n examination fee of €55 per pet owner will be implemented Feb. 1 for all pets imported from a non-European Union country.

The Kaiserslautern County Administration, in coordination with Rheinland-Pfalz state authorities, will implement this new fee in accordance with European Union Ordinance No. 998/2003, which regulates the import of dogs, cats and other pets into the European Union.

Upon arrival into the country, pets will be examined by the veterinarian near the Ramstein Passenger Terminal’s baggage claim area. These examinations are conducted by the county veterinary office for the German Federal Customs.

Only credit cards will be accepted and a credit card reader is available at the terminal to pay the fee. The fee will be the military member’s responsibility and will not be reimbursed on a travel voucher.

Your New Year’s resolution

W

hen we were kids, we thought we could grow up to be anyone we wanted. We were also told we could achieve anything if we put our minds to it. Unfortunately, most of us weren’t given the proper tools to ensure we could attain those goals. Many of us were further encumbered with parental praise that blinded us to our own shortcomings. I am no less guilty.

For the past several months, my children worked diligently, fine-

tuning their Christmas wish lists. Even my older ones, who no longer believe in the big man, knew those gifts would magically appear beneath the Christmas tree on time and all wrapped up with a bow on top.

Little do any of them understand the difficulties we had and the sacrifices we made to ensure their holiday desires were achieved — product availability, financial sacrifices, assembly and shipping to name a few.

I’m fairly certain many of us still believe in Santa Claus. If we write down our goals and stick the list on the refrigerator, most of

us think we can magically attain our ambitions and desires.

Logically, we all realize that is not the case, but how many of us are truly committed to our goals and willing to make the necessary sacrifices?

Furthermore, how many of us realize the primary obstacle to achieving those goals?

Put another way: Why do most of us abandon our New Year’s resolutions so quickly?

Any achievement requires a particular level of hard work, discipline and commitment. Heartache, setbacks and failures are

seemingly unavoidable and often derail our progress.

Affecting change is just not easy. We have all been there. Blame, resentment and lack of accountability follow misaligned performance.

The most important step to achieving a goal is realizing you are the problem!

We make resolutions and want change because we are inherently doing something wrong.

I want more money. I need to improve my relationship. I would like to be more successful. Take complete responsibility for your circumstances and get ready to change! Your com-

mitment level and resiliency will determine your success. Once we are willing to accept that any goal or lasting change requires a change in our own habit pattern, routine, work ethic, attitude, view point, etc., we have made the first step in achieving our personal or professional goal.

Congratulations! If you are still reading this you’ve accepted that you must change. Unfortunately, several more pitfalls lie ahead.

ust a few weeks ago, champagne glasses were toasting the close of 2012 and the beginning of a brand new year. This fresh start was the perfect time to reflect on the past and resolve to do better in 2013. The custom of New Year’s resolutions can be traced back as far as the ancient Babylonians.

They resolved to return any farming equipment they borrowed during the year. Though the specific resolutions may have changed with the times, the tradition of making resolutions is still in practice today.

Resolutions typically focus on changes we want to make in ourselves and generally revolve around eating less, exercising more, quitting smoking, saving money, get-

It has often been said that to know where you are going, you must first know where you have been.

Nurse anesthetists have traveled a hard and tumultuous road to get where they are today, which is why their contributions are being recognized during National Nurse Anesthetist Week Sunday to Jan. 26.

Nurse anesthesia was established in the late 1800s as the first clinical nursing specialty in response to the growing need surgeons had for anesthetists. Nurse anes-

thetists, pioneers in anesthesia, have been administering anesthesia for 150 years and have played significant roles in developing the practice.

Certified registered nurse anesthetists have been the main provider of anesthesia care to U.S. service men and women on the front lines since World War I. Many of the advancements for medicine have come about during times of war, and this is no less true for the fields of nursing and nurse anesthesia. It became common practice for nurses to administer anesthesia during the mid-19th cen-

The nurse anesthetists serving in World War I were under the auspices of the Red Cross — they did not receive full military pay, rank, allowances or veterans’ compensation.

They served out of patriotism, duty and love of their profession and of mankind.

Ramstein ready for AFNet migration

R

amstein and geographically separated unit network users, workstations and servers will migrate into a single Air Force network Jan. 28.

The goal of this project is to collapse all individual or stand-alone Air Force Active Duty, Reserve and Guard networks into the AFNet. The entire process is tentatively scheduled to last 10 weeks.

During the migration, some Ramstein users may experience network or email access interruptions, but for the majority of users, impact will be minimal.

