Hicks honors fallen service members, Gold Star families in Memorial Day message

Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen H. Hicks paid tribute to service members who made the ultimate sacrifice and the families they left behind in a video message and statement released today.

In her statement, Hicks said: “Each Memorial Day, we come together as a nation to express our gratitude and pay tribute to those fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in service and defense of this nation. It is our collective responsibility to never forget them, nor their surviving families, for all they have given to this country and the loss they’ve endured. To our Gold Star families, as [Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III] stated this morning, ‘You will always be part of our military family.’

“This year, my staff and I visited Arlington National Cemetery to pay our respects to those brave and dedicated service members we’ve lost. It was a stark and timely reminder that each fallen hero has a story and that it is our sacred duty to carry their stories forward, honor their service and sacrifice, maintain their legacies, and support their surviving families now and in the years to come.

“This year, we commemorate the 50th anniversary of our all-volunteer force. This milestone was not an inevitability. Our force is the finest fighting force in the world because of those

individuals who continue to raise their hand and commit to defending the nation and our Constitution against all odds.

“It is more important than ever

that we understand the importance of public service and particularly military service, that we, as a nation, understand the deep and enduring commitment it takes to protect our

freedoms, strengthen our democracy, and ensure our national security. And that we understand the debt we owe to our service members today and always for all they do to keep our nation safe.”

Recognizing volunteers within KMC

The Military & Family Readiness Center hosted the annual Volunteer Excellence Award Ceremony on April 19. The VEA was established to recognize individuals who have performed outstanding volunteer community services throughout the year.

Dr. Julie Taufa’asau, 86th Force Support Squadron flight chief for the M&FRC, explained the importance of volunteering and giving back to the community.

“When you volunteer, you are making a commitment to share one of the most precious of resources, your time, to make a difference in your community and for those who are in need,” said Dr. Julie Taufa’asau.

Not only did the M&FRC host the VEA, they also have a program that provides volunteer opportunities. The program offers a list of on-going and longterm opportunities and is designed to highlight organizations in need of volunteer support with their contact information. The organizations are responsible for coordinating

with the volunteers and tracking volunteer hours.

Rachell Kilbride, 86th Force Support Squadron community readiness specialist for the M&FRC, explained that the program is a resource avenue that ensures all Kaiserslautern Military Community members have access to different volunteer options, which includes youth programs, American Red Cross, libraries, K9s for vets abroad and more.

Airman 1st Class Marshall Burch, 603rd Air Communication Squadron feeder battle management core technician, has been able to utilize the M&FRC to find volunteer programs. He is currently working on becoming an Air Force youth sports coach.

Burch explained that the M&FRC reaches out to leadership teams and provides information about the organizations that need support. Through that outreach, they are able to spread the word about what is available to the KMC.

“There are many benefits from volunteering,” said Burch. “It creates a unique opportunity to build relationships within your community or can act as a social

bridge between your community and another.”

Kilbride explained how doing volunteer work upon arriving at Ramstein AB helped her meet new people and make connections

within the KMC. She encourages everyone to check out the volunteer program and see what might interest you.

Mother, son reconnect in Germany

Capt. Crystal Turner, Critical Care Air Transport Team nurse, experienced a feeling that many mothers do when their child says, “I want to join the military.” She described it as a mix of pride and sadness seeing her son, Airman 1st Class Don Turner, KC-135 boom operator, head off to begin his career in the U.S. Air force.

“My momma heart broke,” explained Capt. Turner. “He went as far away as he could.”

Capt. Turner is stationed at Walter Reed Medical Center, Andrews Air Force Base, VA., and Airman 1st Class Turner calls Fairchild Air Force Base, WA., home. When Capt. Turner was notified of a deployment to Germany, she prepared for the

months she would be even further away, and unable to see her family. Early into her deployment, however, she found out that her “see you later,” would quickly become a “see you soon.”

“I was asked if I wanted to go on a temporary duty assignment,” said the younger Turner. “When I found out where, I had to let my mom know as soon as possible.”

Not expecting to receive an opportunity to support a TDY so early in his career, Airman 1st Class Turner was surprised when his leadership gave him the opportunity to support a mission that was heading to Germany. He agreed to take the mission, and before long he was on a transatlantic flight to meet up with his mother in Germany.

“It was so cool. It was surreal to be with him in a work capacity,”

said Capt. Turner. “It’s so rare to have that overlap.”

