Embrace the Service, serve our great nation

s I prepare for retirement after 28 years and depart Ramstein Air Base and Germany at the end of the month, I was asked to reflect on my career.

It is a bittersweet moment for my wife and I, since we literally grew up together in the Air Force.

We met in 1988 and married in 1989. During that time, we have traveled to nine assignment locations, raised our children, and watched when it was time for them to raise their own. Though

Roberson, who has been selected for reassignment to Joint Base San AntonioRandolph, Texas, as commander of Air Education Training Command, reflected on his time at 3rd Air Force.

“It has been a tremendous privilege to work with all the Airmen of 3rd Air Force, 17th Expeditionary Air Force, to be a part of this great USAFE-AFAFRICA staff and to be back in Germany,” Roberson said. He went on to speak to Ray. “I know what you're getting as your new commander, and I can tell everyone that

our location, job, and housing may have changed, the one thing that was steady for us was a safe place to call home, the U.S. Air Force.

Included in the ever evolving years was ironing the old Pickle Utility uniform to stiffness equal to cardboard, and then donning three more uniform variations.

Not without mention, the switch from naming conventions in our force from branches to flights, aircraft generation squadrons to aircraft maintenance squadrons, regulations to instructions, and Airman Performance Reports to Enlisted Performance Reports.

Ray comes to 3rd Air Force from the Pentagon where he served as the director of Global Power Programs, Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition. He is a command pilot with over 4,000 flight hours in seven different aircraft.

The general expressed his gratitude toward Roberson and thanked him for his leadership.

Ray then addressed the men and women of the 3rd Air Force and 17th Expeditionary Air Force.

“We stand at the strategic crossroads of the world at an incredibly important time,” he said. “You will be the difference between peace and stability, and the success and failure of the combined and joint team ― I believe that to my very core. I just pledge to you my utmost leadership in these coming years.”

today, long term deployments in the ’80s and ’90s lasted around 30 to 45 days, usually to some type of great hotel in places like Paya Lebar Air Station, Singapore, or Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska for hardship training.

It will toss you around when you need a change of scenery; it will upset you when someone talks negatively about your Air Force flag; and it will make you cry when it’s time to leave.

It’s something that becomes a part of you ― if you let it.

Embrace the service, and you will work a long and happy career.

I wish you much success and happiness as you serve our great nation, and I will rest comfortably knowing that our service is in great hands.

37th AS gives back with orientation flight Story and photo by Senior Airman Nicole Sikorski 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Airmen from the 37th Airlift Squadron gave a big “thank you” to German local national employees who work on Ramstein through an orientation flight June 29.

The flight was designed to give the German teammates a better understanding of what Airmen at Ramstein do and give them an appreciation of how much their work contributes to the mission.

More than 20 smiling and excited faces boarded the C-130J Super Hercules.

Some had never flown on a U.S. Air Force aircraft before.

Laundry, dry cleaning issue

Currently, the Vogelweh laundry and dry cleaning facility has moved its operations to the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center on Ramstein. All other locations are still operating, but are not accepting clothing for dropoff processing. Items can be picked up during limited hours of operation between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the respective locations. AAFES and installation agencies are aggressively working a solution to assist customers in offering full-service capabilities for their dry cleaning needs.

Victoria Adams, CFC-O executive director, thanked Gen. Frank Gorenc, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa commander, for the continued support from USAFE to the CFC-O. She briefed him on new plans and programs for the 2015 campaign and offered suggestions on how leadership can extend the reach of the CFC-O. “I think this is a wonderful program,” Adams said. “I’m always amazed to see men and women who are already giving so much of themselves, and their families extend their service in this way. We raise

The CFC-O raises funds annually for more than 26,000 organizations

and all five branches of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Commanders can use CFC-O funds around base to improve the quality of life for service members

to enhance their experience living abroad. These funds are also used to help families of deployed service members, for emergency assistance, to support recreational activities and to improve facilities for those who are far from home.

