Saber Strike unites 10 countries Story and photo by Senior Airman Jonathan Stefanko 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
ADAZI TRAINING AREA, Latvia — Approximately 4,700 service members from 10 countries, including the United States, came together for the kick-off ceremony for Saber Strike June 9 at the Adazi training area in Latvia. Saber Strike is a long-standing, multilateral security cooperation exercise conducted at locations throughout the Baltic region. This year’s objective is to facilitate cooperation among the U.S., Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia by improving joint operational capability in a range of missions as well as prepare the participating nations and units to support multilateral contingency operations. A U.S. Army Europe-led exercise, Saber Strike 2014 is also supported by joint and total force service members from the U.S. Air Force and the Army and Air National Guards. See SABER STRIKE, Page 3

Lt. Gen. Darryl Roberson assumed command of 3rd Air Force during a ceremony June 11 on Ramstein. Gen. Frank Gorenc, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa commander, presided over the ceremony and expressed appreciation for the hard work and dedication the Airmen of 3rd Air Force displayed over the past two years.
“They have enabled over 24,000 combat hours, which has allowed the command to project airpower for six combatant commands over 104 countries, proving that we are forward, we are ready and we are ready now,” Gorenc said. Gorenc went on to welcome Roberson and his family to the command position. “We turn the page on yet another chapter in the history of this outstanding unit,” Gorenc said. “The Air Force has another fantastic leader in the bullpen, and we are excited
to have General Roberson as the commander. I am completely confident you and Cheryl will lead 3rd Air Force to new heights.” Roberson comes to 3rd Air Force from his previous assignment as the vice director of operations on the joint staff in Washington, D.C. However, this is not his first time in Europe. Roberson was previously the 52nd Fighter Wing commander at Spangdahlem Air Base from 2006 to 2008. But his first experiSee COMMAND, Page 5

Check it or wreck it by Capt. Larry Cornelio 786th Civil Engineer Squadron readiness and emergency management flight commander No matter what my deployed military mission, I conduct the same checklist the night prior. Every single time. I clean my rifle and pistol and conduct my pre-combat checks, pre-combat inspections and function tests. I also look over my body armor and gear from head to toe and go through my checklist. The night prior to a day of riding my motorcycle, I have ceremonial-like checklists to ensure my equipment and clothing are prepared, because just like any military mission, I have to ensure all my riding equipment and gear are in good working condition as these items are needed for my safety and protection. To inspect my other equipment, i.e. my motorcycle, I use the acronym “T-CLOCS” - tires (and wheels), controls, lights (and electrics), oils (and other fluids), chassis and stand. Tires (and wheels): Ensure tire condition, tread depth and air pressure are in good order.
Inspect wheels for proper structural integrity. Ensure both front and rear brakes operate correctly. Controls: Ensure handlebars are straight, free moving and secured. Ensure cabling and hoses are secured and free of tears. Ensure the throttle operates properly, moves freely and returns to its starting position when released. Lights (and electrics): Ensure lights operate correctly. This includes headlights, brake lights and turn signals. Additionally, ensure all electric components work properly, including the battery, switches and wiring. Lastly, ensure all mirrors, lenses and reflectors are in good working condition. Oil (and other fluids): Ensure oil levels are correct. Inspect the bike for any leaks. Additionally, inspect clutch and brake hydraulic fluids to ensure they are at proper levels.
Stands: Ensure the stand is in good working condition. Once I complete my equipment checklist, I inspect my personal protective equipment. Similar to my pre-mission checklist, I use the mantra “No skin (exposed) from head to toe.” Head: Wear a DOT-compliant (or EU equivalent) helmet. Ensure the helmet provides a clear and unobtrusive view, fastens securely and permits air to pass through to reduce fogging. Upper body: Wear a long-sleeve shirt or jacket that fits snugly enough to keep from flapping in the wind yet loose enough to provide air circulation. Leather jackets (often offered with body armor stitched into the lining) offer the most protection. Gloves: Gloves allow better grip and help protect your hands in a crash.
Chassis: Ensure the frame, suspension, chain or belt, and fasteners are secured and are in good working condition.
Lower body: Wear pants that fit similar to See checklist, Page 5
After the Battle: The return home COMMENTARY
by Senior Airman Chris Willis 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Editor’s Note: This is the sixth in a six-part series about medical response capabilities for deployed service members from start to finish and the various milestones for care and transportation of combat-wounded troops throughout Afghanistan. I have spent more than a year telling the story of our nation’s wounded warriors as I followed their transport from the mountains of Afghanistan to their medical care at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany. Unfortunately, concluding this series will never end what our troops have to endure in the face of war, but this last entry will give me a chance to finish a chapter in my life. It was my first Sunday back from a recent deployment when I unknowingly woke up in the middle of the night and proceeded downstairs. My wife followed me and observed I looked lost, and then I began to crawl on the ground calling out for

