Insider Kaiserslautern:
by MilitaryInGermany.com Little soothes the soul as well as a tour through a Japanese garden. These bastions of tranquility have it all: water features, beautiful koi, delicate cherry trees and an almost otherworldly sense of good order. In all honesty, Japanese gardens are needed now more than ever. Fortunately for you, Kaiserslautern is home to the Japanischer Garten, Europe’s largest Japanese garden and an excellent one, to boot. If you haven’t been yet, there’s no time like the present. Understanding the garden Essentially, a Japanese garden is like a living painting. Everything is coordinated to offer visitors the utmost feeling of orderliness. When you visit one, you feel like the world makes sense – and that you are an essential part of that world. The Kaiserslautern Japanese Garden pulls this off really, really well. The bulk of the garden is designed to make sure that key natural concepts are in complete harmony. These include: • Space: the garden’s layout is designed to maximize how things fit together horizontally, vertically, near and far. This includes an aversion to symmetry when it comes to non-buildings: you won’t find straight angles or anything that really screams “I was designed by a human!” in the garden. • Paths: these are essential to giving a visitors a feeling of total immersion. They also work together wonderfully with the water and vegetation features, so that you can visit during different seasons and get totally different experiences.
• Water and vegetation: the garden contains pond gardens (which are as cool as they sound), a large waterfall, and an essential feeling of “flow.” It also offers an incredible assortment of greenery that definitely looks as though world-class pruners have been hard at work. Some of the trees will take your breath away.
For visitors who are interested in visiting both the Japanischer Garten and the nearby, dinosaurfilled Kaiserslautern Gartenschau, joint tickets are available that offer a great deal for entry to both places.
History The garden opened its doors in 2000, but the idea stretches back nearly 30 years. Established on a site that was previously a sort of urban wasteland, it has grown in leaps and bounds since then. Expansion really accelerated prior to the 2006 World Cup, in which Kaiserslautern was a host city: Team Japan played a game in the city, and were visitors to the garden. Since then, the garden’s caretakers have continued to work to make it into one of the premier showcase locations in Kaiserslautern. Tickets to inner peace (and dinosaurs) Though attendance at the Japanese Garden (and pretty much everywhere else in Germany) suffered mightily at the hands of COVID-19, it is now open for business. Park operating hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday (though the garden is often opened on holiday Mondays). It is always a good idea to check the website (https://www. japanischergarten.de/) before you go: local restrictions might mandate that advance reservations are needed for a visit. Ticket prices are very reasonable. Adult tickets cost €5.50 and children up to 11 years old are free. One-euro reductions are available for students, and there is an evening rate of €4.50 per ticket for adults after 5 p.m.

(from a developmenta
by Lisa Helenius contributing writer Summer is almost here, which means great opportunities for family fun! But did you know that many (if not most) of our favorite (and some lessthan-favorite) summer activities can also help your child to develop in a healthy, ageappropriate fashion? Here is a list of activities that will help make this summer a winner – both in terms of great memories and child development.
Hike
We all know taking a family
hike is great for the body and mind. But, developing your visual system? Game changer! In this day and age of 2-dimensional screens, going out in nature offers amazing benefits to one’s visual system, especially for babies and young children with developing nervous systems. Being in the woods supports your eyes being able to focus between distances (accommodation), seeing in 3-D (depth perception), following a moving target (tracking – hi birdie!) and allowing both eyes to focus together on an object at the same time (convergence).
Pee
If your tot is still working on potty training, summer is the perfect time to increase his / her
awareness. Simply playing outside “in the buff” will allow your toddler to, let’s face it, pee in the yard and visually see how things work. By eliminating the mystery, they will feel empowered to be free with the pee! Then, give them a target (a frisbee?) and eventually put the potty chair out there!
Bubbles
Want the simplest, cheapest activity that will actually help develop your kids’ mouth muscles and calm their nervous systems? For the older ones, give them some gum and have a bubble blowing contest! For the little ones, use regular bubbles for the contest (they can still chew the gum!). Improving oral-motor coordination can positively impact speech development.
Swim
Swimming is your “one stop
shop” for building up your kiddo. First, being in the water provides body pressure (proprioception), which calms the body and brain. Swimming also promotes body awareness and motor planning, which are needed to function in PE class as well as in the grocery store! Besides improving strength and coordination of the big muscles in the body, swimming also improves oral motor strength and coordination!
Crowds
If you have a very sensitive tween or teen, attending a county fair, Fourth of July festival or even going bowling can be overstimulating. Lots of teens wear ear buds, hats, hoodies or sunglasses for a reason. They are trying to reduce visual and auditory stimuli that might stress them out. Choose your battles. Does it really matter if your teen is wearing ear buds in a crowd or if your 12-year-old wears her
hoodie like a permanent extension of her body?
Rocks
Need a summer craft project? Collect rocks and paint them. You can decorate your garden, give them to friends and neighbors or even take a walk in the woods and leave one to surprise a fellow hiker. While you’re there, have your kid build a fairy house using rocks, sticks, moss, leaves, pinecones, etc. It’s a “thing” these days. Really! Check it out online.
Clouds
When was the last time you really stopped and looked up at the clouds? Well, this summer make it a whole event for your kids! Pack a picnic, bring a huge sheet or blanket and make the announcement that you are taking a trip (to the backyard! to the park! to the roof!) to search for pictures in the sky. What shapes

