RAB announces changes to civilian retiree access: What to expect

86th

The Department of Defense will no longer issue identification cards to DOD civilian retirees and the previously issued cards will no longer be accepted for installation access Aug. 31.

This installation access update is in accordance with the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness Memorandum, “Department of Defense Civilian Retiree Identification Card Termination,” dated Feb. 17.

DOD civilian retirees will still have access to Morale, Welfare and Recreation services on Ramstein AB, but must contact the Long-Term Pass Office at 86sfs. lns@us.af.mil to obtain an installation pass.

When requesting access, DOD civilian retirees will be required to submit the fol -

lowing items:

• Base access request form, AE Form 190-16A (formerly Form 79), which will be provided by the Long-Term Pass Office upon request.

• A copy of their Civilian Retirement SF-50

• A valid unexpired passport

Once all necessary documents and verifications are complete passes may be

issued to eligible DOD civilian retirees for up to one year.

“The termination of the DOD civilian retiree ID card does not affect entitlements authorized by the installation commander or add new restrictions impacting civilian retirees,” said Annette Davenport, 786th Force Support Squadron chief of customer support. “The change in procedures is solely based on advancements in installation physical access control systems and the implementation of the REAL ID Act.”

This change will not impact U.S. military retirees.

“We understand that civilian retirees have developed strong ties to the base and its offerings over the years,” said U.S. Air Force Col. James Cunningham, 86th Mission Support Group commander. “The process has changed, but our commitment to them has not.”

Top 10 tid-bits for housing residents

The KMC Housing Office is dedicated to assisting you with friendly reminders to help with your home responsibilities. Remember, the key is not waiting until there is an issue to do something—observation/preventive measures will go a long way when it comes to the elimination of minor issues that could turn into larger ones.

These tid-bits should assist you with caring for your home, whether you are on or off-base.

On-base

1. Remember not to hang anything from your home ceilings.

2. Please consider using the Self-Help Store at Ramstein and Vogelweh to ensure/ maintain the quality and safety of your home.

3. If you have any issues within your residence that is beyond self-help, please call Family Housing Maintenance at 06371-4639510. As residents, you are responsible for the cleanliness and everyday maintenance of your home to include changing light bulbs, replacing sink stoppers or shower hoses, cleaning stove burners and basic pest control.

4. Remember to trim your trees and bushes to a height of 6ft. Keep your lawns mowed and presentable. If you see something, say something. Help make our community better.

Bonus on and off-base

5. Ventilate your home daily for a minimum of twice a day for 20-30 minutes. Ventilating your home by opening windows helps prevent household mold. Cross ventilation is necessary, so interior doors must be opened along with windows on opposing sides.

Off-base

6. Are you experiencing home maintenance challenges? You should immediately talk with your Landlord or call the KMC Housing Referral Office. Contact DSN 489-6643/COMM 0631-536-6643.

7. We recommend that you perform (monthly) inspections of your home for routine maintenance issues. If any maintenance conditions do exist, immediately bring them to the attention of your Landlord for repair/resolution.

8. Respect the off-base housing rules. Remember, German laws take precedence over U.S. laws while living in Germany.

9. If you have ceiling fans in your home, you should change the rotation of your ceiling fans twice a year to increase energy efficiency, putting less strain on your heating and cooling systems. In the summer, set the fans to rotate counterclockwise. This method of blade rotation will push the air down which creates a cool breeze.

10. If you need more information, or have questions/concerns with regards to maintenance in your home, please contact the 86 CES Housing Flight Sections listed below:

STATE OF THE ART: Bayern

State of the Art is a series introducing Germany as a whole, but also highlighting an individual state or “Bundesland” every month.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, both East and West Germany reunited in 1990. The Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) included 11 states and Berlin, in its geographically isolated location. The German Democratic Republic (East Germany) was comprised of five states and today’s Germany has a total of 16 “Bundesländer.”

This month our journey will lead us to Bavaria with its two sections Bayern and Franken.