Later that week, I left to check into a hotel room hoping to get past what had frightened my wife. I then went off the grid and no one was able to reach me. My supervisor eventually found me wandering lost in a nearby city carrying an almost empty suitcase; I had been missing for days. At this point, my leadership decided it was essential I met with mental health and get a full assessment. That assessment helped me realize my deployment had taken a great toll on me mentally and led to me getting treatment that most likely saved my life. DEP members experience a day to remember Story and photo by Airman Larissa Greatwood 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs No two military careers are identical. Everyone has different experiences that make their path unique. Though they’re all different, each one begins the same way. Whether it’s a commissioning ceremony or the delayed entry program, military careers begin with a traditional swear-in and reciting the oath of enlistment or oath of office. Ramstein’s soon-to-be newest Airmen participated in an hour-long event that provided them with more than they were expecting. The Ramstein recruiters put together a special event; former military training instructors stationed here volunteered their time to give the recruits an interactive presentation. The recruits stood in formation as the military training instructors came out in full force. With their intimidating statures, they didn’t hesitate to find the first recruit who dared to flinch. Though the display may have been rough for some, this opportunity will better prepare them for basic training. “The event today made me feel more confident, because I now have a better idea of how the (military training instructors) will be and the things they might say,” said Daniel Rinard, delayed entry program member. Though the event was stressful for some of the saber strike, from Page 1 “Saber Strike will prove invaluable to the interoperability as we move toward a post international security assistance force environment,” said U.S. Army Reserve Maj. Gen. Mark T. McQueen, deputy chief of staff of mobilization and reserve affairs. “Despite the uncertainty of the world, I am certain of one thing, and that is that the United States of America will continue to stand in the defense of freedom and will maintain our commitment to our partners in the face of tyranny.” Participating countries include the Baltic nations of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, as well as Canada, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Poland, the United Kingdom and the U.S. The diverse allied nations gathered together with the goal to improve synchronized and prepared responses to regional security threats and missions. “It is my pleasure to welcome everyone participating in Saber Strike 2014,” said Raimonds Vejonis, minister of defense to the Republic of Latvia. “The exercise has proved to be an excellent

operational tool to its allies and is important to conduct with the current security situation.” Vejonis expressed appreciation for the “cooperation, contribution and willingness to strengthen and boost training activities in the region.” The various exercises will focus on command and control, as well as interoperability with regional partners, and will be comprised of host nation-supported command post, computer assisted and situational training exercises. The U.S. Air Force will also play a role by providing close air support to partner nation ground forces and demonstrating air deployment of forces and equipment.
“As we stand shoulder to shoulder I am personally honored to serve with you in the defense of our nations,” McQueen said. “These are difficult and dynamic times, but I am confident that we will continue to demonstrate to the world that we are a shining example of what the best of alliances and partnerships can look like. I thank you for the investment of your time and your energy and all that you have done to be here, and I personally look forward to working with all of you.” By looking forward the U.S. and its allies ensure they are ready to provide capabilities and execute missions in support of combatant commands and achieve

upper body clothing. Again, leather with body armor provides the most protection. Shoes: Wear over-the-ankle shoes that provide ankle stability. Tuck in laces so they don’t catch on your motorcycle. Although leathers, boots and gloves seem to be more appropriate attire for an autumn or winter’s days, it’s imperative for riders to remember one thing: When you get on a bike, you don’t dress for the weather. You dress for the fall. I think of my riding gear the same as my military gear — would I ever leave the wire without my helmet and body armor? Even if it’s 130 degrees? No. For every mission, whether a military operation or riding adventure, I never leave home without ensuring my equipment is fully functional and operating correctly and I’m wearing the right gear. Once everything is prepared and in order, I am able to start my adventure. Keep it rubber side down!

