Many children might say the only thing matching the excitement of a birthday celebration is the chance to kick off the party earlier than scheduled. For Soldiers from around U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern, including the 21st Theater Support Command, 10th Army Air and
Missile Defense Command and others, such an early celebration began with a three-mile run held June 8 on Rhine Ordnance Barracks. The event, officially known as the “Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers Army Birthday Run,” attracted more than 600 participants. While the traditional birthday of the

Airmen help unveil Winters’ leadership monument by Rick Scavetta U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern SAINTE-MARIE-DU-MONT, France — Airmen from the 435th Contingency Response Group tugged at the silk camouflage parachute, unveiling a 12-foot bronze statue of Maj. Richard Winters, who led paratroopers from Company E, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment during the D-Day landings. They were among hundreds who gathered June 6 along a causeway to Utah Beach to honor Winters’ leadership and the memory of all those who led troops in combat during the liberation of Normandy during World War II. “We were in the crowd and they wanted some military support. We were honored to play this small, small role,” said Tech Sgt. Brian Angell, 435th Air Ground Operations Wing, who helped unveil the memorial. “It’s important for us to keep this history alive.” During the first week of June, U.S. Army paratroopers from the 5th Quartermaster Detachment, based at Rhine Ordnance Barracks, and a contingent of Airmen from the 86th Airlift Wing took part in several D-Day anniversary events in Normandy. Among those who attended the Winters’ monument dedication were nine World War II veterans, former Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge and Maj. Gen. Jim McConville, commander of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). The memorial, unveiled 68 years after Winters and fellow 101st Airborne Division troops jumped into Normandy to fight the Nazis and liberate France, depicts Winters running with an M-1 Garand rifle. The heroic story of Easy Company — from the D-Day landings, to fighting in Holland, Belgium and Germany — was told by historian Stephen Ambrose and became the popular television miniseries, “Band of Brothers.” Two members of Easy Company, Herb Suerth and Al Mampre, attended the unveiling. Only 19 Easy Company members are living. Winters, who died last year at age 92, would likely be overwhelmed by the BIRTHDAY, from Page 1
U.S. Army is recognized as June 14, logistics and other planning circumstances resulted in celebrating the Army’s 237th birthday a week early. As far as Tom Dennis was concerned, the most important thing was to simply get together and celebrate the U.S. Army, regardless of the day. “It’s a great way to start a Friday,” said Dennis, a civilian serving as the chief of sports and fitness for the garrison, who assisted with organizing the event. Runners hit the course moving out in formation with their units, leading to a column

crowd that gathered to honor him, Suerth said. “He was very humble, a simple fellow,” said Suerth, who joined Easy Company in Mourmelon, France, just before the 101st Airborne Division fought in Bastogne. “It’s a well-deserved memorial, especially for the subject of leadership — not just for Dick Winters, but for the leadership provided by young men who were practically no older than the guys they were leading into battle.” Winters, a first lieutenant serving as Easy Company’s executive officer during the jump, took command after 1st Lt. Thomas Meehan was killed when his C-47 Sky Train was hit by German antiaircraft guns. “He was thrust into a position of leadership,” Suerth said. “All of us have the ability to develop our leadership skills. The BOSS program, instrumental in organizing and staffing the run, also provided support along the course, which included numerous water points to provide refreshment. U.S. Army Spc. Cynetta Moore, who serves as the garrison BOSS president in addition to her daily military duties, said staging the event was by no means a last-minute affair. “We’ve been planning for the run since March,” said Moore, noting that synchronizing the operations of police escort, medical support and transportation necessary to bring everyone together was a
team effort. But most of all, the event was successful in helping to bring Soldiers and civilians together for exercise, fun and a way to honor the Army. U.S. Army Spc. Codney Olson, an early warning systems operator with the 10th AAMDC’s Alpha Battery, 5-7 Air Defense Artillery, agreed. “It was a great chance to go out for a run and get motivated, especially with a lot of the other Soldiers we don’t normally see,” said Olson, who, along with his unit, helps provide air defense capabilities in Europe for the U.S., Germany, and their allies. The only thing missing from this birthday celebration may have been the cake, yet none of the participants were
Dick excelled at it.” Nearby, at Brecourt Manor, Winters led a dozen paratroopers in an attack on four enemy 105-mm howitzers firing on a Utah beach causeway. With little guidance, Winters directed his Soldiers to hit the gun from the flanks, using a trench to attack one at a time. All the guns were destroyed, eliminating a threat to troops coming ashore. For his actions, Winters earned the Distinguished Service Cross. One of the U.S. Soldiers coming ashore that morning was Jack Port, 90, of Escondido, Calif., who landed on Utah Beach with the 4th Infantry Division and made his way inland. 7th CSC Soldiers train with Bosnia-Herzegovina forces during Shared Resilience Story and photos by Sgt. 1st Class Matthew E. Chlosta 7th Civil Support Command Public Affairs CAPLJINA, Bosnia-Herzegovina — Nineteen-ninety-five was a significant year in the history of BosniaHerzegovina. The Dayton Peace Accords were signed in December of that year to end the Bosnian War. That same year, the rock ‘n’ roll band U2 released the song, “Miss Sarajevo,” that highlighted to the world the tragic plight of civilians trying to survive in the capital during the conflict. In 1997, U2 was the first band to play a concert in Sarajevo since the end of the war. Fast forward to 2012, although a scatter of bullet holes still visibly pockmark some Capljina buildings, slowly the psychological wounds of the country are beginning to heal. The positive momentum continued May 28 to June 8 as the BosniaHerzegovina armed forces participated in and hosted Shared Resilience 2012, an annual U.S. European Command civil-military disaster and crisis management training exercise.
The interagency event, conducted in the spirit of partnership for peace, provided training for the U.S., BosniaHerzegovina and participating nations in medical readiness, humanitarian assistance and crisis consequence management. Among the joint U.S. force that participated were two U.S. Army Reserve units from the 7th Civil Support Command, headquartered in Kaiserslautern. The 361st Civil Affairs Brigade conducted key leader engagements throughout Capljina and the surrounding area to collect assessments of local infrastructure and public services in preparation for the culminating event, “Live Ex” on June 4 and 5. During the live exercise portion the 361st CA Bde. Soldiers split into two groups. They were tasked with going out in the local community to find out the most current information on sewage treatment, water supplies and emergency electrical grid shutoff during the hypothetical earthquake and chemical truck spill scenarios. One team visited the Capljina public services office and the local electric company.

