US F-16s strengthen air policing mission with long-planned Poland deployment by Allied Air Command Public Affairs Office U.S. F-16 aircraft landed in Łask, Poland, on Jan. 4 to work with the Polish Baltic Air Policing F-16s in Siauliai, Lithuania, and enhanced Air Policing Belgian F-16s in Amari, Estonia. The Belgian, Polish and U.S. fighters will practice advanced airborne manoeuvres and work closely with Combined Air Operations Centre Uedem to enhance Command and Control procedures. This detachment in Eastern Europe is designed to improve interoperability among the Allies and rehearse the rapid deployment of aircraft to alternate bases. “The supplemental U.S. fighters will provide improved capabilities in the region and demonstrate a seamless integration

into the long standing Baltic and enhanced Air Policing mis-
sions,” said Brigadier General Joel Carey, Allied Air Command
Deputy Chief of Staff Operations. “These deployments demon-
strate the Alliance’s ability to rapidly and effectively deploy assets to vital regions to assure partners and safeguard Allied airspace,” he added. The U.S. fighters will complete routine Air Policing qualification prior to participating in the Air Policing activities. CAOCUE oversees all Air Policing missions in the Baltic Region and directs any scrambles against unknown aircraft. Since 2014, the NATO Alliance has implemented Assurance Measures with the goal to assure the Allies along the eastern flank. One tool in this set of measures is the concept of enhanced Air Policing, which demonstrates NATO’s solidarity, collective resolve, and its ability to adapt and scale its defensive missions and deterrence posture in response to an evolving security situation.
Department of the Air Force reaches 95% total force vaccination rate by Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs Dec. 2, 2021, marked the Department of the Air Force’s deadline for Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve Airmen to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. This final deadline for Department of the Air Force service members to be fully vaccinated resulted in more than 95% of the total force having at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose. “Thank you to each total force Airman who has met the responsibility to get vaccinated,” said Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall. “To those yet to get vaccinated, the order is clear — take action now or be held accountable for failing to do so. This is about being ready to defend the nation, as well as protecting ourselves, our teammates, and our loved ones.” Since the Secretary of Defense’s vaccination mandate Aug. 24, the Department of the Air Force set the most aggressive timelines amongst the military services to ensure total force members are protected. “The health and wellbeing

of our Reserve citizen Airmen is a readiness issue,” said Lt. Gen. Richard Scobee, chief of the Air Force Reserve and commander of the Air Force Reserve Command. “By meeting this deadline, our Airmen are ready to execute the mission anywhere in the world, even in places where the COVID-19
vaccination rates are low and disease transmission is high.” Across the nation, Guard and Reserve Airmen were directly involved in administering vaccines to their active component and civilian counterparts as each respective deadline approached. “By taking an aggressive
approach to vaccination, we are ensuring the health and readiness of the force,” said Under Secretary of the Air Force Gina Ortiz Jones. “Ultimately, we have to overcome this pandemic that’s taken the lives of over 700,000 of our fellow Americans. We’ve got to be mission ready — we’ve got to be vaccinated.”
COVID-19 screening tests are required weekly for all individuals entering a Department of Defense facility who are not fully vaccinated, including those who have an exemption request under review or who are exempted from the COVID-19 vaccination. “Being vaccinated maintains our total force readiness that our nation depends on,” said Lt. Gen. Michael A. Loh, Air National Guard director. “This vaccine ensures our success with our national defense missions. By taking this aggressive approach for vaccination, we are able to protect those around us, and maintain a ready and able force.” Units will be responsible for running self-test programs and may reach out to either the Defense Logistics Agency Contact Center or their servicing Military Treatment Facility for assistance with ordering and purchasing the self-test kits. CMSAF Bass visits West Africa, historic first by Senior Airman Ericka Woolever 435th Air Expeditionary Wing
NIAMEY, Niger — Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force JoAnne S. Bass recently visited West Africa, Dec. 20-22, 2021, marking the first time she has visited the region since assuming her position as Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force. “Africa is an emerging front for the Strategic Competition,” said Bass. “The United States, more than any other nation, can point to a strong history of partnership with African nations, and it’s gained us credibility as the preferred partner in Africa. A lot of that trust building is a result of our Airmen’s efforts.” The U.S. has two cooperative security locations in Niger; Air Base 101, Niamey and Air Base 201, Agaedez. During her 3-day visit, Bass met with U.S. Airmen and joint force mission partners to gain firsthand knowledge of how Airmen deter and defeat violent extremism in Sahel to enable a more secure, stable, and prosperous Africa. “In 2020, the Sahel saw a 44 percent increase in violent events in the region,” said Col. Daniel Kobs, commander 409th Air Expeditionary Group. “The threat is real. Our partnerships in West Africa, now more than ever, are key to the counterviolent extremist organization fight. Our Airmen are critical to enabling our partner forces and building trust within the region.” As one of two groups falling under
the 435th Air Expeditionary Wing, the 409th Air Expeditionary Group supports intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions, remotely piloted aircraft launch and recovery and base support for U.S. forces in Niger while working closely with and enabling their Nigerien Armed Forces counterparts. “Our Airmen supporting our AFRICOM mission are incredible,” said Bass, “We’re asking them to think strategically and execute tactically while combating violent extremist operations, building partner capacity, and strengthening African security institutions to meet shared security goals. This is the human element at its finest, they are at the heart of this mission.” While U.S. forces have been in Niger, on and off, for more than 20 years, the unique geographic and logistical challenges of Africa remain, demanding real time critical thinking and innovative solutions. “The continent of Africa introduces a lot of unique operational challenges,” said Chief Master Sgt. Corey Crow, 435th Air Ground Operations Wing and 435th Air Expeditionary Wing command chief. “Whether its communications, air transportation, logistics, or things we’d think are simple such as potable water, our Airmen in Africa are constantly finding innovative solutions with limited resources to deliver secure, reliable, flexible expeditionary air power capabilities for combatant commanders.”

Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force JoAnne S. Bass speaks to joint service members during a holiday visit at Nigerien Air Base 201, Agadez, Dec. 21, 2021. During her visit to AB 201, Bass addressed the importance of how the U.S. Air Force must develop and build deep institutional understanding of our strategic competitors, and reward and retain Airmen who foster the personal attributes necessary for success.
Airmen of the 435th AEW provide a critical piece of the U.S.’s whole of government approach which leverages diplomacy, development, and defense to support and enable capable, responsive African governments; an effort that has
implications not only within Africa but worldwide. “Global competitors recognize Africa’s importance to their strategic interests, but their interest is more akin to exploitation than mutual cooperation” said Bass.
“Our Airmen in Niger have more than demonstrated U.S. commitment to helping our African partners create opportunities for economic and political stability and security. That’s a win and its credit to every Airman in Africa.”

Updated COVID testing requirements for “official travel” to United States
An Army officer assigned to U.S. Army Europe and Africa in Wiesbaden, undergoes a COVID test recently. The CDC has issued updated guidance for COVID testing requirements for military personnel who are on official travel orders departing for the United States from Europe. Courtesy photo
by Kirk Frady Regional Health Command Europe As you may have seen in the news, a new COVID testing requirement for inbound air travel to the U.S. went into effect on Dec. 6 requiring all air travelers to receive a negative COVID test no more than one-day prior to departure for the U.S. However, the CDC recently updated their guidance, and U.S. military personnel, civilian employees, dependents, contractors, and other U.S. government employees are exempt from the new one-day testing requirement of the original CDC Order if they are traveling on official military travel orders. This exemption applies to persons on official military orders on U.S. military flights (including whole aircraft contract charter operators) and non-U.S. military flights (e.g., commercial flights). As such, these individuals are exempt from the one-day testing requirement and are, thereby, allowed to conduct their COVID tests 72 hours (three days) prior to their departure from Europe, accordance with DoD Force Health
Protection Guidance Supplement 20, dated April 12, 2021. The CDC recommends that individuals on official travel carry their applicable travel orders with them to present to air carrier/operator personnel or public health authorities. It should be noted, the one-day testing exemption only applies to U.S.-based carriers. Those individuals not traveling on official orders, remain subject to CDC’s one-day testing requirements.
If the local MTF is unable to meet official travel testing needs, official travelers should seek testing off-post or at international airports. Due to recent changes made to the Joint Travel Regulation, COVID tests for official travel are now a reimbursable expense. Individuals should check with their local medical treatment facility for information about COVID testing services and capabilities for official travel purposes.

Air Force accelerates change to save lives:
How aeromedical evacuation mission advanced in 20 years by Shireen Bedi Air Force Surgeon General Public Affairs In the years following the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, U.S. Air Force medics accelerated advancements in medical care, specifically aeromedical evacuations, to save more service members’ lives. The Air Force’s aeromedical evacuation capability is part of a joint medical evacuation system with the U.S. Army. This system allows injured service members to be quickly moved from the battlefield to a theater hospital where they receive additional care until they are ready for aeromedical evacuation. The Air Force’s aeromedical evacuation capabilities have been critical in significantly improving the chance of survival and leading to a record high survivability rate. According to a 2014 research article published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the ability for medics to move patients to higher levels of care has played a key role leading to historically low mortality rates compared to previous conflicts. During the Vietnam War, patient movements from the theater to advanced levels of care took approximately 45 days. This time has been reduced to as little as 36 hours. “One of our key joint capabilities is aeromedical evacuation, and in the last 20 years we have seen rapid advancements of this capability like we have not seen before,” said Lt. Gen. Robert I Miller, U.S. Air Force Surgeon General. “Patients we would have never thought to transport on an aircraft in prior conflicts are now transported with advanced care. The incredible skills of our aeromedical evacuation and specialty teams, and their ability to push our capabilities even further, has saved more lives.” From rapid advancement in skillsets of medical Airmen to advancements in en route medical technology, aeromedical evacuations have seen a remarkable evolution to ensure more service members can come home safely. Uniquely capable Airmen It is obvious the back of a cargo aircraft is nothing like a full-fledged hospital with all the support and materials most medical professionals are familiar with in a brick and mortar hospital or clinic. Despite the difference, Air Force medics are tasked with delivering the same, high-level care in the air as they are on the ground. These medics have to be prepared to treat patients with a wide
Globemaster III. The CCATT completing this 20-hour, non-stop evacuation required the team to provide continuous monitoring throughout the flight. Additionally, this flight required refueling along the way, adding another challenge to the mission. Refueling during an aeromedical evacuation is uncommon since it can cause additional turbulence, but it was vital for the Soldier to get to specialized care as soon as possible. The strenuous conditions this team worked under to save a Soldier’s life is exactly what they are trained to do.