‘Superstar’ MP battalion cases colors Story and photo by Capt. Amanda Kehrrington 21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs With the sun lingering over the formations, the Soldiers of the 95th Military Police Battalion, 18th Military Police Brigade, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, stood together in formation for the last time during an inactivation ceremony June 10 at Daenner Kaserne. This is not the first time the “Superstar Battalion” received orders to inactivate. The battalion was first activated two months after the Germans surrendered to Allied forces in July 1945 in Lenggries, Germany, during the waning days of World War II. One year later, the unit was ordered to inactivate. A few short years later in 1950, the battalion was called upon again to activate its troops, this time in support of the Korean conflict. After the armistice ending the Korean conflict was signed in 1953, the battalion inactivated a second time. Yet the battalion’s remarkable history did not end with that second inactivation. A decade later, the “Superstars” reactivated for service in the Vietnam War. As U.S. involvement in Vietnam drew to a close, the battalion inactivated again, this time in 1972. A year later, the battalion reactivated again in Mannheim, Germany. “The 95th MP Bn. has been called back to service on three separate occasions in our nation’s time of need,” said Lt. Col. James Walker, 95th MP Bn. commander. “This is a testament to the impact and the success that this battalion has always provided to our Army.” The battalion cased its colors to signify the completion of a successful mission. This is the final act by the commander on behalf of the Soldiers. Simultaneously, the Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 95th MP Bn.,
Lt. Col. James H. Walker (left), 95th Military Police Battalion commander, and Command Sgt. Maj. James W. Breckinridge, 95th MP Bn. senior enlisted adviser, case the colors of the 95th MP Bn. during an inactivation ceremony June 10.
and the 230th MP Company cased its colors. The colors were passed among organizational leaders to signify the Soldiers’ discipline and dedication and in recognition of a job well done. The colors finally rested in the hands of Command Sgt. Maj. Henry Stearns, 18th MP Bde. senior enlisted adviser, bestowing upon him the responsibility to protect and preserve until they are called upon again. “Hold your head high; you are part of a distinguished history. We have seen colors come and go, and I am quite sure we will see the 95th reactivate sometime in the future,” said Col. Zane Jones, 18th MP Bde. commander, during the inactivation ceremony. “Although we are casing these colors today, the history, the stories, the awesome contributions of thousands and thousands of Soldiers and family members means everything, and the roar of the 95th MP Bn. will not be silenced.”

ence in Europe was in 1985 when he was assigned to Ramstein flying F-4 Phantoms in the 526th Tactical Fighter Squadron. He then flew the same plane at Spangdahlem in the 480th Tactical Fighter Squadron. “It is a great honor and pleasure to take command of 3rd Air Force,” Roberson said. “Our mission is clear: to be ready now, to answer the call for airpower.” The general said the 3rd AF needs to be ready to direct assigned air forces and build partnership capacity with coalition partners. He also spoke of the challenges the Air Force is facing in the current austere fiscal environment. “Together with our allies and partners, our friends, there is no challenge that is going to be presented to 3rd Air Force that we won’t overcome,” he said.

