Static closeout dates and elimination of CRO report phase-out begins with technical sergeants WASHINGTON (AFNS) — The chief of staff and chief master sergeant of the Air Force announced in July a series of changes to the enlisted evaluation and promotion system which will focus on ensuring job performance is the most important factor when evaluating and identifying Airmen for promotion.

Announced changes will be implemented in stages over the next 18 months for the active duty Air Force and over the next 30 months for the Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard, or ARC. The first set of changes include static closeout date for technical sergeants and elimination of change of reporting official enlisted performance reports.

The change supports planned implementation of static, or fixed, annual closeout dates for each rank tied to regular Air Force promotion eligibility cut-off dates. Once implemented, static closeout dates will enable implementation of the forced distribution and stratification policies, Air Force senior leaders announced last week. Allowing closeout of all reports for a particular grade at the same time helps raters ensure an equal playing field and supports the ultimate goal of having better performance-based evaluations.

The new technical sergeant SCOD will be Nov. 30. Implementation details will be included in interim changes to the Air Force instructions governing evaluation and promotion. Information will also be posted on the myPers website and released in public news articles to ensure Airmen are informed.

Teamwork: It’s all about you

Every speech I’ve heard regarding “teamwork” usually includes the phrase “there’s no ‘I’ in team” or something to that effect. Its true there is no “I” in team; however, teamwork starts with you. The mission can’t get accomplished if you don’t complete your training. Your team can’t succeed unless you are dedicated to the goal. It takes YOU to make a team succeed. To be a successful team player, you need to focus on and adopt the unit’s mission. You have to understand each teammate’s role in the mission. The Air Force is not a single team effort; therefore, you must learn how to cooperate and work with other teams.

As the Director of Operations for the 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, it’s my job to ensure our teams are prepared and ready to go at a moment’s notice to save lives. An AE crew is constructed of flight nurses and medical technicians. Each member has a very individualized role during a mission. If any of them fail in their personal roles, it affects the entire mission. It’s vital to understand each member’s role in the mission. This allows you to rely on each other’s strengths and to support each other’s weaknesses. If you don’t do your training, if you don’t pay attention to the details, if you don’t do your part for the team, then the team will fail.

Football teams are a great example of this.

If the center doesn’t make a clean snap to the quarterback, the play fails. If the linemen don’t make their blocks, the play fails, if the quarterback doesn’t make a good throw, the play fails.

Gines, 86th Medical Squadron acute care nurse practitioner. “We had a team of people come up with this arrangement. We literally practiced with Lego pieces to visually develop the complicated special limitations.”

Every inch of the C-130 was configured with the same amount of medical supplies that would normally be used on a C-17.

Evacuation Squadron along with two teams from the 86th Medical Squadron worked together through low-light conditions and turbulence to complete the set up in approximately three hours.

“We set up two surgery tables with patient-monitoring equipment and several other litters,” said Master Sgt. Jose Ariaspatino, 86th MDS Surgical Services flight chief. “We also set up several side-wall litters designed to

get our bags off the ground and easily accessible.”

Airmen from Ramstein had all the equipment necessary to perform surgery on the aircraft if needed.

“It’s not every day that you get to see something like that happen,” said Senior Airman Christian McDevitt, 37th Airlift Squadron loadmaster. “It is remarkable that we have the capability to do such things.”

Guard your mouth to protect your grill

Staff Sgt. Jackie D. Holcomb III 86th Dental Squadron A recent issue in the Journal of the American Dental Association reported 13 to 39 percent of all dental injuries are sports related, and more than five million teeth are knocked out each year. Many of these injuries could have been prevented.

The 86th Dental Squadron preventive dentistry team will be at the 86th Medical Group Sports Physical Day on Saturday to help avoid such injuries.

An essential step to preventing oral injuries is the proper use of athletic mouth guards. Several types of mouth guards are available and choosing the best one for you is vital to maintaining a healthy smile.

The most popular among athletes is the “custom” mouth guard. This requires a dental visit to accomplish molds of your teeth so that a one-of-a-kind, perfect-fit mouth guard can be fabricated.

The more common alternative is a “boil and bite” STATIC, from Page 1

RegAF technical sergeants will also be the first Airmen to experience the elimination of change of reporting official evaluations. Effective Aug. 15, CRO enlisted performance reports will no longer be accomplished for RegAF technical sergeants. AFPC will provide details on how to handle the various situations associated with this policy change.

ARC chief master sergeants will be the first reserve component Airmen to experience the change when they begin using the new chief’s

mouth guard, made from thermoplastic materials.

