Leadership should never be taken lightly
COMMENTARY
by Lt. Col. Christopher Hall 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron commander One of the most prestigious and privileged ceremonies of my career took place on May 27, 2015. It involved my family, who had missed out on many of the significant professional milestones of my career due to deployments. This ceremony was not a christening, nor was it a wedding; it was the day I took command of the 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron. It was an emotional day filled with great satisfaction knowing that leaders deemed me worthy to take command and lead this group of more than 300 Airmen and local nationals. The men and women of the 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron are a unique group who make up the only squadron of its kind in the U.S. Air Force. This group of professionals provides world-class vehicle and equipment maintenance support as well as transportation support in and around the KMC, Europe and Africa. While reading these words, some may ask, “What does it mean to take command?” To each and every one of us, such an undertaking can mean many different things. There are numerous leaders who have come and gone
before me and have taken on the great responsibility of command. Their answer, and I echo this when asked what it means to command - it is about leadership!
Leadership “ opportunity to
is an serve. It is not a trumpet call to self-importance. ~ J. Donald Walters
”
Taking command requires self-sacrifice. Self-sacrifice is the giving of one’s time, talents and resources to ensure the well-being of others. There will be times that your men and women will need you to go above and beyond the call of duty. Every commander in the U.S. Air Force is charged with organizing, training and equipping their Airmen with the tools and resources needed to fight our nations’ wars. Our Airmen are resilient, tenacious, daring and creative, but sometimes they need to stand on the shoulders of their leaders in order to complete unique or unforeseen tasks. Taking command
is about sacrificing your time to lead and to help find those answers in order to move your team forward through those unchartered challenges. My hope during my leadership journey is that I am transparent so my Airmen know who I am and what I stand for. In my view, it is imperative for each member on the team to understand their role and that includes the captain or leader of the team. To take on a leadership role in any organization, or even within your family, is a privilege; a privilege never to be taken lightly. Being in charge of the morale, health and welfare of a unit brings about great burdens as well as unimaginable joys. I relish in the fact that I have the ability to affect the lives of so many, both professionally and personally. Having that responsibility forces me to look at myself in the mirror and ensure that I am not only enforcing the standards, but living by them as well. Taking command is leading by example and displaying all of our Air Force’s Core Values — “Integrity first, Service before self and Excellence in all we do.” I hope to be the shining beacon that will provide my unit the leadership, guidance and confidence wherein we can do anything together.

to give a big welcome to General Thomas and his wife and say welcome back to Ramstein.” As the wing commander, Thomas will be responsible for six groups, 27 squadrons and 10 geographically-separated units across five countries including the United Kingdom, Spain, Belgium and Turkey. “General Mordente, thank you for your service to the 86th Airlift Wing,” Thomas said. "It is clear that this wing and its Airmen are successful and on the right track, which speaks greatly to the person leading them. To the Airmen of Ramstein, I will always be proud to serve with you. You can expect me to give my best every day, leading with passion and compassion for you and your families. I ask but one thing in return; that you extend that same level of effort to execute the mission. It is our duty to follow in the footsteps of those great Airmen before us.” Before becoming commander, Thomas served as Joint Staff/ J7 Deputy Director for Future Joint Force Development in Suffolk, Virginia, where he was responsible for joint concept development, joint war gaming, joint and coalition operational analysis and joint lessons learned. During his last assignment to Ramstein AB, Thomas served as the commander of the 86th Operations Group.