ing aircraft are mission-ready, to Airmen patrolling the surrounding area outside of the airfield looking for possible threats. Another requirement of my job was to respond to real-world events that called for specialized documentation. Two missions stand out above the rest: an F-16 Fighting Falcon mountain mission and a Boeing 747 airliner mass causality. Early Thursday morning I received a call, an F-16 aircraft went down in the north eastern mountain range of Afghanistan. Within hours, our teams of first responders were in helicopters on our way to the crash site. In full battle gear and fully armed, we hiked to the crash site, only stopping to document parts of the aircraft and the pilot’s remains scattered across the mountain. After a long morning of hiking, we came to a steep ledge where we found the downed pilot. We were all exhausted from the hike, but there was a great sense of urgency to get the body off that mountain. Almost everyone aided in carrying his body up the mountain where he could be lifted and transported to the closest airfield. As I watched the helicop-
Kaiserslautern American ter fly off with the pilot’s remains, I felt an overwhelming sense of sadness but also a great sense of pride. We accomplished our mission to find the downed pilot and got him home. Three weeks later, I was driving on the perimeter road inside Bagram when I witnessed a 747 airliner fall out of the sky. I instantly knew this was going to be a mass casualty. The aircraft appeared to be doing a combat takeoff when it froze in midair. As it hit the ground all the birds in the surrounding area scattered and the plume of smoke from the explosion looked like something out of a ‘50s nuclear training video. I went straight into alertphoto-responder mode and drove toward the crash. After arriving at the site, I noticed everything was either burnt or still on fire, and the sky was turning black. Fighting through the smoke, I split my time between documenting the crash and supporting the efforts to recover the passengers. I was sure there weren’t going to be any survivors, but the goal was to get to the passengers before they were engulfed by flames. The smell of burning metal and rubber tires still lingers, as well as the dark clouds only parting to let in hail and
freezing cold rain. Many first responders had to be medically evacuated due to the extreme weather conditions. A month after being involved with the two severe aircraft accidents I was on a C-17 Globemaster III on my way home. I remember being tremendously nervous throughout the flight. As we arrived at the final destination, Ramstein Air Base, everything started to feel surreal. My family, including my baby girl, who was born while I was gone, were there waiting for me outside the terminal. I was finally home, but I still did not feel like I truly left Afghanistan. As I was getting settled to the home life, I started to feel depressed and anxious. I was having problems sleeping and I was distancing myself from my family. I just wanted to be alone. After a few sessions with mental health, it was confirmed I had post-traumatic stress disorder. At first, I didn’t understand how that was possible since I was never physically wounded and never engaged in a bloody battle. My mental health provider told me the events that happened over my deployment could have taken a toll on anyone. Dragging bodies
Page 9 that were either burned or in pieces would have a lasting impression on most people. This was a dark time for me, but I wasn’t ready to give up. I’m still on the road to recovery a year after returning home. With help from my medical providers, family, friends and co-workers I am able to talk about my experi-
ences and overcome them one day at a time. I wish I could say that I am back to normal, but there will always be a piece of me left behind. I have decided to keep living life to its full potential, not only for myself and my loved ones, but for my military brothers and sisters who never made it home.

Take care, be aware by Airman Larissa Greatwood 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
Cancer awareness is a widely advertised topic and though it’s known to change lives, sometimes prevention is not typically the first thing on a person’s mind. For members of the military, resiliency is crucial. Health is a top priority because if a military member is not healthy, they are not performing at their best potential. Military members have busy schedules and often may not take the time out of their day to make their own health a main priority. Self-examinations are important, as they are usually the first sign of possible cancer. Maj. Tonya
Mial, 86th Medical Group health care integrator, said knowing what your body feels like when you’re healthy will help you with early detection. “We encourage women over the age of 50 to have their mammograms, and we encourage women at the age of 21 to have their cervical cancer screenings, and women and men over the age of 50 to have their colorectal screenings,” Mial said. “Just because we are tracking and monitoring those three doesn’t mean the others aren’t as important and aren’t being tracked as they develop.” It is often said how important it is to have these check-ups, but unfortunately for some, it doesn’t become relevant until it’s too late. Taking the
time out of the day to get a screening could save that person’s life. According to www.news.yale.edu, an estimated half a million cancers were prevented by colorectal cancer screening in the U.S. from 1976 to 2009. There are many ways to schedule a screening. Patients can self-refer or have their primary care provider give them a referral. MiCare is a way to speak to a doctor in confidentiality instead of relaying the message through the appointment line. “On MiCare, a patient can send a personal message to their provider,” Mial said. “We encourage patients to use their personal email because they may not always have access to a gov-
ernment computer during an emergency. This way, for example, if the patient ends up in the hospital while they are on leave in another country, they have a way to contact their provider.” Appointments can be booked through www.tricareonline.com as well as through the appointment line at 479-2273. For breast cancer screenings, call the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center mammography department at 590-6331. Colorectal cancer screenings can be scheduled through LRMC’s automated system. Follow the prompts to the gastroenterology clinic at 590-5762. For cervical cancer screenings, schedule with your primary care provider.

