Brig. Gen. Jon Thomas, 86th Airlift Wing commander, presided over Col. Richard Sheffe’s assumption of command of the newly redesignated 65th ABG. Col. Sheffe assumed command of the 65th ABG during a redesignation ceremony Aug. 14 on Lajes Field, Azores, Portugal. With this redesignation ceremony, the 65th ABG is now aligned under the 86th AW and remains positioned to provide agile combat support and services to aircraft and aircrew.
“Know that today when we change this command, this is not a shift in the com-
mitment of the United States to the Portuguese people,” Ray said. “Portugal is an
incredible strategic partner, and we remain committed to that relationship both as a
bilateral friend and ally and as part of the NATO alliance.” The distinguished history of the 65th ABW has a proud heritage tracing back to World War II. Though the designation of the unit will change, all lineage and honors of the wing will continue under the 65th ABG. “To the Airmen, you conduct an incredibly important mission, and I applaud your style and performance,” Ray said. “I look forward to continued news of your success and accomplishments as the 65th Air Base Group.” During the ceremony, Ray presented Rothrock with the Legion of Merit for his outstanding leadership. Rothrock relinquished his command, and the 65th ABW guidon was furled. The unit was then redesignated as the 65th ABG under the 86th AW. See LAJES, Page 3

OTOPENI AIR BASE, Romania — Ramstein personnel and 86th Airlift Wing C-130J Super Hercules aircraft arrived Aug. 14 at Otopeni Air Base, Romania, to participate in an off-station training exercise, Carpathian Summer. The bilateral training exercise was designed to allow Airmen to increase readiness and interoperability with the Romanian air force.
“I’m hoping to partner with our Romanian friends, learn some things from them and teach some things as well,” said Tech. Sgt. Peter Schopperle, 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron NCOIC of aerial delivery. To further emphasize and increase interoperability, the U.S. Air Force transferred the C-130Js’ authority to NATO for the duration of the event. Holistic fitness and resilience is essential every day
COMMENTARY
by Capt. Diego Torres 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron I recently achieved one of my lifelong career goals. As a flight nurse evaluator, I was afforded the rare opportunity to compete for the Army’s Expert Field Medical Badge. Medical personnel consider the EFMB one of the most difficult and prestigious skill badges a military medical technician can earn. The competition encompassed 10 major graded areas including more than 40 common Soldier and medical tasks. All U.S. and NATO military personnel are eligible to compete for the EFMB, but only 15 percent of the candidates make it through the taxing curriculum. The Air Force’s four domains of spiritual, emotional, physical and social wellness were vital to successfully persevering through two of the longest weeks of my life. Although I may not have realized it during those two weeks, both cadre and leadership highlighted that my domains were truly put to the test. After some reflection, I had to agree. This competition drove me to balance all of my four domains as the trials put my body and mind to the test. To earn the badge, I had to com-

to enhance interoperability and readiness to conduct combined air operations with Romania and NATO as allies routinely transfer their assests to NATO for air policing or during training and exercises. Along with increasing joint
plete rigorous written and performance qualification tasks. Some tasks included: weapons qualification, day and night land navigation, medical field assessments, vehicle extraction, weapon disassembly and assembly, movement under direct fire, transmitting of medical evacuation 9-line request and a 12 mile road march with a standard fighting load. My social domain was tested the moment I arrived. I was one of only two Air Force medics in this competition, so all eyes were focused on us. We were outsiders being scrutinized to determine if we’d make the cut or how far we'd make it. Although the rank structure amongst candidates ranged from private first class to lieutenant colonel, it did not matter. We were all assigned a candidate number and considered equals. However, the awkward silence was chilling. To break the ice, my social skills took charge, and I immediately introduced myself to the Army sergeant next to me. I turned on my charisma and capitalized on my prior Army enlisted days as an artillery specialist to fit in while taking care of the other Air Force medic. After that initial encounter, the connectedness and socialization were critical in accomplishing the challenges because we were