Forward posture enables 140-ton joint airlift Story and photos by Senior Airman Nicole Sikorski 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
U.S. Airmen and Soldiers worked together here to transport two M1A2 Abrams main battle tanks to the Novo Selo Training area in Bulgaria June 20 and 22. The joint team moved the two 70-ton tanks within 15 minutes into the back of a C-17 Globemaster III to aid in the multinational, U.S. Army Europe-led “Speed and Power” exercise which is a part of the overarching Operation Atlantic Resolve. “I was amazed because I’ve never seen 70 tons fly,” said U.S. Army 1st Lt. Frank Wood, 3rd Infantry Division’s 3rd Combined Arms Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment from Fort Stewart, Georgia.
“It’s a great honor to be a part of a mission like this because it is the first time an American tank has ever shot in Bulgaria. Being able to prove that we can take these 70-ton ‘monsters’ and move them from Germany to Bulgaria so quickly shows our adversaries that we can rapidly move large weaponry as well as highlight U.S. and NATO capabilities.” This movement is the first time these tanks have been transported since 2003, when Ramstein Airmen aided in sending approximately 28 tanks in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Not only is this mission historically significant but also one which will be remembered by all the Airmen that made this movement happen. The strategic access that has been established throughout U.S. European Command provides unsurpassed capability in a strategically vital forward location.
“It is great to be a part of this mission and to be here supporting the NATO efforts in Bulgaria,” said Capt. Cohan Lammerding, 4th Airlift Squadron aircraft commander, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. “This will actually be my first mission as an aircraft commander so I am especially excited for this.” The tanks will serve in Bulgaria to improve U.S. and Bulgarian soldiers’ knowledge and train them on operability. This event will also give them a chance to train in a live-fire environment to get a glimpse of what it would be like to take these tanks into battle. Moving these tanks quickly and efficiently is just one example of Ramstein’s ability to offer forward-based, worldwide airlift capabilities at a moment’s notice.

37th AS, 435th CRG support Saber Strike 15 Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Armando A. Schwier-Morales 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
Pilots watch as U.S. Army members land during a combined jump day with the Latvian armed forces June 15 at Lielvarde.
RIGA, Latvia — Two units out of Ramstein, working side by side, are able to complete a variety of missions. During exercise Saber Strike 15 they were able to showcase their capabilities in and around the Baltic region June 10 through 18. Airmen from the 86th Airlift Wing and 435th Air Ground Operations Wing were afforded training opportunities to complete three unique missions during the exercise. They took off from Riga International Airport to assess and secure a strip of land thousands of miles away, landed on that field, dropped cargo for a variety of purposes and then brought joint and multinational friends along for some personnel jumps. “We are able to really work together and accomplish the Saber Strike objectives, and everything seemed to work relatively seamlessly,” said Capt. Mark Wilson, 37th Airlift Squadron aircraft commander. Saber Strike 15 is a multinational exercise with more than 6,000 participants and 13 nations designed to improve each other’s processes and methods, to build partnerships and promote stability in the Baltic area. During the exercise, Airmen from the 435th Security Forces Squadron parachuted out of a C-130J Super Hercules belonging to the 86th AW and established an expeditionary airfield in Estonia. This event is normally something they cannot do at home station due to airspace restrictions. “(Saber Strike) gives us a good chance to practice with the 435th CRG and their airfield seizure team, and that’s an opportunity that we definitely don’t have in Germany,” said Wilson. The 435th Contingency Response

A C-130J Super Hercules passes behind a Latvian military member during a combined jump day June 15 at Lielvarde. More than 70 U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army and Latvian service members participated in a jump day to strengthen the bonds of allies and learn from each other during exercise Saber Strike 15. The exercise involves more than 6,000 service members from 14 nations participating all throughout Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland to learn from each other and promote stability in the region.
Group, parent unit of the 435th SFS, is comprised of 42 career fields and is the U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa’s only force capable of establishing contingency airfield operations and initial command and control. “Saber Strike is a huge verification of CRG capability to jump out of an aircraft, assess the field, secure the field and have follow-on aircraft land,” said Maj. Joey Lubbers, 435th AGOW director of staff. After the 435th AGOW secured the airfield, the 37th AS tested their ability to conduct austere landing in the middle of a grass field. After completing the landing and taking off safely from Estonia, they loaded up with cargo and dropped necessary supplies to Washington Air National Guard joint terminal attack controllers in Latvia. They were also escorted by Maryland Air National Guard A-10 Thunderbolt IIs and performed simulated drops. “We brought the mobility air forces to the fight,” said Wilson. “We were able to work with the ANG units, with different JTACs, and with the host nation members of Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania. It was a great exercise to strengthen our interoperability.” After exercising their capabilities, both units took to the skies again, this time with more than 70 U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force and Latvian service members for a jump day event. “It’s a NATO building partnership event we get a lot of good training from,” said Lubbers. “We get to show them how we operate and how we jump from the C-130 aircraft, and the CRG is providing the jumpmaster for that. It’s just a great partnership opportunity for us to get drops together here in Latvia and work with our NATO allies.” The two units’ time in Latvia and Saber Strike came to an end quickly, but both Lubbers and Wilson are grateful for the lessons the 435th AGOW and 37th AS were able to give and take from their NATO allies as they help build interoperability and ensure a stable Baltic region.