Bavaria officially named “Freistaat Bayern” (Free State of Bavaria) is Germany’s largest state with a size of 70,500 square kilometers and 13 million inhabitants. It basically consists of two sections with Bayern in the south and Franken (Franconia) in the north. Never, ever make the mistake of calling a Franconian a “Bayer” or you will find yourself in the “boiling hot water” of the Main River, which naturally divides the two in about the middle of the state.

Historically seen Franken belonged to Preussen (Kingdom of Prussia) from 1792 to 1806, while Bayern was a kingdom of its own from 1806 to 1918. Bavarians sometimes still refer to Franconians as “Prussians.” While both areas have a lot in common, there are cultural and geological differences.

The capital is Munich with its

Landtag (State Parliament). Markus

Söder of the Christian Socialist Union (CSU) is the Minister President of the state who has been in office since 2018 and is up for re-election in October this year.

Augsburg and the Fuggers

Our journey begins in the southern section and the Fugger City of Augsburg. With its 296,000 inhabitants it is the second largest city in the Bavarian section and the third largest in the whole state. It is one of Germany’s oldest cities founded by Romans in 12 B.C., and there is an array of varying architectural styles to be discovered within the city center including medieval guild houses. The city hall with its Golden Hall is from the Renaissance Age.

The wealthy merchant family Fugger brought prestige and fame to the city as a business metropolis in the 16th century and is said to have had close ties with the Medici family in Italy. The oldest social settlement in Europe is the Fuggerei, which was established by Jakob Fugger in 1521 for low-income families. He determined that the annual rent would always be one guilder for an apartment and about 150 people still reside there paying 88 cents Euro per year. The area, museum and church have become a popular tourist attraction.

The three Renaissance fountains in the city, the Perlach Turm (tower) and the three water towers, including the Grosse Wasserturm was built in 1416 and is the oldest of its kind in Germany. The “Altstadt” has a Mediterranean atmosphere and is free of cars and large department stores.

The narrow alleys only house small shops, cafés, tanner shops, jewelry stores and art galleries and are lined with shallow water canals which mark the historical importance of water in Augsburg. The city is also famous for its “Augsburger Puppenkiste” (puppet theater) and the characters became popular “celebrities” on German television as early as 1954. Oktoberfest in September

Further east we’ll soon reach Munich (München in German), the largest city with 1.4 million inhabitants. It is most famous for the world’s largest folk fest, the Oktoberfest, which draws up to six million visitors and 7.8 million liters of beer are sold per year. Prince Regent Ludwig of Bavaria, later king, married Princess Therese of Saxony and decided to celebrate in an unusual way with a horse race. The wedding ceremony was held October 12, 1810, and October 17 a large horse race for the populace took place in honor of the royal couple on the Theresienwiese (slang Wies’n) named after the bride.

It was so popular that the residents of Munich cried for more and after time the festival grew into an annual large folk festival with beer tents, rides and candy booths. There is a total of 17 large and 12 smaller tents. The largest is the Hofbräu Festhalle with a capacity of 10,000 people and experienced waitresses can carry up to ten Mass, equaling twenty kilos (one liter of beer weighs one kilo plus about the same weight of the glass) at one time. The first trans-

portable roller coaster, the “Olympia Looping” was set up in 1989. The festival always starts with the parade of the heavy brewery horses on the third Saturday in September when the Lord Mayor taps the keg shouting “O’zapft is!” Every tent is newly built with fresh timber each year and construction of the impressive structures starts in July. With a few breaks in between, the festival will take place for the 188th time this year from Sept.16 to Oct. 3.

Knights, chimes and breweries

Apart from the Oktoberfest, the city has a lot in store for visitors. Its Frauenkirche (Church of our Lady) with its twin towers rises high above the large pedestrian area near “Stachus” and “Karlstor” and is situated close to Marienplatz with the new City Hall built in Neo Gothic style. The clock built in 1908 has become a popular tourist attraction and at 11 a.m. and noon a door opens, a life-size knight with a lance pushes a competitor off his horse, coopers show a dance while the crowd cheers, enacting two historical scenes from the 16th century, and chimes set in. The Hofbräuhaus is located around the corner and Viktualienmarkt, a daily produce market established in 1807, is just across the square. The BMW automobile manufacturer has its home in Munich and there are a total of 19 breweries, each with its own “Brauereikeller” (brewery cellar).