range of medical concerns and severity of injury. Air Force medics receive specialized training to expand their expeditionary medical skills and aeromedical skills to work within the challenging environment of an aircraft. Aeromedical evacuation crews have the skills, experience and training to consider the various challenges and limitations to treating a range of patients. Treating injured patients can be stressful at a fully staffed hospital, but aeromedical evacuation crews also deal with loud noises, varied elevation, turbulence, temperatures and limited space. “We have been able to elevate our training platforms by providing our medical professionals with clinical experience at trauma centers throughout the United States,” said Chief Master Sgt. James Woods, 711th Human Performance Wing’s senior enlisted advisor. “Improvements in medical simulator technology and access to various aircraft trainers have allowed the AFMS to provide top notch medical training and validation. In addition to classroom and simulation labs, we are now also able to run scenarios in almost any environment our medics could see themselves in.” Woods also explains that advancements in training sharpened the skills of aeromedical evacuation medics, leading to much of the high survival rate seen in the past two decades. “Experience, increased training and medical advancements have now made it almost routine to fly with patients with certain conditions that
20 years ago would be frowned upon in the en route care community,” said Woods. The ability to respond to immediate needs was particularly critical during Operation Allies Refuge when Air Force medics worked to get Afghan evacuees out while also attending to a wide range of medical concerns. Medics monitored Afghans who had dehydration and malnutrition. On one flight, one evacuee gave birth shortly before landing. Adaptability is key for aeromedical evacuation crews and critical care air transport teams. Medics are trained to deliver care on the C-17 Globemaster III, C-130 Hercules, as well as on aircraft usually designated for aerial refueling, like the KC-46 Pegasus and KC-135 Stratotanker. In July 2020, Airmen assigned to the 931st Air Refueling Squadron and the 22nd Air Maintenance Squadron took part in the KC-46 Pegasus’ inaugural aeromedical evacuation training. This flight included two flight nurses and three medical technicians, who learned how to configure this new aircraft and use their existing aeromedical evacuation skills to provide high quality patient care. “I have transported patients on multiple airframes to include rotary, small aircraft, large aircraft and other aircraft of opportunity,” said Col. Tory Woodard, U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine commander. “Throughout my 24-year career, I have seen the rapid increase in our capabilities and the survivability of the complex cases our enroute care teams support. I am continuously impressed
by our medics and the amazing things they accomplish.” Advancements in CCATT The development of the critical care air transport team, or CCATT, in 1994 enabled the Air Force to bolster its aeromedical evacuation capabilities, allowing more critically ill or severely ill patients to be transported to higher levels of care. “With about 750 pounds of hightech medical equipment, the threeperson teams…ensure there’s no lapse in care during transport,” said retired Lt. Gen. Charles B. Green, former U.S. Air Force Surgeon General. “The teams speed up the patient movement to increasingly more advanced care.” Working as highly specialized medics, CCATTs augment aeromedical evacuation teams and essentially turn any cargo aircraft into a flying intensive care unit. Each team includes a critical care physician, a respiratory therapist and a critical care nurse. According to a 2014 study on Air Force CCATTs, despite having to transport more patients who sustained significant, critical injuries, the en route mortality rate was less than 1 percent. The researchers who published this study explained that the reason for this is the role CCATTs play as a component in the entire continuum of care, from the battlefield to more definitive care. In 2019, a CCATT embarked on the longest aeromedical evacuation mission, moving a critically injured Soldier more than 8,000 miles, through a combat zone, from Afghanistan to Texas, aboard a C-17
Expanding the AE Platform Amid Operation Iraqi Freedom, from 2003 and 2011, patients were often moved in a harsh and highthreat environment. This required a strategic and effective medical evacuation system to ensure patients could move from the point of injury to higher levels of care as quickly and safely as possible. Patients were transported via Army or Marine Corps helicopter to field clinics where ground medical teams would stabilize the patient for aeromedical evacuation. The Air Force’s aeromedical evacuation crews and CCATTs would move them to theater hospitals and prepare them for a longer flight to higher levels care. To sustain the amount and type of patients requiring medical evacuation, the Air Force moved away from dedicated aircraft, to aircraft of opportunity. Now, medics are able to use essentially any available cargo aircraft, configured with standardized medical equipment and staffed with medical professionals to provide timely, efficient patient movement. While intended for cargo, these aircraft are equipped with features that meet the demands of ever-evolving en route patient care. “We now have access to more airframes that have electrical and oxygen systems that make it easier to transport more patients or higher acuity patients,” said Woods. “Something we wouldn’t have seen 20 years ago.” Used as a tactical, intra-theater aeromedical evacuation platform, the C-130 Hercules has been described as a workhorse. It is reliable for extensive operations in theater and capable of operations from short and unimproved runways. This allows for medical capabilities to be pushed closer to the front lines. With the ability to access the aircraft’s power and integrate a carry-on oxygen system, the C-130’s cabin design helps reduce the negative impact of altitude on patients. Faster and more flexible, the C-17
Kaiserslautern American