aspects of the training full circle. “These guys out here get it…everything is going smoothly; it makes my job too easy,” said Staff Sgt. Timothy Kennedy, 435th SFS senior instructor. “How well these guys perform relies heavily on how well the squad comes together as a team, as well as the mentorship and leadership from each squad’s squad leader.” The students battled fatigue and extreme weather but overcame those challenges through teamwork and communication. The FTX was a success; all objectives were met. “The biggest take away from this course, the field exercises and the FTX was teamwork,” said Garcia. The defenders were all smiles during graduation as Maj. Andrew Moore, USAFE GCRTC commander, congratulated and named the top performers during the course. Each award is named after a fallen defender. we share. This is a whirlwind trip; it has been fantastic, and it has reinforced to me just how important the U.S. military presence in Europe is,” she said. James shared her three priorities that have been the cornerstone of her time since taking on the role of SECAF just over a year and a half ago. “Number one: taking care of people,” she said. “I have been in the business of defense for my entire professional life, and what I have learned in every single job I’ve had is the importance of people.” James stressed finding balance in the readiness of today and the readiness of tomorrow in her second point. “These are areas we are trying to invest in,” she stated, noting the efforts to increase the budget for readiness across the force. James’ third priority — make every dollar count — echoed the savings programs
inspired by Gen. Larry O. Spencer, U.S. Air Force Vice Chief of Staff, emphasizing how the military acts as stewards of taxpayers’ money. The SECAF gave the example of smarter spending by building in better affordability in modernization and future programs. James ended her briefing by thanking USAFEAFAFRICA Airmen for their work. “Continue to do the terrific job you’re doing...thank you, thank you, thank you for being forward, ready, now.” Gen. Frank Gorenc, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa commander gave final remarks, praising the hard work of the SECAF. “That was an exceptional summary of all the things that our secretary has to deal with,” said Gorenc. “We appreciate greatly your enthusiasm for our Air Force and the recognition that we are America’s asymmetric advantage, and without air power, you lose,” he concluded.

Preparation Take an empty, clean bottle (maybe a nice wine bottle) and put raspberries or strawberries in it (frozen berries are ok too). Then add a bit of sugar. Add water and vinegar to the bottle (50/50) and shake it a bit so the sugar doesn’t sit at the bottom of the bottle. Close the bottle and put it in the fridge for four weeks. After two weeks, take a sip of the vinegar to see if the taste is what you desire (add ingredients as desired). You will have delicious homemade vinegar dressing for your summer salads.

Motorcycle Safety Day – TSC cyclists gear up for safe riding by Marisa Alia-Novobilski 21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs Motorcycle riders from across the 21st Theater Sustainment Command shared experiences, best practices and camaraderie at the sixth annual 21st TSC Motorcycle Safety Day June 18 at the Motorcycle Safety Course on Kapaun Air Station. The annual event, put on by the 21st TSC Safety Office with participation by Motorcycle Safety Foundation certified rider coaches, the American Red Cross as well as members of the 86th Airlift Wing and the 21st TSC Family Readiness Group, aims to improve overall safe riding skills of motorcyclists in the local military community. “We’ve held a motorcycle safety event every year since 2009 with a great outcome and lots of fun,” said Hans Orlich, 21st TSC safety specialist. “The bottom line is that we want to reduce the number of accidents with motorcycles. Through training we can slow down and eliminate the accident trend – you can never have enough training.” Rainy weather prevented the group from taking their bikes out on the MSF course, but riders discussed best practices and safe riding skills and shared tips on how to enjoy the roads in Europe safely. Volunteers from the Red Cross and the 86th Airlift Wing Medical Group provided a first-aid demonstration to help riders understand how to clean a wound and take care of themselves or another rider in their group if an accident were to