The “boil and bite” mouth guard, as the name indicates, is placed in hot water to soften then immediately bitten to impress and preserve a mold of the teeth. It will not contour and conform to every tooth structure; however, one can still achieve a safe and effective fit.

Another oral protective device is the “stock” mouth guard. A “stock” mouth guard is similar to the “boil and bite” mouth guard in that it is pre-fabricated.

Unlike the “boil and bite,” little can be done to adjust the fit which minimizes the protection it provides.

Regardless of the sport or activity being performed, thought should be given to whether or not an oral safety device is needed, because participating in your favorite sport can be fun and rewarding, but protecting your teeth from sports-related injuries can be an even bigger reward.

From July 28 through Aug. 5, 35 service members and civilians attended the Protocol Fundamental Course here to learn specific details about the role they play in many different events.

Professionalism, flightline etiquette, flag etiquette, event logistics, ceremonies, gifts, distinguished visitors, fine dining etiquette, precedence and financials are just a few of the topics that were discussed during the course.

The Protocol Fundamental Course prepared protocol members for tasks they may be a part of in the future, as well as better their skills to enable them to do their jobs to the best of their abilities.

“A lot of times people are thrown into the protocol world without training, and they can make or break a situation,” said 1st Lt. Amara Adams, 39th Air Base Wing chief of protocol at Incirlik Air Base, Turkey. “For me, the purpose of this course was to help me become the subject-matter expert on courtesies and ceremonial requirements so that I can translate this to my wing commander and he can effectively develop those vital international relationships.

“This course has helped me understand my role, grow my knowledge base and primed my confidence for executing my requirements,” she continued. “I am taking back knowledge on specific items we have done incorrectly for some of our ceremonies, and I am more prepared for our distinguished visitors.”

For some, it was a refresher; for others, it was a learning experience.

“The course helped tremendously even though I am not currently working protocol for my unit,” said Marine Corps. Master Sgt. Thomas Kay, Special Operations Command Africa executive assistant to the command sergeant major. “I learned a lot from this course.

Top 6 things to check out on your LES

by Senior Airman Holly Mansfield 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs When looking at a leave and earnings statement, it probably looks like a page with a bunch of boxes and 78 different things that don’t make sense.

However, understanding an LES is important because it lists your military pay, allowances and earned leave.

This single page establishes how much money someone receives during a month. Changes made by the owner or as a result of deployment or training, negligent debt or change in laws are all shown on the LES. “Nobody works for free,” said Tech. Sgt. Chad Spivey, 86th Comptroller Squadron military pay NCOIC. “Reviewing your LES will save you time, stress and financial hardship. It is your pay and you should want to know how to check it.”

With that in mind, here are a few things you might want to pay attention to on your LES: 1. (Box 10) Entitlements In this box you’ll find the base pay for any Airman at your pay grade. You can also see any allowances you may receive like, cost of living, housing and food.

2. (Box 11) Deductions Here you can find any deductions taken from your pay. Deductions may be any taxes, social security or life insurance. You can also see your mid-month-pay.

3. (Box 12) Allotments This box lists deductions, including voluntary or required payments, that are made to individuals, institutions or agencies. These deductions may include money going to savings or checking accounts, insurance or bonds.

4. (Box 19) End of month pay This box has the actual amount of money received at the end of the month.

5. (Box 28) Leave This shows the current leave balance available based on the leave you have earned minus the amount you have used. In Box 32, any leave lost by not using it is listed. If you are planning on taking leave or interested in how many days you have earned then you can look at box 28.

POV shipment issues to be addressed

Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command

SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (AFNS) — Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command and U.S. Transportation Command are using transportation experts this week to address the challenges and concerns military customers are facing when shipping their privately owned vehicles.

On May 1, International Auto Logistics, known as IAL, assumed responsibility for the Global Privately Owned Vehicle Contract, also known as GPCIII. Under the terms of the contract, IAL is responsible for processing, transporting and storing vehicles owned by military personnel and Department of Defense civilian employees bound for, or returning from, overseas duty assignments.

Military personnel and DoD civilian employees who are experiencing delays with their vehicle arrival time should call IAL at 1-855-389-9499 and choose Option 2, or visit IAL’s website at http:// www.pcsmypov.com.

Stanley said authorized members be reimbursed for rental car fees incurred if their vehicle’s original required delivery date is missed.

While the first seven days of rental car fees are

handled by the member’s local military or government claims office, he added, rental car fees incurred after the initial seven-day period will be reimbursed by IAL via an “inconvenience claim.”

For military claims, eligible personnel may rent a car at government expense for up to seven days if their privately owned vehicle transported at government expense for their use does not arrive at the authorized destination by the required delivery date. Reimbursement is limited by law to $30 per day, with a maximum reimbursement of $210.

