Preventing Failure: 86 MXS performs aircraft checks Story and photos by Senior Airman Andrew Bertain 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs U.S. Air Force maintainers from the 86th Maintenance Squadron performed scheduled inspections of the 37th Airlift Squadron’s fleet of C-130J Super Hercules aircraft at Ramstein Air Base, Jan. 9. The inspections, or letter checks, take an aircraft off the flightline every 270 days so a more thorough inspection can happen. These inspections include preventative maintenance and test the overall operability and health of the aircraft, rather than waiting for something to break. “Multiple different sections in the 86th MXS, as well as the aircraft’s dedicated crew chief, separate the aircraft into 10 zones, and it gives everyone some downtime to address any delayed discrepancies and fix what can’t be fixed while out on the flightline everyday,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Caleb Mainord, 86th MXS propulsions non-commissioned officer in charge. See AIRCRAFT CHECKS, Page 3

COMMENTARY: Air Force mourns 5th CMSAF passing Story and photo by Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs Robert D. Gaylor, the fifth Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force, passed away Jan. 17, at the age of 93. Gaylor’s career spanned nearly 31 years, leaving a legacy of service, leadership and dedication. “CMSAF Gaylor was a pillar of our Air Force,” said Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force JoAnne S. Bass. “For more than 75 years, both in uniform and after he retired, he served our Airmen and the institution he loved so dearly. He will be deeply missed by all.” Gaylor was selected as the Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force on Aug. 1, 1977. In this role, he served as the senior enlisted advisor to the Chief of Staff

of the Air Force and the most senior noncommissioned officer in the Air Force. He represented the interests of enlisted Airmen at the highest levels of the service and played a key role in shaping Air Force policies. Among his numerous achievements as CMSAF, he played a significant role in the creation of the Air Force’s new maternity uniform and pushed for a policy change allowing junior enlisted Airmen undergoing a permanent change of station to transport their families at the government’s expense. Gaylor enlisted in the Air Force in 1948, at a time when the service was still in its infancy. He began his career in the security police, continued to serve in a variety of assignments, including in Korea, Japan and Vietnam. He also served

as an instructor at the Second Air Force Noncommissioned Officer Academy at Barksdale Air Force Base, Lousiana, assisted in reopening the then-Strategic Air Command NCO Academy, and established the U.S. Air Forces in Europe Command Management and Leadership Center. Following his retirement in 1979, Gaylor never wavered in his commitment to the Air Force community, remaining actively involved with Airmen and their families through organizations, like the Air Force Memorial Foundation and the Air Force Sergeants Association. He continued to meet with Airmen for the remainder of his life, advocating tirelessly for the well-being and professional development of those who served.

AIRCRAFT CHECKS from Page 1 When an aircraft comes due for a letter check, it gets brought into a maintenance hangar and the entire plane is lifted on jacks to give maintainers the ability to access every part of the aircraft. During this letter check, the 86th MXS engine shop will have the chance to inspect all four engines of the C-130J and find anything that has been worn out, needs repair or to be replaced. “We go through, section by section, each engine and write up anything that could be leaking or broken,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Dawayne Harris, 86th MXS aerospace propulsion journeyman. “Once we are finished with the checklist, we go back in and start actually fixing things. It’s really all about preventing problems and supporting the mission.” As the Global Gateway, one of Ramstein’s biggest mission assets are the C-130Js. The 86th MXS maintainers emphasized the importance these inspections have in keeping the fleet healthy and rotating letter check inspections on rotation to ensure mission readiness year round.

KMC Housing community saves energy

Energy conservation and climate change has become a constant discussion over the past few years. So, why should you be passionate about conserving energy in your home? Well, this boils down to two fundamental reasons: To save money and to reduce the amount of damage caused to the environment. Whether you live on-base or in our local communities, here are some easy ways to save energy costs while living in your home.

ATTN: Those packing up, leaving the KMC Many members wait too long to begin the household goods moving process, thereby causing additional stress and delays. The 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron Personal Property Office advises movers to call them at +49-631-536-7727 three weeks before moving to begin the booking process.

Energy conservation tips » Use sunlight whenever available, switch off lights when not required and adjust heating thermostat to lower temperature when you’re not home. » Draw your curtains at dusk to retain heat in your home, and make sure the curtains, or any furniture, are not blocking your radiators. » Dress for the weather. When you are at home, dress in warm clothing in the winter and cooler clothing in the summer to stay comfortable. » Turn off the lights when they are not in use. » Set your refrigerator temperature to the manufacturer’s recommendation to avoid excessive cooling and wasting energy. » Turn water off when shaving, washing hands, brushing teeth. » Unplug unused electronics » Conserve energy by not leaving electrical items on standby…prevent further waste by not keeping laptops and mobile phones charging unnecessarily.