The AFNet migration project repre-

sents a major change to how computer networks are managed and is a very complex Department of Defense technology initiative.

A single network will significantly improve the Air Force’s information assurance and security posture.

Additionally, this migration will centralize services like email and data storage. Operational and training costs will be reduced through the elimination of redundant systems and services.

The most visible change will be in the format of email address.

The migration formally replaces the old first.last@ramstein.af.mil email

At the onset of the Korean War, a beautiful, eloquent, national call for help from nurse anesthetists was issued.

In Vietnam, nurse anesthetists developed new anesthesia equipment.

Today, nurse anesthetists are actively involved in caring for our troops, civilian casualties, wounded enemy combatants and rescue missions.

Military CRNAs are acutely aware of the responsibility of being the sole anesthesia provider, whether shipboard with the U.S. Navy or in all branches of services as part of forward surgical teams.

They can provide care in a hospital, aboard a ship, in a connex box or in a tent. They

Regardless of the base or organization to which users are assigned, this new address will remain with users for the duration of their career, employment or affiliation with the Air Force.

English garbage guide

Kaiserslautern’s waste management and city cleaning company, ASK, recently published the Garbage Guide of the City of Kaiserslautern in English. The guide provides American citizens with information regarding waste management and gives tips as to how to separate trash the right way and how to dispose of trash. It also lists important points of contact. The garbage guide is available in the Kaiserslautern Rathaus (city hall) and in the German-American Community Office on Lauterstrasse 2.

New tax law will affect paychecks Postal detachment wins AF-level award INDIANAPOLIS — Defense Finance and Accounting Service military and federal civilian payroll customers are affected by recent changes to the tax law, the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act and other entitlement changes.

Social Security withholding taxes will increase to the normal rate of 6.2 percent. For the past two years, during the “tax holiday,” the rate was 4.2 percent. This affects military and civilian personnel.

Some of the other changes affecting military personnel include: 1.7 percent basic pay increase effective in January, basic allowance for subsistence increases 1.1 percent, and basic allowance for housing increases on average 4 percent.

The dollar amount of the Social Security withholding increase varies depending on the individual’s pay grade.

Military Reservists and National Guard members will be the first to see potential changes in their net pay as a result of the law. Entitlement changes will be reflected in their January paychecks.

Department of Defense civilians and other federal employees serviced

by DFAS and have FICA withheld from that pay, will see FICA withholding changes reflected in paychecks based on the pay period ending Dec. 29 for pay dates beginning in January.

etachment 4 of the 2nd Air Postal Squadron won the Air Force Outstanding Aerial Mail Terminal award as the best postal unit in the Air

Force.

The detachment is made up of 14 Airmen, two civilians and 64 contractors. Their achievements range from saving the Air Force and Department of Defense thousands of dollars by reforming the way they do their mission, delivered mail and other packages throughout four combatant commands and redefining their selfinspection program, ensuring the mission is being completed the best way possible.

“This was an outstanding year for us. We delivered things from Combined Federal Campaign contributions to voting ballots,” said Vern Yowell, Det. 4 chief. “We take a lot of pride in what we do because it involves a lot of moving parts.”

ity change so you can focus and spend your time wisely. You may gravitate toward the easiest goal to accomplish and/or get distracted if you set too many.

Another danger is setting unrealistic goals. If goals are out of reach they can become demotivating.

Monitor and amend attainable goals to avoid being discouraged by slow progress or setbacks.

Moreover, when you are able to see progress, you will stay motivated and not walk away from it.

A common acronym for goalsetting is SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, time-bound).

In his recent article from “Ignite!” magazine, performance expert John Hester suggests adding another “M” in the acronym for motivation. The aforementioned pitfalls, setting too many goals and unrealistic expectations, can be demotivating.

Recognizing “what” your goal is, versus “how” you will achieve the goal, is critical. Maintain a close eye on what the goal is and how it will affect the change to sustain motivation.

Before and after photos, metrics and personal rewards for attaining benchmarks are a few ways to stay motivated and focused on the goal.

Work to ensure there is widespread buy-in, empower those involved with attaining the goal, and don’t forget to follow up through feedback sessions.

Setting goals as Airmen is foundational and coincides with the core values of our military profession.

A candid assessment of ourselves, recognizing the interests of our organization, and striving for excellence in all we do supports change through goal setting.

Innovation and continuous process improvement are two other exceptional methods to achieving our goals, but first we need to identify what needs to change and make a lasting commitment to improve.