Stanley said that authority expires on the date their POV is available for pick-up at destination.

“IAL will review each claim on a case-by-case basis and, based on the circumstances, reimburse the member accordingly,” he said.

According to the IAL website, there are three options for filing a claim, including “Site Settlement,” “IAL Claims,” and “Inconvenience Claims,” with each option offering a different level of service and convenience. For more details on each option, visit the website’s FAQ section.

Stanley said that in an effort to further reduce the customer’s financial burden, if a customer is inconvenienced because of a missed delivery date and cannot pay for a rental car, IAL has coordinated with Avis and Budget for direct billing from

those rental car companies to IAL. SDDC officials acknowledge the transfer to the new POV contractor did not go as smoothly as it could have. The SDDC is aware of and understands the issues some of them have experienced while shipping their POV, adding that solving those issues is the command’s No. 1 priority.

“We are well aware that our customers continue to experience challenges in shipping their vehicles,” said Navy Capt. Aaron Stanley, personal property director for SDDC. The TRANSCOM contracting office and the SDDC program management office continue to provide program oversight, while daily performance is monitored by contracting officer’s representatives assigned to vehicle processing centers.

Stanley said about three dozen of the contracting officer’s representatives are globally dispersed to provide daily oversight of IAL operations. “According to the [representatives], IAL is responding to their feedback and has begun to make improvements,” he added. “That said, we believe that one unhappy customer is one too many. We want to assure our military and civilian partners and their families that SDDC, U.S. TRANSCOM and IAL are actively taking steps to improve the POV shipping process for them.

For Soldiers leaving the Army and transitioning into civilian life, the unknown future can be stressful – even scary. Fortunately, there’s light at the end of the tunnel and leaving a life in uniform is not only the end of one phase in life but the beginning of an exciting new chapter.

Without proper preparation, a Soldier can find himself lost and may struggle finding adequate employment or pursuing an education after the service. But with adequate planning and support, the transition can be a smooth one.

Floyd Lewis, the Soldier for Life transition service manager for the Kaiserslautern, Baumholder and Wiesbaden communities, said Soldiers must prepare early for their transition, ideally by taking advantage of the many resources available to them through the Soldier for Life program.

“Eventually, every Soldier will transition out of the military,” he said.

“The direct intent of the Soldier for Life transition program is to ensure that Soldiers receive the transition assistance support they need to help facilitate them in accomplishing their individual transition plan.”

Command Sgt. Maj. Rodney J. Rhoades, the senior enlisted advisor of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, emphasized the importance of qualities developed in the military as well as civilian education.

“The military builds discipline, attention to detail, leadership and many relevant technical skills,” he said. “A Soldier who has served his country proudly has not only earned benefits that will help long after his service, but developed habits that create success. Spouses are encouraged to participate in transition activities.

Not all transitioning Soldiers are doing so voluntarily. Most separating involuntarily were selected through the enlisted qualitative service program, which encompasses three programs – the qualitative management program, over-strength qualitative service program and promotion stagnation qualitative service program.

Soldiers selected for separation through QMP are typically denied due to unfavorable information in their records or failure to meet Army performance standards. But not all Soldiers involuntarily separated fall under QMP provisions. Soldiers selected for involuntarily separation due to an OS-QSP or PS-QSP board generally belong to over-strength career fields.

Rhoades noted the QSP affects not only junior but senior NCOs. NCOs ranging from staff sergeants to command sergeants major have been impacted.

“Structurally, the military is chang-

Kaiserslautern American ing,” he said. “The cost of training, equipping and maintaining our force has almost doubled since 2003, and we simply can’t retain as many Soldiers.”

While negative discriminators can make a Soldier an “easier” QSP selection, “it may just come down to numbers. If a career field is over-strength, the Army may simply have more outstanding NCOs than it needs – boards are just trying to select the very best among highly qualified NCOs to retain.”

Rhoades also urged NCOs to keep force reduction measures in perspective.

“Overall, QSP and QMP will only impact a very small percentage of our NCO corps,” he said. “My recommendation to all NCOs, and I can’t say this enough, is to stay focused on your two basic responsibilities – accomplishment of your mission and the welfare of your Soldiers. Give 100 percent each and every day to your command, your team and your Soldiers, civilians and their families.”

Lewis added that despite natural disappointment inherent in selection for involuntary separation, transitioning Soldiers have the skills and knowledge necessary for very successful futures regardless of the reason they’re leaving the Army.

With the drawdown well underway, Soldiers confident of retention five years ago now face an unknown future.

