NATO begins largest exercise since Cold War

by Jim Garamone Department of Defense News Over the next six months, thousands of U.S. service members will participate in the largest NATO exercise since the end of the Cold War. Dubbed Exercise Steadfast Defender 24, it will feature about 90,000 service members from the 31 NATO allies and Sweden. It will test the ability of the alliance to quickly deploy forces and will test NATO’s new defense plans, officials said. “The alliance will demonstrate its ability to reinforce the Euro-Atlantic area via transAtlantic movement of forces from North America,” said Army Gen. Christopher G. Cavoli, NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander
Europe, in a press release. “Steadfast Defender 2024 will be a clear demonstration of our unity, strength and determination to protect each other, our values and the rules-based international order.” The first movement in the exercise began Jan. 24 as the dock landing ship USS Gunston Hall sailed from Norfolk, Virginia. Following a series of operations, the ship will sail across the Atlantic. The overall exercise will run through June. It is NATO’s principal multidomain exercise for 2024 and will consist of a series of national and multinational largescale, live exercises conducted across various geographical locations. Officials said Steadfast Defender is the largest exercise
since the last Reforger exercise in 1988. The exercise is the first, largescale test of alliance defense plans approved at last year’s Vilnius Summit in Lithuania. At its base, the exercise is a demonstration of alliance unity and determination to defend every inch of NATO territory. The exercise will demonstrate “NATO’s ability to deploy, move and use reinforcements from North America and other parts of the alliance to continental Europe,” alliance officials said. “It will show that we can conduct and sustain complex multidomain operations over several months, across thousands of kilometers, from the high north to central and Eastern Europe and in any conditions.”
The exercise will take place primarily in Finland, Estonia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Sweden and the United Kingdom, officials said. There will be more than 50 naval assets, including aircraft carriers, destroyers, frigates and corvettes. Air assets will include F-35s, FA-18s, Harriers, F-15s, helicopters and myriad unmanned aerial vehicles. There will also be more than 1,100 combat vehicles, including more than 150 tanks, 500 infantry fighting vehicles and 400 armored personnel carriers. Officials said the exercise is based on a fictitious Article 5 scenario “triggered by a fictitious attack against the alliance launched by a near-peer adversary,” officials said.

In an unpredictable security environment, we must remain ready to deter all threats and to defend all allies.” Still, Russia has launched the largest war in Europe since World War II, attacking neighboring Ukraine. Since Russia first invaded Ukraine in 2014, NATO has strengthened defense and deterrence on the continent. While Steadfast Defender has been in planned for years, the exercise incorporates defense plans based on Russia’s actions. “Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine will shape our understanding of conflict for years to come,” a NATO official said. “NATO is observing the conflict in Ukraine closely in order to improve our readiness and refine our future training, capabilities and innovation.”

LVIS gate reopens to POV traffic

Story and photo by Senior Airman Madelyn Keech 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Large Vehicle Inspection Site gate will reopen to personally owned vehicles during specific hours on weekdays at Ramstein Air Base, Feb. 5. The gate will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. for POV traffic Monday-Friday, and will be closed on weekends, as well as U.S. and German holidays. Drivers of POVs are required to use the left lane when entering the base, as the right lane is for commercial vehicle use only. To determine the best options for base access while balancing safety and security, the LVIS gate will be reopened to privatelyowned vehicles under a 90-day observation period. After the observation period, the commander will solicit input from leadership across
the base to determine adjustments to operating hours and procedures as needed. Commuters are reminded to exercise caution while using the LVIS gate, as the access road between L369 and the gate will also be used by large commercial vehicles. Due to this, the traffic safety working group has deemed the gate unsafe for pedestrians, to include bicycles, and they will not be permitted to use the LVIS gate at this time. “A traffic survey was completed by the 86th Security Forces Squadron, 786th Civil Engineer Squadron and 86th Airlift Wing safety office which showed there are traffic safety concerns for bicyclists and motorists on this [access] road,” said Master Sgt. Patrick Klein, 86th SFS installation security section chief. While the LVIS gate will help
alleviate traffic congestion, commuters should consider additional entry points such as the ROBMC gate, which typically has about six lanes open during peak hours to accommodate additional traffic. “We understand that there is a convenience for people who may want to use the LVIS Gate, but we would like to highlight that the ROBMC Gate is an amazing entrance area for personnel,” Klein said. On average, it takes between one and three minutes to enter the base through the ROBMC gate, while it can take up to 30 minutes to enter through the West gate during peak hours, he explained. LEAP: Shaping effective communication