do you see? Does anyone see an animal? I see an ice cream cone! Stay hydrated! It’s tough to get kids to drink enough. Did you know fresh fruit is a natural way to hydrate the body? Especially watermelon, which is 92% water – wow! Other high hydration options are strawberries, peaches, cantaloupes and oranges. Sports bottles and crazy straws can also motivate kids to drink water.
start and then they will end. While you’re watching the actual fireworks, help your child focus on something other than the noise. Example: do you think the next one will be white or red? How many swirly ones can you count? Chewing gum or eating a chewy snack can muffle the sound, as can noise cancelling headphones or ear buds with music. Simply snuggling your child and holding him in a deep bear hug can help him feel calmer. Or, give him something heavy to hold, like a heavy backpack or a younger sibling!

Drink
We all seem to have an extreme reaction to fireworks. Most of us are thrilled by them, but a select few who have sensory defensiveness can become really distressed. Think “Fight or Flight” response. If your kiddo is in the this category, here are some things to help him cope. Create a “social story” with the goal of preparing your youngster for what she is about to experience. Maybe look at fireworks videos online and talk about them beforehand. Emphasize that they will

Manage stress with mindfulness meditation Interview by Aaron Grogg contributing writer The past year-plus presented a lot of challenges, like remembering new rules and procedures, maintaining focus on what we are currently doing, and just “keeping it all together.” One approach that can help in all of these areas is mindfulness meditation. Below is an interview with Marianne Pilgrim, Occupational Therapist Registered/Licensed, Certified Hand Therapist and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction instructor. How can mindfulness meditation help improve our daily lives? Even in “normal” times, we deal with stress, like work, kids,
or just finishing our daily chores. Some of us have added stress, like past memories or traumatic experiences. We can’t completely remove these stressors, but we can try to improve living with them. That’s where mindfulness meditation could help. That’s encouraging. What is mindfulness meditation? Jon Kabat-Zinn, founder of the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program at the University of Massachusetts, defines mindfulness as “the awareness that arises by paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally.” So trying to pay attention to what’s happening right now, in the present moment. But what if we don’t like that
Pregnant? Not sure what to do? Call us. We Care!
moment? What’s so good about being in the present moment? Many of us don’t live in the present moment. We ruminate over past experiences or worry about the future. Mindfulness meditation helps us be in the present moment, even if it is difficult, to explore these ever-changing moments, maybe finding glimmers of joy we otherwise might miss. How does mindfulness meditation help us deal with stress? There’s nothing wrong with stress: actually, we need it to survive. But our thoughts and emotions can prolong it. When we experience stress, mindfulness practices might allow us to investigate and integrate it, take notice of what’s happening in the body and mind. Only in the present moment can we choose to continue as we typically do, or become aware of other possibilities. What are some examples of mindfulness meditation? Mindfulness meditation offers a variety of practices, including mindful eating, walking or move-
ment, or a body scan or sitting meditation. A simple exercise might be to bring our awareness to the present moment through the senses. Notice the sense of touch as we feel our feet on the floor or clothing on the skin. Sense gentle movement or sensations in the body as we naturally breathe. Look at an object with a new curiosity for shapes, colors, light. Listen to sounds as they come and go. Sense smells, or no smells at all. And lastly sense any lingering taste in the mouth, or really taste that sip of water or bite of food. And there you have it! A simple meditation on the sensations that can only be experienced in the present moment! That was great! But my week is already full: how do I fit this in? Anyone can practice for just a few minutes a day, even while folding laundry or mowing the yard. Anything can be mindful if you give it your full attention: noticing what is felt in the body, the breath, sounds, thoughts, emotions that present themselves.