Medical response team trains for wounded warrior transport

by Stefan Alford LRMC Public Affairs A select group of health care professionals at Landstuhl Regional Medical Command are part of the only military team in the world that flies with a specialized piece of medical equipment to save wounded warriors’ lives on short notice.

It’s a huge responsibility, but the key to responding to emergencies that require a patient to receive Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation is simple: training — and lots of it, said Capt. Elizabeth Hoettels, an intensive care unit and Critical Care Air Transport team nurse.

To that end, the ECMO team has changed the way they prepare with a balanced emphasis on classroom training and hands-on simulation.

“Previously, it’s all been didactic training,” Hoettels said. “This was our first official simulation training.”

That training took place Dec. 21 and will now be provided on a quarterly basis, said Maj. Michelle Langdon, the lead nurse for the CCAT and the Acute Lung Response Team lead.

The ECMO procedure is used when a patient has a condition that prevents the lungs or heart from working properly. It involves a machine that will take over the work of these organs until the patient’s body is able to heal enough to resume those functions.

Langdon developed the objectives for the ECMO simulation, planned the scenarios, operated the SIM Man 3G (simulator mannequin) and evaluated the team’s performance. She has the most experience, having worked with ECMO in the pediatric ICU at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio from 1999 to 2003. LRMC was the first Department of Defense medical facility to use ECMO in adult patients when the program was initiated here in 2009.

“This procedure is for patients who are too sick to travel by standard CCAT teams,” she said. “The pulmonary or cardiac demands of their illness or injury are beyond the capabilities of the equipment, supplies or training for CCAT.” That’s when the ALRT is called to assist with a variety of ventilation therapies, including ECMO, if necessary. This allows the patient to be transported to LRMC for the specialized care required.

“Without the treatment options offered by this team in the past, the patients stayed at the Role III hospitals (i.e., deployed hospitals in Afghanistan) until they either recovered enough to be transported

by CCAT or passed away,” Langdon said.

Last year, the ALRT transported 16 wounded warriors from downrange, placing seven of those patients on ECMO for the flight. The majority of these patients obtained maximal recoveries, she said.

Also overseeing the recent simulation training

were ECMO Director Lt. Col. (Dr.) David Zonies and ALRT NCOIC Staff Sgt. Raquel Sullivan. They helped train two ECMO teams during each of the four-hour simulations. A team is made up of two providers (trauma surgeons and critical intensivists), two registered nurses and two respiratory therapists.

“They essentially trained for hands-on responses to worse-case scenarios, giving them the opportunity to troubleshoot situations,” Hoettels said. “Every member must be able to respond immediately to any emergency or change in patient status that may threaten life. There is no time to wait for help.”

The simulation was a valuable tool in being able to work with the equipment, said Sgt. Matthew Carpenter, one of the team’s lead respiratory therapists.

“My role was to set up the ventilator, make sure the patient’s vitals remained stable and assist the doctor in cannulating (inserting a small tube) the patient for ECMO,” he said. “This simulation training is important because it mimics real-life situations where things can go wrong. With the training, we can be better prepared on a real mission. Even though it’s training, it’s still experience.”

The training paid dividends almost immediately, as just nine days later on Dec. 30 the team responded to a call and successfully placed an injured service member on ECMO for transport from Afghanistan back to LRMC.

A formal commitment we can all relate to is the one we make when we buy a car; unless you have a lot of money, you will need a loan from a financial institution. In this case, the bank commits to lending you the money and you commit to repaying the principle plus interest. Straight forward, right? Informal commitments are a different story.

In my experience, we have the most problems with informal commitments.

Doctors, nurses, medics train with 212th CSH Story and photo by Sgt. 1st Class Randall Jackson 30th MEDCOM Public Affairs More than 100 doctors, nurses and medics from the 212th Combat Support Hospital muddied their boots during CSH Days, a recent training event at Miesau Army Depot.

During the Jan. 10 activity, Soldiers covered 11 miles through muddy terrain during light rain and temperatures in the mid-30s. There were 16 teams of seven Soldiers who competed to see who could accomplish more than a dozen medical and combat-related tasks correctly and in the shortest time possible.

One of the most challenging tasks was rescuing a 200-pound simulated casualty.

“We were low crawling through these tunnels using our headlamps, and we had to load the patient on the Sked (stretcher) and use a pulley system to extract them from the bottom of the pipe and provide any care that we could provide the patient while in the tunnel,” said 1st Lt. Matthew Lewis, a nurse from 212th CSH. Up to 30 or 40 medical officers from the 212th CSH work at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, a program that keeps their medical skills sharp and supports local patient care needs.