all striving for excellence. The three combat lane tasks definitely put my mental and spiritual domains to the test. Before the beginning of each lane, the candidates were put in a tent and individually called forward. A safety brief was given, and a lane evaluator was assigned to each candidate. The evaluator followed the candidate through the combat lane and graded each individual task. This was the most stressful time since the candidate only received two possible outcomes: a “go” which allows the candidate to continue, or a “nogo” that sends the candidate home. I had mentally prepared myself by dedicating the time to study unfamiliar territory and practicing the tasks weeks prior to the competition. Spiritually, I believe in never giving up and, as our Airman’s Creed cites, “I will not fail.” Many of the EFMB physical tasks were extremely challenging. In order to qualify for the competition, the candidate has to pass the Army physical fitness test. Moreover, the competition culminated in a 12 mile ruck march that had to be completed in three hours. This was a final check on my physical and spiritual pillars. Each mile marker I passed was a tremendously great feeling. It meant I was getting closer to the finish line, and my physi-

cal preparation was paying off. However, around mile nine, my body started to feel stressed. At this point, my spiritual domain was in full effect. I knew I had a purpose here, and that was to successfully earn my EFMB. The Air Force core value of “excellence in all we do” and perseverance kept my legs moving and pushed me the last mile and a half. After crossing the finish line, I was greeted by an evaluator who performed an equipment shakedown of the required items to verify they were still in my possession. Afterward, he looked at me and said, “congratulations sir, you may proceed to the graduation and get your badge.” I made the cut! Earning such a prestigious badge was an experience I will never forget. It was a true test of my abilities as a medical officer and leader. It was an honor and privilege to challenge myself in this joint and multinational environment. The Air Force often affords us opportunities to excel and challenges to meet as in formal competitions such as the EFMB process or in daily tasks we perform to accomplish our mission. It is important to keep a healthy balance between the four domains of spiritual, emotional, physical and social wellness to help you succeed in any challenge that comes your way. just kicking off, enthusiasm is high as Airmen and their Romanian counterparts seem eager to work. “I want to get the overall experience of doing my job in a different environment and atmosphere and learning as much as possible,” Schopperle said.

“I want to extend my greetings to the Airmen of the 65th Air Base Group,” Thomas said. “You are now part of the mighty 86th. You can now count on the other members of the mighty 86th to work with you in the success of your mission here at Lajes Field.” After assuming command and receiving the 65th ABG guidon from Thomas, Sheffe, alongside 65th ABG command chief, Chief Master Sgt. Justin Walker, spoke to Lajes Airmen, calling it an honor to lead them. “My promise to the 65th Air Base Group is simple — I will serve you all by leading justly and professionally as we open a new chapter in the story of Lajes Air Base,” Sheffe said. Sheffe, a senior pilot with more than 2,600 flight hours in the C-5, arrived at Lajes Field from NATO Allied Joint Force Command, Brunssum, the Netherlands, where he was the chief of nuclear operations. “When you research the history of this airfield and the nearly 70-year relationship with the U.S. forces and our Portuguese hosts, you can clearly see the strategic capability resonate on this installation,” Sheffe said. “This is a warfighting platform capable of contributing greatly to the defense of our allies and partners in the pursuit of peace.” Sheffe is a 1994 graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, where he

