U.S. Marine Corp veteran and Army Soldier Sgt. 1st Class Richard Stayskal was selected for Special Forces Underwater Operations School. To attend, he needed medical clearance for a lung injury he sustained while taking enemy fire in Iraq 2004. In January 2017, an Army doctor gave Stayskal clearance to attend the school based on a CT scan.
Shortly after his training began, Stayskal experienced worsening symptoms, including shortness of breath, coughing blood and difficulty breathing. Five months later, he attempted to seek immediate medi-
cal attention for his deteriorating health, but was denied faster care.
By June, Stayskal obtained care at a civilian facility where another CT scan and biopsy confirmed he had progressed lung cancer. According to Stayskal, the civilian pulmonologist was shocked the Army doctor who cleared him back in January did not identify the visible tumor in his right lung. The doctor explained that had the scan been read correctly and the tumor identified then, Stayskal would have had a 90 percent survival rate.
Stayskal quickly hired an attorney who explained that there was nothing she could do for him because of the Feres doctrine.
The Feres doctrine is a long-
The Department of Defense, Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness, Military Compensation Policy Directorate will conduct an Overseas Housing Allowance Utility Expenses Survey from Jan. 1 to March 1.
The survey is designed to collect data on utility and recurring maintenance expense incurred by uniformed service members stationed overseas who reside in private housing.
“The Overseas Housing Allowance is a valuable entitlement for service members who are stationed overseas,” said Capt. Christian D. Torres, 86th Comptroller Squadron director of operations. “The data provided will directly impact the Utility and Recurring Maintenance Allowances paid to service members.”
Members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community should participate in the survey if they receive OHA and meet the following qualifications:
• Have been stationed in the country where this survey is being conducted for at least 6 months
• Reside in privately leased quar-

The survey is voluntary and takes approximately 15 minutes to complete and should be completed by the service member or their spouse, whomever has knowledge of housing expenses. A Common Access Card is not required to access the survey.
Before starting the survey gather your bills, receipts and records of utility and recurring maintenance expenses incurred within the last 12 months and compute a monthly average for each of these expenses if applicable, Torres said. Report all expenses in the currency in which you paid and do not convert costs.
“Your time and effort spent answering the survey questions will enable the Department of Defense to set equitable OHA rates,” Torres said. “We ask that you make every effort to take the survey and report your expenses accurately.”

standing legal holding that can be summarized into one principle: Service members do not have the right to sue the federal government for suspected negligence or wrongful death.
This doctrine was created in 1950 when a Supreme Court ruling held that the United States cannot be liable for injuries to service members that happen ’incident to service.’ The definition of this phrase, ’incident to service,’ has been broadened and stretched over the past 70 years to include all manners of alleged negligence.
Despite pushback, Congress declined to change the Federal Tort Claims Act, which would overturn Feres and allow service members
some kind of restitution.
In December 2019, Congress broke their silence on the issue of the Feres doctrine; largely due to Stayskal’s persistence and story. The same attorney that deflated Stayskal’s hopes for justice through the courts, helped on his mission to convince Congress to change the language of the FTCA.
In 2019, Congress passed the Sgt. 1st Class Richard Stayskal Military Medical Accountability Act that created a compromise.
This law established a claims system where service members and their families can file a claim for medical malpractice subject to a few key limitations. The U.S. Army claims service has specialized med-
ical malpractice lawyers that give guidance to potential claimants on all the applicable limits of this law.
Among other restrictions, the alleged negligence must have occurred in a Department of Defense facility and the claim must be filed within two years of the incident.
Furthermore, payments to recompense for pain and suffering are currently capped at $600,000, and damages are reduced based on other benefit systems like the Veterans Affairs disability compensation. Although this act does not eliminate Feres; it provides a method for some recuperation and may be the first step toward greater changes to come.

According to the Enlisted Force Development action plan, we must create and maintain a sense of trust, belonging and connection between all Airmen to foster healthy relationships that recharge spiritual, social, mental, physical and financial fitness.
The Ramstein Air Base Integrated Resiliency Office ensures that this plan is put into action with monthly training classes.
“The Resilience Trainer Assistant course class has allowed me to take a gigantic step back from how I have been making decisions all my life,” said Senior Airman Maria Taylor. “It really helped me dig deep with self-reflection.”
