Riding the bus or streetcar For shorter trips, a simple one-stage bus ride should get you where you need to go. If you want to ride a bus or a streetcar you will have to wait at the “Haltestelle,” stopping place or bus stop. A sign with a big ‘H’ indicates a bus or streetcar stop. A schedule will be posted at the stop showing what routes stop there, on what days and how often they run. Bus, streetcar and train schedules will have two different schedules: one for work days and a separate schedule for weekends and German holidays. When the bus or streetcar arrives, you may enter at the front, middle or rear of the bus. If you need to buy a ticket, enter at the front and buy one from the driver. If the door closest to you does not open automatically, press the button located next to the door, and it will open for you.

Getting off the bus can be a bit tricky. Make sure you know where you need to get off, and start moving toward the door before the bus comes to a stop. If no one has already done so, press the “Wagen Haelt,” or bus stop button, so the bus driver will know someone needs to get off at the upcoming stop. When the bus finally stops, if the door does not open automatically, then you need to press the button near the door for it to open. To get back to your starting place, normally you can catch a return bus on the opposite side of the street. If your stopping point is a oneway street, you will need to search around for a stop on the same bus or streetcar line that heads back to your starting point. Longer trips may require a combination of bus, streetcar or train.

Buying a ticket You need a valid ticket to use train services. You can buy your ticket from the ticket counters at the train station or at one of the ticket machines. The machines are equipped with user screens to guide you through the process. With the simple press of a button, you can select a different language for the ticket machine user guide: English, French, Italian, Spanish and Turkish.

Taking the train Train schedules are prominently posted throughout train stations. You will find two schedules: “Ankunft,” for arrivals, and “Abfahrt”, for departures. Departures are listed on yellow charts; arrivals are listed on white. All trains arriving or departing from that station are listed chronologically starting at midnight. Times are listed using the 24-hour clock. Symbols indicate the services onboard as well as which days that train operates. The “Gleis,” track and train number and the arrival or departure platform number, are also listed. In major stations, there will also be large automated display boards showing the trains
The ticket machines are equipped with a user display and 10-digit keypad to guide you through your purchase. Simply follow the instructions on the user screen. Select your destination from the directory. Use the 10-digit keypad to enter the two or four digit destination number listed to the left of the destination. Then press the button in the key block under the keypad for the appropriate ticket, adult or child. Check the destination number and selected ticket details on the screen, and pay the amount displayed. Take your ticket and any change from the tray. The machines will also accept payment in banknotes, specifically €5, €10, €20 and €50. The screen will display the banknotes accepted depending on the fare amount and the change available.