Its varied mission sets are as diverse as the Airmen, allies and partners carrying them out. With so many gears turning, there are gaps that cannot be crossed without people with the necessary skills to bridge the divide between cultures. The skilled Airmen employing this come from the Language Enabled Airman Program. LEAP is a program designed to teach Airmen the importance of cultural relations and language while operating in overseas environments with foreign partners.
“The U.S. Air Force is an intricate system of many moving parts, each essential and pivotal in creating a united, competent, and lethal force,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Moshood Yinusa, U.S. Air Forces in Africa 435th Air Expeditionary Wing Plans Office officer in charge. “To ensure successful operations within our organization, we continuously strive to improve our initiative and ability to manage resources, lead people, improve the unit, and execute our missions.” One such initiative is LEAP, a strategic program created to develop multi-capable Airmen with cultural competency to help provide a competitive advantage in the modern global environ-
ment where effective communication is essential to mission success. The Language Regional Expertise and Culture symposium highlighted the importance of cultural competency and language proficiency in the military. It provided a platform for LEAP participants to share their experiences, best practices, and recommendations, which include making LEAP an integrated element in the design of the U.S. Air Force’s structure. Airmen listened to lectures from speakers with a wealth of experience from working abroad with allies and partners. “I witnessed firsthand how imperative language and cultural
skills are in tandem with the vital role they play within our military,” said 1st Lt. Sydnee Ramsey, 86th Communications Squadron Communications Focal Point OIC. “We were presented various echelons of research with solid data proving how these skills can act as a catalyst or without the skills to be the detriment of future operations and campaigns.” According to the U.S. National Security Strategy states the U.S. unrivaled network of allies and partners protects and advances our interests around the world— and is the envy U.S adversaries. LEAP graduates secure U.S. interests around the globe and help highlight the importance of diversity and partnerships.
“The networking opportunities this conference provided were invaluable,” Ramsey said. “It left a lasting impression on me regarding how valuable LEAP scholars are: This takes buy-in from all levels of leadership, and it is our duty as scholars to effectively shape that narrative. This is a necessary component that should be of utmost importance for any missions.” LEAP is open to Active-Duty officers and enlisted and is available to most Air Force careers fields. The purpose of the job swap was to have Airmen with similar ranks learn valuable lessons from each other and become more competent leaders. “I love to meet new people, so I jumped at the opportunity,” said Airman 1st Class Cristian CastroMendoza, 86th Airlift Wing Judge Advocates Office paralegal. “There
are so many jobs in the Air Force, and it is great to see how they contribute to the mission.” Chances like these can be hard to come by, but for El-Amin it is about strengthening his career and giving him a new outlook. “I want this to help me grow as an Airmen and open new doors for me,” El-Amin said. “I want to gain new perspectives on the other jobs around the Air Force and this is one of the best ways for me to do it.” The Air Force offers over 200 careers to its members, both enlisted and officers. Visiting each other’s work centers allowed El-Amin and Castro-Mendoza to see if they might be interested in cross training to a career field that may suit them better. “I like my job, but there are so many others in the Air Force,” Castro-Mendoza said. “This gives

me the chance to see what it is like in other work centers, gain an understanding of what they do, and see if it suits me.” Lt. Col. Joshua Mann, 86th Comptroller Squadron commander, talked about how important it is for Airmen to know other jobs. Each mission is dependent on one another. “This is a great opportunity for our Airmen to take advantage of,” said Mann. “I saw success with this program at other bases and wanted to bring it here. It can get people in an office setting out and working outside, or vice versa. Whether it is part of the Multi-Capable Airmen initiative or a cross training opportunity, I think it is important for Airmen to see a more diverse mission set than the one they are currently part of.” Job swaps are a great way to learn from others and this will not be the only one offered to Airmen. El-Amin shared why he thinks this is a good opportunity for others to learn more about the Air Force and what their fellow Airmen do to contribute to the overall success of the Air Force mission. “I would recommend this to other Airmen because it is nice to break the mold and get excited about new opportunities,” El-Amin said. “I would say for Airmen to ask their superiors for the chance to pursue this. Get out of the office and into the bigger Air Force to see what it has to offer. This is an opportunity for growth, and I challenge others to seek it out.” Airmen seeking job swap opportunities should work through their chain of command.

