Commemorating D-Day 78 — A salute to sacrifice

A C-130J Super Hercules aircraft, assigned to the 37th Airlift Squadron out of Ramstein Air Base, flies past Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy, France, June 2. 37 AS has a lineage that stems from squadrons that participated in the invasion of France by dropping troops and carrying gliders over Normandy in order to secure towns and bridges before the rest of the Allied Forces could storm the beaches during World War II. 78th Annual D-Day commemoration in Normandy, France, June 6. The 37th Airlift Squadron participated in multiple ceremonies and flyovers in remembrance of their predecessors who dropped

paratroopers over Normandy during Operation Overlord 78 years ago. “For me, it is incredibly important to be here,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Justin Pedone,

Detachment Commander for the 78th Commemoration of D-Day. “My great cousin was a C-47 Skytrain pilot and he dropped the first paratroopers over Northern France. To come out here and

D-DAY from Page 1 fought on both sides of World War II to remember the sacrifices made by all during the contest of Northern France. “Many of our partners and allies are here with us to remember this historic event,” said U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Christopher Donahue, 82nd Airborne Division commander. “I think it’s extremely important that our partners, and even our former enemies - now close allies, are here to remember the sacrifices made here in the name of freedom.” According to Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, U.S. Army General A. Mark Milley, the ideology that threatened the lives of the people of Western Europe 78 years ago is eerily similar to what we see in the world today. “It has been almost 80 years since the defeat of Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan and fascist Italy,” said Milley. “But, we are again seeing death and destruction on the European continent. While Kyiv may be 2,000 kilometers away from where we are today, they too are experiencing the same horrors the French people experienced in World War II at the hands of the Nazi invaders. The world has come together in the support of the Defense of Ukraine against a determined

invader. The fight for Ukraine is about honoring these veterans of World War II. It’s about the treaties that were established by the dead that are buried here at this cemetery.” Those treaties were born out of service members who, through their own grit and perseverance, liberated a continent from evil and changed history forever. “They gave us the world we live in today, which we still fight to keep free,” Pedone said. “We flew over Normandy American Cemetery and we were moved by the extreme sacrifice that was made here, and feel the weight of how many people we lost in the defense of freedom. It’s an honor

to be here to commemorate the sacrifices that were made and the people who not only saved the country, but the world.” The predecessor to today’s 37 AS dropped troops over Normandy before the landings began the liberation of the tyrannical rule of Europe. “We are experiencing and learning about a piece of our history,” Pedone said. “It’s interesting to see where our operations began and how they have change throughout the years. It really brings into perspective why we are here and develops a deeper appreciation of the sacrifices made by those brave individuals 78 years ago.”

East Gate closed / ROB-MC Gate opened Ramstein Air Base’s East Gate closed and the new Rhine Ordnance Barracks Medical Center (ROB-MC) Access Control Point (ACP) opened. The new ACP (or gate in Air Force speak) was built in preparation for the new medical center and will enable the anticipated increase in traffic once the medical center is fully operational. In the interim, as ROBMC is not due to open for several years, the new gate bolsters antiterrorism and force protection capabilities for the installation, enables smoother traffic flow off the L369 traffic circle, and provides your Defenders a more modern and safe work environment. The ROB-MC gate is located near the East Gate off the L369 traffic circle. If you have come onto the base through the East Gate in the last year, you may have driven through the new L369 circle. Once the gate opens there will be detour signs instructing drivers how to exit the L369 traffic circle and drive toward the ROB-MC ACP. When approaching the ACP please stay vigilant of traffic lights

that notify you of which lanes are open and when it’s safe to proceed forward. Just like the East Gate, the ROB-MC gate will be operational 24/7. Additionally, there will also be a new joint (Army/Air Force) Visitor Control Center (VCC), located just prior to the gate, which will open May 31. The ROB-MC VCC will provide the same visitor services as the current West Gate VCC and the Pulaski Installation Access Office, with operating hours of 6 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Short term visitor passes will be available Monday through Friday 6 a.m.-4 p.m. Long term DBIDS installation passes are available Monday through Thursday 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m., and Fridays from 8:30 a.m.noon. The ROB-MC VCC will be closed for all services on Federal Holidays. We are excited for the new project and ask for your patience. Please remain cautious while driving in this area during the transition as we the community adjust to the new traffic flow. Direct any questions to the 86th Security Forces Squadron at 480-6851 or 480-2050.

TALK OF THE TOWN: Union Community Otterbach-Otterberg by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Many members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community have found temporary or even permanent homes in one of the many villages and towns surrounding Kaiserslautern or in the heart of the Palatinate Forest. Talk of the Town is a series highlighting the union communities within the County of Kaiserslautern, the City of Kaiserslautern and the Union Community of Winnweiler in neighboring Donnersberg County. The series aims to inform American service members and their families about the communities they’re joining during their time in the KMC. A Union Community is an administrative territorial community composed of a group of individual towns or villages. Each month we will feature a different community and provide facts about its history, heritage, and the local experiences it offers. Our next stop will lead us to the Union Community of OtterbachOtterberg and we invite you to discover interesting and maybe notso-well-known facts about your home away from home. The formerly separate union communities of Otterbach and Otterberg were merged in a communal reform in 2014 and the city of Otterberg is the administrative seat. The current Union Community of Otterbach-Otterberg consists of the individual towns and villages of Frankelbach, Heiligenmoschel, Hirschhorn, Katzweiler, Mehlbach, Niederkirchen, Olsbrücken,

