Warrior ethos is traditionally used to describe battlefield Airmen, however, a military postal clerk assigned to the 86th Mission Support Group proved that the ethos can grow in unexpected places.

U.S. Air Force Airman Emma Gantner, 786th Force Support Squadron military postal clerk, recently earned a gold German Armed Forces Military Proficiency Badge, obtaining an overall score of A+++.

The GAFPB is a decoration of the Bundeswehr, the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Germany, and is one of few foreign military badges authorized to be worn by U.S. Air Force, Army, and Space Force members.

Gantner was one of 22 GAFPB recipients from multiple NATO countries and was the only woman to participate in this round of testing.

The holidays are great for spending time with loved ones, having special meals and relaxing by the fireside — or playing a few games with some air fried pizza rolls.

There’s no specific template that makes for a happy holiday, yet every year many service members feel spiritless during the holiday season. It’s not without hope, however — there are helpful activities that can be done as well as resources available to every service member.

“Stay active,” said Staff Sgt. Nelson Pacheco, 86th Operational Medical Readiness Squadron noncommissioned officer in charge of deployment medicine. “I do enjoy my peace and quiet, but around the holiday time when you see that change in the weather and it gets darker earlier, I try to hang out with friends and go to the gym more.”

According to The National Center for Biotechnology Information, studies have positively linked exercise and improved mental health, citing aerobic exercises such as jogging, swimming, walking, and even gardening as beneficial to an individual’s mental well-being.

“Last year, my wife had to leave to support Operation Allies Refuge,” said Staff Sgt. Kelvin Brown, 86th OMRS epidemiology manager. “For Thanksgiving, I ended up going to my supervisor’s house — a bunch of us got together and talked, joked and ate food. Things like getting together are important for combating loneliness during the holidays.”

Airmen have other resources available, such as joining one of the various clubs on base, speaking to a chaplain, or contacting Military and Family Life Counseling.

“We have eight embedded MFLCs for the base,” said Master Sgt. Hollius Holt, Family Readiness

senior noncommissioned officer at the Ramstein Military and Family Readiness Center. “They’re available 24 hours a day; if someone is in need, they can call.”

The Military and Family Readiness Center also hosts LIFE talks every first and third Monday of the month at 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. These talks are open to everyone and provide a safe space to talk about anything a member may be going through.

“It was challenging, but I got to meet many new people and experience new things,” said Gantner. “I would encourage women to participate in the future. It will be hard, but if you put your mind to it, you can do anything.”

In order to earn and wear a gold, silver or bronze German Armed Force Proficiency Badge on their service dress uniform, service members must complete five events ranging from a swim to a run and First Aid Test within the allotted time.

“The test pushes people to another level,” said German Armed Forces Senior Master Sgt. Benjamin Angel, German Support Unit training noncommissioned officer. “The GAFPB is about the total package of military skills — both mental and physical fitness.”

Testing for the GAFPB must be administered by a qualified German physical training instructor, and this is provided by the German Support Unit on Ramstein.

“Our 86th Security Forces Squadron defenders have a great relationship with the German Support Unit, and we wanted to expand that relationship,” said Chief Master Sgt. John Chacon, 86th MSG Senior Enlisted Leader.

“We had Airmen from different Air Force Specialty Codes that jumped at the opportunity to participate.

Our intent was to get our Airmen out of their comfort zone.”

Each event requires agility, endurance, strength, and mental toughness and tests participants overall abilities as warfighters.

“I am so proud of Airman Gantner for achieving her goals and earning the gold GAFPB, and equally proud of every graduate because of their resilience and grit to complete the physically and mentally challenging course,” said Col. Amy Glisson, 86th MSG commander. “We have built these friendships with our German allies, and these opportunities are forged through friendship. This test is just one of the ways we are in the fight together.”

Gantner’s accomplishment is

a true reflection of being ATLAS Strong, in line with the 86th MSG motto, Chacon explained.

“The ‘S’ in ATLAS stands for Share our Story,” Chacon said.

“Part of our story is that we are more than your traditional support functions, we are warriors that will get the job done no matter what.”

Not only do participants earn a badge as a point of pride, the GAFPB also contributes toward mutual international understanding, Angel mentioned

“Participating in a GAFPB event lets our Allies know what we bring to the fight, and in turn allows us to see what they bring and become comrades-in-arms at the same time,” said Chacon. “Establishing these friendships with our Allies,

not only builds lasting bonds while in Germany, but carries over throughout our careers. We are warfighters and we are training to be on the battlefield together.”