“This fundraiser is an American tradition to share and support charitable organizations,” said Constance Baker, U.S. European Command and U.S. Africa Command campaign manager. “Giving through the CFC-O is easy and allows us to give with confidence to the cause that means the most to us. The need in the world seems staggering, but together through the CFC, we are changing lives for the better.”

Federal workers can donate once a year by cash, allotment, credit or debit card, and electronic checks.

The CFC-O campaign for 2015 will be open to donations from Sept. 21 to Nov. 20.

Formed in 2012, the council supports the headquarters’ diversity initiatives by promoting awareness and value of diversity and inclusion across their major commands.

The council oversees wing councils, educates senior leaders on diversity and partners with host nations to share initiatives to educate service members.

“We began this initiative three years ago and today we are helping build on the fifth tenant, partnering with our host nations,” said Steven Von Neumann, USAFE-AFAFRICA Warrior Preparation Center lead action officer and USAFEAFAFRICA Diversity and Inclusion Council member.

The team of German officers briefed councils throughout Europe as well.

They showed how German officers and enlisted members are trained through a variety of briefings, computer-based training and seminars.

“Speaking to Americans about diversity is very inter-

esting for me and very important,” said German armed forces Lt. Col. Michael Brendel, Leadership Development and Civic Education Center Koblenz senior civil servant. “It’s important for me to exchange knowledge and experiences made in diversity. I hope we will continue our mutual work.”

The meetings left the doors open for more opportunities to work together with potential visits and exchanges of ideas and service members.

New CG assumes command of 21st TSC

senior, battle-tested Department of the Army logistician assumed command of U.S. Army Europe’s premier support formation during a memorable change-of-command ceremony held June 24 at NCO Field on Daenner Kaserne in Kaiserslautern.

U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Duane A. Gamble took the reins of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command from U.S. Army Maj. Gen. John R. (Jack) O’Connor before some 350 American and German military and community leaders and international guests. This also included representative formations of troops from across the command’s subordinate organizations, amid traditional pomp and circumstance.

partner operations as well as O’Connor’s dynamic tenure as CG during his remarks.

Hodges acknowledged “the sacrifices that go into being a senior commander,” praising O’Connor’s performance in demanding times. He also praised the performance and determination of the organization he led.

“I don’t think there’s a sustainment command in the Army that works harder,” Hodges said. “I know there’s nobody better than the 21st because there’s nobody doing more than you all do. You’re stretched paper-thin, from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea. You have 51 countries in the USAREUR and U.S.

“It’s important for the local nationals to know how much the military members appreciate the work they do,” McKee said. “Everyone in the group today has a direct piece in making the mission at Ramstein happen. It’s also a physical example of the great partnership that we share here.”

According to Recor, the flight was much appreciated by locals as well as the pilots who were glad to have them on board.

“It was great to look around the flight deck and see the pride,” Recor said.

Giving back to the community and local partners is key to accomplishing the Air Force mission.

O’Connor praised the international regional effort he energetically supported as a key leader. “‘Strong Europe’ is renowned across not only

Europe, but the globe as the place to be if you want to see readiness, leader development and the longest standing and enduring alliance in action,” O’Connor said.

The outgoing CG also praised the team he commanded for two years.

“I would like to personally thank all of you Soldiers and families for your continued selfless service and your sacrifices,” O’Connor said.

“Nobody gave success to you on a silver platter. As the lifeblood of USAREUR, you were always there with the right stuff at the right time … you stood tall as Army professionals, staying ready and living resilient under these unthinkable times and environments.”

O’Connor will retire from the Army after more than three decades of distinguished service. His eventful two-year command of the U.S. Army’s leading sustainment arm included significant force transformation, the addition of a medical brigade, establishment of a major transit hub in Eastern See Command, Page 13

SOFA stamp: a must before leaving Germany

by Robert Szostek U.S. Army in Europe Customs Public Affairs Office WIESBADEN, Germany ― Many of us take trips to the United States and other countries during this time of year. Some people should be reminded, however, that a valid Status of Forces Agreement stamp or card is needed before departing in order to return to Germany.