Timothy Byrne, Co. A, company commander of the 361st CA Bde., 7th CSC, USAR, during a simulated earthquake and chemical spill scenario.

A, 361st CA Bde., 7th CSC, USAR, assess local capabilities during a simulated earthquake, chemical truck spill and bridge collapse June 4 as part of exercise Shared Resilience 12 in Capljina, Bosnia-Herzegovina.
The Bosnians were eager to participate. “There are some things you can’t learn in an educational setting,” said U.S. Army Sgt. Jacob Rogers, a civil affairs specialist with Company C, 361st Civil Affairs Brigade, 7th Civil Support Command, U.S. Army Reserves. “Working with real people puts the pressure on you, allows you to see the flaws you have and allows for us to work as a team to back each other up.” “It was a good opportunity to improve our skills, our equipment, our experience,” said Bosnia-Herzegovina armed forces Maj. Stanko Paradzik, a civil military cooperation officer. “It was not only a good opportunity to learn, it was a good experience to have Americans here, to have them around Capljina to build friendships.” A second set of 7th CSC Soldiers, troops from the 196th Medical Support Unit, also conducted assessments in preparation for the live exercise. They visited five different medical hospitals and facilities in multiple cities, including Mostar and Capljina, to evaluate and document their medical readiness and capabilities in anticipation of a possible future disaster. “That was the main bulk of our work last week to gather the information,” said U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Stephanie Clark, a medical health care specialist with the 196th Medical Support Unit, 7th Civil Support Command, U.S. Army Reserves. The 196th’s hospital assessments helped determine what level of care patients would receive based on a oneto-four numeric scoring system. A role four or level four would be considered the best or highest level in compari-
son to a role one or level one, which could potentially be used as an immediate triage facility within a close distance to a crisis or catastrophe site. Once a patient was initially assessed, then a critical patient might then be moved to a higher level medical facility for more urgent treatment based on the extent of their injuries and taken to the appropriately numbered medical treatment facility. “We did concentrate on four main areas (during medical facility assessments),” Clark said. “We looked at the emergency room, the laboratory, the pharmacy, because we have a pharmacist, and radiology.” These three days (June 4 to 6) are basically a culmination of everything we assessed prior to the “Live Ex,” Clark said. “We used the scenario to say, should something occur (we know) they have these many beds available, they have this staff on hand, they have these many supplies on hand things like that,” Clark said. Some of the disaster scenarios used to test or “exercise” the BosniaHerzegovina armed forces and local civilian authorities included a helicopter crash, wildfires, flooding, chemical spill, earthquake and a building collapse. “Based on those scenarios, we’re seeing how they react to the different casualties that come in,” Clark added. There were close to 500 participants involved in Shared Resilience 2012, with more than 160 U.S. service members and more than 320 from the 12 partner nations, including Montenegro and Serbia. “We’re all trying to learn from one another,” Rogers said. “I’d love to come back in the future.”