AF to implement new feedback process July 1 by Debbie Gildea Air Force Personnel Center Public Affairs JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIORANDOLPH, Texas — In a recent message to Airmen, Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Welsh III and Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force James Cody announced plans to begin implementing a more comprehensive Air Force evaluation system for officers and enlisted members. The first step in the process will be the July 1 implementation of the Airman Comprehensive Assessment Worksheet performance feedback tool, Air Force officials said in a June 9 release. The ACA Worksheet, tested in 2012 by 45,000 Airmen, introduces a tool and a process designed to improve communication between supervisors and subordinates while reminding Airmen of the importance of Air Force core values and the role they play in accomplishing the mission, said Will Brown the Air Force Personnel Center Evaluation and Recognition Programs Branch Chief Will Brown. Of significance, the ACA form and process require Airmen to assess themselves prior to a face-to-face feedback session with their supervisor. “This gives Airmen the opportunity to reflect on their own knowledge and awareness of our responsibility, accountability, and our core values, and enables them to identify areas where they need more information and education,” Brown said.
“An Airman will complete the selfassessment portion of the worksheet and provide it to the supervisor two or three days before the feedback session, which gives the supervisor time to tailor the session to that Airman’s specific needs.” To be effective, however, Brown believes all Airmen must follow the process and use the form as it is intended to be used. “During the test phase, Airmen who used the form and process as intended saw notable improvement in communication, morale and productivity,” Brown said. “Clearly, this is an opportunity for supervisors and their Airmen to grow together. But it will only work if we use it.” The new form and process illustrate the emphasis the Air Force places on communicating for success. Cody said proper feedback is the most important element of a strong evaluation system. “It is the only way we can cultivate a culture that drives performance. Airmen must know what we expect of them,” Cody said. “We owe them direction and guidance so they can reach their fullest potential and capitalize on opportunities. If we fail at feedback, we fail our Airmen.” Learning to use the form won’t be hard, Brown said. Form numbers are the same — AF Form 931 for airmen basic through technical sergeants, AF Form 932 for master through chief master sergeants and AF Form 724 for lieutenants through colonels. “This is about more than using a form, though,” Brown said. “This is
about developing strong relationships with our Airmen. This is about talking to them, caring about what they need and want, showing them how to succeed and teaching them to make good choices.” The essence of successful evaluation is captured in worksheets that focus on standards like responsibility, accountability, understanding the Air Force culture, and understanding and meeting performance expectations. In addition, the form requires the rater to clarify the Airman’s role in support of the mission. “When an Airman can see how he or she directly impacts the mission, that’s motivational,” Brown said. “Too often, young Airmen don’t know how their work impacts the end goal. It’s tough to be motivated and excited when you don’t know if your job matters, so this section will help us educate and motivate our Airmen.” The new form also includes an individual readiness index identifying whether or not an Airman is deployable. “Ours is a mobile force, so this addition helps us remind Airmen that we have global responsibilities,” Brown said. The performance feedback section is the most familiar part of the form. It requires the rater to tell the Airman specifically how well he or she is doing in job knowledge, leadership skills, resource management, communication and more. “This section has far more depth than the old feedback forms,” Brown said. “We want to be crystal clear on