So, it’s up to the individual: “You get out what you put in.” Exactly! Research supports consistency, even if only a few minutes a day. Well, it’s been great learning about mindfulness meditation! I see how this could help and I want to learn more! Try reading Full Catastrophe Living or Wherever You Go There You Are by Jon Kabat-Zinn, or the website www.PalouseMindfulness.com. Cycling Kaiserslautern: Four tips for great trips
Courtesy story Kaiserslautern is a secret (and sometimes not-so-secret) biking mecca. Located on the edge of the Palatinate Forest, the largest contiguous forest area in Germany, the surrounding area offers a varied landscape that is ideal for cyclists. Disappear into the forest, and you can find mountains in the south and hills, valleys and rivers like the Lauter or Nahe in the north. Or, follow the old imperial road along flat ground until you reach Saarbrücken or Saargemünd. Before you go, here are four tips to make sure your trip is as good as it can be.
1.Plan your route.
A great way to plan and select bike tours is by using Komoot (available at www.komoot.com). Komoot is available in many languages, including English, and has an app for smartphones. Tours can be filtered by type (bike tour, MTB, road bike and E Bike), route length/time and difficulty(easy, medium, difficult). Even special “Gravel routes” like https:// www.komoot.com/collection/1158490/en are possible. With a little search, something can be found for every requirement. Please note: this service is commercial and not fully free. Another option is completely free and can be found at https://www.tourenplanerrheinland-pfalz.de/. This site is also available in English.
2.Find a local gem.
Two popular cycling destinations in the area are Humbergturm/Bremer Hof in Kaiserslautern and the Ludwigturm (4 km south of the Johanneskreuz). The Mountainbikepark Pfälzer Wald is also a great choice. It consists of two bike parks: Trippstadt (https://www.bikeparktrippstadt.de/) and Dahn. Unfortunately, both are closed at the moment due to COVID19, but keep on eye on them when things start to open again. There is also a single-trail Parcours in Hochspeyer with approximately 20 routes, at least 25% of which are single-trail. More about these tours can be found at https:// www.mountainbikepark-pfaelzerwald. de/touren.html. The single trail course in Hochspeyer is currently open.
3.Check brakes and tires every time. 4.Maintain your bike regularly. Before each ride, check the brakes and the air pressure in the tires. The correct air pressure can almost always be found in small print on the side of the tire. If you are unsure, you can usually find a suitable bike store where you can have this briefly checked by a specialist. Often this service is free for regular customers or done quickly for little money. Due to COVID-19, however, you should call before a visit to a bike store and clarify when a visit is possible.
Make sure that, at least once a year, you ensure that everything on your bicycle is checked and adjusted. A regularly maintained bike with well adjusted gears, brakes and the correct air pressure increases the driving pleasure and reduces the risk of failure. If the bike still needs an unplanned workshop visit, there are some smaller and larger bike stores in the Kaiserslautern area that are sure to help. Expect longer waiting times during peak riding season between March and October. Once you’ve covered these bases, head outside and have some fun. See you out there! Editor’s note: information for this story was provided by Pfalz Bikes in Trippstadt, Germany. (https://pfalz-bikes.de)

Scream for ice cream! HEALTHY:
Because after all, July is national ice cream month. About 98 percent of household homes that consume dairy products also regularly purchase ice cream. The average American consumes more than 23 quarts a year, and children ages 2 to 12 years old and people over the age of 45 eat the most ice cream in our country. An average plain ice cream cone costs around $2.50. This means that moms and dads will shell out many coins in the name of ice cream in the course of a summer. It is estimated that the U.S. ice cream industry generates more than $21 billion annually. In addition to our finances, this treat can add up on our waistlines as well. An average cone comes in at about 250 calories and 7 grams of fat. Over the course of a summer, one can easily consume more than a week’s worth of your body’s dietary needs on ice cream alone.

Here are recipes for three very different variations. If you don’t have an ice cream maker, the best way to prepare the mix it to blend the ingredients in a high speed blender, then pour the batter into ice cube trays or in 6 to 8 freezer ziplock bags. Freeze for 30 minutes and then re-blend. The consistency is similar to soft serve. All recipes make 8 half cup servings.
Vegan Cake Batter
TRENDY:
H oney Lavender with Walnuts
Ingredients • 2 cups whole milk • 1/4 cup dried lavender • 1/3 cup honey • 5 large egg yolks • 1/4 cup sugar • 1 cup heavy cream • 1 cup chopped walnuts Directions Combine milk, lavender and honey, and steep or infuse overnight. The next day, place in a medium saucepan. Bring to a gentle boil, cover and remove from heat. Let steep for 5 minutes. Strain mixture using a cheesecloth, reserving milk and discarding lavender. Combine egg yolks and sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer. Beat on medium-high speed until very thick and pale yellow, 3 to 5 minutes. Meanwhile, return milk to a medium saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium-low heat. Add half the milk to egg-yolk mixture, and whisk until blended. Stir mixture into remaining milk, and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until mixture is thick enough to coat the back of a wooden spoon. Remove from heat, and immediately stir in cream. Strain mixture into a medium mixing bowl that has been chilled (either in freezer or in an ice bath). Add in walnuts. Either place “batter” into an ice cream maker or in small trays to freeze and re-blend.
Ingredients • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract • 1/4 teaspoon salt (don‘t omit) • 5 tablespoons brown sugar • 4 cups almond milk • 4 tablespoons coconut butter • (Sprinkles!) Directions This recipe is easy! Mix all the ingredients, and freeze accordingly. Best served with sprinkles!