He rejoined his unit, which liberated the port of Cherbourg, before fighting south through Normandy and later entering Paris. “I was just a kid, only 22 years old,” Port said, drifting into silence. Like many D-Day veterans, Port wouldn’t discuss the fighting. A cool breeze passed through the farmlands causing the American flag to flap beside the French tricolor. A World War II-era spotter plane buzzed the crowd, who listened to several speeches about how Winters embodied leadership principles, his courageous acts and his humble nature. Winters wrote “the essential page in the story of our liberation,” said Henri Millet, mayor of Sainte-Marie-Du Mont. Winters’ actions will not be forgotten, he said. “This monument erected here in our commune will be here to remind us,” Millet added. Winters’ leadership and heroism helped save the lives of countless Soldiers on D-Day and throughout the war, said McConville, who has served three tours with the Screaming Eagles — currently as the division’s commanding officer. Over the past 10 years of fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq, the 101st has been one of the most deployed divisions, McConville said. “We gather great strength from the history of the 101st Airborne Division,” McConville said. “And we have an incredible history that began here in Normandy.”

any people have heard of “fit to fight” but how many Airmen know proper nutrition is also an important part of fitness? A balanced diet can help fuel one’s body, which in turn assists in maintaining fitness goals. The 86th Force Support Squadron has implemented a new Air Forcewide standardized program known as “Go for Green.” The “Go for Green” program is an easy-to-understand, color-coded system that shows what’s good to eat and what items should be consumed less. “‘Go for Green’ program is a new program … implemented Air Force wide,” said Airman 1st Class Brittany Davis, a food service journeyman. “It’s a way for Airmen to easily iden-
tify what items they should be eating in the dining facilities.” Green items are low-calorie, lowto-no-fat items that can be eaten as often as one likes, she said. Yellow items are a little higher in calories, have a little more fat and should be consumed occasionally. Whereas red items are the least nutritious, are higher in fat content and should be consumed rarely. Davis said the menu is the same but the program is used to help Airmen realize what they are eating, and visually tells them what they should and shouldn’t eat. “We provide more healthy choice items than we do fried items for instance,” said Staff Sgt. Bernaldo Martinez, store room assistant. “But we also provide rice, salad, eggs, yogurts, fruits and vegetables to give them a wide range (of) whatever it is that they actually want.” He said they serve a variety of meals throughout the week to

ould you like to tell your leaders what you think? Click on your link to the 2012 Air Force Climate Survey and get started. The survey will be available online through June 22. The Air Force Climate Survey is designed to assess the opinions and perceptions of the Air Force’s active-duty members, Reserve, Guard and civilian personnel on a wide range of topics, including resources, recognition, satisfaction and unit performance. The survey includes major command-specific questions, as well as comment questions so people can express opinions on how their organization can improve. Through the AF Climate Survey, all Air Force members have the chance to highlight concerns that directly affect them and their units’ mission. This feedback serves to improve each organization and the entire Air Force. Look for your personal invitation to the survey in your inbox. If an invitation was not received, Airmen can request a survey by sending an email to surveysupport@us.af.mil with the Subject line “Need an invitation to 2012 AF Climate Survey.” We need to ensure that we take this opportunity to “Speak Today, Shape Tomorrow.”

meet the needs of anyone who visits the dining facility, with the main customers being the Airmen in the dormitories. This new program helps ensure Airmen stay fit to fight and eating right, Davis said.
“If there are people going to PT boot camp or struggling with their PT test (Go for Green) makes it easier for them to come in here and identify what they should be eating in correlation with what their workout routine is,” she said.