January 14, 2022 Globemaster III offered medics the ability to bring warfighters to higher levels. The C-17 boasts 77 more feet than the C-130 Hercules and a cruising speed of 515 knots, allowing for the transport of more patients and life-saving medical equipment. Builtin attachments for central oxygen, electric systems lighting and environmental controls on the C-17 helped improve survival rates for even the most critical patients. With the inclusion of KC-135s in 2003, medics were able to increase the volume of evacuations out of Afghanistan. While these aircraft do not provide the temperature control of C-17s and also require liquid oxygen to be brought aboard, they provide additional capability when operations tempos are high. Since the KC-46’s inaugural mission on July 10, 2020, Airmen have also been able to transport patients on it. In addition to being able to provide fuel, it also boasts increased lighting, electrical power and storage capacity. “Aeromedical evacuation experts are involved with the design of new aircraft that will be supporting the aeromedical evacuation mission,” said Col. Kathleen Grimm, chief, Clinical Readiness Operations, En Route Care Training Department, U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine. “Having input on the KC-46 from the start allowed us to work closely with the larger team and industry partners and ensure its success in supporting these missions.” A key component to the Air Force’s aeromedical evacuation success is the advancement of medical equipment necessary to monitor and care for patients in flight, especially when transporting a critically ill or injured patient. As mentioned earlier, the back of a cargo aircraft can be noisy, dark, and cramped. The equipment aeromedical evacuation crews and CCATTs use have to work under these conditions. “My first deployment was in October of 2001 and our equipment sets were extremely heavy for a threeperson team, making it challenging to be mobile in an austere environment,” said Woods. “Since then, our equipment and allowance standards have gotten lighter, leaner and more technologically advanced, matching the quality of what our medical professionals use in their military treatment facilities.” In the earlier phases of Operation Enduring Freedom, medics were seeing patients experiencing injuries impacting their lungs and who were failing on ventilator support. To sustain these critical patients in flight, Air Force medics adapted the use of the existing extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation, or ECMO, machine. ECMO was originally used on infants and children requiring cardiac and
respiratory support, but it was not until October 21, 2010, that an ECMO machine was used on an adult. That day, a Soldier with wounds impacting his lungs was transported from Afghanistan to Germany. Now, ECMO, a capability exclusive to the 59th Medical Wing, is fully equipped to deploy globally when needed. One capability that has been developed to address limited space is the development of a multi-channel wound vacuum system, a device critical to treating trauma wounds. With the multi-channel wound vacuum system, medics can use one device to treat multiple wounds on a patient. This limits the need for multiple devices to be placed on one patient, saving space, power and weight, making it easier to monitor the patient. Another significant obstacle aeromedical evacuation crews have to work around is noise, making it challenging to communicate. This makes the stethoscope, one of the most recognizable tools of the medical profession, nearly useless on the back of an aircraft. To address this, researchers with the 711th Human Performance Wing, which is part of the Air Force Research Lab at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, are evaluating the use of a digital noise-immune stethoscope. This stethoscope can plug into existing headsets aeromedical evacuation crews already use and would provide them with another capability to monitor their patient. “Our monitoring devices and other medical instruments have been forced to be more lightweight, durable, and longer lasting than ever before because of the continual demands in deployed environments,” said Lt. Col. Derek M. Sorensen, medical director, Initial In Flight Care Training Division, U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine. “We continue to advance these with secure interconnectivity and a robust electronic health record to provide safe patient care.” The COVID-19 pandemic supercharged the need to advance aeromedical evacuation capabilities and procedures to keep both patients and aircrew safe while also mitigating infections. To begin quickly transporting COVID-19 patients, the Air Force initially relied on a capability that was ready for use, the Transportation Isolation System, or TIS. The TIS was originally developed in 2014 in response to Ebola and the need to be prepared to move patients with a contagious or infectious disease safely. The TIS was the only one of its kind in the entire Department of Defense, and Air Force medics were trained on procedures for years leading up to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was not until COVID-19 that the Air Force deployed the TIS on its first operational mission. On April 10, 2020, three patients who tested
positive for COVID-19 were transported from Afghanistan to Ramstein. Two TIS modules were placed on the back of a C-17 Globemaster III and manned with a TIS-trained aeromedical evacuation crew and specialty medical team. While the TIS worked in the initial COVID-19 response, it could only move two to four patients. The reality was that COVID-19 was rapidly spreading and more patients required evacuation. This created a demand for a new solution. After only a few months, the Negatively Pressurized Conex became operational on July 1, 2020, moving 12 patients on its first mission. The NPC can move up to 28 passengers, 23 ambulatory patients, or eight litters, and is configured for the C-17 Globemaster III and the C-5 Super Galaxy. A smaller variation of the NPC, the NPC-lite, was certified later for the C-130. The NPC proved to be a valuable capability to move patients safely, it mitigated the spread of COVID-19, and allowed for medics to safely monitor and treat patients while in isolation. “I had the opportunity to work through the first iteration of transitioning from treating infectious patients in place to moving them to get care,” said Grimm. “Working with the design team for the TIS from concept to delivery in six months was amazing. Now to see the advancements to the NPC and NPC-lite, improving upon what we built and the guidance we wrote for the TIS is another example of the evolution of en route care.” Future of AE Air Force medics have proved their success and expertise in large-scale conflicts, pushing them to the forefront of en route trauma care. Future contingencies are not likely to look like the ones experienced in the last two decades, and the AFMS continues to look forward and remain ready to adjust its aeromedical evacuation capabilities to meet those needs. “We need to prepare ourselves to potentially deliver prolonged care in austere environments or be ready to move more patients at once in the future, as we may not always have the ability to rapidly transport patients with the timing and the teams we desire at that exact moment,” said Miller. “So, our aeromedical capabilities need to continue to remain responsive, flexible and ready today for tomorrow’s demands.”