Olympics, a Chinese tower and the alps

Munich was host to the Olympic Summer Games in 1972 and the

spacious park with the Olympic hall and stadium are now used for pop concerts and other large-scale events. Other attractions include “Schwabing” with great nightlife and student flair close to the university. The “Englischer Garten” is a spacious park that is 3.75 hectares larger than Central Park in New York and was established in 1789. It has a large beer garden with a Chinese Tower, small streams, a lake and 78 kilometers of walkways and riding paths. Munich has several art museums, two castles and a futuristic sports arena with changing colors. There are beaches along the Isar River and numerous bustling beer gardens in the summer. To literally (snow) top it off, the Alps are located 264 kilometers further south, but under a special weather condition called “Föhn” you can enjoy an ice clear view of the mountains and Zugspitze, Germany’s highest peak, from the city.

Castles and a crazy king

There are soft rolling hills to the south that eventually lead to the Alpine region, including well known Garmisch and Berchtesgaden, as well as Bad Reichenhall with its salt mines. You will discover several lakes including Starnberger See, where infamous King Ludwig II, builder of Neuschwanstein, Linderhof and Herrenchiemsee Castles, was found drowned in the shallow water under mysterious circumstances in June 1886. It is said that he was mentally ill and highly indebted the kingdom with his outrageous construction projects. Other places of interest include Königsee, a lake high in the moun-

tains, ski resorts and Chiemsee to the West, while the Holocaust Memorial Site Dachau is located north of Munich. Rosenheim is a quaint city worth a visit, Regensburg along the Regen and Danube Rivers to the north-east has a fabulous Medieval city center with a humungous Greek style “Wallhalla” hall nearby on a hilltop, also commissioned by Ludwig II. Passau lies across the border to Austria and is a popular starting point for exciting Danube cruises. AUDI automobiles are built in Ingolstadt and the Bayerischer Wald is a forest with hiking trails and leisure vacation spots.

Middle age flair and a meteorite

Travelling north we will gradually reach the Main River and the RheinMain-Donau-Kanal that links the three rivers. Our journey will lead us to the Franken part of the state, with another large wine growing region in Germany, cozy towns and a number of places of interest.

The town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber is one of the best-preserved Middle Age towns in Germany with a complete city wall surrounding it, various well-kept buildings, small shops and a “torture museum,” historically interesting, but not recommended for highly sensitive individuals.

Nördlingen is rather spectacular and was founded in the year 898, constructed in the crater of a meteorite that hit about 15 million years ago. The crater has a diameter of 23 kilometers and the city was constructed in a circular shape at the pit, surrounded by a well-preserved wall and a small chain of hills around the

perimeter. It has a picturesque old town and is worth a stop on your way to Nürnberg.

There are several U.S. Army units, such as Vilseck and Ansbach, while Grafenwöhr is used as a training site for the military. Many a baby born of U.S. military families came into the world in the former hospital in Fürth in the 1950’s to 1970’s.

Franken at its best Nuremberg (Nürnberg) is the capital of the Franken region and the second largest city in the whole state with 500,000 inhabitants. It was first mentioned in the year 1050 and quickly became a business metropolis in the 12th century.

It is famed for its Christmas Market on the main market square as well as the Imperial Nürnberg Castle, towering high above the city. Heavily destructed during World War II, many of the ancient buildings, including several churches, have been reconstructed to regain its original cozy atmosphere with narrow alleys, small pubs and semi-timbered facades. The Golden Fountain and the Gothic Church of our Lady are further attractions. Visitors can visit the large underground tunnel system or tour the medieval prison located under the old town hall. Another historic location is the Documentation Center Rally Grounds with the Zeppelin Field used during the Third Reich. Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528), Germany’s most famous painter, lived in a town house in 1509. As one of the few buildings not damaged, it now houses an art museum where visitors are guided by Dürer’s

“wife” Maria during their tour. Lakes and reservoirs with beaches or café gardens nearby offer relaxation and thermal spas welcome guests.