The ABCs of PCSing: A workshop that helps by Airman 1st Class Hailey Haux 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Does making a permanent change of station create discouragement, stress or aggravation? Is it something never looked forward to because of all the work that goes into it? There is no need to fear; the ABCs of PCSing are here! The Ramstein Airman & Family Readiness Center holds its ABCs of PCSing workshop the first Thursday of every month at the Hercules Theater. The workshop has been on-going for eight years helping those getting ready to PCS by giving them the information needed to out-process. “Getting the process started is the hardest part,” said Tim Vohar, A&FRC community readiness consultant. “Most PCSers would show up to the various required appointments unprepared, but now they show up with completed documents and questions in hand.” The workshop gives information on what needs to be taken care of starting 180 days prior to their PCS date.
At the workshop, members are given a calendar checklist of the many things that need to be done and broken down into sections: 90 days-out, 60 days, 30 days, seven days and three days-out. “This will help quite a bit,” said Julia Garcia, a military dependent getting ready to PCS to Beal Air Force Base, Calif. “I’m the packer but my husband does the paperwork and coming here helps both of us understand what we need to be doing every step of the way.” The ABCs of PCSing even gives a checklist for packing day, moving day, on the way guidance and things to do when a person arrives at their new home. A legal representative advises PCSers to try and take pictures or videos of their electronics in use in case something happens, the individual will have documentation that the items were working before they were packed. An outbound representative explains how to get their orders and gives some helpful hints: keep copies of all out-processing documents and
be aware of the timeline and requirements. “The No. 1 mistake that the Traffic Management Office sees is that our customers do not fill out their port-call request forms correctly or completely, leaving out important information,” said Staff Sgt. Blake Gamez, 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron NCO in charge of passenger travel. “This workshop helps us because members can contact us already knowing their basic travel entitlements and limitations.” For PCSers with pets there is a calendar checklist of things that need to be done before the big move. “I wasn’t sure what we were going to have to do with our pets when we left,” Garcia said. “After coming to this class, I now know what needs to be done in order for us to PCS.” Attendees are given a package of materials that includes a rental termination notice, relocation assistance information and out-processing information for housing, furnishing management office, finance, Tricare, and valued added tax utilities. The school liaison officer distributes very practi-
cal binders containing pockets for all the important school papers PCSers will want to hand carry. “This workshop helped us a lot,” Garcia said. “My husband and I were confused about what needs to be done but, we got all of our questions answered and that’s a huge weight lifted off our shoulders.” Vohar said the ABCs of PCSing is a mandatory workshop for those leaving Ramstein. “Don’t wait,” Vohar said. “You don’t need your orders, just call the A&FRC about six months before your DEROS date and we will get you taken care of.” With the ABCs of PCSing helping give the information needed to have a successful move, there is no longer the need to feel discouraged or frazzled and PCSing can be a thing to look forward to. The next ABCs of PCSing workshop will be held July 5. For information and reservations, call the A&FRC at 480-5100. For more PCSing details, the Ramstein website, http://www. ramstein.af.mil, has a link that can help.
CSAF: Balance required to avoid a ‘hollow force’ by Tech. Sgt. Richard A. Williams Jr. Air Force Public Affairs Agency ARLINGTON, Va. — The Air Force chief of staff reinforced the importance of avoiding a “hollow force” to a group of civic and industry leaders attending the Air Force Association’s monthly breakfast here June 11. Gen. Norton Schwartz said the Air Force must secure the proper balance between three separate but closely related dimensions: readiness, modernization and force structure. “A shortfall in one or more of these dimensions leads to insufficiencies that also are distinct but intertwined — respectively: a hollow, aging and poorly postured force,” Schwartz said. “This complex interplay is why the oft-referenced ‘delicate balance’ is so difficult to achieve.” For the Air Force, an important part of achieving this balance is ensuring it has the right mix of active duty, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve Airmen and force structure, Schwartz said. To that end, Air Force leaders in all three components worked together on the fiscal 2013 budget request and related strategic planning to understand the compromises that can and must be made to maintain an effective, efficient force, he said. “Despite the fact that we did not always agree with complete unanimity, which is understand-
able due to different perspectives and institutional imperatives between the active and Reserve components, we stand by our consensus — together,” the general said. The Air Force’s plans to re-balance the force are needed in order to address the danger of unsustainable deployment rates by any one component, Schwartz said. “Our Reserve component is best optimized — or, put another way, our Reserve component affords us with the oft-referenced cost savings — when Guard and Reserve Airmen are deployed at lower rates than their active-duty counterparts,” the general said. Therefore, the Air Force’s current force structure
needs to be re-optimized in relation to current realities and future eventualities, he said. “Through careful, joint-sanctioned modeling, we determined that we could not sustain further active component cuts without jeopardizing the collective ability of the total force to support our nation’s strategic interests,” Schwartz said. As the Air Force rebalances, it will leverage its total force integration efforts by increasing the number of associations between the active duty and Reserve components, thereby enhancing all aspects of mission readiness and effectiveness, he said. “Our (total force integration) associations provide us with the ability to utilize highly experienced Reserve component Airmen in helping to accelerate the maturity of their active component counterparts quicker,” Schwartz said, citing one example of how such associations benefit the force. When these associations are operated properly, total force integration will create efficiencies for the Air Force, saving in operational and overhead costs across the board, the general said. “Be assured that, as a total force, we are united in a common cause to provide more effective and efficient air power, including military support to domestic contingencies and civil authorities,” Schwartz said.

stablishing esprit de corps, providing support to military families and promoting a positive outlook are just a few reasons why family readiness groups are critical to Soldiers, families and military organizations. Members of family readiness groups from around the 18th Military Police Brigade held a forum May 22 and 23 in several locations in the KMC to talk about day-to-day issues they face as FRG leaders. “The forum was held to bring all the FRG leaders together to share experiences and give a wider range of ideas,” said Katrina Sieber, 709th MP Battalion’s family readiness support assistant. The forum was also an introduction to new leaders, who discussed topics such as command sponsorship, fund-
raising and recruiting new volunteers. “FRG leaders brought examples of the different packets to help out new spouses and website addresses to send incoming Soldiers before permanent change of station,” Sieber said. Additionally, during the forum the FRG members had the opportunity to take a tour of Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and the Ramstein Passenger Terminal and even tackled obstacles at a local high ropes course. “The ropes course was amazing,” said Sandy Gurney, the 615th MP Company FRG leader. “Everybody got out there and had a great time. Everyone came together and encouraged each other,” said Janine Smith, the 95th MP Bn., FRSA. But Gurney said the tours were also great. “I learned a great deal at the passenger terminal,” she said. “Learning how things work and each process will help tremendously when giving information to new spouses.” FRGs foster resilient families while