The RTA course, taught by Tech. Sgt. Amanda Martinez, 86th Airlift Wing IRO noncommissioned offi-
cer in charge, is a three-day class to give Airmen resiliency skills they can use in their work and personal life.
“During the first two days of the RTA course they learn resiliency skills and then on the third day they teach what they learned back to the class,” said Martinez. “Once they complete that, they’ll get a certificate, and then they are allowed to teach.”
The class teaches participants topics like gratitude, looking for the good in everyday life and being able to create customized goals based on personal values.
The goal of this course is to give Airmen the ability to overcome big and small adversities in their life using psychology based Air Force resiliency skills, and the ability to teach and share these skills with others in their workplace.
Martinez says she became a Resilience Trainer Assistant in
2013, during a rough time in her personal life.
“The little things that I learned in this course taught me how to take a step back and breathe for a few minutes,” said Martinez. “It taught me to gather my thoughts in a better way.”
After going through the course, she decided that she wanted to help others to learn these skills, and has been teaching these classes ever since.
In each class there can be up to 12 people enrolled who spend the three days networking and getting to know each other.
According to Taylor, she was the only Airman in a room of noncommissioned officers and senior noncommissioned officers who had all been in the Air Force much longer than her; but she never felt her input was less credible compared to theirs.
During the class, students are able to share adversities they have experienced without any kind of judgment, said Martinez. A big part of the class is talking through using the skills being learned.
A memo released by Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr., Chief of Staff of the Air Force and Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force JoAnne Bass says our [military] culture encourages seeking help and ensures we have support in place for [Airmen and their] families when those life challenges do surface.
“Resilience is much more than being tough,” said Bass. “It takes courage and strength, for sure, but it also takes connection to others in order to make it through tough times.”
The Enlisted Force Developmentaction plan says resiliency cannot be accomplished just by training and education, it has to be achieved through the choices we make and the way we live.
“People have all kinds of things going on in their lives, and on top of that we’re in the military,” said Martinez. “If you don’t have these skills that the RTA class teaches, it’s harder for you to maintain a positive headspace when you have these skills.”
According to those who have taken the course, Martinez and her
team are making a big impact at Ramstein each time they teach a class.
“I highly recommend taking this class to anyone aspiring to be a leader in any specialty,” said Taylor. “Since the class I have a brand-new perspective on what I want from my future and the goals I have made to get there.”
For those interested in taking this course, please contact the Integrated Resilience Office at 86aw.cvb.iro@us.af.mil
The Defense Department has released guidelines for the expansion of the military parental leave policy.
The memo is signed by Gilbert R. Cisneros, Jr., the undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness.
The memo applies to all service members and is effective as of Jan. 4. The memo provides details on transition to the new expanded parental leave for Service members who were on leave under the old military parental leave program as of Dec. 27, 2022, and had not used all of their maternity convalescent leave or their caregiver leave. *(see Editor’s Note)
“It is important for the development of military families that members be able to care for their newborn, adopted or placed child or children,” Cisneros says in the memo.
The memo further says that commanders must balance the needs of their units versus the
needs of service members to use parental leave.
The memo specifically says that service members who give birth “will be authorized 12 weeks of parental leave following a period
of convalescence to care for the child.” Service members who are the non-birth parent will also be authorized 12 weeks of leave to care for the child.
The memo explains that con-
valescent leave may be authorized for the recovery of the mother from giving birth if a doctor recommends it to address a specific medical condition and it is approved by the unit commander.
Service members who adopt a child or who have longterm foster care children placed with them will also be authorized 12 weeks of parental leave to care for the child.
Members who were on maternity convalescent leave or who had unused caregiver leave when the new policy went into effect will transition to the new policy without any loss of benefit and will receive the expanded benefit.
The twelve weeks of parental leave may be taken in the first year of the child’s life. “Parental leave may not be transferred to create a shared benefit, even between members of a dual military couple,” according to the memo.
“Members will be afforded the opportunity to take full advantage of the Military Parental Leave Program consistent with their desires [and the] operational requirements and training workloads of their unit,” Cisneros wrote.