German immigration officials report that U.S. forces family members and civilians are showing up at Frankfurt International Airport and Ramstein Passenger Terminal without proper documentation.

German officials have been very lenient in the

past. However, they have noticed an increase in personnel leaving and re-entering Germany without a SOFA stamp or card.

“Military members stationed in Germany are required to present a military ID card, service travel orders and, if on leave, a valid leave form when leaving or entering Germany,” said Wil Respress, chief of the U.S. Army Customs Agency Europe office, on Ramstein.

For family members and civilian employees, a valid passport and SOFA stamp or card are required to cross the German border.

When questioned about SOFA cards, many travellers stated they were not aware that this is a mandatory requirement.

However, the wording on the stamp or card makes the intent clear: “The bearer is a member

of a civilian component or dependent of a member of a force or civilian component of the United States of America and is entitled to unrestricted entry into and exit from the Federal Republic of Germany.”

“Please ensure your family members have SOFA stamps or cards to comply with German immigration requirements,” Respress said.

Violators can face harsh fines and possibly even deportation, he stressed. Contact your servicing passport office to obtain a SOFA card.

Finally, travellers should inform themselves of general entry requirements of any foreign country they will be visiting well in advance of their departure to ensure they have the required type of passport and, if applicable, visa.

Ramstein and Landstuhl host upcoming CLEP-a-thon

by Staff Sgt. Leslie Keopka 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Ramstein and Landstuhl will host their second CLEP-a-thon of 2015 Monday to July 17 on Ramstein and at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center.

The CLEP-a-thon is a weeklong testing marathon for individuals needing to fulfill requirements for their

Community College of the Air Force degree. CLEP and DSST tests are options for testing out of the required class, saving both time and money.

Typically, appointments must be scheduled in order to take a CLEP. However, during the CLEP-a-thon, the education centers on both installations are offering walk-in appointments for any active-duty member, regard-

less of branch, as well as dependents.

While appointments are not necessary during this week, individuals still need to register for the desired CLEPs they wish to take. To register, visit http://clep.collegeboard. org/register/exam.

Participants need to print out their completed registration voucher and bring it along with a U.S. military ID card to the testing center dur-

ing that week.

During the 2014 CLEPa-thons, the education office tested more than 1,400 individuals, contributing to 650 Airmen earning their CCAF degrees.

To help prepare for the exams, academic advisers from University of Maryland University College Europe will be hosting study sessions prior to the event.

New curriculum comes to NCOA

T

he Kisling Noncommissioned Officer Academy at Kapaun Air Station is working toward switching to a new curriculum called the Intermediate Leadership Experience expected to begin in early 2016.

The ILE will replace the Legacy Class and is a blended learning experience that consists of two parts: an online class called Course 15 followed by an in-residence course.

Once a staff or technical sergeant has reached seven years of service in the Air Force, they have one year to complete Course 15 before the NCO can be considered for the in-residence portion, promotion or re-enlistment.

Tech. Sgt. Mark Bergmann, Kisling NCOA director of operations, takes every opportunity to educate the NCOs with whom he meets

about the course. He asks if they are aware that without the course completion, they could be ineligible for promotion and re-enlistment. Most of the Airmen he talks to are shocked by this information.

“That’s the important piece,” Bergmann said. “The prep work has to be completed; otherwise it’s going to hold them back. People who want to be proactive with their careers and want to have a career, have to get the Course 15 completed.”

With the course completed, NCOs with eight to 12 years of service will be eligible to attend the in-residence portion. From here they will be able to use what they learned in the prep course and apply it to practical situations.

The course not only prepares an NCO for the in-residence portion of the curriculum, but it also gives the student nine credit hours toward their Community College of the Air Force degree.