“You scream, I scream, we all scream for ice cream!”
Ice cream is definitely a treat we should savor. Ice cream is a commodity we should spend wisely. Despite these costs, summer wouldn’t be summer without this beloved treat. There’s something we get from ice cream beyond its succulent, edible richness. It’s the feeling of freedom, the memory of long days of sunlight spent frolicking in our youth, and the momentary understanding that life can be simple and good. Straight from the bowl on a hot summer evening, brought to a barbecue or birthday party, or saved as the best date night indulgence, it wouldn’t feel like a proper summer without its presence. Whether it is a healthy option, an exotic version or a classic rendition, the following recipes offer a range of tastes suited to salute your sweet tooth.

Strawberry Ingredients • 1 cup strawberries, chopped • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt • 2 cups whole milk • 1/3 cup honey • 5 large egg yolks • 1/4 cup sugar • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (The divine “batter” takes two days to marinate the flavors, which will impress you!) Directions Marinate the strawberries in the honey, chill for 30 minutes. Add the Greek yogurt to this mixture. Chill overnight. In a separate sauce pan, heat the milk and the sugar over gentle heat until it comes to a simmer. In a separate bowl, stir together the egg yolks. Then gradually pour some of the milk into the yolks, whisking constantly as you pour. Scrape the warmed yolks and milk back into the saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly and scraping the bottom with a heatresistant spatula until the batter thickens enough to coat the spatula. Leave to be refrigerated overnight to chill. In a blender, whizz the marinated strawberries together with the Greek yogurt. Mix in the batter with this strawberry mixture. Pour the mixture into an ice cream machine and freeze according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Outdoors, nearby: Four excellent day trips Germany/France castle trail The German/French Castle Trail (known locally as the Deutschfranzösischer Burgweg) makes for a fantastic day trip. At roughly 30 kilometers long with lots of semistrenuous ups and downs, this loop trail isn’t something that most hikers will finish in one day. In fact, part of the fun is that it makes for an awesome repeat-visit destination.
Start in Schönau (an hour south of Kaiserslautern), and make the short hike up to the Pfaffenfelsen, which is an overlook that requires a ladder climb up a near vertical column of rock. You’ll have a major feeling of accomplishment and a reason to celebrate when you get done. You could also hike to Wegelnburg Castle. Sitting at over 500 meters above sea level, this is almost the best place north of the
Summer in northern Europe is pretty incredible. Greenery abounds. The weather generally behaves itself, especially compared to what you find in many parts of the U.S. And, crucially, there is so much to do – especially outdoors. Even COVID can’t stop access to all the natural awesomeness that Germany has to offer. Speaking of nature, the area surrounding the KMC is absolutely loaded. If you like walking, hiking, biking, or even just sort of milling around aimlessly in outdoor spaces, then you can’t miss here. To get your summer started, here are four excellent (and nearby – most are less than an hour away from the KMC) spots.
Located mostly south and east of Kaiserslautern, the Palatinate Forest offers massive opportunities for hikers and bikers. One of Germany’s largest and most beautiful stretches of wilderness, the forest is packed with towering trees and beautiful curving roads. It also has lots and lots of trails. So grab your trail map (or smartphone) and head toward
Alps for good views in Germany. On a clear day, you can see to Strasbourg, France, 60 kilometers to the south. Speaking of France…as long as COVID restrictions don’t apply, you should also experience one of the fundamental fun points of this hike and step into France. Hikers can tackle the French Fleckenstein and German Wegelnburg Castles in a round-trip loop that takes about 4-5 hours.

Mehlinger Heide Mehlinger Heide (Mehlingen Heath) is one of the biggest heath (which is generally a large wilderness area characterized by vegetation like scrub grass, heather and gorse) areas in the KMC and a place of pure beauty. In the past, the heath was used as a training ground for French army
Falkenstein to Donnersberg This one features two castle ruins, one nature reserve, and a whole lot of wilderness. Start in the little village of Falkenstein, which is about 45 minutes northeast of Kaiserslautern. There, you’ll find Falkenstein Castle, which is cool but which is also most useful as a jumping-off point into an excellent stretch of forest to the east of the village. Once you’re in the woods, you’ve got a ton of options for exploring. You can wind your way into the center and visit the valleys and peaks of the Spendel-Wildenstein Nature Reserve. Or you can make your way through the forest to Donnersberg, a nearly 700-meter-high peak (which is really high for this part of Germany) that offers another battered castle. Again, the ruins are nice. But it’s the views and the outdoor time that make this trip so memorable.