21st TSC captain awarded Order of the Marechaussee

Ronald Ragin, commanding general of the 21st TSC, and Command Sgt. Maj. Kofie Primus, senior enlisted advisor to the 21st TSC, Panzer Kaserne, Jan. 26. Budner was awarded the Steel Order of The Marechaussee and is one of only 167 people to receive the award. “I think giving out awards like this is an honor, it’s thanks to you and the great officers and NCOs that are standing behind you. It truly is an honor to present this,” said Maj. Gen. Ronald Ragin, commanding general of the 21st TSC.

Budner was the former 554th Military Police Company Commander and is now the current operation officer for the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, Theater Movement Center. The award is one of the highest honors bestowed upon a military police officer in the Military Police Regimental Association. It is named after the Marechaussee Corps, formed in 1778 at Valley Forge by Gen. George Washington to police the Army and secure fugi-
tives. There are four categories of the Order of Marechaussee: Gold, Silver, Bronze and Steel. “I would ask you to not take this award lightly,” said Maj. Gen. Ronald Ragin, 21st Theater Sustainment Command Commanding General. “I think giving out awards like this is an honor, it’s thanks to you and the great officers and NCOs that are standing behind you. It truly is an honor to present this.” To be eligible for this award, Budner was required to have less than ten years of service, shown outstanding support to the regiment and have supported more than one element of the Military Police Regiment. Budner’s accomplishments towards this award included plan-

Additionally, she performed all law enforcement operations for U.S. Army Stuttgart along with support missions for U.S. European Command and U.S. Africa Command. “It feels amazing, and I’m completely honored to earn this award. The Marechaussee is an MP Corps award that honors those who’ve contributed to a regiment, and to be even considered as somebody who’s contributed truly means a lot,” said Budner. “Some people see the MP Corps as just the big establishment at Fort Leonard Wood, but to me the Corps comes from the enlisted, NCO’s and officers who serve in it every single day.”

The GREATest BRITAIN road trip, Part 3: Wales
Snowdonia National Park, North Wales.
Wales is one of those countries that people tend to forget exists, which is a real shame. I admit, before my first trip there a few years back, I had no clue where it was, what it was and that it boasted such stunning national parks. But now that I am the wiser, I did not want you to miss out on this underrated little country west of England. From cozy cities to sandy beaches, mountains ranges, lakes and the smallest house in Great Britain- Wales has got it all. Unfortunately the language looks as if someone sat on a keyboard and just went with it but every street sign and landmark is available in English as well. Fun fact: As you drive further into the country, you will notice that the signs switch from English first to Welsh first and you will be more likely to hear someone speak it in every day situations.
Its comparatively small size is perfect for a one to two week round trip. Find some must-sees below, sorted by location headed north.

Barry’s Island Start your round trip with a relaxing day by the beach on Barry’s Island. There you will find the best fries, ‘chips,’ in Wales, an arcade, a plain old beach with blue water and low cliffs to dive in from. On gloomy days, it has an eerie atmosphere to it but we later found out that a serial killer insisted his ashes were spread there so maybe that’s responsible for it. Brecon Beacons Brecon Beacons is a hiker’s paradise but can also be discovered via houseboat (a dream of mine I have yet to cross off my bucket list) or mountain bike. The Central Beacons is the highest mountain range in Southern Great Britain and the entire parks spans 520 miles altogether- that’s a lot of space to (quite literally) dive into nature. The park offers walks and hikes for all levels of ability with