Otterbach-Sambach, Otterberg, Schallodenbach, Schneckenhausen und Sulzbachtal. The total union community has 20,000 inhabitants and about 300 American families also call it their home. A Game of Thrones Otterberg has an eventful history and in the year 1145 the Cistercians (a Catholic order of monks) founded an abbey in Otterberg. The Cistercians preferred building in river valleys or in swampy areas, and as a sign of their humility and purity they began with the construction of the monastery at the Otterbach (stream). The large monastic church, formerly part of the Cistercian monastery, was built between 1168 and 1254. The church is the most prominent landmark and is the largest sacral building in its original form in Rheinland-Pfalz, and is located right next to the Otterberg historic district. After the Protestant Reformation the monastery was abandoned and left to slowly decay. From 1159 to 1592 Otterberg belonged to Pfalz-Lautern (Imperial Lautern) and was then turned over as part of the Kurpfalz (Imperial Palatinate) at the end of the 18th century. From 1798 to 1814 it was part of the French Republic and was then handed over to the Austrian emperor. After World War II, in 1947, it was integrated into the newly formed State of Rheinland-Pfalz. Otterbach, on the other hand, with the town mainly situated along the Lauter River in the Lautertal, has a completely different history. In the Middle Ages the Cisterian monastery owned property as well as a grazing

authorization in Otterbach. Up until the end of the 18th century the community belonged to the Leyen family. Of note, from Nov. 28 - 30, 1793, the community was partially the scene of the Battle of Kaiserslautern against French troops, which was a battle of the War of the First Coalition, part of the French Revolutionary Wars. Otterberg – City of the Walloons with charm and tradition In the year 1579 Palatinate Count Johann Casimir allowed religious refugees from the Spanish Netherlands, exiled Calvinists referred to as Walloons, to settle on the premises of the abandoned monastery. In a decree he defined that certain parts of the monastery complex could be used to build new houses, while other sections were preserved such as the church, the chapter house, and the abbey house. Initially 400 individuals were settled in the refugee encampment, but the industrious community quickly grew and only two years later, in 1581, Otterberg was granted city rights with a population of 1,600. The Walloons, mainly from the French speaking part of Belgium, were proficient cloth makers and tanners, blacksmiths, carpenters and skilled craftsmen. Many buildings in the Altstadt were built by these skilled workers, such as the oldest house, the Ferkelsche Haus, which was built in 1606, the Alte Apotheke (pharmacy), which was built in 1608, and the Blaues Haus, which was built in 1612. Edifices built in the 17th and 18th centuries can still be found on the main street (Hauptstraße) today with

the Walloons and their craftsmanship playing a significant role in shaping the character of Otterberg. Isidor Straus and Macy’s Department Store Isidor Straus was born in Otterberg in 1845 and emigrated to the U.S. with his Jewish merchant family in 1853. The family settled in Talbotton, Georgia, where his father opened a store. In 1874 his father took over the porcelain part of H. R. Macy’s Department store in New York City and in 1888 Isidor and his brother Nathan became co-owners of the store. Isidor also served as Democratic representative in the House of Representatives in the 1890’s. Tragically, Isidor and his wife Ida died during their return trip from a vacation in Europe on board the legendary Titanic in April 1912. Living history The most prominent landmark in Otterberg is the Abbey Church, which offers concerts and outdoor activities on the church square. The square features a granite sculpture of historic life and times in the city. The neighboring Altstadt, or historic area, is great for strolling and dipping into the age of the Walloons who left their mark with gorgeous and well-preserved semi-timbered houses. For details and a map of the historic buildings, visit: http://www.otterberg. de/sehenswert. You can also get an authentic feel of a covered wagon ride on a virtual tour of the former monastery, which can be booked under https://www. otterbach-otterberg.de/tourismusfreizeit/gaestefuehrungen/time-travel/.

The Stadtmuseum offers insight to the history of the town and a special section is dedicated to Isidor Straus, the most prominent Otterberger. Easy riding and modern innovation Leaping back into the 20th century, visit the Motorrad Museum in Otterbach. Since 1980, Heinz Luthringhauser has offered a permanent display of historically important motorcycles. The museum is in the former Protestant church in Otterbach where founder and motorbike race legend, Luthringhauser acted as director until his death in 1997. Among other prizes, Luthringhauser won the Tourist Trophy (TT) in 1974, the toughest road race on the Isle of Man. He collected 80 years of motorcycle history in flawless condition. The display includes German, Italian, British and Japanese models and the development of engines. In the year 1911 the signal tower for changing railway switches was opened at the train station at Lampertsmühle-Otterbach. With increased train services, for example, transporting sandstone from nearby quarries, more mobility and prosperity was available to the town at that time. Since the machinery was switched to a modern electronic system in 2005, the switching station is no longer used. The impressive mechanical devices with pulleys and antiquated signals can be viewed in the Stellwerk Museum, tours are available upon request at: https://www.otterbach-otterberg. de/tourismus-freizeit/museen-undausstellungen/stellwerkmuseum/