Sunny Anderson, former Air Force broadcaster, now a Food Network star by David Vergun Department of Defense News
Before she became a celebrity chef on Food Network’s “The Kitchen,” Sunny Anderson was an Air Force broadcast journalist. Anderson, born in Lawton, Oklahoma, April 9, 1975, grew up as an Army brat, which is an endearing term for children of active-duty parents. She moved from place to place around the world. She said that experience allowed her to sample many local cuisines with her parents who were enthusiastic eaters of international cuisines. After graduating from Madison High School in San Antonio, Texas, she joined the Air Force in June 1993, and served as a military radio host in Seoul, South Korea. She then worked for Air Force News Agency radio and television in San Antonio from 1993 to 1997. Anderson was honorably discharged from the Air Force in June 1997 as a senior airman. In 2011, Anderson visited Fort Lee, Virginia, home of the Defense Department’s Joint Culinary Center of Excellence. Her goal was to showcase the great work of the multiservice culinary instructors

and students. She gave words of encouragement to the students as they chopped, sliced and diced their way through their food preparation testing. After eating a healthy portion
of the chow that the students had prepared, she noted that it was completely different than when she was in the military years earlier. Anderson said the quality of the field rations and the preparation of them had really improved.

Some of her career highlights: Between 1995 and 2001, Anderson worked as a radio personality at KCJZ and KONO-FM in San Antonio; WYLD-FM and KUMX in Fort Polk, Louisiana; WJWZ in Montgomery, Alabama;
and WDTJ in Detroit, Michigan. Anderson moved to New York City in 2001 and worked as a radio personality for “HOT 97” (WQHT) from 2001 to 2003. From 2003 to 2005, she was the owner of Sunny’s Delicious Dishes, a catering company based in Jersey City, New Jersey. She began hosting “How’d That Get On My Plate?” in July 2008. She also began hosting the Food Network program “Cooking for Real” in April 2008, and she served as co-host with Marc Istook of the Food Network program “Gotta Get It,” starting in April 2007. In 2006 and 2007, she was the Food and Lifestyle Editor for “Hip Hop Weekly” magazine. In January 2014, Anderson became a co-host on the Food Network’s series “The Kitchen,” along with Jeff Mauro, Katie Lee, Marcela Valladolid and Geoffrey Zakarian. The show is currently in its 27th season. Anderson has been a guest chef on several talk shows and morning news programs including “The Rachael Ray Show,” “Good Morning America,” “The Early Show,” “The View,” “The Talk,” and “The Wendy Williams Show.”

US, Polish EOD have blast
Members of the Polish Army’s 16th Airfield Renovation Battalion Explosive Ordnance Disposal team and U.S. Air Force Airmen from the 786th Civil Engineer Squadron conduct post-blast analysis during training at Ramstein Air Base, Dec. 14, 2021. This was the first time the 786 CES Airmen hosted the Polish EOD team for training, which typically occurs in Poland.
Story and photos by Airman Edgar Grimaldo 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Throughout the course of four days, the 786th Civil Engineer Squadron Explosive Ordnance Disposal team welcomed the Polish Army 16th Airfield Renovation Battalion EOD team to Ramstein Air Base, Dec. 13-17, 2021. “Engineering dynamic partnerships with our North Atlantic Treaty Organization allies really allows us to learn how our allied nations think and practice,” said Airman 1st Class Matthew Haber, 786 CES EOD team lead. “This drives us to become expert operators in our field. Not
only making us better as a flight, but allowing us to ensure air lethality and stay ready for any mission.” While the exercises are normally held in Poland, the 786 CES EOD team had the opportunity to host the training this year for the first time. “Exercises such as these are the driving force for strengthening relationships throughout NATO and building partnerships throughout Europe,” said Winter. “This is one of the ways we accomplish that. Not only do we go out and work and learn skills from them, but we also bring them out here to show them the way we do things, increasing interoperability.”
The battalion was given a refresher course on multiple skills, such as clearing runways, demonstrations on shape charges and post-blast courses to name a few. They also were sent through multiple scenarios in their kill house. The kill house is an intricate facility packed with a multitude of traps ranging from tripwires to light-sensitive traps. “Working with the Polish has been very good and informative,” said Winter. “Their EOD program is relatively young and it’s interesting seeing how they are developing. They got here and hit the ground running.”