Wine carnival The wine growing community of Deidesheim is celebrating its annual wine carnival today through Monday. Regional vintners will serve wines in their yards and at various stands. Music and artistic performances will take place at the historical Marktplatz. Vendors will put up 30 stands on Bahnhofstrasse to offer food specialties and other merchandise. An amusement park will feature a giant Ferris wheel and other rides. The Deidesheim wine carnival was awarded the nicest wine fest of the Palatinate. Car-free event day in Appelbachtal The road from Würzweiler, northeast of Rockenhausen, to Pfaffen-Schwabenheim, Bad Kreuznach county, in the valley called Appelbachtal will close to motorized traffic Sunday for a car-free family day. Bikers, hikers and skaters can enjoy the 30 km car-free route from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Restaurants, associations and institutions in the villages along that road will offer culinary specialties, regional wines, live music and displays. Legal advice: German traffic violations Courtesy of U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Legal Office If you or your dependant receives a traffic violation (i.e. speeding, running a red light, etc.) from the German authorities you will receive an administrative order. The notice either comes through the mail, or will be served by your commander, immediate supervisor or the International Law branch of the legal office. Once you received the administrative order or questionnaire, you only have a two-week deadline from the date of receipt, not from the date of postmark, to respond. The administrative order is an offer made by the German authorities which provides you an opportunity to pay a fine for having violated German law instead of appearing in court.
An administrative order is not proof of guilt, and no judgment of guilt or innocence has been rendered. German law gives you the right to object to the violation notice. If you decide to protest the administrative order, you may do so in writing or by personally going to the issuing authority. A written protest must make reference to the case file number and should state in detail the grounds for objection to the administrative order. The protest has to be written in German. You have to file the objection within two weeks from the date the administrative order is served on you. The fact that the payment or protest, objection, is in the mail at the end of the stated period is not sufficient. The payment or the protest must be received by the German authorities within the stated period. If you do not object, the order becomes final.
You should make a careful determination in contesting the administrative order because your total costs may substantially increase if later court proceedings result in a judgment against you. If you are involved in an automobile accident, there may be a claim for injury or damage against your insurance company. Therefore, you should immediately inform your insurance company about the accident. Your insurance company might need a German police report or a military police report. If you receive a German notice related to the accident, you should immediately report it to your insurance company. Notifying the insurance company of the receipt of such a German document neither affects your rights, nor your obligations, under German law. Don’t trash your integrity: properly dealing with trash by 2nd Lt. Michael Peterson 786th Civil Engineer Squadron Disposing of trash improperly is a question of personal integrity, especially when you are aware that offbase residents are not authorized to bring their personal property refuse onto any installation for disposal in facility dumpsters, recycle centers, or in military family housing underground dumpsters. As military members, we uphold integrity to the highest level, but why ruin it with a small thing such as bringing trash on base and dumping it illegally? There is no need for an integrity check. Just do what is right, even when no one is looking. Off-base residents automatically pay a refuse and recycling fee as part of their housing costs and must utilize these local community collection services versus sneaking additional tonnage onto installations and increasing refuse and recycling costs unnecessarily. Recycling is the law in Germany, and proper disposal of personal property is the responsibility of each resident using the collection services appropriate to their community. For those living in on-base MFH units, residents are responsible for
keeping living areas clean and safe. This includes adhering to the rules of disposing refuse and recycling materials. You may be charged removal and clean-up fees and have your privilege to live in base housing terminated if you abandon property inside or outside of your quarters. Oversized items and hazardous waste materials are your responsibility to dispose of at the nearest recycling center. Below are some general rules of engagement for properly dealing with trash: • No off-base refuse or recyclables should come onto installations and be placed into any dumpster, underground container or base recycle centers. (Exception: up to 60 days after arrival and when out-processing; requires PCS orders). • Place trash inside dumpsters or underground containers, not on the ground by the containers since trash left outside the containers will not be collected. • Bulk trash items such as furniture, grills, mattresses, etc., should only be placed on the sidewalk near the underground dumpsters on the Sunday night after 6 p.m. prior to the scheduled pick-up date. From October to April, pick-up is on the second and the last Monday of every month. From
May to September, pick-up is every Monday. Bulk trash day is not a permit to leave anything and everything beside the dumpsters. Household trash bags, cardboard boxes and recycling should all still be discarded appropriately. • Do not place bulk trash on top of underground containers, but on sidewalks near the containers. • Tires are restricted as “special” waste because they cause damage to the environment. Turn in your tires to the vendor, KMC recycling centers, or the Ramstein auto salvage yard. • Waste oil can soak into the ground and enter the ground water in local ditches, streams, lakes and even our drinking water supply. A single drop of oil contaminates 1 million drops of water. Turn your waste oil in to the KMC recycling centers or the MWR Auto Skills facilities. • Cameras and manned patrols are being established to prevent illegal dumping. • Personnel guilty of improper and illegal dumping will be charged for the full cost of removal and cleanup. Help is always available. If you have questions, reach out to your German landlords or neighbors for more information on how to dispose your trash properly. Also, the
Ramstein and Vogelweh Housing Office has brochures about recycling in Germany. Respect the host nation by learning their garbage and recyclable collection system. and departure time of the next train. If you arrive early, the sign may be showing a train that comes before yours. When the train arrives at the platform, you will notice that each car has a sign on or near each door showing the train and car numbers, origin, destination and major stops along the way. Make sure you are at the platform before your train’s scheduled departure time. German trains are generally punctual. Connections are well-timed, so it is essential that the trains run on time. If you’re even a minute late, you might miss your train. The doors will close automatically when the train is ready to leave. On board the train Once the train has been underway for some time, the conductor will come through and ask for tickets. If you just boarded, present your ticket and passport if proof of age or residency is required as part of your ticket. The conductor will punch or stamp your ticket and return it to you. You will not need to show it again for the duration of your trip unless there is a change of conductors. Some lower-end trains no longer have conductors. Passengers on these trains are on the honor system. You must purchase all tickets
and reservations before you board these trains. Periodic spot checks are made and hefty fines are levied against those without valid tickets. Stops are announced shortly before arrival. If you miss the announcement, signs on the platforms will tell you where you are. If your train has them, the electronic displays at the ends of the coaches will show the name of the upcoming stop as you approach it. At some stations the train only stops for a minute or two, so if you’re not ready, you may end up taking an unscheduled diversion to the next stop. Once you get off the train, follow the “Ausgang,” or exit, signs to leave the station. Most stations have multiple exits, so double-check to make sure you’re headed in the right direction. If you are making connections, check the yellow departure schedules to find out which track your connecting train leaves from, then follow the signs directing you to that platform. Connection information is also usually announced on-board the trains as they approach major stations. Armed with everything you need to know to get around with Germany’s public transportation, you should be ready to visit castles, Christmas markets and countless other tourist places. The Ramstein Dental Clinic will sponsor a mouthguard clinic 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 22 during the 86th Medical Group Sports Physical Day. Services offered will include custom mouthguards for adolescents and boil-and-bite mouthguards for children. This mouthguard clinic is open to active duty and retired ID cardholders. Fitness center improvements
Over the last two months, a new system and its associated hardware were installed to enable 24/7 access to Vogelweh Fitness Center. Another major project to ensure the safety of customers is a four-month fire detection installation project which began in July. Though the scope of the project is large, the facility will stay open. The VFC has partnered with the 86th Civil Engineer Squadron to design a phased approach to the project, allowing to keep half of the gym floor open. Despite the decrease in space, they will reposition equipment along the gym floor so customers will still be able to complete their workout. Portions of the project require closing the locker rooms, therefore, customers will have to find

