A suicide awareness event was held to raise awareness on suicide awareness among members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community. The intent of the event, and future events, is to create an environment where the importance of mental health and the warning signs of suicide awareness is discussed and participants are encouraged to be a wingman for their coworkers and loved ones.
Story and photos by Airman Trevor Calvert 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Operational Medical Readiness Squadron hosted a suicide awareness event for members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community at Ramstein Air Base, Nov. 18. The event was held to provide members of the KMC a forum to discuss suicide awareness after viewing a movie with mental health themes. The intent of the event was to create an environment where discussing the importance of mental health and the warning signs of suicide is encouraged, as well as encourage others to be a wingman for their coworkers and loved ones. “My hope for this event was not just to highlight mental health,
but for general public awareness and understanding of what might lead somebody to contemplate suicide,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Luke Li, 86th OMRS mental health clinic psychiatrist. “Especially if people find themselves in a situation where there might be warning signs they’re noticing [in themselves or others].” In 2022, suicide was the highest cause of death for military members. In 2021, a research study by Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs discovered an estimated 30,177 military members and veterans committed suicide compared to the 7,052 killed in post 9/11 operations. “I want for us to come together as a community,” Li said. “My intention was to have people gain an awareness of what to look out for. We can’t do it all alone; we need as much support as possible.”
Li will be holding two more suicide awareness events in December and January, and include different films tied to mental health topics, further fostering dialogue about suicide. DOD airlifts humanitarian supplies for Gaza by David Vergun Department of Defense News The United States airlifted more than 54,000 pounds of United Nations humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza, Pentagon Press Secretary Air Force Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder said at a Pentagon news conference, Nov. 28. The aid includes vitally needed medical supplies, warm clothing, food and nutrition assistance. At the request of U.S. Agency for International Development, the supplies were transported via Air Force C-17 Globemaster aircraft and arrived in Al-Arish, Egypt, where they will be transported via ground transportation to Gaza and distributed by U.N. agencies, Ryder said. Additional flights are expected in the coming days, he added. This aid is in addition to the more than 500,000 pounds of food assistance delivered by the United States last week by USAID-contracted aircraft to Al-Arish, for onward travel to Gaza, he said. “With 1.7 million people internally displaced and 2.2 million in need of humanitarian assistance [in Gaza], increased humanitarian supplies are essential to saving lives and alleviating suffering for the most vulnerable,” according to a USAID news release. The United States has mobilized $100 million in humani-

The aid is meant to help thousands of people during a humanitarian pause in hostilities intended to further a surge of lifesaving assistance to Palestinian civilians, said a USAID statement. The United States will continue to lead the humanitarian response in Gaza to further sup-
port those in desperate need. The United States is by far the largest donor to the U.N.’s humanitarian efforts in Gaza, according to USAID. “We are grateful for the additional contributions from a
number of donor partners who have already pledged significant funding, and we continue to advocate for others to do the same. “The U.N.’s global appeal in response to the crisis remains
woefully underfunded with only 21 percent funded, and we call on the international community to urgently step-up their support and deliver on commitments pledged,” said the USAID statement.

Story and photos by Airman Trevor Calvert 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Housed at Ramstein Air Base, the 86th Civil Engineer Squadron provides fire prevention and emergency services to protect and serve members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community. Hosting approximately 206 firefighters makes Ramstein’s Fire Department one of the largest fire emergency services squadrons not only in the U.S. Air Force, but the Department of Defense. The team has won numerous awards for their dedicated and hard work while protecting the community. “One of our bigger achievements was winning the Ralph E. Sanborn Fire Department of the
Year award,” said Armando Auila, 86th CES assistant chief of operations. “We play a crucial role in the community, so receiving awards helps boost our morale.” The firefighters’ 48-hour shifts ensure the Global Gateway retains its fire safety during normal operations and in times of crisis. “Our biggest priority is preventing fires, but we also inspect the buildings that house military members and buildings that hold aircraft,” Auila said. “We maintain utility and sprinkler systems on a daily or monthly basis to make sure that the people contributing to the mission are safe.” The shared commitment of safeguarding the mission strengthens the bond between firefighters everyday. These firefighters are together for days at a time and live
at the firestation while on call. “The best part about the unit is definitely the people you work with,” said U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Albert Garcia, 86th CES firefighter. “We’re all family, especially when the duty day ends. We make dinner together, joke around, and have a good time.” The 86th CES has a small but crucial part of every facility on base, Auila said. In some sort of fashion the fire department helps to support every part of the mission by providing fire prevention measures and emergency services to allow Ramstein to project power from the Global Gateway. The 86th CES fire emergency services provides fire prevention and emergency services to support, protect and serve the Kaiserslautern Military Community.