BEF releases drinking water quality report

One difference from the Legacy Class is that the ILE curriculum ensures the experiences and information learned through NCOA are provided to NCOs at the earliest possible time.

“This is a very exciting course,” said Senior Master Sgt. Dan Kenemore, Kisling NCOA director of education.

“We’ve been getting surveys for years that people wished they had this information earlier in their career. This guidance gives us the capability to deliver these tools earlier, so it’s a return on investment for our NCO corps.”

Providing Airmen with leadership skills earlier in their career wasn't the only reason for a switch to a new curriculum; it was also to keep from being left behind.

“The next generations in a society are always evolving,” Bergmann said.

“We look at the way people like to learn, and this course is one of those things that we’re doing to stay with, or

ahead of, the learning curve. We want to deliver the material the way people want to hear it.”

The ILE course is still in the testing phase, but according to Kenemore, the results so far have been positive.

“Both staff and students who have been going through the course, even people who were reluctant of change, have come out the course and say this is a good thing,” Kenemore said. “It’s hard; it’s different; but it takes a lot of those critical thinking skills that you need to be a leader in our Air Force today. This course is going to give the feedback needed to make better NCOs, better supervisors and better leaders in the Air Force.”

Medical Group changes command

by 86th Medical Group Bioenvironmental Engineering Flight The 86th Medical Group’s Bioenvironmental Engineering Flight recently released Ramstein’s Annual Drinking Water Quality Report. This report, which is required by Air Force Instruction and mirrors the Consumer Confidence Report required by the Environmental Protection Agency Continental United States, is designed to inform people about the excellent water and services that were delivered over the past year.

The goal is to provide everyone with a safe, high quality and reliable drinking water supply. The 86th MDG is continually striving to improve its services and protect its vital community water resources.

The 786th Civil Engineer Squadron Water Plant and Exterior Utility sections operate and maintain the KMC water distribution equipment and systems. CES personnel work 24/7 to ensure the system is pressurized and maintains sufficient chlorine residual. CES personnel conduct daily operational monitoring to maintain the high quality of their final product ― our drinking water.

Since Nov. 1, 2007, the two Vogelweh systems, including Kapaun Air Station, have combined and are supplied by the City of Kaiserslautern water provider, Stadtwerke Kaisers-lautern.

The 86th MDG BEF routinely monitors water quality throughout the systems. Each week BEF tests chlorine and pH levels and collects water samples for bacteriological and chemical analysis.

All routine monitoring requirements are conducted in accordance with the Final Governing Standards for Germany.

Make a tasty casserole!

Hello friends of good cooking and eating!

Today we will make a tasty casserole with cauliflower, noodles and ground meat.

What we need: Cauliflower, noodles, ground meat, salt, ground white pepper, sugar, butter, oil, lemon juice, grated cheese, a small onion, four eggs and a little jar of liquid cream.

First of all, cut the cauliflower in small pieces. Heat up water with salt, ground white pepper and some sugar. Also add a teaspoon of butter and a sip of lemon juice. When the water is boiling, put the cauliflower in it and cook it until it is almost done. Put the cauliflower in ice water to stop the cooking process.

After cooling it down, put the cold cauliflower in a strainer to dry it.

Don’t waste the cauliflower water. We will use that next week for a delicious cauliflower cream soup. To preserve it, fill the water into a jar and let it cool down. Then put it in the freezer to keep it fresh for next week.

Meanwhile we boil the noodles in salted water until they are almost done. Then put the noodles into a strainer and cool them down with cold water.

Now take your casserole dish, put a small piece of butter in it to prevent it from sticking.

Then put the cooked cauliflower in the casserole, the noodles next and the ground meat on top of it. Scramble four eggs and a little jar of liquid cream with salt and white pepper. Pour it over all the ingredients. At last, put the grated cheese on top.