» Take a shower rather than a bath – showers use a lot less water. » Defrost frozen food in the fridge overnight, as this will reduce the cooking time. » Keep inside doors closed if they lead to an unheated room, to prevent cold air mixing with warmed air and flowing around the house. » Dripping taps, if you live on-base, call the Housing Maintenance (Comm: 06371-4639510) for a fix! If you are off-base, talk with your Landlord. » Winter tip for base townhouse families: When temperatures are below freezing; ensure the outside technical room is always closed. As a reminder, the maintenance responsibility for technical rooms belongs to the Housing Maintenance Contractor, Vectrus. For repairs, call Comm Phone: 06371-463-9510. » During the winter months, cover your outside water facets to prevent bursting water pipes!

Medal of Honor: Marine Corps Sgt. Richard Binder by Katie Lange Department of Defense News Like many men born in the mid1800s, Marine Corps Sgt. Richard Binder immigrated to America to find better opportunities. By the time the Civil War came around, the U.S. was his adopted home, and he was ready to fight for it. Binder earned his stripes on ships throughout the war, and his actions earned him a Medal of Honor. Binder was born on July 26, 1839, in Würtemberg. According to a 2014 article in the Hidden City Daily, a Philadelphia historical online publication, Binder moved to New York in 1854 when he was 15 before settling in Philadelphia. The publication said he worked with another German immigrant as a barber. In 1860, he applied for and was granted U.S. citizenship. Just ahead of his 22nd birthday, Binder enlisted in the Marine Corps on July 11, 1861, about three

months after the Civil War broke out. Binder first served on a ship that sank during the Battle of Port Royal, South Carolina, in early November 1861. He moved on to other ships and was involved in various naval battles before being sent to serve on the USS Ticonderoga, a propeller-driven warship, in 1864. By Christmas Day in December 1864, Union forces were carrying out their first assault on Fort Fisher near Wilmington, North Carolina. The fort was the last major coastal stronghold for the Confederates, as it still managed to get supplies through the Union blockade. Union troops weren’t successful in this skirmish, so three weeks later, they tried again. Binder was aboard the USS Ticonderoga during the second Battle of Fort Fisher, and this time, Union troops were better prepared. According to the Naval History and Heritage Command, about 40 ships on the front lines took aim at the

fort using more than 600 guns. “The 50 cannons aboard the frigate Colorado alone were more than the number of guns guarding the walls of Fort Fisher,” naval historians wrote. On Jan. 13, the Navy began its bombardment. The Confederates responded with their own heavy return fire. At some point, a 100pound Parrott rifle exploded on one of the Union ships, killing eight sailors and wounding at least a dozen more. Throughout those first two days of battle, Binder, who was the captain of a gun, “performed his duties with skill and courage,” according to his Medal of Honor citation. His actions remained steady as he continually took aim at Confederate batteries onshore, helping to lessen enemy fire as the assault went on. By Jan. 15, naval forces landed on the shores of Fort Fisher. While many of them were repulsed, causing many Union casualties, their

actions successfully distracted the fort’s garrison from the Union Army’s attack on the land side of the installation. Those soldiers eventually breached the walls of the fort and took over, staking a claim over one of the strongest fortifications possessed by the Confederates and severing the South’s transatlantic supply routes. According to the Naval History and Heritage Command, the fall of Fort Fisher led to the occupation of Wilmington, which directly contributed to the Confederate surrender in April 1865. After the war, Binder was honorably discharged. He received the Medal of Honor for his actions on June 22, 1865, although a ceremony for the award wasn’t held until the 1890s, according to Hidden City Daily. Nine other men from the Ticonderoga also earned Medals of Honor for their actions at Fort Fisher.

In 1868, Binder married a woman named Frederika, who had also emigrated from the same town in Germany years prior. They had a daughter, Laura, and a son, Richard Jr. Binder eventually returned to cutting hair. By 1890, he’d become an astute businessman with four shops set up across Philadelphia. He was well-known in the industry and even expanded his business into tonics and toupees, Hidden City Daily reported. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Binder loved to collect canes and had about 600 of them, including one once used by President Abraham Lincoln. Binder died Feb. 26, 1912, from heart disease, according to his Inquirer obituary. He is buried in West Laurel Hill Cemetery in BalaCynwyd, Pennsylvania, just outside of Philadelphia.

Matthews gave a detailed speech about the importance of MLK’s legacy and the impact he made. “Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was among us earthly beings for only 39 years. However, he accomplished so much and stood for so many impactful ideas,” said Matthews. “He was a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, a prolific author, and, of course, a leader.” Matthews spoke about his ideals and how people must consistently keep his values of change in mind if they want to make the change he envisioned for America.