what the expectations are and how well Airmen are doing. Airmen want to succeed and here’s where we tell them how.” Also new to the feedback process is the “knowing your Airman” section. Although discussion driven by this section isn’t for evaluation purposes, it enables raters and supervisors to talk about Airmen’s goals and dreams, to vector Airmen toward achieving those goals and dreams, and to help their Airmen find a mentor, and become a mentor. “We have amazing, talented Airmen in our service, and every day, enthusiastic, smart kids make a commitment to join us,” Brown said. “They are offering us their lives. We have an obligation to honor that fact by teaching them how to be great Airmen, and that starts with open, honest, regular communication. That’s what this form and process are for.” To review the guidance memo that explains how to use the ACA worksheet, go to the e-Publishing website at www.e-publishing.af.mil and enter “AFI36-2406” in the search window. To review the new ACA worksheets, select the forms tab in e-Publishing and enter “AF931,” “AF932” or “AF724A” in the search window. LRMC Women’s Care Center closes Monday The Women’s Care Center at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center began transferring women’s health services to Primary Care and the LRMC OB/GYN clinic in June. The Women’s Care Center will close Monday. In an effort to sustain continuity for patients, beneficiaries currently enrolled to a primary care manager at an Army or Air Force Military Treatment Facility should direct any women’s health issues or concerns to their Primary Care Clinic, including their annual health exams, birth control counseling/ needs or any OB/GYN referrals. The Women’s Care Center is closing due to realignment of staff to primary and specialty clinics already devoted to the health and well-being of women. Space-available patients currently being seen in the Women’s Care Center will need to develop a relationship with a primary care provider on the local economy. The local TRICARE Service Center can provide a listing of local host nation providers to patients who need assistance. A list of providers is also available online at www.tricare-overseas. com/providersearch/searchcontent.aspx.
Below are questions and answers related to the closure: Q: I am a Space-A patient. What are the advantages of being seen by a doctor on the local economy? A: Establishing care with a primary care manager on the economy ensures the non-TRICARE eligible patient primary care access and continuity of care for them and their family while living in the KMC. Patients can contact the local TRICARE Service Center for assistance in locating an English speaking provider on the economy. In Germany, providers commonly ask for up-front payment before providing health care. Medical costs are reimbursable through the patient’s health insurance provider. U.S. civilian personnel are required by the government to have health insurance coverage when they arrive in Europe. Q: I don’t speak German. How would I go about booking an appointment? A: A comprehensive “Your Guide to Host Nation Health Care” is available for each Army mil-
itary community. The guide provides practical information such as maps to host nation facilities, driving directions and specific information about each facility. The guide can be found on the LRMC public website home page at http://ermc.amedd. army.mil/landstuhl/index.cfm. Q: What if I am enrolled to a male primary care manager and would like it changed to a female primary care manager? A: In order to request a change to your PCM, visit your local TRICARE Service Center and speak with an enrollment specialist. Q: I am due for a post-partum exam after having my baby at Landstuhl. How do I make an appointment? A: The LRMC OB/GYN clinic will perform the post-partum appointment. These appointments can be scheduled with the clinic directly by calling 5905839 or 06371-9464-5839. Capt. Spanky’s off-leash tour Hey Ramstein! Summer is finally here and it’s hitting us hard, especially those of us who do not have any sweat glands. My human finally took notice of my whimpering and panting and decided it was time to hit the beach. Not just any beach though, we made our way to Rügen Island. This was my kind of place. Being somewhat of a water dog myself, the beach is my idea of fun, but this place had every other beach I’ve been to beat by a longshot. Right on the Baltic Sea, Rügen is the largest island in Germany. The water was refreshing
and I even got to learn how to human-paddle, though the way you all move in the water is awkward, so I think I’ll stick with the doggy paddle. There was a lot more to do there than sit in the sand and enjoy the water. We spent some time in the Jasmund National Park exploring and looking at the chalk cliffs. My human wanted to climb them, but without opposable thumbs, climbing can be a challenge for me, so we went the long way and hiked to the top. The scene up there was like something out of a movie. I’d share a picture, but I think it is something everyone
should see for themselves the first time. If you have some spare time and want to get out and about, I’d go check it out. I know I’ll definitely be going back.