Your oven should be heated to 180 degrees celsius. Put the casserole in it for 40 to 50 minutes, until all the liquid disappears and there’s a nice cheesy crust on top.

If you like, you can serve it with a bit of lettuce, tomatoe and cucumber salad.

7th CSC Civil Affairs, Danish CMIC team build interoperability Story and photo by Sgt. 1st Class Matthew Chlosta 7th Civil Support Command

n challenging conditions near the North Sea on the west coast of Denmark with spitting rain and bone-chilling winds, 7th Civil Support Command Soldiers trained together with Danish army’s Civil Military Cooperation support team.

The training was part of the Danish army’s 2nd Armored Infantry Battalion’s NATO Response Force validation and training exercise, Brave Lion 15, June 8 to 19.

“Our mission here is to integrate with the Danish CIMIC team,” said U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Jerome Smith, Civil Affairs NCO with Company B, 457th Civil Affairs Battalion, 361st Civil Affairs Brigade, 7th CSC. The units were able to interact and share their best practices.

“The CA team we have been working with here is very experienced,” said Danish army Sgt. 1st Class

The goal of CA and CIMIC is to inform the civilian population about what is going on and to help generate support for military operations during a war or disaster response, Jensen said.

The information gathered when meeting with the locals

is better when the teams prepare thoroughly, Jensen said.

This also helps shorten the time for sending their reports to leadership so they can understand how the local people are reacting, he added.

“This has been pretty interesting,” said U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Mark Korte, CA NCO with Company B, 457th CA Bn., 361st CA Bde. “We go

out to the different civilians and interact.”

The fully-integrated combined CA and CIMIC team met with the real-life mayor of a town near the training site to discuss the real world impacts Brave Lion 15 has on the local population.

“We’re interacting with real leadership,” Korte said.

“This is great training for us.”

The key buzzword and goal during the final three days of training was “interoperability.”

“It has been a fantastic opportunity for the U.S. and Danish soldiers to work together,” said Danish army Maj. Klaus Bomgaard, deputy chief of operations, 1st Brigade.

Joint exercises are essential to interoperability, he said. It is too late to begin coordinating when a war or incident happens, he added.

“It is the final certification for Denmark’s high readiness battle group, (the) 2nd Armored Infantry Battalion, Dragoon Armored Regiment,” Bomgaard said.

The Danish army’s 2nd

Armored Inf. Bn. will go on a “high readiness” status as part of the NATO Response Force July 15 for six months, he said.

Danish army Maj. Gen. Hans Christian Mathiesen, chief of the Danish army staff, also met with Soldiers and observed training during Brave Lion 15. He echoed those sentiments.

“Interoperability is key for us,” Mathiesen said.

The exercise is a good opportunity for NATO and the U.S. Army Europe to build trust and confidence to work together, Mathiesen added.

“It’s all about the readiness state of NATO,” he said.

Besides the 7th CSC, several other U.S. Army units that participated in Brave Lion 15,including: the 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s 30th Medical Brigade and 16th Sustainment Brigade; the 2nd Cavalry Regiment; the 3rd Infantry Division and the U.S. Air Force.

“For me it is an amazing experience,” Korte said. “It is putting us in situations where everything is real.”

US Army Europe on display at Rheinland-Pfalz Tag

by Staff Sgt. Rick Scavetta 221st Public Affairs Detachment German visitors checking out a U.S. Army medical triage display at the Rheinland-Pfalz Tag state fair were surprised to hear Americans speaking their language.

As they ratcheted tourniquets onto a wounded training dummy, Capt. Tiffany Schnakenberg, a U.S. Army Reserve Soldier from the Medical Support Unit-Europe, explained how many Reserve Soldiers live and work in Europe, and have married local people.

“It helps that we’ve learned their language,” Schnakenberg said.

A Texas native, Schnakenberg taught herself German, lives in northern Germany and is married to a German citizen.