In September 2023, during a Torch Club meeting, the members talked about teachers that made a difference in their lives, and decided to do something to make those teachers feel appreciated. The group discussed distributing gift baskets to teachers for World Teachers’ Day and started planning the contents based on locality, price, and availability. They then compiled a list of possible items for inclusion in the baskets and agreed to meet a few weeks later to follow up on project execution. On Oct. 4, the group came together to decorate and assemble the baskets. “They worked well as a team to make sure all the baskets had an equal number of items,” said Lane. “Knowing that they were doing a good deed for their teachers made them clearly very happy.” The following day, the Torch Club members delivered the baskets to the teachers at the local Child Development Centers and at the School Age Center. Lane said that this project helped strengthen the bond between local teachers and the Baumholder Military Community youth. It showed how impactful educators can be on younger

The Baumholder Youth Center is a Child and Youth Services program run by the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation. The program is free for middle/high-school students in grades 6 through 12 and offers several programs such as Torch Club, Keystone, and Journeys, thanks to the ongoing partnership with the Boys and Girls Clubs of America and 4-H. Currently, the youth center provides services to 180 registered youth members as well as many families within the BMC.

“Our role at the youth center is to provide a safe and positive environment to encourage our youth and support them as they build skills,” said Lane. “A very important part of the Torch Club is to help its members identifying contributing acts of service to perform for other community members.” The bi-monthly meetings allow for discussion and planning of community projects to help the youth accomplish their service goals. “Through the latest Torch Club project, our youth witnessed how rewarding it can be to invest time and energy in a selfless way, and how much joy they can bring to others,” Lane said. “Hopefully, they will continue to find ways to impact the community for the best, either on their own or with a group.”

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Allvin presented Maj. Stephen Keck, 422nd Test and Evaluation Squadron F-15E Strike Eagle pilot, the 2022 Mackay Trophy on Jan. 11, at Nellis Air Force Base, NV. “Major Keck’s inspiring

actions reflect exactly what it takes to be a stellar Airman and aviator — ingenuity, tenacity, and audacity,” Allvin said. “Moreover, any time your name is on a trophy alongside the likes of Hap Arnold, Eddie Rickenbacker, and Chuck Yeager, you have done something truly special.” Keck received this honor for his actions while serving as the

position. In response, Keck and Rabun corrected the error by being proactive and shifting to a more aggressive posture of their forces. During the mission, Keck also identified an adversary aircraft in the contested airspace and initiated an intercept to ensure the safety of ground forces. Ultimately, the success of the operation resulted in the capture of a senior terrorist leader. “The team I worked with during the mission was outstanding,” Keck said. “When we flew that night, we had a very well developed and understood game plan that enabled our ability to operate at our best. Flying alongside other folks at the top of their game ready to use their

capabilities to fight our enemies and protect our allies was an awesome feeling.” Awarded for the “most meritorious flight of the year” by an Air Force individual, group, or organization, the Mackay Trophy is one of the longest-standing aviation awards in the nation having first been given to 2nd Lt. Henry H. ‘Hap’ Arnold in 1912. Presented by the Air Force chief of staff annually, the Mackay Trophy is remarkable in that the achievements inscribed on the base of the trophy symbolize the growth of American military aviation from its beginnings to now. The trophy is housed on permanent display at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum.

Collaboration is key to implementing DOD Industrial Base Strategy

by Joseph Clark Department of Defense News The Defense Department will continue to work closely across agencies and with industry partners as it implements its strategy for strengthening the defense industrial base to meet the future needs of the warfighter, the Pentagon’s top industrial base policy official said. Laura D. Taylor-Kale, assistant secretary of defense for industrial base policy, said DOD’s National Defense Industrial Strategy represents a bold vision that will require close and sustained collaboration across the full defense industrial ecosystem. “While we say that it will guide use for the next three to five years, we’re also very much talking about having a generational change,” Taylor-Kale said of the newly released strategy during a discussion hosted by the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C., July 11. “We understand that there’s a lot that is part of the current state of the industrial base,” she said. “You can’t make those changes over one or two years. It’s going to take concerted effort over time, not just within the Department of Defense.” Taylor-Kale offered her vision just hours after releasing the NDIS, the first comprehensive strategy document produced by DOD to plot the course for creating a modern, resilient defense

industrial ecosystem to deter U.S. adversaries and meet the production demands posed by evolving threats. In unveiling the strategy, she underscored the urgent need to shore up the defense industrial base as U.S. adversaries build up their military power to levels not seen since World War II. She noted China’s increasing threat to upend the existing international order. She also highlighted the United States’ continued support for Ukraine as it defends itself from Russian aggression and for Israel in its fight against Hamas. Despite the task at hand, Taylor-Kale said there is broad enthusiasm across government and industry partners and among key global allies. The defense industrial base must continue to meet present demands, while remaining capable of adapting to future conflicts. The strategy focuses on four key areas critical to building a modernized defense industrial ecosystem over the next three to five years. Those areas include resilient supply chains, workforce readiness, flexible acquisition and economic deterrence. The NDIS is the product of months of engagement from stakeholders from across industry and government, which began at the direction of Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks in March 2023. The document also reflects President Joe Biden’s broad-