Theater and musicals in the middle of nature Musical and nature enthusiasts might enjoy visiting the Freilichtbühne in Katzweiler, a stage in the middle of the forest since 1951. After a two year break, the stage is opening this year and offering performances of “Sams” (a week full of Saturdays) and “Urmel aus dem Eis” (Urmel from the ice) for children and families as well as “Zoom,” a musical featuring hits from the 1980s, in its evening performances. More information can be found here: https://www.freilichtspiele-katzweiler. de/stuecke

Stonehenge in England. While the circle in England is 4,000 years old and had religious character, this structure is much younger and symbolizes the 12 individual towns in the union community growing together. The sandstone tells a story of itself, about residents making a living out of chipping out stones and of long gone days with sea and river sediment from 290 million years ago. There is a slanted steel column in the middle and each obelisk has the coat of arms of one of the villages, as well as the digit of the hour. Try reading the time of the day without using electronic equipment!

Space walk - What time is it? The Planetenweg (planet path) starting from Heiligenmoschel leads you on a walk from Pluto past all of the planets in our solar system up to the sun, in exact relation to each other. Enjoy a walk in “outer space” with each planet marked with an information table. The complete path is 7.3 km long with a fantastic panoramic view of the north Palatinate. At the end you will encounter a walkable sundial (Sonnenuhr) with 12 obelisks made out of local sandstone on Reiserberg between Heiligenmoschel, Schneckenhausen, Schallodenbach and Niederkirchen. Visitors will notice that the structure comprised of 12 large stones in a circle on a hill very much resembles

Festivals and entertainment There are various restaurants and pubs in the picturesque old buildings, music events take place throughout the year. You can catch classic and Christmas concerts held in the Abbey Church. A Walloon Fair takes place each July with vendors offering goods and a colorful entertainment program. The monastery herb gardens are open for the public every second Sunday during the summer. A Halloween event is planned for Oct. 31 and the traditional Christmas Market will take place in front of the church every Saturday during the holiday season. This year the Frühlingfest (Spring Festival) is scheduled for June 11 and 12. Don’t miss out on the colorful costumes and the parade on Sunday, June 12.

Did you know that… The American Forces Network (AFN) had an antenna just south of Sambach? It aired on 1107 kHz and was positioned on a 136 meter (410 ft) steel framed mast. It was erected in 1951 and shut down in 2014. The Abbey Church is the second largest sacral building in Rheinland-Pfalz. Only the Cathedral in Speyer is larger. Classic Advent concerts take place every Saturday during the season. In 1708 joint use of the church by Protestants and Catholics led to problems. The solution was to install a wall inside the church leading to services being offered in the transept for the Catholics and in the nave for the Protestants. In 1979 the wall was removed and the church is now shared by both denominations. You can see animals such as horses, cats, dogs and chickens, learn a muscial instrument and discover nature at Pappelhof in Schneckenhausen. A farmers‘ market with 70 vendors with regional produce takes place in September. A culinary hike with an English menu takes place in June, including a booth at the sundial on Reiserberg. And, that there are a number of attractive hiking and biking routes that can be discovered by map or per GPS.

The 65th Air Base Group enables the Global Gateway mission by providing Europe’s only airlift, airdrop and aeromedical evacuation flying operations wing with a crucial stopover location.

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Edgar Grimaldo 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Lajes Field, Portugal, known as the “Crossroads of the Atlantic,” has served as the backbone for airlift missions from the United States to Europe, Asia and Africa since its construction in 1934. The installation is uniquely situated on the islands of the Azores archipelago in the Atlantic ocean. A small team of Portuguese and U.S. Air Force Airmen facilitate operations as part of the 65th Air Base Group. Lajes has not only served a pivotal role throughout World War II, fueling and supplying over 1,900 American aircraft, but continues to provide support to the Portuguese Search and Rescue 751st Squadron. “At Lajes, we are the sole fuel provider for the Portuguese SAR squadron,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Christopher Peak, 65th Logistics Readiness Squadron fuels operations section chief. “The fuel we provide helps the SAR cover an estimated two million square miles, providing people in that perimeter emergency help when needed.” Additionally, Lajes has continued to innovate by finding methods to reduce fuel waste. This is done by reusing excess fuel not utilized throughout missions. Unused fuel goes through extensive tests measuring its cleanliness and viability for future missions. “It came to our knowledge that the Portuguese air force from the mainland was dumping unused fuel instead of reusing it,” said Jaime Da Silva, 65 LRS physical science aid. “Speaking with the Portuguese, we were able to show them the extensive process used to reuse fuel and save the Portuguese military money.”

The 65 ABG is only one of many geographically separated units carrying out Ramstein Air Base’s mission to provide Europe’s only airlift, airdrop, and aeromedical evacuation flying operations.