But, during three days each month, they train with their unit.

“Working in the hospital we get to sharpen our skills medical wise,” said 1st Lt. Donald McGhee, a 212th CSH nurse. “We can take what we learn at

the hospital with diseases and injuries and care for those injuries and take them to the Soldiers who don’t always get to work in the hospital and just do training for them as well.”

“Overall, it makes us better officers and Soldiers because we get a broader training — the whole spectrum, field and hospital,” McGhee said.

ore than 300 German and American guests gathered at the Rheinlander Community Club on Smith Barracks in Baumholder to ring in the new year during the U.S. Army Garrison Baumholder New Year’s reception Jan. 5.

Lt. Col. Mike Sullivan, USAG Baumholder commander, greeted the guests and thanked them for all the support the community provided the Soldiers and the garrison in 2012.

He also gave guests a brief glance of what 2013 has in store for the garrison, pointing out that by the time it holds its 2014 New Year’s reception, it is expected that some 2,000 to 2,300

Soldiers will call Baumholder their home. This means that over the course of the year, the military community will grow as the new units reach full strength.

Two of the key units settling in are the 16th Sustainment Brigade and the 421st Medical Battalion. Some of the additional 10 components have already arrived while others are scheduled to settle in by fall.

Butch Wilcher, a music teacher from Kaiserslautern Middle School, again volunteered his musical talents and provided excellent background music for the event.

The VielHarmonie Choir from St. Wendel-Bliesen in Saarland, who entertained the audience with three musical numbers, greatly enhanced the holiday spirit of the event.

Area Defense Council Justice for all

The ADC works with paralegals in assisting with investigation and preparing for cases, trials and presentations to commanders.

The main role of the defense counselors is to help Airmen to understand their rights as an Air Force member and their constitutional rights to ensure that those rights are represented at courts-martial and in administrative actions against members.

“We see more of the big picture and help Airmen make the best chain of choices,” said Capt. Andrew Halldin, ADC attorney. “Anytime someone is suspected of doing something, it’s always a complex situation so we help them to figure out how to best help themselves.”

The ADC is completely independent; their chain of command goes directly to Washington, D.C. They have no obligation to assist the command here at Ramstein, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa, or 3rd Air Force.

This helps the ADC support the accused member exclusively.

Airmen also have confidentiality with the ADC, meaning anything that an accused member says to the defense team cannot and will not be revealed to anyone.

The ADC is different from the legal office because the base legal office assists your chain of command’s interests in good order and discipline. Unlike the ADC, the base legal office will not assist you if you are suspected of committing a crime.

At Ramstein, there are four ADC representatives who serve all Air Force members of the KMC and geographically separated units. Airmen who are suspected of committing a crime have the option of requesting a defense counsel by name. Attorneys here are primarily tasked to provide defense in court for Ramstein and its GSUs, and they also travel all across Europe to provide representation in courts-martial.

“This is our exclusive job, to make sure people understand their rights and that we are looking out for their wellbeing, and to protect their legal rights,” said Capt. Karl Vogel, ADC attorney.

“We defend the men and women (who) defend America.”

21st TSC uses automation to track weapons

by Staff Sgt. Warren W. Wright Jr. 21st TSC Public Affairs The 21st Theater Sustainment Command is using advanced technology to enhance effectiveness in the arms room, ensuring proper tracking and inventory of its weapons systems and sensitive items.

Smartrack Digital Arms Room is a fully automated, electronic information software used to conduct inventory and accountability and to maintain up-to-date maintenance records on their weapons systems.

“It makes things a lot easier and faster,” said Staff Sgt. Jose Espinoza, an armament repairer with Headquarters, Headquarters Company, Special Troops Battalion, 21st TSC. “We use it for issuing (weapons), maintenance, as well as keeping track of who uses the weapon each time.”

Smartrack helps armorers keep track of their weapons as well as speeding up the process of issuing those weapon systems to Soldiers.

“All you need is your ID card and your pin number and I can pull up all the information about you and make sure it’s physically you,” Espinoza said. “It’s less time consuming, it’s more effective and more efficient to keep track of a weapon.”

Espinoza added that in the past, when armorers used paper records to keep track of weapons, armorers would have to open their arms room up to an hour prior to issuing weapons in order to ensure enough time was available. Now, with the Smartrack system, armorers can cut that time in half.