In order to maximize retention chances, Soldiers must distinguish themselves from peers.

“Soldiers need to do their very best in everything they do in order to remain competitive,” said Rhoades.

“They need to excel and not sit back and wait because those who sit back and wait will find that opportunities won’t be there for them.”

Rhoades added that Soldiers can get an edge on their peers by seeking out broadening assignments and tough leadership positions.

They should also get involved in their installations and communities as well as special organizations such as the U.S. Army Europe Sergeant Morales Club.

“In our community, it’s often Morales professionals who take initiative and distinguish themselves with their leadership, mentorship and outreach,” he said.

“They do great work, not only as some of our best leaders and mentors for their fellow Soldiers but as volunteers who engage with the broader community. When it comes down to a QSP board, some-

thing like that can really make a Soldier stand out above the rest.”

Above all, Rhoades said, Soldiers should be proud of their service, whether it lasted three or 30 years.

“Very few individuals wear the cloth of the nation,” he said. “Many will never have the experience of service or understand the brotherhood that we have as Soldiers, and for those who have, it’s a remarkable experience. Hopefully it was a very positive experience – one of brotherhood, one of trust and one of commitment that will carry forward to the next chapter of a Soldier’s life and have a positive impact, not only for the individual but the family, the community and the nation.”

It’s a day to spread awareness of the struggles of being lefthanded, and also encourages

right-handed people to try doing daily tasks with their left hand.

People who are predominately left-handed live in a right-handed world. It may not be prevalent to some how much of a struggle it can be, and even some lefties forget because of adaptation over time. There are simple tools

the average person may use on a daily basis. A computer mouse, for example, is usually used with the right hand.

Some predominately lefthander’s have either adapted to using right-handed appliances with their left hand or grow accustom to using their right hand altogether.

For left-handed military members, there are additional adjustments to be made aside from the daily struggles. They can naturally become used to these things and may not even realize they’re conforming.

“A lot of the weapons are designed for right-handed people,” Weller said. “A lefthanded person can have their weapon modified to accommodate, but a lot of people have had to adjust to doing things right-handed. Our uniforms have a pen pocket on the left sleeve to make it easier for right-handed people to grab their pens.”

There are many resources online that allow lefties to share their experiences going through school. Even surveys are used to further help left-handed children get the assistance needed in dif-

ferent phases of their education, whether learning how to write, or not being seated on the right of a right-handed person as to eliminate the chances of bumping elbows.

“Growing up, all the desks and scissors were built for right-handed people,” Weller said. “Writing and drawing was especially hard because I couldn’t keep the ridge of my left hand off the paper, so all my work came out smudgy.

Lefties learn to conform to certain tasks that were made for right-handed people.

“A lot of teachers didn’t know how to teach someone who is left-handed how to write,” Weller continued.

“They struggled to figure that out. I see that now because my kids are left-handed and my wife struggles to show them how to do things with pencils and pens. My daughter complains about the can opener being made for people who are right-handed.”

Being left-handed does not only have minor inconveniences. Studies have shown your dominant hand can have an effect on health. According to child and adolescent psychiatry at the Yale Child Study Center, “40 percent of those with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder are left-handed.”

“In the mental-health world, we like to say that only left-handed people are in their right mind because lefthanded people use the right side of their brain,” Weller joked. “Also, there’s an increase prevalence of mental illness among left-handed people. It’s hard to say why, but many tests show a greater number of mental illnesses in those who are left-handed as opposed to right-handed.”

Many forefathers are lefthanded to include Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush and even the current Commander in Chief, President Barack Obama.

It just goes to show that no matter the preferred hand, the common denominator amongst them all is the mission. Despite the minor obstacles some may face, they continue to be capable of excellence in all they do.

Hello Ramstein! I have to say, I’ve traveled to a lot of countries in the Air Force, but none of them offer the variety, culture and beauty that Germany has to offer. My latest trip here was to a location that was so beautiful, Walt Disney decided to model the castles from his movies after it; and that’s Neuschwanstein Castle.

When my human told me we were going to see the Disney Castle, I was excited, but when I finally saw it on the way there, I nearly hopped out the car window.

This gorgeous castle stands on the side of a mountain and can be seen for many miles from the actual location. Once we got there, the town was packed with people trying to make their way up to the castle. There were several options, from hiking, biking or taking a bus.

We opted to take the bus because

my little legs can only handle so much climbing and we wanted to save that for once we got up there.

After we got dropped off at the top, there were even more options.