beautiful and diverse sceneries from old red sandstone to carboniferous limestone, wooded gorges, caves and waterfalls. The meadows in the lowlands are juicy green and specked with happy sheep. Check out their website for info on hiking routes and more. Don’t forget to visit Brecon, a thriving market town that has fantastic brownies, an art gallery, romantic canals, a little castle and
a large Morrisons (supermarket) to get you prepped for the hikes ahead. Snowdonia Snowdonia National Park in the north of Wales is famous for being one of Britain’s ‘breathing spaces.’ 9 mountain ranges, some peaking at more than 3,000 ft., cover half the park and attract approximately 6 million visitors
every year. The landscape varies between lakes, mountains, waterfalls, valleys and so much more. Just like Brecon Beacons, it’s the perfect spot for hiking, cycling and other nature activities helping you rewind far away from the troubles of daily life. Hiking Mount Snowdon is a circa 4-hour round trip if you park at Pen-y-Pass Car Park, right in front the youth hostel. Parking

Llandudno Llandudno in the north is the perfect seaside town and one of the largest in the country. It offers offers excellent opportunities to go shopping, stroll along the beach, eat fresh mini donuts at the California-esque pier or explore some more nature. A cable
Conwy Conwy is a cozy little World Heritage town on the north coast only 15 minutes from Llandudno. While there might not be enough to do for a week’s stay, it’s certainly worth driving through, if only to visit the smallest house in Great Britain, which looks normal-sized without any humans to compare it to but trust me, it’s tiny. Conwy also has palm trees and a patisserie I sometimes consider driving back for. Yes, driving to Wales just for a pastry and then back home for work the next morning. I haven’t done it yet but the raspberry cheesecake would be worth it. A string of well-preserved walls wrap themselves around narrow streets stuffed with historic buildings and a brooding medieval castle. Llanberis Llanberis is at the foot of Snowdon, merely a 12-minute drive from the Snowdon parking lot. A little train takes you on a round trip along one side of the stunning lake. On the way back, you can get off one stop early and visit the free Slate Mining Museum featuring replicas of miners’ houses, coal mines, a blacksmith workshop and much more to give an insight into the miners’ daily lives.