A ceremony was held Dec. 5, to present gold, silver or bronze badges to participants for their achievements during the three-day test.

Chacon encourages Ramstein military members to be ATLAS STRONG and test their warrior ethos during future course offerings.

“If anyone is interested in the GAFPB or German Marksmanship course keep an eye out this spring and get in touch with their unit Senior Enlisted Leader,” he said. “There will be more opportunities in the future.”

Find your P.E.A.C.E this holiday season

For many, the holidays are a time for love, fellowship, and good spirits, but this may not be the case for individuals who have experienced some type of adversity prior to the start of the season. Traumatic losses such as the death of a loved one, serious illness or injury, or loss of stability can have a profound effect on one’s mental, physical, and spiritual health. Coping with the negative emotions and feelings generated by losses may be exacerbated during the holidays because of the societal pressure to be happy and surrounded by family during the holiday season. Though it may seem far-fetched, there are ways to cope with loss during the holidays. Navigating the seas of disparity to the island of optimism and serenity can be accomplished by adhering to the P.E.A.C.E principle:

PPut your needs first. During this time of year it is so easy for others to make you feel as if you should negate your pain for the greater good, so as not to dampen the spirits of those around you. This will not help you express your hurt and sorrow and may have consequences later in the form of negative health outcomes, further isolation, or sometimes even worse. Your feelings are valid, and expression of your feelings is not abnormal. Do not let others pressure you into participating in events or festivities unless you feel that you are ready. Grief is a process that must run its course and it does not adhere to a holiday schedule.

EExperiment with innovative ideas and traditions. This is the perfect time for you to create some new experiences and traditions for yourself while abandoning ones

that may no longer feel appropriate or necessary. Consider doing something unorthodox such as going on a holiday vacation, visiting a restaurant for holiday meals, or abandoning the dreaded holiday sweater photo!

AAllow yourself some healthy distractions. Exercise has proven to be, not only an excellent anecdote for physical health, but mental health as well. Flooding the body with natural mood boosters will elevate your mood and help your feel better. Watching a favorite television program, attending a movie premiere with good friends, or catching a live sporting event are excellent distractions to lift your spirits.

CCommunity service is key. The sense of fulfillment that comes with helping others in need should never be underestimated. If you have ever volunteered to help others during the holidays, whether it be with a charitable organization, community service establishment, or religious activity, you will find that this type of work may not only help to quell negative thoughts and feelings but also give you a clearer perspective on the bleakness of your situation. The sense that you have given back to those less fortunate can elevate you to new levels.

EEmbrace the opportunity to grow. Emotional, physical, mental, intellectual and spiritual growth all have one thing in common: they are all fed by challenges. It may seem overwhelming to ponder at times but consider how you will grow as a person from your experience. Ask yourself, what can I do in the coming year to prepare for this next holiday season? How do I want next year to look for me this time? Where do I want to be as a person mentally and physically? Questions like these inspire one to chart a

clear path and set positive goals for themselves, which in turn builds on resiliency and strength.

There are a number of resources available to help those who are having problems coping with the stress of the season. Army Community Services, Military Family Life Counselors, online support groups, behavioral health and crisis hotlines such as the Military Crisis Line (00800 1273 8255) are agencies and resources that are there to help someone who is having a difficult time.

Finding the “silver lining” while coping with loss may seem like a daunting task, but it can be accomplished with support from family and community interventions. These are vital resources because they help us find the light when emotional pain dims our vison and clouds our sense of purpose. Positive communication and experiences help us recover and move forward to brighter horizons.

Being thankful enhances resiliency by allowing you to appreciate what you have and what you have accomplished rather than being mired down in disillusionment and hopelessness. If you can find thankfulness through adversity it strengthens the will and desire to move forward. Disillusionment and hopelessness leave one stuck and unable to see opportunities for happiness and growth.

Finding thankfulness is one of the most important elements of resiliency. I feel thankfulness gives us the presence of mind to understand that nothing in life is guaranteed and that we must find value in every day, even in times of loss. When we really value things, whether tangible or intangible, we want to protect them and appreciate them. This thought process goes a long way toward helping us cope in challenging times. Valuing other people, principles, or possessions can help us navigate life’s rough seas to a place of calm and peace.

RAB honors US, German government civilians

Nearly 140 U.S. and German civilians were recognized for their dedication to service during a length of service ceremony at Ramstein Air Base, Dec. 8.

Honorees received a certificate that thanked them for their longstanding employment with the U.S. government during the biannual event. U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Otis C. Jones, 86th Airlift Wing commander, expressed his gratitude to the honorees during the ceremony.