Samuel Signor 21st Theater Sustainment Command The 16th Sustainment Brigade Support Operations Petroleum and Water Branch, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, provided command and control for 15 U.S. Army sustainment Soldiers during the Central European Pipeline System Proof of Principle on Spangdahlem Air Force Base Sep. 27-29. The overall purpose of the mission was focused on the conversion of fuel and showcased the capability to deliver fuel to partners and allies throughout Europe. The core objectives were to safely and efficiently draw fuel, blend it with additives, and supply top-tier fuel products to bolster critical European theater operations if traditional supply methods become unfeasible. “The focus on the conversion of Jet-A1 fuel to JP-8, along with the capability to deliver fuel to partners and allies during pipeline disruptions, is critically important for several reasons,” said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Milton Rivera Ferrer, a petroleum systems technician and the petroleum and water branch OIC (officer in charge), 16th SB. “Being able to
supply fuel to partners and Allies during times of crisis or disruption strengthens international alliances and partnerships. It demonstrates a commitment to collective defense and support amongst nations.” The CEPS is the largest NATO pipeline system designed to meet the Central European operational requirements in times of peace, crisis, and conflict. It can quickly provide the military with fuel for aircraft, vehicles, and equipment when it is required within Central Europe. This comprehensive and meticulous approach underlines the 21st TSC’s commitment to mission success and ensuring the reliability of the fuel supply chain that is critical to all military operations. “The successful execution of the Proof of Principle exercise within the CEPS framework is a significant achievement that underscores the importance of fuel resilience for military operations in Central Europe,” said Rivera Ferrer. “The CEPS framework remains a cornerstone of military logistics and readiness in Central Europe, and the successful demonstration of alternative fuel delivery capabilities strengthens the region’s defense and security posture.”
This mission brought a unique experience that provided all participants with valuable knowledge that will familiarize and prepare them for future exercises and operations. “Participating as a petroleum systems technician, my involvement in this proof of principle endeavor represented a unique and uncharted territory within both my personal experience and our professional community,” said Rivera Ferrer. “Participating in this initiative was a valuable learning experience for me, as well as for those who were involved, and the knowledge gained from this endeavor has the potential to greatly facilitate future petroleum operations under similar conditions, ultimately enhancing our capabilities and effectiveness in limited environments concerning the procurement of JP-8.” This mission was a joint operation spearheaded by the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, 16th Sustainment Brigade, Joint Petroleum Office, United States European Command, and Defense Logistics Agency Energy. Remote maintenance Soldiers establish personal ties with Ukraine Armed Forces by Natalie Weaver 21st Theater Sustainment Command The first Remote Maintenance Distribution Cell-Ukraine began operation in south-eastern Poland to provide weapons and equipment assistance to Ukraine Armed Forces by Soldiers from 87th Division Sustainment Support Battalion and 16th Sustainment Brigade in May 2022. “We took this task very seriously because the success and lives of the Ukraine Armed Forces depended on the equipment we provided,” said U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer 3 Charles Beeman, armament systems maintenance warrant officer, 16th SB. “We wanted to ensure we were giving our absolute best effort to supplement and enhance their maintenance capabilities." The RDC-U transpired when 87th DSSB deployed to support UAF in March 2022. Within a month of their arrival, 87th DSSB conducted informal hands-on training for nine UAF artillery technicians with 18 retrograde M777 howitzers. However, service tickets from UAF continued to flood in and Chief Warrant Officer 2 Sun Kim, armament systems maintenance warrant officer, 87th DSSB, saw the need for more efficient maintenance support. When she noticed one service request pending for over two weeks, Kim asked herself, “how can we better support them?” Her solution was hosting a video