The two Turners capitalized on the short time they got to spend with each other in Germany, enjoying local cuisine and taking in the sights of Trier. Before donning their civilian attire to tour Germany, however, there was one order of business that had to be taken care of.

“That’s the first time he ever

saluted me,” Capt. Turner said after receiving a salute from her son since they could both say they were on active duty in 2021. “We’ve never been in uniform together.”

Even though they currently wear the same uniform, Airman 1st Class Turner pointed out where his inspiration to join the military came from.

“It was my dad,” he said. “My mom and I both decided to join

around the same time, but she beat me to the punch.”

Even though her son credits his dad for the inspiration to join the military, Capt. Turner concluded by saying just how proud she is of her son’s accomplishments.

“As a mom you tell your kids you’re proud of them, and they’re like, ‘yeah, yeah, yeah,’ but he’s doing some really cool stuff. I’m going to tear up; that’s my baby.”

Know Your Defender: 1st Lt. Joseph Williams

When Romania leads a multinational division in wet gap crossings in the Black Sea region next month, 1st Lt. Joseph Williams will be tracking every move of the linked Saber Guardian 23 exercise, part of DEFENDER 2023.

As the executive officer for 50th Multi-Role Bridge Company, 5th Engineer Battalion out of Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri, Williams oversees the 50th Multi-Role Bridge Tactical Operation Center throughout the duration of Saber Guardian 2023.

According to Williams, large scale global exercises like Saber Guardian 23 ensure the 50th MRBC is ready to deploy worldwide and execute engineer missions in support of Unified Land Operations.

An expert in engineering and the more than $94 million in heavy trucks, boats, float bridge bays, and other equipment his Company uses to cross water obstacles that prevent traditional ground maneuvers, Williams provides critical advice to maneuver commanders. Wet gap crossings are a complex and major operation in contested environments.

Hailing from Killeen, Texas, Williams’ U.S. Army career has made him a world-traveler.

“This is my second Defender Europe,” said Williams. “Last year, I was a part of the 5th Engineer Battalion, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, where we oversaw 74th Multi-Role Bridge Company conducting wet gap crossing operations throughout Poland. We had the opportunity to bridge with the Polish, Swedish, and French militaries, and it was eye opening. Everyone learned different tactics from one another, and we walked away with our heads held high knowing that our partner countries are skilled and well versed in gap crossing operations.”

Williams is looking forward to learning from and training with the Romanian-led multinational division during wet gap crossings in Frecatei and Bordusani, Romania for Saber Guardian 23.

“I am a firm believer that everybody can learn something from anyone,” said Williams. “The battlefield changes every day, and it is important to keep up with the times. Our Allies and Partners are very competent when it comes to these complex operations, and it is

important we synchronize our tactics when it comes to joint operations. We look forward to exercising this equipment and showing

the world what 50th MRBC and joint NATO forces can do.”

Williams recently helped tell that story by briefing Romanian,

British and German reporters at Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base.

Media were covering the 405th Army Field Support Brigade’s

issue of Army Prepositioned Stock equipment to 50th MRBC.

Although not usually part of his regular duties, Williams appreciated the opportunity to put his mass communications degree to work.

DEFENDER 23 is a U.S. Army Europe and Africa led exercise focused on the strategic deployment of continental United Statesbased forces, employment of Army Prepositioned Stocks, and interoperability with Allies and partners. Taking place from April 22 to 23 June, DEFENDER 23 demonstrates USAREUR-AF’s ability to aggregate U.S.-based combat power quickly in Eastern Europe, increase lethality of the NATO Alliance through long-distance fires, build unit readiness in a complex joint, multi-national environment, and leverage host nation capabilities to increase USAREUR-AF’s operational reach. DEFENDER 23 includes more than 7,000 U.S. and 17,000 multi-national service members from more than 20 nations who will participate including, but not limited to: Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, United Kingdom and the United States.

5 things you may not know about D-Day

D-Day. The Invasion of Normandy. Operation Overlord. It goes by various names, but we’ve all heard about it through history class, grandparents, the news or shows like “Band of Brothers.”

June 6, 1944, is the day when more than 160,000 Allied forces landed in Nazi-occupied France as part of the biggest air, land and sea invasion ever executed. It ended with heavy casualties — more than 9,000 Allied soldiers were killed or wounded in those first 24 hours — but D-Day is largely considered the successful beginning of the end of Hitler’s tyrannical regime.