providing accurate command information and continuously discovers ways to effectively use community recourses. Promoting confidence, helping families cope with deployments and a great support network for families is an imperative feature of a great FRG program. “The FRG is a critical asset in
a unit, as they keep Soldiers and family members informed during peacetime and crisis situations,” said Jonathan Doyle, the deputy commander of the 18th MP Bde. “Having a strong FRG with a dynamic leader who ties in to the company commander and senior enlisted adviser is critical to a fully functioning organization.”
10th AAMDC Soldiers earn coveted Space Badge by Staff Sgt. John Zumer 10th AAMDC Public Affairs
“One Team, One Fight” is an often-heard phrase signifying the need to pull together and accomplish a mission. For nine Soldiers of the Kaiserslautern-based 10th Army Air Missile Defense Command, it represents an opportunity to work with their U.S. Air Force counterparts in providing a safer and more efficient battle space. Air Force Lt. Col. John Taylor, the acting director of space for U.S. Army Europe and Africa Command, spoke at a Rhine Ordnance Barracks ceremony recognizing the nine Soldiers awarded with the “Space Badge.” For Taylor, the occasion represented a chance to witness firsthand the good things possible when different military branches work together. “It’s an acknowledgement that space is inherently global and inherently joint,” he said. Air Force and Army officials approved the establishment of the Air Force Space Badge as a joint Air Force
and Army badge in February 2011, at which time the term “Air Force” was dropped from the badge’s official name. Soldiers are eligible for the award by attending Air Force or Army space or satellite systems courses, provided they also have 12 months (for active Army) or 24 months (for Army Reserve and Army National Guard) experience in a space billet. To date, more than 1,000 Space Badges have been awarded to Soldiers. Regardless of the changes to the name, however, the significance of the award for those wearing it is readily apparent to others, Taylor said. “People will look at that badge with a higher level of respect,” he said. U.S. Army Sgt. Bryan Hanover, a radar sensor manager with the 5-7 Air Defense Artillery, 10th AAMDC, was grateful for the opportunity to attend the instruction, which was provided at the Warrior Preparation Center near Kaiserslautern. “It was fast moving and challenging, but extremely
fun,” said Hanover, who helps man a radar system providing early warning from ballistic missile attacks against U.S. forces, interests and allies in Germany and Europe. Hanover added that while much data was introduced at the beginning, the material quickly blended with other lessons, allowing for a better understanding of battle space mission and capabilities. Those new skills include a greater knowledge of the procedures, equipment and computer programs used in operating and control-
ling today’s battle space. And in an ever-changing world with constantly evolving threats, Soldiers entrusted with battle space responsibilities can’t afford to fall behind the times or fail to upgrade their skills with available opportunities like the Space Badge. For Hanover and his fellow Soldiers in the 10th AAMDC, it all comes with the territory of constantly striving to enhance their combat, equipment and training readiness. “This course played a vital role in expanding our
vast knowledge of the missile defense and space communities. As sensor managers we’re able to see a much broader picture of our defense structure and strategy,” he said. Taylor agreed, being quick to add that while the Space Badge is a tremendous honor for those who receive and wear it, the reasoning behind it is to ensure the lives and safety of fellow citizens and comrades in arms. “Ultimately, the customers we serve are those put in harm’s way,” Taylor said.