communication support channel to a UAF member. “We were their only resource,” said Kim. The 87th DSSB established a strong relationship with UAF through these chats. “We were in it together,” said Kim. “I considered them my battle buddies.” Kim said chats were open 24 hours for communication and eventually reached UAF on the front lines to immediately assist battle equipment malfunctions. 16th SB took over the RDC-U in October 2022 and is currently assisting in sustaining operations. Sgt. 1st Class Tracee Bowman, maintenance supervisor, 16th SB, was amazed by how fast the RDC-U evolved. “It has developed to its present position by coordinating, adjusting and giving resources across a wide range of equipment, from massive combat platforms all the way down to individual weapons,” said Bowman. Bowman, a mother, and wife, praises the teamwork at the RDC-U and the selfless service her Soldiers provided to work at all hours to quickly inspect, repair, and send items to Ukraine. Like Kim, Bowman and Beeman communicated with forward UAF by video chat and relayed the urgency and impact of maintenance support to Soldiers conducting repairs on equipment. All three shared the graphic video footage with mainte-
nance teams to convey the severity of the mission. “The situation really made us think about the struggles they were enduring,” said Beeman. Warrant Officer 1 David Hernandez, ground support equipment technician, 317th Support Maintenance Company, 18th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, was honored to help Ukraine’s readiness by repairing and providing maintenance support for wheeled vehicles. “I am proud of our accomplishment in revolutionizing support for our allied partners,” said Hernandez. Originally from Butterfield, Minnesota, Hernandez rotated twice to the RDC-U in October and March. He explained a vivid memory of receiving video footage from UAF with a destroyed vehicle and a request for a replacement. Upon receiving the replacement vehicle, he relayed the information back to UAF and witnessed the expression of relief and thankfulness from the UAF member. Hernandez felt an immediate connection to his partners and the fight they were supporting. This was the case for most Service Members. When repairs were complete and equipment was back in the fight it triggered a sense of accomplishment and joy. “They show a lot of gratitude for the support they get,” said Beeman. “We found ourselves deeply immersed in and attached to this mission. You
really want to give them the best chance at success.” Beeman joined the Army in 1999 and values military service and his career field. “We took on the mind set of what we would do in this situation if our lives depended on repairing this equipment,” said Beeman. According to Bowman, the RDC-U gave Service Members a sense of purpose and “Being part of this mission was the opportunity of a lifetime.” Soldiers providing remote maintenance to UAF forward troops to improve sustainment capabilities is one of the unlimited possibilities the Army offers allowing Soldiers the chance to a pursue their passions and explore new careers. “This has been a rewarding experience that will continue to evolve and support Ukraine Armed Forces in defending their nation,” said Beeman. The 21st Theater Sustainment Command executes mission command of operational sustainment across the European theater; conducts reception, staging, onward movement and integration; executes theater opening, theater distribution, and theater sustainment in support of U.S. European Command and NATO operations; and, as directed, executes joint security and support to U.S. Africa Command operations. The band partnered with the Angolan government as a way to celebrate the 48th anniversary of the nation’s independence, as well as using music to strengthen the partnership between the U.S. and Angola. “We are always looking for ways to strengthen our relationships here in Angola and for the USAFE band to be a part of that is something special,” said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Adhima Miller, the Senior Defense Official and Defense Attache in Angola. “U.S. music is integrated throughout Angolan culture, so this was a unique opportunity for the Angolans to see American musicians perform and play with them.” During the tour, the band performed for a range of Angolan government officials, military personnel and members of the general public, including students at the Arts School Complex (CEARTE) Polytechnic Institute of Art in Kilamba, Angola. “We had a great time performing for the students at the CEARTE academy. They were amazing. They played for us, we played for them and we played some things together at the end,” said Tech. Sgt. It’s warm and toasty inside, and besides what’s a couple extra pounds during sweater weather, right? We all know better. Fitness is just as important during winter as it is the rest of the year, but there are some extra precautions you should take to ensure your outdoor workout is safe. Follow these tips and you won’t have to play catch up when spring arrives.