The bravery by the paratroopers and soldiers who stormed Normandy that day is well-known, but there are a lot of things you may not know about D-Day. Here are a few of those nuggets.

1. Why it’s called D-Day

Do you actually know what D-Day stands for? Apparently it’s the most frequently asked question at the National World War II Museum, but the answer isn’t overly simple. Many experts have varying opinions, including that the D simply stood for “day,” a code used for any important military operation. Others have said it’s just alliteration, like “H-Hour,” when a military assault begins.

While the true meaning

remains up for debate, we’ll go with what U.S. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower said about it through his executive assistant, Brig. Gen. Robert Schultz: “Be advised that any amphibious operation has a ‘departed date;’ therefore the shortened term ‘D-Day’ is used.” He said there were actually several other D-Days during the war — Normandy was just the biggest and most well-known.

2. D-Day was initially set for one day earlier

A lot of weather-related requirements were necessary to pull D-Day

off. The days needed to be long for maximum air power usage; a nearfull moon was needed to help guide ships and airborne troops; and the tides had to be strong enough to expose beach obstacles at low tide and float supply-filled landing vehicles far onto the beach during high tide. H-Hour was also crucial in that it relied on those tides to be rising at that time. There also had to be an hour of daylight just beforehand for bombardment accuracy.

Only nine days in May and June seemed to fit those requirements, so commanders eventually settled

on June 5; however, thanks to forecasts that showed a short window of good weather that day, Gen. Eisenhower decided last-minute to switch D-Day to the early hours of June 6.

3. We only stormed two of the five beaches

Stories of how U.S. troops stormed the beaches of Normandy have been legendary for years, with the names Omaha Beach and Utah beach standing out in people’s minds. But the invasion stretched out over 50 miles of land, so we couldn’t do it alone. Three other beach invasions by Allied troops happened simultaneously: Great Britain and some smaller forces stormed Gold and Sword beaches, while the Canadians took Juno Beach.

4. It was almost a failure

While the ultimate goal of liberating France and ousting the Germans did happen, a lot went wrong on D-Day — especially for the Americans, who were the first to launch the invasion.

Thousands of U.S. paratroopers died during their drop behind enemy lines at Utah Beach, having been shot out of the sky by enemy fire or weighed down and drowned in flooded marshlands. Many also missed their landing spots, as did the seaborne forces, which landed more than a mile from their intended destination, thanks to strong currents.

The Omaha offensive turned out to be the bloodiest of the day, largely in part because Army intelligence underestimated the German stronghold there. Rough

surf caused huge problems for the amphibious tanks launched at sea; only two of 29 made it to shore, while many of the infantrymen who stormed off the boats were gunned down by Germans. Gen. Omar Bradley, who led the Omaha forces, nearly considered abandoning the operation.

Somehow, though, both sectors of U.S. troops managed to advance their positions for overall success.

5. Decoding ‘Enigma’ helped us win

Decoding the great German code machine known as Enigma, then keeping that decoding device a secret, is one of the most brilliant strategies that came out of World War II.

Long story short, since radio was the standard communication of the time, the Allies and the Axis powers both needed machines to turn military plans into secret codes. The Germans had Enigma, which was thought to be unbreakable — until it wasn’t. Early in the war, a team of Polish and British experts — led by Alan Turing, whose life and work are depicted in the Oscar-winning movie “The Imitation Game” — cracked that code through what became the foundation for the modern computer.

Instead of telling the world about it, though, leaders thought the device would be more useful if kept secret. So for years, German plans were hindered by the decrypted messages, including on D-Day. Officials said the German codes intercepted before D-Day precisely pinpointed nearly all of the German fighting units in the Normandy area. On D-Day itself, it also helped Allied commanders get word of their troops’ progress quicker than through their own communication channels.

Breaking Germany’s codes, and later those of the Japanese, proved to be a huge advantage for the Allies. While controversial for its secrecy, the decoding process has been widely credited with saving hundreds of thousands of lives and shortening the war by nearly two years.

Oh, and by the way, the U.S. military developed its own superior code machine — SIGABA — before entering the war. No one was able to break that one.

If you didn’t know any of those things before today, now you do! But either way, make sure to remember those who gave their lives that day to help ensure a better future for all of us.

435 AGOW JTACs train with Allies during Defender

Europe 23 exercise Swift Response

Joint Terminal Attack Controllers from U.S. and Spanish Air Force worked together during exercise Swift Response for Defender Europe 23 in Zaragoza, Spain, May 8-12.