We could go up and see the castle from afar on top of a bridge or go down and walk right up to the castle itself. We decided both. The bridge was amazing. The scene was like something out of a movie. I wish I could have spent more time on there, but the place was packed worse than 20 pounds of dog biscuits in a 10-pound box, so we made our way down to the castle. Unfortunately, the castle was so crowded that we couldn’t get tickets to go inside, so we just walked around the perimeter.

Seeing the place up-close left this puppy extremely happy. I’d give the trip two paws up!

Recipe of the week: Donau Wave Cake Servings: 24 Ingredients: DOUGH: 250 grams butter or margarine, softened 350 grams flour 6 medium eggs, separated 200 grams sugar 1 package Vanillin-Zucker (vanilla sugar) 1/2 package Backpulver (baking powder) 2 jars sour cherries 2 tablespoons cocoa, unsweetened BUTTER CREAM: 3/4 liter milk 250 grams butter, room temperature 3 tablespoons sugar 2 packages Vanille Pudding Pulver, unsweetened, (Pudding Mix) 200 grams Schokolade Kuvertüre (cooking chocolate) Instructions: Heat oven to 200 C. /390 F. Grease a 35 X 42 cm. (approx. 13 x 16 inch) jelly roll pan.

DOUGH: Separate the eggs. Beat the butter until creamy and alternately add in the sugar, Vanillin-Zucker (vanilla sugar) and egg yolks. Sift together the flour and Backpulver (baking powder) and gradually mix into the butter mixture. Beat egg whites until

stiff. Fold in the egg whites. Remove 1/3 of the dough and stir the cocoa in to the 1/3 portion. Spread the light dough into the jelly roll pan. Spread the dark dough over the light dough.

Make waves in the dough with a fork or spoon. Drain the cherries and then divide over the dough. Bake for about 30 minutes. Let cool.

PUDDING AND BUTTER CREAM: Mix 100 ml. of the milk with the pudding powder and the 3 tbl. of sugar.

Gently boil the rest of the milk and stir in the pudding mix. Let cool for a few minutes. Remove the skin. Mix in the butter a little bit at a time. (The butter should be the same temperature as the pudding before stirring together.) Spread pudding cream over the cooled cake. Melt Kuvertüre in a hot water bath, being careful not to get any water into your chocolate.

Drizzle melted Kuvertüre over the pudding cream. The cake top can either be left with the drizzled chocolate or spread over the cake.

You can decorate this cake further with shaved chocolate.

NOTE: To soften the Schokolade Kuvertüre (cooking chocolate) just a little, you can warm up about 100 ml. of Schlagsahne (heavy whipping cream) and melt the chocolate into that. Or you can mix the chocolate in with a cube of Palmin, which is similar to Crisco.

There are probably as many reasons as there are people why a person decides to join the military, and likely even more reasons why those same people choose the career path they do.

For some members of the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, many of the special agents have similar goals and reasons in mind when making the decision to apply.

“I wanted to [see] results for the actions I took on a more regular basis as opposed to other Air Force specialty codes... Sometimes you don’t really get to see the impact of what you are doing on a daily basis,” said Special Agent Christopher Ouellette, 13th Field Investigation Squadron commander. “In AFOSI, we are able to go out and touch people’s lives and have a huge impact to the wing commander and to the entire base population.”

AFOSI agents have a unique chance to influence their community and the Air Force in many ways. The special agents in the 13th FIS do this in one of three departments.

In the major crimes division, special agents handle cases that may involve death, rape or child abuse among other things. One case the 13th FIS handled, led to the capture of a child molester who received a 50-year prison sentence.

“For me, the biggest thing is the law enforcement,” said Special Agent Renato De Jesus, 13th FIS. “I want to make sure that criminals get prosecuted.

I want to protect Air Force assets and personnel.”

Agents work incidents such as attempts at fraud in the Economic Crimes division. One case happened during the construction of the Kaiserslautern

Military Community Center.

“We ran several fraud investigations, which were briefed in front of Congress, which talked about product substitution,” Ouellette said. “You had some German contractors who were colluding with Air Force active duty members to cut corners and get the job done faster, but they were also doing it for financial gain for themselves.

Our investigations halted some of the work that was being done, but it was [stopped] for the right reasons.”

Then there is the counter intelligence cell, which works to prevent hostile foreign intelligence entities from gaining knowledge that could be harmful to the Air Force and the U.S. “We’re pretty fortunate that we get to do this kind of work day-by-day, keeping the community safe,” Ouellette said.

Though it is unlikely for an Airman to be selected straight into AFOSI, the application process can begin early in an Airman’s career.