“I cannot overstate the value of our civilian workforce, especially in an overseas environment,” said Jones. “There are decades of expertise in this room today. You are foundational to what we do and bring stability to an otherwise ever-changing environment. I am humbled by your spirit of service, and I am impressed with the dedication and loyalty that you display everyday to our mission.”

The honorees’ lengths of service ranged from 20 to 45 years. Karl Kneip, 86th Civil Engineer Squadron inspector contract maintenance, said he reflects fondly of his time working for Team Ramstein.

“I started working on RAB in December 1977 as a butcher in the Commissary,” said Kneip. “Six months later I changed to a supply clerk with Housing Management, which is now the Furnishings Management Section. I have served all military and civilian personnel here, from Airmen to high ranking officers. It has always been an honor for me to work for the U.S. government.”

2. The 86th MXS NDI flight is one of the smallest units in their squadron, but is still responsible for inspections on all base and transient aircraft.

Writing history: 521 AMOW historian wins AF-level program award

521st Air Mobility Operations Wing

On Oct. 31, 2021, the 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing concluded the end of a significant historical chapter: the last Afghan evacuees depart Ramstein Air Base.

While some 521st AMOW locations and Airmen continued to support further evacuation efforts, the surge had ended.

But the work was just beginning for Dr. Andrew Wackerfuss, 521st AMOW historian.

Wackerfuss would spend the next six months conducting interviews, collecting data, archiving email and group chat traffic, establishing a chronology and, ultimately, writing the official history of the 521st AMOW support to the largest non-combatant airlift evacuation in U.S. history.

Wackerfuss collected interviews from 65 members totaling thousands of minutes of first-hand, ground truth perspectives on the operation.

In April, Wackerfuss proudly submitted his 74-page chapter

encompassing the wing’s efforts starting in the spring of 2021 with the Afghanistan Retrograde through Operation ALLIES WELCOME.

The chapter from the 521st AMOW was compiled with inputs from Wackerfuss’ colleagues across the U.S. Air Force Expeditionary Center and Air Mobility Command enterprise.

The collective team of AMC historians won the 2021 Excellence in Wartime or Contingency History Award, and the USAF EC won the 2021 Excellence in History Program Award for the numbered Air Force, Center, or Laboratory Level.

The AMC study was submitted to the Air Force History and Museums Program to form the backbone of the entire USAF official history.

“Normally we Air Force historians spend a lot of time in the trenches documenting our units’ activities and these form our internal archives, but rarely does it become a product of this scale,” Wackerfuss said. “As a program I think this is something we can be really proud of.”

The official history cements the command’s accomplishments.

“For air mobility it was a success story. It was a big hero moment,” he said. “We got 124,000 people airlifted out of a single location in two weeks. It’s unheard of. When faced with that challenge, we crushed it. It’s nice, with a little bit of distance and perspective to tell that story and hopefully get people to realize that what the Airmen did on the ground and in the air those two weeks was absolutely heroic.”

Wackerfuss was deployed to U.S. Air Forces Central, Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina, when the evacuation began. As the 521st AMOW’s role became ever more apparent, USAFCENT and AMC cleared him to return to Ramstein.

“It was killing me not to be here with everyone,” he said.

He quickly completed a return trip home and jumped right into the action.

Wackerfuss immediately identified key players who were able to catch him up on the events specific to the wing up to that point.

“You have to find the people who are going to be able to tell you beyond the documents what is going on. A core part of the historian’s job is collecting documents, but documents will never tell you the full story of what it was like as a person to perform this operation,” he said. “It was really fulfilling and really emotional to do these interviews. I always tried to be respectful of that and show to them how appreciative I was of their openness to share their stories.”

Wackerfuss’ timely return was critical to retain and organize the heavy influx of information circulating during the operation and his work in the months afterwards captured the human-side of the story and provided a cathartic outlet for those involved.

“Everyone was so focused on the core mission of getting people out, moving people around, caring for them, and providing for them that they didn’t have time to document… it was just go, go, go,” Wackerfuss said. “Having a historian on staff gives you a dedicated person whose job it is to do that, undistracted, it’s not an additional duty, it is their core function. If you don’t have that you will literally never know what happened.”

Wackerfuss has been with the 521st AMOW since November 2018. During his time in the wing, he has documented other historic events including the unit’s role in keeping the global air mobility support system moving during the onset and height of the Coronavirus Pandemic, the first operational uses of the Transport Isolation System and Negatively Pressurized Conex, the Afghanistan Retrograde, Operation FLY FORMULA, and ongoing support to Ukraine.