The U.S. JTACs participating in the exercise were 435th Airmen from Det 1 2nd Air Support Operations Squadron and the 4th Expeditionary Air Support Operations Squadron. The group coordinated with A-10s from the 442nd Fighter Wing to perform close air support.

The speed, range, and maneuverability of airpower allows CAS assets to attack targets that enable the ground scheme of maneuver. When conditions for air operations are possible, CAS can be conducted at any place and time, where friendly forces are in close proximity to enemy forces.

“Participating in this exercise showcases how JTACs can operate in a joint environment and conduct a joint forcible entry,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Justin Lacks, JTAC instructor from Det 1 2ASOS. “The work done on the ground by JTACs helps establish an overarching picture for making quick decisions.”

“We are deconflicting the location between targets and friendly forces to help the commander make battlefield decisions in a dynamic and changing environment,” said OR9 Chief Master Sgt. Oscar J. Ochoa, EADA JTAC instructor in the Spanish Air Force.

The exercise also offered valuable learning opportunities for both U.S. and Spanish forces to familiarize themselves with each other’s procedures and terminology.

“With everything going on in the world right now, you cannot understate how important it is to work with NATO Allies and

partners,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col Andrew Shebelut, Det 1 2 ASOS commander. “Working out TTPs [Tactics, Techniques and Procedures] and how we can integrate with other countries that speak a different language, makes everyone’s team better."

Additionally, Det 1 2 ASOS had two members embedded with Dutch forces in Greece who parachuted with their team.

“This links a front-line unit with U.S. Air Forces Europe, which helps build a ground picture in that country and increases interoperability,” said Shebelut.

Asian American, Pacific Islander Heritage Observance

Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Daniel Yeadon 16th Sustainment Brigade

Soldiers from the 16th Sustainment Brigade and other Soldiers from around U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz celebrated Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month on May 25.

The introduction during the ceremony talked about the history of Asian American and Pacific

Islander Heritage. “Since 1977, the month of May has been a time to recognize the achievements and contributions of Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Native Hawaiians to the American story,” said Sgt. First Class Ismael Salinas, the 16th Sustainment Brigade’s Equal Opportunity Advisor.

Each year, the president of the United States issues a presidential proclamation in recognition of Asian American and Pacific

Islander Heritage Month. Salinas read an excerpt of this year’s proclamation during his speech.

“During Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, our Nation celebrates the diversity of cultures, breadth of achievement, and remarkable contributions of these communities,” said Salinas. “Throughout our history, they have represented the bigger story of who we are as Americans and embodied

the truth that our diversity is our strength as a Nation.”

During the ceremony, a group of dancers in colorful garb performed various dances.

The guest speaker for the event was Lt. Col. John R. Abella, the commander of the 18th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion.

Abella spoke on the contributions Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have made in America’s history.

“When you talk about the journey of a lot of Asian Pacific folks, and you talk about the heritage, and when we talk about the United States of America, I think there is such a vast greatness, diversity across the entirety of what we call Asian Pacific or Native Hawaiian, I am of Filipino heritage” said Abella. “The Asian Pacific Heritage Month observance theme is advancing leaders, advancing leaders through opportunity. And that is what we do best is serve.”

Food handling, grilling safety

Food safety is easy to overlook at summer picnics. These easy tips from the Food and Drug Administration ensure a deliciously healthy BBQ:

General food safety tips

Food handling:

• Keep cold food cold with ice or frozen gel packs.

• Cold food should be stored at 40°F or below.

• Keep coolers closed. This keeps the contents cold longer.

• Do not cross-contaminate. Keep raw meat/ poultry/seafood wrapped to avoid contaminating other picnic foods.

• Clean your produce. Rinse fresh fruits and vegetables before packing. For more summertime food safety tips, visit: https://www.fda.gov/food/buy-storeserve-safe-food/handling-food-safelywhile-eating-outdoors

• Remember to thaw meat and poultry slowly in the refrigerator or under cold running water before cooking. Microwave defrosting is acceptable if the meat will be cooked immediately afterwards.

• Harmful bacteria usually grow in the "danger zone" between 40° and 140° F, so keep meat and poultry in the refrigerator until you are ready to throw it on the grill. Marinate it in the refrigerator too. If you want to use additional marinade as a sauce, be sure to boil it first to kill the bacteria or set a portion of it aside so it is not contaminated by raw meat.