Operas and Porcelain

Further north, we’ll come across the small town of Bamberg which has a picturesque old town and a surprisingly vivid atmosphere with 16 percent of its inhabitants being university students. Würzburg, a former residential city has a castle and a lovely old town section. The Richard-WagnerFestspiele is an Opera Festival held in Bayreuth every year, dedicated to the last ten operas composed by Wagner. King Ludwig II was a devoted fan and had an opera hall constructed within Neuschwanstein Castle in his honor, but a performance never took place.

The “Deutsche Porzellan Strasse” (German Porcelain Road) lies in the top north-east corner. The road will lead us to the small town of Selb, where fine porcelain lovers may know the brands Hutschenreuther, Heinrich and Rosenthal, all fabricated in the town only four kilometers to the Czech border. Rosenthal also produced porcelain parts for electrical lines in Landstuhl until 1991.

With the proximity to the former Eastern Bloc, Selb was also home to one of the largest refugee camps, mainly for women and children fleeing the Soviet invasion of former German territories, now in Poland, towards the end of World War II and just happens to be the birthplace of the author of this article.

A village divided

Speaking of difficult times, the

tiny village of Mödlareuth with merely 50 inhabitants, belonging to Thüringen in the north and Bavaria in the south, became victim of separation from 1949 until 1990. First a barb-wired fence was built in the middle of the small stream that divided the village but allowed the residents to go back and forth. Later it was replaced by a high wall separating the two. Taking a ten kilometer detour into account via the border patrol point, West Germans could visit their East German relatives across the steam. East Germans, on the other hand, would have to obtain a written permit in Plauen in Thüringen and travel about three hours in one direction to visit their family, turning this venture into an odyssey. The village has developed into an open-air museum with original sections of the wall and a surveillance tower. It greets its visitors with a historic movie about the events leading up to the separation, while a few former East German border guards lead guests through the premises. An absolute must-see location for those interested in post-war history. https:// www.moedlareuth.de/en

Listening in

Our journey around the state will end at Hof near the junction where West Germany, East Germany and (former) Czechoslovakia met during the Cold War period. In January 1955 the Air Force Security Service Command moved Det. 6, 6915th

Radio Squadron from Landsberg near Munich to Kingsley Kaserne in the city of Hof. The small city was located merely five kilometers to the East German border and therefore this U.S. installation is said to be the closest ever to the Iron Curtain. After a number of organizational changes, the Kaserne was transferred from the U.S. Army to Air Force and renamed Hof Air Station.

During the Cold war era, language talented Air Force members were taught Russian or Czech and then moved on to Germany to be stationed at Hof Air Station. Many of them worked in shifts at the reconnaissance unit in nearby Döbraberg and intercepted Soviet radio messages. In 1971 the 6915th Security Group was de-activated, and the base was turned over to the German air force, and is still active there today. Former members stationed with the unit have grouped together as the Hof Reunion Association, have held several reunions in Hof, with one planned this year in September, to remember the times they shared in Germany in the 1960’s.

Meanwhile Hof has developed into a lively business hub in the center of Germany with a quaint Franconian atmosphere and delicious Fränkische Bratwurst, a regional specialty not to be missed. It also serves as the gateway to more discoveries in Thüringen or in the Czech Republic and lies along the autobahn enroute to Germany’s capital Berlin.

Austin swears in new service members as DOD marks anniversary of All-Volunteer Force

It’s an oath that all members of the U.S. military know:

“I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. And I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same.”

For 85 young men and women at the Baltimore Military Entrance Processing Station, it was a bit more involved as they were sworn into service by Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III.

Austin, who spent 41 years in the Army, used the occasion to mark the 50th anniversary of the start of America’s all-volunteer military. He also took the time to meet the newest members and welcome them “to the greatest team in the world.”