War and peace: A historical perspective by Dr. Silvano Wueschner 86th Airlift Wing historian In November 1989 when the Berlin Wall and the Warsaw Pact came crashing down, many people expected a peace dividend. I was reminded of that yearning for peace some years ago when I conducted a seminar for young Airmen at Balad. One of the participants raised her hand and asked a question that sounded simple enough, but was far more difficult to answer than she could have imagined. The question was, “Will there be peace in Iraq if the U.S. leaves the country right now?” The implication was that our presence somehow kept conflict alive. A simple answer was not possible. It required the kind of in depth discussion to which university history departments have dedicated semester length courses. Part of that discussion has to be an explicit acknowledgement that the military does not make foreign policy, but is used as part of policy implementation. The reality is that the history of the world has been marked by episodic flare-ups and degeneration separated by varying periods of relative peace and human progress. The boundary lines between these periods are not always easy to discern. If one takes a look at modern European history, the period since the Renaissance, for example, one sees three great eras of new ideas and rising forces, each of which culminated in long wars and turmoil. The first of these progressive interludes ended with the outbreak of the Thirty Years’ War (1618 to 1648). The second period of peace came to an end with the 40 years of war beginning with the American and French revolutions (ca. 1774 to 1815). The nominal period of peace that followed culminated in worldwide conflicts beginning with the First World War, which still plague us today. Given the alternating currents of conflict and peace, it is natural to think about the forces that give
rise to war and peace. One can begin the discussion by considering the role of ideological differences in spawning conflict. Ideology is a collocation of an intricate mix of religious, social, economic, political, artistic and scientific factors. One of these factors, economics, is frequently referred to in the context of economic determinism. Some might argue that while this factor has not proven to be an absolute in history, it has had an impact. The point is that most people want to live above the bare subsistence level, a desire that has given rise to economic forces and pressures that culminate in hostilities. Another cause of conflict is nationalism, which grows out of language, religion, folklore, traditions, literature, art, music, beliefs, habits, modes of expression, hates, fears, ideals and loyalties. Nationalism expresses itself in patriotism, which is derived from the fundamentals of love of family, love of country, and pride in racial or ethnic accomplishments. In the extreme, nationalism threatens peace because it contains ambition for power and glory, which can easily expand into dangerous forms, such as the exploitation of the resources and foreign trade of other peoples or in aggression that spawns imperialism. Imperialism is one of the larger moving forces in history and means nothing less than the movement of a nation beyond its political borders. It is part cause and part effect. It comes from excessive nationalism, militarism, thirst for power and economic pressures. All feed on one another. Imperialism can be placed in to three categories. The first is the variety where expansion, settlement and development takes place in sparsely populated areas. The second involves the movement of one people into areas of what the conquering nation terms uncivilized people incapable of selfgovernment. The third is the sheer conquest of a constituted nation by another. The last two types of imperialism have one purpose, and that is to achieve
superior living conditions by exploiting other people and their resources As noted above, militarism plays a role in imperialism. Sociologists might propose that man is a combative being, that we love to compete, and that we learn to hate quite easily. Humans are also egocentric and in the mass we become even more egocentric. Beliefs in superiority are quickly transformed into arrogance, which can easily stimulate aggression. Lastly, there are the factors of fear, hate and revenge. These play a large part in the causes of war. The greatest of these is fear. Hate and revenge more often than not spring from fear. Fear of invasion, starvation, blockade in war, economic disadvantage. As for hate, this frequently stems from feelings of having been wronged, from rivalries or from oppression. Fear and hate culminate in seeking to revenge past injustices, past defeats all of which propel one toward violence. These emotions lie deep in the recesses of a people’s consciousness. Wrongs have been shown to live on for centuries in the minds of a people and traditional age old hates are frequently burned into their souls. Against all of these aggressive forces stands the will to peace. War kills or maims the best of a people and brings the deepest of sorrows to every home. It brings poverty and moral degeneration and brings these to victor and vanquished alike. Historians understand that these forces have shaped the history of the world. Yet, historians also focus on the role of individual actors in shaping history. When a crisis based on one of the aforementioned factors is precipitated by one or more individuals, statesmen seek to deal with it, as was the case with Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait. When they are able to diffuse the crisis, the result is peace. When they are not, it means war or, at the very least, the road to war.
US Army MPs warn of summertime scams by Robert Szostek U.S. Army Europe Office of the Provost Marshal Public Affairs MANNHEIM, Germany — Motorists can run into bad luck on the road and become legitimate candidates for charity. Unfortunately, others are simply up to no good, warn officials at the U.S. Army Europe Office of the Provost Marshal. “With the onset of summer, we again expect to see cases of people trying to defraud Americans while traveling in Europe,” said Patrick MacKenzie, USAREUR OPM law enforcement chief. Officials said one type of common scam involves someone in a vehicle flagging down other vehicles to get money by falsely claiming to need help. This kind of approach often
happens close to a barracks gate, at a highway rest stop or on a road outside a town where vehicles must move slowly. Sometimes, the scammers offer drivers what appears to be gold jewelry as collateral so they can pay a loan back later, OPM officials said, but the rings and chains usually turn out to be worthless brass imitations. OPM experts are warning of a second scam that involves a con artist stopping an intended victim and claiming to have run out of money at a trade fair. The scammer then offers to sell the victim his expensive goods — often jackets or coats — at a huge discount so he can buy gas to get home. But the fancy, brand-name articles are nothing but cheap fakes. To avoid being scammed, MacKenzie recommends members of
the U.S. forces community in Europe keep these tips in mind: • Beware of distractions if you are in your car alone. Someone talking to you on the driver’s side of the car could be trying to divert your attention while a buddy steals your purse or wallet from the other side. • Offers that sound too good to be true usually are. Articles with fancy brand names and gold jewelry are most likely cheap imitations. • Always consider the relationship between the trouble a person claims he is in and what he is asking for. People in real need rarely ask for more than what is absolutely necessary. • Never give large amounts of money to anyone on the road. The most anyone should need is enough to fill a tank with gas. Officials also noted that the German
automobile association, ADAC, reports that travelers should also be aware that in some regions gangs may be involved in trying to scam motorists on main highways. The crooks, they say, generally drive large, dark sedans and try to get drivers to stop with hand gestures, flashing lights or a raised gas container. When their victim stops, they demand financial help for their families or try to sell fake jewelry. If the victim gives up little or no cash, the solicitation can turn into a robbery. ADAC advises drivers who encounter such situations to not stop, but continue driving. MacKenzie also advised that anyone approached in this manner write down the person’s license plate number and contact the nearest military or civil police station.

Elementary students ‘bug-out’ from school by Airman 1st Class Trevor Rhynes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Students attending Ramstein Elementary School got to end the school year with a sports day themed “bug-out” June 8. The bug-out is held annually prior to summer break and gives students a chance to end school the right way by participating in various fun events throughout the day. “We spent a lot of time planning this event. We have 950 kids that we had to come up with a schedule for so they could participate in all 22 stations,” said Amanda Speraw, Ramstein Elementary School physical education teacher. “We couldn’t have done this without the more than 150 vol-
unteers who showed up. That was huge getting the volunteers out to work with the kids.” Volunteers for this event came from all over Ramstein; security forces, firefighters and various squadrons around base made up those who were willing to help. “I came out today because I love working with children,” said Airman 1st Class Jamie Minnish, 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron C-130J crew chief. “This was a good opportunity for me to meet new people and see the children having fun competing or working together, depending on the event.” For Speraw, getting her students active for an entire day was her primary task. “Kids don’t get out enough as it is because the weather here is so unpredictable,” Speraw said. “It was important to me
to get them out to do physical activity, instead of watching movies or playing on the computer.” The day was filled with events done in gym class from throughout the year. “Every station out there today were things we do in gym class. All of the relays we did, the ring toss, etc. we did in the gym,” Speraw said. “We brought everything they learned throughout the year and put it together, kind of like a review for the students.” At the end of the day, Speraw said the students were having fun and getting through all the events in a timely manner. “I think getting everyone through the different stations while having as much fun as possible made the bug-out a success,” Speraw said.