Johanniskreuz, Elmstein, Frankenstein or Hardenburg. Go by car or motorcycle. But once you feel fully immersed in the forest, then stop. Get out of your car and disappear into the woods. Wander until you feel peaceful or irritatingly tired. Then return to the car for the well-earned sense of victory. As a bonus, the Palatinate Forest is beautiful year-round, and particularly so in late summer and autumn.
tanks, and no trespassing was allowed. It was not until 2001 that it was turned into a natural reserve. You’ll give thanks now that the tanks are gone. The most attractive time to visit is in late summer, when the heath is in full bloom. You will be reminded how miraculous nature can be. Just 20 minutes east of downtown Kaiserslautern, it’s also wonderfully accessible.

Easy Dog Tricks or anything else your dog will associate with having been a good pup.
www.Constantiam.jimdofree.com
In case you didn’t fall into a YouTube hole of dog trick videos during lockdown like I did, you might be looking for a few fun and easy party tricks to teach your dog. Especially on rainy days or during global pandemics, this training will exhaust your dog just as much as a long walk. For younger dogs, 5-10 minutes at a time is perfectly sufficient and even grown dogs can’t always concentrate for much longer. Try going for two to three small training sessions a day. At first, you’ll want to reward them for even the smallest effort in the right direction. This is known as “shaping” and the important part is not to say the preferred word too soon. Your dog will only get confused as to what exactly it is supposed to do when it hears the cue. Instead, reward decent behavior with a treat and the desired behavior with a treat and the word. My pup is very food-oriented. If your dog is not motivated by treats or loses interest in them too quickly, you might want to try rewarding your dog with its favorite toy, high-pitched congrats, pats
Catch
Start by dropping food into their mouths from half an inch above. The goal is to get them to open their mouths for a moving object rather than taking it from your hand or watching it fall to the ground. My dog took forever at this stage so don’t despair. Once they get the gist of it, drop it from a bit further above and then start throwing it headon. Dogs are far-sighted so if you’re struggling with the close drop, see if you can get better results by throwing it from a distance right away. The tricky bit here is to pick up treats that fell to the ground before your dog gets to them. Otherwise it rewards itself and it will take longer for it to see the point in catching it. Move further and further away and practice your throwing skills as your dog practices its catching skills.
Paw
Honestly, this pretty much came as a reflex to my dog but I love it because it looks so polite.
Pet Health Practice C O N S T A N T I A M Acupuncture Leeches Magnetic field mat
Color light therapy Vitals check-up Pet massages
You stretch out your hand and either they will reach for it, or you’ll just grab theirs to shake it. While you’re shaking it, say “paw” and reward with a treat. Do this lots and lots of times. Reward while you say the word and shake the paw. After a while, your dog will know what you want it to do and you can start saying the word as it is reaching for your outstretched hand. The final stage is saying the word and having the dog lift its hand in response. If you prefer wordless communication, you may want to hold out your hand or a fist for it to react. If you want your dog to shake your hand for a longer time, just delay the reward a bit more each time.
Wave
Wave is similar to paw, so I suggest training that first and taking it from there. Once you’ve established and used it for a few days, just reach out your hand without shaking theirs. Out of habit, they will reach out theirs and that’s when you reward. With time, hold the treat up higher and they will follow it with their paw.
by Leonie Milde contributing writer
Eventually, you just need to lift your hand and they will wave.
Roll over
Do NOT practice this within at least one hour of eating a meal or the dog will be at risk for a twisted stomach. Get your dog to lie down. Use a treat to lure it to one side, gently nudge them in the desired direction if necessary, and reward for lying on their side.
Once you’ve done that a few times, you can graduate to nudging them towards rolling over. Again, this comes more naturally to some dogs than others, so don’t despair. Mine needed a LOT of nudging but eventually got it. I said the word while she was in the process of rolling over, not while she was on her side or stuck on her back.
Happy training!

is more typical. For your “I primi” (first course) try “canederli,” which are bread balls flavored with cured ham pieces, pancetta or other cold cuts along with milk, eggs and cheese. Canederli are traditionally served in broth or drizzled with butter. For “I secondi” (second course) look for “Tyrolean goulash” which is often served with polenta. Top Tip: Order cheese for dessert instead of something sweet. The alpine region of southern Tyrol is famous for its dairy products. Bonus Top Tip: A trip to the wineries near Verona is a must during your tour.