Many of those swearing into service also shipped today. They arrived at the processing station at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland, were sworn in and will find themselves at Fort Moore, Georgia; Parris Island, South Carolina; or Great Lakes, Illinois, by the end of the day.

“This is a big day for the young people standing in front of me,” Austin said. “You’ve arrived here as individuals, but you’re going to leave here as part of a team.”

They are also the latest members of the all-volunteer force.

“Fifty years ago this week, the United States stopped drafting citizens into service and turned instead to an all-volunteer force,” Austin said. “Ever since then, Americans like you have joined our military, out of conviction and not out of compulsion.”

Beginning in 1940, the Selective Service — the Draft — manned the military and provided the forces needed for World War II,

the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Cold War.

“Shifting over to an all-volunteer force, was a pretty bold step,” the secretary said. “No other military with such formidable capabilities operated on a volunteer basis. But the whole world has seen the results.”

Austin joined the Army in 1975. “And I’ve watched over the decades, as the U.S. military has grown into the outstanding and incredibly professional fighting force that it is today,” he said. “America’s all-volunteer force is the strongest military in human history. And the power of today’s military is a testament to every

American patriot who freely volunteers to keep our republic safe.”

The new service members are now part of something much bigger that just themselves. “We rely on you, our democracy relies on you, and your country relies on you,” Austin said.

In the armed forces, the new service members will find opportunities to grow and to lead, he said. “You’ll work hard. You’ll learn new skills and you’ll put them to use at home and abroad,” the secretary said. “And you’ll learn that success is a team sport. You will stand proud alongside outstanding teammates from all walks of life. And you will work, train and fight together as soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines and guardians.”

Austin said the department has a sacred obligation to take care of those volunteers as well as their families. “We commit ourselves to take care of you just as you are committing yourselves to take care of all of us,” he said.

Breaking the silence:

TSgt Paul Vermaire’s journey with mental health recovery

Mental health had always been a familiar topic for U.S. Air Force Tech Sgt. Paul Vermaire, 86th Operations Support Squadron aircraft controller. Growing up, he witnessed family members battling depression and suicide. Little did he know. Paul Vermaire’s life would be profoundly affected by his own struggles.

Paul Vermaire and his wife, Claire Vermaire, were eager to embrace their new life at Ramstein Air Base, Germany. From roaming through the vast amount of moving boxes scattered across their new home, to rounding up their excited son, Jonah, Paul Vermaire thought this frantic start was the cause for his brain fog.

After a couple days, what seemed like simple symptoms caused by stress cascaded into a nightmare situation.

Paul Vermaire’s cognitive abilities declined rapidly, leaving him unable to think or speak clearly. Paul Vermaire reached out to his wife for help, alarmed by his deteriorating condition uttering only two words amidst his struggle: “Mental health.”

“He was admitted to the hospital on Friday due to an unknown mass in his brain,” said Claire Vermaire. “On Saturday, he started to have excruciating pain from the abscess swelling and pressing against his

brain. Then, he went into brain surgery on Sunday.”

While the successful surgery brought a sense of relief, it marked the beginning of a difficult journey for the Vermaire family..

Paul and Claire Vermaire thought he would recover quickly, yet his cognitive health was still severely weakened. He was later transferred to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

The Vermaires spent five months living in a hotel room with only two suitcases of belongings. The chaotic environment put an incredible strain on not only Paul Vermaire’s recovery process but also on Claire Vermaire’s life.

“I was sick,” said Paul Vermaire. “I couldn’t think, I couldn’t speak, Claire had to help finish my sentences, I was in a child state of mind where I couldn’t contribute, adding to the challenges my family faced.”

“I had to be happy and cheerful for our son Jonah while trying to take care of everything but it was hard,”

Claire Vermaire added “It was a very difficult time.”

Dealing with Paul Vermaire’s recovery and being stuck in the hotel due to Covid-19, the family was reaching a breaking point. But, then the military community rallied behind them.

Airmen and their families across

the Air Force were moved by their story. People pooled together resources to provide anything and everything that the Vermaire family needed to make their hotel room their new home away from home.