The procedure is similar for both officers and enlisted members. However, enlisted applicants must be at least a senior airman with a line number for staff sergeant. While technical sergeants can be accepted with strong packages, the focus is more on staff sergeants and staff sergeant selects. Applicants must be able to be released from their career fields. This can be checked through the Air Force Personnel Center. For overseas Airmen, applicants must also be within 13 to 11 months of their date eligible to return from overseas. They must also have good performance reports.

If all requirements are met, potential agents will then be interviewed by the local AFOSI unit commander or superintendent and go through a background check.

six months from the day I knocked on the AFOSI door to the day I was notified I was going to train,” De Jesus said.

“Initially, it was overwhelming because they are asking a lot of information about 10 years of my history. Once you get all that information, there is really nothing to the process since the agent does all of the leg work.”

The background check will look for indicators that could potentially make a person unfit to be an agent such as financial issues, marital problems or trouble with the law. However, some things do not rule an applicant out automatically.

“The key is you want to have integrity and offer that information up,” Ouellette said. “You don’t want to have skeletons come up when you are an agent on a stand testifying and someone brings up your past before you came in the military.

If all this stuff is known and you still appear to be a good applicant, we put your package in front of a review board.”

Applicants with certain backgrounds or skills can bolster their packages to put them a step ahead of other AFOSI hopefuls.

“It helps to have a background or at least a keen interest in law enforcement, counterintelligence, cyber skills or speak another language,” Ouellette said.

The board reviews the package and votes on whether or not a candidate should become an agent.

If selected to become an agent, applicants will then go through approximately four months of training. The program starts with trainees working alongside other federal agency trainees, then moves on to more specialized AFOSI training.

Once done with training, agents spend their first 12 to 18 months as a probationary agent. During this time, special agents will complete core tasks as part of their upgrade training. They will take online and residential courses, go on temporary duty assignments

and complete monthly evaluations to become proficient in their duties. A package is then submitted to the AFOSI general officer to be signed.

“After that time and it looks like you passed everything, you become a fullfledged agent,” Ouellette said.

Once an agent, Airmen have the opportunity to become specialists.

“We have another AFOSI unit that is made up of purely specialists,” Ouellette said. “We are talking polygraphers, technical services, and forensic scientist consultants.

If you are really good at electronics, you might be perfect for the tech services career field later on.”

Agents on the technical service track can move on after completing their first assignment. If not on that route, agents still have the opportunity to apply for a specialty area.

Though being a part of AFOSI is a way to impact and protect the Air Force and the community, Airmen do not need to become a special agent to do so. One way all Airmen can protect others is through Eagle Eyes.

Eagle Eyes is an Air Force-wide program designed to deter terrorism by recognizing and reporting suspicious activity, and AFOSI, as their motto says, are the “Eyes of the Eagle.”

“Eagle Eyes is not just a force protection against terrorist acts but also against regular people doing bad things out there in the world,” Ouellette said.

Ouellette encourages everyone to use Eagle Eyes to aid AFOSI and security forces protect the Air Force and the community.

Building a better base with sweat, metal

by Airman First Class Michael Stuart 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Usually when someone breaks into an office or manipulates their way into a safe, the average individual would be alarmed, but breaking and entering is just in a day’s work for the 786th Civil Engineer Squadron.

When not conducting a breaking and entering, the 786th CES builds, repairs and maintains structures all around Ramstein. Depending on the job, they could be working in their own shop or on-location.

Everyone has a job to do on base, but they can’t complete their jobs successfully if they don’t have the facilities and buildings to work out of. The 786th CES ensures every Airman on base has an adequate structure to work out of.

“I think my job greatly impacts the mission here at Ramstein,” said Senior Airman Kyle Lahtinen, 786th CES structural journeyman. “No one can do their job unless they have a facility where they can work.”

“Here in the metal shop, we install a lot of doors, windows, safety handrails and a lot of fixed ladders and stairs,” said Lahtinen. “We work on anything structural.”

With Ramstein being such a large base with lots of construction, the welding shop, along with the rest of 786th CES, keeps busy.

“We usually receive about 30 to 40 work orders a month,” said Tech.

Napoleon B. Yates Obituary

Napoleon (Nappy) Burton Yates, 85, of Ramstein, Germany, passed away in Kaiserslautern on Wednesday, August 6, 2014.

Nappy was born in Savoyard, KY on February 22, 1929, to the late Luther and Elizabeth Yates. He graduated from high school and attended Kentucky State University before embarking on his 30 year active duty Air Force career followed by an additional 33 years of service to his country as a civilian DoD employee.

He was a beloved member of the Kaiserslautern American military and German communities.