er efforts to shore up domestic manufacturing and critical supply chains in the U.S. Officials said the final strategy incorporates more than a thousand comments received from stakeholders. Taylor-Kale said the strategy was far more than an “aspirational document,” noting that the department is finalizing an implementation plan that will detail measurable actions and metrics to gauge progress on the goals. “I want to emphasize that the DOD can’t do it alone,” she said. “It will need the interagency. It will need our industry partners. It will need our global allies and partners, as well as our people on [Capitol Hill].” She added that the strategy was worked extensively with elected leaders, and there is a broad, bipartisan consensus around improving the industrial base and meeting the needs of the warfighter. “In my view, we can’t afford to wait,” Taylor-Kale said. “We have seen over the past few years the importance of why we need resilient supply chains — the importance [is] not just to us domestically, but also for our close allies and partners. “We think that the time for action is now,” she said. “We’re starting with this strategy and setting this vision. We’re wanting everyone to join with us so we can move forward, implement and meet the needs of warfighters today as well as for the future.”

The GREATest BRITAIN road trip, Part 2: Bath, Roman Spa City

The Royal Crescent, Bath. Photo by Alexey Fedorenko/Shutterstock.com

Story and photos by Leonie Milde contributing writer for MilitaryInGermany.com In the Summer of 2018, I felt I had seen and written enough (for now) about Germany and the United States and decided it was time for something new. So I packed up a little Mini Countryman and embarked on what I would call the GREATest BRITAIN road trip. A terrible pun for a life-changing experience. Over the course of 3 months and almost 11,000 kilometres, I ate way more beans on toast than any nutritionist would advise you to, climbed way less mountains than I had

anticipated, understood way less than someone fluent in English would expect from an English-speaking nation and fell umbrella over rain boots in love with the people, the culture and, most importantly, the landscape of this magnificent island(s). But isn’t the UK just loud pubs, rain, and vinegary food? Nope! In 7 parts, I will recap my adventure and introduce you to destinations that might not have been on your radar yet but absolutely should be. (The following travel tips do not require dropping everything for 3 whole months, each destination can be explored separately in a week or less.)

Part 2: Bath, Roman Spa City Less than an hour’s drive from Stonehenge lies the UNESCO World Heritage Bath. This quaint university town in the west of England with its Georgian architecture and fantastic culinary opportunities truly had me at hello. You won’t find ugly apartment blocks here like you do in all German university towns, instead, the city is lined with small, honey-colored houses that seem to have jumped straight from a Jane Austen novel. In fact, the author lived in Bath for five years between 1801 and 1806, during which time the city was a thriving spa resort and the highclass society believed it fashionable to frequent it. Turns out, I also thought myself very fashionable

to be wandering around its streets. Jane Austen Center and Tea Room Retrace Austen’s time in the city at the Jane Austen Center and tea room. A short guided is tour followed by a self-guided walk through the exhibition and ends with a fun dress-up opportunity including Mr. Darcy! I suggest concluding your adventure with a classical cream tea (a scone and a pot of tea) in the upstairs tea room where the waiters are dressed in period clothing, the cream is clotted and a basket of bonnets awaits your head for an authentic experience. You can also have a full afternoon tea, which consists of delicious little cakes, finger sandwiches and other delicacies.

Prior Park Landscape Garden The 18th century landscape garden offers a spectacular view over the city on a clear day (it’s England though so we’re back to the not holding our breath for sunshine thing) and opportunities for scenic walks no matter the weather. One of the walks is the famous Bath Skyline Walk, which takes you through forests, over fields with cows, past Sham Castle and back to the very bridge pictured below. The whole thing is about 6 miles but you don’t need to do it all in one day. Bonus: major Jane Austen vibes- I was sure Mr. Darcy would pop out of that mansion any moment. Sadly, he didn’t, but I shall return soon!

Granted, this looks a bit sad as it was taken in December but just imagine this meadow in spring and fall! Roman Baths Perhaps the most famous thing to do in Bath is visit the //baths//. The well-preserved Roman Baths lie under the modern street level (because, you know, they were built like 2000 years ago, no big deal) and attract more than 1 million visitors each year. Unfortunately they cannot be bathed in but toured and admired from up close. The “thoroughly modern Thermae Bath Spa, which houses the only natural thermal hot springs in Britain you can bathe in” can, in fact, be bathed in. The open-air rooftop pool comes with a spectacular view of the Bath Abbey along with naturally warm, mineral-rich waters enhanced by air seats and bubbling jets. Prices: Regular admission costs £36 for two hours. Extra treatments such as massages cost extra. Every additional hour costs £10.

The Royal Crescent The Royal Crescent is a crescent-shaped row of 30 houses built between 1767 and 1774, which is considered a great example of Georgian architecture. Aside from maintenance works, the exterior has remained pretty much the same.