a fire support specialist assigned to 6th Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division (3-1 ABCT), operationally assigned to the 1st Infantry Division (1 ID), locates targets during Hammer 22, a two-week training operation alongside Finland’s Army Headquarters, Armored Brigade, Pori Brigade, Karelia Brigade, Uti Jaeger Regiment and Logistics Department of the Defense Forces, in Niinisalo, Finland, Nov. 5, 2022. The 3-1 ABCT is among other units under the 1 ID working alongside allies and regional security partners to provide combat-credible forces to V Corps, America’s forward deployed corps in Europe.
NIINISALO, Finland — From under the cover of a camouflaged observation post, U.S. Army Spc. Chelsea Phillips, a joint fire support specialist assigned to 6th Squadron,
9th Cavalry Regiment (6-9 CAV), 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, a unit operationally assigned to the 1st Infantry Division in Europe, watches artillery rounds impact in the distance. Peering through her binoculars, Philips observes from about a kilometer away as the shells go scream-
ing into the dirt, sending plumes of debris into the air.
Together, Phillips and U.S. Army 2nd Lt. Hannah Slomkowski, a fire support officer with the 6-9 CAV, orchestrate moves on a chessboard. Instead of moving pieces on a tabletop, play is conducted on a much larger scale with explosive metal ordnance. For this reason, their calculations must be exact. Incorrect coordinates mean missed targets, or worse, the wrong ones.
Soldiers in joint fire support roles, also known as forward observers, play an essential role in coordinating indirect and air support fire from a vantage.
“A big part of my job as a fire support officer is understanding how maneuvers work,” said Slomkowksi. “How we plan out missions so that I can give them the best support with indirect fire.”
A typical sequence of events
U.S. Army Spc. Chelsea Phillips, left, and Staff Sgt. Mathew Peat, right, both forward observers assigned to the 6th Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division (3-1 ABCT), operationally assigned to the 1st Infantry Division (1 ID), calibrate an AN/PED-1 Lightweight Laser Designator Rangefinder during Hammer 22, a two week training operation alongside Finland’s Army Headquarters, Armored Brigade, Pori Brigade, Karelia Brigade, Uti Jaeger Regiment and Logistics Department of the Defense Forces, in Niinisalo, Finland, Nov. 5, 2022.
might go as follows; Phillips locates a target using an AN/PED-1 Lightweight Laser Designator Rangefinder, a portable target locator that gathers coordinates like a viewfinder used by golfers only far more advanced.
“Dismounting from an [M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle], setting up observation points and calling up artillery, motors and attack aviation is my primary job,” said Phillips.
From there, Phillips will check her coordinates and relay them back to Slomkowski, who is connected by radio to a nearby artillery battery. At this point Slomkowski takes over, re-confirming the coordinates with the battery before calling for fire. There are a few pops as the shells are fired, a whistle as they fly overhead then a splash of dirt as they burst upon the earth.
Phillips checks to ensure the
rounds hit their intended targets, communicates this information through the chain and the team repeats the process as needed.
“I absolutely love this job, you get a lot of leeway with how you want to paint the battlefield.” said Phillips. “ If you’re somebody that goes into the military and has this expectation of being in the firefight, operating different weapons systems and having some sort of power behind your job, then being a [forward observer] is the way to go.”
Forward observers with the 6-9 CAV corresponded with Finnish artillery batteries and mortar crews during exercise Hammer 22, a two week training operation conducted in Niinisalo, Finland, during the month of November. Their effort developed communication between the two forces allowing Finnish soldiers to familiarize themselves with the protocol used by the United States and its NATO Allies and partners.
“It was a really great opportunity because we got to call up Finnish artillery and motors,” said Phillips. “They’ve learned how we transcribe our fire missions so it was very cool to be able to teach them on the observation post the ways that we operate.”
U.S. Soldiers participated in the exercise alongside soldiers of Finland’s Armored Brigade, Pori Brigade, Karelia Brigade, Uti Jaeger Regiment and its Army Headquarters and Logistics Department of the Defense Forces.
“These past two weeks I have learned more about my job than in the past eight months,” said Slomkowksi. “Without working with the Finnish I would have never had this opportunity to get these reps, this is extremely crucial for us to be better at what we do.”
BISKUPICE, Poland — U.S. Army V Corps Soldiers spent time helping the students of Szkola Podstawowa Elementary School practice their English, in Biskupice, Poland, Dec. 21.