“My sister also started an online fundraiser and we got so many totes of clothing, tons of toys, and just so much stuff that we didn’t know what to do with it,” said Claire Vermaire. “The military community love … we couldn’t have done it without them.”

However, even with the extra support, Paul Vermaire was still struggling.

He experienced months of sleeplessness and battled severe mental health issues after tapering off the steroid medication used for his recovery. Returning to Ramstein, the Vermaires hoped for a fresh start. But, their situation only worsened.

“When I got back I couldn’t sleep for two to three days,” said Paul Vermaire. “I was already depressed and having suicidal thoughts. I just thought I couldn’t get out of it, and that’s when I called my first shirt. Actually I called everyone I knew because something was very wrong.”

Paul Vermaire hoped being prescribed medications and going through an out-patient therapy course would help with the suffering he went through, but they had no effect.

Claire Vermaire said she was at the point of no return. It seemed she and her husband were delving further into their horrible nightmare with no ending in sight.

“I basically told him I wanted to leave,” said Claire Vermaire. “I want to take our son and leave. Then he said that he wanted to kill himself and we just started bawling. We finally knew how bad it truly was and we needed help.”

Paul Vermaire’s doctor suggested electroconvulsive therapy, which creates an electrical induced seizure, in the hopes the treatment would help manage his severe depression.

While frightened by the idea of leaving his family for the treatment, Paul Vermaire was more afraid of the impact his depression would have on their lives.

“It took three or four treatments to see a change, and after a few more my therapist really saw a major change” Paul Vermaire said.

Claire Vermaire added, “We knew the ECT treatments were truly making a difference for him.”

Thankfully, the treatments proved successful, and allowed the family to reunite in Ramstein. Despite their return, the Vermaires knew their lives had been irreversibly transformed by their journey.

“As a more quiet and timid person, the experience has definitely opened me up to be more vocal,” said Paul Vermaire. “I really sympathize with people with mental health issues.”

Even now, Claire Vermaire struggles letting her husband complete his own sentences.

“I’m very much a type A personality and need to have a set schedule for everything,” Claire Vermaire said. “I learned to be patient, to adapt to new situations and to have more grace.”

Paul Vermaire’s experience ignited a newfound desire within himself to speak openly about mental health. Participating in the Warrior Games through the Wounded Warrior Program helped Paul Vermaire find solace among fellow warriors who shared their stories and struggles.

“It was amazing being around others who were so open about their mental health issues or their disabilities,” Paul Vermaire said. “That’s who I want to be. I wanted to be that open, to be that gracious, and I wanted others around Ramstein to know they can be open about it.”

In a world where silence often shrouds mental health, Paul Vermaire’s journey stands as a beacon of hope. Being open, understanding, and supportive, can end the stigma surrounding mental health and foster a community where everyone feels empowered to seek help.

Garrison employee’s exemplary service recognized with prestigious award

Many people have certain skillsets that influence and shape their career paths. For Jason Tudor, his unmatched leadership capabilities played a defining role in shaping his.

Mr. Tudor’s embodiment of

Installation Management Command’s Service Culture ethos and his outstanding performance led him to receive IMCOM’s Stalwart Award, an award that recognizes individuals who have demonstrated the highest standards of performance and contribute significantly to the success of the command. While receiving the award June 6, at the Gunter Hotel in San Antonio, Texas, Mr. Tudor couldn’t help but

reflect on the meaning of this award.

“Being a Stalwart recipient is an incredible privilege. The award acknowledges the exceptional teams I’ve had the privilege of working with,” said Tudor. “Together, we've accomplished significant work, constantly striving to innovate and move forward and this award is a culmination of that. Really, there should be a lot more names engraved on this award other than mine, so, I am excited to be representing many other IMCOM employees in this capacity.”

Stefan Alford, former chief of public affairs for USAG Rheinland-Pfalz lauded Mr. Tudor’s work ethic and resilience.

“Jason truly earned this Stalwart award. If one word could describe his work ethic, it’s fearless,” said Alford. “He seeks out the hard challenges and is the first to raise his hand for any opportunity to make a real difference for the garrison and the Army. He takes the jobs that nobody else wants and he absolutely crushes them.”