2. Layers are your friends As strange as it may sound, sweat is the enemy when it comes to a healthy winter workout. The combination of chilly temperatures and moisture on your skin can make you that much colder. A single bulky jacket doesn’t provide enough flexibility as exercise heats your body and you start to sweat. Wear multiple layers that you can take off as you heat up and put back on as your body cools. The layer closest to your skin should be a material that draws moisture away, like polypropelene thermal gear. 3. Don’t forget to drink fluids You need to stay hydrated in the winter just as you do during warmer months. People often overlook the need for fluids during cold weather workouts
because the degree to which you’re sweating may be less noticeable under those layers. Drink water or sports drinks before, during and after your workout. Signs of dehydration can include dry or sticky mouth, low urine output, weakness or dizziness. If you experience any of these, discontinue your workout and get some fluids in your body quickly. 4. Protect your extremities When it’s cold out, your body automatically focuses blood flow on your core. It’s a defense mechanism to ensure the body’s main organs are sustained above all else. Unfortunately, that leaves your fingers, ears, nose and toes at increased risk for discomfort and potential damage. Wear gloves to keep your hands warm

5. Know the warning signs The biggest risks of working out in the cold are frostbite and hypothermia. Frostbite occurs when body tissues are exposed to
extreme cold for an extended period of time. Watch out for feelings of numbness or stinging sensations. Hypothermia occurs when your core body temperature drops below 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Early symptoms include slurred speech, intense shivering and loss of coordination. Both of these conditions are very harmful and should be attended to immediately. Candidates prepare gear and speak with one another about upcoming challenges they will face during the U.S. Army Europe Expert Infantryman, Expert Soldier and Expert Field Medical Badges, also known as E3B, Vilseck, Nov. 8. The E3B is designed to test candidates’ physical and mental abilities to increase unit readiness while executing critical individual and technical tasks while maintaining the integrity and history of each badge. The Expert Infantryman Badge was created in 1944 to honor the U.S. Army Infantrymen and serve as a symbol of their role in combat and proficiency in the Infantry arts. The Expert Field Medical Badge was established in 1965 for all officers, warrant officers and enlisted personnel in the Army Medical Department Corps as a method to show their high level of proficiency on the battlefield. The Expert Soldier Badge was established in 2019 on the Army’s 244th Birthday to highlight lethality and preparedness outside the Infantry, Special Operations and Medical branches. by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Most people have heard of the teddy bear, but did you know its origins stem from Germany? Margarete Steiff, the creator of the teddy bear, was born in Giengen, near Ulm in Baden-Württemberg, in 1847. She wrote the first chapter of an unprecedented success story with a pincushion in the shape of an elephant which further led to Teddy traveling to America. She was born as a cheerful and healthy baby but was infected with polio at an early age and challenged with spending her life in a wheelchair. Creative and positive-minded, her life motto was “Freedom is believing in yourself.” After a series of promising therapies, at the age of 17 she had to face the fact that she would spend her life handicapped. She decided to become a seamstress and her father established a sewing room within the house. There she began sewing ladies’ fashion, when one
day a traveling salesman came to town with a new and innovative invention from the United States, a mechanical sewing machine. Against all advice, she ordered the expensive machine which was soon to be delivered. Confronted with the fact that she couldn’t operate the foot pedal with her impaired legs, she quickly discovered the magic trick of turning the machine around, operating the wheel with her left hand and sewing backwards. She ordered further sewing machines and the salesman became a friend and frequent guest, which led Margarete to dream of tying the knot with him. Unfortunately, one day he confessed that he highly respected her, but was planning to marry elsewhere. Margarete was torn between drowning in self-pity and sorrow or funneling her pain into active energy by sewing day and night. Fortunately, she chose the latter and soon discovered the pattern of a small elephant in a fashion journal and decided to sew it in felt to be used as a pincushion.
The cushions sold like hot cakes and to her own surprise, small children were fascinated and used them as toys. This again inspired her to manufacture other toy animals and consequently open her own business in 1893, while hiring a number of seamstresses for help. Her successful toys were presented at the Leipzig Toy Fair and the first international business relationship with Harrods, London, was established in 1895. Her favorite nephew Richard, who had studied arts, joined the company with creative designs and new ideas. In 1902, Richard designed the “Bear 55 PB,” the world’s first plush bear with movable arms and legs and used cuddly mohair plush to make it soft and adorable. The bear was presented at the Leipzig Toy Fair where an American dealer discovered it, immediately fell in love with the adorable animal and ordered 3,000 on the spot. The good news first overwhelmed the small company, as the bears needed to be produced within a limited time, and ready for sales during the holiday season.
Again, Margarete and Richard were quick to react, enlarged the factory and staff and began 24-hour mass production to secure the deadline. The bear became a sensation in America, and it is said that none other than President Theodore Roosevelt was the name patron, who was nicknamed Teddy. In an effort to prevent others from copying the concept, the trademark “Steiff – Button in Ear” was created, which is still used today. By 1907 Steiff produced 1.7 million toys and 973,999 teddy bears with 400 employees and 1,800 home workers. Margarete died of pneumonia in 1909 as the head of a successful family-run business. Richard remained in the company and introduced assembly line production in the 1920’s and commenced cooperation with Disney in 1931. In the year 2000 an original Steiff bear produced 1912 was sold for the record amount of 150,212 Euros at Christie’s in London. The Steiff Museum in Giengen opened 2005
and Margarete Steiff was honored in the “Hall of Fame” of the toy industry 2020. Should you by chance discover a Steiff toy at your parent’s or grand parent’s house, cherish it as a treasure of Margarete’s legacy. Some large department stores in Germany present animated lifesize displays of Steiff animals in their decorated windows during the holiday season.