Headmaster Agnieszka Sliperska and English teacher Marta SiwakLabeda invited the Soldiers back after their first visit in September 2022 was a success. The visit gave 7th and 8th grade students a chance to utilize the English they have learned and gain confidence in their conversation skills.
“So, the first and most important thing is to push kids to speak,” said Siwak-Labeda, who has taught at the school for two years. She teaches 260 students at the school, 60 of whom participate in the visit with the Soldiers. “Our meetings [with the Soldiers] last for about three hours every month. The goal is to focus on speaking, speaking, speaking. The Soldiers are really cheerful, easy going, and kids aren’t afraid to speak with them. That’s the reason, and the most important factor for them coming here.”
Sliperska took over as headmaster in September of 2022. Her predecessor held the position for 32 years. As part of her new leadership, Sliperska implemented monthly visits to the school by U.S. Soldiers.
She said the students enjoy the break from a typical day in the classroom and benefit from the interactions.
“Kids are really happy, and they are really interested in the Soldiers, so they’re waiting and excited,” said Siwak-Labeda. “They want to take photos and want to talk… I also noticed that most of my students who are really shy in class are sitting here and talking through language, the real, everyday language, and aren’t afraid to make mistakes. That’s an important thing for me.”
During V Corps’ visit, Soldiers and students focused on talking about Christmas traditions, and the differences and similarities between how Christmas is celebrated in
America and Poland.
“Missions like these are important to help build positive relationships with the local community,” said Staff Sgt. Kyle Mcguigan. “By having us interact with the locals, not just the Polish military, we can let the community know that we are here and that we care about them. It helps us show that we are not just here for military missions on a base.”
V Corps Soldiers continue to build a growing relationship with the school and students. Soldiers have been invited to visit the students monthly, with different activities and Soldiers scheduled to make a presence at the school in the future.

Brazilian jiujitsu is a martial art that requires full control of your body and emotions, making it necessary for you to be free of all distractions. It teaches you to control your situation and to de-escalate when possible.
In the time before her U.S. Air Force service, Staff Sgt. Lacey Peinado, 1st Combat Communications Squadron expeditionary training advisor, encountered many moments where she felt she had little to no control. She had dealt with catcalling, unwanted advances at work and inappropriate comments.
Due to these experiences, Lacey said she realized early in her career that she was
afraid of being in rooms with only men and understood it wasn’t a healthy mindset for her to have.
“Being a female in the military can be really hard, especially when your job is male-dominant and some men aren’t used to working with women,” Peinado said.
“Moving overseas, I no longer had access to my friends, family, concealed firearm, or pepper spray, which provided me a false sense of security. I knew I had to find a more permanent solution.”
After some time living in Germany at Ramstein Air Base one of Peinado’s friends recommended Brazilian jiujitsu.
“At that point, I was still a bit hesitant to join Brazilian jiujitsu since it was all men, and it seemed as though that was the opposite of what I needed,” Peinado said.
“But, once I met the club members and got engulfed in the community, it changed my perspective and became addicting.”
Brazilian jiujitsu revolves around the concept, taken from traditional Japanese
jujutsu, that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, physically stronger and heavier opponent by using leverage and weight distribution. It teaches you how to control the situation and thrive under stress.
Peinado continued to pursue her passion for Brazilian jiujitsu by attending a course at the U.S. Air Force Academy, where she got her master instructor certification for combatives. Unfortunately, like many things in life, the path to her certification came with its own set of obstacles. For Peinado, this came in the form of receiving news that someone in her family had been diagnosed with cancer.
“It was an emotional roller coaster trying to juggle family trauma and focus on the course,” Peinado said. “But I made it work, and at the end of the day I graduated.”
After graduating from the U.S. Air Force Combatives class, Peinado set her sights on not only continuing to improve her skills, but also spreading her knowledge.
“Obtaining the certification has given me the ability to go to different units and teach basic boundary setting and de-escalation techniques,” Peinado said. “To anyone struggling to find their inner strength, I would tell them that the hardest part is showing up, and, once you take that first step, everything is easy, comparatively.”
I loved it so much, and it became such an important part of my life that I wanted to introduce it to others who may have the same skepticism that I once did, Peinado remarked.