Helmets, ankle high boots, reflective gear and rash-resistant gloves and clothing play a major role in whether a person is able to survive a motorcycle accident. occur on the road. Bob McGaffin, a 45-year motorcycle enthusiast, MSF rider coach trainer and the safety manager at the 18th Military Police Brigade, led the discussions, sharing personal experiences and motorcycle mishaps. “Most, if not all, motorcycle accidents are entirely preventable,” said McGaffin. “Europe is one of the best places in the world to ride a motor-
cycle, but we cannot underestimate the dangers of riding. If you ride a motorcycle, you will have a close call, and if you don’t train or practice your skills, you have a 95 percent chance of not doing the right thing in an emergency. You cannot let yourself get in a situation where you need to use your emergency skills. Awareness is key.” According to Army Safety Office

Motorcycles sit outside of the MSF training offices on Kapaun Air Station during the sixth annual 21st TSC Motorcycle Safety Day training event June 18. Though the rainy weather prevented the group from taking their bikes out on the course, riders were still able to discuss best practices and safe riding skills while sharing tips on enjoying the roads safely in Europe.
data, Soldiers suffered 23 motorcycle fatalities during fiscal year 2014; as of June 15, there have been 10 Army motorcycle fatalities so far this year. This number represents almost a quarter of all off-duty fatalities. Though U.S. Army Europe has not had any motorcycle fatalities this year, motorcycle accidents still represent a major cause of injuries and fatalities for U.S. personnel serving in Europe. “Riding in Europe is totally different than riding in the states,” said Walter Chemerka, supply activity division chief at the Theater Logistics Support Center – Europe and 35-year motorcycle enthusiast. “Curves are sharper and roads are different. You need to adjust your riding a bit more to accommodate the different passing rules, speed limits, roads and tires.” Sgt. Jessica Garrett, a reception, staging, onward movement and integration noncommissioned officer with the 21st TSC’s 1st Human Resources Sustainment Center, emphatically agreed. “It’s faster. The curves are real,” she said. The training day coincides with peak motorcycle riding season in Europe and the Army’s summer safety campaign. “Accidents are always a risk, but days like today really help make a difference,” said Chemerka. “Today is about mentorship, friendship and riding — we can learn so much from each other and focus on being safer.”

US, German medical commands formalize partnership by Ed Drohan Europe Regional Medical Command Public Affairs Commanders from the U.S. Army Europe Regional Medical Command and the German military Regional Medical Care Command formalized a partnership agreement during a ceremony in Diez, Germany June 16 to increase opportunities for collaboration and mutually beneficial exchanges. Brig. Gen. Van Coots, ERMC Commanding General, exchanged partnership certificates with Bundeswehr Kommando Regionale Sanitätsdienstliche Unterstützung Commanding General Maj. Gen. (Dr.) Dirk Raphael at Schloss Oranienstein, headquarters for the German command. The ceremony formalized discussions between the two organizations that have been ongoing for several months. The RMCCOM, as the German unit is known, is responsible for the treatment and medical examination of German Soldiers in 128 medical clinics throughout the country. ERMC provides medical care for more than 200,000 Soldiers, family members, civilian employees and retirees through their 13 health clinics – nine in Germany – and Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. “This ceremonial act will officially mark a new beginning in the bilateral cooperation between ERMC and RMCCOM,” Raphael said. “The partnership between ERMC and RMCCOM is an excellent extension to the well-tried and reliable ’shoulder-to-shoulder’ cooperation
during our joint deployments in Afghanistan and Kosovo for more than 15 years.” For Coots, the partnership is a natural extension of the cooperation between the two nations in the past. “Good partnerships have certain characteristics – trust, mutual respect, good communication, and common values,” Coots explained. “These characteristics exist among us here today, and these characteristics are why I believe we will be successful. “Our military medical assets today are commonly asked to handle more missions with less resources and/or personnel. Increasingly, this is blurring the lines between operational medical units and garrison healthcare facilities,” Coots said. “This makes the partnership between our forces even more important to enabling NATO and ensuring we have the capabilities and the capacity to respond as allies when needed.” Initial partnership activities should include short term staff exchanges and interaction between the two units during social events, Raphael said. Planning is ongoing for more extensive exchanges, possibly including medical personnel, once some hurdles such as credentialing procedures can be cleared. “Considering this new field of military tasks, we want to start a close and reliable cooperation in order to actually live and feel the partnership between ERMC and RCCOM,” Raphael said. The partnership is extremely important in light of current events happening throughout the region. “We are all aware of the
security challenges facing the European region,” Coots said. “These challenges require strength among allies. Partnerships like the one we are here to recognize today
create beneficial opportunities, improve interoperability and capacity among partners and allies, and contribute to a strong Europe. As we take advantage of opportuni-
ties to enhance open cooperation among our medical services, we ensure that we are prepared to respond to the challenges of today and tomorrow.”