21 TSC receives new Command Sergeant Major by Maj. Vonnie Wright 21st Theater Sustainment Command Soldiers, Friends and Families of Team 21 welcomed Command Sgt. Maj. Kofie Primus, senior enlisted adviser, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, June 3 as he succeeded Command Sgt. Maj. Sean Howard during a change of responsibility ceremony on Daenner Field. This is a huge day for both Sergeant’s Major, but this is especially true for Howard as this is the end of a 32-year Army journey. Maj. Gen. James Smith, commanding general, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, gave him high praise on his Army career and tenure within the command as he compared him to Maj. Gen. Charles Draper William Canham, who was one of the first to land at Omaha Beach during WWII and later became the deputy commander of the 8th Infantry Division. Historically, Maj. Gen. Canham was accompanied by two of his Soldiers to receive the surrender of the Germans at the German command headquarters of General Ramcke. Upon entrance of that headquarters, he was stopped and asked for his credentials by General Ramcke. Without hesitation, he turned to his Soldiers and told General Ramcke that these were his credentials. “Command Sgt. Maj. Howard these Soldiers out here on the parade field and the thousands more they represent are your credentials. I’ve heard this is how you wanted to end an illustrious 32-year career, with your Soldiers by your side. You’ve done that.” Yet, in his true fashion, Howard marched right up to the podium and gave every bit of credit to his Soldiers. “Maj. Gen. Smith thank you for these kind and sincere words,” said Howard. “I truly feel that I’m not worthy of them that’s just how I feel. The real heroes are out there on this field. That’s just how I was raised.” Serving in five decades and six presidential administrations that very well may be true.

Howard enlisted in 1989 as a wheeled vehicle mechanic. From serving in Desert Storm and taking cover from SCUD missiles to his multiple deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom he has deployed 8 times in service to this nation. Yet, his time at Team 21 is where he truly shined. Howard was at the forefront of the COVID-19 pandemic for the unit making countless inspiring videos, physically checking on his Soldiers’ welfare and reassuring Families during town hall discussions bringing hope and inspiration to the theater. His true care for his Soldiers during times of limited movement and restricted access during the pandemic was shown through his actions by personally leading the improvement of 22 Forward Operating Sites with high-speed Wifi access, brand new gym equipment and state of the art recreation centers to boost the morale during stressful times all over the world for our deployed Soldiers that they continue to enjoy today. Howard carried that same People U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. Kofie Primus, incoming 21st Theater Sustainment Command senior enlisted advisor, gives his remarks during a change of responsibility ceremony in Daenner Kaserne, June 2. Command Sgt. Maj. Primus is the 19th Command Sergeant Major for 21 TSC.

First mentality while making history during Operation Allies Welcome. His treatment of the Afghan travelers was equal to the same empathy and compassion given to his Soldiers. “I personally witnessed you care for the over 10,000 Afghan travelers we had in our care at Rhine Ordnance Barracks, a hefty portion of the 30,000 travelers that entered through Ramstein Air Base,” said Smith. “No matter the operation and task that was given to this unit, you always selflessly put People First. Our Soldiers are successful today because they know you cared for them every day, without fail or thought of personal gain; you even cared for them more than you cared about your own welfare.”

Command Sgt. Maj. Howard again addressed these accolades and thanked the Soldiers for making it all possible. “To all the G-Staff, Colonels, and Sergeants Major this is the most organized professional resilient group of leaders I have ever had the privilege to serve with,” said Howard. “From the bottom of my heart thank you for all your countless hours of sacrifices you’ve made over the last 30 months that I’ve had the privilege to watch you perform at the highest of levels day in and day out. You made all this possible. Not me.” Howard will now travel to his hometown of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and finally, take a knee and provide himself with plenty of self-care with his family as he will enjoy his retirement.

Command Sgt. Maj. Primus will pick up where Howard left off and continue to care for Team 21 Soldiers. He is no stranger to this command as he just relinquished responsibility of the 405th Army Field Support Brigade, where he too, made history. Primus was instrumental in helping Team 21 through two Defender rotations, supporting over 22,000 Afghan travelers during Operation Allies Welcome, and fully activating all of 405th AFSB’s Army Pre-Positioned Stocks for the first time in the unit’s history in support of operations in Ukraine. Witnessing Primus’s hard work and leadership firsthand, Maj. Gen. Smith gives his new battle buddy a warm welcome. “Catrina and I welcome you, your wife Genesis, and your two sons Cristian and Caiden here today,” said Smith. “I look forward to leading our team to many successes with you, and I know you will take this team to new heights.” Primus, filled with gratitude, gave thanks to the command and the Soldiers for the opportunity to lead again within the unit. “Sir, thank you for the trust and confidence and for the opportunity to lead such a world-class organization that continuously makes things happen for U.S. Army Europe and our NATO Allies,” said Primus. “I look forward to serving alongside you, the Soldiers, DA Civilians, and the Family members of Team 21.” In great Army tradition as one impactful leader leaves, another one replaces the void and carries the team forward. Team 21 will now continue to set the theater in Europe and Africa under Primus’ wise counsel and leadership.

More than 500 individuals, both in person and virtually, gathered to attend an Enlisted Summit at Ramstein Air Base, May 24.