Here are five ideas to help you make the most of the holiday season in Kaiserslautern: 1. Take a night walk in the city Winter has the power to turn even the most active among us into hibernators. Fight the urge to sleep, especially when the sun goes down early! Fortunately, Kaiserslautern has some great hibernation antidotes. One of the best ones involves bundling up and walking around the city center after dark. It’s like a whole new city. Gaslights, street lights, and shop lights illuminate pedestrian plazas. During the Christmas season, you get an added bonus of beautiful illumination. Shopping isn’t required to make this a refreshing outing. Even if you’re only going to sneak peaks at shop windows, the time spent will be well worth it.

2. Check out the Christmas markets That’s right. Kaiserslautern has markets, as in plural, as in more than one. The Fruchthalle, in the city center, offers a large variety of vendors, goods, and goodies. There is also a smaller outdoor market nearby. This year, markets will be open through Dec. 23. There will also be a New Year’s Market from Dec. 27-30. In addition, lots of smaller villages surrounding Kaiserslautern offer their own Christmas markets. These include Otterberg, Johanniskreuz/Trippstadt, Falkenstein, Homburg and many, many others. Get out there and immerse yourself in the fantastic scented clouds of gingerbread and mulled wine!
3. Tour neighboring villages Speaking of KMC villages, many of them will be well worth your while, for a variety of reasons. Otterberg has a lovely downtown, an ancient church that’s worth a look, and a cute little plaza. Föckelberg offers incredible views of the surrounding area. Neuleiningen has an always-open castle, narrow winding streets, and breathtaking views of the Rhine Valley. The list goes on and on. If you live anywhere near Kaiserslautern, there are sure to be loads of hidden gems less than thirty minutes from your place. Ask your friends for tips. Ask your neighbors. Do a little research. And then start your visit!
4. Hit the forests German forests are excellent. Trails that wind through trees are outstanding for many reasons: the route stays the same, and the scenery changes every season. They’re never subject to travel restrictions. You can walk (almost) wherever you want. They’re free. And they give you hours and hours of fun and fresh air. You can get exercise, see new things, stumble across hidden treasures (like wild animals and great views). Forests are everywhere around Kaiserlsautern, and they rock.

5. Try out winter specialties So when you’re done braving the great
outdoors, there’s also this: Germans know how to eat well and drink well during the holidays. If you haven’t done so already, join them. Put down those microwave taquitos and frozen pizzas. Save that run to the food court. Find a butcher’s shop, a bakery, a farmer’s market or a Christmas market. Start simple by looking up German recipes online. Discover mulled wine, or Pfalz wine, or German beer. Buy a bottle of sprudel and learn to love the bubbles. Kaiserslautern has all of these things, in spades. If you’re going to stay local during the holidays, don’t be afraid to try living like a local. It makes the season all the more magical!

Largest Disc Golf Course in Germany The Rolling Hills Golf Course has the largest disc golf course in Germany. The Rolling Hills Disc Golf Course is in Bldg. 8888 on Wetzel Kaserne about five minutes from Smith Barracks. Disc Golf is like playing golf only with a frisbee instead of clubs. Frisbees are available to rent or buy, and a round of 18 holes of disc golf is only $8. Download the U-Disc app on your phone to see the whole course.