Christmas Market In December, Bath has the most beautiful Christmas Market I have ever been to. With culinary delights going far beyond the obligatory Bratwurst and Glühwein, though there is plenty of both, you will find that you won’t want to eat anywhere else for the duration of your stay because there is just so much to choose from. Where to eat If you’re there anywhere between January and November, you will discover that Bath is a very vegan-friendly and health-oriented city with countless independent cafes and restaurants all over the city, not just the center. You can get curious delicacies such as beetroot lattes (pictured below) along with instagram-worthy smoothie bowls, salads, soups and so. much. more. My favorite places to eat were Beyond the Kale (can’t you just feel yourself getting healthy simply by reading that name?), Roots and Shoots, Cascara, Lulu Caffe, and Sky Blue Cafe but a simple stroll will take you past so many restaurants and

Roman Baths, Bath. Photo by Thinair/Shutterstock.com

cafés with all kinds of cuisines that you barely need to plan ahead. You will not go hungry in this town. Where to stay: The easiest way is via booking. com or airbnb. Accommodations range from Georgian town houses, modern luxury resorts, historical farm houses far off the buzzing city center and budget-friendly hostels like YHA.

Getting there: The closest airport is Bristol. There are Ryanair flights from Cologne starting at €10. A bus costing around the same will take you straight to Bath’s city center from there. Bonus: Bristol is a charming ‘little’ town full of second hand clothing and record stores with col-

orful houses and a serene river. The city is only a 12-minute train ride from Bath and there’s a bus to the airport from there as well (duh?). If you have an early or a late flight, I recommend stopping by for a stroll and some shopping on your way to or back from Bath. Look out for part 3 in next week’s edition.

How well do you know German license plates? by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Germany has a very special method of issuing license plates depending on where you live. Unlike in the United States, where plates are issued according to states with different colors or designs. In Germany all plates are designed with black letters on a white background, they have a D (Deutschland) and the European Union symbol in a blue rectangle on the left. Generally speaking, the larger a city, the shorter the abbreviation. For example, a car registered in Augsburg receives an A as the first letter, then a hyphen with one or two letters and a

row of one to four digits. It is also possible to register your car with a “wish plate” using a desired letter combination or your initials and a particular number you choose, such as a birthdate. A car registered as A-AB-123 could, but must not, be attributed to a person with the initials AB born on March 12. The second set of combinations is for somewhat smaller cities, such as Kaiserslautern with KL, which is well familiar in the area. As some letters are already taken, it might be necessary to assign two letters for a large city, such as HH, which stands for Hansestadt Hamburg. And, there are a few combina-

tions used for special purposes, such as X for NATO vehicles or CD (Corps Diplomatique) for diplomats. Any plate with an E at the end, such as KL-EC-456E, means that this is an electric car. My personal favorite I spotted once was GI-NA 14! Any smaller cities or even regions may be assigned a combination of three letters, an example of a town nearby is Homburg with HOM. There are also special combinations for official vehicles, such as NRW for police or leading politicians in Nordrhein-Westfalen. ABC IN KMC: Jeanne D’Arc Graphic by Alex Oakenman/Shutterstock.com

by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs You’ve certainly heard of Joan of Arc, or Jeanne D’Arc, the famous and heroic woman also known as the “Maid of Orléans.” There are ballads, operas, rock songs, a ballet and even an epic movie paying tribute to the courageous young woman who stood her ground six hundred years ago. But did you know that Jeanne was born in the small village of Domrémy in the Meuse Valley, now in the Vosges in the Lorraine region? It is just a twoand-a-half-hour drive away from the Kaiserslautern Military Community. Jeanne was born on or about Jan. 6, 1412, as a peasant girl who couldn’t read or write, but had complete faith in her visions. Her parents were Jacques d’Arc and Isabelle Romée. She had three brothers and a sister. Her father was a peasant farmer with about 50 acres of land, and he supplemented the family income as a village official, collecting taxes and heading the local watch. Jeanne was born during the Hundred Years’ War between England and France, which had begun in 1337 over the status of English territories in France and English claims to the French throne. Nearly all the battles had taken place in France, devastating its economy. At the time of Jeanne’s birth, France was divided politically. Jeanne came to be known as being rather rebellious and when she was 13, she began envisioning herself leading France to victory over England. At the young age of 16 she refused to engage in an arranged marriage and instead set