“After taking Brazilian jiujitsu I now have the confidence to defend myself,” Peinado said. “I have started a women’s only class, where women who might feel intimidated due to a gender imbalance can learn in a safe environment.”
With 10 women now regularly attending her class, Peinado’s goal for the future is to do more scenario-based training that focuses not just on self-defense, but also on situational awareness

The 786th Force Support Squadron Kaiserslautern Military Community lodging team was selected as the winner of the 2022 Air Force Innkeeper Award and received the trophy at Ramstein Air Base, Dec. 12, 2022.
Air Force lodging operations were evaluated on customer service, financial measures and related support activities by an Innkeeper Evaluation Board composed of lodging experts from the Air Force Services Center.
The KMC lodging team manages the second largest lodging operation in the Air Force, with nearly 1,300 rooms, KMC lodging spans 30 facilities spread out over four properties on Ramstein, Vogelweh, Kapaun and Landstuhl.
“I am very proud of our lodging team for their hard work to support those traveling through Ramstein,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Amy M. Glisson, 86th Mission Support Group commander. “We see their dedication every day and this recognition is well deserved.”
This is the second time the team received the award since 2020 for providing excellent service.
“This is very rewarding for our lodging team,” said Heidi Payton, 786th FSS KMC lodging general manager. “It is nice to be recognized for our hard work and accomplishments throughout the year.”
The Air Force Innkeeper Award Program was created in 1981 to recognize installation-level lodging facilities and their work to provide support for travelers who come through U.S. Air Force installations.
The Royal Netherlands Air Force is preparing a deployment of their F-35 fighter jets in support of NATO’s enhanced Air Policing mission in the northeast.
Eight F-35s are going to deploy to Malbork, Poland, to join NATO’s mission bolstering the defensive posture along the eastern flank in February and March. While four of the fifthgeneration fighters will be employed in support of policing the skies in the region, the other four aircraft will conduct training and exercise drills with Allies, ready to augment the defensive mission when required.
“With these eight modern fighter aircraft, the Netherlands contribute to NATO’s Air Policing and Air Shielding missions in deterring and if required defending Allied territory in the Baltic region,” said Lieutenant Colonel Guido Schols, Commander
of the Netherlands’ F-35 detachment. “We are also assuring our Allies and demonstrating our commitment to the NATO Alliance,” he added.
The Netherlands regularly contribute to Allied Air Policing missions. At home, they have shared the task of safeguarding the skies above the BENELUX area together with Belgian Air Force F-16s since 2017. Abroad, they deployed their F-16s to Siauliai in support of Baltic Air Policing in 2005 and 2017 and to Malbork in 2014 right after Russia’s invasion of Crimea. On the southeastern flank, the Netherlands completed a twomonth F-35 deployment to Bulgaria in May, 2022.
While deployed to Marlbork, the Netherlands form part of the current rotation of three other Allies who operate fighters out of the Baltic region: Poland and France fly F-16 and Rafale fighters out of Siauliai, Lithuania, and Germany launches their Eurofighters out of Ämari, Estonia.
“Health Promotion is the art and science of helping individuals, commands and the military community improve their healthrelated behaviors and outcomes,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Carrissa Thomas, 86th Operational Medical Readiness Squadron registered dietitian.
The Health Promotion team offers classes and support that focuses on physical activity, sleep optimization, tobacco-free living, nutritional fitness and dietary supplement safety. They also offer group body composition assessments, cooking demonstrations and grocery store tours.
“Health promotion fosters a culture and environment that values health and wellness,” explained Katharine Cutler, 86th Operational Medical Readiness Squadron health promotions coordinator. “The program empowers individuals and organizations to lead healthy lives and improve health to ensure mission readiness and productivity of the military community.”
Healthy cooking is part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and the health promotions team offers cooking demonstrations for units and organizations upon request, and dorm friendly cooking demos as part of the First Term Airmen Course.
During health promotions classes, participants are introduced to general information on nutrition, physical activity and behavioral issues linked to weight and lifestyle issues, and are given the tools to identify personal goals and ways to make behavioral changes to meet their goals.
“Health Promotion resources are not only for active duty military members — we want families and Kaiserslautern Military Community members to know they can utilize our services,” Cutler said. “Additionally, our services extend outside of our office with over 50 percent of our time spent in the community. We are constantly working to reach more of our military community — everyone is welcomed.”