• Precooking in the oven or microwave can reduce time at the grill but only precook immediately before finishing on the grill. Never partially grill meat or poultry and finish cooking later.

• When transporting food to another location, use a cooler with ice to keep it at 40°F or below. Everything should stay chilled until immediately before it will be cooked or consumed. Keep the cooler out of the direct sun and avoid opening the lid too often. It helps to keep beverages in a separate cooler.

• As always, cleanliness is essential to prevent food-borne illness. Wash hands, surfaces and utensils frequently with soap and water or antiseptic wipes.

• Never use the same plate, cutting board, or utensils for cooked food that you used for raw meats and poultry. Bacteria in the juices of raw meat and poultry can contaminate safely cooked food.

• Meat and poultry cooked on a grill browns

very quickly but may not be cooked inside. Always use a food thermometer to be sure the food has reached a safe internal temperature. In the case of whole poultry this should be 180°F in the middle. Hamburgers and pork chops should reach 160°F throughout. Beef, veal, and lamb chops can be cooked to 145°F.

• After cooking, keep meat and poultry at 140°F or warmer until eaten. If fully cooked meats like hot dogs need to be reheated, grill them to 165°F.

• Refrigerate any hot or cold leftovers promptly in shallow containers. Discard any food that is left out for more than two hours after cooking, or one hour if temperature is above 90°F.

Grilling:

Firing up the grill may be the largest safety hazard of the summer season. Use caution when grilling with open flame and careful when using charcoal lighter fluid. Nearly 5,000 people are injured annually while grilling. Outdoor bar becuing is a summer tradition and a national pastime. But it also presents two significant dan gers — fires and food poisoning. warm weather causes food to spoil more quickly.

Before using a Grill:

• Check the connection between the propane tank and the fuel line.

• Make sure the venturi tubes — where the air and gas mix — are not blocked.

• Do not overfill the propane tank.

• Do not wear loose clothing while cooking at a barbecue.

• Be careful when using lighter fluid. NEVER use gasoline to light the grill.

• Do not add fluid to an already lit fire because the flame can flashback up into the container and explode.

• Keep all matches and lighters away from children.

• Teach your children to report any loose matches or lighters to an adult immediately. Supervise children around outdoor grills.

• Dispose of hot coals properly — douse them with plenty of water and stir them to ensure that the fire is out. Never place them in plastic, paper or wooden containers.

• Never grill/barbecue in enclosed areas — carbon monoxide could be produced.

• Make sure everyone knows to Stop, Drop Roll in case a piece of clothing does catch fire.

• Call 911 or your local emergency number if a burn warrants serious medical attention.

ABC IN KMC: Japanese flair

86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

If you have been in the KMC for a while, you’re probably aware of the Garden Show or have driven by it with a dinosaur peeking over the road. But, you might not be so familiar with the Japanese Garden which is secretly tucked away behind a high sandstone wall just next to the County Administration Building.

During a visit you might have the sensation of walking through a painting, a well-chosen philosophy of Japanese gardens. These types of gardens are living works of art, composed and designed upon the principles of landscape paintings. And, the prime effect: your body and soul can intensely experience its overall sensitivity.

The garden was opened in 2000 after two years of construction and foundation of the association “Friends of the Japanese Garden Kaiserslautern” in 1995. In 1998 Japanese architect Kunihiko Akamatsu began with the design and after two years the

CROSSWORD

first of five sections was opened to the public, alongside the opening of the State Garden Show nearby. In 2004 the stone and moss gardens and the Zen garden were introduced and the Tea House opened its doors with a tea ceremony. The first wedding took place in the Tea House in 2010.

Further features, such as a kiosk named Bunkyo-an with Japanese specialties were soon to follow. The pond was redesigned

with an island and an abundance of colorful koi fish. The red wooden bridge is an absolute highlight with a grand view over the pond area and painted with a secret Japanese recipe for its bright color, and the waterfall running directly beneath it. Zigzag-stepping stones let you almost walk over water with curious koi fish peeking at you in the pond.

The garden offers a number of special events throughout the

year, such as Hanami, which is a cherry blossom event with drum groups and Kodomo no Hi, a highlight for children. In July it celebrates Tanabata based on a legend about a tragic love affair. The Moon Festival Tsukimi takes place during the full moon in either late September or early October, depending on the year, with a special flair of harmony and content in a colorful Indian summer setting.