Thomas addressed Sheffe with advice for the incoming 65th ABG. “Command is fundamentally a human endeavor, and we need to remember this at each step of the way,” Thomas said. “We need to remember the dignity of all individuals: Americans, Portuguese, military and civilians. That is how we conduct ourselves, and that is how command is successfully executed.” Before closing, Rothrock reflected on the valued relationships he and his family built with Lajes Airmen. “I could not ask for better professionals to work with than the Portuguese and U.S. Airmen at Lajes Field,” Rothrock said. “Although in the midst of change, there is a culture of excellence, loyalty and dedication shared both by Americans and the Portuguese.” (The 65th Air Base Group is the American unit stationed at Lajes Field, Azores, Portugal. Eric Johnson, AFCEC pavements and equipment force development manager. “We are working with the Army’s Soldier for Life in hopes that this same course will be available to all Department of Defense members in USAFE to enhance the safety of all DOD tractor trailer operators, as well as ease the transition process upon separation.” Prior to being taught in USAFE, the training was only offered at Fort Indiantown Gap, Pa., and Dobbins Air Reserve Base, Ga., so any Airmen stationed overseas would have to be flown back to the U.S. to receive this training. Both of the operating locations in the U.S. have received accreditation from the Professional Truck Driver Institute, making the AFCEC the only uniformed school, and one of 57 civilian schools, in the U.S. to hold this accreditation. TCCC helps Airmen save lives Story and photos by Senior Airman Nicole Sikorski 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs BAUMHOLDER, Germany — First responders from Ramstein came together to train on urban evacuation procedures at the biannual Tactical Combat Casualty Care course Aug. 3 through 6 on Baumholder. More than 20 Airmen from the 435th Contingency Response Support Squadron,
435th Security Forces Squadron and the 86th Medical Group participated in the course, which tested them in situations that could occur in a hostile environment. According to Tech Sgt. Jose Obregon, 435th Contingency Response Group independent duty medical technician, TCCC is an extremely efficient system. “It has the highest survivability rate in combat when taking (care of) casualties because you are preventing people from getting injured,” Obregon said.
Ramstein Airmen conduct medical evacuation drills Aug. 5 on Baumholder.
All U.S. Air Force special operations groups incorporate TCCC into their training because of its success in the field. During the course, they practiced urban medical evacuation techniques, closequarters combat, troop leading procedures and experienced trauma simulations. Throughout the first two days of the classroom portion, instructors took students through drills to familiarize them with combat lifesaver training and self-aid and buddy care. After reviewing these skills, instructors taught students the steps that they should take when they come in contact with enemy fire. The lesson included how to gain fire superiority and treat uncontrolled bleeding with a tourniquet while continuing tactical field care with the medical training they receive.
Staff Sgt. Mark Kegel, 435th Security Forces Squadron Ground Combat Regional Training Center instructor, guards a door during the biannual Tactical Combat Casualty Care course Aug. 5 on Baumholder.
Finally, they took the Airmen to the training range to practice the techniques before being tested on their performance during the Field Training Exercise. “It’s been a much needed experience, especially for 435th (CRG) members,” said Staff Sgt. Andrew Bowers, 435th CRSS Ground Combat Readiness Regional Training Center NCOIC of medical operations. “For those who are not defenders (security forces members) or medics, it allows us to integrate on
another level ... It’s good to train together because we work closely with them.” “It’s important to do this training because not only are you equipping a small group of people with these skills, but they will pass it on to other deploying members,” Obregon said. “In turn, those members are getting a piece of the best medical training offered by the Department of Defense.” This training will continue to save lives and prevent injuries as it is passed on throughout the Air Force.

Air Force Civil Engineer Center instructors and students started a day of behind-the-wheel training for the AFCEC Tractor Trailer Training program Aug. 10 on Ramstein. This is the first time this program is being taught in U.S. Air Forces in Europe. It teaches students tractor trailer general knowledge, vehicle inspections, shifting proficiency, advanced backing maneuvers and over-the-road operating skills.
Training, from Page 6
taking the course, students are required to complete an in-depth online training course which covers tractor trailer general knowledge, safety, the trucking industry and more. They participate in 80 hours of in-residence training at the training location. An average of 58 of the in-residence hours is used for behind-the-wheel training. The 3T program is scheduled to be held quarterly with four students per class and teaches “Class A” vehicle general knowledge, vehicle inspections, shifting proficiency, advanced backing maneuvers and over-the-road operating skills. It differs from the courses taught in the U.S. in that it includes a crash course to ensure students know how to follow German road signs and trains them for both European and U.S. specification tractor trailer vehicles. “Having this class available in USAFE is important because it ensures Airmen are properly trained and that they are safe and knowledgeable drivers and prepared to drive any type of tractor trailer vehicle they come upon,” Abrams said. Many Airmen who take
the course already have some knowledge of how to drive a tractor trailer vehicle, but the class offers more in-depth training. “When I first started in this course I didn’t even know how to attempt the method of double clutching, and that was a skill I gained in this class,” said Senior Airman Jerhl Haymon, 786th Civil Engineer Squadron heavy equipment operator. “I believe this course is a must have, especially for first-term Airmen. You gain a lifelong skill.” Upon graduation, an Airman will receive a certificate with the PTDI seal of training, proving the Airman’s level of skill with a tractor trailer. “Since a student will graduate with a certificate of training, a potential employer knows they were properly trained, and it makes the student more marketable,” Abrams said. “In our career field, we receive a lot of training that isn’t easily transferred to the civilian sector. We are setting up these Airmen for success once they decide to transition out of the Air Force.” Through the AFCEC 3T program, Airmen can gain the knowledge and skills needed to improve their career, whether it’s in the Air Force or as a civilian.