“It just takes a couple of seconds to find a person (in the system),” Espinoza said. “Instead of looking through a folder, I can just type in your name and I can pinpoint everyone to their specific weapon.”

Though the chance of a computer crash is always a possibility, Espinoza is prepared for the worst.

“We have a backup to the backup,” he said. “The system has an external hard drive, and we also have backup paperwork.”

The process of assigning newly arriving Soldiers a weapon has also been sped up.

“To in-process a person it only takes a minute at the most, whereas back in the day, it would take 10 to 20 minutes to find the weapon, to find a slot, and to input you into the system,” Espinoza said. “Now, I pull you up in the system, assign you a weapon and that’s it.”

Though the system is not in wide use across the Army, other units are capitalizing on the time saving benefits of Smartrack.

“The person who taught the course said that units at Fort Campbell and Fort Brag have it,” Espinoza said.

“They use it and they love it.”

Espinoza and other armorers operating Smartrack are using the system for more than just issuing weapons to Soldiers. It’s also being used to maintain inventory on weapons and other sensitive items.

“I can keep track of whatever you need,” Espinoza said. “Whatever you have in your property book, you can import it into this and it will keep track of it.”

2013 financial aid season started Scholarships available to KMC students, spouses

How would you like to win a scholarship to help pay for college?

Last year, $102,000 was awarded to students and spouses from the KMC. If you are a high school senior who will graduate this year or a military spouse attending college you may be eligible to win a scholarship.

Scholarships are available to graduating high school seniors and spouses of active duty, retired military and Department of Defense civilians residing in the KMC. Scholarships are awarded solely on merit and academic achievement, with no regard to race, color, creed, religion or disability. Financial need is not taken into consideration.

Details of eligibility, requirements and deadlines are noted in the scholarship applications. The KMC Scholarship Committee is comprised of members representing the Ramstein Officers’ Spouses Club, Ramstein Enlisted Spouses’ Association, and the Kaiserslautern Landstuhl Spouses’ Association.

Scholarship funds are donated by all three organizations raised from the Ramstein Welfare Bazaar, Thrift Shop sales and various fundraisers.

Last year, more than $102,000 was awarded in scholarships.

Applications are available online at www.RamsteinOSC.org. All graduating seniors from Ramstein and Kaiserslautern high schools with at least a 3.0 GPA are eligible to apply for the scholarship.

Scholarship applications will be accepted in person at both high schools Feb. 6 to 8 (see website for details).

Applications must be submitted in person, no exceptions. Scholarship applications for spouses will be accepted at the Ramstein Officers’ Club from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 6 to 8.

Applicants must hand deliver the completed application at the specified time. No late applications will be accepted.

With the start of the new year comes the workload and stress of applying for financial aid for the coming years of college. To make the process easier, the basics of filing the free application for federal student aid will be explained here.

Every year, students have between Jan. 1 and June 30 to apply. Aid provided by the government, state or college includes grants, loans and work-study programs.

Grants, like scholarships, are a type of financial aid that does not need to be paid back. However, grants are based on financial need rather than merit.

A loan is money borrowed from a bank, financial institution or the federal government that must be paid back with interest. Federal loans tend to have lower interest rates, making them a very attractive option.

The work-study program allows students to pay for their education through a part time job. Jobs can be provided on-campus with the school or off-campus with a public or nonprofit organization.

In order to receive aid, applicants must fit the FAFSA eligibility requirements: • They must have financial need (calculated as difference between expected family contribution and cost of attendance).

• They must be an American citizen or eligible non-citizen (i.e. Green Card holder).

• They must have a valid Social Security number.

Lunch and Learn

• They must be registered with Selective Service if male.

• They must be enrolled in or accepted to college.

• They must keep up satisfactory academic records throughout college.

• They may not default on any federal loans.

• They may only use the aid for education.

• They must have a high school diploma or GED. There are three options for filing a FAFSA. Applicants may file online, send a printed PDF version or request a paper application through the mail.

The fastest and easiest option is via the Internet.

When filing online, it is recommended the applicant request their federal student aid PIN before starting the process. The PIN is used to electronically sign the FAFSA form.

To request a PIN, visit www.pin. ed.gov and be prepared to give a name, date of birth, Social Security number and address. Applicants may create their own PIN or have the site generate one. If the site makes one, it can be viewed online, be sent via email or received through the mail, depending on the applicant’s preference.

While completing the FAFSA, be prepared to provide financial information, such as taxes and savings and checking account balances. Having the following on hand may also be useful: • Social Security numbers of applicant and parents.

• Driver’s license.