What men should know about screening for prostate cancer by Wayne Combs U.S. Army Public Health Command Did you know the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force does not recommend prostate cancer screening for all men? If you don’t know the latest information about prostate cancer screening, you are not alone. Many men don’t. This article will help you understand more about the latest information on prostate cancer screening and help you discuss this issue with your healthcare provider. What are the latest recommendations for prostate cancer screening? According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there is currently no scientific agreement on the best ways to prevent prostate cancer and not enough supporting evidence to recommend screening in all men. The USPSTF has concluded that the current medical evidence is insufficient to compare the benefits and harms of prostate cancer screening in men younger than age 75 years. The
USPSTF also recommends against screening for prostate cancer in men age 75 years or older. What is prostate cancer? Prostate cancer is made up of cells that do not grow normally. The cells divide and create new cells that the body does not need, forming a mass of tissue called a tumor. These abnormal cells can sometimes spread to other parts of the body, multiply and cause death. What causes prostate cancer? As with many types of cancers, medical experts do not know what causes prostate cancer. They are studying several possible causes. Who is at increased risk for prostate cancer? While all men are at risk for prostate cancer, some factors increase risk: Family history — Men with a father or brother who has had prostate cancer are at greater risk of developing it themselves.
Race — Prostate cancer is more common in some racial and ethnic groups than in others, but medical experts do not know why. Prostate cancer is more common in AfricanAmerican men than in white men. And, African-American men with prostate cancer are more likely to die from the disease than white men. It is less common in Hispanic, Asian, Pacific Islander and Native American men than in white men. Age — The prevalence of prostate cancer increases rapidly after age 40. Can prostate cancer be prevented? Medical experts do not know how to prevent prostate cancer. But they are studying many factors. They do know that not smoking, maintaining a healthy diet, staying physically active and seeing your doctor regularly contribute to overall good health. What does “screening” mean? Screening means looking for signs of disease in people who have no
symptoms. So screening for prostate cancer is looking for early-stage disease. The main screening tools for prostate cancer are the digital rectal examination and the prostate specific antigen blood test. However, the DRE and PSA test cannot tell if you have cancer; they can only suggest the need for further tests. Many factors such as age, race, certain medical procedures, an enlarged prostate or a prostate infection can affect PSA levels. Because of the uncertainty about prostate cancer screening, the CDC recommends that men discuss prostate screening with their healthcare provider. Every man needs balanced information on the pros and cons of prostate cancer to help him make an informed decision about screening. For more information on prostate cancer, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: • www.cdc.gov/cancer/prostate/ informed_decision_making.htm. • /www.cdc.gov/cancer/prostate/ pdf/prosguide.pdf.

free cyber course. “I created HACKINT and this course due to the fact that even basic cyber classes can cost thousands of dollars. While those classes are worthwhile there is still a need for local talent to come together to crowd source free education.” The HACKINT course educated a group of 10 members from five different squadrons around Ramstein. Students began the course with a lengthy discussion on ethics and the legality of hacking. From there they learned how to install and configure common hacking tools, and by the end of the class they were remotely accessing secured Windows-based virtual machines, cracking passwords and taking screenshots of the accessed computers. “The class demon-
strated how easily hackers can compromise a networked system, solidifying the importance of network defense,” said Senior Master Sgt. Gillie B. Zamora, a student who took the course. “I would recommend this class for anyone who is interested in getting some exposure to the world of cyber.” When asked about the future of the class, Lee added, “I was really impressed with the feedback from the students and how well they did given that it was the first time the class was offered. I plan to offer this and other classes on a continued basis and challenge others to get involved in teaching as well. I also want to thank AFCEA Chapter 158 and its members for all of their support as