out on a mission to depose the English King Henry VI and install French prince Charles of Orléans as its rightful king. She cut her hair, learned to skillfully handle a sword and ride a horse. She put on warrior’s armor, gathered followers and led several successful assaults against the English in 1429. She was soon in charge of troops and had a clever strategic mind, but it is said that she never actively participated in combat. Nevertheless, she became a hero for her strategic planning and bravery, her forces grew and Charles took the crown. In 1430 she was captured by AngloBurgundians and charged with 70 crimes, including witchcraft and cross-dressing. Tragically, May 30, 1431, she was burned at the stake in the city of Rouen. July 6, 1456, the sentence was revoked and she was declared innocent of heresy, while more than 460 years later she was also declared a saint. The village, originally named Domrémy, has since been renamed Domrémy-la-Pucelle after Jeanne’s nickname, la Pucelle d’Orléans (“the Maid of Orléans”). From 1871 to 1918 the Alsace and Lorraine region belonged to the Prussian Empire and led by Emperor Wilhelm I. The French départements Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin were renamed Lower and Upper Alsace. After World War I the region was returned to France, then ruled as a separate French département until 1945. Due to its special historic situation, many Alsatians speak German or a dialect thereof until today and are well known for their specialties, such as tarte flambée, tasty wine and colorful pottery. Domrémy-la-Pucelle is a picturesque town where visitors can view Jeanne’s

Spaghetti with garlic, shrimp and parsley This quick and easy pasta recipe for spaghetti with garlic, shrimp and parsley is one of my go-to favorites for a fast, delicious school night dinner or light weekend supper. It serves up high-quality shrimp protein, heart-healthy olive oil, immune-boosting garlic, vitamin C from the lemon, and antioxidants, minerals and dietary fiber from the fresh parsley…and tastes amazing! The key to this recipe is to use fresh herbs, real lemon and not to overcook the shrimp…you just want to warm them and blend the flavors. I keep several bags of frozen shrimp in my freezer just for this dish. Ingredients

by MilitaryInGermany.com

(serves 4 for dinner, 6 for lunch)

• 1 lb. (16 oz.) package of spaghetti • 1 (24 oz.) package frozen, (cooked and peeled) large shrimp (35-45 pieces) • 2 tbs. extra virgin olive oil • 2-3 tbs. butter • 2-3 cloves of fresh garlic, minced (more to taste) • A handful of fresh flat-leaf Italian parsley, rinsed, dried and rough chopped • 1-2 tbs. fresh lemon juice (1/2 a lemon) • 1 tsp. fresh lemon zest • Salt and fresh-cracked black pepper to taste Instructions Put a large pot of water on to boil. (Use 4 quarts/litres for a pound of pasta.) While the water is heating place the frozen shrimp in a colander in the sink and run lukewarm water over them until thawed, about 5 minutes. (Don’t leave them in a bowl of water, the water should be moving). Once the shrimp are thawed, remove the tails (optional). Do this under running water to make it easier. Place the clean shrimp on paper towels to dry. Once the water is at a rolling boil, add 2 tbs of salt and drop in the pasta. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking. Follow the cooking time on the package (about 10 minutes) or until just al dente (firm to the bite). The pasta will continue to cook once combined with the sauce so slightly underdone is perfect! While the pasta is cooking add the olive oil to a medium-size cold saucepan and turn the heat to medium-high. Add the minced garlic and stir until fragrant, about a minute or two. Don’t allow the garlic to brown or it will be bitter. Add the butter, half of the fresh parsley, the lemon juice, and the lemon zest. Season lightly with salt and fresh-cracked black pepper and stir. Add in the shrimp and toss until well coated. Reduce the heat to low. You just want the flavors to blend and the shrimp to warm. You do NOT want to cook the shrimp. If your pasta will take a while, just take the shrimp pan off the heat and let it sit. The flavors will continue to blend. A minute before the pasta is done, carefully reserve a 1/2 cup of the starchy pasta water and set aside. Drain the pasta and add the hot pasta back into the hot pot, off the heat. Add the shrimp and sauce, scraping with a rubber spatula to get every tasty bit. Toss gently. Add the pasta water, a splash at a time, to smooth out the sauce to a lovely, satiny finish. Add the remainder of the fresh parsley. Serve immediately with a green salad, crisp white wine and fresh bread. To make it a meal in a bowl, add a cup of fresh or frozen peas, broccoli or asparagus pieces to the pasta water during the last 2 minutes. Drain with the pasta and toss with the sauce.

Most of us make resolutions on New Year’s Day and, despite our best intentions, give up on them well before the first of February. But did you know that it takes 21 days to form a new habit and 6 months to make it a routine? If you start today, by early summer, you’ll be well on your way to a healthier, happier you. Try these easy tricks to create 3 new habits that, in just 21 days, will produce a real and lasting change well into the new year.

1. Drink more water

Start your day with a nice, big glass of water — before your coffee or tea. This simple trick will rehydrate you after a long (or short) night of sleep and help wake up your body and your brain. Even a 2 percent level of dehydration can have a significant impact on your physical and mental performance. Keep a water bottle nearby After you have your first glass of water, fill a water bottle and keep it with you. Keep it in the car, in your sports bag, in your purse, and on your desk. Refill and sip it all day. Aim to drink half of your ideal weight in ounces everyday. For example, if your ideal weight is 120 pounds, drink 60 oz. of water. That’s less than 4 16 oz. glasses a day. If you have one before breakfast, you’re already 25 percent there. Good start.