endless, this article will focus on the northern part of the lake, namely Riva del Garda, Linfano and Torbole.
or epic beauty, it’s hard to beat the trip to Lake Garda. As you drive down from Brenner Pass (1,370 meters/4,495 feet) between Austria and Italy the landscape goes from Alpine to Mediterranean. On the road winding down to your destination, you start to see full unobstructed views of the spectacular emerald blue Lake Garda (Lago di Garda) and Mount Baldo (Monte Baldo) to its left sitting at 2,218 meters (7,277 feet). Your heart races from the sheer natural beauty as well as the tight “S’’ turns that don’t stop until you have landed in “The Pearl of Lake Garda” or Riva del Garda. Located in the Lombardo, Veneto and Trentino regions of northern Italy, south of Austria, he enormous lake covers 369 square meters (approximately 142 square miles) and offers something for everyone who likes water or land. Though options for exploring the lake and its environs are almost literally
Staying There are plenty of options when it comes to lodging in Riva del Garda, Torbole and surrounding areas. A good travel website will help you find traditional lodging. However one option you may want to consider is camping! With the wonderful Mediterranean climate, you will sleep well at night and get to spend most of your vacation outside soaking up the Italian sun. Camping in Europe is a little closer quarters than you may be used to in the U.S. but there are numerous options in the Garda area. You can find sites that have swimming pools, restaurants and full bathroom facilities. There are even sites just a short walk to the lake.
Eating Any trip to Italy isn’t complete without getting your daily dose of gelato, the mouthwatering cousin to ice cream. You can feel better eating gelato every day for many reasons. It contains less fat than traditional ice cream (about 30% less calores and fat than the average vanilla ice cream), rstock.com te uses more milk (and less a.q/Shut n n a cream) and does not use egg yolks. More excuses can be provided upon request! When it comes to your main course, definitely save a day for pizza. Let’s face it... we as Americans are obsessed with pizza. Look for something with the name “Napoli” and “wood fired” in the description (try Ristorante Pizzeria Maffei in Riva del Garda) and you will likely get what you are looking for. Since Lake Garda is so far north, the “Alto Adige” (Southern Tyrol) mountain cuisine, which is heavy on cheese and meat, Pho

Best of all, for a prime location, your vacation will cost a fraction of a hotel stay. Be warned, though: during the high season (Pfingsten vacation — which is usually the end of May to early September) the best sites book out early. If you strike out with your search, you may want to try Camping Brione (www.CampingBrione.com) in Riva del Garda. It is only a few minutes walk to the lake and close to plenty of restaurants and shops. For just 37€ a night, you can get a camping spot or a bungalow (4 person) for around 110€ per night. Top Tip: Pick up your full camping set up at your local Outdoor Recreation Center. www.Camping.info is a user-friendly site.

The minute you arrive in Riva del Garda, you will be able to tell this is a hot-spot for bikers (the pedaling kind). Mountain biking is very popular here with technical trails that will even make hard core enthusiasts think twice. Never fear! There are loads of options for cruising, and with the popularity of e-bikes at an all-time high, you can ride all day and have gas left in the tank to go swimming in the evening. One e-biking trip you may want to consider is Lake Ledro (Lago di Ledro). The lake sits at an elevation of 655 meters (2,148 feet) above Lake Garda. A popular route starts on the west side of Riva del Garda and ascends using the Via Giacomo to the Sentiero della Ponale. This path is carved out from the cliffside and overlooks the lake along the way up. Because this route is so popular, you may want to start earlier in the morning. The ride is about 24 Km (15 miles) with a 944 meter (3,100 feet) elevation gain but don’t worry...you are on an e-bike! Once up in Ledro, you can ride around the lake on your bike and go for a swim (it is an alpine lake, so a bit chillier than Garda). Top Tip: Try e-bike Garda Focus Rent and Tour in Riva del Garda (www.e-bikegarda.it). Ask the amazing staff if you can keep the bikes overnight and take chargers with you so you will have plenty of juice for the next day’s ride.
Swimming and SUPing Stand Up Paddleboarding, or SUPing, earlier in the day is the best bet for a nice smooth lake. Take it from me; you don’t want to be paddling back to your beach with a strong headwind when the afternoon wind picks up. There is less windsurfing traffic earlier in the day and the surfers really get cooking on a good day after lunch. The beaches in Riva del Garda are great but can get busy. Try walking or riding along the lake (there are plenty of paths) and find a quiet spot like the one we found south of Torbole. Look for pontoon docks you can swim out to. Top Tip: Try Torbole Beach. It’s quiet and not crowded. Bring water shoes since most lakes and beaches in Europe have rocks and not sand. Your feet will thank you.

Torbole at Lake Garda, Italy.

If you are interested in learning to wind or kitesurf, there are a number of schools (try Sircolo Surf Torbole at www. circolosurftorbole.com) that offer lessons for beginners. Lake Garda is known as the mecca for wind-water sports in the Alps. Consistent wind, beautiful weather and alpine water make a perfect combination that
attracts fanatics from far and wide. The feel of skimming along the water under wind power is exhilarating, but can be tiring to learn. Top Tip: Do some pull ups before your first lesson because it is a workout (but a lot of fun!). Your Lake Garda trip will be one you talk about for years to come. If you want to make the trip even more epic, make a side trip to Venice as it is only 2.5 hours by car.