African Partnership Flight takes off in Senegal Story and photo by Staff Sgt. Ryan Crane U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa Public Affairs DAKAR, Senegal — More than 40 U.S. Air Force Airmen arrived here this week to participate in African Partnership Flight, co-hosted by Senegal and the U.S. The opening ceremony held Monday marked the first day of instruction and partnership with the attending African partners. This event features Airmen from eight African countries, including Senegal, Togo, Ghana, Benin, Mauritania, Niger and Nigeria, and Burkina Faso. “African Partnership Flight is used to develop interoperability and regional cooperation between African countries,” said. Maj. James Renfro, APF mission commander. “We want to develop communication between the separate countries so that if something does happen they are already familiar with each other and can assist their partners in a time of need.” African Partnership Flight is a collaborative learning environment, which helps air forces from the U.S. and partner nations in Africa work better together. The first APF was hosted in March 2012 and the program has since become a premier program for U.S. Africa Command to help foster security and stability throughout Africa. This APF includes classroom discussions as

To me, there’s nothing greater than that.” Following the military training instructor presentation, the recruits were paid a visit by a special guest. Brig. Gen. John Horner, Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas, Air Force recruiting service commander, adminis-
tered the oath of enlistment. This opportunity is something the recruits will be able to reflect on later in their careers. “Having (Horner) swear us in made it feel more patriotic and official,” Rinard said. “We say the words, and it’s usually more of the adrenaline of the moment knowing that I made this decision, but this was more of the affirmation of this is actually hap-

It felt very real and is definitely a memory I won’t soon forget.” The recruiters take the time to prepare future Airmen, even as far as making video calls to recruits in other countries who do not have a local recruiter readily available. They take every opportunity to give the recruits the best knowledge and advice before they leave. “It’s the goal of my recruit-

ers and the people that volunteer their time to set the young applicants up for success when they get through their basic military training experience,” Horner said. “A lot of that is managing expectations, showing them what we value and giving them a chance to feel their mental ability to succeed. We need Airmen who, when they are in adverse situations, don’t struggle but thrive under stress.” With recruiters being the front-line to the Air Force, it’s important they enforce the core values and keep their recruits qualified. “We are doing extremely well as an Air Force right now in attracting and inspiring America’s best and brightest,” Horner said. “The young men and women who are choosing to serve are smart, physically fit and drug free. I get the opportunity to see them graduate from basic military training and it makes me extremely proud as not only the commander of recruiting, but also as an American.”

Operation Spirit promotes partnership between German, American schools Story and photo by Brandon Beach 21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs More than 20 German high school students from the Rittersberg Gymnasium in Kaiserslautern got a first-hand look behind the fence at life on a U.S. military base during a visit to Panzer Kaserne June 10. The students spent most of the day getting to know their American counterparts from the KMC, while also observing several military demonstrations by units from the 21st Theater Sustainment Command. For many of these German students, this was their first encounter with a U.S. military base. “I’m impressed by what they (U.S. Soldiers) do here. I had no idea,” said Philip Zimmer, 17, a junior at Rittersberg Gymnasium. After an airborne demonstration by Soldiers from the 21st TSC’s 5th Quartermaster Theater Aerial Delivery Company, Zimmer had a chance to try on a parachute rucksack for size. “It’s quite heavy,” he said. “I think you need to be really strong, experienced and trained to do this job.” Other demonstrators included firefighters from the U.S. Army Fire Department Station East, dog handlers from the 100th Military Working Dog Detachment and maintenance personnel from Theater Logistics Support Command Europe. The various activities all fell under the banner of Operation Spirit, an annual event put on by the 21st TSC to promote partnership between German and
American schools. This year’s program was organized by four members of the 21st TSC’s Sgt. Morales Club, including Sgt. 1st Class Amber DeArmond, 1st Sgt. Michele Garner, Sgt. 1st Class Justin Puls and Sgt. 1st Class Katherine Turner. “What we want is for them to truly see it from the other person’s point of view, and that’s important growing up,” said Puls, a retention operations NCO with the 21st TSC’s Headquarters and Headquarters Company. A key goal of Operation Spirit is to build friendships between German and American students. To enable this, students from Kaiserslautern High School were paired with the visiting German students for the day — participating in activities, sharing lunch together and exchanging email addresses. “They get to learn about each other and exchange ideas,” Puls said. “A lot of what we’re doing out here came from meeting with the students and asking them what they wanted to do.” With activities in full swing, several leaders from the 21st TSC command group stopped by the event to talk with students, teachers and organizers and share their thoughts. “In my opinion, sometimes we get isolated on our kasernes, and we need to open them up to the local community, especially to the children,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Rodney Rhoades, 21st TSC senior enlisted adviser, who was joined by Brig. Gen. Paul Benanati, 21st TSC deputy commanding general. “This event will leave a positive lasting mark as they grow and become young adults.”
Brig. Gen. Paul Benanati, deputy commanding general for the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, talks with school children about Meals Ready to Eat during a German-American partnership event June 10 on Panzer Kaserne.
With gate guards and razor wire fences, U.S. military bases can pose an intimidating presence abroad. But, Andreas Volz, English and social sciences teacher at Rittersberg Gymnasium, said it doesn’t have to be that way. Visits such as these are a way of breaking down barriers. “I think it’s 20,000 Americans living in the (Kaiserslautern) area, so I think it’s good to know what’s going on within these American communities on the different bases,” he said. Volz also believes Operation Spirit can be further expanded to add a perspective not commonly experienced by American students — that of seeing life at a German gymnasium. “Personally, I think it should work the other way around, too,” he said. “I know that it is harder for your students to go to our schools and take the day off, but I think it can work both ways.”