Legal offers PCS tips, household goods claims by 86th Airlift Wing Legal Center PCS season is upon us! Members can help alleviate potential stress from loss or damage to household goods by learning the rules under which household goods are moved and by preparing oneself for a potential moving claim. First, inventory what you own and note its condition prior to the Transportation Service Provider stepping foot into the home. Take digital photos or a video of high value items and family heirlooms or consider keeping such items in your possession during the move. Second, having a professional appraisal done on antique furniture is also a good idea, not just for potential moving claims, but also in case you suffer a home fire or theft. A professional appraisal establishes the value of the item and can be used in the claims process to help establish any loss in value should the item arrive damaged from the move. Finally, when goods are packed up by the TSP, high-value items may be placed on the high-value/highrisk inventory. This special inven-
tory supplements a member's household goods inventory and is used by the TSP to protect these high value items such as currency, coins, jewelry, silverware and silver sets, crystal, figurines, furs, and objects of art. Although members are not prohibited from shipping currency and jewelry, the Air Force Claims Service Center strongly discourages this and recommends members move these items personally. Household Goods Claims Unfortunately, damage does occur. If you suffer damage, you should be aware your property is covered under the provisions of the Full Replacement Value legislation enacted by Congress in 2006. This means that TSPs are required to pay the full replacement value on any items missing or destroyed during your move or replace the item. TSPs are also required to repair any item that can be repaired. The TSP is responsible for contacting a repair firm. To utilize this program, most Airmen will be required to use the Defense Personal Property System website (www.move.mil). This web-
site allows Airmen to submit their Loss/Damage Report directly to the TSP. (If DPS is not available for your move, you may also file your Notice of Loss/Damage After Delivery Form (1850/DD 1840R) directly to your carrier by mail, fax, or email within 75 days or contact the AFCSC for assistance). Remember that filing a Loss/Damage Report is not the same as filing a claim. The Loss/Damage Report simply puts the carrier on notice that an Airman has discovered additional damage or loss since delivery. The Loss/Damage Report must be received by the carrier within 75 days of delivery. Failure to meet the 75-day deadline could result in no reimbursement for loss or damage to those items not noted at the time of delivery. Under the FRV program, after filing the Loss/Damage report, you are then required to file your claim directly against your TSP. This claim must be made within nine months of delivery of your household goods in order for you to receive FRV. If you miss the nine-month deadline, you can still file a claim up to two years from the delivery date, but you would receive
only depreciated value. If you are not satisfied with how your processing is proceeding through the TSP, you can transfer your claim to the AFCSC 30 days after filing against your TSP for any reason whatsoever. Finally, if you are negotiating with your TSP and would like someone within the Air Force to assist you, you can contact the AFCSC for support. If you receive a settlement offer from your TSP that you believe is unfair, you can transfer the claim to the AFCSC. Although AFCSC can only pay depreciated valuation in most situations, after paying your claim, the Air Force will file an FRV claim against the responsible TSP and may be able to pay you an additional award recovered from the TSP. The AFCSC currently has a very high recovery rate against responsible TSPs. Help is Available If this process seems overwhelming, do not fret! The AFCSC is available to assist Airmen through the claims process. The Ramstein Law Center is also available to provide information. For more information contact the 86th AW legal office.