AFSBn-Benelux pays tribute to fallen employee with Humvee transport to final resting place by Cameron Porter 405th AFSB Public Affairs EYGELSHOVEN, Netherlands — The team at Army Field Support Battalion-Benelux paid fitting tribute to one of their own recently as a sign of respect and admiration. To honor his legacy of service and pay respects to him and his family, the 405th Army Field Support Brigade’s AFSBn-Benelux transported Wiel Hendriks via Humvee to his final resting place at Kerkrade, Netherlands, Dec. 17. Hendriks served 35 years with the U.S. Army in the Netherlands, first in Schinnen and then in Eygelshoven. The Dutch Ministry of Defense employee who worked as a heavy wheeled mechanic at the 405th AFSB’s Army Prepositioned Stock-2 worksite in Eygelshoven had a final request before his death. He wanted to have his body carried by Humvee, his favorite Army vehicle, to a location where his family, coworkers and life-long friends could pay their last respects.
Martin Van Dijk, the best friend and a fellow co-worker of Wiel Hendriks, secures Hendriks’ casket to the back of a Humvee. and to the parks. He invited us to dinner and introduced us to Dutch food.” “My girls were ages 3, 6 and 8 at the time,” said Ortiz. “I told them Wiel (Hendriks) was their Dutch grandpa, and to this day they still believe it.” Born in Nieuwenhagen, Netherlands, on Christmas Eve in 1955, Hendriks had the personality of Santa Claus — always giving and so caring of others. He was also an expert at his technical craft. “One time he asked me about a broken seatbelt on a vehicle,” Ortiz said. “I was quite surprised Wiel (Hendriks) was able to disassemble the seat belt mechanism and repair it instead of taking the easy route and replacing it with a new one.” “That was really my first introduction to him at work, and I was very impressed, as is everyone at our APS-2 site,” said Ortiz. Martin Van Dijk is a coworker of Hendriks’ at APS-2 Eygelshoven who has always been impressed by his friend. They started working for the Army together in 1986. When Hendriks was placed in the back of the Humvee, it was Dijk who assisted with securing his casket. Dijk also helped with the authorization process, as did Ortiz and others. They were able to secure chain of command approval to use the Humvee and Dutch Department of Motor Vehicle authorization to transport Hendriks to his final resting place in the Army truck. Dijk said Hendriks’ last request was to travel by Humvee and his last words were “remember me, remember me in the shining sun — how I was when I could do everything.” The 405th AFSB is assigned to U.S. Army Sustainment Command and under the operational control of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, U.S. Army Europe and Africa. Face of Defense: Teaching young athletes to ‘Unite and Believe’
Beyond winning Ramirez, the father of two boys, says kids generally quit soccer because “their coach or their parent or the club owner is too hard. … They don’t teach them the fundamentals, they just teach them to win, win, win. That’s everyone’s mindset everywhere I’ve played, you win or you’re not a good player.” He hopes to help change the culture around soccer in his hometown of Frederick, Maryland, and establish a respected soccer club that goes against the grain of turning away players who don’t meet certain height and weight criteria. “I wanted to basically give chances to the kids that never got the chance or … will get to that chance and they’ll get turned away because they didn’t meet those strict categories,” Ramirez said. Aside from this, Ramirez recognizes even the best players may face financial barriers that prevent them from playing, and he aims to provide kids who may not be able to afford it with the opportunity to play. “That’s why I started this,” said Ramirez. “I want to get to a point where, as an owner, I’m able to pay for my players to play for me.” Soccer, he said, is about unity. “Our motto is ‘unite and believe,’ which means unite the community and then have every player that’s on a team believe they can make it to the next level.” Drill Sergeant Coach Kicking skills up a notch requires discipline, something Ramirez is well acquainted with through his military service. “I used to be that guy who didn’t have discipline on the field,” said Ramirez. “I was basically angry all the time, losing, and then [joining] the military helped me open my eyes,
Demonstrating discipline Ramirez joined the Guard in 2020, and quickly had the opportunity to demonstrate his character and work ethic on a critical mission:
supporting Maryland’s COVID-19 response. The mission brought him to the Wicomico Civic Center testing site in Salisbury, Maryland, where his unit wore many hats each day. “Some of us were on guard duty, some of us were the first person you saw when you walked in,” said Ramirez, who works as a security guard when not activated. “Some of us were actually with the nurses.” Regardless of the task, Ramirez worked with diligence and enthusiasm. “He’s very good with direction,” said Army Spc. Jordan Jackson, a light-wheeled vehicle mechanic for the 29th Military Police Company. “The quality of his work is very good.” Family feeling As he continues to grow, Ramirez is also looking to expand his soccer club into a multi-sport organization in 2022. For him, the same bonds that connect a military unit also make a great sports team. “Every day when we break out, we always say ‘family’ because that’s what we are now,” he said. “You can’t be the best team if you’re not close together.”

The soccer field has been a place of serenity for Army Pfc. Joel Ramirez since he was a young boy. “There’s something about those lights, the turf, when you walk on; it’s like everything goes away,” said Ramirez, a soldier with the Maryland Army National Guard’s 29th Military Police Company. “It’s peaceful because all that matters is you, the ball, your team and the game.” Seeing the fields he’s played on since childhood stand empty because of the COVID-19 pandemic inspired Ramirez to start Skyline City Club de Futbol to give young athletes who have lost their passion for soccer a space to play again.
like, ‘Hey, it’s not just about you.’ That’s one thing I’m drilling into my player’s heads.” Understanding the importance of self discipline is what inspired Ramirez — known as “drill sergeant coach” by his players — to join the National Guard. Motivated by a childhood of bonding with his mother over crime dramas, Ramirez initially set out to become a police officer. His first attempt at the entrance exam was not successful, but the process introduced him to numerous veterans and National Guard members also trying to get into the police academy. Their discipline encouraged him to enlist in the military instead. “I knew serving would help me with my discipline and help me grow as a man, as I am now,” Ramirez said. “I joined the Army to serve and to grow myself and my family. … A lot of people told me when you join the military, it’s a brotherhood, a family, and I’m big on family.”