The Enlisted Summit was an all-day event geared toward equipping enlisted members with tools for inspiring resilient and confident leaders. “Today, our enlisted corps focuses on a deeper understanding of the mission and of themselves,” said 86th Airlift Wing Command Chief Master Sgt. Charmaine N. Kelley. “There is so much asked of our Airmen, they are giving so much of themselves to everything, but themselves.” The summit offered strategies

Story and photos by Tech. Sgt. Nicholas Alder 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs As spring starts to warm, the time comes again to clean up Kaiserslautern Military Community facilities and neighborhoods, as part of Installation Excellence Day. But, the KMC can continue this effort year-round. Annually, the 786th Civil Engineer Squadron coordinates a spring cleanup project on April 21. KMC personnel are requested to clean the interiors and exteriors of base facilities and housing areas. “This is a base-wide event that includes all our tenant units so we can ensure we are taking care of where we work and live,” said Lt. Col. Jonathan Herman, 786 Civil Engineering Squadron commander.

The clean-up focuses on both the interior and exterior of buildings and facilities. To keep up with it year-round, CE recommends cleaning floors and carpets, entryways and stairwells, and around windows for the interior. For the exterior of buildings, members are responsible for their building fascia, common areas, and parking lots. KMC members can pick up litter, pull weeds, rake leaves, trim shrubbery, and remove fallen storm debris. To assist Airmen on Installation Excellence Day, and year-round, their work center facility managers can visit the U-Fix-It store to check out hand tools, power tools, rakes, shovels, brooms, and other equipment to help tidy up their buildings. “The Civil Engineer Squadron is standing ready to help out any way we can,” said Herman.

The effort to clean up across the installation does not go unnoticed and keeps KMC Airmen prepared for the next Installation Excellence Day, which includes a reward for the top three work centers and facilities that are judged to be most tidy. Rewards range from gift cards to coveted parking spots. “Please help your facility managers make the most of the opportunity to keep our base clean,” said Lt. Col. Micah Neece, 86th Comptroller Squadron

86 LRS fuels Air Force Airmen assigned to the 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron pose for a photo with their Best Fuels Management Flight in U.S. Air Forces Europe award at Ramstein Air Base, May 26. Petroleum, oils and lubricant Airmen are responsible for all the fuel servicing on the flightline, including ground products, for the Ramstein area.

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Madelyn Keech 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs When many people think of the U.S. Air Force, they may think about airpower, but airpower starts from the ground. Aircraft would not be able to get off the flightline at Ramstein Air Base without the 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron Fuels Management Flight, the foundation of the airlift mission. Petroleum, oils and lubricant Airmen support Ramstein, tenant units, other nations and distinguished visitors by inspecting, maintaining and dispensing fuel from million gallon tanks, fuel trucks, mobile fuel piping assemblies and cryogenic tanks. POL is responsible for all the fuel servicing on the flightline, including ground products, for this area. “The LRS mission is to get people where they need to be in a timely manner,” said Staff

Sgt. Shane Martins, 86 LRS fuels accountant. Approximately 90 Airmen are assigned to the 86 LRS Fuels Management Flight. While they are under-manned, they work twice as hard to get the job done. It paid off when they were named the Best FMF in U.S. Air Forces Europe on May 26 for their accomplishments throughout last year. The flight’s daily operations ensure that Ramstein remains the global gateway, but POL also plays a huge role in humanitarian missions such as the COVID19 pandemic, Operation Allies Refuge, and the Ukraine crisis. “Being named the best fuels management flight in USAFE is a culmination of the hard work, dedication and adaptability of our Airmen in a year where they met numerous challenges,” said Senior Master Sgt. Thomas Capaldo, 86 LRS fuels superintendent. “The Ramstein POL flight, like many Airmen across the 86th Airlift Wing, U.S. & GERMAN ATTORNEYS U.S. & GERMAN DIVORCES • SUPPORT ISSUES • EEO WILLS & PROBATE • EMPLOYMENT • PERSONAL INJURY MSPB • CONTRACTOR ISSUES • TAX ADVISORS

exceeded expectations when the world called and this award is proof of those efforts.” One notable achievement POL accomplished last year was providing assistance during OAR, said Capaldo. While supporting airlift efforts on the flightline, Airmen manned various jobs to support the humanitarian mission as augmentees. Capaldo said POL Airmen also created a Department of Transportation equivalent fuel truck driving program that was created and run by Airmen in the flight, complied with DoT regulations and sustained flightline fuels support. Behind nearly every mission at Ramstein, the POL flight is supporting them by providing the assets they need like clean fuel. “Despite the numerous challenges over the last 12 months, this flight has risen to the challenge,” Capaldo said. “I’m very proud of each one of these fuel professionals.”

U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Daniel McShan, 86th Security Forces Squadron combat arms and training instructor, supervises CATM training at Kapaun Air Station, May 11. CATM instructors step in to provide guidance when Airmen qualify on weapons for mission readiness.

U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Daniel McShan, 86th Security Forces Squadron combat arms training and maintenance instructor at Ramstein Air Base, lives to teach. “I spent some time with CATM, and saw how much fun the instructors had teaching and helping others,” said McShan, who started his CATM adventure 6 months ago. “I liked the idea of assisting students and helping them improve.” McShan joined the Air Force as a Security Forces Airman and his first assignment was at Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri. Once he arrived at Ramstein Air Base for his second assignment, he decided to pursue his goal of becoming a combat arms instructor. “Ever since my first annual feedback, I made sure to add that I wanted to become combat arms,” said McShan. “My leadership noticed that I kept putting that in my performance reports, so they gave me the opportunity.”