Nappy is survived by his wife, Ursula L. Yates of Ramstein, Germany, and son, Michael Yates of Sacramento, CA. Memorial services will be held in private during the week of 18 - 24 August 2014 in the city of Ramstein, Germany.

HVAC Airmen refresh contingency skills

Whether in Alaska shivering during the long winter months or stationed on the sandy beaches of Florida, every Airman should have heating, ventilation or air conditioning. That’s why the 435th Construction and Training Squadron gives heating, ventilation and air conditioning training to Guard, Reserve and active-duty Airmen to sharpen their HVAC abilities.

The 435th CTS teaches monthly seven-day contingency HVAC training for deploying Airmen from all over the Air Force. From keeping computers from overheating, to ensuring food doesn’t spoil, temperature regulation is a vital part of Air Force mission success.

Each day starts off with a classroom session going over the fundamentals to ensure the Airmen are comfortable with the material.

“I already knew the material we went over today, but this course just makes me more confident when in the field,” said Senior Airman Robert Stocks, 52nd Civil Engineer Squadron HVAC journeyman,

from Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany.

After some time in the classroom each day, the Airmen start the hands-on portion of the training. They take apart, inspect and troubleshoot field-deployable, environmental control units. The FDECUs are five-ton HVAC units that are used to heat or cool a variety of shelter systems such as personnel tents and communications facilities in deployed locations and cost around $10,800.

Stocks said he felt more confident about being able to fix the FDECU after the hands-on training.

The instructors of the class complete a two-week principles of instruction course to learn the proper ways to teach students, as well as how to make lesson plans.

“I’m directly involved in helping train hundreds of members that come through this seven-day course ... giving them [the] knowledge to troubleshoot and fix contingency operation equipment downrange,” said Staff Sgt. Patrick Robinson, 435th CTS HVAC contingency silver flag instructor. “That’s my favorite part of my job.”

Robinson said he feels he has a positive impact in helping sharpen Airmen’s abilities.

“Being an instructor and seeing people’s face light up when they learn something new or hear their positive feedback at the end of the course is a satisfying feeling,” said Robinson. “The exciting part of my job is seeing the result of my instruction. Two years ago I trained one of my students, and now he’s here right alongside of me instructing as well. That gave me the feeling that I inspired him somehow to come on the mission and help out other members of the Air Force.”

According to Robinson, HVAC affects many people and helps the overall mission of the Air Force in multiple ways.

“If you’re deployed to Africa, Afghanistan or many different countries, you’re directly involved in improving the quality of life of a lot of Airmen,” said Robinson.

Robinson also said, that if he had to get others to join him in his career field, he would emphasize that his role, as instructor, touches lives.

HVAC plays a significant part in the AF mission.

Regulating the temperature of facilities in deployed locations, properly storing food and overall climate control is the work of the 435th CTS HVAC team.

21st TSC shows Soldiers the mechanics of vehicle safety

This road system is known for its increased speed limits and areas without speed limits entirely. In order to protect its Soldiers, one Army command is taking steps to prevent injury and loss of life or property on the open road.

The 21st Theater Sustainment Command held a command-wide safety stand down day focused on vehicle and driver safety Aug. 7.

Every unit within the 21st TSC took time out of their day to bring their Soldiers together to discuss driver safety, vehicle maintenance and the influence of alcohol on drivers. Unit leadership also educated their personnel on the dangers of driving fatigued, how to prevent a driving under the influence charge and the dangers of driving while distracted. Another

important topic of discussion was having a plan every time a Soldier gets behind the wheel of their car.

“Safety is always important, no matter what the situation,” said Master Sgt. Eugene L. Saunders, the 21st Special Troops Battalion, 21st TSC operations noncommissioned officer in charge and a native of Pittsburg, PA. “The commanding general (Maj. Gen. John R. O’Connor) wanted this safety stand down. I think it’s great that he takes such a high interest in his Soldier’s well-being.”

As an added precaution, every Soldier’s personally-owned vehicle within the command was inspected by an Army mechanic. The maintenance personnel ensured the vehicle fluids were at safe levels, the brakes were in working order, all lights were functional and that the tires had enough tread on them.

“We are having the mechanics do an in-depth safety inspection on each vehicle,” said Staff Sgt.

Ian Dimmick, an operations noncommissioned officer with the 21st STB and a native of The Dalles, OR. “We want to make sure that each vehicle is checked before the Soldier leaves today.”