Big, ‘Boldt’ colors: SHAPE artist distinguishes herself internationally Story and photos by Bryan Gatchell U.S. Army Garrison Benelux Public Affairs MONS, Belgium – A large green dragon has recently made the Arts and Crafts Center its home. Residing on what had been a large, blank wall, the dragon curls through a mural depicting downtown Mons amid splashes of the black, yellow and red of the Belgian flag and a large NATO logo. The mural is the work of Jess Boldt, a Family member and artist at SHAPE, who has been honing her skills and growing her portfolio since her arrival to the area in 2019. Boldt and her husband, U.S. Air Force Maj. Jarod Boldt, a staff officer with NATO, moved from California to Belgium in 2019 with two of their four children. Boldt began a one-year program online through the Milan Art Institute before she moved from California to Belgium. “I brought all my painting supplies,” she said. “Every week I had a class. But it really was helpful, because it kind of just helped give me some sanity on all the craziness of moving.” She said that her children would often complain of the strong smell of the oil-based paints in their lodging before they found housing. Boldt is a mixed media artist, combining charcoal, old print, and more. In line with her ambitions as a muralist, she prefers spray paint to other material. “I like the idea of uplifting people’s moods in everyday life,” said Boldt. “So I plan on being a traveling muralist, going to places and helping businesses bring to light what they do and bringing art to the community — the everyday community — and still bringing fine art to galleries and expos.” She graduated her one-year pro-
Muralist and SHAPE Family member Jess Boldt stands against her work at the SHAPE Arts and Crafts Center at SHAPE near Mons, Belgium Oct. 1, 2021. gram in 2020 and built her portfolio as the COVID-19 pandemic settled over Europe. Her work features charcoal portraiture embedded with French-, Dutch- and otherlanguage magazine print; vignettes of the American West such as horses, saguaro landscapes and mid20th century trucks; European cityscapes such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris; and more. She submitted selections of her work to the EuropArtFair, an exhibition in Amsterdam, which took place over the July 4 weekend in 2021. “That was a really great, eyeopening, great first impression of getting your art out there,” said Boldt. “I brought 16 pieces that were framed — were hanging up — and I sold 10 of them. So that
Jess Boldt, artist and SHAPE Family member, stands with some of her work on display at the SHAPE International Library near Mons, Belgium. As Boldt and her family moved from California to SHAPE, she finished her online art program and has taken part in art exhibitions in Amsterdam and Copenhagen.
was a pretty big success.” She partly attributed her success in Amsterdam to her unique national situation — as an American living in and representing Belgium. Not only was the exhibition an early career commercial fruitful for Boldt, it also afforded her the opportunity to meet several other artists, even beginning a correspondence with a Dutch artist whom she greatly admired. Additionally, Boldt joined an online art gallery with some of her fellow students at the Milan Art Institute. They now meet weekly via video teleconference, and several took part in the Art Nordic exhibition in Copenhagen. Her work also gained international attention locally at the library at SHAPE, which, prior to the pandemic, had regularly featured the work of artists on the post. “We’re always looking for local artists, whether they’re Belgians or military dependents on the base,” said Lisa Steinacker, the library director for the SHAPE International Library. “And Jess came to us before COVID; she was our last gallery display before we shut down.” The library again featured Boldt’s work when they were scheduled to reopen in compliance with Belgium’s COVID-19 preventive measures. “She’s got such amazing, bright work,” Steinacker continued. “We
thought it would bring the library back to life. It is kind of fitting considering we were closed and dormant for quite a while.” Boldt’s artwork in the library drew the attention of Shawna Morton, director of the Arts and Crafts Center at SHAPE. The library and Arts and Crafts Center are neighboring facilities and sibling services under U.S. Army Garrison Benelux’s Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation. “I’ve been wanting to put a mural on the wall for the two years I’ve been managing the facility,” said Morton. Steinacker told Morton that Boldt had been trying to make murals in the community. This opportunity excited Morton. Morton and Boldt worked together on a design that would be at home at SHAPE. “We talked about the idea beforehand, we tweaked it as we were going through it,” said Morton. “It was very much a collaborative work in the sense that what we thought would be best for the community as a whole population, keeping in mind our locals, our 30 nations as well as our U.S. parties that are familiar with arts and crafts centers.” The two decided on a dragon to represent the city of Mons. During the Ducasse de Mons, or “Doudou,” a festival taking place after Easter, a mock fight takes place between Saint George and a dragon in the central square of Mons.
Morton said she has received positive comments, especially from Families with children. Besides beautification, the mural also draws attention to the Arts and Crafts Center. “The main goal behind it was to really brand our space,” said Morton. “With there being 30 nations in this community, not everyone has arts and crafts in their military communities. And so I hear oftentimes people will come in for framing or for engraving from other nations outside the U.S., and they do not realize that we have arts and crafts, and they do not know what that is, they do not know what that entails. “Really the idea behind that mural was to just bring awareness to the arts,” she continued. “It is in the community, and we do have opportunities for people to use space, for people to come in and buy products, to try things maybe they didn’t try before, to take a new class to open their eyes to something they may have never done.” Boldt’s work also adorns the work offices of Armed Forces Network – Benelux. This is not Boldt’s first time overseas. Boldt, who hails from Hastings, Nebraska, moved to Germany with her father for five years of her childhood when her father was a U.S. Soldier. She says that living currently at SHAPE in such a multinational environment has shaped her as an artist. Being able to go to the on-post grocery store and hear conversation spoken in a variety of languages has prompted her to extend her thinking and methods as an artist. Recently, her work has brought her into collaborative projects, including with her fellow students from the Milan Art Institute while they were at the art exhibit in Copenhagen. A group of them painted a large bottle that was then sold at auction. She has also curated an exhibition of her fellow students’ work for the SHAPE International Library, which is on display until the end of January. More of Boldt’s work can be found at her website www.jessboldt.com. For more on the library, visit https://chievres.armymwr.com/ programs/shapelibrary. have half a year to adapt to this new regulation. Disposing of old electrical appliances will get easier as well. Those can now be given to a supermarket, discounter or even online retailer. However, stores are only required to take back small devices. Larger devices, on the other hand, such as televisions, can only be taken back by the retailer if a new device is purchased. Additionally, the article states that the German post office (= Deutsche Post) will charge a higher fee for sending standard letters and postcards. The cost for a standard letter increased to €0.85 cent and the cost for a postcard is now €0.70. Smokers will also be affected by an increase in prices. Due to higher tobacco tax, a pack of 20 cigarettes costs an average of 10 cents more. Starting in July, the tobacco tax will also be applied to the substances for
e-cigarettes and hookah tobacco. Despite the increase in fees and prices, online shoppers will have more rights in 2022. Buyers of apps, e-books, software or other digital products can complain about defects for two years now. Previously, such warranty rights could only be claimed with a corresponding contract. Additionally, for all contracts made from January onwards, errors or defects can now be reported to the seller within 12 months instead of the previous six months. Users who sign online contracts can now cancel that contract easier. Websites offering such contracts will soon have a button with which concluded contracts can be revoked. Starting July 1, such a cancellation button will be mandatory. Previously, according to the General Terms and Conditions, term contracts had to be terminated three months before the end of the con-