To some, combat arms might seem like all they do is shoot weapons, McShan assures that there is more to the job than just that. “We have to inspect and gauge all weapons across most of U.S. Air Forces in Europe,” said McShan. “It’s quite a lot of maintenance, and shooting is actually a small part of what we do.” 86th Security Forces Squadron combat arms instructors teach dozens of Airmen every day about critical weapon system skills. As an instructor, the classroom aspect of Combat Arms is what McShan finds most rewarding. “My favorite part of teaching is when I can see the student struggling to comprehend a portion of the training,” said McShan. “I rephrase it to help them, and I see the concept click in their heads when they understand it. It’s really rewarding to see your efforts pay off.” Teaching is a difficult skill and requires many hours of effort and fine tuning an approach. Being a teacher was not as easy as McShan had expected. “The greatest challenge in becoming a teacher was my

assumptions of what others may know,” said McShan. “Many have some cursory knowledge about weapons, but that knowledge isn’t always right, so I’ve learned to always go over the details with people to make sure they’re aware.” For McShan, he finds this job immensely rewarding. He knows that the lifecycle of a combat arms instructor typically ends at the rank of Technical Sergeant, but if he could, he would stay an instructor for the remainder of his career. “Once I joined CATM, I felt I was contributing to the mission and had a larger impact,” said McShan. “I’m very grateful to be part of Combat Arms.” At the end of the day, McShan feels a connection to his work. He says their motto really resonates with him and drives his passion every day on the job. “We have to be calm in the face of danger,” McShan said. “We train Airmen in peacetime to prepare for war.” KAISERSLAUTERN

FREEDOM FESTIVAL – SCHWARZ-ROT-GOLD, JUNE 10 -12, HAMBACH SCHLOSSSTRASSE, NEUSTADT-HAMBACH

Step into history and enjoy the freedom festival at Hambach near Neustadt/Weinstraße. The festival is based upon the historical Hambacher Fest in the year 1832, when the cry for national unity, democracy, civil freedom and freedom of the press was openly expressed and served as a milestone in the development of a democratic German nation. The Hambach Festival – SchwarzRot-Gold (black-red-gold, as the German flag) offers: Wine tasting, regional specialties, cultural events such as music, arts and theater for young and old, within the romantic Hambach Schlossstraße lined with historic buildings, courtyards, wineries and restaurants/pubs. Keeping our NATO allies strong: TACP Warfighters save Polish boy Story and photos by Senior Airman Taylor Slater 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs POZNAN AVENIDA, Poland — U.S. Air Force members are sworn to protect not only the lives of their own countrymen, but also the lives of fellow allies. Two warfighters from the 4th Expeditionary Air Support Operations Squadron were able to put those vows into practice May 4 when they saved the life of a Polish boy. Tech. Sgt. Luis Garcia and Staff Sgt. Iliya Tereschenko, Tactical Air Control Party members, deployed to Poland in April. The pair took a trip to the Poznan Avenida mall when they saw a lone boy collapse on the floor, convulsing violently. “Foam started coming out of his mouth fairly fast when he dropped to the ground,” Tereschenko recalls. “He started shaking and that’s when I was like ‘Something’s not right,’ and I rushed to him.” Tereschenko had seen these signs once before in high school:

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Iliya Tereschenko, 4th Expeditionary Air Support Operations Squadron Tactical Air Control Party member, poses for a photo in Poland in May. TACPs provide the U.S. Army with airspace coordination and integration, facilitating cooperation with Polish forces and other NATO allies.

U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Luis Garcia, 4th Expeditionary Air Support Operations Squadron non-commissioned officer in charge of Tactical Air Control Party, poses for a photo in Poland in May. Garcia, along with Staff Sgt. Iliya Tereschenko, 4 EASOS TACP member, saved the life of a Polish boy while supporting the U.S. Army during a deployment in Poland.

the boy was suffering from a seizure. In what Tereschenko describes as instinct, the duo immediately took action and positioned the boy on his side. Tereschenko placed a backpack under the boy’s head and held him to avoid self-injury. He inspected the boy’s mouth for any obstructions that might interrupt his breathing and made sure he wasn’t biting down on his tongue. “There’s a bit of a shock element to it, and then it goes away and you’re like ‘Oh, I can do something about it,” Tereschenko said. “So why not?” Another problem dawned on the duo as a crowd began to gather: the language barrier. It was one thing to encounter an emergency, it was another thing entirely to have an emergency in another country where

one does not speak the language. “It was confusing [because] we do not know the language and it was our first time at the mall,” Garcia said. “We went and saw the child laying on the floor and there is nobody around and we are like ‘Holy crap, what do we do?’” Luckily, the two were able to find a bystander that spoke some English to help translate for them. The boy’s condition began to stabilize soon afterward and he regained consciousness. “I was really happy about that,” Tereschenko said. “Because that is one of those points where this could be a mild seizure or something way worse.” Mall paramedics showed up, with first responders arriving soon after.