Boil the noodles until they are almost done. General guideline: perfectly cooked pasta that is “al dente,” or firm to the bite, yet cooked through, requires you to test it yourself when the time is near. Meanwhile heat a pan that is big enough to contain the vegetables and the noodles. Add the margarine and let it get hot. Add the diced onion, carrots and a little bit of vegetarian bouillon. Let it reduce. After two minutes add the zucchini and the bell peppers. Add the rest of the vegetarian bouillon then the warm noodles, and let it simmer for 3 to 4 minutes (don’t forget to stir it from time to time). If you prefer, add herbs and liquid cream...and then we are good... A fast, healthy and inexpensive meal! Yummy !
See you next week for another delicious recipe!

7th CSC hosts Inaugural Combatives Tournament Story and photo by Sgt. Daniel Friedberg 7th Civil Support Command Public Affairs Office SEMBACH, Germany — Soldiers and Airmen from units across the KMC grappled, twisted and pinned each other in multiple bouts on a warm summer day at the Inaugural Combatives Tournament hosted by the 7th Civil Support Command Aug. 14 inside the Sembach Kaserne Fitness Center. The tournament, with more than 20 competitors, was held as a morale building activity with the emphasis on the non-lethal principles of Army combatives including selfdefense and crowd control skills for deployed Soldiers during peacekeeping operations and combat deployments. “It’s the (U.S. Army) Ranger Regiments who came up with it,” said
Army Staff Sgt. David W. Maybury, 7th CSC Soldier, and the tournament NCOIC. “If they (Soldiers) are in close quarters combat, if their weapons jam, if they have a malfunction, they can easily sling their weapons and engage their opponent hand to hand.” In addition to the tactical benefits of Army combatives, some psychological advantages of combatives include building selfconfidence and focus under stress. “This is about building confidence,” said Army Command Sgt. Maj. James Murrin, senior enlisted leader of the 7th CSC. For Army Spc. Damaris Gonzalez of the 92nd Military Police Company, her participation in the tournament started out as a lost bet. Gonzalez said that she was called out by friends for making a joke about the
combatives competition. “I started to roll around and figure out some moves I could do,” Gonzalez said about her preparation one week before the competition. Gonzalez would later win the lightweight category. Other participants were able to rely on more training and experience but still found the tournament to be a serious challenge. Army Sgt. John Rene of the 457th Civil Affairs Company said that despite boxing both as an amateur and a professional since he was 5 years old, he finds that the tournament rules required him to change his tactics. “You can’t punch anybody here, (or) else they disqualify you,” Rene said. “It’s all wrestling here.” According to Murrin, the next combatives tournament is tentatively planned for December.