Other organizations from U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz and the 21st TSC gave presentations including the fire department and Soldiers from the 18th Military Police Brigade. Although other topics such as fire safety and force protection were covered, the theme of the day came through in every presentation: today is about vehicle and driver safety. “(There are) higher speed limits in Germany, so everyone should have their car in tip-top shape, so they will not have any problems on the road,” said Brian J. Judge, the safety director for the 21st TSC and a native of Lawrence, MA. “Having your vehicle inspected by a military mechanic is a good way to prevent potential mechanical problems while driving.”

ASACS

Adolescent Substance Abuse Counseling Service is a comprehensive program providing prevention education, and counseling services to 11- to 19 year-old ID card holders in the military community. Medieval group holds market, celebrates 20th anniversary

by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The association for medieval culture and fantasy role-playing called “Die Legende,” the legend, holds its 10th legendary medieval market today through Sunday at Volkspark in Kaiserslautern.

“This year we are celebrating our 20th anniversary,” said Legende member Mark Schutte.

“Doors open at 1 p.m. today and the official market opening with Kaiserslautern’s lord mayor and distinguished visitors takes place at 7 p.m. at the music pavilion.”

In Volkspark, amidst old trees, visitors are taken on a journey into the Middle Ages. An entertaining program is presented with fire shows, activities on stage, artists’ presentations and walking acts to include music groups, minstrel singers, dance groups, jugglers, court jesters, magicians and fire-eaters.

About 800 participants dressed in old costumes display living in medieval times. They will house in a camp consisting of about 300 tents. More than 120 craftsmen and vendors’ stands will be set up. Craftsmen such as blacksmiths, lantern makers, basket makers, tanners, armorers, printers and makers of coats of mail will present former skills. Vendors will sell handcrafted and other items such as perfumes, glass products, jewelry, wreaths, ceramics, candles and bee products.

Knights in armaments will demonstrate fights with different weapons in the knights’camp.

Culinary and drinking specialties being offered include flat cakes, chicken wings, meat on a spit, goulash, raisin bread, mead, malt whisky, dark beer, juices, teas and wines.

A special children’s program features a wooden merry-go-round and Angvik’s dragon boat. Children also can try archery, do pottery, play medieval games, listen to fairy tales and watch magicians.

Fire shows are scheduled for 9 p.m. today and Saturday.

“We expect about 30,000 visitors from all over to join us this weekend,” said Schutte.

“We gave USO in Landstuhl 50 tickets for wounded warriors. We also arrange their transportation,” he added.

Free shuttle buses are available to take visitors from the P+R parking lot

near autobahn A6 exit KaiserslauternEast to the medieval market in Volkspark.

Buses will run during the market’s opening hours and until one hour after closing, Market hours are 1 to 10 p.m. today, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.

7 great day trips in Germany Potzberg Wild Animal Park Every day from spring to fall there is a Birds of Prey Show at the Potzberg Wild Animal Park. Even visitors who don’t speak German get a thrill when the hawks swoop past. The spacious zoo has several animals and is a wonderful way to catch a glimpse of the wild boar that dominate the local forests.

lift runs up a mountain. Walking around, smelling the dust, noticing the weather feeling the immensity of the factory sparks the imagination into seeing what it would have been like to work there. A tour of the plant takes around 3 hours and is well worth the short drive to the Saarbrucken area.

Perfect 1-day hike near the KMC Wolfstein is only a half-hour from the Kaiserslautern Military Community of Kaiserslautern, Ramstein and Landstuhl and the home to one of the greatest one-day hikes in Germany.

The first stage of the Pfälzer Höhenweg, around the town of Wolfstein in the northwest of the region, allows you to enjoy a small but scenic part of the 100 km long trail. story and photos by Michael, contributing writer “It was, quite simply, the best oneday hiking trip we had ever done.” states Michael, blogger at Easyhiker. co.uk The loop around town, at a length of just under 12 km, is neither too exhausting nor so short that it would deny you the feeling of accomplishment (which then entitles you to an extra large serving at the dinner table).

The trail leads you clockwise

around the town – imagine Wolfstein on the “12” – and provides a surprising degree of variety. In the beginning, in particular, you will get splendid views over the hills around you, but there is a lot of forest, too, all rounded off with a couple of castle ruins near the end.

The trail is easy to find and, overall, very well marked.

Simply turn left out of the hotel and follow the markers to the Youth Hostel (the “Jugendherberge”) – you are now on a “feeder route” of the Höhenweg – on a fairly steep climb

uphill and just continue straight – into the Höhenweg trail proper – when the hostel appears on your right hand side.

From then on, just follow the trail markers – until the very end when you can already see the town from above. Which is when you must descend rather than continue uphill, which will be so obvious you can’t miss it!

Before, however, there were a few close calls. None closer than 2 km from the end when you must take a steep right turn off the path on the ridge.