• Alien registration number (noncitizens).

School Notes

Parents of third, fourth and fifth grade students at Vogelweh Elementary School are invited to the next “Lunch and Learn” from 11 a.m. to noon Jan. 31 in the school library. Parents will learn about the Terra Nova standardized test their children will take in March. School counselors will explain all aspects of the assessment.

Parents may bring a bag lunch. Light refreshments and door prizes will be provided.

• Records of untaxed income (i.e. child support, interest income).

Applicants may choose to list 10 schools on their online FAFSA. The first choice college should be listed first and so on. Results will be sent to these schools once the file has been processed.

Before having it processed, the FAFSA must be signed electronically with the PIN. Once it has been submitted, a confirmation email will be sent.

Three days to three weeks later, the student aid report, a summary of the student’s FAFSA information, will be sent out. Depending on the school, applicants will start to receive financial aid “awards,” which they may choose to accept or decline.

For those only wanting an estimate of financial aid, there is an application called “FAFSA4caster” at www. fafsa.ed.gov.

Students who are preparing for college or are already attending have the option of applying for private scholarships as well. There are scholarships specifically for athletics, religious organizations, ethnic groups, nationalities and more. Some may require an essay or interview, while others simply ask for a completed application.

new contemporary worship service, Chapel Next, which targets the younger generation, is now integrated into the KMC religious services.

Chapel Next was initiated by Chaplain (Col.) Marc S. Gauthier, the command chaplain for the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, in an effort to reach out to young Soldiers and their families.

The Chapel Next program is held at the Daenner Chapel on Daenner Kaserne. There are less than 10 Army organizations stateside that offer the program.

Chapel Next’s focus is based on the three Cs: connect with God, connect with one another and connect others with God. The mission is to lead service members, families and civilians into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ.

Chaplains who are a part of the program offer the congregation activities such as a worship band that plays contemporary gospel music, a variety of youth ministries, small group gatherings at the homes of several members, potluck dinners after services, podcasts, and breakfast fellowships.

“The goal, as we look at young Soldiers and young families, is to have the type of ministry opportunities that really help them,” Gauthier said.

“And so we hope that as they come, that it feels comfortable, that if feels natural and that it feels real. We hope that it’s just a community that they’d like to become a part of.”

Gauthier said that during his time at the chaplain officer basic course, he and a few other instructors started a Chapel Next service at the chaplain school, which allowed the young chaplains to see a more

contemporary style of worship. That in turn led to the younger chaplains taking that style of worship on to their units as they graduated.

The Chapel Next program at Daenner Chapel has existed for more than six months and is continually growing with more than 90 members to date.

“What I’d like to see for this congregation in the Kaiserslautern community is just a ministry that blesses people, that equips them, that gives them hope and draws them together,” Gauthier said. “I let God deal with the numbers, and so I hope that as we faithfully try to communicate God’s word and we have a service that connects with people, that they will gradually grow.”

Dominique C. Vance, a military spouse and member of Daenner Chapel, said she loves the program.

“We have been to a couple different church services, but the thing that draws us here are the people,” Vance said. “The people are very warm and very genuine, so we just fell in love with everything about the program and the people.”

The Chapel Next program offers services starting at 10 a.m. on Sundays, 6 p.m. Wednesdays and 6 p.m. Fridays.

Are you in a relationship with a person or substance?

ebruary brings to mind relationships and love. But how do we know what qualifies as love or a relationship? To find out, ask yourself these questions: • Am I identified as being linked with someone?

• Do I identify myself as linked with someone?

• Am I pre-occupied at times with thoughts of someone?

• Is my free time spent with that someone?

• When I spend time with others do I attempt to ensure that I still have quality time with my special someone?

• If you took my special someone away would I feel the impact of that loss?

• Do I make sacrifices for that someone?

• Can I predict the level of support I will get from that someone?

• Do I emotionally rely on that someone?

• Does that someone bring out the wild side of you and make you crazy?

If the answer to these questions is “yes,” and we are talking about an actual person, then congratulations, you are in a relationship. Now, take a minute and go back to the first question.

Are you able to replace the word “someone” with “alcohol” or “drugs?” If so, then it’s possible you have entered into a relationship with a substance.

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism reports that “one of the clearest demonstrations of how alcohol use negatively impacts the family is the widely documented association between alcohol use and interpersonal violence.”

Family problems that are likely to co-occur with alcohol problems include: • Violence • Marital conflict • Infidelity • Jealousy • Economic insecurity • Divorce • Fetal alcohol effect Drinking problems may negatively alter marital and family functioning, but there is also evidence that they can increase as a consequence of marital and family problems.