pathogens in our region are Borrelia spp., which is the causative agent of Lyme disease, and Tickborne encephalitis virus, which is the second important pathogen transmitted by ticks in this geographical region. One key note about Lyme disease in Europe is that 45 percent of people infected never develop the hall mark bull’s-eye rash (erythema migrans). Infected ticks have to attach and remain on that individual for 24 to 48 hours in order to transmit most diseases. To help prevent tick bites, it is best to recognize tick habitats and avoid them when possible. Ticks need layered shade and moist air, so they prefer to stay along the forest edge in shady, tall grassy or bushy areas. If you manage to find yourself or any of your family members or pets in these types of areas, here are a few simple tips for tick bite prevention: • Wear protective clothing (long sleeves and pants treated with permethrin, if possible) • Use insect repellents containing DEET on exposed skin • Perform routine tick checks • Leave your shoes outside and wash clothes as soon as possible. Ticks may survive on clothes in the washing machine, but a hot cycle in the dryer will kill ticks. If you do happen to locate
a feeding tick, the prompt and proper removal is the key to reducing the risk of disease transmission. Ticks should be removed using tweezers, pulling back slowly and steadily with firm force in the reverse direction in which the mouth parts are inserted, as you would do for a splinter. Don’t burn it. Use soap, gasoline, Vaseline or any other method mentioned on social media. Slow, gentle movement is the key. Once the tick is removed, cleanse the bite with alcohol and apply antibiotic ointment. Most tick bites may cause skin irritation at the feeding site, but this doesn’t indicate disease transmission. Ticks that have been removed from people should be saved for identification and testing. Military personnel and DOD civilians should place the tick in a ziplock bag, and take it to the local military medical treatment facility (veterinary treatment facility for pets). The facility will forward the tick to the U.S. Army Public Health Command RegionEurope (PHCR-Europe) Entomological Science Division for identification. If the ticks are identified as possible disease carriers, they will be sent to the PHCR-Europe Laboratory Sciences Division for testing. All results from identification through PCR testing (if warranted) are sent back to the clinics that submitted them.

by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The historical part of Kaiserslautern called “Altstadt” will lure more than 200,000 visitors when it celebrates its annual Altstadtfest, old town fest, July 3 to 5. For three days and two nights, Steinstrasse and its side streets will be one giant open-air area. Kaiserslautern's deputy mayor, Dr. Susanne WimmerLeonhardt, will officially open the event at 7 p.m. July 3 at Unionsplatz. During the three-day event, more than 70 bands and artists will perform on nine stages set up between Martinsplatz on the bottom of Steinstrasse and Mainzer Tor on top of Steinstrasse. “The Altstadtfest will surprise with new participants and an extended cultural diversity this year,” said Alexander Hess, project manager of the office for events in Kaiserslautern. “We’ll be able to present such a high-quality
entertainment program with the support of sponsors.” More than 80 national and international vendors will present their merchandise such as art and craft items, leather goods, jewelry and clothes in the little side streets. About 40 restaurant and pub owners located in the Altstadt as well as regional associations will put up booths and tables and take visitors on a culinary trip throughout the world. The medieval group Die Legende will set up a medieval camp near St. Martin’s church and present show fights, medieval dancing, music and fire shows. The election of Miss Kaiserslautern 2015 will take place 3 to 5 p.m. July 5 on Unionsplatz. “In recent years, the fest was always a peaceful one,” said Hess. “It’s also important that we offer the night bus to take late party-goers home safely.” Busses depart the bus station at the Kaiserslautern city hall between 0:15 and 3:15 a.m. For more information and
to see the bus schedule, visit www.swk-kl.de/en/transportation/the-lautrer-night-bus. html. The fest is open on July 3 from 3 p.m. to 1 a.m.; July 4 from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m.; and July 5 from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.. For more information on the program, bands and times, pick up the brochure in the Kaiserslautern Tourist Information office next to the Fruchthalle, in local restaurants or other official institutions. Several streets will be closed to traffic. For details about the fest and parking possibilities, visit www. kaiserslautern.de. Organizers recommend using buses and regional trains to get home at night. Announcing new help for victims of domestic abuse: Air Force Family Advocacy DAVA Program by Emily McCormick Family Advocacy
Abuse within a relationship is a devastating experience. Often victims want to seek help but don’t know where to turn. Family Advocacy is providing a new service which offers immediate support and services to men or women affected by abuse. The Domestic Abuse Victim Advocate (DAVA) program is available to victims 24/7. If you are a victim of relationship abuse and want to speak with someone about your situation, you can call the numbers provided below to speak to a licensed provider or advocate. The DAVA can
provide assistance by helping you develop a safety plan, assessing imminent risk of harm and connecting you with helpful services. The DAVA can also arrange for you to receive follow-up care with Family Advocacy if desired. All services are voluntary and offered at no cost. Sometimes an individual can be unsure as to whether abuse is occurring in a relationship. Domestic violence is more than physical abuse. Threatening statements and gestures, put-downs, intimate partner rape, and restricting access to money, cars, or other people are all part of domestic abuse. Partners are not the only people affect-
ed by domestic violence. Even if children are not in the same room when a fight takes place, they can often hear what is happening. They are also affected by a parent’s angry, fearful or depressed moods. Children may act out their feelings of insecurity, do poorly in school or be affected by not sleeping well. Help is available for all family members. If you are a victim of domestic violence and would like support during the duty day, please contact Family Advocacy at 479-2370 or 06371-46-2370. After hours, you can call the Domestic Abuse Victim Advocate at 0173-628-4624.