The biggest flea and antique market in southwest Germany, takes place on the first Saturday of the month, in the area known as the Forum, in front of the Homburg Rathaus (town hall) and the Landratsamt. The flea market was launched in 1975 by the Werbegemeinschaft Homburg e.V. and has developed into the largest in southwest Germany. On peak days in the summer, 1,500 traders offer their wares and attract thousands of visitors to Homburg. The flea market has become the top address for customers from France, Luxembourg and Belgium, among others. All this makes it a tourist attraction. by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Since 1953 more than 56,000 babies of U.S. or German-American parents were born in Landstuhl. Primarily at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center or otherwise at Nardini Klinikum/St. Johannis Hospital. According to the Registry Office Landstuhl, there were 761 in 2021, 758 in 2022 and 667 in 2023, averaging a little over two newborns per day. Some of these children visited Department of Defense Education Activities schools, eventually moved to the U.S. with their parents or remained in country. Many of them later joined the Armed Forces themselves and returned on a tour back to their roots. Others remained in the U.S., pursued civilian lives and careers in politics, the medical field, scientific research, in the broadcasting and show business or as sports stars. We would like to present a few people born in Landstuhl who eventually became rather famous in their various fields. You may already be familiar with some of them, but take the opportunity to get to know a few more. A virologist, an anthropologist, a politician and a biologist To start off, Jeffrey Taubenberger, a prominent virologist was born in 1961. Together with another scientist, he was the first to sequence the genome of the influenza virus which caused the 1918 pandemic called the Spanish Flu. This is a process of determining the entirety of the DNA sequence of an organism’s genome at a single time. Richard McElreath, born in 1973, became a Professor of Anthropology and is now the Director of Human Behavior, Ecology and Culture at the Max Planck Institute for
Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany. On the other hand, David Cheston Rouzer, born in 1972, pursued a career in politics and since January 2015 he has represented the State of North Carolina as a Republican. Joseph Regan was born of American parents in 1965. He spent his early years in Germany, attended schools at Ramstein Air Base to then relocate to the U.S. He became a biologist and worked as a contractor in Heidelberg for several years. He later moved to Kentucky, works as a laser defense specialist for the U.S. government and loves practicing his German while traveling. Life is a ballgame Some sports heroes may be better known, such as Rob Awalt, born in 1964. He was a tight end American football player for the National Football League for seven years and then drafted to the Phoenix Cardinals. In 1990 he switched to the Dallas Cowboys, then to the Buffalo Bills and played in the Super Bowls in the years 1992 and 1993. Reggie Williams is another well-known American football player born in 1983. He played wide receiver for the Jacksonville Jaguars in the National Football League. He had his best professional season in 2007 with 38 catches for 629 yards and 11 touchdowns. In addition to his sports career, he majored in psychology. Shawn Bradley, born in 1972 as son of a U.S. soldier and German mother, became a prominent basketball player. From 1993 to 2005 he played in 875 games in the National Basketball Association, mainly for the Dallas Mavericks. At a height of 2.29 m (7.5 ft) he is one of the tallest players ever and finally ended his sports career after an accident in 2021. Josh Wicks, born in 1983, began his soccer career with the Vancouver Whitecaps in the
United Soccer League First Division. He then switched to the Portland Timbers. In later years he played in several soccer teams in Finland, Sweden and Iceland, leading the teams to various championships. The youngest sports star was born in 1991. Aaron Samuel Altherr, was born as the son of an American active-duty mother and a German father, who was a soccer player. Although he had a talent for both soccer and basketball, he opted for baseball in his late high school years. He then played on various U.S. teams and due to his country of origin, Altherr was qualified to successfully compete in the German National Baseball Team in the year 2013. Landstuhl rocks On another key, Rob Kelly Thomas was born in 1972. At the age of 13 he decided to become a rock star and visited his first Genesis concert during the “Invisible Touch Tour.” He was the lead singer of the rock band Match Box Twenty. His first success as a solo artist was in 1999 with the single “Smooth” in conjunction with Santana, which made it to first place in the U.S. billboard charts. In 2001 he was entered into the South Carolina Music and Entertainment Award Hall of Fame as the youngest artist ever. There’s no business like show business Heather De Lisle, born in 1976, is the daughter of American Armed Forces Network (AFN) DJ Rik De Lisle, and mainly grew up in West Berlin. Her first public moderation was at AFN Berlin at the age of 15 and she was first on television at the age of 18. When AFN Berlin closed in 1995 she worked for “Deutsche Welle” and since the year 2000 she has been a foreign correspondent for ABC News radio New York reporting from Berlin. She also featured in numerous German political talk shows.
OHA survey empowers KMC service members by Airman 1st Class Trevor Calvert 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs An Overseas Housing Allowance and Utility Expense Survey is open from Jan. 1 to March 31 by the Department of Defense and the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness Military Compensation Policy Directorate. The survey collects data from uniformed service members stationed overseas and living in private housing about utilities and recurring maintenance expenses. Approximately 44 percent of members in the Kaiserslautern Military Community took the survey in 2023 and the feedback caused an increase in utility allotments of 10 percent.
The television series “Roots” in the late 1970s and several Star Trek series and movies awarded fame to Le Var Burton, born as Levardis Robert Burton in 1957, as the last of our celebrities. Burton is not only a famous actor, but was also host to the PBS Kids educational television series called “Reading Rainbow“ for more than 23 years (1983 – 2006). Older readers may recall his role as “Kunta Kinte“ in the series “Roots“ in which he played a slave in the southern states in the 1860’s. Younger folks may better know him as Geordi La Forge in Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987 – 1994) and various other movies.
KMC members who receive OHA, live in privately leased housing, and have been stationed in Germany for over 6 months are eligible to take the survey. The results of the survey will have an impact on future utility and OHA rates. The survey is optional and requires approximately 15 minutes to complete and should be done by a service member or a spouse with knowledge on their home expenses. Spending time to accurately take the survey allows the DOD to set equitable OHA rates for service members. Hafenwelten in Bremerhaven
The old harbor is full of historic vessels to admire.
Story and photos by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Anyone that has moved to Germany will sooner or later hit upon the term “Bremerhaven,” either in conjunction with a vehicle being shipped there or household goods arriving at the port. Some may have personally traveled to the city at the mouth of the Weser River to pick up or deliver a car. The U.S. Army also utilizes a separate section of the port to bring in equipment and heavy vehicles. The joint port “BremenBremerhaven” is Germany’s second largest port after Hamburg. One of the eight terminals is the Vehicle Terminal that handles up to two million vehicles a year, including many thousands of DOD members’ POVs arriving from or departing to the United States. In addition to cars and ships, Bremerhaven also has a world of wonders at its “Hafenwelten” (harbor worlds). Emigration changed the world Another very exciting terminal is the Columbus Cruise center, one of the most modern cruise ship terminals in the world. Ships from around the globe dock there to continue onto voyages in Scandinavia or across the Atlantic Ocean. The terminal also has a long tradition of being one of the busiest ports for emigration to the United States in the 19th and 20th centuries and is Visitors can meet researchers at an icy camp in Antarctica.