Training focuses on scenarios based on the U.N. Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic where U.S.-trained Zambian Defense Force personnel are
currently supporting peacekeeping operations. Corey reminded all participants to work together and learn from each other during the exercise. “Many of our African partners have a lot of experience with U.N. operations, Corey
said. “This is about partnering. Exercise participants used U.N. Security Resolution
August 21, 2015 2149 that initiated the MINUSCA to coordinate efforts during the exercise, said Capt. Scott Saunders, USARAF exercises deputy. Each country’s military has its own doctrine that presents a challenge when trying to work together as a single military staff. “We all have our own methods for problem solving, Saunders said. “We need to speak a common language, and that’s where the U.N. doctrine comes in. “Most of the Americans have very little experience with U.N. operations, Corey said. “We are learning together. The CPX helps validate the ability of a combined staff from partner nations to exer-
cise command and control of a joint, combined force during peacekeeping operations. The FTX training permits combined companies of U.S. and Zambian personnel to train together in both combined arms tactics and peacekeeping operations. “The element of realism in the practical aspect of this training will present challenges, Mulenga said. “I commend the governments of partner nations, the United States Embassy Zambia, the Zambian service chiefs and all of you present here today for putting on this important event, Mulenga said. “It is now my honor and privilege to declare Southern Accord 15 officially open.

Matzenbach displays life in the Middle Ages by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs For the fifth time, the community of Glan-Muenchweiler will sponsor a medieval market Saturday and Sunday in Matzenbach. Since 2009, medieval groups have come to Matzenbach every two years to present the Middle Ages. “The Vikings will come in their rowing boat on the Glan River,” said Steffen Schultheiss from the GlanMuenchweiler union community. “Other groups from various eras of the Middle Ages will also put up their camps in the valley along the river.” There will a knights’ camp, vendors, craftsmen and artists. Knights will demonstrate show fights on horses and artists will present fire shows. At nightfall, actors in medieval costumes will demonstrate horrible scenery regarding the plague that was nearby around A.D. 1600. The so-called “black death” killed all residents of two villages in the Glan Valley, Reichsweiler and Froschweiler. “In this performance, the plague will be defeated. To celebrate this victory, a 10-member group will present a fire show as highlight of Saturday night,” Schultheiss said. Craftsmen such as blacksmiths, wood carvers, bow makers and pearl makers will demonstrate their skills. Vendors will sell clothes, jewelry, weapons, children’s toys and other items. Jugglers and musicians will entertain the audience throughout the days.

The Vikings will come to the Matzenbach medieval market in their rowing boat Saturday and Sunday.
Visitors will find neat taverns where medieval food specialties and drinks will be served. The castle kitchen will prepare chicken, lamb, jam, game and pork specialties, as well as sweet items. The traditional meat and beer from the Middle Ages will be available to taste. “Our community, with Mayor Klaus Schillo, hopes to be able to welcome a lot of guests to celebrate with us,”
Schultheiss said. The entrance fee is €4, but visitors in traditional costumes and children are admitted free. The event location can be found on Eisenacher Strasse 16 in 66909 Matzenbach. From the Matzenbach train station it only takes a minute to walk to the market area. For more information, visit www.vg-glm.de.