an alternate shower plan such as their home, dorm or lodging. Additionally, new resistance and cardio equipment is on order for all three fitness centers run by the 786th Force Support Squadron. The northside and southside fitness centers on Ramstein will see new equipment including resistance/pulley training equipment installed in the parent-child rooms. Remembrance 5K Run/Walk
The Rheinland-Pfalz Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation is hosting a Remembrance 5K Run/Walk at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 12, dedicated to the brave men and women who gave their lives for their country. Registration for the run will be held from 8 to 9:15 a.m. at the Rhine Ordnance Barracks Special Events Center, Bldg. 237. T-shirts will be given to the first 150 paid participants. The Enchanting Eltville Electoral Castle
Story and photos by Gemma Located on the Rhine River in the Rheingau wine region is the enchanting Eltville Electoral Castle (known in German as Kurfürstliche Burg). This 14th century castle is surrounded by vineyards, timbered framed houses, rose gardens and slow moving boats going up and down the river. Looking like it’s right out of a fairy tale, Eltville Electoral Castle is truly a delight for all your senses!
History
Receiving its’ town status in 1332, Eltville is the oldest town in the Rheingau region. The castle was built in 1330 by Balduin von Trier and completed in 1350 by Heinrich von Virneburg. The name of the castle comes from 14th and 15th century when the archbishops and electors of Mainz lived there. During the Holy Roman Empire, the princes who had the right to elect the German kings were called ‘Electors’. In 1635 the entire castle (except for the tower) was destroyed by Swedish
troops. The tower that I walked up has a Gutenberg memorial, which pays tribute to the famous inventor of movable type for the printing press and letterpress printing. The famous inventor was officially honored here in 1465. Still today visitors of this breathtaking castle can learn firsthand about Gutenberg’s accomplishments.
Visiting the Castle
Being that it is one of the most beautiful castles I have visited in Europe, I truly enjoyed my day walking about the castle grounds. You arrive first in the courtyard, in which your eyes will draw to the picturesque well in the center. My daughter asked for a penny and made a wish! The courtyard was inviting, especially the cool temperature even though it was over 100 degrees outside. Then I walked into the Gift Shop and Tourist-Information, which is at the base of the tower. The room of the gift shop used to be the recreation room for the castle servants. The shop offers a very nice selection of souvenirs, books, prints, gifts, wine samples
and more. Here is where you buy your 3 euro ticket to walk up the castle tower. Here you will find a winding stone staircase and the several rooms with displays. I really appreciated these rooms, especially since I could catch my breath. The 360 lookout room on top was a remarkable experience with a fantastic view. On one side you see the beautiful vineyard hills and the other a view of the Rhein River. The old lookout posts were where the men would stand and shoot their arrows through thin (still in tact) windows at invaders. I liked to look out and try to feel how they would feel looking at the very same scenery but many many years ago.
Outer Courtyard and Rose Garden
After leaving the tower, I headed to the rose garden on the well-preserved wooden covered bridge, which seemed frozen in time. Then the garden was so gorgeous that pictures hardly could do it justice. The sea of roses with an intoxicating smell made me feel like I
stumbled upon an area in ‘The Secret Garden,’ my favorite childhood book. Would you Like Your Very Own Castle for a Day? I was so surprised to learn that you can rent the castle for any private events such as weddings and family celebrations. Available to rent are different halls and the rose garden. This sounds like making a fairy tale party come true!

Eltville Electoral Castle is located 20 minutes southwest of Wiesbaden, 1 hour and 10 minutes northeast of Kaiserslautern and 2 hours and 30 minutes north of Stuttgart.