Traveling
alone
Story and photo by Leonie Milde contributing writer “I have found out that there ain’t no surer way to find out whether you like people or hate them than to travel with them.” — Mark Twain People often ask me if I get bored when I travel alone. The answer is always no. Sometimes it’s peoplewatching over expensive hot chocolate, sometimes it’s whiskey with strangers at hostel bars and other times it’s just an early night with a good book. I have met some pretty amazing humans on the road that I would have never encountered had I sat next to a friend.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I have traveled extensively with friends and family and nothing compares to the sweet privilege of sharing travel memories with a loved one. But every once in a while, I pack a tiny pink suitcase and ask Ryanair or DB where to go next. Even though more than a year of “house arrest” may not put you in a solo traveling mood, there are so many benefits to it, especially after a period of time where your own company may have become more of a nuisance to you. Now that you’re in Europe, the next metropolis is never more than a train or plane ride away. If you look out for deals, this trip won’t

blow a dent in your wallet either. First you should decide on a type of trip (city trip, spa, camping/ hiking), means of transportation (plane, bus, train, car), type of accommodation (camping, hostel, Airbnb, hotel) and off you go! Here are some great perks to travelling away from your comfort zone, straight into an adventure: • Become a problem solver. You will inevitably be faced with unforeseeable situations and there will be no safety net to take care of it. Thankfully, you’re smart and fearless and just needed a little nudge. • Go on a tech detox. You may want to use social media as a crutch to feel less alone at first and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that but once you get the hang of being by yourself, you might want to consider blocking electronic distractions and truly enjoying your time off. This will feel amazing after potentially having been glued to your screen throughout the pandemic. • Learn to love and appreciate

yourself more as you become more self-aware. Learn the language. You will hear a lot more of it once you’re not surrounded by fellow English speakers. Meet new people. This one sounds like a cliché but it’s true nonetheless and there hasn’t been a lot of that in the past 15 months. Go at your own pace. Breakfast at 2? Dinner at 5? It’s all up to you! Find out what you like doing. Whether it’s shopping, museum visits, sightseeing, picture taking or sitting in a park with a magazine, nobody can reschedule your plans for you. Become more decisive and boost your confidence as a result.
As you can see, some of these are quite obvious and some are simply inevitable. You can’t go a whole weekend without eating by yourself at least once or trying to understand a foreigner at some point (unless you go to an English speaking country). Waiters will give you a certain look when you ask for
a table for one but once you remind yourself that alone does not equal lonely, you will feel independent and liberated rather than lost and stood-up. Lastly, some tips to avoid feeling lonely: • Plan your itinerary in advance. A packed schedule will not leave room for self pity. • Set goals for your trip. Do you want to learn how to take amazing photos? Read three books? Try as many pains au chocolat as possible? Follow your mission and keep your mind occupied. • Follow your gut. If you feel unsafe, stick to more crowded areas. • Don’t feel bad if your screen time increases. Our phones provide comfort in unfamiliar situations and that’s okay. There’s a chance you won’t like it. There’s also a chance you’ll never want to travel with a friend ever again. The most likely outcome, however, is that you will have simply spent a nice weekend in a wonderful city.

Along the Rheingau Riesling Route Beer drinkers may enjoy a good pub beer crawl, but wine aficionados will love the Rheingau Riesling Route! The route runs from the town of Flörsheim to Lorch, which is close to the city of Wiesbaden. The beautiful drive is 70 kilometers in total and sign-posted throughout. This drive is great for the whole family because, besides being able to purchase wine in the Riesling center of the world, you also pass beautiful vineyards, famous castles, historic manors, and picture-perfect views of the Rhein River. 1. The Route On the map that is sign-posted by the region, you can find the route for driving (thick line), walking/biking trails (dotted lines), and also the wine stands (black wine glasses).
I suggest you head to the Seilbahn (cable car) to go up and see Germania at the ‘Niederwalddenkmal Monument’. However, since this is the Riesling tour, make sure you buy a small bottle of Riesling Sekt from the cable car and drink it while taking in the extraordinary view high above the vineyards. Enjoy the absolute silence as you ascend higher away from the town. The only sounds you will hear are the faint popping noises from your bubbly Sekt and any Sekt glass clinking! Cheers!
5&6. Schloss Johannisberg Next on the route, there is the must-see castle: Schloss Johannisberg! This impressive castle has a wine shop, café, and incredible views of the Rhein. It is also the perfect spot to sip a glass of the Schloss Johannisberg Riesling, which they have been making for over 900 years. They are also known for creating the first late harvest wine, called Spätlese, which is a popular sweet-tasting wine.
5 many small wineries open for tastings and wine purchases. Just like you’ll find in any good fairytale town, Eltville has an incredible castle from the 14th century called the Electoral Castle. After you enter the gift shop, for a small fee, you can walk to the top of the tower for views of the river and beautiful castle gardens. Customize your experience! The Rheingauer Riesling Route continues through the city of Wiesbaden and then a longer stretch of road winds through smaller picturesque wine towns like Hochheim. Whether you explore the Riesling Route all in one day or only visit
1 2&3. Rüdesheim am Rhein The beautiful route from Lorch along the Rhein River will make you feel like you are driving in a scenic painting. A great place to stop is in the romantic Altstadt (Old Town) of Rüdesheim am Rhein. You could get lost exploring the winding cobblestone streets all day!