Thus, drinking and family functioning are strongly and reciprocally linked. Not surprisingly, alcohol problems are common in couples that present for marital therapy, and marital problems are common in drinkers who present for alcohol treatment.

Club 7 offers visitors anything from a home-cooked meal Friday evenings, to routine trips, or a place to go during holidays, in addition to the routine access to a movie/video game library and Internet.

“Club 7 is a chapel-sponsored drop-in center for young Airmen and civilians to be in a safe, comfortable and fun environment, all while having fun,” said Chaplain (Capt.) Gary Davidson, 86th Airlift Wing rabbi and Club 7 chaplain.

Club 7 started out as a few Airmen in the dorms gathering in their day room and has now become a place where more than 50 people come a night.

“I’ve been coming here since Club 7 started about four years ago, so pretty much my entire enlistment,” said Senior Airman Brandon Muncy, 721st Aerial Port Squadron passenger service agent.

“It’s good to see how much this place has expanded and become more popular over the years. It took a lot of support for us to gain the space we have now.”

Airman 1st Class Leah Burke, 24th Intelligence Squadron geospatial analyst, and Senior Airman Caleb Smalley, 86th Communications Squadron postal specialist, exchange a video game controller for a common access card in Club 7 Dec. 10 on Ramstein. Club 7 is a place for Airmen to meet other Airmen, go on trips together and have a place to meet on holidays.

Those Airmen who visit have access to multiple items and activities sponsored by the chapel and Club 7.

“We offer more than 500 movies and video games for use during visits, Internet access with our computers, or you can use your own computer via wifi, religious study, instruments, a snack bar and more for people who come through on a nightly basis,” Davidson said.

“We also take two trips a year to Switzerland and Austria, local trips to the Christmas market, canoeing and offer leadership and volunteer experience.”

Muncy said these things add up to his favorite part about Club 7 — being with new people.

“My favorite part about Club 7 isn’t exactly that they offer so many things, but it’s the fact that these movies and trips bring people together who might not normally hang out together,” he said.

ix Airmen from the 86th Security Forces Squadron participated in a live-fire training event with the Deutsche Bundespolizei, German Federal Police, Jan. 11 in Bexbach.

“It gives us a chance to familiarize ourselves with their weapons system and tactics, especially as it pertains to high-risk responses,” said Tech. Sgt. Eric Fritz, 86th SFS assistant NCOIC of security forces training.

Those selected to go to the training were chosen by their flight chiefs because of their recent work performance.

The Airmen shot the H&K MP-5 submachine gun and P-30 pistol. They were tested from a range of three meters to 50 meters.

“We shot standing up, from behind a barricade and in the kneeling position,” said Senior Airman Emilio Montez, a member of the 86th SFS. “It was a great opportunity to see how we are able to fire their weapons so we can be prepared for possibly working with them in the future.”

Each weapon’s magazine held a dummy round to simulate a malfun ity to perform immediate actions.

During training, both sides were giving tips and tricks to help each to add to the competition.

Training with the German police isn’t just about getting to know sy improve joint force.

Celebrating the ‘Crazy Season’

by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs “Fasching” or “Fastnacht” are words that can be read on flyers and posters on doors of stores, or in advertisements in newspapers at this time of the year. Fasching means carnival (comparable to Mardi Gras) and Fasching events include “Maskenball” (masquerade ball), “Faschingstanz” (Fasching dance) or “Prunksitzung” (pomp session).

The Fasching season is called the “crazy season” or “fifth season.” It officially begins at 11:11 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month and ends Ash Wednesday, which this year is Feb. 13.

The crazy season features costume parties, dances, funny speeches and parades. It’s a time for being crazy and wild, cheering up, having fun and, most importantly, it’s the time to disguise. Visitors of Fasching events are encouraged to dress up in costumes. If they are not in disguise, they have to pay higher admission fees at Fascing events. Often, the best costumes are awarded prizes. During Fasching, women do not need a male escort when going to a dance or a ball. It’s even up to them to ask the men for a dance — and the men better not say “no.”

A typical Fasching event is the “Prunksitzung,” or pomp session. Traditionally, carnival associations sponsor and organize this event. Amateur comedians hold, in their local dialect, humorous speeches spiced with sarcasm about local happenings, people or politics. In between speeches, carnival club

members sing and present dances. A committee consisting of a president and 11 counselors watch the session from their seats at the back of the stage.