While saving Polish lives is not a regular part of the 4 EASOS’ job description, working with Polish forces and other NATO allies is a part of their regular job duties while deployed. 435th Air Expeditionary and Air Ground Operations Wings TACP warfighters also work with Polish allies during exercises and integration events. “We show them how we run things, and then we pick up on how they do it,” Tereschenko said. “When it comes to big exercises, we [all] bring what we have to offer to the table. If there’s something they need training on or vice versa we get together and help each other out there.” TACPs primarily provide the U.S. Army with airspace coordination and integration. TACP assistance also facilitates the production of field tested techniques, tactics and procedures which strengthens the bond required to have an effective partnership with Polish military forces. Despite saving a life, neither warfighter would call themselves heroes. Tereschenko felt fortunate to be equipped with the training to save his life and be there at the right time. “I think everyone would have done the same thing, especially if they had the knowledge or training,” Tereschenko said. Garcia noted that there are so many more service members who have achieved greater feats. “It never feels justified having the knowledge of individuals that have sacrificed much more, including their own lives, in the service of others in need,” Garcia said. The pair has not seen the boy since that day, but they were reassured of his condition after seeing him regain consciousness, motor ability, and letting the first responders take over. “I do not like being an observer,” Tereschenko said. “If I have something to contribute I’ll do it, but I do not like to watch.” Misfortune, whether at the mall or in contested environments, can strike at any time. The Air Force’s presence in NATO countries is part of the U.S.’ commitment to supporting allies in the event of emergencies. “It can happen at any time,” Tereschenko said. “What matters is that you have training and can contribute. I do not think of it as any more than that.”

Garrison, NATO team up for friendly game vs. Romanian soccer legend-led crew Story and photos by Nicole Alberico U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz OVIDIU, Romania — Two U.S. Soldiers joined military service members from Romania and the United Kingdom in a friendly soccer match against former Romanian professional players and coaches May 18 at Gheorghe Hagi Football Academy. Oana Copaceanu, the garrison’s host-nation advisor for Army Support Activity-Black Sea at Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base, Romania, noticed the success — and morale boost — the garrison’s April’s MWR match was and decided to take it to the big leagues. “Sport is what brings everybody together,” said Copaceanu. “Soccer especially in Europe.” Two Soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment represented the United States. Copaceanu, with the help of U.K.’s Royal Air Force, engaged with the local soccer academy, located about nine miles north of Constanta. The academy is owned and operated by Romanian soccer legend Gheorghe Hagi, who helped secure the venue and alumni players to compete against the NATO team. While the event was closed to the public, about 15 members of the Romanian press covered the event, including one station

providing live television coverage of the match. “Events like these show how interested, and curious the local community is on what the garrison, Americans and NATO soldiers are doing on MK,” said Copaceanu. While Copaceanu exercised her host-nation skills to secure the event, members of the United Kingdom’s Royal Air Force exercised the players on the field. According to one of the RAF members, the makeshift team only had a few practice sessions together as a team. Given duty schedules and mission, not everyone was able to come together at the same time, he said. Getting them on a field off base for the match was the first time the teammates worked together as a team. “But that’s the spirit of NATO, isn’t it?” he said. Team captain Royal Air Force Sgt. Simon Stone, a physical training instructor, agreed. “It’s great to mix with the other nations on the base and to play against a professional team is really exciting for us,” said Simon during an interview with reporters. “To really bring all the nations together and to emphasize the fact that we are together as NATO… It’s a really good idea to get together and play some football.” Final score? Tie 3-3.

Both teams gathered for a photo and handshakes.

‘America’s First Brain Surgeon’ served during Civil War, World War I by Janet A. Aker Military Health System Communications Army Maj. (Dr.) William Williams Keen Jr. was a pioneering military doctor whose career spanned surgical duty on the bloody battlefields of the American Civil War through influential research work during World War I. Once known as “America’s first brain surgeon,” Keen helped propel numerous advances in medicine. He played a key role in the birth of bacteriology, neurology, use of antisepsis, sterile surgical techniques, brain surgery, and the breakthrough discovery that insects carry and spread diseases. With a unique perspective after serving in two cataclysmic wars, Keen wrote a 1918 paper journal article on JSTOR’s website called “Military Surgery in 1861 and in 1918.” In it, he marveled at the knowledge gained in the field of military medicine during his 50 years of service and expressed his excitement for what was to come in the next 50 years and beyond, according to staff at the National Museum of Health and Medicine National Museum of Health and Medicine website in Silver Spring, Maryland. In his influential paper journal article, Military Surgery in 1861 and in 1918 on JSTOR’s website, Keen lamented the countless deaths during the Civil War that could have been avoided with better military field surgical techniques and surgeons with advanced knowledge. “Between these two dates is a veritable chasm of ignorance which we can only really appreciate when we peer over its edge and discover how broad and deep it is,” he wrote. “Clinical observation has done much, but research and chiefly experimental research, has done far more.” “Research has not yet ceased to give us better and better methods of coping with disease and death, and — thank God — it will never cease so long as disease and death continue to afflict the human race,” he wrote. Keen’s work played an important role in the significant improvements in battlefield survival rates during conflicts in the 20th century. Interests and advances He attributed his expertise to the successes of rigorous research, for which he passionately advocated, according to a profile of Dr. William Williams Keen on the National Museum of Health and Medicine’s website by the National Museum of Health and Medicine, a branch of

the Research Support Division of the Defense Health Agency Research and Engineering Directorate. During the Civil War, Keen developed an interest in documenting injuries of the nervous system. Those studies are considered to be the origin of American neurology. His service centered on Turner’s Lane Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which was devoted to treating injuries and diseases of the nerves. There, he was an associate of Dr. George R. Morehouse and Dr. S. Weir Mitchell, who was an early believer in what is commonly known as phantom limb pain.