“Dr. Wackerfuss answered the call,” said Col. Dan Cooley, 521st AMOW commander. “When you have a winning team like the 521st AMOW, the value the historian brings is unmatched. His diligent efforts preserve corporate knowledge to tell the full story of our victories and improve upon them.”

Prior to joining the 521st AMOW, Wackerfuss served as an Air Force historian for nearly 12 years in four different positions including the Historical Support Office, Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, Washington, D.C.; the 436th Airlift Wing, Dover Air Force Base, Delaware; and Headquarters Air National Guard, Joint Base Andrews, Maryland. His academic background is in German history which motivated him to find an opportunity to serve in Europe.

“It’s a fascinating mission,” Wackerfuss said about the 521st AMOW. “It really has been everything I hoped it would be, both personally to have the opportunity to live here again, but also it’s really fulfilling to be back at the wing level of operational history to really be connected to the mission as it progresses day to day and the ground experiences of the Airmen who carry it out.”

The Air Force historian corps conducts and manages history programs across the full range of military operations in peacetime and war to improve warfighter capabilities. By collecting, preserving, and interpreting the institutional memory of the Air Force, the historian corps provides commanders and decision makers an informed perspective based on accurate and factual information. This applied history approach leverages the lessons of the past to create usable knowledge that informs decisions today and the future.

The 21st Theater Sustainment Command transports troops, equipment and supplies throughout the European Theater, demonstrating U.S. flexibility, agility and ability. When it comes to in-transit visibility of cold, hard cash, 266th Finance Support Center adds ingenuity to that list.

While deployed to Camp Arifjan, Kuwait from June 2021 to February 2022, Maj. Jonathan Evans and Sgt. First Class Willie Cole were part of a Counter Threat Finance Fusion Cell charged with operationalizing the CTF concept. The U.S. Department of Defense defi nes CTF as “activities and capabilities designed to deny, disrupt, destroy, or defeat finance systems and networks that negatively affect U.S. interests.”

“We had the right group in the right location,” said Cole, who is now 21st Special Troops Battalion’s Headquarters and Headquarters Company First Sergeant. Along with Evans, the Fusion Cell also included Cpt. Devin Cook, now a student at the Captain’s Career Course.

According to Cole, the team had the winning formula of expertise in diverse financial systems, sensitive activity experience, fiscal knowledge, established relationships and necessary clearances needed to identify, gather and analyze information needed to prevent and disrupt adversaries’ ability to raise, use, move and store assets.

Evans said the team looked at how they could operationalize their data. “There was a lot of experimentation with economic

analysis, and from that, the term ‘fiscal preparation of the environment’ evolved,” said Evans.

According to Evans, fiscal preparation of the environment examines the economic and financial aspects of the operating environment that are likely to impact military operations. This data can help commanders and staffs make better-informed decisions and pre-

pare for key meetings.

“The CG [in Kuwait] had a number of mil to mil engagements and we did a one slider of just economic data for the countries he was visiting,” said Evans. “And we can contribute that here [at 21st TSC] for various projects.”

1st Lt. Ying Jiang works with Evans at 266th FISC as they continue to refine the work started in

Kuwait. She describes another CTF line of effort that prevents assets from flowing to adversaries — vendor vetting.

“Counter threat finance is relevant, because with cash, how do you really trace where the cash is going?” Jiang said. “When we do vendor vetting mitigation the point is really to prevent cash going into our enemy’s hand.”

“That includes identifying if key management personnel are aligned with bad actors, and if companies are truly owned by who they claim they are owned by. If we pump a lot of U.S. dollars into the country…..and if we are paying local vendors, that may have all sorts of effects,” said Jiang.

Cole said one of their first customers was “blown away” by the data they supplied. “We gave them information that they could use as evidence to support the intel side of the house. From an intel perspective, our financial information strengthened their case.”

The CTF team has partnered with U.S. Army fraud investigative units and regularly works with different entities such as Army Counter-Intelligence, Criminal Investigative Division, Military Intelligence and Non-Lethal

Effects work groups. They customize the information they package depending on their customers’ needs.

“From a counter intelligence standpoint, they need certain information,” said Cole. “From a straight up combatant commander information [perspective] looking at the intel side of the house, they need certain information. The fraud people need a different package. So trial and error, we were able to develop different packages based on customer needs.”