“It also helps that we are very interactive and we have cool stuff. They don’t often see things like this,” she said.

Soldiers from the U.S. Army Reserve’s 7th Civil Support Command and several active-duty units from the 21st Theater Sustainment Command took part in the fair.

Neon orange hazardous material suits attracted passersby into the 773rd Civil Support Team tent, where Staff Sgt. Shawn McKenna explained how Soldiers in his unit are experts in reacting to chemi-

cal, biological and radiological incidents.

“It’s a great chance for us to explain what we can do for the Army and for the local government,” said McKenna, 32, of Maine, a member of the 773rd CST. “While we are explaining this to the local national visitors, we’ve also had American military members ask because they don’t know what it is that we do.”

Nearby, a German boy clutched a helium-filled balloon as Pfc. Zachary Cobbs, 25, of Watsonville, California, hoisted the youngster into the cab of the truck he drives for the Kaiserslautern-based, 66th Transportation Company. Crowds cheered as Soldiers and K-9 working dogs from the 18th Military Police Brigade displayed their ability to apprehend suspects.

Parachute riggers from the Rhine Ordnance Barracks-based 5th Quartermaster Company helped German visitors try on parachutes and showed them how they pack parachutes for dropping heavy gear and vehicles during airborne drops. Soldiers from the Miesau-based 212th Combat Support Hospital displayed their medical capabilities. Also on hand were Soldiers from the 39th Transportation Battalion, 16th Sustainment Brigade.

Senior leaders also visited the U.S. Army Europe Soldiers at the fair. U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Duane A. Gamble, commander of the 21st TSC, and Lt. Gen. Noel T. “Tom” Jones, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa vice commander and Kaiserslautern Military Community commander,

Also on display were vehicles and equipment from the U.S. Air Force and German military units stationed in Rheinland-Pfalz.

The three-day fair began June 26 in the village of Ramstein-Miesenbach. Along the roadsides, local organizations set up booths and presentations, to include nearby industry, environmental efforts and tourist spots. Traditional German food and drinks were sold at stalls throughout the town. Several stages had live music and dancing. This year, Ramstein is also celebrating its 800th anniversary.

WTB-E consolidation refines access to care for Warriors in Transition

by Ed Drohan Europe Regional Medical Command Public Affairs SEMBACH, Germany ― The Warrior Transition Battalion-Europe will consolidate its operations to a single location to facilitate access to warrior care and transition services for wounded, ill or injured Soldiers.

Changes are set to take place in phases over the next year with all operations consolidated in the KMC by June 2016.

The battalion’s headquarters and A Company are currently located at Kleber Kaserne in the KMC, while B Company is located at Vilseck in Bavaria. Platoons under each company are located at Baumholder, Stuttgart, Katterbach and Wiesbaden, and Vicenza, Italy.

WTB-E provides mission command and administrative support to Soldiers requiring complex care, and coordinates and synchronizes care, treatment and services for those Soldiers.

The ultimate goal is to help ensure a smooth transition for Soldiers, either as they return to duty or return to their civilian communities.

With the drawdown of the conflicts in Iraq and

Afghanistan, the number of Soldiers in the WTB-E is dwindling, according to Lt. Col. Lawrence Burns, WTB-E commander.

In the last year, the number of Soldiers in Transition assigned to the WTB-E has dropped from more than 200 to about 100. That population is projected to drop to about 50 by the end of the summer.

The proximity to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, the largest military hospital outside the United States, made the KMC an obvious choice for the unit’s consolidated location.

“This will give our Warriors in Transition consistent access to more diverse options of care and services,” Burns said. “We are here to empower Soldiers and their families to succeed during and after their transition, and this will help us to do just that.”

Landstuhl has almost every primary and specialty care service available that Soldiers in Transition need and more transition services are available in the KMC than in many other garrisons.

Many Soldiers in Transition at outlying locations had to travel great distances to receive care at LRMC, increasing the risk factors associated with receiving

their needed care.