a few towns, or if you sampled at the wine stands or filled your car with boxes of wine: the Rheingauer Riesling Route is an absolute delight that should not be missed during your time in Germany! Just think, years down the road when you order a glass of German Riesling in another part of the world, you can confidently say, “Oh, I’ve been there!”
4. Oestrich-Winkel

Nowadays, we are lucky enough to be able to load the trunks of our SUVs with this amazing wine. But more than 250 years ago, this area was used for loading wine barrels onto decks of ships traveling along the river. In Oestrich-Winkel there is a crane that was built in 1744on the bank of the river and along the route. Now a protected monument, the construction inside consists of two massive mill wheels. Interestingly, it is based on a 2000-year-old technology used during the Roman era. The inside is open to the public during certain times of the year, which is posted at the crane. There are also many wineries to discover in this special town. 7&8. Eltville The route then weaves around the enchanting town of Eltville, which feels like a fairytale town... with wine! There are

Germany’s excellent wine regions
Most new arrivals to Germany are familiar with the quality of German beer. Rightfully so. Beer is governed as food here. There are bound to be great choices. But many may not know that Germany is also home to an incredible array of high quality wines, most of which are grown within a stone’s throw from the KMC. If you don’t know much about wine, or even about German wine, prepare to be impressed. You should also get ready for some amazing day trips. Thank you, Romans The history of winemaking in Germany stretches back millennia. As Roman soldiers made their way north and conquered new lands, they brought vines with them (which was easier than bringing huge barrels of wine over the Alps). In the river valleys of what is now Germany, they found excellent terrain and began cultivating grapes. In one form or another, that practice hasn’t stopped since. Winemaking became more regulated under Charlemagne, was governed (and improved) by medieval monasteries, and was shaken up by Napoleon. And though the sheer amount of land used to grow vines has diminished through the centuries, the regions that remain are excellent. Surrounded by vineyards The KMC is almost literally surrounded by vineyards. The Pfalz and Rheinhessen regions flank the eastern side, and the Nahe and Mosel regions block the north. If you head south, you’ll cross a border and run smack into the French
Alsace (which is a subject for a different article). Either way, you can find amazing vineyards and fascinating stories nearby – usually an hour or less from where you live. Here are some of the highlights: • Pfalz. Located just a short drive from the KMC, the Pfalz region is well-known in Europe for the Bad Dürkheim wine festival. It also produces an outstanding array of white wines, such as Riesling and Pinot Gris. The Pfalz also famously produces the red Dornfelder wine, which often makes for a wonderful complement to barbecued food. • Rheinhessen. This is one of Germany’s oldest wine regions: the Romans loved this area. Today, huge amounts of grapes are grown on the western bank of the Rhein river. For a long time, white wines like the Silvaner dominated here. Recently, Rheinhessen vintners have also begun specializing in red wines and sparkling wines. Travelers from the KMC can reach this region in about 30 minutes. • Nahe. The Nahe region is small but mighty. Named after the river that flows through an intense variety of landscapes, many grape varieties thrive here. These include the MüllerThurgau and Riesling (both white wines), and the red varieties Dornfelder and Pinot Noir. Often overlooked in favor of the larger Rheinhessen or the picturesque Mosel, the Nahe is kind of like a secret hidden in plain sight. Visit a village like Niederhausen, which is a just over an hour away from Kaiserslautern, and enjoy. • Mosel. Though most of the great Mosel villages (like Bernkastel-Kues or Piesport)
are a little over an hour away from the KMC, the region often feels like a whole other country. It’s because the terrain is jaw-droppingly beautiful. Steep curving roads, hidden valleys, clean water – it’s simply lovely. The white Mosel wines are excellent. Because many of them are slightly sweeter than usual, Mosel whites are often a good entrée for Americans who are just learning to enjoy wine. Explore a lot, sip a little Once you start digging in, you’ll be amazed at what you’ll find. There are also grand wine growing regions near Stuttgart and BadenBaden, and the opportunities to explore these regions are almost endless. A quick note: the culture surrounding alcoholic drinks is often very different in Europe than it is in the United States. In Germany, wine is less a functional beverage (i.e. something you drink for the sake of drinking) and more something to be savored and experienced. Drinking wine means appreciating it for the history, culture, and beautiful regions from which it comes. It is also, almost always, way better when paired with food. For a complete (and fascinating) history about wines in Germany, be sure to check out one of the wine museums in Oppenheim (an hour away from Kaiserslautern) or Bernkastel-Kues (90 minutes away).