Living History in the Black Forest
Story and photos by Wendy Payne contributing writer for MilitaryInGermany.com Along the Black Forest Railway, about an hour and a half from Stuttgart, nestled in the Black Forest is the little valley town of Gutach. With a recommendation from the USO and some friends, we visited the Schwarzwälder Freilichtmuseum Vogtbauernhof. This living history farmstead that is over 400 years old is interactive and fun! My friend Betsey and I brought our older children for kicks, and we had a hard time pulling them away. Normally I would say this is a good pick for younger children, but I would be wrong. It’s great for everyone! Interactive Open-Air Museum
I think hands-on is the best way to learn. A great place for a field trip, the park was filled with children seeing, hearing, saying and doing all kinds of 17th century craft and artisan work. This living history museum also has daily demonstrations during the summer from hand-made crafts, cooking, and milling from the early 1600 to 1700 periods. There are
and forestry that includes a maze for children. What’s Good to Eat
over 16 out-buildings and eight farmhouses to see and experience throughout the homestead. Park workers are in traditional costumes representative of Black Forest cultural history. One of the
most interesting costumes was the red plume hats the unmarried, virtuous young women wore during this time in history. It eventually became a symbol of the BadenWürttemberg region. The newest exhibit is in the Lorenzenhof House. This building (built in 1608) has moved from its original site in Oberwolfbach in the Kinzig Valley. Right now they have an amazing exhibition on various elements of the forest
When you approach the museum, you’ll see nice little souvenir shops and eateries as well as a bakery. We chose to eat at the museum’s restaurant Zum Hofengel. We were delighted with the restaurant’s delicacies of “Käsespätzle mit Speck” (cheese pasta with bacon) and Jägerschnitzel (traditional schnitzel with mushroom sauce). Of course, we also had to split a piece of Schwarzwälder Kirsch Torte (Black Forest Cherry Cake). The restaurant’s service was impeccable and the decor is warm and welcoming. It’s also worth noting that there is an outdoor patio and larger table seating inside. General Information
The museum’s hours from March 29 to November 8 are the following: open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (last admission 5 p.m.) in August from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. (last admission 6 p.m.). The museum’s restaurant is open throughout the season, daily from
9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Ticket prices are the following: Adults: €9, Senior Citizens, Students, military/social service, handicapped: €8, Children and Adolescents (6 – 17 years): €5, Audioguide (German, English, French): €3, Family day pass + 1 child, (parents with their minor children): €20.50, Family day pass + 2 children, (parents with their minor children): €22.50, Family day pass + 3 children or more, (parents with their minor children) €28.50, Season card adult: €25, Season card families: €42 Go to the museum’s website for additional information. How to Get There If you are using a navigational or GPS system, be careful what you punch in for your address. We went by the longer route to Gutach and typed in an address that was not on my GPS. We eventually made it, but I made a special note to include the correct navigation here for you. It is Vogtsbauernhof, Vogtsbauernhof 1, 77793 Gutach or Wählerbrücke. Click on DB Bahn for train information. It was a beautiful ride through the Black Forest but a few winding roads. My daughter used her sea bands against motion sickness and then she was fine. She also enjoys gardening, hiking, yoga and sharing Europe with people.

Munich: one of Europe’s great cities by Karl Weisel U.S Army Garrison Wiesbaden Marketing Office Some Americans on whirlwind tours of Europe make it a point to visit the classic cities such as Rome, Paris and London while stationed in Europe. But many overlook one of the truly great cities not so far from home — Munich. Bavaria’s capital may have a reputation as home to the ever popular annual bout of debauchery known as the Oktoberfest, but the city offers a wealth of other attractions. Palaces, historical buildings, museums galore, cozy beer gardens on every corner and miles of green areas that provide a variety of sightseeing and relaxation opportunities. If indeed your heart is set on the annual Oktoberfest, which features 14 huge beer tents and a host of carnival rides that attract visitors from all over the globe, this year’s festival runs from Sept. 19 to Oct. 4. Rather than traveling by car, hop the train or catch a ride with your local USO to avoid parking problems and the risk of mixing drinking and driving. But keep in mind that you needn’t wait for the Oktoberfest to enjoy the ambiance of Munich. Besides overflowing with culture the city has a lively student section, Schwabing and the Universität, a bustling shopping district up and down the Kaufinger Strasse, more amiable beer halls than any other German city and a park featuring miles of biking trails, beer gardens, lakes and playgrounds. Munich is also the richest museum city in all of Germany. Like the Louvre in Paris or the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Munich’s Alte and Neue Pinakotheken feature a treasure trove of old and new masters in painting and sculpture. Youngsters will enjoy hours of exploration in the Deutsche Museum, a technological showcase similar to the Ben Franklin Museum in Philadelphia, Pa. History buffs might want to delve into Bavarian history at