With a sharp increase of European emigrants seeking their fortunes in the New World in the mid 1850s, the port in Bremen became too small and Columbus Kai was opened in Bremerhaven in 1854. Millions of European emigrants left the port with hopes and dreams of a better life on the opposite side of the Atlantic Ocean and shaped the future of the United States. Trace your roots at the Emigration Center According to a 2020 census 191 million Americans, making up 57 percent of the population, have European roots. The largest group at 17 percent are said to be descendants of Germans, followed by Irish and Italians. The “Deutsches Auswandererhaus” (German Emigration Center) opened its doors in 2005 at the exact spot where emigrants began their voyage, the first center in Germany to focus on emigration. The center holds ship manifests of over 7.2 million passengers from 1830 to 1974 and is currently digitalizing the records for further reference. Their destinations were Buenos Aires, Argentina and Sydney, Australia, but over 75 percent emigrated to the United States. Although not every German departed from Bremerhaven, approximately five million Germans alone set sail bound for the New World, among them over 500,000
from the Rheinland-Pfalz region. Other emigrants that embarked in Bremerhaven came from The Netherlands, Scandinavia and eastern European countries. To name a few, Albert Einstein, best known for his theory of relativity, Henry Kissinger, former Secretary of State, and Joseph Pulitzer, famous journalist and politician, who also funded the Statue of Liberty pedestal, are famous emigrants. Isidor Straus, originally from Otterberg in Kaiserslautern County, became coowner of Macy’s department store in New York City. If you expect this museum to be an old-fashioned library full of illegible, dust covered records, you couldn’t be more mistaken. It is, in fact, a multimedia center with interactive elements that will let you discover the world with new eyes. For example, you can board an emigrant ship, touch and feel the confinement of a typical windowless cabin full of wooden berths. Third class passengers were put in cabins with five people to a berth and up to 20 berths per cabin. On the other hand, first class passengers were pampered in luxurious suites, with fine porcelain, silver dish ware and dance parties on deck. You can tackle the storms of the rough North Atlantic Ocean on a rolling ship, to finally be greeted by the Statue of Liberty on Ellis Island after a twoto-five-week perilous voyage. You can embark on a journey in time and wander the row of shops

Climate around the world If you are not tired of traveling the seven seas and yet ready for more discoveries, a visit to the nearby “Klimahaus” (Climate House) will take you on an overland trip around the world along the eighth longitude. The ship-shaped center is a mixture between a science center and a theme park and will give you astonishing insights into our planet’s climate, weather and climate change. Under the slogan
“Nine places, five continents, one planet and your responsibility,” the center will take you on an exciting adventure. A series of climatized rooms will lead you to destinations where you can feel, touch, hear and see wonders of our planet. Visitors can experience the varying climate, temperatures and people telling stories of their daily lives and how they tackle climate change. The journey sets off at Bremerhaven southbound to reach Switzerland, its Alpine climate and melting glaciers. It continues to the small Mediterranean island of Sardinia with five different climate zones. There you can view the world from the eyes (and size) of a grasshopper. The trip continues on to the barren and hot desert sands of Niger, where Tuareg nomads describe the hardships of their daily lives. Enjoy a stroll in the rainforest in Cameroon and meet its human and many animal inhabitants. The next stop on the journey leads you to the endless ice of Antarctica where you can meet researchers at a polar station. Traveling northward again a giant sea aquarium welcomes visitors in Samoa to see colorful corals of the South Pacific Reef and then to stop on St. Lawrence Island in Alaska, where Siberia and America meet, and experience a day in the lives of the indigenous Yupik people. A Hallig (a sand
island) in the North Sea will bring you back to Germany where you’re just short of getting wet feet when the tide rolls in. After traveling over 35,000 kilometers (21,750 miles) around the world on only one day, your journey will take you back to Bremerhaven. More exciting activities along the sea After all of these adventures, enjoy a relaxed coffee break at the old harbor with historic ships in the small port and modern cranes, cruise and cargo ships in the distance. Visit the “Schifffahrtsmuseum” which displays historic vessels, including the best-preserved Middle Age cargo ship “Bremer Kogge,” built in 1380. Stop by the “Zoo am Meer” with seals, crabs and other maritime creatures or treat yourself to a harbor cruise during the summer months. If you decide to extend your stay, check out a hotel that looks like a giant sail with a magnificent view over the port or spend a night on a historic three-mast sailboat. Whether you return with your car or not, you’re destined to have exciting and surprising memories of Bremerhaven in your trunk.

by people worldwide who have German heritage. Held from Feb. 8-13 this year, it’s utterly bonkers and terrific fun. Get involved! Fasching can be documented back to pre-Roman times. These times were difficult for the average person, so the carnival season was a chance to be free, enjoy life and have some fun in a world where fun was nonexistent for many. Today’s masks and costumes date back to medieval times when they were worn as ways to avoid punishment and persecution, as carnival goers would mock the strict rulers of the day. Had they not used masks to disguise themselves, they would have been caught and death would have been an inevitability. Fasching is celebrated in all Germanspeaking countries. Its timing in the year is poignant, as it is just before the fasting season of Lent, which is when many people will forsake food as a sacrifice for religious reasons. Fasching allows a person to have a huge celebration, indulge, enjoy and embrace all that is good before things are out of bounds during Lent. Germany is the country which holds the largest and most vibrant carnivals to celebrate the Fasching season, with nearly every city having its own celebration. The city of Cologne (Köln) probably holds one of the biggest carnival celebrations in the country. Many places of work see this time as a public holiday, though it is not yet officially recognized as one. This means to have the time off, your boss needs to be a fan! February events include: Altweiber Fastnacht The ‘Woman’s Carnival’ which happens on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday (Feb. 8), is also known as Altweiber
Fastnacht. This is a day when women can express their freedom and have a lot of fun. Tradition encourages ladies to cut men’s ties and place kisses on those they fancy. It is a flirty, fun event that many people look forward to every year! Rosenmontag Rosenmontag, or Rose Monday, is what comes next (Feb. 12). This is a major highlight for many dancers, marching bands and float parades: streets are filled with entertainment for all. These days, floats are more extravagant and more modern, and often include caricatures of the faces of politicians and other public figures. You will also be able to find fancy balls and other events that involve dance performances along with a dance floor to try your own luck during intermissions.

Fasching parades to look for in the future: Fastnachtdienstag The celebrations come to an end on Ash Wednesday. But prior to this is the much sought-after Shrove Tuesday (Feb. 13), or Fastnachtdienstag in German. This is another great opportunity to attend one of the costume balls that are held all over Germany. It’s also the day most German school children either have the day off or attend school in a costume (as Americans often do on Halloween). Costumes Fasching is very much a time where everyone, and especially children, like to dress up in fancy dress to take part in the fun. You will notice all the German department stores around you will start promoting their fancy dress costumes ready for the parties and parades of fasching. Narrenrufe Narrenfufe is the collective name of the various Carnival greetings that people call

The popular annual Stuffed Animal Sleepover starts with children dropping off their furry friends Thursday, Jan. 26 at 5 p.m. at the library, Bldg. 3810 on Landstuhl Post. After listening to a bedtime story, children will tuck them in for a library sleepover and pick them up the next day, Friday, Jan. 26 from noon to 4 p.m. Children will receive photos of the shenanigans that their stuffed animals got into overnight. Everyone is encouraged to wear their pajamas to storytime.