The man behind the award

Mr. Tudor has worn many hats at U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz before serving as the garrison’s current executive officer. Always pushing the envelope with his career, Mr. Tudor served as the operations officer for USAG Rheinland-Pfalz during DEFENDER Europe 21 at Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base, Romania, from April-May 2021.

From October 2020-January 2021, Mr. Tudor served as interim deputy

garrison manager for the Baumholder Military Community where he managed and oversaw the day-to-day garrison and tenant activity support operations for this vital NATO multi-mission site with more than 9,000 Soldiers. In February 2021, he returned to the public affairs office as the deputy public affairs officer before becoming the chief in 2022. Now, he keeps the garrison’s command team in order as the executive officer.

“The entire year was filled with amazing new opportunities, almost all of which required me to step outside of my regular scope of work,” said Tudor. “Each opportunity was an exciting experience that demanded both courage and openness to succeed.”

Though stepping out of one’s comfort zone is a balancing act, Mr. Tudor has graciously embraced every role he has been in.

“I did a bit of both [failing and succeeding], which kept things in balance for me. I have loved every minute of it, all the challenges, and even the failures - and this award certainly represents much of that for me. That said, the sun rises every morning, you get up, start again, and engage each day with new energy, a fresh perspective, and a passion to strive for success at whatever you’re doing.”

Gratitude and praise

Mr. Tudor is no stranger to accolades and awards. His newly earned Stalwart Award will have company on his shelf alongside the Army Civilian Service Commendation Medal, the Air

Force Meritorious Service Medal, as well as the Air Force Commendation Medal and Air Force Achievement Award.

Collecting these accolades was not a lonely road, for he has many people to thank for their support along the way.

“I owe my success to many people who supported me. My boss, Stefan Alford, played a significant role in my achievements,” commended Tudor. He goes on to say: “He encouraged me to explore new areas and supported me in my work. Stefan truly embodies the principle of putting people first. Also, my family, especially my wife Denise and my daughter, Annabelle, have been my rock and a driving force behind so much of what I do. Their understanding, support, and love allow me to pursue an Army career that takes all of us to exciting new places. Without their love and support, none of this would have been possible.”

“Knowing Jason, this award is not a culmination of his efforts, but rather validation of his continued resolve toward the next difficult task at hand,” said Alford. I always told Jason that I wished I could clone him, but he already does enough for three people. I honestly can’t think of anyone more deserving.”

Lt. Gen. Omar Jones, IMCOM commanding general, recognized Jason and the other award recipients with plaques at the Garrison Command Team Conference in San Antonio, Texas on June 6.

A kilometer of castle

Germany is rightly famous for its castles. But the one in Burghausen is a mustsee — both up close and from a distance. Why? For starters, the castle is more than a kilometer long (1,051 meters, to be exact), which makes for a fantastic photo opportunity when looking up at it from the beautiful medieval old town.

It’s also packed with history. The area in which the castle stands has been inhabited for thousands of years. The castle itself has been around for a millennium. Incredibly, it has escaped total destruction throughout its history, though it has been repaired and modernized on many occasions.

Visiting the castle is a very memorable experience (and one that is filled with plenty of worthy photo opportunities, too). Visitors can explore the castle walls, race across drawbridges, duck into cool old halls and cells, and wander through onsite museums and gift shops. As a bonus, the views from the castle are outstanding. Austria lies just on the other side of the Salzach River.

Four-season fun

Burghausen is a joy to visit during any season of the year. The old town is beautiful. It offers narrow cobblestone streets, Bavarian architecture, shops, restaurants, old churches, and a healthy dose of Bavarian food and drink (biergartens!).

Burghausen also feels a little bit like a secret destination. Five hundred years ago, the town (and area) was doing really, really well, thanks in large part to the economic benefits it reaped from a thriving salt

trade. Like most “good” things in medieval Europe, however, the town’s medieval prosperity came to an end because of war and a noble takeover of the salt trade. The town’s status was greatly diminished, but much beauty remained — like the castle, which is gold for today’s tourists.