“I’d rather have the Soldier here than on the road for four hours so they can get the services they need,” Burns said. “This also means more stability and less time away from families.”

Other benefits of consolidating WTB-E operations in the KMC include improved command and control for the unit, which leads to better care for patients and reduced costs.

“Soldiers currently in the Warrior Care and Transition Program in areas outside the KMC whose transition will not be completed before the consolidation takes effect, will be offered a permanent change of station move to an enduring Warrior Transition Unit in the U.S,” Burns said.

“Or, if they prefer, they can be moved to the KMC to continue their transition.”

The already established Warrior Care Transition Program nomination process for USAREUR will remain unchanged. However, Soldiers from areas outside the KMC who are approved for entry into the WCTP after June 1 will be assigned to an enduring WTU location in the U.S. or the KMC. Gamble thanked his predecessor and recommitted the command to a vibrant enabling role in a “Strong Europe.”

“Maj. Gen. O’Connor’s leadership and vision were instrumental to (TSC) efforts, and I am privileged to be following such a great leader, logistician and gentleman,” Gamble said.

“Readiness is the reason we exist,” he added.

“Ref lexive competence in your duties, your commitment and your character have made operational logistics a competitive advantage for our Army in Europe and Africa. Together we will sustain the gains you’ve made; we will continue to sense changes in our operating environment; and we will provide anticipatory sustainment. Together we will fulfill the unarticulated requirement.”

The new commanding general served as assistant deputy chief of staff for the

Department of the Army Logistics staff at the Pentagon prior to assuming command of the TSC. A battle-tested combat leader who served in Operations Enduring Freedom, New Dawn, Iraqi Freedom, Desert Shield and Desert Storm, Gamble joined the Army in 1985.

Medieval fest takes place at Falkenstein Castle

alkenstein Castle will be the stage for a medieval spectacle Saturday and Sunday. The castle ruins located high above Falkenstein village are considered one of the most impressive castle ruins in the northern Palatinate region.

The event will feature a knights camp, a medieval market, jugglers and musicians.

The medieval market will include craftsmen such as blacksmiths, turners, potters, glassblowers, stonemasons and painters showing off their craftsmanship arts.

Vendors will sell merchandise from the Middle Ages such as clothes, leather items, weapons, jewelry, arts, spices and herbs.

Musicians will play historical instruments and dance groups will be there to perform. Jugglers will also be there to entertain the audience, show off their acrobatic skills and present a fire show.

Children can listen to fairy tales, try archery, make wooden swords and participate in skill games.

Admission fee is €6 for adults and €2 for children.

Students and visitors who come in medieval costumes pay €4. Children shorter than a sword are free. A two-day ticket costs €10.

A shuttle bus will take passengers through the scenic valley of Falkenstein coming from direction Winnweiler

and Imsbach. Parking spots can be found on the meadows of Wambacher Hof. The medieval fest will be open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Spesbach highlights 800th anniversary with medieval market, parade

by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Spesbach and Elschbacherhof, village parts within HĂźtschenhausen, will celebrate their 800th anniversary with various events today through Sunday. “Spesbach and Elschbacher Hof were officially documented in 1215 for the first time,â€? said Ralf Lessmeister, mayor of Spesbach. “We cannot imagine how our founding fathers lived in the early Middle Ages, with many crises, famines, wars and crusades. Neither the plague nor the 30-Year War prevented the development of our community, and that’s what we would like to celebrate this year.â€?

A historical display will take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. today, Saturday and Sunday in the Catholic parish home. Original pictures from around the 1890s to today will reflect the local school life, church life, social and cultural events, agriculture and sceneries.

A party with disc jockeys presenting the top hits over the past five years is scheduled to start at 9 p.m. today in Mehrzweckhalle, the village’s community hall.