the Bavarian Historical Museum. Of course there are also the glassdomed stadiums of the 1972 Olympics. Hop on the U-Bahn at Marienplatz for a ride out to the Olympiazentrum to marvel at the skeleton-like glass constructions. If you’re lucky, you may visit on one of those days when a festival of some kind is being celebrated featuring live music, refreshments and more. Medieval roots Founded in the 12th century by Henry the Lion, Munich quickly became a center for commerce and royal households. As the capital of the Duchy of Bavaria-Munich in the 13th century, many grand households were constructed leading to the city becoming an imperial city in 1338. In 1806, as the capital of Bavaria, the city was home to Germany’s first state constitution. Among the many highlights of Munich is spending some time wandering through the 900 acre Englischer Gartens. Weather permitting, visitors can join the natives in
biking or inline skating through the vast park area. Completed after the Thirty Years War in the 18th century, the Englischer Gartens is the perfect place to rest your feet after sightseeing. Enjoy a Frisbee toss on the grass or lunch at one of the many beer gardens scattered throughout the park. One of the popular center’s of Munich is the Chinese Pagoda area in the park where one can sample local Bavarian culinary fare such as ribs and radishes, sided by a huge fresh pretzel and washed down with a liter mug of Bavarian brew. Join the hundreds of tourists and natives sitting at long outdoor tables enjoying the live music of a traditional oompah band. There’s plenty more to do and see in Munich including visits to its many noted churches, climbing up the tower of the old Town Hall at Marienplatz and listening to its glockenspiel, trekking out to Nymphenburg Castle (a palace modeled on Versailles), sampling goodies at the Viktualien Market or simply strolling along the cold, rushing Isar River. Catch live music
at a club in Schwabing or go shopping for bargains at one of the city’s flea markets. In August, visitors can head out to the Olympic park area to enjoy art, handicrafts, fun and games. The Arts and Crafts Holiday Academy in 2003 is situated around the Olympic Lake and also features a mini sailing regatta. A Summer Festival in the Olympia Park featuring open-air theater, live rock and jazz music takes place through Sunday. Gateway to the Alps Another great thing about a visit to Munich is that it is not far from some of Germany’s most picturesque countryside. A short drive or train ride south from the metropolis takes one into the heart of the Alps to a host of scenic villages such as Murnau near GarmischPartenkirchen or to the many lakes, castles and monasteries in the area. heft is prominent all yearround, and it’s important to secure homes and vehicles whether traveling or staying in the local area. Thieves tend to look for “easy targets.” Easy targets include unlocked car doors, open windows and doors that are not locked with a deadbolt. Most commonly in the colder months, motorcycles and street bikes are stolen. This may be because they are ridden more in the warmer months and are left in one area during colder weather. To prevent these vehicles from being stolen, there are many precautionary measures to take. “For motorcycles, I see a lot of common ways they’re stored,” said Master Sgt. Duane Stinson, 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron superintendent of plans and programs. “If the handlebars are turned all the way to the side and you lock the lock on the ignition, it secures them in place, and the wheels won’t roll straight. That’s a safety feature from the manufacturer. That usually doesn’t stop a thief. What they’re doing is taking two or three people and picking it up. Even ones I’ve seen that are chained, the chains are being cut, so that’s not effective either. The best advice I can give is to store them in garages or sheds to where it’s not in plain sight.” The most commonly stolen item year-round may not be the first thing that comes to mind. Reading the blotter, electronics and wallets may be typical, easy-to-take items, but automobile thefts have been making their way up the charts. “Trending in theft right now are automobiles,” Stinson said. “What we noticed with vehicle theft is targets of

opportunity. They tend to be in conjunction with house break-ins. Lots of people hang their keys right inside the door so they’re easily accessible. If the door isn’t double locked and it’s easy access for a break-in, they’re popping the lock, there’s the keys, after they’re done in the house they jump in the car and drive off.” During extended periods away from home, it’s best to establish a rapport with the landlord and neighbors. “When going on vacation, it’s good to have those people to watch over the house and even take the mail in so the house doesn’t look empty,” said Staff Sgt. Joel Reyes, 569th USFPS police services.
On a daily basis, whether at home or away, one of the best ways to avoid theft is to simply keep doors and windows correctly locked. “Nine times out of 10, the violations we encounter were unsecured houses and vehicles,” Reyes said. “Very rarely do we get calls where everything was locked up. We stress the importance of keeping windows and doors locked when a house is unoccupied. “The (Base Exchange) has some security things for houses. They have window and door alarms, as well as timers for lights,” he continued. “Giving the impression someone is home will help deter a criminal from breaking in.”

