10th AAMDC Soldiers forge partnership with Czech air defenders

n U.S. European Command and U.S. Army Europe, theater security cooperation is a cornerstone of military operations. That multinational cooperation includes increasing militaries’ interoperability, strengthening national partnerships and building partner military capacity. Leadership is a contact sport

COMMENTARY

Nick Petren 569th U.S Forces Police Squadron/CC We are approaching the time of year where Fasching celebrations occur in many towns and cities in the local area, including RamsteinMiesenbach and Kaiserslautern. This annual event is a pre-Lenten carnival, during which celebrants don creative costumes to chase away the evil spirits of winter in preparation for spring. The largest festivities occur at the end of the carnival season, similar to the Mardi Gras celebrations many Americans are familiar with. Shrove Tuesday falls on March 4 this year. Festivals and celebrations are great opportunities to have fun with family and friends as well as to experience European culture. Moreover, before these events is an opportune time for leaders to set or reinforce expectations for standards of behavior on and off duty. Leadership is a contact sport. Contact leadership should be the

premise on which all military supervisors base their unique leadership style. I’m not referring to physical contact, but face-to-face communication. This applies equally to first line supervisors and commanders. President Abraham Lincoln, one of our nation’s most revered leaders, intuitively knew how to lead people. Some of his methods are reflected in many common themes in notable modern philosophies on leadership. For example, he would frequently visit his subordinate leaders in their workplace. He always made time to visit his military forces in the field, even coming under enemy fire on one occasion. This is commonly referred to today as “leadership or management by walking around.” Getting out of the office and visiting work centers in order to personally interact with unit members is critical to effective leadership. It serves to ensure leaders keep the pulse of their organization, understand challenges, and recognize superior performers or toxic influences or environments.

It also should assist with keeping all members of the organization informed of leadership expectation and messages, as well as build and maintain trust throughout the organization. To place this in modern context, though mass emails have their uses, leadership is not a mass email. Technology must be leveraged to optimize the ability to lead and complete our missions, not used as a crutch to avoid uncomfortable situations or personal interactions. Leaders should use the various technological tools available, from email to social media to Sharepoint, to increase unit productivity and efficiency as well as to connect with the community. Supervisors must engage regularly with their subordinates face-toface and understand their strengths, weaknesses, challenges and plans, as well as their maturity level. This is the key to developing them as Airmen and helping them make positive judgments, professionally and personally.

Successful and meaningful communication is a critical skill for leaders. President Lincoln was arguably one of the most successful communicators in American history. The power to motivate followers is built on your ability to communicate effectively combined with mutual trust and respect built on a leader’s competence and willingness to set the example. Lastly, contact leadership is how we standardize and enforce a culture of dignity and respect throughout our work centers — a task in which we must not fail. Supervisors at all levels must not accept anything less than the Air Force standard in this arena. Never walk past or ignore a problem. We need leaders with the courage to uphold professional standards and intervene to stop inappropriate or unsafe behavior. In this respect, all Airmen can and should be leaders. So, have a good time this Fasching season, but always remember who you are and what you stand for, and be a leader.

where its journey will end and with it, a final salute. From the demanding training to the late nights providing service at a funeral, few think about what it takes to be part of a base honor guard, but for Senior Airman Chardonnay Taylor, 1st Air and Space Communications Operations Squadron honor guardsman, it’s what she has prepared for since high school. “While I was in school, I joined the Junior ROTC team and fell in love instantly,” Taylor said. “From the drills to the marches, I enjoyed the lifestyle, so once I was done with school I went to the recruiter to see what my options were.” Unaware honor guard was a career option after five months, the California native started by beginning her training as a global command and control systems administrator. “In technical training I had the opportunity to witness the Air Force Honor Guard perform, and it was amazing,” Taylor said. “I knew I had already started one path, but I didn’t want that to hold me back so I did my research.” Though determined, Taylor was unable to meet the Air Force Honor Guard requirements of being a height of 5 feet 8 inches. Refusing to be stopped by just a few inches, Taylor finally found a way to be part of the 42-year-old tradition when she arrived at Ramstein. “Ramstein is my first duty station, and while here I learned that there was a base honor guard that didn’t have a height restriction,” Taylor said. “So, I figured after I mastered my job I would continue toward my dream.” Finally part of a culture she has worked toward since high school, Taylor began her training to earn the title of honor guardsman. “Not everyone can be a part of the base honor guard,” said Staff Sgt. We constantly train, improving our Airmen physically and mentally.” Now, two years and 57 details later, Taylor has proved to be an indispensable addition to the team. “She is my go-to person,” Dore said. “She helps train all the new Airmen that come in, and I know I can count on her to get the mission done.” To Taylor, honor guard means more than paying respects and learning new skills — it is what taught her to overcome her fears and grow, not only as a leader but as a person. “Before the military, my self-confidence was

Construction notices

• Gate 9 (Vogelweh Housing/B270 gate) will be closed from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday for emergency barrier button repair. All personnel are requested to use Gate 8 (Vogelweh Housing/ Armstrong’s Gate) for all entry and exit during this time. • A road construction project is affecting traffic entering and leaving Ramstein Air Base through the West Gate. The project site for construction is the bridge over state road L363 leading from the base to the 435th Construction and Training Squadron site. The ramp coming from Ramstein-Miesenbach will be closed to traffic. The contractor will start cutting trees and then progress in phases to repair the bridge that crosses L363. Expect multiple lanes to be closed in various phases. • Construction on the parking lot in front of Bldg. 426 on Ramstein is now ongoing. The parking lot is closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic during this time. Pedestrian access to the Ramstein Northside Post Office will be maintained by a sidewalk along Jefferson Avenue. Post office parking can be found at the aquatics center or golf course parking lots. The sidewalk access will be maintained, but parking in the area will be impacted significantly. The reconstruction is needed to maintain roadway safety, ride quality and reduce vehicle deterioration. Traffic delays can be expected through March 17.

AFA scholarship

The Air Force Association has re-named their spouse scholarship, The Mike and Gail Donley Spouse Scholarship, as a lasting tribute to the former secretary of the Air Force and his wife. The AFA would like to award one scholarship to each of the Air Force Major Commands and possibly to spouses of Airmen who are not currently assigned to a MAJCOM depending on the quality and number of applications received. Recipients of this scholarship will be awarded $2,500, which may be used for any reasonable cost related to pursuing a degree, including tuition, books, transportation or child care costs. 786th CES first-term Airman powers up KMC Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Holly Mansfield 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Editors note: This is the second story in a three-part series about firstterm Airmen working different jobs at Ramstein. Fresh into the military, a first-term Airman might not know how they personally impact the base mission. Learning how something as simple as putting in a bulb fits into not only the day-to-day tasks at Ramstein, but also to service members deploying, can shine a light on an Airman’s place in the Air Force. For Airman 1st Class Rashad Spann, 786th Civil Engineer Squadron electrical technician, its taking every job and doing them with all of his abilities that keeps him in the game. “No matter what you’re doing, whether its cleaning or doing a simple job like changing out a light bulb, you want to get it done to the best of your abilities,” Spann said. “If that means wiping down the entire fixture and not just the casing, then I would do that. Show excellence, and don’t just try to get it done quickly.” Taking time to make sure work is accurate can mean the difference between a perfect finished product or having to go back and re-do it. For Airmen like Spann, putting pride into his job brings new knowledge that matters. “You can easily get a job done quickly, but it’s about how much pride you take in doing your work. So, you want to make sure you put your all

into whatever you do,” Spann said. “I enjoy my job. I learn something new every day.” Having love for the job not only helps Airmen have a more successful career, it can also create bonds within the workplace. Building that connection with other Airmen in the shop helps Spann and others get their work done more efficiently. Having two minds with different levels of experience can help both individuals learn more about their job, but for younger Airmen, having the NCOs there for help is a huge benefit. “We have a pretty strong bond with our NCOs,” Spann said. “They go out on jobs with us, and if we have any problems or if we want to keep them in the loop, we will let them know and they will give us feedback. They don’t mind sitting down and taking time out to talk to us.” NCOs teaching new Airmen how to do their job more proficiently and giving help with personal problems can show Airmen how to have excellence in everything they do. The core values are meant to set the right path for Airmen so they can have a successful career. “The core values are good to fall back on because not everyone lives by them,” Spann said. “To me, having service before self means putting your job in the military before yourself rather than trying to rush to leave from work when you have something to do in your spare time when you still have a job you have to get completed. It’s the mission first.” Some Airmen don’t come to work to just win awards, but supervisors and peers will notice when an Airman

is motivated to do their job correctly every day. “Spann’s work ethic is not exactly what I would expect out of a typical Airman first class,” said Tech. Sgt. Getting nominated for awards by one’s supervision can show how much dedication someone is putting into work.

“He is our representative for the electrical section and realizes he is a part of something bigger than just another Airman in the mix. We are all excited that he is going up for the Airman of the Month and are confident he will do well,” Stolicker said. “I tell my guys if no one will notice if you have PCS’d or are gone on vacation, you probably aren’t putting enough effort forward. Everyone needs to leave their foot print, and I can tell you in the short time A1C Spann has been here, he has done just that. It would take two average Airmen to fill what he can do in a typical day.” Fitting one’s self into the right place in the Air Force can be as easy as fitting a new light bulb in it’s fixture. By Sept. 2, 1945, more than 16 million Americans had donned uniforms and served in the U.S. military to fight and win World War II. Of those, more than 1 million were African-Americans who served in all branches of the military and combat theaters. By the end of the war, none were awarded the Medal of Honor. Finally, in 1997, seven AfricanAmerican Soldiers were awarded Medals of Honor following a study that determined there was racial dis-

parity in the selection of Medal of Honor awardees, including one who is laid to rest in nearby St. Avold, France. Units and organizations across the Army have found different ways to celebrate African-American history and military contributions during the month of February. erforming CPR on a patient who needs immediate medical attention sometimes isn’t enough. What are you to do if CPR isn’t working and the ambulance hasn’t arrived yet? The 86th Medical Group offers an Advanced Cardiac Life Support course every two months to Airmen who are looking to sharpen their cardiac emergency care skills and learn what to do in those critical moments. ACLS is a two-day course that teaches Airmen how to perform an advance level of care on a patient who has gone into cardiac arrest. ACLS is a multistep process done by the first responder and allows trained medics to extend the window of emergency care before the arrival of an ambulance. Those who are trained on an advanced level of cardiac arrest care do what doctors would be doing in the first hour of patient contact in the field. “This training is proven to save lives,” said Master Sgt. Brian Donnelly, 86th Civil Engineer Squadron fire department district fire chief. “If I can perform advanced cardiac life support within the first six to eight minutes of patient contact, then I’ve got a 50/50 chance of a viable patient to have a positive outcome.” The trainees practice on state of the art equipment called a patient simulator, a realistic, anatomically correct electronic mannequin that allows the trainee to exercise their skills on a more lifelike patient. “The mannequins we had in the late ’70s and early ’80s are night and day compared

Saturday marks the first day of March, and Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Welsh III issued an Air Force wide “all-in” Mustache March challenge to Airmen during his Feb. 20 address to the Air Force Association’s Air Warfare Symposium. Mustache March started as a fighter pilot superstition during the Vietnam War. Pilots claimed that a forbidden ‘stache protected aircraft from enemy bullets. Legendary ace fighter pilot Brig. Gen. Robin Olds expanded the tradition by continuing to grow out his mustache against military regulations. Though not intended as a direct act of defiance, Olds’ rebellion symbolized the importance of a balance between individuality and teamwork. KMC Airmen participating in the Mustache

March challenge must be compliant with Air Force Instruction 36-2903, specifically Chapter 3, grooming and appearance standards. According to AFI 36-2903, “Male Airmen may have mustaches; however, they will be conservative (moderate, being within reasonable limits; not excessive or extreme) and will not extend downward beyond the lip line of the upper lip or extend sideways beyond a vertical line drawn upward from both corners of the month.” For Airmen participating in the annual mustache madness event, keep the soup strainer in regulations. George Patton’s Third Army. “There are 10,489 brave Americans interred here,” said Col. Gregory Brady, the 10th AAMDC commander. “As we honor them today we recognize one in particular. Staff Sgt. Rivers represented the best of our Army values; he refused to be evacuated for injuries, continued to lead when more senior leaders were giving up and fought bravely for several days after being injured until he was killed in action.” Connecting to the event in a meaningful way was easy for the Soldiers who visited, thanks in part to a guided tour of the cemetery grounds. The tour featured an interactive conversation about the contributions and bravery of Rivers and his all-black tank battalion, units considered inferior by many at the time. “The tour guide really brought the visit to life by making it about a central theme of having a dream. From Dr. King so many years later to the Soldiers here in letters home and the family members that dreamed of their return,” said Master Sgt. Paul Rowland, an air defense operations sergeant with headquarters 263rd Army Air and Missile Defense Command. Rivers’ recognition and awarding of the CMOH was made possible after years of persistence by his former commanding officer and a review of awards for valor given to minority troops during the war. “We’ve learned a lot about the service of AfricanAmericans during World War II, and I’m proud that we’re recognizing these Soldiers based on their heroism,” said Maj. Dextromethorphan, or DXM, an ingredient in more than 140 cough and cold medications, is a safe and highly effective cough suppressant; however, when ingested in excessive amounts, DXM produces physiological effects that include hallucinations, feelings of detachment from surroundings and self, loss of motor control, drowsiness, rapid heartbeat and vomiting. The significance of overthe-counter medication abuse has been highlighted locally through recent incidents where adolescents were found to have consumed large amounts of over-the-counter medication containing DXM.

Risks to abusers are increased because medications that contain DXM also have expectorants, pain relievers and antihistamines. Overdoses of these ingredients can produce additional side effects, such as liver damage, coma and death. With prolonged abuse, users may become paranoid, delusional and psychotic. These effects can remain weeks after the discontinuation of the medication. Parents and guardians need to play an active role in stemming this health risk. Adolescents are the primary abusers of over-the-counter medications because the medications are inexpensive, rela-

tively easy to obtain and are perceived to carry few risks. KHS robotics club takes fifth at competition Since September, students from Kaiserslautern High School’s Robotics Club, also known as The Block Busters, have prepared for the first Tech Challenge Robotics Competition, which took place recently in Munich, Germany. The competition involved designing and building a robot that could place blocks into baskets, raise a flag, hang from a pull-up bar, and locate an infrared beacon. To prepare for the event, students met during their lunches and once a month on a Saturday to build their robots. Mentors from Lockheed Martin also donated their time and expertise to help students learn programming and design strategies, and parents held a bake sale at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center to help raise funds for travel and parts. Fifteen teams participated in the event, where Kaiserslautern students met other students from Aviano, Vilsek, Lakenheath, Romania, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands. There were three qualifying rounds. In Round 1, the Kaiserslautern robot displayed remarkable maneuverability due to the OmniWheel configuration of the steering controls. A last minute addition of a crank allowed the robot to raise the flag while their partner went for the pull-up bar. During Round 2, the robot wowed the crowd by launching a block off its conveyor belt and into the basket. Unfortunately, a loose wire caused the robot to malfunction during the driver controlled period. After re-programing

the code and re-attaching the wires between Rounds 2 and 3, the robot was back in action as it tossed a block into a basket during the autonomous period, then proceeded to collect and toss more blocks during the driver controlled period, finishing with raising the flag. After three qualifying rounds, the Block Busters landed in fifth place. Only the first four teams were automatically entered into the last two matches; however, the Block Busters placed well enough to be invited by the Eurobots to be their alliance partners in those semifinal rounds. In the end, the alliance team of the RoboRaptors and Falconators won the day. The Block Busters received a tremendous amount of help along the way from mentors, parents, the administration and other FTC teams. Even though this event is over, the team is still looking for ways to design robots. Some students will continue working with this robot to refine the design and test new ideas. Other students will be participating in the World Robot Olympiad this spring. This new contest features new challenges, requiring new robots and new programs. As an officer, she serves the Army as a lieutenant colonel in the 7th Civil Support Command. Through her passion, she serves the community as a member of a very unique guild. Lt. Col. Margaret R. Fierst, the 21st TSC transformation section branch chief, is a member of the Rheinland-Pfalz Quilt Guild and uses the guild as a way to give back to the KMC. The Rheinland-Pfalz Quilt Guild has been a part of the KMC for more than 30 years. In that time, they had members from England, the Netherlands, Germany and the U.S. Since the attacks on 9/11, the guild decided to show their appreciation for Soldiers and their families in a unique way. “For a while now we have been donating quilts to wounded warriors,” Fierst said. “The members of the guild will gather materials and put these quilts together for our wounded Soldiers.” Fierst and the guild also give back to the medical community at Landstuhl as often as possible. Newborn babies who are born early or with complications are sent to the Newborn Intensive Care Unit at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. These babies are kept in incubators under very low light in the hospital, said Anne Marie Smith, a member of the Rheinland-Pfalz Quilt Guild. The guild decided that a great way to brighten the hospital wing and provide these babies with a lifelong keepsake was to donate quilts. These brightly colored quilts cover the incubators to keep light out and the babies take them home when they leave, Smith said. “Donating these quilts is a very important priority

for the entire guild,” Fierst said. “We try to donate them as often as we can, and we get very positive feedback from the families and the hospital staff. One of the nurses recently told us that the quilts really brighten up what could be considered a very dark room.” Fierst said quilting is her passion and it is wonderful to be a part of a group that uses quilting in such a positive way. Other members of the guild said they feel Fierst is a valued member of the group. “Peggy (Fierst) is a wonderful member of the guild and is our publicity officer,” said Frieda Chevalier, president of the Rheinland-Pfalz Quilt Guild. “She tries to bring her and our passion to

everyone in the community. So many people do not know what we do. She is trying to tell them, and she is succeeding.” Fierst and the rest of the Rheinland-Pfalz Quilt Guild invite anyone in the KMC who wants to learn how to quilt to come join them. They will host a membership drive March 22 at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center on Ramstein. “I love quilting and so do the other guild members,” Fierst said. “It is our passion and a form of therapy — quilt therapy. It is definitely something I consider contributes to my resiliency. If you want to be a part of a great organization, come on over.”

ore than 120 military members from nine nations took part in the KMC First Sergeant Council’s annual First Sergeant Symposium Feb. 18 to 21 on Ramstein. The symposium featured 10 international attendees for the first time in its history, including representatives from Belgium, Estonia, France and three from Germany. During the symposium, Airmen interested in serving as first sergeants were given an in-depth look into what life is like in the special duty position. The four-day event was filled with presentations about first sergeant responsibilities, including family care plans, administrative actions and counseling. The symposium also featured a current and former first sergeant panel, and international attendees were given a tour of the Kisling NCO Academy. Chief Master Sgt. Janis Jallai, Air Surveillance Wing command chief master sergeant and senior enlisted leader of the Estonian air force, said he has wanted to attend the first sergeant symposium since 2011 when he first learned of the first sergeant position. Jallai met with Chief Master Sgt. David Williamson, then U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa command chief, and Chief Master Sgt. Adam McNair, USAFEAFAFRICA Headquarters Squadron first sergeant.

During that meeting, Jallai said he was intrigued by the first sergeant role and wanted to incorporate the position into the Estonian air force. He said he’s taking everything he learned during the symposium back to his leadership, but the briefing on first sergeant responsibilities was his favorite. “It gave me a very good picture of what they do,” Jallai said. “What I liked most was hearing from former first sergeants and how they handled their responsibilities. In those moments I got some ideas on how to deal with my Airmen, because they had some difficult situations and they developed solutions quickly.” It’s very nice to know that the U.S. Air Force has the first sergeant position, Jallai added. “You take care of your people, first sergeants are people focused. I’m very impressed with the passion U.S. Air Force first sergeants have,” he said. Chief Master Sgt. Rolf Gemünden, a German air force NCO academy instructor and adviser, echoed Jallai’s sentiments. Gemünden, a former first sergeant himself, said first sergeants in the German air force are similar to first sergeants in the U.S. Air Force; however, he said he was greatly impressed with the passion U.S. Air Force first sergeants display. “The first sergeants in the U.S. Air Force have a great standard. They perform a great duty. The vision they have and what they want to do for their units and their Airmen is something I’ll definitely take back,” Gemünden said. “This passion first sergeants have in their duties —

I want to pass that along to my NCOs.” Gemünden also said it’s important for USAFE-AFAFRICA to continue building partnerships with events like the symposium. “There is so much we can share and so much we can learn from each other,” Gemünden said. “Doing so may give you hints on how you can improve yourself or your service or help understand differences between one another.” Building partnerships is a must, he added. “The world is changing and many burning points are popping up and basically we share the same goals,” he said. “We want to get better, and we’re working together on the battlefield in these parts of the world, so why not improve our partnership as well. “The more we learn from each other, the better we’ll function together,” he continued. Master Sgt. John Carbon, 721st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron first sergeant and one of the symposium’s organizers, said he enjoyed putting the

event together, the first in USAFEAFAFRICA’s history to host international attendees. “Any time you can say ‘first ever’ in the Air Force is a big deal,” he said. “I’m happy it’s the first, and I hope it’s not the last. I hope we can go to their countries and teach them more and have an even greater audience of their enlisted folks. “I would love to be a part of the growth of another country’s enlisted corps. That would be historic in so many different ways,” he added. Carbon has been a first sergeant for nearly a third of his 19-year career and said he loves the job, especially when he can share what he does with others. “We don’t turn the wrenches, we don’t build the houses, we don’t draw the blood, but we take care of the people who do,” he said. “As first sergeants, we take care of things behind the scenes. We’re kind of like roadies for a concert; we make sure the sound system works, so when the band gets out there and plays, nobody misses a beat.”

Historically, the U.S. Air Force Academy produces outstanding leaders. The school is one of the country’s prestigious military academies and prides itself on accepting only the best. From among many exceptionally qualified applicants, five Ramstein High School seniors are on the verge of joining the ranks of academy cadets. Three students have officially received appointments, while two await final notification. All met the formidable entry requirements of the U.S. Air Force Academy. Seniors Lucas Mireles, Thomas Davey, Matthew Sharpy, Emily Passmore and Hunter Pace competed with applicants across the country to earn a coveted spot at the academy. In order to achieve this, applicants must

outshine competitors in areas such as moral character, academics, athletics and leadership. Three of Ramstein’s selected students proved themselves competitive applicants in part with their involvement in the Air Force Junior ROTC. What they may not be familiar with is the survey’s done every year to ensure they’re allowed the right amount of money for their living quarters. The Defense Travel Management Office conducts the annual OHA Utility Expenses Survey every year

to gauge how much service members spent during the previous year on utilities. “DTMO relies on this survey to assess the proper allowance amount for our Airmen’s utilities and recurring home maintenance expenses,” said 2nd Lt. Emily Angell, 86th Comptroller Squadron financial services flight commander. “The more participation we get in this survey, the more accurate our allowance will be for our Airmen.” Active duty members are entitled

to OHA based on their grade, dependency status and permanent duty station, and they are required to submit the actual costs of utility expenses incurred in Germany. “Any active-duty service member stationed in Germany is encouraged to take this survey,” Angell said. “If the service member is unable to take the survey, a spouse can take the survey on behalf of the member.” To take the survey, service members should use actual bills or records of their utilities and are required to

report the average monthly cost. Women’s club holds annual Pfennig Bazaar March 7 to 9 A flea market of a special kind will take place March 7 to 9 in the event hall of the Kaiserslautern Gartenschau. The 53rd annual Pfennig Bazaar, sponsored by the German-American and International Women’s Club Kaiserslautern, under the patronage of Kaiserslautern’s Lord Mayor Dr. Klaus Weichel, is a special flea market where patrons can find true treasures at bargain prices. The Pfennig Bazaar is known as the biggest flea market in West Palatinate. Its name originates from the former German currency — the Deutsch Mark and Pfennigs, today euro and cents. Sale items include well-preserved clothing and linen, hats, children’s toys, antiques and collectibles, as well as small and tested electrical appliances, books in English and German, and much more. The bazaar is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 7, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 8 and 9. During the bazaar, GAIWC club members will sell homemade cakes, waffles, refreshments and other small dishes, such as soup and sausages. The Pfennig Bazaar will be held in the event hall of the Kaiserslautern Gartenschau, found just beyond the Gartenschau main entrance at Lauterstraße, 67659 Kaiserslautern. This is the same location where the skating rink was held. Visitors should bring a few extra euro for parking, which can also be found near the Gartenschau Brauhaus restaurant at Forellenstraße 6, 67659 Kaiserslautern. A registered German non-profit organization, GAIWC of Kaiserslautern, was established in 1956 to foster German-American friendship and promote cultural understanding. Since then, other nationalities have been welcomed into the club, and the name started carrying the word “international,” as well. The Pfennig Bazaar is the club’s biggest fundraising event each year. Proceeds are donated to regional welfare projects and charitable organizations supporting the local community. As a member of the Federation of German-American Clubs, GAIWC also sponsors German-American youth activities and university-level student exchange programs. “In addition to contributions toward social programs in the local German community, we were able to support many American organizations in the KMC last year, including the Landstuhl Fisher

Sharpy said he has known since he was young that he wanted to study at the Air Force Academy. “I’ve grown up around the military, and in my experiences I’ve seen the ofﬁcers who have come out of the academy. They’re very sharp in everything they do, so you aspire to be like them. Ultimately, it’s something I really wanted to do.” The passion for the Air Force is also shared by JROTC cadet Passmore, who echoes Sharpy’s admiration for the Airmen she grew up around. Passmore’s enthusiasm for attending the academy is also motivated by her desire to pursue a degree in civil engineering. Her interest in the subject has provided a clear goal for her future career.

“There’s a combat civil engineering squadron called the RED HORSE that builds bridges to transport Army vehicles and make sure there are runways for the aircraft,” Passmore said. “It’s something I would really love to do.” Mireles, a senior leader of the JROTC detachment at Ramstein High School, is driven by a desire to study aeronautical engineering and earn a pilot slot at the academy. His goal for the future is to ﬂy ﬁghter aircraft. Like his counterparts, Mireles was inspired to pursue a career in the Air Force because of his military upbringing. “This has always been my goal,” Mireles said. “It (has) always been the Air Force. I get to serve my nation, and it’s an incredible honor.” All three JROTC cadets acknowledged that merely applying for the academy was rigorous and highly stressful. The students began the process as early as their junior year of high school in order to meet the

requirements, such as the acquiring of a nomination. Nominations are an essential part of the application package and may be obtained by a vice presidential, Congressional, military affiliated, U.S. territory or international nominating authority. “It was a relief to finally hear back,” Mireles said. “There was a lot of stress leading up to it, so relief is the first thing I felt. Then the excitement kicked in.” Davey, who won appointments to both the U.S. Air Force Academy and

the U.S. Naval Academy, said early preparation for acceptance into the academy is paramount. “Preparation starts the moment you get into high school. You have to have good grades, you have to be involved in athletics, you have to seek leadership opportunities wherever you can,” he said. “If the academy sees that you’re taking the initiative, it makes it that much easier to be accepted.” Davey has not yet decided which academy he will attend, but is looking forward to exploring the variety of educational opportunities available at either school. He is interested in aviation as a career but wants to consider other fields as well. Though the students recognize the difficulties that lay before them, all are prepared to meet the challenge. “The academy is definitely not an easy school to get through, especially the first year,” Davey said. “But in the end, you get to do the best job in the world.”