Street theater festival takes place July 17 to 19

by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs After eight successful years of the unique street theater festival called “Alles muss raus!”, or “Get it all out!”, the stage is set for the ninth year July 17 to 19 in Kaiserslautern’s city center.

The Lebenshilfe Kaiserslautern, an association for mentally disabled persons, will sponsor the event in cooperation with Lebenshilfe Arts and Culture, the City of Kaiserslautern and the Rheinland-Pfalz Culture Summer.

More than 20 ensembles will perform in the streets and on squares in Kaiserslautern. About 200 disabled and non-disabled artists and musicians from Germany, Belgium, France,

Great Britain, Spain and Switzerland will meet and celebrate a three-day long fest.

The festival will officially open with a revue at 7:30 p.m. July 17 in Fruchthalle, Kaiserslautern’s concert hall. The revue featuring a funny show and music performances is the only event asking for an admission fee of €5. All other performances are free.

Other performances on the first day will include Tango Sumo dance company presenting various types of dances from slow to fast at 7:30 p.m. on Stiftsplatz. At 9:30 p.m., the formation Mobile Homme from France will act like a human mobile being taken up into the air.

On July 18, presentations will begin at noon with the legendary orchestra Angklung performing on the stage near Stiftskirche and playing music on instruments made of bamboo.

Until 11 p.m., various groups will present dances, music, clownery, acrobatics, fire artistics, fantastic costumes and unique activities.

Mannie’s travels: Interlaken Express Story and photo by Mannie Daly Rheinland-Pfalz Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation summer intern On June 27, I traveled with Army Outdoor Recreation to Interlaken on their Interlaken Express trip. Interlaken is the most incredible, picturesque place I have ever had the privilege of visiting. Reality blew all of my expectations out of the water.

I first made my way to Lauterbrunnen, a quaint town just 30 minutes by train from Interlaken. Mountains surround this small town in all directions, resulting in a stunning view from every direction. I had read online that Lauterbrunnen was home to 72 waterfalls, so I had to see it for myself. The walk to Trümmelbach Falls was about 40 minutes and was absolutely breathtaking. As it turns out, Trümmelbach Falls are the most accessible glacier falls in the world, with a lift,

tunnels and paved paths running through them. Viewing platforms give visitors an upclose look at the falls from various viewpoints.

A few hours later, following the falls and a delicious lunch in Lauterbrunnen, I was back in nearby Interlaken.

Hiking was an absolute must for me. Luckily, there is an abundance of hiking and walking trails in Interlaken.

I headed off on the “Harder Kulm” trail, fairly wellknown among tourists. If you are looking to take on the trail, I would suggest putting 2.5 hours aside for each way.

While the hike is challenging, the view from the top makes it well worth it. The view from Harder Kulm, the top of Interlaken, features Lake Brienz on one side and Lake Thun on the other. A bridge extends out of the side of the mountain and is no doubt the best place to snap pictures and relish the breathtaking landscape.

A small restaurant at the peak of the mountain offers food, drinks, ice cream and more. Picnic benches and lounge chairs offer hikers a place to sit back and relax following the hike. I took in the view from the top for nearly an hour before heading back down. While the hike up was rewarding, I chose to take the funicular down. For €15, the funicular takes you from the top to the bottom in just five minutes.

I spent my last two hours having dinner and exploring the quaint streets of Interlaken. The city center is fairly small and very walkable.

While I chose hiking as my main activity for the day, Interlaken is also known for their extreme sport activities. Visitors have the option of paragliding, hang gliding, skydiving, canyoning, white water rafting and more. While I did not partake in any of

these activities, I heard nothing but great things from fellow trip-goers. Some lessextreme sports include a ropes course and kayaking.

Next time around I will definitely take advantage of one of these activities. The variety of both extreme sports and leisure activities guarantees something for everyone. Even if you are not looking to participate in extreme sports, a simple, scenic walk is guaranteed to impress. I am beyond thrilled to be heading back to Switzerland next weekend on another Outdoor Recreation trip.