tract period. Otherwise, the contract was extended by one full year. For contracts signed in March 2022 and later, only a cancellation notice period of one month applies. If this is missed, the term is extended indefinitely. Customers can then terminate the contracts at any time with a notice period of one month. For cell phone contracts and internet contracts, the shorter notice period has already been in effect since December. The only exemption from this new rule are insurance contracts. On the other hand, the prices of gas and heating oil are increasing again this year while electricity prices are slowly going down, according to the German news broadcaster NDR. Additionally, the German automobile club ADAC states that in the course of the year, a new rule will be introduced for drivers, which states that at least two medical masks have to be carried in the medical kit of one’s POV. A specific date, however, has not yet been announced. Additionally, changes to car insurance fees, tax credits for plug-in-hybrids and Autogas vehicles, as well as requirements for new vehicles and TÜV and HU stickers can be read about on their website at https:// www.adac.de/news/neu-in-2022/. Additionally, the news outlet Heise Online reports that the Deutsche Bahn does not sell paper tickets in trains anymore. Instead, customers can buy a digital ticket up to 10 minutes before the beginning of their journey through the website of the Deutsche Bahn or the digital app. KAISERSLAUTERN

Consumers in Germany will face a ban on plastic bags, cancellation buttons for online contracts, animal labels for food and more in the new year. According to an article from the German news broadcaster ARD at www.tagesschau.de/wirtschaft/dasaendert-sich-2022-fuer-verbraucher-101.html, stores are no longer allowed to sell plastic bags with the exception of sturdy reusable bags and the thin plastic bags that can be found at the fruit and vegetable section. Additionally, consumers can expect more transparency when shopping for food in the supermarket. In the future, there will be mandatory labelling of animal products to include information on the keeping of the animals as

Lego Bingo Night at Landstuhl Elementary School Story and photos by Lindsey Hannah Landstuhl Elementary School In October, Landstuhl Elementary School began hosting LEGO Club as an after school activity for grades K-3. LEGO play is a great way for students to develop and reinforce play and social skills while having fun! LEGO Club meets weekly in the
library where students can choose between free-building, using their imaginations, or structured building, following cards or instruction pamphlets. Once students feel they are ready to become master builders, they use the free-building to show off their best creations. This semester we have seen some impressive spaceships, robots, and even shopping centers!
Kyrin Frett proudly holds two of his creations.
Coralie McCall happily shows her creation.
Adam Dulen shows off his creation.

SEMBACH AIRFIELD from Page 1 “And the tower.” He points beyond the field where there is a tall green airport control tower attached to a long threestory building of the same color. We are looking at a stretch of fields north of the village of Mehlingen. Far to our right are a group of buildings — an industrial park — that look suspiciously like old hangars. Beside us is an old bunker. Remnants of the runway 30 years ago, we would be standing at the Sembach Air Base runway. In 1995 the United States Air Force returned the land to the German government, which dismantled and removed almost the entire paved runway. The land is now an open grazing field. We biked here along the Barbarossa and Pfaelzer-Land cycle routes on a cold but sunny January weekend. The old airbase lies on a nicely paved, multi-use trail through the fields north of Mehlingen — a spur of the PfaelzerLand route. The old fencing still lines the southern side of the trail. On the other side of the trail, there is a spaced-out collection of bunkers lining the border. They are in various states of decomposition; some are just a pile of dirt and bricks, while others appear to be fairly intact. It is not recommended to enter old bunkers. History of the flightline The grass airfield was originally built in 1919 by the French military during their occupation of the area in World War I. It was returned to the German government in 1930, used briefly by the Luftwaffe, and returned to the local farmers in 1940. In 1951 the paved runway, hangars, and other flightline structures — including those bunkers — were built. Its purpose was both to support NATO forces and to house an American military base; one of the many expansion projects done in response to the Cold War. It was called Sembach Air Base. In 1953 the first American planes arrived, and it was occupied by U.S. Air Force until 1995. This old airfield is what we are visiting on our bike ride. But, we are still a distant four miles away from being able to grab a coffee at the Exchange on Sembach. Why the distance?
Kaiserslautern American
Why is Sembach now in a different place? The current Army installation called Sembach Kaserne sits north of the original airfield and is separated from the nearest of the old flight line buildings by a little over a half of a mile of farm fields. The reason for the distance lies in those fields. The tiny town of Sembach sits adjacent to the old flight line portion of the airbase. In the 1950s, while surveying to build the rest of the base, the local farmers and citizens protested the loss of more of their farmland. They even blocked the surveying crew’s entrance to the fields. In response, an agreement was made to place the rest of the base on its current hilltop location; an area the farmers avoided because of its poor sandy soil. So, for a long while, Sembach Air Base had two distinct parts – the flightline area, and the central base up on the hill. This separate installation of barracks, offices, and services was retained by the U.S. military and called Sembach Annex when the airfield area was returned to the Germans in 1995. It was transferred from the Air Force to the Army in 2010 and renamed Sembach Kaserne. Getting there You can still see the remnants of the airfield, the tower, the bunkers, fences, and some paving along the multi-use trail north of Mehlingen. Also along the trail is a fascinating Celtic stone circle, from a much more distant time. To get there, you can walk or bike along the paved trails through the fields beside the sports complex in Mehlingen; this is where the freibad, or swimming pool, is. This is also a good place to park a car. Follow Hauptstrasse westward from the sports complex to the primary trail entrance; it is just before the junction with Kaiserstrasse (L401).