Libraries launch ‘Paws to Read’ summer reading program by Staff Sgt. Ian Hoachlander Air Force Personnel Center Public Affairs JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIORANDOLPH, Texas — Summer is just around the corner, and right now is the perfect time to begin putting together your family’s summer reading list. Air Force libraries have launched the summer reading program “Paws to Read” and are planning a host of activities for children, teens and adults. Activities will range by location and include everything from nature programs to K-9 demonstrations. “We hope people will sink their teeth into this year’s program and fetch more books than ever before,” said Marjorie Buchanan, Air Force Personnel Center libraries branch chief. “Last summer the global program set a new reading record of 14.6 million minutes spent reading. Our goal this year is to break that record by providing activities and books for the whole family to enjoy.”
Base libraries throughout the Department of Defense will sponsor events and themes developed by iREAD. Resource guides, animal-themed materials and activities were developed by librarians for libraries to motivate children to read. “Our goal is to make sure reading is fun for children and their families, but we also know it’s a very important program for supporting brain development, student achievement and learning over a lifetime,” Buchanan said. Registration is underway at more than 200 Department of Defense libraries. Interested readers can go to their base library for more information or visit http://ila.org/dodsumread. Those who are not near an installation can email dodsumread@ navy.mil for participation information. For Airmen interested in checking out library books electronically, the online Air Force library provides total force Airmen, civilians, retirees and family members resources such as electronic books, audio

KHS competes in World Robot Olympiad challenge On May 24, three members of the Kaiserslautern Robotics Club had chance to participate in an all German robotics competition, called the World Robot Olympiad. This was the first year the team from Kaiserslautern High School participated in this event, and it was an incredible challenge being the only English speaking team at the event. This year the theme of the WRO was “space.” Elementary teams had to build a robot that could assemble a rocket. Junior teams had to build
a robot that could move satellites. Senior teams, including the team from KHS, had to build a robot that could manipulate and even change out solar panels on a space station. Students worked with mentors during the build season to create and program a robot to accomplish all the little sub-tasks involved in the challenge. Even though the build season was a couple months long, on game day the students had to arrive with just a box of parts and re-build their robot on site. Additionally, the students
were not able to control their robot via remote control during the heats. Each task had to be pre-programmed so the robot could run autonomously during the rounds. After all the rounds were completed, the Kaiserslautern team placed ninth with a score of -40 points, which wasn’t too bad considering the third place team had a score of -25. Event organizers agreed this year’s event was very challenging and they were pleased at how well everyone did. The team is looking forward to
returning next year. “Despite all the complications that arose, I enjoyed competing there and felt privileged to represent KHS at the WRO,” said first time robotics club member Zachary Branham. For more about the WRO, visit http://worldrobotolympiad. de/wro2014-uebersicht. If interested in being a mentor coach with the KHS Robotics Club, email Christopher Putnam at christopher.putnam@eu.dodea.edu. (Courtesy of Zachary Branham)

But when Jenko meets a kindred spirit on the football team, and Schmidt infiltrates the bohemian art major scene, they begin to question their
partnership. Now they don’t have to just crack the case — they have to figure out if they can have a mature relationship. If these two overgrown adolescents can grow from freshmen into real men, college might be the best thing that ever happened to them. Starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum.