Keen collaborated with both men to write a classic text, “Gunshot Wounds and Other Injuries of Nerves,” published in 1864, said Laura Cutter, an archivist at the museum. When Dr. Joseph Lister, an influential British surgeon, came to Philadelphia during his 1876 tour of America, Keen heard his views on antisepsis in surgery and was one of the first American surgeons to adopt Lister’s system. In 1892, Keen co-authored the first American surgery text based on Listerian principles, Cutter said. Keen also gained celebrity as

the first surgeon in the Americas to perform a successful brain tumor removal in 1887. As such, he became known as “America’s first brain surgeon.” He saw surgical duty while still in medical school at the first major battle of the Civil War, the First Battle of Bull Run in Manassas, Virginia, in July 1861. He also served during the Second Battle

of Bull Run in August 1862, and, at the deadliest one-day battle in American military history, the Battle of Antietam, Sharpsburg, Maryland, in September 1862. In March 1862, he was commissioned out of medical school as an acting assistant surgeon in the Union Army and was in charge of Eckington General Hospital near Washington, D.C.

CASTLE from Page 1 clothes for the night. “Where?” I ask, hustling along the trail to join him at a bench. “Over there!” He points through a break in the trees. Below us, a hidden tree-filled valley opens up to reveal an old castle perched on a cliff. Deep below it, a river has carved a U-bend nearly around the entire castle cliff. This is the Ruine Schmidtburg. A cool crumbling castle ruin, and our campground for the night. The keyword here is trekking camp Tent camping can be a bit elusive in Germany. Sure, there seem to be campgrounds all over the place, but they primarily cater to the RV crowd. It’s a bit tough to find nature-inspired places to pitch your tent and have some solitude, especially if you’re like my family and enjoy backpacking. We load our packs with all the essentials — tent, sleeping bags, food, tiny stove, and emergency gear. Then we hike miles into the wilderness and set up camp. And while that type of wild camping isn’t allowed in Germany, there is an alternative! In Germany, if you’d like to ‘backpack’ camp — search for trekking. Trekking camps are specific natural locations, only accessible via trail, where you may tent camp. Usually, you must book them ahead of time. Think along the lines of backcountry campsites in the larger U.S. national parks.

A true medieval castle One such site is at the Schmidtburg castle. The castle was built sometime around the year 926, above a tributary of the Nahe river. It was primarily owned by the Wildgraf family throughout the middle ages, with much family feuding over the ages about whom should control it. Eventually, it fell into disrepair and was destroyed in 1688 during the Nine Years War (also called The War of the Great Alliance). The area found itself at the fringe of the Holy Roman Empire, and under invasion from France as King Louis XIV attempted to claim Germanic lands. Restoration in the 1970’s and 80’s stabilized the castle walls and created an incredible place to camp. Inside the castle trekking camp Our site, the Nordturm (the North Tower), had four tall walls. All the campsites are also enclosed in former castle rooms with names like Kapelle (Chapel), Zwinger (Kennel), and Mühlenweg (Mill Way). They are open and fairly exposed. So, it was hot on the sunny day we camped. One small tent may occupy each site. And, while the website said that meant 3 people, we were told 4 people was fine as long as we were in a single small backpacking tent. In addition, there are a few shared-use metal firepans in communal areas. The castle also has two group sites for multiple tents — one in the burggarten (castle garden) and one in the burghof (castle courtyard). Both sit at lower levels

than the single tent sites, so they are a lot shadier. They are still within the castle walls. You must hike in To get to the Schmidtburg castle trekking camp, you must hike. This can be as close as roughly 1km or a lot further, depending on where you start. It’s important that you are able to carry in a backpack everything you will need for camping, eating, and safety. There are two very clean pit-toilets available. There is also a water spigot which is officially labeled non-potable because it is not treated, but the camp host told us she trusts it as it comes straight from a spring. Use at your own risk. We did! The castle is intended for use on the Soonwaldsteig long-distance trail. The entire trail runs 84km from the town of Kirn through the mostly wild Soonwald (Soon Forest) along ridges and then down to the Rhine river into the town of Bingen. There are 3 other trekking camps along the trail as well. A peaceful and relaxing place to camp After arriving at our campsite and setting up the tent, we spent a quiet day looking around. The castle was a great place for the kids to run around and explore. It is a pretty big ruin, and you have access to most spaces plus a trail that skirts the entire outer wall. The lower section, where the camping is, has lots of low-walled rooms and stairways into fun spaces where it’s cool to imagine daily life in the middle ages.

June 10, 2022

The upper portion was a defensive area and sits quite high with amazing views. We also hiked down to the river to cool off and skip stones. In addition, there is a Celtic village and mining museum further along the trail nearby. There was a full moon during our visit, but I’d expect plenty of stars on dark nights. We slept well listening to the forest and surrounded by medieval castle walls. For more information, visit www.soonwaldsteig.de/en