In the summer, the town is excellent for swimmers. Lake Wöhrsee is incredible. Located just beneath the ridge that holds the castle, it is a perfect spot for picnickers, swimmers, and people who love to

take naps beneath shade trees. You can walk there from the old town. And when you glance up, you remember: the world’s longest castle is just above you.

In the winter, Burghausen is just a short drive from a number of prime skiing destinations in Austria (and even Italy, just a couple of hours over the Alps). Autumn and spring are gorgeous times to visit, as well.

Side trip central

Would you like to visit Munich,

Salzburg, and Berchtesgaden? Well, Burghausen is located an hour from all three places. In one long weekend, you can soak up all the goodness the town has to offer and some of the region’s most famous destinations.

Additionally, the Alps are so very close to Burghausen. If you’re itching to see the Austrian Alps, especially, on the eastern side of Salzburg (and you should, because they’re amazing), Burghausen will get you there quickly.

ABC IN KMC: Spaghetti ice-cream shapes culture

Have you ever enjoyed a spaghetti ice-cream with soft vanilla gelato in strings, topped with raspberry sauce, white chocolate shavings and a dab of whipped cream underneath on a hot sunny day?

We can enjoy this refreshing treat thanks to seventeen-yearold Italian Dario Fontanella, who worked in his father’s ice-cream parlor in Mannheim. On April 6, 1969, he had the coolest idea of his life when he served the first dish of his icy creation. Unfortunately, young Dario failed to put a patent on his sweet treat and it quickly became a popular refreshment throughout the nation.

As many others, Dario’s family immigrated to Germany in the 1950s when the nation experienced an economic boom along with a shortage of workers. In 1955 Italians were invited to work in Germany as “guest workers” upon German government initiative.

Further contracts were settled with Spain and Greece in 1960, Turkiye in 1961, Portugal in 1964 and (former) Yugoslavia in 1968. This brought about waves of immigrants and created a multinational culture including their favored dishes. In 1964 the Minister of the Interior personally welcomed one-millionth guest worker Armando Rodrigues from Portugal.

Italian gelato parlors and

pizzerias sprang up everywhere, Greek and Portuguese restaurants catered to hungry customers and a Turkish immigrant opened the first kiosk selling Döner Kebab in Berlin in the 1980’s.

Initially the mainly male guest workers were sought to work for a few years to then return to their home countries. However, scores of family members made their way to reunite, turning Germany into their permanent home.

Numerous Italians from Cortina d’Ampezzo, a small town in the Dolomitic Mountains in northern Italy, opened ice-cream parlors around the nation under the name “Cortina.” Restaurants called “Antalya,” “Kriti” or “Lisboa” are reminiscent of their home countries. The largest group of workers came from Turkiye in the 1980’s, developing into the largest community outside of the country with 101,000 Turks or descendants alone in Berlin.

The following decades brought immigrants from Asia and India, people from Mexico, South America and from African countries. Americans also contributed to shaping culinary culture with typical burger joints, hot dogs, fried chicken and Coca Cola after World War II.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, great numbers of East Germans swarmed to the west. In the early 1990’s about two million so-called “RussianGermans” returned to their roots from the former Soviet Union, bringing with them specialties

such as Soljanka, while another 1.2 million Poles and people of East European countries and their dishes found their way to German tables.

2016 brought a huge wave of refugees from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq to the country and yet again, with tasty recipes in their luggage. Over one million refugees from the Ukraine have found temporary homes in Germany since 2022, alone 5,000 in the Westpfalz region and 58,000 in Berlin.

According to a 2021 census people of 144 different nations live in and around Kaiserslautern. They have created a diverse melting pot of cultures in Germany throughout the ages.

Together with typical German and Palatinate specialties, they offer a colorful buffet of exotic, spicy, tasty, sweet, sour and delicious dishes in the region, including Guinness from Ireland or tarte flambée from the Alsace, but not to forget Dario’s infamous spaghetti ice-cream.

Are you getting hungry yet?