18th Eng. Bde. returns from deployment Story and photo by Mike Bowers 21st TSC Public Affairs SCHWETZINGEN, Germany — Soldiers of the 18th Engineer Brigade, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, returned home to ear-piercing cheers from poster-waving family members June 8 during the welcome home ceremony held here in the Tompkins Barracks gymnasium. The headquarters element returned after a yearlong deployment to Afghanistan where it coordinated and provided command and control to each of its six subordinate battalions. “We’re thrilled. It’s great to be done with the mission, and it’s great to be back in Germany,” said Col. Paul M. Paolozzi, commander of the 18th Eng. Bde. Paolozzi said that of the more than 4,000 Soldiers within the brigade, it was only the headquarters that returned. Paolozzi said the unit went well beyond accomplishing their deployment goals. “We believe that we had a certain set where the brigade was, or what it was, as we arrived in Afghanistan. We significantly changed that while we were there,” he said. “We moved the brigade headquarters to a place where future brigades can have a better operational reach. We also made sure that all engineer efforts are coordinated and synchronized through the brigade headquarters for each one of the battalions.” While deployed, the unit’s job involved work-
ing across Afghanistan, interacting with the Afghan National Army and performing route clearance and construction. Part of the mission was to work with the partnership for the Afghan Army and to make sure that they’re strong and capable for the future, Paolozzi said. After landing at Ramstein, the Soldiers were bused to Schwetzingen where family members and other well wishers had gathered. “It was probably the longest hour bus ride I’ve had in a while. Now that I’m here, I’m glad it’s over,” said Spc. Michael Janssen, a signal support system specialist. “It was a good deployment. Everybody did what they were supposed to and the mission was successful.” Staff Sgt. Dexter Walter, geospatial section, said he was glad to be back with his family, as he stood clutching his 2-year old daughter, Lillian, with his wife, Paris, at his side. “I’m thankful to get back safe, which was the focal point the whole time,” Walter said. “My priority now is dinner with the family and getting ready for a permanent change of station move to Hawaii.” Spcs. Lee Easton and Paul Ulmer, assigned to the brigade’s military intelligence section, were both looking forward to taking a shower and wearing civilian clothes. “It feels great and a relief to be back,” Easton said “It seems pretty surreal and going to take a while to settle in.” “Shower, sleep and get out of this,” said Ulmer pointing to his uniform. “It’s been a while since

we’ve had a shower and good night’s sleep.” Sgt. Maj. Perry Ledbetter, supply sergeant major, said the unit did more than accomplish the mission. “We went much beyond to make sure everything was set up for the new unit that came and took over,” Ledbetter said. “It feels great to be back. My goal is to travel, see more of Germany and Europe while enjoying the family and catch up.” “I think for the unit, it’s quick rest and recuperation, and taking some time to be with their families and enjoy just the reintegration schedule,” Paolozzi said. “And then I think everyone’s got their own individual plans and just taking some leave time and then, quickly after that, we will be moving the brigade headquarters to Schweinfurt, Germany.”
Facility excellence keeps bases clean by Airman 1st Class Trevor Rhynes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Every two weeks, Airmen from various groups on Ramstein participate in facility excellence. These Airmen pick up trash and complete additional duties asked of them. “FE teams are made up of volunteers and those who are on additional duty to participate in cleaning Ramstein, Landstuhl, Vogelweh, Vogelweh Housing and Kapaun,” said Tech. Sgt. Joseph Voll, NCOIC of facility excellence. “Teams work from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and cover the entire installation.” Airmen are augmented to fulfill FE requirements. “Due to Ramstein’s fast mission, units aren’t able to take care of the areas around their buildings,” Voll said. “Groups provide a certain percentage of their unit to my team to clean the base. If we didn’t do this job, there would be quite a bit of trash on the installations.” Completing this duty gives mem-
bers of the facility excellence team the opportunity to take a break from their normal responsibilities. “This gives us the opportunity to get away from the same routine that comes with being in your squadron day in and day out,” said Airman 1st Class Dallas Arceneaux, 1st Combat Communications Squadron tactical network operations technician. “We also get to meet people we may not normally have the chance to meet.” FE Airmen could also be called upon to fill other roles as well. “Besides just picking up trash, Airmen on FE take care of the grounds, so things like pulling weeds, taking care of trees or any support the base needs can be augmented from me through my chain,” Voll said. For Arceneaux, completing his rotation of FE offers a sense of achievement. “We’re doing our part to keep the base clean,” he said. “We spend a lot of time making sure it looks good, so it makes us feel better about being here.”

Airmen raise money for CrossFit for Hope by Tech. Sgt. Chad Thompson 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
C
rossFit for Hope is a national fundraiser that brings together the efforts of more than 900 CrossFit affiliated gyms to raise money in support of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. This year’s goal was to raise $1.7 million — the cost to operate the center for one day. St. Jude’s mission is to find cures for children with cancer and other deadly diseases through research and treatment. As part of this fundraiser, 17 members of CrossFit Rage Cage came together June 9 to help reach the overall goal. “The 435th Security Forces Squadron’s goal was to raise $500 and the men and women of CrossFit Rage Cage smashed that by raising over $1,200 to help reach the larger goal,” said Tech. Sgt. Nicholas Siburt, 435th Security Forces Squadron NCOIC of contingency communications. The workout named “Hope” consisted of three rounds of the following: Burpees, 75-pound power snatch, box jump with a 24-inch box, 75-pound thruster and chest-to-bar pull-ups. In this workout each person moved from one of the five stations after a minute, Siburt said. “This was a five-minute round from which a oneminute break was allowed before starting the next round,” he said. “On the call of ‘rotate,’ the athletes moved to the next station and immediately began the exercise to ensure (a) good score.