In addition, there are regular tea ceremonies, yoga and meditation events, readings, martial arts days and even a modern Cosplay Day has taken place. With or without a special event, the garden is a fabulous place to relax, dream and wind down with a peaceful break from a busy work schedule in surprising solitude amidst a bustling city.

Since 1988 Kaiserslautern has been the sister-city of Bunkyoku, which is one of Tokyo’s 23 districts with 200,000 inhabitants and 19 universities. Another large Japanese Garden is located in Karlsruhe and the largest Japanese community outside of the country can be found in the city of Düsseldorf with 20,000 members, which celebrates Japan Day each May. The Japanese Garden is also venue during Kaiserslautern’s “Long Night of Culture” on June 17.

DAY TRIP from Page 1

toboggan. From swimming pools to steel factories, there are so many places to visit. Here’s some ideas for 7 great day trips that you can go on with or without the kids.

1. Potzberg Wild Animal Park

Every day from spring to fall there is a Birds of Prey Show at the Potzberg Wild Animal Park. Even visitors who don’t speak German get a thrill when the hawks swoop past. The spacious zoo has several animals and is a wonderful way to catch a glimpse of the wild boar that dominates the local forests. Admission costs €10.50 per adult, €7 per child ages 4-16, and €5 per child ages 2-4.

For more info, visit http://www.wildpark.potzberg.de/

2. Voelklingen Steel Factory

The Voelklingen Steel Factory closed its doors in 1986 when its equipment and manufacturing processes became obsolete. It is the only preserved plant of its kind and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors are permitted to walk all around the plant for a fascinating self-guided tour. Blast furnaces that look like large canisters dominate the skyline. Cable cars run all over the

plant like a chair lift runs up a mountain. Walking around, smelling the dust, noticing the weather feeling the immensity of the factory sparks the imagination into seeing what it would have been like to work there. A tour of the plant takes around 3 hours and is well worth the short drive to the Saarbruecken area.

For more info, visit https://voelklingerhuette.org/

If you haven’t seen storks in the Ramstein area, you are sure to see them at Luisenpark. This unique and large park in Mannheim contains playgrounds, restaurants, and animals. Pink pelicans and flamingos play in the water. A butterfly may land on you in the butterfly house. Hidden behind the Chinese Garden are two Terracotta Soldiers from an ancient Chinese burial site.

From relaxing in the shade, climbing in the playground and viewing snakes in the reptile house this park offers something for everyone. Admission costs €7.50 per adult and €5.50 for children.

For more info, visit https://www.luisenpark.de/

This Celtic living history museum lets

visitors experience life in Germany 2,000 years ago. Children may get the opportunity to cut and sew leather to construct their own coin purse, or pound copper to make a medallion. See how grain was ground and check out the construction of Celtic structures. Plan ahead. This small museum is only open on the weekends. Admission costs €4 per adult and €2 per child.

For more info, visit http://www.keltendorf-steinbach.de/

About 500 years ago, several years after the Celts, and several before modern times, the Freilichtmuseum gives visitors a more recent look into Germany’s past. It turns out that life wasn’t too much different from the American Pioneers. There wasn’t water or electricity inside the houses, cooking was done over open fires, and houses were swept with hand-made brooms.

A walking trip through all the buildings can easily last four hours as there are many open buildings. Rest at the restaurant or pack a picnic. Visit during a special event to see live demonstrations of what life was like. Admission costs €7 per adult. Children get in for free.

For more info, visit https://www.freilichtmuseum-rlp.de/

The natural water filtration system gives this swimming pool its name. Hidden behind a building on the edge of Landstuhl its surprising to see a large grassy area, water slide and landscaped swimming pools. Little ones can toddle among the pebbles in the ankle deep water, while big kids enjoy the low platform diving board and inner tubes.

If all the play builds up the appetite, brats can be purchased or visitors can enjoy a picnic. A day can easily slip away as everyone enjoys the afternoon swimming, sunning and relaxing. Admission costs €3.50 per adult and €2 per child.

For more info, visit https://www.neblandstuhl.de/

7. Alpine Summer Slide

Although the thought of sliding down a hill in a metal cart on a track may seem frightening, it’s actually quite fun. The cars are towed up and then released at the top for a curvy, fun-filled ride down the hill. Each car has breaks which are easy to use, and parents can ride with their small children. In the winter there is a single poma lift to bring skiers up the hill. It’s not too often we get the opportunity to spend an afternoon like this. One ride costs €3.