2. Get active

You don’t have to work out 2 hours a day at the gym but you do need to do something that gets

your heart rate up… every day. Bike, hike, walk, jog, belly dance, ski, whatever. Mix up your routine to keep it interesting. Some people like to exercise first thing, before the day gets away from them. It helps them feel energized and ready to take on the day. For others, a mid-day break is what they need to power through the afternoon doldrums. I like to workout at the end of the day to release stress. It helps me refocus and enjoy time with my family. Figure out what time works best for you.

3. Plan meals

Schedule it — in writing Add your workout plan right into your daily planner. Commit to it just as you would a doctor appointment or an important meeting. Think of it as putting your oxygen mask on first so you can help others. It’s that important. Get your family on board and find a buddy to help keep you accountable. You’ll be helping each other.

Make “Dinner in a Bowl” with pasta, protein and veggies I know, you’ve probably been told that pasta is fattening and that carbs are bad. The truth is that pasta is a complex carbohydrate that can be a nutritious part of healthy diet. If you balance the carbs in the pasta with high-quality, lean protein, good fats and lots of healthy, fresh veggies, then it becomes the perfect nutrient-rich mix that you need to replenish your energy reserves and nourish your body. Pasta tastes great too.

Sneak “small acts of fitness” into your day Small changes can really add up to big results when you choose action over inaction. If it helps, just pretend you have a doctor’s prescription for these behaviors and you’ll need to report back on how well you followed his or her orders. Always take the stairs, never the elevator or escalator. Park as far as you can from the office, the mall entrance, the dry cleaner and the grocery store and walk. Think of your heavy grocery bags, or small children, as weights and make each “lift” count. At home, take the stairs 2 at a time, slowly. Believe me, these small acts of fitness really add up.

If you know what your menu plan is for the week, you won’t be tempted to impulse buy or opt for pizza. It saves time and money too. Make a weekly grocery list and stick to it Replenish your staples and choose organic, lean meats, seasonal fruits and veggies, and fresh herbs that fit your menu. Only buy what you need. Avoid processed food, sodas and junk food. Keep a variety of healthy foods at home for quick, easy snacks and meals.

Try one healthy pasta recipe once a week If you do this for a full 6 months, you’ll have 24 easy and nutritious pasta recipes that you can rely on. Recipes you can easily adapt to what’s in season, what’s available locally and your family’s preferences. You can include a few special occasion recipes too like meaty lasagna and pasta Alfredo for those times when you need to feed a crowd or just want some serious comfort food. Remember to watch the portion size, savor the meal slowly, follow with a healthy, fresh salad and enjoy the moment…la dolce vita (the sweet life).

How the Army outfits wounded Soldiers for life after recovery

KAISERSLAUTERN

MILITARY COMMUNITY CHAPEL SCHEDULE

by Mary Therese Griffin Army Recovery Care Program There are many moving parts to the Army Recovery Care Program, not the least of which is Adaptive Reconditioning. This includes equipment and logistics for Soldiers who want to recover and overcome their wounds, injury, or illness. “Part of our job is to help coaches, logistics folks, etc., work together to ensure our units and Soldiers have the best equipment available to use. That includes big events, like Army Trials and Warrior Games,” said Chris Uggiano, the Program Manager and Sports Director for the Adaptive Reconditioning Program for ARCP. Equipment for Soldiers at the Soldier Recovery Units doesn’t just stop with sports. “We need to make sure there’s enough equipment available to the Soldiers who can participate in adaptive events like rowing, swimming, cycling, or events for further recovery beyond sports like learning to play guitar or painting. We need to be sure we can introduce the Soldier to new things, whether it’s adaptive sports or another therapeutic form of therapy, so that they can function further in life beyond the SRU,” said Uggiano at a recent Adaptive Reconditioning Summit at Fort Belvoir, VA. In the Adaptive Sports world, Uggiano explained that Soldiers do not have to have any sporting expertise as a positive tool for recovery, just the desire to learn and improve. There is an order in which to achieve the experience. “Army Trials, for example, is not the place for someone to be on the bike for the first time,” says Uggiano. “We started educating at the unit level many years ago so the Soldiers understand what the equipment does, how to use it properly. He says this is a year-round daily process with educational opportunities for good reason. “Proper maintenance and safety are also super important. Safety is our number one priority with our athletes. Not only for the equipment user but for the people

around the equipment. It has to be running at its best and have the most optimum functions.” Also, at the recent summit, leadership shared what it means to have the right people in the right positions at the right time for the sake of the Soldiers. “This is government equipment, and we need to make sure it’s handled properly, but more importantly, it’s about the athlete and assuring them that their equipment will arrive at the event ready to go. The worst case for us is that an athlete has to drop an event or can’t participate in something they trained so hard for because something happened to their equipment.” Uggiano is clear: the Army Recovery Care Program has many opportunities to recover and overcome. The SRUs provide equipment for different sports and activities and replace them