For more information contact the Health Promotion team at DSN: 480-1799.
Additional services can also be scheduled through Appointments Plus under Base Agency: Health Promotion or by phone.
On Sunday, Jan. 1, Germany took the lead of NATO’s highestreadiness military force, placing thousands of troops on standby and ready to deploy within days.
NATO’s Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF) was created in 2014 at the core of a strengthened NATO Response Force, following Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea and crises in the Middle East. Germany takes over from France, which led the force in 2022. In response to Russia’s full-fledged invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, NATO deployed elements of the VJTF to Romania on the unit’s first ever collective-defence mission.
“Germany is an important Ally and we thank Germany for leading the VJTF in 2023”, said NATO Spokesperson Oana Lungescu. “As Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine continues to threaten peace and security in Europe, there must be
no doubt about NATO’s resolve to protect and defend every inch of Allied territory. The VJTF is NATO’s first responder and a key part of our collective defence. Germany’s leadership is a strong display of its commitment and capabilities,” Lungescu said.
The VJTF is the highestreadiness element of NATO’s Response Force. VJTF leadership and membership rotate annually among Allies. In 2023, VJTF land forces will comprise around 11,500 thousand troops, with the Panzergrenadierbrigade 37 at its core. In total, nine NATO Allies (Belgium, Czech Republik, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia) will contribute. Among the major units are Germany’s Panzerbataillon 393, Artillerielehrbataillon 345, Versorgungsbataillon 131 and Transporthubschrauberregiment 30. For the first time, Germany also leads the VJTF’s designated Special Forces command.
FORT HOOD, Texas — The 302nd Squadron of the Royal Netherlands Air Force took delivery of two new AH-64E Apache Guardian attack helicopters at Robert Gray Army Air Field, Dec. 13, 2022.
During a ceremony in the unit’s hangar, the two new AH-64E Apache Guardian’s logbooks were handed over to the unit commander. The new Apaches are the first two that will be operated by the unit at Fort Hood. The 302nd Squadron will be responsible for the training of current and future pilots, as well as maintenance
technicians in the coming years.
“This is just the start of a new era,” explained Dutch Lt. Col. Wilko de Waard, commander of the 302nd Squadron of the Royal Netherlands Air Force. “Having these aircraft over here makes us the first one to train aircrew maintenance personnel to get to the point where they can operate in multi-domain operations.”
The Dutch squadron commander added that the upgraded aircraft are better able to integrate with newer systems, both fixed wing and unmanned aircraft systems.
The Dutch have operated the D-model Apaches since 1998. Delivery of remanufactured E-model Apaches represents the next step in this longterm part -
nership. Apache aircraft continue to play an essential role in European defense and are currently operated by several European allied nations.
“It’s not like buying a new system and just replacing the old ones,” de Waard stated. “We’re handing in the old Deltas, and they are being remanufactured to these Echoes, while the Air Force is still counting on our training mission.”
The AH-64E v6 is the most modern configuration of the Apache attack helicopter. Since 1984, more than 2,600 Apache helicopters have been delivered to the U.S. Army and 17 international customers. Currently, there are more than 1,260 Apaches operating worldwide with more than 665 representing the E-model.
Sunday Starting at 11:00 am & 6 pm Wednesday 6:30 pm
Three Kings Day, or the Feast of the Epiphany (“Épiphanie” in French, “Driekoningen” in Dutch and “Heilige Drei Könige” in German), is a Christian religious celebration commemorating the end of the traditional 12 days of Christmas. Observed on Jan. 6, the day celebrates the story of the three kings (also referred to as Magi or wise men) following the Star of Bethlehem to the child, Jesus, seen as the embodiment of God.
While largely observed by Catholics, some Protestants also partake in Three Kings Day traditions. The centuries-old celebration is not a public holiday in Belgium, the Netherlands or the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, but is still widely recognized throughout the region.
During Three Kings Day, Families, friends and colleagues often enjoy a specially baked king cake or bread (“galette des rois” in French, “driekoningentaart” in Dutch and “dreikönigskuchen” in German). Sharing the cake is a competition to see who will be
named the king or queen of the day by finding the “fève,” or little figurine, inside.