After each performance, committee members present medals to the performers.

Carnival clubs are represented by a Fastnacht princess or prince. Every year, a new princess or prince is elected and usually gets crowned the night of New Year’s Eve. Traditionally, the mayor hands them the keys to the city and thus the executive power.

Fastnacht has its origin in ancient times, when people realized that with the start of a new year, spring would soon be on its way. To make it possible for spring to arrive, the demons of winter had to be chased away. Therefore, people put on evillooking costumes and masks. They danced in the streets looking like devils, demons and witches and used noise-making devices, bells and drums to scare away the winter ghosts.

Through the centuries, the season developed into a Christian ritual. The literal translation of the word “Fastnacht” means “night of fasting.” Today, it’s the time of merriment and laughter preceding Lent, the 40-day period before Easter.

In some German areas, such as the Cologne, Fasching is called “Karneval.” The term refers to the fasting period. The Latin expression “carne vale” means “farewell, meat” and describes the time of celebrations before Lent, when people have to renounce meat, opulent meals and festivities. Rose Monday is known for colorful parades with floats, musicians, dancers and walking groups in creative costumes. Fat Tuesday continues with parades or street Fasching events. This is also the day when Ramstein-Miesenbach has its city parade and when Kaiserslautern celebrates its street Fasching in front of the city hall.

The Ramstein-Miesenbach carnival association, Bruchkatze, which sponsors the parade, is still looking for American participants. Walking groups, bands and individuals dressed in funny costumes can take part. Biggest Loser — KMC style

For the third year, the Ramstein Southside Fitness Center is hosting a Biggest Loser competition from now until the end of March.

“This is one of our biggest events during the year,” said Nicol Gecewich, 786th Force Support Squadron event coordinator. “It’s important to have this at the beginning of the year to promote health and fitness, while people are really looking to transition into a healthy lifestyle.”

Biggest Loser consists of male, female and team competitors. Each week they are put to the test with competitions and weigh-ins.

“There are 11 challenges total,” said the event coordinator. “At the end of the competition there is going to be an Amazing Race challenge, and that should be a lot of fun. I am really looking forward to seeing how it turns out.”

Along with the Amazing Race there are many more challenges that will

happen every Friday of the competition.

“I will be taking part in as many of the challenges as possible,” said Staff Sgt. StacyLee Mente, 86th FSS manpower analyst and Biggest Loser competitor. “After having two children I have struggled with weight loss, and this is my chance to be accountable to something bigger than myself.”

In January, the challenges consist of planking, jump rope and a balance challenge. In the coming months, there will be a wall-sit, hang tough, push-up and row challenge.

“There will be male and female winners as well as team winners for the challenges,” Gecewich said. “The winners will win a fun prize. We have some really great prizes this year like a tablet, some workout equipment and many other things.”

With more than 300 people from the KMC participating, the event coordinator made a Facebook page for those taking part to communicate with each other.

“It brings the community together. I have been seeing people on the page getting together and finding workout buddies.”

Having a plan and sticking with it is an important part of losing weight, Gecewich said.

“I am going to be holding a ‘Last

Chance Workout’ on Thursdays before the Friday weigh-in,” the event coordinator said. “It is going to be a onehour aerobic class to, hopefully, give people that last little push they need before the weigh-in.”

Did you know statistics show that 46 percent of New Year’s resolutions fail within the first month alone?

If your New Year’s resolution is losing weight and staying healthy, here are a few tips from Ramstein’s professionals to keep you going in the right direction all year long.

Get a workout partner

If you have a hard time getting motivated to exercise, enlisting a fitness partner may help. A physical training wingman can encourage you, challenge you, help pace you and can even make working out more fun.

“Go into it together with someone you don’t want to let down,” said Tech. Sgt. Dwayne Haynes, 786th Force Support Squadron fitness program manager. “That way you’re less likely to drop out and more likely to keep up with it as well as keep motivated. You’re more likely to succeed if you keep at it and go in with a partner.”

Stay motivated

Motivation is an important factor in sticking to your workout routine, but it can be the hardest to keep up.

“Most people hit a plateau after two to three weeks when they’re not losing as much weight as they feel they need to be,” said Staff Sgt. Jeremy Brown, 786th Force Support Squadron fitness supervisor, “They start out strong and lose 5 to 10 lbs., but then they hit that plateau and stop. They ask themselves if it’s really worth it, and once they get unmotivated, they’ll eventually return to how they were living before.

It’s said that time flies when you’re having fun. Well, so does a good workout.