by Senior Airman Nicole Sikorski 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Ramstein Youth Center was awarded its first-ever Science, Technology, Engineering and Math grant to expand its educational resources for students June 1. The STEM grant, provided by Raytheon, helps to fund education programs and events outside of the classroom. Depending on the progress of the youth center’s funded programs, the STEM grant will provide up to $45,000 a year for five years. RYC was invited by Boys and Girls Clubs of America to apply for the grant, which was awarded to only six youth centers across the globe. The STEM grant will make a long-lasting impact on the lives of students at Ramstein, said Mona Hamilton, RYC programs director. “Any opportunities that allow our youth to grow, learn, and to increase their resilience and success in life is just something we can’t pass up,” she said. “It is especially important with (the way that) the world is growing and changing in technology.” In order to be eligible for the grant, youth centers must encourage the values of character, citizenship, academic success and healthy lifestyles. In addition to teaching the impor-
tance of resilience, Hamilton explained that RYC includes those key values as part of its programs and lessons for students which helped them to attain the grant. “Questions on the application were designed to (recognize) the youth center that used these strategies to create a culture of innovation,” said Hamilton. The STEM grant will be used for curriculum supplies, field trips and events. It will also reach beyond the walls of the youth center in support of the Department of Defense schools on Ramstein, base agencies and military units or contractors working in a STEM capacity. According to Matthew Dilda, Ramstein youth programs assistant, the STEM grant will give students a chance to prosper at a young age. “Now that we have this grant, we will be able to provide the kids with more science camps and programs,” Dilda said. “It is important to spark their interest at a young age for development of their education and for their future careers.” Funds will also be used for environmental redesign in the areas of education and in the progress of structural projects within schools. Design team experts will work to revamp the educational environment with additions like computers, smart boards and small construction projects.

Start applying for the USDA Free/ Reduced School Lunch Program by 86th Mission Support Group school liaison office The USDA free/reduced-price lunch program can save a family up to $466 per child attending Department of Defense Dependents Schools every year. The USDA School Lunch Program is offered at all KMC schools and is designed to meet federal requirements for nutritiously balanced meals and offer free or reduced-price meals to eligible children. Families need to apply annually for the program; applications for school year 2015-2016 will be accepted starting July 1. Eligibility for receiving free or reduced-price meals at school is based on total family income and household size. When determining income eligibility, COLA and housing are not included as income. For example: • An E-7 with 14 years of service and a total household size of four (sponsor, spouse and two children) would qualify for the reduced-price lunch program providing there is no additional income in the household. • An E-8 with 20 years of service
and a total household size of five (sponsor, spouse and three children) would qualify for the reduced-price lunch program, again providing there is no additional income in the household. The current price of reduced lunch is 40 cents versus the full price of $2.55 for secondary meals; this is a possible savings of $375.15 per child during the course of the school year. Applications are accepted throughout the school year by the 86th Mission Support Group school liaison office. The application form, USAFE400, may be obtained at any of the KMC Schools, school liaison offices or downloaded at http://www.e-publishing.af.mil.