when they break or exceed their lifecycle. From A to Z, equipping a Soldier in recovery is always top of mind in ARCP. “Having the right strings and right strap on a guitar so a Soldier can make beautiful music or the cyclist who has the right tubes and the right tires and the bike maintained so they can go for a 15-mile ride or even a five-mile bike ride with their family. We must have the right equipment for the best use for our Soldiers.” Uggiano says the Adaptive Reconditioning Program allows positive results to continue after the Soldier leaves an SRU. “To me, it’s not about the Soldier. It’s about that person becoming the best father, mother, wife, husband, or all-around best person in all aspects of life. We are getting them prepared for life after the SRU.”

Famous Bastei Bridge leading to the ruins of Felsenburg (Neurathen Rock Castle)

NATIONAL PARK from Page 1 park is captivating, mountainous and scenic (which how it got its name… it offers jaw-dropping views, just like Switzerland, but you’re also a few minutes’ drive from Czechia, where a dinner for five won’t break you financially, unlike Switzerland). So get ready for magical forests, incredible sandstone spires, canyons, a fantastic river, and all the adventure you can handle.

gear is not allowed (the sandstone is too soft for it), and strict requirements are in place for the use of bolts and ropes. But if you’re into climbing, this is one of the best places in Germany to visit.

tured, sacked, rebuilt again and again for several hundred more years. Finally, it gave up the ghost for good, but left behind some epic rooms and passages carved in the sandstone rocks near Bastei Bridge.

One special bridge, one spectacular castle ruin The Malerweg Trail also leads to the famous Bastei Bridge, which is a 250-foot long pedestrian bridge that spans a sandstone-spire-packed canyon. The amazing landscape resembles a German twist on something you might find in Zion National Park in the U.S. The bridge is an absolute highlight — one of the best sightseeing/ selfie-taking spots in Germany. And the views will make you want to stick around for a while and just…watch the world. Even better, the bridge goes somewhere. It leads, in fact to the ruins of Felsenburg, or the Neurathen Rock Castle. This isn’t your typical Rhine castle, even though it offers a similar history to many of Germany’s other castles. It’s been around for more than 800 years, and was cap-

Go to hike, stay for a theatre performance Another reason why Saxon Switzerland National Park is special? It offers the Felsenbühne Rathen open air theatre, which is one of the most spectacular outdoor venues in Europe. Set in a natural rock amphitheater, the Felsenbühne Theatre offers outstanding performances all year long. Visitors can see operas, music festivals, live music performances, plays, readings, artistic interpretations, and much more. Getting to Saxon Switzerland National Park By car, Saxon Switzerland National Park is six hours from Kaiserslautern, five hours from Wiesbaden, and 5.5 hours from Stuttgart. Outdoor options for everyone Saxon Switzerland National Park offers excellent year-round outdoor activities. With more than 1,200 kilometers of waymarked trails, the park is fantastic for hiking during any season — even winter. Speaking of the cold months, Saxon Switzerland is particularly well suited for families who have never skied before. There are a handful of small ‘winter sport resorts’ that offer downhill skiing, cross country skiing, and snowboarding for beginners. Parents (and non-parents,

too) can enjoy spa treatments and delightful dinners out, as well. As a bonus, Saxon Switzerland tends to be far less crowded than actual Switzerland. During spring, summer, and fall, though, the park shines. The Malerweg Trail bills itself as Germany’s most popular one, and with good reason. It winds through picturesque valleys, forests, and mountain passes, and passes a wide variety of attractions along the way (more on those later). At nearly 120 kilometers along, it offers options for day trips or multi-week adventures as you navigate through the Elbe sandstone mountains and track the Elbe River. Multiple options for lodging are available, from basic to campsites to resorts. High season for hiking is June through September, though the trail is open and accessible yearround. The park also offers expert options for outdoorsy types, especially for climbers. Billing itself as ‘the birthplace of free climbing,’ the park does have some amazing spots for adrenaline junkies. Beware of internet scams by German American Community Office

• Do not publish pictures of your DOD ID, IACS Cards, private or DOD Passports online • Report lost or stolen IDs to the proper offices • If selling items privately, be aware Germans might be skeptical and ask for an in-person meeting • Do not transfer large amounts of money to a person you met on the internet • Be careful when selling household goods or cars. If you are contacted by anyone who claims to send to a transporter to pick up the item and the driver giving you the money in person — dark red flag! • If you have fallen victim to internet scamming, please report the incident to the German police

Recently, we have been contacted by individuals who have fallen victim to internet scams. In some cases, the victims tried to buy an object from an alleged U.S. military member, transferred money and never received what they paid for. Other cases include building a romantic relationship online over a long time period that leads to the scamming victim being asked to send large amounts of money.