In Belgium, layers of puff pastry are filled with sweet frangipane, or almond cream, and the cake is sold with a crown to be worn by the finder of the hidden fève. The figurine is often a porcelain animal or Disney character - to the delight of participating children. Sometimes uncooked beans are used — two white and one dark— with the finder of the dark bean being crowned king. Epiphany cakes can be found in supermarkets and bakeries.
In the U.S., this Epiphany cake is reminiscent of the Mardi Gras king cake, best known in New Orleans, Louisiana. The carnival season there begins on Jan. 6, when the cake is first served, and runs until Ash Wednesday. Frosted with purple, yellow, and green, this bakery sweet also hides a figurine inside it — often a miniature plastic baby. The finder of the figurine is pronounced to have good luck for the remainder of the year and is also sometimes required to buy the next cake or throw a party.
While the cakes serve as a cen-
tral tradition in many households, they aren’t the only way Three Kings Day is celebrated.
In parts of Germany, young children can be seen in Magi costumes singing and walking in village neighborhoods collecting money for charities and writing in chalk the date and letters C + M + B on the door posts of homes. The letters written in chalk historically came from the Latin phrase “Christus mansionem benedicat” which means “Christ bless this house,” but now are more often referred to as the names of the three kings: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar.
This tradition is also recognized at Chièvres Air Base and SHAPE, Belgium, where two Catholic priests from Germany and SHAPE Chaplain (Maj.) Bernardino Yebra will conduct door post blessings for offices on both installations on Jan 6.
In the Netherlands, primary schools commonly host plays or skits about the wise men and their travel to meet the baby Jesus. Children dress up in costumes as the Magi, King Herod, shepherds, Mary, Joseph and even animals to reenact the Bible story.

From snow-topped Bavarian Alps in the south to frozen lakes in the north and snow-covered forests in the east, there isn’t a corner of Bavaria that isn’t worth a visit while you are stationed overseas. You can also expect a very warm and hearty Bavarian welcome wherever you go. Here are ten great trips for making the most out of winter in Bavaria:
1. Edelweiss Lodge & Resort, GarmischPartenkirchen
Start the new year living your life to the fullest! Make a resolution to spend more time with the family, learn to ski and to have more fun this year.
2. Spend a weekend in Munich
You will certainly never forget a city weekend in Munich. Three days in Munich is the perfect amount of time to explore the capital of Bavaria.
3. Discover Regensburg — a medieval miracle
Discover “Germany’s medieval miracle” while strolling through narrow streets with tiny shops, broad squares, and numerous pavement cafés and markets.
4. Get cozy in the Bavarian Alps
The Explorer Hotel Oberstdorf and Explorer Hotel Neuschwanstein are modern budget hotels located in the Bavarian
Alps. Both locations offer a beautiful weekend in the snow with the option to ski or just explore the surrounding mountains.
5. Relive the middle ages in Rothenburg
Experience the old Imperial town of Rothenburg, often referred to as “Franconian Jerusalem,” and rediscover the German Middle Ages.
6. Enjoy beer tasting in Bamberg
On the BierSchmecker beer-tasting trip you will explore the cultural heritage of Bamberg’s beer. Enjoy a leisurely stroll from selected brewery to brewery, if you can manage it!
7. Relive King Ludwig’s winter dream in Fuessen
The most beautiful sight in the world: Neuschwanstein Palace set against a backdrop of snow-covered Alpine peaks, usually with a clear deep blue sky behind it. Try a winter taster package that combines winter hiking with sightseeing and healthboosting winter wellness.
8. Taste hops and malt in Nürnberg Nuremberg has been an important brewing city for centuries. Whether it is pale ale, dark beer or a genuine red beer, there is something for everyone’s taste.
9. Altoetting and Oberammergau in the
footsteps of emperors, kings and popes
Try a scenic tour in the footsteps of Emperors, Kings and Popes, which offers the best overview of the most famous religious sights in Southern Bavaria. This one is perfect for a small group travelling together.
10. Experience Bavaria’s best winter shopping
Where to start – there are so many opportunities! You can find great experiences in Nuremburg, Munich and Würzburg. But the truth is that nearly every town in Bavaria will offer a wonderful winter experience, so wherever you go it will be truly magical.