Evans cited the process of portselection as an example of how CTF can inform decision-making as 21st TSC conducts business throughout Europe and Africa, efficiently receiving, staging and transporting equipment and personnel throughout the two continents.

“As [21st TSC planners] look at different ports and what we are doing to support rotational units, being able to inform them on the economic status of that area and looking at beneficial ownership of companies we are doing business with now, gives them a better picture of the overall operating environment.”

Cole added that it is also important to follow up after the fact. “We pump millions and millions of dollars into that economy,” said Cole. “We want to be able to follow that money, basically by looking at the contract data. Money always moves with a purpose. It’s our job to inform and advise on the purpose.”

For 266th’FISC, accountability on the battlefield means knowing where the money is moving.

“Defense wins the championship,” said Jiang. “We are stewards of government funds and we want to make sure we are spending taxpayers’ money properly and legally and not paying the enemy.”

The team acknowledges 266th FISC Director Col. Lance Sneed for supporting their continuing efforts to demonstrate the value of finance and comptroller forces and make CTF accessible and easily integrated into command planning.

“Col. Sneed gives us all the freedom we need and the latitude to experiment and explore and see what works,” said Evans.

Jiang agreed, saying working on CTF is like working for a startup company.

“There’s no guaranteed future,” said Jiang. “You don’t know what tomorrow’s going to look like. It takes a lot of personal interest. To me the challenge is the excitement of the job. That’s why I wanted to join the team.”

Winter safety

Don’t let seasonal injuries affect your fitness and your readiness to complete your mission. Environmental fitness is a key component of Total Force Fitness. Make sure you are fit, prepared and able to perform required duties even in subzero temperatures, snow and wind. Cold weather, shoveling snow, winter sport injuries, slippery roads and many other winter hazards can put you on the injury report. Make good choices with your exercise and recreation in the winter, and take extra care with regular tasks made more dangerous by ice and snow.

Extreme Cold

Strenuous activity during cold weather can increase your risk of heart attack compared to temperate weather. Cold weather can cause blood vessels and arteries to constrict, making the heart work harder to pump blood. This can cause angina, or chest pain, that can also spread to the shoulders, arms, or neck. Strenuous activity out in the cold should be approached with caution, especially if you are not used to physical activity – this even includes things like shoveling snow, yard work, or exercise.

Preventing cold weather injuries

To prevent cold weather injuries:

• Make good choices about the rigor of your cold weather exercises and the clothing that you wear.

• Take extra care with regular tasks made more dangerous by ice and snow.

• Listen to your body: chest pain, lightheadedness, shortness of breath and dizziness mean that all activity should stop immediately and medical attention is necessary.

Exercising in Cold Weather

Exercising in cold weather poses other different risks than warm or temperate weather. Cold muscles can lead to injuries and your endurance can change.

• Be sure to stretch before exercising in the cold weather.

• Know your winter limits before you push them.

• Wear appropriate gear, or carry gloves, hats, extra socks, or an additional layer.

• Limit time outside in windy, wet, or extremely cold weather. Remember, if exertion is keeping your body temperature up, it can drop rapidly once you stop exercising.

Proper use of safety equipment minimizes the risk of serious brain injury.

• Staying mission ready means avoiding preventable injury and illness. Winter weather poses a risk to health that can be minimized with proper winter safety actions.

• Winter sports like skiing, hockey, and snowboarding are exhilarating, but high speeds carry a risk of injury, including brain injuries.

» Never ski or snowboard alone. Have a buddy who can help in the case of injury.

» Don’t try to perform beyond your ability. Don’t be stuck in the lodge tomorrow because you skied the black diamond today.

» Use the proper safety

equipment, especially a wellfitting helmet.

» Dress for the top of the mountain. It’s always colder than the bottom.

• Exercising in cold weather has some different risks than warm or temperate weather. When training in extreme cold, take additional precautions to avoid injuries that can affect readiness.

» Cold muscles can lead to injuries. Make sure you stretch before exercising in the cold.

» Your endurance can change in cold weather. Make sure you know your winter limits before you push them.

» Hypothermia and frostbite are

real concerns in extreme cold. Wear appropriate gear, carry gloves and hats, and limit time outside in windy, wet, or extremely cold weather.

• When wintery conditions make roads hazardous, slow down, leave more space between cars, and stay home if you don’t need to be on the road.

» Winterize your car – check tires and battery; replace wiper blades and fluid; ensure antifreeze levels are high; keep your gas tank half-full to prevent frozen lines; and keep extra batteries, flashlights, blankets and a first aid kit in your car.