TAG meeting
Back-to-school season is here, meaning it’s time for parents to make sure their kids are up to date on their vaccines. Getting children all of the vaccines recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s immunization schedule is one of the most important things parents can do to protect their children’s health and that of classmates and the community. Most schools require children to be current on vaccinations before enrolling to protect the health of all students. Today’s childhood vaccines protect against serious and potentially life-threatening diseases, including polio, measles, whooping cough (pertussis) and chickenpox. “Thanks to vaccines, most of these diseases have become rare in the United States,” said Dr. Anne Schuchat, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, CDC. “But many still exist here, and they can make children very sick, leading to
A Teen Advisory Group meeting will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Sept. 3 at Landstuhl Library. Paws & Pals
The next Paws & Pals event will take place at 3 p.m. Sept. 16 at Landstuhl Library. The Paws & Pals program helps children improve their literacy skills by teaming up with a dog to read books. The dogs are registered volunteer animals that have been trained and are great listeners. Open to preschool through middle school-aged children. many days of missed school, missed work for parents and even hospitalization and death.” In 2012, more than 48,000 cases of whooping cough were reported in the United States. During this time, 20 deaths were reported; the majority of these deaths were in children younger than 3 months of age. When children are not vaccinated, they are at increased risk of disease and can spread diseases to others in their classrooms and community, including babies who are too young to be fully vaccinated and people with weakened immune systems due to cancer and other health conditions. School age children need vaccines. For example, kids who are 4 to 6 years old are due for boosters of four vaccines: diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis; chickenpox; measles, mumps, and rubella; and polio. Older children, such as pre-teens and teens, need: tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis vaccine; human papillomavirus vaccine; and meningococcal conjugate virus vaccine. Mouthguard clinic
The Ramstein Dental Clinic will sponsor a mouthguard clinic 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday during the 86th Medical Group Sports Physical Day. Services offered will include custom mouthguards for adolescents and boil-and-bite mouthguards for children. This mouthguard clinic is open to active duty and retired ID cardholders. Parents need to bring their Department of Defense ID number. For more information, call the dental clinic at 479-2210 or 0631-46-2210.
Fitness center improvements
Over the last two months, a new system and its associated hardware were installed to enable 24/7 access to Vogelweh Fitness Center. Another major project to ensure the safety of customers is a four-month fire detection installation project which began in July. Though the scope of the project is large, the facility will stay open. The VFC has partnered with the 86th Civil Engineer Squadron to design a phased approach to the project, allowing to keep half of the gym floor open. Despite the decrease in space, they will reposition equipment along the gym floor so customers will still be able to complete their work-
Page 27
out. Portions of the project require closing the locker rooms, therefore, customers will have to find an alternate shower plan such as their home, dorm or lodging. Additionally, new resistance and cardio equipment is on order for all three fitness centers run by the 786th Force Support Squadron. The northside and southside fitness centers on Ramstein will see new equipment including resistance and pulley training equipment installed in the parent-child rooms. VFC has a project on the books that will convert a racquetball court to a parent-child room. For more information, call the Vogelweh Fitness Center manager at 489-7329.

Hitman: Agent 47 (R) Centers on an elite assassin who was genetically engineered from conception to be the perfect killing machine and is known only by the last two digits on the barcode tattooed on the back of his neck. He is the culmination of decades of research, and forty-six earlier agent clones, endowing him with unprecedented strength, speed, stamina and intelligence. His latest target is a mega-corporation that plans to unlock the secret of Agent 47’s past to create an army of killers whose powers surpass even his own. Teaming up with a young woman who may hold the secret to overcoming their enemies, 47 confronts revelations about his own origins. Starring Zachary Quinto, Rupert Friend Ant-Man (PG-13) Founding member of The Avengers comes to the big screen for the first time. Armed with the ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, master thief Scott Lang must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world. Starring Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly
